Greg> you will like them. They're really nice. This is my first gathering im looking forward to it. Looking forward to meeting you too.
Shara Mordinae - [jeanie54_2000@yahoo.com]

They had a book that had some sketches in it. My camera only got the one sketch sorry about that. They'll have it at the gathering. I'd just rather not anger them since ill be sharing the dealers room with them. ;-)
Shara Mordinae - [jeanie54_2000@yahoo.com]

Shara> Wait? Didn't you say a week ago that you saw a book of comic art? Yes, I believe you did...

"Saw a book of the comic art for the new gargoyles comic Which I will post later for everyone once I download the images off my camera. The art looks just like the cartoon."

Now you're saying it's just a sketch? I'm sorry, but which is it?

And yes, I will be going to the Gathering. This year will be my seventh time attending. I am looking forward to meeting the Slave Labor crew.

Greg Bishansky> I got in a lot of trouble at comic con for taking a picture of the pokemon car. I guess alot of the dealers can get picky about what you take pics of. See my link. Illegal car picture . almost lost my camera to get that one.

I'd just rather not post the sketch up in here unless I asked them first since I did take the photo without thier permission when I was asking them questions. But your going to the gathering right. Just stop by there booth they are a nice bunch of people. Then stop by ours and pick up a free tshirt ;-)

Shara Mordinae - [jeanie54_2000@yahoo.com]

Sorry got so much stuff trying to get ready for gathering have not had time to upload any more of my comic con pics. Lots of gathering prep and making sure all display stuff for our site gets there ok. hope you understand.

I only had two pics. Got the display one that you all have seen. then I got one other pic from a sketch book slave labor had at there booth in the dealers room. Its A pencil drawing of sorts. I was going to post it but i dont think they would aprechiate me doing so. since its unfinished art. I'm sure they will have the same stuff at the gathering :) They are a really fun buch of people to talk to.

Shara Mordinae - [jeanie54_2000@yahoo.com]

Lord GargFan> Yeah, I'm wondering about Shara's pics of these mysterious Gargoyles comic art book pics myself. Especially since that Goliath/Elisa pic is the only new art done, and Greg Weisman himself hasn't seen any new art besides the Goliath/Elisa.

Let's just hope that Kathy's surprise doesn't turn out to be a special visit from a "Gargoyles" voice actor - and it turns out to be Claw's voice actor. :)
Todd

Shara>How's it going on those ComiCon pics?

I like Bishansky's signature :P

I'll post on Wednesday before I leave for the airport. I should be able to post on Thursday from CrzyDemona's before we leave for Las Vegas. For the zero hour on Friday, the room might be on it's own. Although Kathy was promising a surprise for the people not attending... so maybe someone from con staff will be stopping in that morning to say how many minutes are left until the convention kicks off. ;)

Thanks for the shopping info dudes - contrary to belief, guys aren't that hopeless! ;)

Todd> The music is an instrumental version of "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean".
Whitbourne

Watched my tape of "Protection" this afternoon. A few thoughts on it.

This time around, I noticed something new: the music that's playing while Elisa and Dracon are dining is the same music that played during the opening scene in "Eye of the Beholder", when Xanatos and Fox were having dinner. (I wonder if it was "real" classical music or something composed by the Gargoyles production team.)

Parts of "Protection" that still stand out to me include Goliath's disgust at how Dracon and his fellow mobsters use the word "protection", and Dracon and his gang's response to the gargoyles turning up - initial panic, then disbelief as first Elisa starts bossing Goliath and Broadway around in front of them, and then the gargs claim that they want to team up. I particularly get a kick out of the bit where Dracon's patting Goliath on the wing until Goliath starts to growl at him, and Pal Joey's panicked response when he's told to accompany the gargoyles to the dry cleaners.

This episode introduces the infamous jalapenas - oddly enough, Broadway says "Jalapena" on his way to the dry cleaners, before Goliath's encounter with one of those peppers provides a logical means of the gargoyles turning it into a pseudo-curse.

A touch that I very much like (reminiscent of Goliath's pronunciation of "detective" in Season One) is how Goliath says "dry cleaners" to Broadway.

And we get to see a little more of Mr. Jaffe and Matt's interaction (first introduced in "Re-Awakening").

