I think changes to Ask Greg are dependent on whether anyone can get Gore's attention. And whether he currently has time to do anything about it.

The Comment Room is working; the discussion just seemed to trickle off. Happens sometimes. Considering its Sunday, things will probably pick up tomorrow after the room is wiped.

By the way, did we actually come to any conclusion or was this all just a repeat of the same ASKGREG debate we had a month or two ago? Is something going to be done or can I look forward to this debate again a month from now? :-)

I've got my website nearly finished. I'm mostly satisfied with the Flash animations I've made for it. There will be two music videos I upload along with my website.

Well... there seem to be a lot of questions that seem pointless I must say, but that's just me. (Also Greg answered my question about why Elisa had a bit part in the reckoning and thats all i ever wanted to know, so I'm happy :P)I mean there are some that are good but not all of them and some could easily be answered by a non Greg Weisman type person (That didn't sound right somehow)

On the back is a multi-color image of 2000's mascot, a cat-like garg with feathered wings, riding a skiff with fireworks and Epcot Center in the background. Even what appears to be the hand of Mickey Mouse holding a magic wand. It says "2000" over Epcot. Then below the image it says, "'Where has Avalon taken us this time?'"

I don't think that limiting the amount of questions that a person can submit to ASKGREG would be a wise move; neither is any sort of registration to be able to submit questions either. Neither of them are newbie friendly and above all ASKGREG is a resource that has to be kept open to everyone. If we close off fandom to new blood then we are effectively killing it.

What everything comes down to is basically having the main ASKGREG page emphasis that the FAQ should be read first and that if the answer is not easily found there then the person should stop by here first. Everything after that is mainly just sorting the questions to keep the backlog down. After looking at all the other options thats really the only way that it can remain an open resource.

The main problem that we are facing now with the backlog is that steps weren't taken earlier; we did talk about it but that didn't come to anything. I just hope that this conversation doesn't end the way the last one did, with the conclusion that something has to be done, figuring out what has to be done, and then dropping it for another month or two. Right now nothing really fancy is needed; any ASKGREG redesign can wait. All that has to really be dealt with at this point is to just sort out the Questions Asked Queue to bring it down to a managable size.

I'm getting my cat scan in 7 and a half hours wish me luck :).
The ask Greg is for ppl to ask ?'s, But how that person took it, blew it out of the water, I agree that a person should only be aloud to post a ceratin amount of ?'s a week or month it would cut down on space more than you think. I also think that if a person asks a ? that was already answered it should somehow say it ( I'm not sure if there such a way) I myself asked a few ?'s knowing that they were already answered but I'm getting more and more forgetful. I guess post in hugh brite writing CHECK THE FACS before you ask. I also think it would be kinda neat if a person was asking ?'s just to be a smart ass that the site could somehow block that person IP address.
well those are my thoughts take em how you will :)

I think a team of 6 or so people could cut the queue down in a few weeks to a month with dedication, so there really isn't that much need for a room wipe. But the direct quoting from the FAQ is a great idea. Now we just need to get Gore's attention to it.

Mooncat> Putting it in an ezboard-like format would make it difficult to categorize questions and answers into an archive the way they are now. And I'm not sure it's safe to put the questions in the topic headers--Greg might risk seeing an original idea as he skims the board.

The one benefit I see to this idea would be that the whole fandom could contribute to answering questions. But this isn't a 'Ask the Fandom' thing. It's 'Ask Greg', and the committee will probably be limited to quoting what he's already said in the archives. And that limitation is actually reassuring in a way, as it protects fans from having the committee mask their own opinions as answers. Not that I suspect any of the current volunteers would do such a thing. ;)

I like the idea of an Answers Committee. I'm willing to volunteer some time. If nothing else I look at it as a really good opportunity/excuse to become familiar with the huge archives of information already posted.

May I suggst the questions be placed in a threaded message board format? Each question would be a topic line, then answers could be slotted beneath by whoever on the Answers team can answer, and updates and additons can be easily inserted that way. This way Greg can always look them over at leisure and make any corrections or comments as he deems appropriate.

Just some thoughts.

Okay, Vash asked for my two cents. Here is about six.

1. I'm not in favor of a room wipe. People have been waiting. Others have hit (and hit and hit and hit) and probably run, but some people with legitimate questions and comments have been waiting.

