I think Greg W. said if you rip off the front cover of the original incorrect copy and mail it to SLG, they will ship you a copy of the reprinted correct version. It sucks you'll have to pay shipping, but I'm sure it shouldn't cost too much to ship back a comic.

Aww... I just called the comic book store closest to me because I wanted to order the corrected issue of #6, and she said I couldn't order it right now, that she could only order #3 or #4. =/ I was a little confused... I don't see why she couldn't but that's what she told me... Darn it, now I can't pick it up when I will be in town next Friday. I think I am going to email SLG and ask them why I can't have them order it for me...

Thank you. I've been looking for customer reviews on the web and can't find any. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The reviews I did find looked to be done by professionals and did say it had issues. Maybe I'll go with the el-cheapo Kodak EasyShare camera that I found because I only need it for eBay pictures, nothing too fancy.

Should I buy this camera: http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=11200&pq-locale=da_DK why or why not? Thanks.

Amazon is selling a few region free DVD players. However, I noticed shipping may be a problem since some are only allowed to ship within the US.

Current Mood : (>T.T)> I'm sick...

If you play DVDs on your computer, it's very easy to play DVDs from another region -- just change the setting on the Control Panel of your computer. If you want to keep changing settings back and forth, you can buy a program called DVD Region Free.

As for DVD players, you just need to find out on the internet how to unlock the region settings on your model DVD player. Type the make and "region unlock" or something like that into Google and do some research. There's information out there for a lot of different models. It may affect your warranty, of course.

I didn't say ALL. I said most. I couldn't think of any names myself.

But there are big chunks of the US, especially in Pennsylvania and parts of the Southeast, whose original inhabitants are completely unknown.

Welcome to Rabiata!

Somebody here was talking about ways to reprogram a DVD player to be non-region-specific or to reprogram one to play for a different region. So there are solutions, hopefully the person who knows how to do this will stop by.

Wow, where are all these new people coming from? This is great. Welcome all newcomers.

My best advice for you for those who don't live in the USA:
You can order the comics directly from http://www.slgcomic.com/

I would direct you to www.amazon.com (for the comics) and DVDs, but please take not that the DVDs are most likely region encoded for the USA, and if you don't have a DVD player that plays Region 1 DVDs, then it would be a waste of money to buy them. And no, there are currently no plans by Disney to make the DVDs for other regions.

As far as Disney is concerned, Gargoyles died in 1996, but they still get make money off of it with re-runs and the check from SLG for using their property.

*notes Harvester's David Barry quote *

Though it's a humor piece rather than a quote from serious history, I might as well add that the Puritans didn't burn witches at the stake; they hanged them. Burning them was only done in Europe. (Of course, from the point of view of the accused witch, it probably didn't make that much difference.)

We can thank the Puritans for giving American society most of the hangups that still exist to this day about sex and religion.

Oberon and Titania in the bedroom helping Goliath and Elisa with "the business" is certainly an interesting image to ponder.

Nishaty > Welcome to the CR. I'm not sure what you mean by staff, you mean staff of the website? We're all fans here, not Disney employees.

I think you're asking about Goliath and Elisa having children? Well, the short answer is that they can't have biological children because they are not the same species. There may exist magic that could get around that, and Dr. Sevarius could probably use science to get around it (but who would trust Sevarius??) but short of that, they can't. However, they can certainly adopt children (or rather, Elisa can legally adopt children and Goliath can help raise them).

Just for the fun of it, a few little-known facts about the Pilgrims and their adventures:

1. The Plymouth colony wasn't named after Plymouth in England. The name "Plymouth" was bestowed upon that part of Massachusetts a few years earlier, when Captain John Smith (of Jamestown fame), after exploring and mapping that part of the eastern coast, asked the young prince Charles (the future Charles I) for ideas on what to name the local features, and "Plymouth" was one of Charles' suggestions. (Indeed, the Mayflower set sail from Southampton rather than from Plymouth, though it stopped at Plymouth along the way.)

2. The Pilgrims didn't land on Plymouth Rock. That story was invented in the 18th century as part of a local "save the rock" campaign.

