PHOENYX - Actually, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" *is* the first Narnia book. That is, it's the first one that C. S. Lewis wrote and published. The book that's the first in terms of internal chronology, "The Magician's Nephew", came out sixth. (I still think of the Chronicles of Narnia in terms of their original order, rather than in terms of the recent reshuffling to have them take place now in order of their events in Narnian history. At least "The Last Battle" comes at the end either way.)

It's an unsung rule that Disney has a 3-season rule for its Disney channel shows. After those three seasons are up, they become "rerun-carnated"--rerun to death.

But it's good to know that Gargoyles set a standard (3 seasons...tough crowd!)

I'm quite sure Disney doesn't just cancel shows on a whim. If "Kim Possible" was making enough money for Disney by whatever formulas they use to determine such things, production would continue. Many people mistakenly believe that the primary purpose of television programming is to entertain. It's not. The primary purpose of television programming - and children's television programming in particular - is to sell enough merchandise and commercial time to turn a tidy profit for the studio.

Why is the life expectancy of most animated programs particularly short? Blame it on the limited attention spans of the target demographic. "Kim Possible" has lasted about as long as most shows aimed toward children tend to do before being pushed aside to make way for the next Big New Thing (TM) that will keep kids in front of the TV long enough for the sponsors to sell them on action figures and sugary breakfast cereal.

97 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada!

Fop> I personally didn't care for it, but hey, everbody is different.

Narnia> Quicktime also has some fun little featurettes on it, so you might want to check that out. It does seem like this may be the best version of Narnia so far. Though I find myself wishing that they would have started with the first book, I can understand why they aren't. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe carries with it the notarity to launch the whole series into movie format. It should be fun.

American Dad? Is that one of those shows that airs ono that new fangled cable stuff? *sighs* I miss cable. Discovery channel, Animal planet, all of those fun channels.

Yes, WETA is doing the effects work for the Chronicles of Narnia project.
I would personally prefer WETA as the effects team for the live action Gargoyles movie. Unlike most other effects companies who rely solely on digital technology, WETA is one of the few companies who still employ old fashioned techniques (such as making real props and costumes, miniatures and bigatures) that are blended into the film with digital technology. I see WETA as where ILM should have been if they continued to work with Jim Henson studios.
To see some of the work they're doing on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, click on my name for a featurette (the Minotaur costume is amazing).

Yes, The Bronx is one of the "five consolidated burroughs of Greater New York City" (I think that's what it's officially called" (click the link to see a map) It is located north of Manhattan (which is shaped like an upsidedown club) The others are Stanten Island to the south, and to the east (on the southern tip of Long Island) Brooklyn and Queens.

I'd cast as many of the original cast as possible, where applicable, and do a "Vader" for the voice actors of the gargoyles. What I mean by this is that we have actors in animatronic gear do the lines and have the original voice cast voice over, like James Earl Jones did for the actor in the Vader costume. For major action sequences and things that require agile movement, CGI could be used for the gargs. This way we get the chemistry we had between the voice actors in the series and allow the original voice actors to participate. Plus, it would allow John Rhys-Davies to play MacBeth. However, some exceptions to having original cast members take part would likely have to be made, such as the Pack. I'd like to have them all do voice overs for actors, but I think there is so much voice talent a live-action film's producer will allow that the main cast would be all that would be allowed.

LIVE ACTION> I wouldn't hesitate to cast Jon Frakes in The Xanatos role (as I write this I treid to spell Xanatos with a "Z." Good grief!)

I'm pretty sure it's WETA Workshop doing The Chronicles of Narnia (a series of novels I never read past the first book for, The Magician's Nephew). They did all the effects and animatronics for The Lord of the Rings as well. Oh, and Peter Jackson's King Kong, I think. Yeahhh, I think they'd be pretty awesome. I would definitely be up for having the Gargoyles rendered in CG if they could make them all look as good as or better than Gollum.

The pitch Greg made to Disney for the live-action would be fine. Though wouldn't the plot be more than a little crowded with both Xanatos/Sevarius AND Demona/Macbeth? I'd keep it to Xanatos/Demona and definitely save Macbeth for later. I guess Sevarius could fit in easily as one of Xanatos' cronies doing some tests on Goliath (in the form of giving him a medical check-up even, before Goliath knows Xanatos' intentions).