2. Any solution MUST be newbie-friendly, or at least as newbie-friendly as the mess we're in now.

3. The idea of a committee screening questions is appealing with the following caveats:
a. Every member of the committee must be extremely diplomatic. More diplomatic than I am even. If you're going to represent me, then I can't risk you scaring people off or pissing them off. Yes, some questions are annoying as hell, but as a committee member you'd need to supress your desire to point that out. Assume every question is a gem. Even if you know it's not.
c. Every answer not given personally by me, needs to be clearly labelled as such.
d. My preference would be for every committee answer to be a direct quote from the archives or FAQ. That is, still my words. And preferably, not taken too much out of context. Whether this is done with links or cut&paste, I don't know.

4. I don't mind suspending the question-asked function for the time being, until we get a handle on this. But once I start rambling on eps again, I'd want people to be able to respond with comments.

5. I love the idea of redesigning the main ASK GREG page to BOLDLY point out the inevitable delay and backlog of simply submitting a question to me, without utilizing other resources first (i.e. the comment room, the faq, the archives, etc.).

6. All this is moot without Gore. This is HIS site. If volunteers can help him, that's great. But only if he wants that help. I'm not in favor of anything that Gore does not approve of.

Aaron, actually, one of my questions is next in line for Greg to answer, but i know that there are alot of benefits to a room wipe and would let it go... as long as i have a couple days or more notice to get my questions off the queue so i can reask them!
it would be terrible if the new Ask Greg Staff had to go through all those questions, but having to wait a year before the results of the Staff become apparent isn't good either, the best solution is wiping the room... anyone who still cares about having their question answered can repost it later...
but of course this would be up to the Staff to decide... so besides Aaron and Greg B any other volunteers??? i assume Todd will be involved since he and Gore are the current staff. i would LOVE to do it, but honestly i'm not around often enough to be reliable...
anyway, keep the ideas flowing everyone, its gonna be great if we can actually get this going soon!

If we end up doing this, I'll also volunteer to answer repeated questions.

I'm not sure limiting questions by IP address will work. Won't that just penalize people who have static IPs while allowing people on dial-ups to flood Ask Greg as they please?

As for people being disappointed that Greg didn't answer their question personally, I'm sorry, but them's the breaks. Greg does this in his free time, and he shouldn't have to waste it reinventing the wheel. Besides, much of the time, the committee would probably just be posting links anyway, not freelancing answers. Most of the words would still be Greg's. Heck, most of the online Q&A forums I've seen answer questions solely at the whim of the owner. Greg's commitment to answering almost everything that comes in is admirable, but it's also brought us to where we are now, with a one gig backlog and extreme frustration with the existing system.

I'm still deeply opposed to wiping the cue. Imagine how bad that would suck for those people who've waited a year and are next in line.

the "hero-worship" factor is an important one to consider. alot of newbies may not care how original or logical their question is as long as they get an answer from Greg. i can understand their reasoning, but i don't sympathize with them. esspecially now that the FAQ is up and running, if people want greg to respond to them, they need to come up with an intelligent and original question.
a username and password system is a nice idea, but i almost don't think its too neccesary, as long as people are not asking FAQ's, submitting ideas or just being silly i don't care if they reveal their names.

i think the best idea we have going for us is something along these lines:
1. shut down the Ask greg feature.
2. select a commitee of Ask Greg Staff.
3. have the commitee (with suggestions from the CR crowd and Greg) decide on the new rules and workings of Ask Greg.
4. if deemed neccesary, give a couple weeks notice and clear the queue.
5. reopen Ask Greg with new rules and regulations in place.

my personal opinion on the new workings is a commitee to look over every submitted question, if it is a FAQ send the person the answer or a link to the FAQ, if it is a story idea drop it, if it is an unintelligent question drop it. the questions that remain can then be submitted to Greg, Todd can probably go over them one more time just to make sure they are ok. another good idea is to make a feature where only one question from a certain IP address can be submitted to greg a week.

feel free to add on, subtract or tear apart my ideas and plan. i just want SOMETHING to change before the end of this month!