3. The Pilgrims dressed in much brighter colors than they're shown in Thanksgiving decorations; they didn't confine themselves to drab brown and black clothing. (And they didn't have buckles on their hats and shoes; those hadn't been invented yet in 1620.)

4. The "first Thanksgiving" was actually a harvest festival rather than a day of giving thanks (the latter occasions were too solemn for feasting). And it was probably held in October rather than November (which means that the Canadians may have the right idea about when to celebrate it).

Dwight will be driving me deep into the Pennsylvania wilderness, where he will then leave me. To either die, or to survive. The choice is yours.

Why? Its an animated fictional character that none of us have any chance with. Hey, I think Brooklyn is hot for a gargoyle, but dwelling on it is not all that healthy. He's fake. Made up. Its fun to imagine otherwise, but having your feelings hurt because a drawing won't like a human girl is kinda pointless. If you want Brooklyn to like girls, write a fan fiction to feel better. But its all a bit much. Especially for a 25 year old woman to be that turned on by a glorified beaked, bat-winged drawn creature.

No, I don't think Brooklyn is interested in humans. He wants a gargoyle mate. Eventually, he'll have a gargoyle mate. (If you're into spoilers, there's a bunch in the archives about this.) Right now he thinks he's attracted to every female gargoyle except Demona, but he will get over it.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! One thing I miss about this holiday that I used to enjoy is the Mystery Science Theater Marathon that Comedy Central used to do years ago. I received so much education from that show. I was twelve, and my father laughed at more of the jokes than I did, and I would always be asking, "dad, why is that funny?" Aaaah, memories.

I know it sounds like that would ruin a lot of the episodes, but I still find a lot of them funny now that I'm an adult. Funnier, perhaps.

Just read Greg's comment about the upcoming Gargoyles trade, and I'm actually really excited about Wendy Pini's intro. I just started reading Elfquest in the past month or so, and I noticed it had some Gargoyles-esque qualities (although it might be more accurate to say Gargoyles has some Elfquest-esque qualities). Both series have a great sense of family and mythology and tackle the complex subject of bigotry. Has anyone else read Elfquest?

But in America, it was different. The founding fathers landed in 16 (mumbles). They set off from Plymouth and landed in Plymouth! How lucky is that? "This is Plymouth? We've just come from Plymouth! We've gone round in a circle. Lads, back on the boats." They finally got there and said, "Ah, this is where our God has brought us to! W e can practice our religion here, we can raise a family. There's nobody here! Excuse me... There's nobody here! Yes, a land empty of human existence. Who the f*** are these guys? (gestures at the headdress) What's all this, please? No, we don't want any of your food, thank you very much! Just put some clothes on!"

Meanwhile, that winter... "Excuse me, do you have any food? (gestures at the headdress) I love all this, love the idea! Yes, I'm sorry, we were a bit brusque when we first arrived, we didn't realize you owned the entire country! But you have no system of ownership? Mmm, interesting! Maybe that can come in useful later. Food! Thank you very much, very nice... Yes, there're more of us coming but we'll keep our promises."

I'm really enjoying the recent string of TDIGUHs. Nov 23, 1995 was a Thursday and also Thanksgiving. So it all makes sense. I love it. But what I really love, is that we are very close to getting an Illuminati induction date for Matt Bluestone.

If my memory serves me correctly, Matt flips on Elisa concerning the Gargoyles before sunrise of the 24th. Elisa then decides to show Matt the Gargoyles when they wake up 10 minutes before sunrise. Then that night, Goliath and Matt enter the Hotel Cabal. Then the next morning the 25th, Hacker gives Matt a pin, which I am lead to believe is his induction.

So if Matt only "stewed" on the 23rd and didn't confront Elisa until the 24th, then Matt's induction day is Nov 26th.

Patrick - [<-- The Gathering 2008]
"You will never find true happiness. What ya gonna do, cry about it?" - Weird Al Yankovic, "Your Horoscope for Today"

All gargoyles are hatched on or near the spring equinox, so I think they'd all be the same sign, though I couldn't care less what sign that is.

