I'll be the number two guy here in Scranton in six weeks. How? Name repetition, personality mirroring and never breaking off a handshake. I'm always thinking one step ahead. Like a... carpenter... that makes stairs.

Antiyounder, you'll have to do better than that!

How many copies of Season Two, Volume One of Trophies on DVD have to be sold to get Season Two, Volume Two released to complete the entire series? Me, I think we should just ignore Jonny for now. If he comes out to Chicago, I'll be able to get him drunk and then learn his true intentions towards the fandom. But for now, I'm leaning heavily towards troll. But I haven't abandoned replicant. And since we have no psychological test for that yet, the only way to tell is to open the bastard up. I sold some Voltron toys at a garage sale when I was 16 and my family needed to scrounge up some cash to move. I cry when I see what the same stuff sells for on eBay these days. And it's not just toys that become nostalgia items. I should have kept my Atari 800 and my original Sega console system, too. That's why I still have Super Nintendo and an old Sanyo betamax VCR in storage.

Asatira

Alexandra> The fandom for Gargoyles may indeed be more colourful then those of Thundercats or He-Man but it is by no stretch of the imagination more vast. the thing about He-Man or Thundercats is that they were both hugely popular in their time. I grew up in the eighties when practically every kid had a lion-o or Skeletor action figure. Gargoyles by contrast while awesome beyond words was always more of a cult franchise with a much smaller though highly dedicated fan base. In short He-Man and Thundercats are more like the Power Rangers or Pokemon of their day. Gargoyles is more like a ninties Visionaries, a very well written cartoon which still failed to garner mass appeal with a small though loyal fanbase. Plus pop culture is going through something of an eighties nostalgia fest at the moment, since all the folks who grew up watching eighties cartoons now have big disposable incomes, kids of their own or in some cases are even working in the entertainment industry themselves. this is probably why Transformers keeps getting a new cartoon or comic book every couple of years. That said it's probably only a matter of time before the nineties nostalgia starts kicking in which should be good for Gargoyles, either that or we end up getting a "newer", "edgier" version of Darkwing Duck.

So about season 2 part 2..... I know I am singing with the chorus here but I don't get it. they have thundercats all episodes as well as heman but not gargoyles???? that to me dosent make sense since the following for gargoyles is much more vast and colorful. I went to youtube and I found the episodes they dont have out on dvd yet if that helps anyone. but I would still like the entire collections. I have bought for the past 2 years at least 12 copies of each dvd for presents. I guess what I am really trying to say is when can I expect disney to grow up and give us what we want, and dose anyone see this happenning in 2008? thanks for your time and have a great day!

ASK GREG SEARCHING
--

dph brought this up in an e-mail and mentioned others had said something about this so I thought it best that I address it here.

You will find searching for "Tom" brings up no results. This is because the full-text search automatically discards any search term that is 3 or less characters in length. This isn't something I can change, this is simply how MySQL's full-text search engine works.

The generic search, however, WILL return the expected results. This is why both the full-text and generic search options are available via the two radio buttons below the input search field.

So why offer full-text searching at all then? Two reasons. One it performs a bit faster than the generic search. Two is that search results are ordered by a score that MySQL's full-text search engine creates based upon how often the search terms appear. The generic search doesn't do anything like that, it just sorts results based on the date they appear.

All of this is explained in the accompanying text on the Ask Greg search page. I'm sure most people ignore the text (TLDR sort of thing), but if you read on you'll find the search feature actually offers a few nice tools to help narrow down and get the exact item(s) you're searching for.

Gorebash

Well, it took me one Big Blue Bus and the Green Metro Line (and a few blocks of walking), but I managed to get a hold of Bad Guys #1 - Strangers!

***DEFINITE SPOILERS***

LOVED the issue. I was surprised about the Cover -- the BAD GUYS font was not longer in its original "Gargoyle" font. Oh well, still though the Cover works -- I'm kinda hoping that if all six covers are Wanted Posters (with maybe the last one being a group shot?), maybe they form a bigger collage of sorts?? Guess we'll see.

It took me three reads, but I finally noticed that Matrix's boom box is actually fabricated from the Matrix himself -- totally didn't notice it morph away.

"The Will to Love" -- This is going to make many W.I.T.C.H. fans happy, since the full song never aired. Pity we don't have a full recording of it, but it's still nice to hear what we do have when I read the issue.