The one potential drawback to "shutting down the 'submit question' feature" is that it'll keep people from submitting ramble-replies to any of Greg's episode rambles while that takes place. But it's been a while since Greg's done one, and maybe by the time that he has the opportunity to start re-watching those episodes again and posting his rambles, he'll have been able to catch up somewhat on the questions.

(Of course, there's always also the possibility of the problem being solved by some glitch at Station 8 wiping out the entire questions queue, a bit like the case a few years ago when "Ask Greg" went down for a year because of Gorebash running into a problem with a corrupted disk, although I doubt that we'd consider it an ideal solution).

But, yes, the questions are piling up in such a way that soon, I doubt that Greg will ever be able to catch up on them at all if this keeps up. Maybe the only way to solve the queue problem is to go for having "substitute answerers", although that won't appeal to the people submitting the questions.

It's amazing how fast the comment room can go from silly to serious. I can almost hear Dan Rather's voice... "Welcome back to Day Two of our continuing coverage of the emerging 'Ask Greg' crisis."

I doubt that any of the solutions proposed so far will solve the largest problem of "anonymous" people loading up the queue with frivolous questions. The problem is not that the person(s) doing this don't know where the FAQ is. They are simply just to lazy to look at it and/or too inconsiderate of Greg's time to care. And the only way you're going to be able to limit such abuses is by setting up a system of user names and passwords where everyone will have to register and supply a unique, valid e-mail address in order to access the queue. Then you can restrict each user to a limit of so many questions in a set period of time, making it a lot harder for one person to flood the queue.

I don't see what's so horrible about having a staff of two or three people pre-screen the questions and weed out the ones that have already been asked and answered before passing them on to Greg, either. There's got to come a point where he just gets tired of repeating himself. Me personally... I would tire of the routine very quickly if I spent an hour every night answering questions and every answer I gave began with "I know I've answered this before..."

Just my two cents.

I think it would be a pity to wipe out the questions to be asked at 'Ask Greg' - why not just shut down the 'ask a question' facility until the backlog is cut down, as has been done before? Another easy solution rather than having a panel to ask questions would be to have a big sign above the 'ask question' box linking to this comment room and saying, "rather than asking Greg, you might be able to get a quicker response at the S8 comment room" or something like that.

Aaron> I've considered suggesting something like that before myself. If all a person wants is the answer to a simple question that we all know, it's a lot faster and easier on Greg if someone else takes care of it. But I think Matt is right--some people are bound to be upset if anyone other than Greg answers their questions. And Greg's been very tolerant of the types of questions he'll accept; I don't think he'd start allowing others to decide what he should and should not answer (except when it comes to screening out original ideas). Course that's just a guess--I have no idea what Greg thinks about this whole situation (I really wish he would post something about it and let us know what options he'd be willing to consider).

Yeah, when was the last time the Ask Greg queue was brought up in here? About a month ago? And still, here we are again complaining about it and still, nothing has been done to address it.

The queue should be wiped completely. Anyone who absolutely cares about their questions should copy and paste them someplace until further notice, and a 1-2 weeks notice should be posted on the Ask Greg page letting any frequent comers to see that the queue will be wiped soon and will become operational as a clean slate again. This would give anyone who cares about Greg to answer his/her questions enough time to *not* post them or gather them before the queue is cleared.

Also, while this whole ordeal is underway, the Ask Greg pages of S8 need updated to the PHP standards that this CR has enjoyed since Gore implemented them. (comment.php instead of comment.html)

And while I'm at it...we should certainly have a good many Gargoyles fans around who understand some programming concepts of websites/database/forms management. All we need is a few CS majors that can write some useful features for this site. You know, help Gore out a little. I'm still wondering what ever happened to moving Ask Greg into a mySQL database and adding a search function to transverse its FAQ more quickly. It might take a little effort, but perhaps more people willing to assist Todd with handling FAQ and Gore with additions/modifications to this site would greatly improve upon its ease of use and management. As a side effect, it would help Greg a lot too.

I and Matt know that (and Matt, I know you can agree with me on this) when we first found this place, it always seemed Greg would answer questions almost 3 times every week. Hell, I can even remember being online refreshing the questions answered page at the exact moment Greg would be online answering questions. And this happened more than once. I'm not saying that Greg not answering questions as frequently now is in any way his fault. It's not his fault. I know he might be very busy nowadays and such, and it's perfectly understandable.