If it was live-action, it definitely would be a re-imagining of the series and I wouldn't want it any other way. Continuing the cartoon's story in live-action seems like it'd be ill-fitting, goofy even. If they made a new TV series or direct-to-DVD movie completely done in CG, then I'd prefer it to be a direct continuation of the cartoon. I was able to accept that with Transformers/Beast Wars, it should be even easier with the better writing of Gargoyles.

So it'd be cool to see another side of what might've been. We'd get to know Othello. Lexington would get more play (much-deserved, IMO. Didn't it feel to anyone else that, after the first season, he was slightly neglected compared to the other two?).

The remaining Gargoyles' feelings of being alone would be that much more poignant. No elder to act as occasional advisor either (unless Goliath was given that role in addition to being leader).

The only problem I have with the Othello-dying thing is...at the end of the film you'd only have Lexington and Goliath left, since Demona would be evil. How do you build a sequel on that, unless you have them go out into the world early and find others? (may as well anyway. The whole protectors-of-castle-and-now-the-city thing wouldn't have as much resonance since the live-action Spider-Man got there first and did it pretty well, IMO) Then again, I guess you already have Elisa and more humans and/or mythological/historical figures and creatures could always be introduced. Sevarius could create the mutates too, for both new villains and new allies (yay, Claw!)

I am sure the cost and time would be huge, but I would much prefer the whole clan. I really can't choose one gargoyle off. Bronx was the least needed in Awakenings, but I still loved the addition of him. It would be sad to see him cut. And Brooklyn and Broadway have different personalities from Lex that you get to see so many different perspectives of life in modern NY. And I love Hudson. It would be sad to see him gone too :(

I'd still accept a live action Gargoyles with some characters cut, but there would be that ounce of disappointment in the back of my mind.

So who do you guys think should create the gargoyles?
For costume and anamatronics, ILM and Stan Winston are some of the best in the world. Whoever did Underworld's werewolves might be good too.
Also the group who are making the Chronicles of Narnia look excellent. Anyone see that preview yet? Aslan, the centaurs, etc. They did a great job :)

SIREN - Yes, what you heard sounds like Greg's own ideas for the live-action movie version of "Gargoyles" (which Disney rejected), which he has up on "Ask Greg" in the Rambles section. To briefly sum it up:

Macbeth was to be in charge of Castle Wyvern, with Princess Katharine as his daughter.

Only three gargoyles would be awakened in the modern world (if you don't count Demona): Goliath, Lexington, and "Othello". "Othello" would apparently have gotten killed (smashed in his stone sleep, most likely) in such a way as to leave room for a sequel involving Coldstone. (Also, Lex's full name would have been Alexander rather than Lexington - which is interesting in light of his friendship with Alex in the animated series.) Xanatos and Sevarius would also conduct a few tests on Goliath in a way that would leave room for a sequel featuring Thailog. And, of course, Goliath and Elisa would meet and become friends (with room for more than that later on down the road) - one element that you obviously can't leave out of a movie adaptation.

I don't think that they should do a live-action movie. I think that it was animated before and it should still be animated. But if they did restart the series via a movie, I wouldn't like a Spider-Man-ish approach, but it would be better than nothing.

But you know what they say about CG:
Once you go CG, you can't go back.

I heard one storyline that I wasn't sure if it was Greg's or just a fan's idea. But it had Macbeth as the king of Castle Wyvern and Princess Catherine was his daughter or neice. The whole stone sleep spell went as it does in the show. And Demona and Macbeth are joined in a spell as well at a later time. So it was taking the two biggest and most important storylines in the show, Awakenings and City of Stone and wrapping it up into one movie.

I do believe it wouldn't hurt the movie to change the original storyline somewhat. But keep is true to the series. For a time it was only going to be Goliath who came to NY, but then why call it "Gargoyles"? And I'd HATE to see the rest of the clan get cut.