The TT -- My honest first thought was, "It's a young Fearless Ferret!" (if you get that, then kudos for watching Kim Possible :P) And about him being in the Pack one day -- yeah, he's going to need a MAJOR upgrade. But hey, I think he'd fit in quite well with -- what did Dingo call them?? Oh, yeah -- that "Frankenstein" lot.

Dingo & Matrix -- Very cool with the whole spinal thing. Dingo seems pretty sensitve about it, but then again, I really don't know what it's like to have something inserted into my spine . . . .

I too loved how Matrix just moved "the necessities." Oh, the AI, they never do more than what they have to . . . .

Shaman -- Nice to see him again. Though I wonder if we ever will again, now that Dingo's being shangaied from Australia. (Yeah, Todd that's gotta be Uluru / Ayer's Rock.)

Hunter -- She's awesome, no doubt about it. Loved how she shot Dingo's gun right out of his hand.

The end -- I've never seen the Leica Reel (haven't been to a Gathering yet), but I love the ominous ending for the cliffhanger we got in the beginning of the story (another reason to love Greg's writing -- the cliffhangers aren't necessarily at the end of the issue!)

Overall, a great set up, and I can't wait to see what happens in Japan (to recruit Yama) and eventually New York (to get Fang). If/When we get to Hunter's story of orgin, you think we'll meet her in the USA, Scotland, or soemwhere else??

On the subject of the Pack. I think that the Ask Greg post quoted below mentions culpaeos, wild dogs, and dholes. I think names like Wild Dog and Bush Dog and Maned Wolf would sound funny, but culpaeo and dhole and tanuki are examples of the more obscure canids that could work. There's also Fennec and Warrah, and other possible names include non-English words such as Zorro, Garou, Kitsune, etc.

I cant wait to read bad guys but i have to wait until it comes on Amazon I'm ordering Bad Guys, 6, and 7 for my brother for christmas but Bad guys isn't there yet. so my questions are
1. does any one know how long it takes Amazon to get the comics?
2. # 7 is coming out dec 5th right or has this changed?
3. does any one know why amazon isn't sell #6 any more, last week they were selling it new and this week you can only buy it from the other sellers, is this because of the reprint?
4. Does any one know when and if # 6 will be back on Amazon?
Hope everyones enjoying being a gargoyles fan cause it could only get better if it was on TV!!!

I'm gonna be out-of-the-loop for a bit, because my local comic store didn't get their order of Bad Guys on time (or something), so I think I'll have to wait until next week. Funny story: I went downtown to go to a different store in hopes of getting it there, only to find out that the store no longer exists (or perhaps has moved). I came back to my car and found I had a parking ticket for not feeding the parking meter. I thought they didn't have to be fed on Saturdays, but I guess I was thinking of Sundays. So a four dollar comicbook cost me eight dollars, and I didn't even get the comic. Well, that's fandom for you.

I think it's a totally moot point. The whole reasoning behind the Pack is that they are all WILD animals. Hunters with a "pack" mentality. Having a member named after a domesticated animal wouldn't fit in at all. Names like Chihuahua may be funny, but they are not gonna happen. Don't worry about the pit bulls and the rotweillers and all that. They are not gonna be the namesake of the newest Pack member. In any case, since when does Gargoyles ever go along with stereotypes?
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

As someone who works on fighting BSL (Breed Specific Legislation AKA Dog Breed Bans), I truly hope the new Ultra-Pack member is not a specific breed of dog. Pit Bulls, Rottis, Dobies, etc get enough bad press by bad owners and cheezy B-horror movies. I've worked with all these breeds. Many of them abused so badly they were close to death and nursing them back to health I learned one thing real quick. The ones getting mauled the most are the dogs themselves by disgusting human beings. The last thing they need is to have a villain named after them and acting like a criminal. The perception is bad enough by the scare tactic news media, that something for me as beloved as Gargoyles, it would totally taint my love for it if any portion of the show jumped into the stereotype of making these breeds into a villain just to sell more comics. And believe me plenty of morons who support BSL use fictionalizations of the breeds to feed their need to exterminate them.

****BAD GUYS SPOILERS****
One of the things that I find amusing about the Tazmanian Tiger is that even though he's a cheesy villain, he bases his schtick on something obscure (in this case, an animal that in the real world has likely been extinct for decades).

I was very impressed with the way it flowed, and also with the look we got at the relationship between Dingo and Matrix. Like most machines, Matrix seems to take things very literally. That should make for an interesting dynamic. I can picture what his first conversation with Fang might be like.

And I remember someone in here mentioning not too long ago that even though Dingo might be a hero in Australia, in the States he still has a record. I like that this was brought up.