Something that I found myself wondering while I was watching the episode and thinking about the recurring minor characters (such as Mr. Jaffe, Officer Morgan, Travis Marshall, etc.). We know that one of the reasons why they were in the animated series was to make things easier for the animators, who wouldn't keep on having to come up with new designs all the time. With "Gargoyles" coming back as a comic book, however, I hope that the change of medium won't bring about the loss of that aspect of the familiar "background figures"; I don't know if it's easier for comic book artists to make regular use of new character designs or not (I do remember Bishansky saying that they can afford to have their characters wearing different outfits more often than television animators can), but I hope that the comic book will preserve that aspect of "Gargoyles". Then again, we also know that Greg Weisman genuinely liked that aspect beyond the simple "makes life easier for the animators" because of his fondness for the "universe of characters" concept (citing inspirations for it from both "The Simpsons" and Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County), so I suspect that we'll see it kept in.

Hi everyone. Awww, have a great time at the Gathering to everyone that's going! Hope you have a great time! The chat room's been a bit quiet lately! - Though it's probably due to logging on from different time zone areas.

I watched my video of "Awakening Part 1" yesterday for the first time in ages. It never looses it's charm. Though, unfortunatley some scenes and conversations have not been included in the video that were in the television series :( .

Anyway, I'm gonna go relax, while I can so I'll check ya laters!

Gathering attendees!

I'm looking for volunteers to help out the "con virgins"!

Don't mind answering questions? Like giving a helping hand? Want a spiffy button to show off?

Then please reply in Livejournal (the website link) or e-mail me, and at the convention you too can help a con virgin!

I'll be handing out Con Virgin Support buttons at the panel of the same name, and any other convenient time during the con to those who want to join. All you need to do is get word to me, wear the button (when you're willing to help out), and be nice to anyone who asks you questions.

I've found that there are always times when no matter how well prepared, no matter how many questions you thought to ask, something comes up that makes you want to go ask another con-goer for a bit of advice. It doesn't have to be staff. It doesn't have to be anyone in particular. It just has to be someone who doesn't mind potentially dumb questions - which usually turn out not to be too dumb after all! If you don't mind being a person who can be asked all those questions, please contact me. No cost, no requirements, just please wear the button I will give you at the con - one hour, one day, all the time, however long you want - and answer questions, give directions, and generally be a little helpful if asked. You don't have to move forward unless you want to. Take a little bit of All Those Questions off the staff, lend an easy hand, and maybe make some new friends.

And you get a button. ^_^

Watched my tape of "Upgrade" today. Some comments on it.

This is probably one of the more disturbing episodes, in light of the Pack's transformation. I still recall, the first time that I saw it, wanting to believe for a while that Jackal and Hyena were simply wearing fancy armor, but at last I had to accept the fact that they were cyborgs. And as for Wolf - the loss of his humanity was too obvious for me to even go into denial about.

Dingo becomes a definitely interesting figure for the first time in his disgust over how low the Pack has sunk, first in robbing banks, then in getting warped into monstrosities just so that Jackal, Hyena, and Wolf can settle their feud with the gargoyles.

Wolf's cry of "This isn't over!" is of interest, since Hakon shouted the same thing as he was retreating from Castle Wyvern back in "Awakening Part One". I can't help but suspect that that was a foreshadowing of "Vendettas".

This time around, the scene where Coyote's flying head knocks on the door to the Pack's hovercraft while it's in flight reminds me of a one-panel comic strip that I'd once read, some years ago. Two men are standing on a door in the middle of the sea, using it as a raft. Suddenly, they hear knocking on the door; one of them cries to the other, "Whatever you do, don't open it!"

Bronx behaves a little more like a conventional cartoon mascot than usual when, after hearing the trio argue over how many crimes they've committed, he puts his paws over his ears with a groan.

Goliath shows his respect for Hudson again by considering him for second-in-command, before Hudson has to explain to him that they can't go back.

The Pack's fight scenes struck me as pretty violent, particularly the scene where Goliath's squeezing Coyote's head hard. Jackal loses a cybernetic arm twice (once when Bronx grabs hold of it, once in fighting Brooklyn). And Hyena's definitely creepy in "spider" form.