As for Brooklyn (and Broadway and Lexington) he was hatched in 958. So in 1996 he is 1038 years old, of course for 1000 of those years he was stuck asleep so lets say he is a 38 year old gargoyle. Some people like to convert a gargoyle's age into human years (I don't particularly like this system). If you did convert it, you'd do so by halfing his actual age. So, in 1996 Brooklyn is the equivalent of a 19 year old human. If you are talking about his age in 2007, well thats a whole other story cuz you've got 40 years of Timedancing in there, but the short version is that in 2007 (assuming Brooklyn is still alive) he is 1089 years old, the equivalent of a 89 year old gargoyle or a 45 year old human.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Gargoyles eggs all hatch around the same time, so all gargoyles would be the same astrological sign. So there's not be much of a market for horoscopes in gargoyle society.

Tom loves these people, they are his family, and after this long of life I can not see him being resentful of them for any of it.

Quincy Hemmings> Yes, this isn't a coincidence. No way it could be. Not in the Gargoyles Universe. But something strange is going on. LBJ takes over the presidency. A crisis has occured in the nation. A tragedy. And on the first day of LBJ's presidency... Quincy Hemmings becomes chief steward at the White House? Huh?

Tom might have some resentment over what the Magus did to the gargoyles, and he alsmost always buries this resentment by remembering the Magus helped the eggs escape to Avalon.
Michael Ejercito - [mejercit at hotmail dot com]

Good thoughts, Matt. This is fun. I wonder if subconsciously Tom really was looking for Goliath on his centennial sojourns. Then when he saw Goliath he blurted out what was in the back of his mind, hoping it was what Goliath wanted to hear.

Matt's comments got me thinking about the early years on Avalon, during the two-and-a-half years (Avalon time) before the eggs hatched, when it was just the three humans. Tom, a young boy, sees gargoyles as heroes, though (as far as we know) he only had a few days of contact with them. Katharine grew up with gargoyles and hated/feared them, only recently recognizing the error of her attitude. And the Magus knew and hated gargoyles, and actually "killed" the survivors of Hakon's massacre, repenting after it was too late. Did Tom harbor a little resentment, knowing that the Magus had "killed" his hero? Were Katharine and the Magus a little defensive, because Tom didn't really know the gargoyles like they did, and he was just a kid? I suppose it wouldn't make for a very exciting episode, but I'd love to hear some of the discussions that took place among those three.

Isn't this interesting? Greg, faced with an apparent continuity error, backpedals and quickly makes up an explanation for it. Then we (or at least I) spend the next few days contemplating and discussing the character involved, his choices and actions, and how his relationships are affected. I love Gargoyles.

I think you are right, Matt.

I really wonder now about Quincy. If the Illuminati had any part in JFK's assassination? I wonder if Greg has decided yet how he was assassinated and by who, in the Garg Universe. Not that he'd tell us, of course.

Cool stuff! Thanks for the TDIGUH entries, Greg, and have a good Thanksgiving.

Tom's character> I'm thinking that a lot of this may have to do with Tom's hero-worship of Goliath. He's been feeling that his whole life and teaching it to the next generation... Maybe Tom "knew" Goliath would never wake up, but Goliath is his hero and maybe a tiny part of him was always hoping that one day... Goliath was sleeping, but the Avalon did attribute a larger-than-life status to him, so in many ways, Todd brings up a good point. There was a lot of Arthur-symbolism going on. Maybe the Avalon Clan feels that the legendary Goliath will awake and return to them when they need him the most, which of course he did. So when Tom tells Goliath that he went out every 100 years to see if he had awakened I think it's likely he was just caught up in the moment of seeing his hero again. We all want our heros to know that we are on their side, we want our heros to see us as allies. We want our heros to be grateful for our help, even if we have to stretch the truth a tiny bit. So, Tom tells Goliath, his hero, what he wants to hear.