Also liked the dynamic between him and Hunter. Already, we're getting a sense of where their interactions on the first few pages developed from. I can't wait to see how this progresses.

I forgot to mention it this morning, but today is St. Andrew's day. Since St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, this makes it relevant to "Gargoyles", in light of how many of its members (Goliath and his clan, Demona, the Avalon clan, Macbeth, Princess Katharine, Tom, the Magus, the Archmage, Mary, Finella, Constantine, the Hunters from Gillecomgain all the way down to the Canmores, the Captain of the Guard, and even the Loch Ness Monsters) are Scottish.

* SEMI-SPOILERS *

I did some reading about thylacines at the library today, and discovered that one reason why they became extinct was because of competition from dingos. That certainly fits Dingo's defeat of the Tazmanian Tiger - though with the contrast that Dingo takes care not to harm Benjamin and Natasha.

Patrick> Well, there are still other wild dogs that weren't mentioned (Carolina dog, Small-eared dog, Raccoon dog, Bush dog), but only Carolina and Bush would make acceptable names. Most of the rest do fall under the wolf or fox umbrellas, though ones like the Kit fox or Corsac fox would also be okay since they can be called something other than "fox" and have it sound all right.

Still, I think Taz would make an interesting addition to the Pack, and the most likely.

Dracolich5 writes...
Here again with a pretty specific question. Ok, we know that there was going to be an Ultra-Pack, and that this Pack would have one new member. I, having an interest in recognizing animals, have tried to narrow down the options as to the Pack name for this new member. Now, I am trying not to single out a name, since that would be a story idea, so I'll see if this goes through:

Well, pretty much all standard wild Canids and one related type have been used; Wolf, Fox, Jackal, Hyena(which is actually more closely related to cats!), Dingo, and Coyote. So, what do we have left? A petty easy one is Wild Dog (shortening from African Wild Dog.) This name seems to fit and is simple enough not to confuse the general public. Considering this series is designed for a general audience, I don't think anyone would know what a Dhole is. Most other uniquely named canids are foxes, and the Culpeo is more closely related to Domestic Dogs (I think.) Thus, although I would like to see Dhole (although viewers might mistake that name for Dingo), and if it is not a Wild Dog, the only other choice I see is in non-canids. In otherwords, the Thylacine (Tasmanian Wolf.) I honestly can't see any other addition, unless you consider that the Maned Wolf is not a true wolf. So, have I narrowed it down? Are any of the names I've listed the name? Do you wish to keep a secret? Am I missing any? Am I just being a pain?

Greg responds...

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, 'City of Stone'

Tony> I'd give it an 8 or 9 out of 10.

***SPOILERS***

The thought that Tazmanian Tiger will be the next Pack member is a very good one. All these years we were trying to think of other dog-like carnivores and we had so much trouble. Guess we should've included (presumably) extinct animals into our thinking. Of course, it's not 100% or anything, maybe it will still be someone else, but he just fits the mold too perfectly. A nice replacement for Dingo. I still hold out hope for the day when we get a Redemption Squad vs. Ultra-Pack story.
Also, when Matrix is telling Dingo about inserting into his spine, does anyone else see the tiny possible insertion point on Dingo's lower back? Or am I just seeing things?
Matrix's morphing cracks me up. When Hunter shows up and Dingo tries to "link up" with Matrix, Matrix "backs up", not by stepping away, but just by moving the top half of his body away. It looks so cool. It's a lot of fun.
I wonder if Matrix will be the only Squad member who joined up willingly. Funny since it doesn't seem like Hunter was really trying to recruit him. Now that Dingo is uneasy about linking up, and now that they are both part of a larger team, I wonder if we'll still be seeing them as a duo so much...

I'll be the number two guy here in Scranton in six weeks. How? Name repetition, personality mirroring and never breaking off a handshake. I'm always thinking one step ahead. Like a... carpenter... that makes stairs.

I was having such a bad day, being uber sick & on my way to work, right up until my stop at the comic book shop to pick up my weeklys when I get handed the Bad Guys along with my regulars. 1) I actually didn't realise it was coming out today. 2) This was at the comic store that never gets Gargoyles in let alone knows to put it on my pull list(I go to two stores). Needless to say I was pleasantly surprized.

Anyways...
**Bad Guy spoilers**
Starting on the art I liked it, though there wasn't quite the love I had for her issue of Gargoyles. The first few pages felt off to the point where scans_daily has dubbed it as 'webcomic-quality' art, though starting on the page in Australia it seemed to improve to the point which I enjoyed it quite a bit.