While "Upgrade" isn't one of the stronger episodes, it's certainly of interest in the look that we get at Xanatos at the end - where he considers being beaten by Fox as something to be happy about, because it means that she's a true equal to him.

Jurgan>I don't think Xanatos really conceived of things backfiring they way they did (though I'm sure he planned for a worst-case scenario. Wouldn't be Xanatos if he didn't). I don't think he'd ever had his machinations *fail* like that before.
But with the mutates I'm pretty sure Severius is the one who selected Maggie, Fang, and Claw. And I'm sure he was looking for human guinea pigs not dirty-tricks squad material.
Thailog though, that was definately a lapse of judgement on Xanatos' part.

Jurgan> yes yes the comic is a go, When I talked to the slave labor guys at comic con they said it would be out about the time the haunted mansion stuff comes out so probally october or near december.
Shara Mordinae - [jeanie54_2000@yahoo.com]

So, I'm still a little bit confused: Is the comic officially confirmed? Some people have talked as though it's a given, while some still call it "prospective," "potential," or other uncertain words, and I don't think I've yet seen a confirmation in any statement Greg's made. So, what's the official word? Can I stop holding my breath?

One thing that I wonder about Xanatos's repeated attempts to create pseudo-gargoyles is: is he making it much too complicated by trying to dupe people into serving him? With Goliath and the clan, he was just curious and had to see if they were real, and he had no idea what Goliath's character was like. With Thailog, it might have been better if he'd gone with a simpler program, like the later clone clan had ("Obey Thailog"). However, I have trouble seeing why he felt the need to dupe Derek, Maggie, Claw, and Fang. Fang, at least, seemed perfectly happy to be a mutate. Why not, rather than go through this monstrously complicated plan to frame Goliath for transforming him, which ultimately fell apart in "The Cage", simply find a group of people who'd be happy with the power of a mutate and would be willing to perform criminal deeds for their master? The Pack certainly prove that there are people who would agree to that, particularly Wolf, who is technically a mutate. The only thing I can think of is to fall back on the Dungeons & Dragons reasoning for not playing evil characters: A party of evil characters will be more interested in backstabbing each other than fighting their enemies. Maybe Xanatos was afraid that having a whole gang of criminal-minded mutates so close at hand (The Pack was never anywhere near Xanatos himself- did they ever even find out that Xanatos was the one who brought them all together?) would be too dangerous in case they decided they wanted more than what they were being offered. On the other hand, he may have felt Derek would be loyal as long as he thought Xanatos could be trusted. Still, it seems like a lot of weight to rest on such a complicated deception in which so many things could go wrong (and ultimately did). What does anyone else think?

Well, after days of being given the run around by Priceline, I've found that it would cost me $175 to push my flight departure from Vegas to Monday evening, plus another $50 to stay at the hotel another night. I wish I could say it was worth it, but it isn't for one more night. So, I'm going to be at the Gathering one day late, and leave a day early :(. guess I'll get my dates right the next time...

"As with all things, darkness falls for thee..."

Watched my tape of "Double Jeopardy" today. Again, not a whole lot to say about it this time (I'm definitely going to need some new material soon to comment on properly; thank goodness for the upcoming comic), but a few little bits.

One thing that we learn from it (which is of note if you pay that much attention to all the episodes) is that we now know that Xanatos and Sevarius were lying back in "Metamorphosis" about having been unable to clone any of the gargoyles.

I've mentioned this before, but I find it interesting that after this episode, Xanatos never embarked on any brand-new "create your own gargoyles" schemes. He still made use of the Steel Clan, and even briefly employed the Mutates in "The Cage", but those were the leftovers from past stabs. In light of how Thailog turned out, of course, who can blame him? "Substitute gargoyles" that have a tendency to fly into walls and break apart into scrap metal are one thing, but a gargoyle that double-crosses you, steals your money, and tries to murder you is another entirely.

Sevarius still has his over-the-top tendency (the scene where he's yelling, "Yes, you robbed me of my greatest creation! I only took back what was mine!" and then whispers to Xanatos, "There, how was that?" is possibly my favorite Sevarius moment), naturally. But he also helps out considerably when he comes up with the idea of using the magnetic disk to adrenalize Goliath, allowing the guy to break his chains.

