I think the only holiday Oberon recognizes is Oberon Day. When and how long it is celebrated varies from year to year.

Should be "chose" rather than "didn't choose". That's what I get for not proofreading my own comments.

BISHANSKY: [I doubt Oberon celebrates Christmas.]

Probably not Christmas itself, but the winter solstice plays such an important role in the calendars of old and myth and legend that I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the Third Race didn't choose to hold festivities around that time.

The winter solstice probably holds a different significance to gargoyles than humans, of course. To humans, winter was when the sun seemed to be dying, and the solstice became a time of relief as the days began to lengthen again, and it was clear that the sun would live. To gargoyles, the nights, when they're active, are at their longest, and once the solstice passes, they'll be spending more time in stone sleep until the summer solstice.

Speaking of Avalon and its hour-inside/day-outside time oddity, how does the differing day/night cycle affect gargoyles' sleep schedule? I imagine that unless the Teleport to Avalon spell compensates for this time discrepancy, one might cast that spell at midnight and a few minutes later arrive at Avalon at noon, for example.

I imagine that that would wreak havoc on gargoyles' sleeping patterns unless some sort of Avalonian magic compensates for it... which probably is the case, come to think of it.

I doubt Oberon celebrates Christmas.

Besides, chaotic weather based on mood is more Mab's forte.

I could see Oberon doing that just to be a jerk, and for added irony it would be in the middle of July.

All sunny and warm until Oberon decides he wants a white Christmas too.

I think Avalon's case of eternal summer means that the temperature is always warm and the plants are always at the height of their bloom.

I don't know why but I think Avalon's days are like 12 hours day and 12 hours night.

I would guess that Avalon is like a "snow globe" and it's always just summer there. Since the island has a different set of rules for time, I would also guess that the tilt of the earth's axis has no affect on the island either.

Matt's random attempt at a conversation starter for this week:

If its always summer on Avalon, as Angela said, does that mean that the day length there never changes and the nights are less than half the day all the time?

His gods were simple and understandable; Crom was their chief, and he lived on a great mountain, whence he sent forth dooms and death. It was useless to call on Crom, because he was a gloomy, savage god, and he hated weaklings. But he gave a man courage at birth, and the will and might to kill his enemies, which, in the Cimmerian's mind, was all any god should be expected to do.