For the cover art, as mentioned, it could have been a bit more interesting. Nothing about it really grabs your attention or makes it appealing as a first issue cover. A group picture, or even just something with Dingo and Matrix would have worked alot more. Though I do like the look of the title itself.

As for the story there was nothing but complete love. Everything from the leica reel opening to the bit with the Tazmanian Tiger to Hunter's enlistment of Dingo, and by default Matrix, was fantastic. Speaking of the Tazmanian Tiger though I can not even begin to say how much I enjoyed that part. Why? Well for one ever since I did some report on the cloning process and thylacines way back in middle school I've had this inate love of the pressumably extinct animal(hey, some people still claim to see them from time to time). Secondly, it was just a classic super villain/super hero comic book moment. I especially loved the dialoge of the people on the street in that part as well 'It's a giant kooka-burra!' 'Mama, do all dingoes fly?' Cute.

Moving along was alittle weirded out by the idea of Matrix connecting with Dingo viva penetrating his spine. Rather creepy. Also with Matrix when first reading his dialoge I got this weird dejavu type feeling about him. After thinking about it a bit I realised that he reminds me of the Android from the JLU cartoon. Anyone else familar with that series see this or is it just me? Not to say it made the character less enjoyable I rather like how gun-ho he is with the 'Law & Order' idea to the point of essentially pushing Dingo into joining the team.

Can't wait for the next one and though it's obvious who's getting picked up next the choice of words, i.e. tengu, instantly filled my head with pitures of little kimono-wearing katana-weilding birdmen. ;p

My Review For Bad Guys #1, "Strangers"...

- Alright, first lets talk about the cover. I like the improvements we saw over the preview of this cover from a couple months ago. The title is good, with a mention of Gargoyles to ensure this is the same universe, but the "Bad Guys" is larger and the lettering is unique, I'm glad. I also like the art itself. Matrix is well drawn and I can only imagine the difficulties of drawing this silvery solid shiny dude and making it look good in 2D, but both in the cover and in the book he looks great. Now as for the concept of the cover itself... well, the idea of the wanted poster is cool, but I'm not sure it was a great choice for the first book especially. You've got a Gargoyles-related media that is going to be in black & white for the first time, but you at least get colored covers and... you go for almost an entirely brown and gray cover? I'm generally a fan of more dynamic covers anyway, but this is particularly frustrating. Having Matrix as the first cover featured Squad member wouldn't have been my first choice either. He's a very cool character, but he is kinda bland to just look at him in mug shots. And the fact that the shots are black in white isn't great either. For all new readers know, Matrix is bright pink. Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on the cover, the art is good, and although not particularly dynamic it does grab your attention, I suppose. And it isn't entirely colorless, as my friend Ryan pointed out. Thank goodness for those pushpins.

- Moving on to the art in the book itself, well it is really, really great. I know a lot of people wished that Karine was doing the art on the main Gargoyles book, but honestly, I think Bad Guys is better for her. I think her skills are outstanding, but I tend to think she draws animals and humans better than gargoyles. I didn't love how Yama looked, but he was only in three frames, so I'll keep an open mind for Issue #2. On the other hand, the humans look great. Matrix, as I said, is extremely well done, and Fang looks way better than he did at any time in the series. The Thylacines look anatomically perfect, right down to their impressively expansive jaws. The biologist in me was thrilled to see them at all, and even more thrilled to see them so perfectly depicted. And kudos to Greg for thinking to include them. I'm glad everyone is doing their research.

- So we start out in medias res. It appears to be the adaption of a scene from the famous Bad Guys Leica Reel. I like how the Squad has their own uniforms, and I'm particularly fond of Fang's little shorts (like I said, I love how he was drawn). Matrix's morphing throughout the issue is very well shown, as are the fight scenes. It takes a lot of skill to show such dynamic movements in a comic book, and I had no trouble following the action. The little scene between Dingo and Hunter at the beginning is a lot of fun, though I think it plays better in the leica reel. As for the explosive cliffhanger, I think many Gathering attendees know how that one is gonna play out, still really fun though.