Perhaps one of the most memorable Thailog lines in the episode: "Now I know where I got the temper", after hearing Goliath roar.

Again, best wishes to our resident Brits.

So, if everyone thought Greg was evasive before, now with the comic coming out, he's going to be even more evasive. In light of, I thought I would present this to discuss.

Is there anything that in hindsight you wish Greg didn't reveal?

For me, I kinda wish we didn't know about Queen Mab or Oberon being Merlin's dad. I always thought those revelations were kinda shot out, and ironically no one asked when Greg did reveal those. Oberon/Merlin is kinda moot at this point since we're getting "Gargoyles" and not "Pendragon", but Mab would have been a surprise, I'm sure.

I'm glad he kept the Ultra Pack mostly a mystery. Yeah, we know that Coyote will be leading them, and there will be a new member. But we don't know who the new member is, nor do we know the nature of their new upgrades, which leads me to think it's a much bigger deal than just new weapons and crap being added to them.

That's just to start with though.

Wingless - There may have been some confusion. That picture I took is not of the Gargoyles comic cover. It's just a picture that was whipped up so they would have SOMETHING to show off. It's the only thing we've seen so far and the first issue is far from needing a cover.

Sorry about the mix up... but once again, that's just some random preliminary art.

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Um, Physcho, I really think that you should do some spell-checking on that post of yours. It's barely legible at present.

I'm sorry to hear about James Doohan's passing.

Watched my tape of "Revelations" today. I always found it a pity that they didn't continue Matt's investigation of the Illuminati past that point; I really wanted to see, in particular, what he'd do next after learning that Hacker had been one of them all along. At least it'll probably be dealt with in the comic - if the comic lasts long enough (let's hope that it does).

As I've mentioned before, I've sometimes wondered whether those rejuvenation drugs of the Illuminati's have anything to do with the Holy Grail (in light of Duval's true identity). Of course, the one snag in that theory is that the Grail would hardly be likely to bestow its gifts upon folks like Mace, though perhaps if Duval's found a way to distance the drugs enough from the Grail to be removed from its moral component, but not its healing component....

Mace's hotel key is No. 23, a number often associated with Illuminati-style conspiracy theories.

I wonder how the Illuminati keep organized crime in check, now that Mace Malone is gone and can't serve as an advisor any longer. Of course, Mace joined them seventy years earlier, and things have probably changed enough that the Illuminati could have developed (and might even have needed to develop) new ways of controlling the syndicates.

The first time that I saw the episode, I thought at first that Matt really had betrayed Goliath to the Illuminati, and was relieved when it turned out that he hadn't. The episode is a biggy, not only in how it advances Matt's story, but also in that we find out why Elisa wasn't telling anyone else about the gargoyles, but was keeping them as her secret.

Hello, nice people. I am not new in the world of gargoyles :D, but i just discovered how fun can be writte in a comment room :D!!. I read a fanfinc the other day and it always get to my nerves that people say "demona is the evil reincarnated" " she deserves to die" blablabla... and bla. It is not like i am taking it as something personal,ya know, she is not my favourite character but,as a phsicology student, i would like to remark that we are talking here about a sick creature. YES, i am so crazy myself that i spend my time analyzing a character of a cartoon but hey, she deserves compation as much as she deserves a good blow on her face.
First than all, she suffers a serious psychosis, she does really belive that humans have the fault for all the misery that had fallen on her. Deeph insade, into her subconsience she know what she have done, but her consience isist that she is a victim, THAT, my friends, means how, in a desperate try to stop feeling gulty and overcame the totally insanaty, the subject DENY the reality that her own been cosider as real. Also, apart of that, can we really blame a creature a thousand years old a creature that have seen the more terrible thinks that humans are able to do across 10 long centuries, witness of infinitive mercyless acts of humans aganst humans humans aganst the other creatures that share all world aganst her own people ( because at last humans reaaly killed her people, does not matter if she had something to do with it) There are good humans as well, yeah, not many, but yeah. But, the bud guys have the power. The bud guys are hte powerfull ones. The love can save a soul, but the hate can kill the body that keeps that soul. Is not that our race have vanished incontables species into nathing but memories just to prevent them from killing humans? Considering them as dangerous?.Yeah!! We had done it, we did it , we are doing it and we will alway do it. And perhaps no one say that is for cruelty or evilness, it is just to survive. Why anyone should judge other creature to try the same thing to her own kind. To survive.Vengenace is the justice of the most powerless. That is all...thanks for reading.:)

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Watched my tape of "Outfoxed" this afternoon. Seeing this reminds me again of how great the voice actors were - I was especially impressed with Robert Culp as Renard, introduced here. (Though I understand, and agree with, Bishansky's explanation about why a "Gargoyles" revival in a medium involving voice actors isn't feasible at present.)

