I just am so curious as to what exactly he was doing in that time period! Hmm... maybe someday Greg will reveal all the secrets...online or in the comics :)
faytefire - [dragondreamer@comcast.net]

Greg Weisman mentioned at "Ask Greg" once (the first version) that Macbeth fought on the Allied side in World War II. I wonder if he was in Great Britain during the 1940 portion of "M.I.A." - but I doubt that Greg's going to reveal that one easily.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

faytefire: I actually addressed Macbeth and WWII in my story for the Grimorum Anthology this year. I won't spoiler the story, but I will say, in my mind, Macbeth will always have a certain degree of loyalty to his homeland. I could never see him actively taking up arms against Scotland.

Alright, I hate having to do this- but I have an upcoming trip to visit my family in NY at the end of this month and I really need the cash, like... yesterday. I am teh broke and am saving up for plane tickets... and so

I am taking commissions! Full-colored, backgrounded images for $10, prints availible on high gloss photo paper for $25 that will be mailed to you.

I am profficient at fan art for

Gargoyles

Slayers

Any other show I'll be happy to learn. The important thing is to do this now.

Adult art, original characters, fanfic based art- you name it. Respond at my email addy, or at my livejournal, username angelcarnivore.

My email is angelcarnivore@gmail.com

Thanks in advance, and sorry, won't spam this room again.

Sorry for double posting. Something weird (well, I think it's weird, my BF thinks it's just coincidence) kinda happened on the way to work last night.

There was a car on the road with Maryland plates (which is where our new friend Jeb lives, whom we met at this year's con and probably will at next year's as well) and there was another car with Tennesee (where, as everyone knows, next year's con is gonna be) plates also. Kinda weirded me out when I stopped to think about it.

Y2Hecate> Thanks for the info. My 1st con and all, I had just sudden;y started wondering out of the blue whether I'd only paid for a day or so. Thanks for clearing that up.

I will check out the G2007 site when I get a chance. I need to get some sleep right now. I worked 3 hours overtime and probably will again tonight. Urgh.

BJ: I don't mean to sound inhospitable, but let me give you some advice that has served me well: "Punctuation is your friend. Punctuation will not bite you and throw you in the basement."

General comments: It's funny, but not one hour after I posted earlier today, I received my order from mycomicshop.com in the mail. Which was odd, since they never e-mailed me telling me they were shipping it. Whatever, I got it. Honestly, the shading in some panels bothered me more than Hedgecock's pencils. For most of the Quarrymen rally, I felt that Castaway's face was too bright compared to the surroundings. And in the panel where he smashes the statue, if I hadn't seen "The Journey" on TV, I would have had a hard time guessing what he was doing. Room for improvement, but that's what the first few issues are for: flexing the muscles. I did enjoy the new scenes, though, which someone told me were actually written for the Goliath Chronicles episode ten years ago, but were cut. I guess Art shooting at Goliath might have been a bit much for the Saturday morning crowd. It was good to see those included here.

I'm new to the comment room. My name is Yami and I'm Jurgan's girlfriend. This was my first time ever attending the Gathering, and I loved it! Jurgan and I registered for next year's, too. I will be typing up and submitting my journal soon. Well, see you all later!

Hi everyone! Hi bj, I'm new here too.
Faytefire> I think that Macbeth fought during WWII. Hmmmm...I also think that he may have not thought about Demona much during that time. I mean WWII was a REALLY BIG deal. It's cool to think that he fought in it; he's a great warrior and he's immortal. That's a pretty good combination! Oh yeah, and he's got the whole honor thing going on too (which doesn't hurt). What does anyone else think?

Hi everyone, hope the weekend is going well so far, mine has been writing a paper for an online course..icky!
but to start a conversation.. which Im not sure if its been done before, but what do you guys think Macbeth was doing during WWII? I was chatting with a friend of mine, and the topic came up. I wonder if during that time he would have put his hunt for Demona on the backburner, and helped in the war.. but what side? We dont know very much about this character, only his undying hatred for Demona, he grows tired of living (but find new hope when Goliath tells him there are things worth living for) and he has a deep sense of honor. It would be interesting to see what he did during that time, and his opinions.
What do you all think?

I just got back from my neighbor's yard sale. I happened to be wearing the WWDD T-Shirt I had made, and he asked me what it was. I told him and he said "oh yeah, I remember Gargoyles. I used to love that show." I told him it was out on DVD. His budget is a little tight right now, but hopefully, he'll tell others.

Demonskrye: Even though Thailog was mentally indoctrinated with Xanatos's slant on the world, he still takes some things to levels that I don't think even Xanatos would go to.

Todd: I'm still gritting my teeth for when the questions I asked way back in my n00bier days come up. *sigh*

I haven't even started writing my con journal yet ... at my brother's house, surrounded by Becca's Chaotic Noisy little cousins. It will have to wait until I get home. Just hope by then I can REMEMBER everything!!! Eek!