- Back two months and down under we get our first new villain. Tazmanian Tiger comes off as a very fun traditional comic book bad guy here, which is great cuz that is just what Dingo and Matrix need to show us what they've been up to since "Walkabout". One thing confuses me though. T. Tiger says, "Congratulations. You're the first to behold (me)." Implying this villain is making his first appearance, but he also seems to know exactly who Dingo is when Dingo and Matrix show up, even with the concealing armor. Has Taz seen this pair before? Doesn't seem like it, and yet it's implied. Guess we'll see what happens. I have no doubt we'll see Tazmanian Tiger again, and I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking up some possible storylines in his future. Anyway, I like him. Plus, I get a vibe from him... if you know what I mean.

- We get much more of the Dingo-Matrix partnership and how it works. Matrix is great. He is so driven (or obsessed) with this whole Law and Order thing. That goes right along with his character development. He is sentient, sure, and he's obviously intelligent, but he is also a very simple thinker. He can't help it, he was programmed that way. He had an objective, he has modified it slightly, but it is still his main objective. It'll be a lot of fun to watch his development. I was also pleased for the Shaman's return cameo. I like that Dingo and him have an ongoing relationship.

- We don't get to know how or why Hunter is here exactly (though the hardcore fans more or less know), and it'll be fun to go back and fill in that blank eventually. I think a great point made in this story is that all actions have consequences. Even though Dingo has become a "super"hero in Australia, he is still a wanted man back in the States. He can't pretend that part of his life never happened. So while he may be the most heroic of the Bad Guys (maybe), he still has his skeletons...

- Fantastic writing, as usual. Some of my favorite lines:

Tazmanian Tiger: "They've been extinct for sixty years so you can imagine how hungry they are!"

Dingo: "Look I've gone the super-villain route..."
Hunter: "Who hasn't?"

Oh, and I thought the last "letters" page being titled "Wanted, Posters!" was brilliant wit. Got a laugh out of me.

- Anyway, to sum it up here: A fantastic first step on what looks to be a fun series. I especially look forward to seeing the Ishimura Clan again on the Great Tengu Hunt. Always looked forward to seeing more of Sora in particular, and her interesting relationship with Yama. More of that next time. Great job everybody and thanks!

Since I can't say anything about Bad Guys yet, I'll chime in with my fangirlness of W.I.T.C.H. I really enjoyed the second season, it just flowed so much better than the first. I loved the songs from "S is for Self". I have part of the season recorded on DVD. There are a number of in-jokes for Gargoyles fans. I mean, the first few episodes have Thom as Will's calculator! The most blatant, for lack of a better word, is "U is for Undivided." That's the one that has the Margot and Brendan parallels. If you want, I can see about sending it.

* SPOILERS FOLLOW *

My two favorite parts. Robyn calls Dingo "Harry Monmouth", thus making that name canon at last; now Shakespeare's history plays are making it into the Gargoyles Universe as well as his tragedies and comedies. (Unless you count Oberon's line "The game is afoot" in "Ill Met By Moonlight", since it appears in "Henry V" - but more people would associate it with Sherlock Holmes.) And she refers to Yama as a tengu (I'd suspected from early on that the Ishimura gargoyles were connected to the tengu legend, and am delighted to see that confirmed.)

Did anybody notice that Yama was the one member of the team who remained silent throughout the introductory pages (the ones paralleling the leika reel)?

The Tazmanian Tiger has to count as the corniest villain in the entire Gargoyles Universe; I was initially surprised that somebody like him would even show up. Though I would like to know where he got his thylacines from. Is somebody running a "Jurassic Park"-type experiment to bring extinct animals back from extinction? (And I'd also wondered if he might wind up joining the Ultra-Pack, after an upgrade.)

I also got a kick out of the "Superman" parody in Dingo's entrance.

Does anybody know if the song playing during the early part of the book was a real one or an invention of Greg's?

I wonder if the rock where Dingo met the Shaman (and where Robyn afterwards showed up) was supposed to be Ayers Rock/Uluru.

I liked the way that Matrix was handled in it - still clearly having a lot to learn about humans, astonished that Dingo's turned out to have a criminal record, and being the one to accept Robyn's offer.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other issues now.

*** Big Bad Spoilers ***

Picked up "Gargoyles: Bad Guys" #1 today. The first issue was a lot of fun. Has a definite 'First Act' feel to it, which is fine, that's what it is.

There are two stories going on here, one about how the team is formed, and another which takes place two months later. The latter seems to obviously be the story from the "Bad Guys" leica reel, which is cool. I look forward to finding out, after all these years, what their mission there is.

