I am vengeance! I am the night! I am.. Yiman!

Yi qi...literally, strange wing.

The thing's really quite tiny, but...yeah, kinda does seem like a relative of our gargate friends, doesn't it?

You have to include the "(dinosaur)" part for the link to take you to the correct place... Sorry.

Pretty much at the end of every fight there's going to be a lot of fans that are disappointed by the end result. As for the fight itself while I'm naturally inclined to go with Goliath I have a feeling it could go either way. Though Beast is smarter than Goliath I don't think that will help him in the fight itself. But if Beast figures out to wait for Goliath's stone sleep then there may be trouble.

Goliath and Beast should just kiss and make up.

Todd> It's called Death Battle and it's basically the epitome of "Let's You And Him Fight." Bloodthirsty and wasteful is pretty much stock in trade.

Personally, I'm hoping the entire fight is over a disagreement between their personal interpretations of Dostoyevsky.

It still seems bloodthirsty, and wasteful.

Todd>Yeah two characters always fight to the death on Death Battle. That way no one character can be accused of holding back, no excuses are made for them not to kill. Two fictional characters enter, on fictional character leaves.

Any news or hope of more Gargoyles comics, by SLG or otherwise? Just re-watched the first two seasons and reread Clan Building 1 & 2 and I neeeeeeed more.
Thylacine - [kdpfeilschiefter at gmail dot com]

Do they have to fight each other to the death? Either way, we lose a character.

Goliath can rend steal and stone with his talons, skin and bone would never be able to withstand them. I'm sure Goliath could rip bodies apart with just his strength too.

Pretty sure Goliath would win that fight (seven seconds).

So I don't know who here watches Death Battle on ScrewAttack.com, but for those of you who don't, the last episode was Tony Stark vs. Lex Luthor, a fun match-up.

But the preview for the next one?

X-Men vs. Gargoyles. Beast vs. Goliath. And under the rules of a Death Battle, the desire not to kill is voided.

So...who dies, the mutant or the monster?

It absolutely blows my mind that this show wasn't more successful.

I think I might have been misunderstood (wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last time). I didn't mean that Demona's cells were isolated, I was just using one of them (the Lunfanan cell in particular) as a template for a hypothetical remnant of a clan that had suffered a disaster (like the Wyvern and Mayan clans), leaving only a few members left.

So in less than one hour the RotG kickstarter will be funded and even though I didn't back it, I still congratulate Greg and the whole team for successfully funding this project. I love the idea of kickstarter (well most of the time), but sometimes it bugs me how projects get funded. If you take a closer look at the RotG kickstarter, you will notice that the average backer supported this project with an average of slightly above 100 bucks...

In my opinion this number is way too high, because the audioplay itself is only 25 bucks. To me this feels like Greg got 500 die hard fans to support this project with more money than they should have given. And I'm being honest: If there was a Gargoyles kickstarter, hell I probably would back wayyyy more thant I should, too. But still this number seems a little of to me. Or maybe some of the backers just donated 200 bucks to get that Jim Cummings voicemail without really caring about the project. Now you may think "that's a tough claim you make" and you guys are right, but in the end this kickstarter thing is only there to get this project started... After funding this RotG audioplay has to stand on its own feet, financially.

Now look f.e. at the Veronica Mars movie:
This movie has been funded in one day. It was a huge success on kickstarter, but it was a huge flop in theatres. It failed to stand on its own feed and I am fearing the same will happen to RotG...

In theory if Greg would make the sequel as an audioplay too, he could kickstart that one again, but wouldn't that really be milking the hardcore fanbase? (no offense to you Greg if you somehow read this) After successfully kickstarting the 1st one, you would think it made enough to finance a sequel on its own...

Lastly I want to say that these are just my thoughts on this whole thing. I mean it's up to the people to choose with how much they would back this project, if at all. ;)

A cell is not a clan. It is less static. (Not that clans, back in the day, were supremely static.) You can't assume there would be no cross-polination, so to speak, between cells.
Greg Weisman

After reading some comments and thinking about it, I don't think that after 1000 years and 50 generations (I think I got that right) that there would any Gargoyles of mostly "Scottish" stock in the London clan. I think we have talked about how Constance might have some Scottish stock in her because of her wings. So I think something like that might be lasting impact of any Scottish Gargoyles in the London clan.