That was supposed to be "super-hero comics", not "super-hero concepts".
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I think that some of the confusion might have arisen from the clash between the characters' perspectives and the audience. To a viewer of "Awakening", it's obvious that the gargoyles are going to somehow be awakened in modern times, partly because the series is just starting, partly because of the New York scene at the very beginning of "Awakening Part One" (not to mention the "Next Time on Gargoyles" segment), and partly because of the familiar concept in super-hero concepts of a super-hero who originated in the historical past but gets transported to the modern world. But, of course, Goliath and the other characters would not be aware of such things - certainly not in 994. (I didn't realize that last part until Greg Weisman explained that Goliath's request to the Magus was a suicide request.) It's understandable that the writers might make that slip about Tom. (And there is an analogy to the notion of a super-hero from the past coming to the present that Goliath, Tom, and the other characters *would* be aware of: the concept of a mythical hero sleeping in a remote cave, to someday awaken when he's most needed. In fact, we got just such a figure in "Avalon", which might have helped that misapprehension on the writers' part all the more.)

Notice that in the "This Day in the Gargoyles Universe" entry, when Tom finds out about the castle being taken to New York, Greg Weisman repeats the phrase "lock, stock, and gargoyle" that Elisa used in "The Thrill of the Hunt".

I'd thought that there might be some significance in Quincy Hemings becoming Chief Steward during the administration of a president who'd gotten the job through his predecessor being assassinated - and remember that Teddy Roosevelt (under whose administration Hemings first entered the White House staff) also got the job through *his* predecessor being assassinated. Maybe the Illuminati really did have something to do with the Kennedy assassination, at least, in the Gargoyles Universe. (I wonder if it's also significant that the Kennedy administration was nicknamed "Camelot" and one of the Illuminati leaders is a former knight of the Round Table.)

Todd Jensen

Matt and DPH: That being the case, it makes sense that he wouldn't have come out once a century to see if Goliath had woken up. The words of the spell had basically been a metaphor for eternity. Before he found the castle gone in 1995, he probably would not have thought it possible for the spell to be broken.

Thanks, Greg Weisman, for giving us a bunch of "This day in Gargoyles' Universe History" before you take time to enjoy Thanksgiving.

It's interesting that Greg Weisman pinned down the exact date that Quincy Hemings became White House Chief Steward and that date happened to be the day after John F Kennedy was killed. Does anybody think those two events are somehow tied together? Or a more interesting question is does anybody think that Greg Weisman pinned down the exact date that Quincy Hemings started working as a White House steward?

I need to throw in my 2 cents....

I love Gargoyles, it has been a predominant feature for most of my life. I was turning 12 when it premiered and I just turned 25...

But doesn't the notion of the Guardian "saying what he thought Goliath wanted to hear" in light of what Greg revealed having forgotten lines in canon episodes seem like a touch of back peddling?

Mr. Weisman, this is, I promise no slight against you, or Gargoyles, or anything.

But you've stated that, what you come up with post the series, or at least, until it is printed in the comic book, is, canon in training.

I wouldnt expect you to remember every line from every episode. But when you made it seem like the notion that they never expected Goliath and co. to wake up was abundantly clear even though the series stated otherwise seems odd.

I dunno, just my 2 cents.

**Quote from memo
Sunrise was only six hours away. They thought about hiding the gargoyles, but realized there was no place on the island where the Weird Sisters couldn't find them. They had to get help. Tom ventured out by skiff to the real world. As he had done once every century. The skiff landed at Wyvern, and Tom was shocked to see that the castle was missing. He went to a local village, where he was told that the castle had been moved to the top of a skyscraper in a place called NEW York. Tom picks up on the word " skyscraper ". Is it possible that the castle has risen above the clouds? One villager's seen it in New York. It's definitely above some of the clouds. (You can show this village scene in flashback if you have space or time.)

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

By ill timing now I want to double-post to reply to Matt.