But, let's talk about the real meat of the story. We open in Sydney, Australia where we meet, ::snickers:: The Tazmanian Tiger. A one-shot villain, if I ever saw one. If he were a Spider-Man villain, he'd be in the Legion of Losers. Which is fine, not every villain can be, or should be, Xanatos, Demona or Thailog. Knowing Greg, he'll probably use this guy again eventually down the road, however, he'll need a major upgrade to be at all credible. Bit of an anecdote, when I first saw this guy, I laughed so hard, I think the other patrons as the sushi place thought I was having a seizure.

Dingo and Matrix show up and do their thing. Australia's premere superhero. Loved, respected. I liked the brief Superman homage. Also, nice creepy forboding about how Matrix inserts itself into Dingo's spine. Looking forward to seeing where that's going.

Enter Hunter, probably my favorite character in the book. For those not in the know, she's a mysterious, badass chick with a gun and a cool mask. I look forward to seeing things from her perspective soon. Right now, we're seeing things from Dingo's point of view, and he obviously does not like her... yet. But, given the solicitation for #3, I think we'll be getting that.

What did surprise me is that it was Matrix, and not Dingo who accepted Hunter's offer. Matrix wasn't even really under threat, and I have my doubts that it was on Hunter's recruitment list.

Now, they're heading to Tokyo to hunt a Tengu. I can't wait to read it.

Artwise, this looked good. I think the book works well in black and white? Would I prefer color? Yeah, who wouldn't. But I don't care. The inking and toning looks good. I'll admit, I'd love to see some of those newer characters in color, but it's fine.

The cover. I'm still not quite sold. It looks good, and the Wanted posters as covers idea is fun, but, and especially for a first issue, I think something a little more dynamic and eye-catching would have been better. A group shot of the team. Or, perhaps, another of the characters. Hunter, maybe Dingo. Matrix doesn't really have a design that jumps out at you.

Still, a very fun book and I look forward to seeing where this goes. The "Gargoyles" Universe is expanding, and it's much bigger and richer than just Goliath and his clan in Manhattan. I want to see more, much more.

We know that the Bad Guys and Pendragon stories are planned because they take place at about the time that the main comic is right now. Presumably the Timedancer set is intended to be Brooklyn leaving, returning, and one adventure in betwee. I think it is most likely that if spin-offs continue, Greg would concentrate on whatever is happening at the same time as the main series. Most likely more Pendragon and Bad Guys, maybe Timedancer or Dark Ages during years when nothing is happening in those Bad Guys or Pendragon according to his master timeline.
New Olympians, I'm sure won't happen for a while. Going by Terry's age, I'd expect it no sooner than 2008 in Gargverse time.

Starlioness> I've thought about that before myself. Hopefully the spinoffs do well enough that we get to find out. Maybe it'll go Bad Guys, Pendragon, Timedancer and then back to Bad Guys again or something. Given Terry's age, I doubt Greg would want to start up New Olympians very soon. And 2198 is just so distant and incorporates so much info it wouldn't surprise me if Greg holds off on that for a bit too. Dark Ages would be cool, but I dunno when/how Greg would want to start that off. Maybe after he does 6 issues of Timedancer he'll let us vote on what spin-off should continue. Who knows?

The most important thing to remember is that we must make sure any new books coming out (Gargoyles, a spin-off, or the trade paperback) sell well enough to warrant more issues. Pendragon and Timedancer are not even guaranteed.

He and Hacker were partners in the FBI, presumably for several years and certainly since well before the gargoyles were even awakened. Clearly they were interested in him even before the idea of using him to manipulate the gargoyles came up- they think ahead and pull a lot of strings, but I can't believe they had anything to do with Xanatos awakening the clan.> I didn't say/want to imply that the presence of the gargoyles alone got him into the society, but after he became a member, I would like to think that he was moved close/closer to the top of list of candidates that the society would consider for the job of head of a gargoyles task force. <After all, we don't know how much was in that letter of his- maybe they knew years ago that gargoyles would eventually come to Manhattan.> That would be an issue for Timedancer. Of course a deeper question would be how far in advance/if the society opened Xanatos's letter to himself?

Of course, now that we know that there has always been ~666 members of the society at all times, did the Norman ambassador try to track down who gave him that letter to give to the Society?

Matt - <Looking back, a lot of things would be neatly explained if Maria Chavez was a member.> Not necessarily. But, given how much I'm still off/mystified by the size and scope of the society's membership, I don't want to take a stand. What would be worse in speculation: being wrong for the right reason or being right for the wrong reason?