My point is, when I know there's things the fandom can contribute to help, why not let us help out a little? (sigh) Yeah I know, this has turned into a ramble...but every once in a while a guy can ramble about something, right? :)

If I remember right, the G99 mascots were called Alamo and Bluebonnet. I think Siryn dressed up as Bluebonnet.

Ask Greg> I'd really, really hate to just wipe the que. I think, honestly, the only viable solution is a volunteer committee, to try to clear the que from the top down while Greg attacks it from the bottom.

Ask Greg would probably have to be split into Questions answered by Greg and Questions answered by the AG staff. The volunteers would essentially perform an amped up version of what Todd does now, only they would screen frequently-asked, and nonsensical, as well as simply inappropriate questions.

Given the remarkable disinclination of people to scan the archives/read the FAQ/expend any effort whatsoever, the AG staff could simply cut and paste the answers out of the FAQ, or the archives for less frequently asked questions, or at least post links to the relevant answers. Anything unanswerable by the staff would be passed on to Greg.

I think such a committee, perhaps as small as three-four people, could cut the que in half by Christmas.

And I'll volunteer to help, so I don't fall in the old "Complaining but never doing anything" trap.

Okay, yes, the truth comes out. I have no time these days. So posting about t-shirts is my way of letting you know I haven't vanished.

Anyway....

Shirt #12:

White!

On the front, small over the left breast:

"GARGOYLES
WORLD TOUR
DALLAS TEXAS"

On the back is a picture of the G1999 Mascot. (I'm blanking on his name. Rowdy? Alamo? Dang.) He's sort of a bullish gargoyle wearing a cowboy hat, blue jeans and standing in front of what I'm guessing is the Texas State Flag. He's hitch-hiking and holding a sign that reads

"GWT
or Bust"

This shirt, I believe, was actually given to me at G1998. Sort of a preview of what was to come.

i'm glad we are finally discussing this again, this time lets try to do something about it!!!!!!
heres some points that i've noticed:

- obviously something needs to drastically change about the entire Ask Greg system, whether that is a room wipe, a new system, new rules or whatever...
- i think even if people know about the FAQ they don't check it cuz they don't want to look up their answer cuz it takes time and effort and furthermore, and this is a big one, i think, they want GREG WEISMAN to answer their question! sorta a hero worship thing...

my ideas for possible solutions:

-we can set up a system that only allows one or two questions from a certain IP address a month. people could still post more qyuestions than that, but they'd have to go to different computers to do it... that would cut down on quantity a bit...
- we should set up a system where people would submit their questions and email address then we have Todd or someone or a commitee look at the question, they then email the person if the question is an idea or FAQ and tell them why the question wasn't going to go to Greg. if the question is legitimate and original they submit it to the Ask Greg queue. that way only the appropriate questions go to Greg but the people asking questions wouldn't feel ignored. you just have to ask a good question for it to see Greg's eyes...
- whatever we do, i'm afraid a room wipe will almost be a neccesity...

lets put something into action by the end of October, ok? this problem isn't going away, its only getting worse...

ASKGREG BACKLOG - The easiest solution is just to wipe the queue and start over from scratch. Maybe ASKGREG has to be split into two queues - one to contain questions and one for rambles on Greg's rambles. I do think though that the ASKGREG frontpage needs a major redesign to emphasis the FAQ and this comment room as a resource. The problem is that they aren't in big bold letters that catch someone's attention before they head off to post anything in the Questions Asked Queue.

(And of course we should be prepared to have a very welcoming and understanding attitude to anyone who decides to post what might be considered an annoying repeat question in here - we don't want to scare people away and this would open the room up to endless "Why was the show Cancelled?" questions that we would have to take in good grace.)

In any case I think that the current backlog should be sorted to take out those reader ramblings and keep them posted. Questions might repeat themselves but comments on a rambling are hard to reconstruct and tend to be original. They should be saved.

JURGAN - You wrote: [I'm fearful of a future in which the fanbase is split into the "old guard" and the "newbies," just like the Tenchi fanbase was after Cartoon Network (of course, there I was a newbie, whereas here I'd get to be one of the elitist snobs).]