I believe that Greg described Tom's tenth trip to Earth, possibly in one of the episode rambles. From what I remember (and it fits with his "Thanks to Avalon for sending me to New York" comment, Tom came to Wyvern and asked some local people what happened to the castle. They told him it was bought by some American and taken to New York. One local mentions it is on top of a "skyscraper." Tom hears this word and in wonder asks, could the castle be above the clouds now? The locals suppose it might be. So Tom returns to Avalon, informs the Clan, and sets out again hoping the Isle will send him to New York.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Remember that by the time of Ill Met, Goliath had already informed them that, in fact, it wasn't particularly safe for them on Earth. So in that episode they knew they had "nowhere else to go."

It seems that before Goliath explained this, they held out hope of someday returning to earth and being protectors again, and working alongside humans as their ancestors did.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Sorry for the double post (if no one posts again before I submit this).

A couple cool things reveal themselves now. First off, I think it's pretty neat that Tom departs Avalon just to scope out the world's gargoyle sentiment and check if it's safe for the Clan and Avalon sends him back to Wyvern. He probably didn't expect or intend to go there and I bet his reaction was pretty surprised to see the Castle gone (not to mention a chunk of the cliff).

So, now he knows the Castle (and the gargoyles on it) are gone. But he doesn't know where, or even if they are awake somewhere else. For all he knows they could've been removed and awakened 99 years earlier and pretty much died of old age by 1995! So he goes back to Avalon and tells everybody whats up. A month later the Archmage attacks and Tom leaves again to get help. He finds Goliath in New York and brings him back and Katharine proclaims, "Tom, you found him!" This exclamation by the Princess makes a lot more sense after we know what happened TDIGUH. Before today we didn't know that they thought Goliath was missing, but from their POV, he was.

Seeing as how the Avalon Clan feels they "have no place else to go" when Oberon demands they leave the island, I'm guessing Tom decided the global environment wasn't too peachy for gargoyles. Goliath's statement that he couldn't come live on Avalon because he felt "...gargoyles and humans must learn to live together again or it will never be safe for us in the outside world" carried some weight a well.

Very interesting.

Thanks for the clarification Greg W and the exact quote Greg B.

Matt wrote: "Secondly, Tom made it clear in the the series that he returned to the outside world every hundred years to see if Goliath and the Wyvern Clan had awakened."

I don't think Tom makes THAT specific point clear at all. He journied out every 100 years, and the main purpose of these journies was to see if the world was safe for his clan. No one EVER expected Goliath et al to awaken. I'm surprised this is regarded as new information. Perhaps it was so clear in my head, that I took it for granted that everyone knew.

"Ask me who invented sarcasm?" "Okay, who invented sarcasm?" "I did." -- Approximate quote from a comic strip called, I think, Downstown.

Tony> First of all, the calculations have been done and the gargoyles of the Avalon Clan, as of 1996, were not yet old enough and in synch with the Earth's bio-rythyms to mate. However, the other two beasts of the Clan (besides Boudicca) are mates and since beasts can mate one cycle earlier than gargoyles there should be a beast egg on Avalon when Goliath and Co arrive.
Secondly, Tom made it clear in the the series that he returned to the outside world every hundred years to see if Goliath and the Wyvern Clan had awakened. One of these journies undoubtedly explains where he got his sword and armor. Anyway, since they arrived on Avalon in 995, his tenth journey back to the real world would've been in 1995. I think that is the journey that we are seeing in TDIGUH. Him going out into the world today isn't a surprise for me. What is a surprise for me is that he is seeing if it was safe for the whole Clan to emerge.

Wingless/Tony> What we've seen in the show doesn't support your ideas. The Avalon Clan, not to mention Tom and Katharine, never seemed to have any interest at all in leaving Avalon for any reason. Oberon demanded they leave and they still refused. That is what makes TDIGUH so baffling.

Matt> If my calculations are correct - Katherine, Tom and the Magus aged 42 years while on Avalon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming there are Avalon Clan eggs that exist as well.

With the years ticking by, maybe Tom wanted to venture into the real world to see if things had gotten better between Gargoyles and humans over the past 1000 years (and if the spell over Goliath and his clan, he could have the added bonus of introducing them to his clan's children). Maybe he wanted the Avalon Clans eggs to have a life outside of Avalon if it was safe to do so.