Phoenician - <Seriously, who would have thought five-six years ago that we'd be getting new canon every month AND a regularly empty question queue to boot!> *pulls out a temporal calculator* 3-4 years ago, I would have bet money solidly against the question queue being cleaned and staying clean. 3-4 years ago, I would only bet on getting "canon-in-training" coming out maybe once in a blue moon.

Fortunately/unfortunately, I am giving my brother money to drive by to pick the new comic on Thursday. The roads will be a lot safer that way. Am I the only one who has trouble not wanting to put the comic down after buying it, even while driving home?

I have been saying that it seems obvious that Castaway is Jon Canmore, but of course I can only say that it looks obvious once you know it. This was one of those things that was spoiled to me before I saw Hunter's Moon (let alone bought the comic) so I didn't have to figure it out myself.

Like Todd, I like the fantasy elements of Gargoyles best, and the Pack, Illuminati, and gangster stuff have generally been my least favorite parts of the show. But I am looking farward to more of Fang, and I'm also interested to learn more about Yama and Dingo who are my favorite members of the Squad. (Being as they're the only characters who seem to want redemption). I especially hope to learn more about the Ishimura Clan, and Fang's past.

I don't know if I suspected that Castaway was Jon Canmore right away, but I did suspect him immediately to have something to do with the Canmores, in light of his surname (it matched the pattern of the Canmores' aliases in "Hunter's Moon").

"Bad Guys" was the spin-off in Greg Weisman's Master Plan that interested me the least (probably because I don't go as much for straightforward action-thrillers as for stories with a more fantastic/mythological tone), but I'm still planning to buy the issues. It's in the same universe, the leads were established as memorable characters in the original series, and we've got Karine Charlebois doing the art. (Anyone who's seen #5 of "Gargoyles" will understand why that last one's an incentive.)

I know how you feel, Matt. I'm almost more excited about Bad Guys #1 than I am about Gargoyles #7. As Greg says, it's monthly Gargoyles material; not the same characters, but the same universe. I think I'll be fine without the regular cast. It took me several viewings of "The Silver Falcon" before I realized that Broadway was the only gargoyle featured.

I'm facing a minor dilemma this week. My comic store offers a loyalty program where each $5 purchase earns a stamp on a card. When you reach fifty stamps, you've earned $50 in store credit. But stamps are only earned for a full $5 purchase ($0.01 through $4.99 earns 0 stamps, $5.00 through $9.99 earns 1 stamp, etc.) This week Bad Guys is the only comic I'll be picking up, and $2.95 will not earn me any stamps. The smart thing would be to wait and pick up Bad Guys later with some of my other titles, but I don't think I can wait that long. (I know some of you wait weeks for yours to arrive in the mail. I'm just that pathetic.)

Yeah, I know. That was the difference I thought of too.

Heres a cool thing about "Strangers". All these years of the fandom, we've been stuck between 1994-1996. This is the first time canon material will take us a new year into the (real) future. Greg says "Strangers" starts in 1997.

Another thing that has been on my mind is that "Strangers", because it is a spin-off, will be the first time we get a canon story without any of our leads (Goliath, Elisa, etc). I think we will naturally incorporate it into canon, since it clearly is the Gargoyles Universe we love, and yet I think it's gonna be interesting. I dunno, I'm probably not verbalizing this thought well. I guess I'm curious to see what our thoughts are on a new cast in a new series. And it'll be interesting to have two series' running alongside each other. All of this will be new for us.

Greg is right though, what a time to be a Gargoyles fan. It's times like this that make me think of the incidents where we doubted we'd ever see new stories. I know some of us even voiced those concerns here. I'm glad we all kept the faith, esspecially Greg Weisman. I mean, wow! The best I ever hoped for was Gargoyles up and running again. And now a concurrent spin-off... Unreal.

While we don't have any evidence for Chavez being in the Illuminati, in a deleted line from "Hunter's Moon Part Three" (it was in the radio play at the 2001 Gathering), she tells Matt to start up the Gargoyle Taskforce. I'd speculated earlier that the Illuminati might have wanted Matt in charge of that, since he was an ally of Goliath's clan and would therefore serve as a means of restraining its activities. (And, if they want the Quarrymen to thrive, a Gargoyle Taskforce hampered by its own leader would be an advantage. Nothing like a perception that the authorities aren't doing enough to solve the problem to encourage people to turn to vigilantism.) But if Chavez was the one who had Matt placed in charge, it would only work as an Illuminati scheme if she was in the Society.

(Then again, maybe that line wasn't dropped from the television episode because of time constraints, but for some other reason.)