I'd hate for that to happen. I like to think that we are very open and welcoming to newbies in particular. New blood is a good thing for a fandom and we should want to encourage it; if someone just started watching the show and has a question then I don't mind answering it even if the answer basically boils down to "Take a look at the FAQ". Its the end of the fandom if we ever come to the point where someone asks an innocent newbie question and gets shouted down or completely ignored. I think that the problem is that all those newbie questions aren't being directed in here; there is a link to the FAQ on the ASKGREG page that needs to be increased to font size 20 (or so) and a similar sized link to this room that should also be posted there with emphasis being made that they would get a faster answer if they posted here rather than there.

I'm afraid that I already cleared the bulk of Anonymous's questions this morning (I hadn't done any question-clearing for a while, and felt that I needed to catch up), except for a couple that violated the "no ideas" clause. I'm sorry about that.

Truth to tell, I'm afraid that we're going to have to find a fairly drastic solution for the "Ask Greg" backlog. There's a year's worth of questions waiting to be answered, and poor Greg no longer seems to have any time to answer them (given that it's been over a month since he last answered anything - the bulk of his comments lately have been the shirt descriptions that he's been posting in this comment room). I'm starting to fear that he'll never be able to catch up now. Not unless the entire queue gets wiped and we have to start all over again from scratch.

A shame how this thing has gotten abused.

I think that these Anonymous questions are from the same person. I can't tell for sure, but I thought it was just one person who was essentially using Anonymous as an alias. Let's face it, we're all more or less anonymous online. Given the form, it doesn't seem like it's necessary to provide any information about one's real identity. On the other hand, it's probably not the same person who sent in a batch months ago.

These questions are unbearably irritating because there's no reason to be asking them. What was meant by trivia questions was "what did so-and-so say in this episode" and the like, ie, things that anyone should know. Or the questions are things that have already been answered ad nauseum, even in the FAQ. I saw a question asking if Gargoyles are aliens. Read the FAQ! I saw one question asking "why was the show canceled?" WHY WAS THE SHOW CANCELED! ARE YOU F****** KIDDING ME! JUST READ THE DAMNED FAQ! [Jurgan injects himself with a syringe full of morphine.] Sorry, I'm getting worked up here, but it's just so inconsiderate. From what I saw, the backlog appears to go back almost a year. The thing is, many of these questions could be answered by people right here in this room. I'm guessing a lot of the people asking these questions are, dare I say it, newbies. With Toon Disney playing the show in syndication, I'd imagine there are quite a few people who never saw the show in its original run and only found out about it through the recent playings. I'm fearful of a future in which the fanbase is split into the "old guard" and the "newbies," just like the Tenchi fanbase was after Cartoon Network (of course, there I was a newbie, whereas here I'd get to be one of the elitist snobs). This leads to a lot of stupid arguments- "I'm a bigger fan than you because I've been a fan longer!" What idiocy.

I'm getting off track here, but the point I was trying to make was that if these people are new to the fanbase, which I'm guessing they are, they shouldn't immediately run to ask Greg all of their burning questions. There is a very large archive for them to look through (though I don't blame them if they don't want to slog through the unsorted archives- I know I'm not). If that doesn't work, they can come to this room and there's a good chance someone here could answer the questions. Asking Greg should be a last resort if there's no other way to answer the questions, and I don't think people should be allowed to ask questions that can be answered in other ways. Gore already screens for original ideas being suggested, so he might as well screen for previously answered questions.

On the back, in a kind of pastiche of the posters for the Broadway Musical of Beauty & the Beast we have stylized head profile silhouettes of Goliath, Broadway, Brooklyn and Lexington. Below which, it says: "NEW YORK CITY, AUGUST 1998".

Sheesh, is the Ask Greg questions a 1 megabyte file by now?

Todd, if you haven't done so by now, please stop clearing questions until Ask Greg catches up. Also, I would like to see a fix on the amount of questions that can be cleared at any one time and even a shut down of submitting Ask Greg Questions if the backlog gets too great. [Of course, I wouldn't mind reopening it temporarily just for Gathering Journals and DCVs.] Follow-ups to questions take forever and if Greg doesn't have his timeline handy, timeline related questions will get skipped over and getting answers will have to wait forever to get through again.