I like this one for many other reasons. We get to see more of Fox's characterization here and how she's just as cunning as her husband (she even gets the one-up over him in the "phone call from her doctor" scene - "Didn't I mention it? Must have slipped my mind" in such a casual way). Not to mention that we find out about Renard being her father - and the strong hint at the end that the real reason why Fox was doing it wasn't so much out of any interest in Cyberbiotics itself as that she simply enjoys all the scheming. The cheery way in which she greets him at the end definitely confirms that.

Another favorite part of mine is Goliath's comments about machines and people; machines can only do what they are programmed to do, while people have the capacity to make choices, particularly moral choices. (This, incidentally, is why I've never been able to buy the "evil robot/computer" idea in sci-fi. Now, a robot or computer that does bad things because it's been programmed by the antagonist to do so, that's another matter.)

And, of course, we get the whole business of Goliath taking responsibility for his actions aboard the original Fortress, fitting in with one of the main themes of "Gargoyles". Pity that Demona and Jon Canmore/Castaway never learned what Goliath was reminded of here.

One side-note: Goliath correctly suspects that Fortress II will be attacked, but thinks that Xanatos is going to be the saboteur. It turns out to be Fox instead. Kind of like Goliath initially thinking that Xanatos is behind the theft of the Scrolls of Merlin, when it's really Macbeth. He almost seems ready to blame Mr. X for everything - though hopefully he's learned by now that there are plenty of other antagonists around as ready to participate in the scheming as Xanatos himself.

And, of course, we get the introduction of Preston Vogel, probably the biggest practical joke that "Gargoyles" ever pulled on its audience. Well, "practical joke" may not be the right word for it. "Deliberate misleading" might be better.

Of course, this is one episode that they could never make today; the S&P would never allow any aircraft to even appear in danger of crashing into a skyscraper nowadays. One more reason why "Gargoyles" will have to be continued as a comic book.

Todd> The first time I watched 'High Noon' was with my best friend a few years ago. I instantly, thought it was Demona when I saw that rookie cop, however my friend refused to believe me, until Macbeth said "Demona". Ha Ha.

I enjoyed that episode, though Coldstone gets on my nerves a bit.

Yeah, I'll miss the voice actors too. But honestly, comic books became my ideal for any kind of revival mostly based on how fucked up the industry is these days. The show would be castrated on television right now. Maybe things will loosen up in a few years, maybe not.

Ideally, Gargoyles on Toonami as shows like Justice League can do very well. But, that network is owned by the competition and thus will never happen.

So, my only other hope is a Direct-to-DVD feature some time. Probably won't happen, but some time.

Still, I am very enthused about the comics. I can't wait for the first issue. I can't wait for the first graphic novel.

Watched my tape of "High Noon" today. A good episode, but the tape itself has an inconsistent picture that is good part of the time, then loses its color at other times. One more reason for me to buy the DVD when it comes out. (Though I don't know as yet how far into Season Two it'll go.)

I like the touch where the moon in the "mini-universe" inside Coldstone suddenly develops that little mechanical look, before we move into the outside world where Lex is working on fixing Coldstone.

Another touch that I liked was Hudson and Broadway looking over the newspaper together, as part of their learning how to read. (For that matter, we get an even stronger link to "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" when they confront Macbeth in the library.)

This is the first time that we see Demona making use of her human form since "The Mirror". I know that I didn't even realize that that "rookie cop" was her until Macbeth addressed her as "Demona". And then we see her transform back and forth, and learn that it isn't much fun for her (or Macbeth, if he's close enough).

Officer Morgan gets one of his biggest scenes in the series, during his conversation with Elisa - and doesn't even realize it. Elisa does, though.