When I think of a small clan, I always seem to use the Lunfanan Cell because we know the ages of everyone in that cell. In that cell, I can get about 9 generations before I think they become too closely related, assuming everything works out perfectly. Just to be clear, I am not using those characters, just there names and ages to make in simpler (I don't think Demona would hook up with Brooksbro). Also, when I mean everything works out perfectly, none of the Gargoyles die before they have a chance to parent all possible eggs (1 for Second/Sacrifice, 2 for Brooksbro/Demona, and 3 for Kermit/True), and all the eggs work out so they are a mated male/female pairing.

Inland> I was under the impression that the scent markers were more of a subconscious things. They wouldn't sniff a closely related rookery mate and consciously think "Ah, that's my biological first cousin on my biological mother's side, best find a more genetically compatible mate", they'd "Seems like an alright guy but I'm not really interested in him that way."

Also, the whole point of the scent markers is to prevent closely biologically related gargs from getting too close to each other. So I don't think they would necessarily influence garg parents to favor their biological offspring or vise versa.

And I don't think it's so much a matter that gargoyles never ever know who their biological parents/children are, so much that they're culturally and biologically conditioned not to care. Remember when Elisa pointed out how much Angela resembled Demona back in Avalon Part 2 and Goliath just kinda shrugged?

I'm sure Goliath realized early on that that Angela was his biological daughter but only in a very abstract intellectual way. It wasn't until after the human raised Angela starts expressing an ungargoylian interest in her biological heritage that he starts freaking out about it.

Algernon

I was thinking back on the discussion of gargoyles scent and sense of smell: Wouldn't Demona have known Angela was her daughter immediately? And, I know they don't care much, but wouldn't young gargoyles be able to pinpoint their biological parents? Is there really no small psychological trigger of special, certain affection towards them? Angela seems to.

Adam> Both of your questions would depend on a wide variety of factors, most of them unknown or hypothetical. For instance, in your first question, a major factor in how soon a small clan would all become closely related depends on how closely related they were to begin with. If you assume a clan of roughly equal males and females that are all the same age (of which the Avalon Clan is a prime example), it could be a while, or never, despite some of "the eggs" probably being related from the get-go. As for your second question, this depends on other factors. We have not seen a whole lot of gargoyles with parents from different clans yet (Nashville being the only example I can think of) so we don't really know how gargoyles with multi-ethnic backgrounds will look even after a single generation.
Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]

Matt> I'd need more information on starting population and generational numbers to tell you about the former, but in the case of the latter, the entire Loch Ness Clan would be Scottish.

Heh.

Matt and Brainiac- Thanks for the response to my question. I really enjoyed reading them.

The reason I asked that question is because I am trying to figure out 2 things:

1. How long can a small like (like the size of one of the cells from Demona's clan) last before they become to closely related?
2. If a group of Scottish Gargoyles (like 20 or so) joined with either the Loch Ness Clan or London Clan back in the 10th century, by modern times, would there be a group of Gargoyles in that clan that was mostly "Scottish" stock?

Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Someone asked about viewing Greg's responses in chronological order. With over 20,000 responses over nearly 20 years that's ... a lot of reading. But it's an interesting idea so here's how to do it. Start here: http://s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=1&seq=y

And use that link after the question to go to the next one. The code is very simple, it's just incrementing "qid" by 1. There will be a few qids that return no question, just keep going.

I defined the accesskey 'n' to that link as well, so instead of clicking you can use a keyboard shortcut to 'click' on the link. See http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_global_accesskey.asp to find the shortcut that works for your web browser. For Firefox it's ALT+SHIFT so pressing ALT+SHIFT+n will 'click' the link.

It's not perfect chronological order. All the questions from the old system (the first 696) aren't. Some have dates on them because Greg added the date to his signature. Some don't. The ones that don't are probably the earliest from 1996-1997. The current system started in Sept. 1999 which picks up at 697 and from then on it's chronological order.