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

It's probably easier for the Illuminati to keep tabs on Matt as a member than have him running around trying to expose them. But his associations with Elisa Maza and the gargoyles probably have a lot to do with why he got a membership, too.

I don't recall any indications that Maria Chavez was a member, though. In fact... isn't Shari the first female we've seen among their ranks?

Well, that much is obvious, but my point is that there are a lot of conspiracy theorists in the world. Surely they don't assign Agents to every one of them. Matt clearly is something special, and I'm just wondering how he got on their radar.

"Unless they were utterly incompetent, they knew that sooner or later the gargoyles would be revealed to the public. Given that info, they would need somebody that they could control to be in charge of a group investigating the gargoyles."

Now that's an interesting concept. The Illuminati certainly do think ahead. However, while that may explain their offering him membership, keep in mind that they've been monitoring him for a while. He and Hacker were partners in the FBI, presumably for several years and certainly since well before the gargoyles were even awakened. Clearly they were interested in him even before the idea of using him to manipulate the gargoyles came up- they think ahead and pull a lot of strings, but I can't believe they had anything to do with Xanatos awakening the clan. Or did they? After all, we don't know how much was in that letter of his- maybe they knew years ago that gargoyles would eventually come to Manhattan. I'm not sure about that, and I don't think it explains Matt, but it's interesting to ponder. That's what I love about these discussion forums- together, we come up with ideas that are better than anything we'd think of on our own.

On Bluestone: I'll agree that Matt Bluestone and (as FBI Liasion) Martin Hacker are the eyes and ears for the Illuminati's intentions with the gargoyles. Heck, they even have a member who are wants to destroy the entire race, a member who's (more or less) an "ally" with the Manhattan Clan, and a member who IS a gargoyle.

Matt Bluestone topic> It appears that his current efforts are to control the task force while protecting the Gargoyles. He appears to have put his conquest to expose the Illuminati aside, for now. Maybe all along it was more of a quest to prove it to himself that it existed. And according to Hacker, they approve with his current efforts, but we all know Matt knows better than to trust him and the whole organization. So while he remains a member, he will use it as he can to benefit his efforts in protecting the Gargoyles.

Or maybe Matt brings about a major setback for the Illuminati - not enough to destroy it, but enough to force it into dormancy for a while, and it's managed to rebuild itself by 2198.

Another tempting possibility is that Matt finds out that the Illuminati isn't as malevolent as he initially believed it to be - maybe even the world's become dependent upon it to such an extent that if Matt were to bring the Society down, the result would be a new Dark Age. He thinks that it's a threat, yes - but then, he apparently also originally thought that the gargoyles were a threat before he met them in "Revelations".

Speaking of Illuminati rankings:

Something else that recently occurred to me- I wonder why the Illuminati takes Matt so seriously. An ex-FBI New York cop doesn't really seem like a huge threat, and yet they not only assign an agent to be partnered with him and watch over him, but even give him membership to buy him off. This made sense to me when I assumed there were thousands of members, but it's a fairly small group. There are a lot of conspiracy theorists out there- what is it about Matt that makes them pay him that much attention?

Today is my b-day. And people around here just go crazy for it. I don't know why. Oh, fun fact - I share my birthday with Eva Longoria. So I have a perfect icebreaker if I ever meet Teri Hatcher.

But why would it come on Thursday?

Matt> I use Diamond Comics as my source for information, and it appears so does SLG because they link right to the shipping list from their release date page.

So going by that only piece of information, Bad Guy #1 is EXPECTED on November 29, 2007. That's all the confirmation that exists at this time.

So is Bad Guys coming out Wednesday or Thursday? I've heard both. Do we have a confirmation on this?

It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?- George Lucas on Spider-Man 3

Someone gave Jonny some words to live by today:
Jonny Modlin you still wouldn't have the complete series of Gargoyles with Gargoyles Season 1 and Gargoyles Season 2 part 1 and Gargoyles Season 2 part 2. You would also need Gargoyles: The Goliath Choronicles AKA Gargoyles Season 3, which if they released in volumes we would get Gargoyles Season 3 The Goliath Chronicles part 1 and Gargoyles Season 3 The Goliath Chronicles Part 2 to complete the Gargoyles series along with Gargoyles Season 1 and Gargoyles Season 2 part 1 and Gargoyles Season 2 part 2.

I'll be the number two guy here in Scranton in six weeks. How? Name repetition, personality mirroring and never breaking off a handshake. I'm always thinking one step ahead. Like a... carpenter... that makes stairs.