Could there be a ban on rapid fire questions? For example, a person can only submit up to 3 different questions in a row.

Could there be another forum setup just for DCVs and Gathering Journal Entries?

There's however a greater point of annoyance in these people being anonymous. Just make it a rule already that no questions from anonymous people will become accepted. Or (the equivalent) from people who flood tens of question but obviously use a different nick each single time they post.

Make people hold a consistent identity. It's less annoying when you know there's a real person who really wants to know somewhere behind those questions.

And then delete every question asked by "anonymous". If they don't understand already they are being annoying, then it's time they learned...

And happy belated birthday, Greg, Airwalker... :-)

No, I do, I just know that, that person is going to look back at that page. Even though I probably made it worse by doing that, and I didnt mean to but I did try to help :I

Ask Greg> It doesn't seem like the same anonymous this time. But I suggest you just wipe it clean. However, one brave soul did try to answer some of those questions. but the poor girl doesn't realize that that isn't how Ask Greg works.

I don't approve of flooding Ask Greg, but what's wrong with trivia questions? There could be interesting stories behind some of those answers. I also wouldn't lay the blame for the queue entirely on this person. Would it have mattered if he'd spaced these questions over several months? The backlog would still be just as long as it is now. I think a bigger problem is people who refuse to read to FAQ and waste Greg's time with questions that have already been answered.

TODD> Three words. Don't clear them. Kick them out, this "person" has been pulling this crap for over a year. He's the reason Greg is so far behind now anyway.

I don't believe it. *sigh* Anonymous has just asked another ton of questions at "Ask Greg" and they're nearly all trivia ones. Hasn't he or she noticed just how long the queue already is? *shakes his head in disbelief*

I think I'm lost.

Getting in on the pants bit: From the interviews on The Heroes Awaken tape

Jonathan Frakes: I play David Xanatos, the rich and powerful businessman who seeks to exploit the pants of the gargoyles... ...for his own purposes.

Marina Sirtis: I'm Marina Sirtis and I play Demona. Demona is the bad pants. She's the one that, uh, is totally opposite to all the other pants. Demona is the evil pants.

Jonathan Frakes: To bring these mythical creatures to life, one of the most impressive production teams ever assembled for an animated series is hard at work. Master animators and story tellers stretch the limits of their pants with dramatic visuals and suspenseful adventures.

Jamie Thomason: The style of pants is really bold, strong, a lot of action.

Greg Guler: In the night they're up there.
(no insertion of "pants" needed)

Spirited Away
If it is available in your area http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/sen/theaters.php
I highly recommend going to see it. I was fortunate to be able to see it subbed at the local Anime Club. I will in all likelihood also make the 45+ minute (depending on traffic) drive to watch it in theater. Can hardly wait for the DVD release.

Hey gang,

I just received my e-birthday card. And it is very cool.

I'd like to thank Noel, Christine and Tim and EVERYBODY who signed it. (All 57 of you!) You guys ROCK! You thank me for being so active in fandom, but there wouldn't be any fandom for me to be active in without all of you. I so appreciate all the support you've shown for the show and how you have taken me personally into your hearts.

One often hears horror stories about how fandoms tend to chew up and spit out the creators on various projects. But you guys have always been great to me, both collectively and individually. I count so many of you as my friends now. Thank you.

Shirt #10

White T. On top it says:

"It takes a lot to surprise
a New Yorker."

Under that is a pretty cool picture of Brooklyn, saying: "'Yo, taxi!'"

And beneath that it says,

"Prepare to be surprised..."

And beneath THAT, a logo:

"THE
GATHERING
of the GARGOYLES"

with "1997" in the first G in Gathering.

That's right, we're into Gathering t-shirts now.

This reminds me of the lightbulb contest. In that spirit:

Greg:

"I wouldn't want to tie down my pants and the pants of the artists in this respect."

"All pants are true."

And, of course: "I'm at my office and my pants are at home. Ask again later."

As for some real ones- hmm...

Elisa: What are those?
Goliath: My clothes have no names. But, you humans call them pants.

-Awakening III

Bodhe: The English rid their country of pants years ago (those wacky Brits).

-City of Stone IV

Arthur: I have neither my pants, nor my knights, not my old friend Merlin.

Avalon III (Someone else might have used that one)