Siren

Vertigo1> I think any film based on Gargoyles would most likely be a new storyline, one which involved the characters of the series but is not a part of that saga, a retelling, if you will. I think the fact that Gargoyles is a saga and not a "series" makes it difficult to make a story suitable for a full length feature. Events in Gargoyles episodes would inevitably have influence on a future episode events, hence the "Previously, on Gargoyles" scenes that explain how one event in a previous episode(s) will effect this one.

As for a new project ever starting up, I think it would have to start from scratch much like the Ultimate Marvel Comics series have, a fresh start in the current or near future, familiar yet new take on similar adventures. A full-length movie, animated or live-action regardless, would likely have to be based on "Awakening". Rather than a lengthy prologue like in the series, I think brief flashbacks throughout the film would suffice to keep the audience from being bored (I know we Garg fans wouldn't, but we have to keep the newbies in mind, too). For a first movie, I think Demona and Xanatos (with the Steel Clan) would make appropriate first villains, ending the movie with them fighting crime from the clocktower.

Future movies (in the Spider-Man movie mold) could probably focus on a different villain. a second movie would probably center on the Pack (all human at first, but are busted for doing something dangerous that the Gargs prevent from threatening innocents, and as a result become the "Ultra-Pack" (I'm referring to cyber/genetic enhancement, not the future Pack described in "Futuretense") to seek revenge. Coldstone could be added in this film as a kind of anti-hero.

Future films could progress on the more action packed aspects of the series, a third film could probably focus on a merging of "City of Stone" and "Hunter's Moon" since they are somewhat interelated.

(I did hear there was some claim made about people being able to keep outta the HY but it was a secondhand group quote in the media, so who knows? )

Depends on the type of film we're talking about. Are we talking about the live action one in development all these years? One of those direct-to-video sequels Disney is so keen on? Or, best case scenario, a theatrical quality visual marvel with the top-notch writing of the series.

Ckayote> why not have Brooklyn and Katana have a 'Twilight Zone' Episode where they briefly end up in "our world" due to some freak event as they leave for their next destination? This kind of episode was done before in another Disney Series, "Darkwing Duck", when DW and the villain Megavolt somehow ended up in "our world" and saw themselves being marketed as the series they were.

Although, I would like to see Brooklyn and Katana not realize this at first, like Brooklyn picks up a paper in the trash (a la Back to the Future) and sees that it's a date that he's familiar with, but when he tries to follow up, for example trying to locate Elisa at the 23rd Precinct, finding that no one knows her. Later he notices other things, like the lack of the Eyrie building, no references to Xanatos, or anything he would have experienced in the Gargoyles series. Then, he runs into some kid who identifies him and shows him the truth. I'm thinking the innocent kid who is a real fan of Gargoyles and has the room covered in merchandise (this is probably taking place in 1995-96 I would think, when Gargoyles was still on the air). I think the kicker would have the kid play a tape of one of the episodes in the 2nd season with Goliath's Monologue.

Eventually, Brooklyn and Katana would intervene on a crime that would involve the kid somehow, and the Gate would send them back to their reality with the knowledge of infinite possibilities and other brainburning concepts.

The idea is Brooklyn and Katana have a digital camera full of photoes from their timedances. Originally it was going to be pictures of them with famous people/at famous places, but I started coming up some, and I decided it was more interesting to have them posing AS famous people or in situations representative of their personalities.

Here's some of the ones I have; Can anybody come up with anymore?

Brooklyn as an '80s punk rocker
Brooklyn as Mohammed Ali
Nash as Napoleon
Katana riding Godzilla, devastating Tokyo
Wierd Sisters dealing Poker: Brooklyn is looking at his awlful hand, Katana is stealing his chips, and Nash is sneaking in a 5th Ace.
Katana as Kurt Cobain
Katana as women's baseball player from A League of their own
Brooklyn as an Apollo astronaut
Nash as Gordan Gekko
Katana as William Wallace
Brooklyn as Fonzie with Katana in a poodle skirt looking miserable, and Nash laughing at her
Nash as Bobbie Fisher
Katana as Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible
Katana as a Sultan and Brooklyn as her Harem Girl
Brooklyn in German WW1 military garb
Brooklyn in 1920s suit and Katana as a flapper dancing the jitterbug?, with Nash as the blind jazz musician