If I register for the 2008 con, I'll remember to ask.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582@hotmail.com]

A word to the wise: When I stopped by my local comic retailer after the Gathering to see if he'd received his shipment of Gargoyles comics, I brought one of the posters that the SLG guys were handing out at the con. I showed it to him and asked him if he'd received one from the comic distributor he deals with. His eyes widened at the sight of it, and he answered that he had not. I gave that one to him on the spot and made him promise to display it (he readily agreed).

So, everyone, if you go to your local comic retailer and don't see any posters advertising the Gargs comic on display -- and you don't have an extra poster to give the retailer yourself -- let your retailer know that the posters are in fact available from SLG, and encourage him/her to get one.

(As for my retailer, he explained that he didn't have my copies yet because his distributor shorted him on his initial order. He had to order more copies -- more than he was originally planning for his secondary order, in fact, since enough people besides me had been asking for the comic that he decided he needed to increase his order. :) )

The pre-registration for Gathering 2007 was for the whole con. Day passes are only ever sold at the door unless the con staff wants to create a lot more work for themselves.

I was watching Long Way To Morning this evening and really paid attention to the artwork and carvings in the Archmage's cave. Is it just me or does the artwork look distinctly South American or Native American. It doesn't look like traditional Celtic or Scottish work. Especially the large face carvings. Anyone know of the reason for the designs that way? Or is there some ancient Scottish artwork that does resemble that style?

Tood Jensen> Crud. Oh, well, I'll figure something out.

Sorry for going off-topic AGAIN, butm y bf and I registered for G2007 for $20 apiece. I just wanted to verify to myself; that's more then one day membership at next year's con, right? That's the current pre-registration for the WHOLE CON. I'm only asking cause I'm wondering and it's bugging me.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582@hotmail.com]

KING COBRA - Sorry, but since I've never registered at Toon Zone myself, I have no idea as to how to do it.

Thailog> Of course, the big misconception is that Thailog has any of Xanatos's DNA. Thailog is, in fact, the poster child for the "nurture" side of "nature vs. nurture". Despite his genetic makeup being the same as Goliath, his personality is must more reflective of the "World Accordig to Xanatos" schooling he was given during his growth process. Though he does seem to inherrit some of his taste in women from Goliath, that's about as far as the mental similarities.
Demonskrye

Jurgan> There is also another time in "Sactuary" where we see Thailog awaken from stone slumber to meet Demona. Also, in the Goliath Chronicles (I can't think of the episode name right now) but we actually see him turn to stone along with the clones, permanetly. Than again The Goliath Chronicles don't really count, so I guess we have to see what happens in the comics.
Warcrafter - [grafixfangamer1@sbcglobal.net]
LEEEEEERRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYY JEEEEEEEEEEEEENKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINS is my idol!

Matt: I know it doesn't make the question any less stupid, but when did we ever see Thailog turn to stone? I can only think of one time we even saw him in stone (near the beginning of "Double Jeopardy," and it wasn't clear until the end of the episode that it wasn't Goliath), and I can't think of any time he turns to stone on screen. Given that, I can see how a casual fan could be confused, though I still wish he'd have asked in here rather than waste Greg's time. Hey, but maybe Todd can get rid of it.

Greetings from San Francisco. Just dropping in to catch up on recent news if any.

I did browse through the newest questions asked over in AG, heres a gem:
"Shawn writes...
Since Thailog is the clone of Xanatos, which would also imply that he has some human DNA, then does that mean that he doesn't turn into stone like Goliath since Xanatos's DNA would probably prevent that?"

Geeez, I don't even know where to start with that one. Thailog has been in 3 episodes, and he turned to stone in 2 of them. *sigh*

Later guys.

Sorry for the double-post, but I went back and checked, and while my "Arthurian animation" post hadn't gotten any replies (or moderator-locks), it did get 16 views. That doesn't necessarily mean that it'll lead to 16 more people buying the DVD, of course, but at least it can't hurt.

Well, the good news is that I didn't get into any trouble at the AKOTAS forum for my "Arthurian animation" post. Nobody's commented on it as yet, either, but at least a few people might see it.

Lord Sloth > I sort of steered them over here. In my story I worked in links to Greg's Friday Con Report (which is here), the site for the Nashville Gathering, and to SLG's website for the comic.
William C. Maune - [william.maune@toonzone.net]

The main reason I haven't posted anywhere about the DVD is that other than here and the TGS room, the only other forum I'm a sort of regular at is a MIDI newsgroup. And without a working e-mail account, I can no longer post there anyway. Other than that, I'm a lurker at Kevin's Watch, but not being a regular, I'd probably look like the spammers that were hanging around here last year. (Especially since not only am I a terrible salesperson, there's really only one thing that Gargoyles and Thomas Covenant have in common.)