Something that I suddenly wondered was whether that taxi driver ever got paid for driving Demona to Belvedere Castle, given that she couldn't have been carrying any money on her at the time. Did Macbeth pay the fare when the cab got there, or was it a case of Demona grabbing the poor guy by the throat and saying, "Your payment is that you get to leave in one piece."?

Of course, the episode is best-known for Demona and Elisa's big fight - complete with Iago in Coldstone's body saying, with a leering grin, "Well, this is diverting". (With, of course, the big nit of Macbeth being seemingly unaffected by whatever happens to Demona in the fight.)

Coldstone displays some definite manners in calling "Elisa" "milady" and giving her a little courtly bow.

And we discover at the end what the Weird Sisters were up to, and hear them talking about the "coming battle". I know that I was surprised that it came along so soon afterwards (just seven to nine episodes later); the first time that I saw this episode, I thought that the "coming battle" would be at the very end of the season, though I don't know why I thought that.

Not much to say about "High Noon" this time, I'm afraid. (Maybe I'm running out of fresh comments.)

A thought about the comic: while, in some ways, this is likely to be a better way of continuing the series now than getting it back on television (in light of tighter S&P today than ten years ago and the absence of a "Disney Afternoon" in syndication to schedule it on), it'll be different in one way; no voice actors. Which means that the stories could wind up differently in places from how they might have been if Greg had gotten to do the whole of the third season on television. The voice actors and even the work relating to recording them wound up, by their very performances, originating many ideas, such as the Archmage's return in "Avalon" (thanks to David Warner breathing some real menace into a one-dimensional evil wizard) or the introduction of Thailog (which came about after Greg Weisman heard Goliath's name backwards while playing one of the episode sound recordings in reverse, which got him imagining what this "Thailog" might be like). But I doubt that there's anything that we can do about that; it's certainly much better than nothing. And comic books are more durable, at least, than television programs.

Greg Bishanksy mentioned a place called Midtown Comics that ships worldwide. I know there's some fans Down Under who are worried about being able to buy the comic, too. Greg, maybe you could post a link for us?

Only thing about that comic cover - Goliath has holes in his left wing! *is sad* DOn't like to see Gargs get hurt. Yes, I know for them it's like breathing the air for them and they heal the next day, but still. Tis just the way I am. A Garg protector at heart.

BTW, that's not to say I object to the cover at all, not at all, it looks wonderful. Don't change a line!

As for getting the comic, I'm hoping that we'll be able to somehow subscribe, since I doubt anyone in In this neck of the woods will carry them.

1 Y 9 MO 4D later and my question to "Ask Greg" is finally aswered! (I knew I hung around here for some reason... not just because of you lovable guy and Gals!)

I went to Shakespeare in the Park last night at Hawrelack Park here in Edmonton. I saw the Free Will Players' performance of Romeo and Juliet. Man, What A great show!!! (I also saw Love's Labour's Lost on Thursday; also a great show.)

In Romeo, they used Shakespeares words with Gangs ala West Side story and costumes ala Romeo+Juliet.

I have now seen nine of Willy's palys, and I can't wait for next year.

If you're ever in the Edmonton area in Late june/july, you should check it out. Next Year, I belive, they are doing Macbeth and another. Can't wait for Mscbeth, though.

Shara--Where is that werewolf prop from? Is it a part of a movie, or something being sold?

I really like the Alice In Wonderland art. Heh, I always wondered who "Mary Anne" was too. Was the name a part of Lewis Carrol's original work? When I was watching the Disney flick with my little cousin not too long ago, I figured she was the White Rabbit's maid, since the way he's yelling for her seems to imply the kind of regard an irritable servant of the Queen might have for his hired help.

Regarding Greg Weisman's recent comments about the next DVD sets...Do we know if Disney is expecting much higher sales for Season 2 than Season 1 had? 'Cause in theory, if everyone here (and elsewhere--basically all the fans of Gargoyles who bought the first DVD set) buys exactly the same amount of copies they bought last December, won't it have done just as well in their eyes and guarantee us the rest of the Season 2? As long as their expectations aren't unreasonable, I think we'll make it to the end. Season 2's release, and the press it's given, should help sell more copies of Season 1 as well.