Interesting revelation in TDIGUH:

"1995
The Guardian departs Avalon to see if it is safe for the Avalon Clan to leave the island. Avalon sends him to Wyvern Hill, where he sees that Castle Wyvern is now gone."

Now, part of this makes sense to me. When Tom eventually returns to Avalon with Goliath, Elisa and Bronx a month later, the Princess says something to Tom about, "You found him." Clearly Tom would've had to know Goliath was awake or at least had been moved for the Princess to wonder where he was. The part that strikes me as odd here is that Tom is leaving Avalon to see if it is safe for the Avalon Clan to leave the island. The Archmage hasn't attacked the island yet and Oberon hasn't returned yet. Why would the Avalon Clan want or need to leave the island? It seems to me that they had a pretty good life there and it was obvious in "Ill met..." that they felt Avalon was their home and they had no where else to go... This is strange to me.

It seems safe to assume that the story in issues #7 to #9 will be about the Stone of Destiny, and that the assignment that the Illuminati gave Xanatos at the White House has something to do with the Stone. While we'll probably get some answers when the next issue of "Gargoyles" comes out, the big question is: what do the Illuminati want with the Stone?

The Stone of Destiny's been around longer than the Illuminati have, so I doubt that this is a simple "steal the Stone" scheme; they could have done that at any time in the past thousand years or so. But the Stone is about to be returned to Scotland in the comic (was returned, in real life, just a couple of weeks after Halloween in 1996); presumably this return is what has brought about the Illuminati's interest. Maybe they don't want it to go back to Scotland, or maybe they see its transportation there as an opportunity for them to achieve something. Whatever it's about, I'm looking forward to reading those upcoming issues and discovering the answer.

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Happy Birthday Justin!

When will we know for sure Bad Guys is coming out this week?

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Marina Sirtis has lived in the U.S. for long enough that if you ever hear her speaking with a heavy British accent, she's probably doing it on purpose. Her natural speaking voice is not heavily accented, but it isn't quite the same as the way she played Troi or Demona, either.

Maybe it's just me hoping "Gargoyles" fandom could be more civil than other, but I do not get the "LULZ" from seeing things related to our fandom taken to sites like "Encyclopedia Dramatica."

(9 or 10) Ninth or Tenth depending on your timing!

It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?- George Lucas on Spider-Man 3

Wow. The character Marina is doing there actually sounds a lot like Demona. I always wondered, though. Why does she always speak in a North American accent instead of using her own? (Though in that interview she doesn't have one either) Gargoyles, Trek, and now this. o.O Oh well, the acting looks good in that game anyway.

Oh that would be really great if Bad Guys came out this Wednesday... Since I have to go to Ashland, OR on Nov. 30, and that's the closest comic book shop near me, and it's 20 miles away... So I could pick it up while I am in town.

Anyways, Mochi, if you're still interested in getting a copy of #6 with the productions errors, let me know. I have sent you an email.

Hello everyone

I dont know if anyone would be interested in this (does anyone read my posts, hm..) Anyway, there is this new video game coming out Tuesday called Mass Effect. The reason I'm talking about this is because it features two of our favorite voice actors: Keith David and Marina Sirtis and other famous actors like Seth Green. Also, ironically enough, the main story is about a human soldier and his comrades trying to stop a rogue Turion (creatures that naturally hate humans but under law fight along humans) from destroying humanity. Ill post a video of Keith and Marina being interviewed about their part in the game

Video games are my cocaine!

4th, 'cause, why not ?

Maybe gonna go check if my comic shop guy got the #6 reprint in last week (I seriously doubt it). Need to head over there anyway to get a couple TPBs of Brian Michael Bendis' work for a friend's birthday (she requested his Spider-Woman trade, but I think I wanna get her the first volume of POWERS as well...which is sorta self-serving, since I wanna read that too, but it works 'cause she loves just about anything Brian Michael Bendis).

Also looking forward to seeing if we're in for some Bad Guys this week. Two of my favorite minor villains/grey-area-characters from the Gargoyles universe, Fang and Dingo/Matrix, are in there, so I'm looking forward to this possibly even a little more than I am to #7 of the main book.
