Some good comments on the return of "Doctor Who" as the way to revive an old series - and I was delighted with how the first season gave a good re-introduction to the Doctor and his world, and took care to focus on the essentials (the Doctor, the TARDIS, the sonic screwdriver, the Daleks) - with the advantage of his companion Rose being someone through whose eyes we could learn about those elements. (Of course, it also made use of one or two lesser-known elements, such as the Autons - classic adversaries, but not as famous as the Daleks - though it helped that they were shop-dummies come to life - turning an everyday object into a menace.)

Though I doubt that a revival of "Gargoyles" would take the "cataclysm between the two series" route that "Doctor Who" did with the Time War.

So I don't know if anyone has seen this but the Nostalgia Critic and the Black Nerd discuss how Gargoyles, as well as several other shows, might be rebooted today.

I refer to a new series that's in continuity with the old series as a "soft reboot."For example, the Doctor Who series that started in 2005 is a soft reboot. It acknowledges the old series existed, but started fresh in a way that everything was accessible for people who didn't know about any earlier stories. References to the old series were kept minimal for the first few seasons, so as not to confuse new fans but still give occasional nods to the old. If Gargoyles were rebooted, that's how I'd want it to be. They couldn't make a continuation that required viewers to have memorized a twenty year old show like we have. Clan-Building did a decent job of it, but sadly didn't last. One of the spin-offs might work better. Alternatively, it could be done the same way as Doctor Who- show the Gargoyles in the year 2015 (or whatever the present is) and explain everything from scratch. We'd be on the same page as new fans, and gradually get hints as to what happened in the intervening twenty years. I doubt a show explicitly set in 1996 would be viable today- young viewers would ask "why don't they have cell phones," etc.

PAUL> Strictly speaking, a reboot would be wiping the slate clean and starting over with a brand new continuity. A sequel or a spin-off would keep the existing continuity, either following our original protagonists or new characters in the same universe.

In broad pop culture terms...

Star Trek (2009) is a reboot, MOST of the stuff we've seen in TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY or the first 8 Trek movies never happened in this continuity.

Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens is a sequel, MOST of the stuff we've seen in the first six movies, Clone Wars and Rebels[i] still happened in this continuity.

So, I'd personally rank a hypothetical tv adaptation of [i]Clan Building
as a squeal since presumably, all the stuff we saw in first two seasons still happened in its continuity.

Well, the way I was using "reboot", "Clan-Building" wouldn't fall into that category, because it was continuing the story set in the same universe. To me (maybe I'm misusing the word) "reboot" suggests a new continuity - like, say, "The Batman" being a different take on Batman than "Batman: TAS".

So if, say, a "Gargoyles" revival was to be set in a different universe than the original series, with a different origin for the gargoyles (say, gargoyle statues brought to life by a freak accident), then I would count that as a reboot.

And, yes, let's hope that if Disney decides to bring "Gargoyles" back, it's with Greg Weisman in charge.

I'm not entirely up to speed on TV jargon; would Clan Building (or a hypothetical new Gargoyles TV series based on Clan Building) count as a "reboot"?

I'd be careful what I wish for with regard to any new material from Gargoyles, in any case. So far, Disney hasn't done anything with the Goliath Chronicles, and I hope they never will, but a continuation of the Gargoyles series might happen without the input of Greg Weisman (unless he has some veto power with regard to Gargoyles that I do not know about), and I think that would be as tragic as the Goliath Chronicles.

ANONYMOUS> Yeah, Spring.me got bought out by OKCupid about a month or two back. Around August they assimilated it into their dating site. All the original RP accounts are completely inaccessible, assuming they haven't been totally deleted from the company servers.

'Tis sad but hey, at least we had a good run. ;)

As long as it isn't "reboot" in the sense of a new continuity for "Gargoyles". That would take away a lot of the point in bringing it back.

Don't know if anyone's noticed, but I think spring.me has been put to pasture. Looked like hell when I tried to visit it last month. (both old and new variations!) Now, it just keeps redirecting on a continuous loop to something called udate. (At least with my browser, it loops. What with my add-ons blocking things. Even when I allow, still loops/doesn't load.)

Maybe it's time to say good-bye to the whole SpecGargs/Omniverse thing. For now.

You know, just in case Goosebumps, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Independance Day, Sailor Moon and Boy Meets World all getting spin-offs/sequal/reboots in the space of three or four years didn't tip you off.

Actually, I no longer live in St. Louis, I regret to say. Earlier this year, my parents talked me into moving to Phoenix, Arizona (they felt that St. Louis was becoming too dangerous to live in - I was burglarized in January - and too far away from them - they live in Globe, Arizona). I'm still adjusting to life here in Phoenix (and still miss St. Louis a lot).