As for the other suggestions, it looks like the only one I can do is write the letter (which I'm going to do after this). The buying a copy for the library would be an excellent idea, except for the fact that my library refuses to admit that it's the twenty-first century and doesn't accept DVDs. And as for spreading the word among friends and family, I've been trying to do that for years. So far, the only person I've managed to get interested is my boss. And he won't buy the DVD since he knows if he's ever in the mood to watch an episode, he can just ask me to loan him my copy. So really, I can't see what else I can do.

Makhasu : In my case, the reason I haven't gotten too exited about the comic is because I still can't really believe it's happening. I've had the 'Gargoyles will most likely never be coming back, so you might as well get used to it' mindset for so long, this pretty much feels like a dream that's simply too good to be true. Until I'm actually holding the comic next month, I'm not going to get all that exited about it. After that, well, that's another story entirely.

<ENTER LORD SLOTH>

Getting sentimental about everyone's fun gathering, I've been going over internet photos and Gorebash's video captures of 2004 in order to recapture my memories. My problem is I remember people's aliases, and I remember the faces of people I met in person; but even during the event I had trouble reconciling the two. So does anyone know of photos of 2004 (or any gathering for that matter) where the names are somehow indicated? Even real names would help me out, to have more to go on then just faces. In fact any good Gathering cashe of something ought to peak my fancy. Preciate it very.
BTW, if you want some inspiration, click me name and watch Greg W. first hand. He got us all excited about maxing out the first DVD sales and getting a new show. Though we didn't do perfect, we did get this far, with a continuation to boot. I still think it's a heartening watch.

TODD/MERLYN> "I decided that it was safe to include a post on it in a new thread that I started entitled "Arthurian animation"…I hope that it won't be seen as stepping out of line."
It was well done; the Mods shouldn't have a problem when everyone is professional, even if you're new. If they do, they will likely just lock the thread which will still allow people to see it for a while and learn the good news
Though, regardless of the once and future space king, a few of us really ought to talk about the Gargoyles comic in the off topic forum (http://www.talkaboutcomics.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=107), it's a gathering of comic lovers after all! If we hit people who remember the show, they'll want to know about the DVDs as well. Don't expect a lively chat, but people will at least read it.
There could be other relevant forums there, (it's a HUGE list) but that's all I saw.

William C.> "Our news story on Toon Zone has now been read by over 1000 people"
That's great! And good steering them in a productive direction too. Do you reference them over here at all? I'm wondering if they saw it they might come over which could end the discussion there, thus less people would see. But then, some of our thoughts might be of use to them, so if we don't bring em here, we ought to still expose them. Ya think?

Matt> "No time to say much except: WELCOME BACK LORD SLOTH!!!!"
Well, what else is there to say really? We've got to get the old ego fired up again. ((^8(
Actually, I'll try to keep that in check, but it's nice to feel welcome. Cheers bud.

Abby> "And a friend who is a moderator on a Narnia-related forum usually has a Gargoyles avatar and has used it as a springboard for spreading the news."
Yeah, that's happened to me to, and it's pretty neat when it does. Unfortunately, many forums have a strict size requirement, like 1 by 1 inch. Keep that in mind making your avatars, Makhasu.
And thanks for the info on convergence, good crowd for Greg to draw on if it's Star Trek based! Anyone else going?

As mentioned, sometimes the written word (as opposed to the typed word) can have a greater impact on the reader, showing more effort was taken and the to be taken more seriously. Sending a letter here is basically the same as the e-male addresses Battle Beast and King Cobra gave us, but I recommend we do both.

Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted here but I heard the unfortunate news about the rest of Gargoyles season 2 and thought I'd drop by. I posted a short blog on my myspace page along with a link to Buena Vista's Gargoyles DVD page. On that page is a question link where you can make a comment asking about when the rest of Gargoyles will be released. I received a response that they forwarded my request to the marketing department. Maybe if a few hundred people do the same thing it will be one way of making noise. If you all have myspace pages maybe put up something for Gargoyles even if it's just a blog. It might get some attention from your other friends.

Andrew Alvarez - [highlander3000@verizon.net]

Our news story on Toon Zone has now been read by over 1000 people (and counting). Now its a matter of continuing to talk to those who have responded about the situation, and spreading the word further. If anyone knows other DVD news and or animation news sites, make sure they know about this! For instance, hopefully TVShowsOnDVD.com will pick up the news soon. They have carried serveral stories on the Gargoyles DVDs in the past.

STORMY - Thanks for the advice. Since I've been posting there fairly frequently for the last couple of months (I've already had 40-something posts there), I decided that it was safe to include a post on it in a new thread that I started entitled "Arthurian animation". In it, I focused on "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" and "Avalon" (including a mention of Macbeth's big speech about King Arthur and Merlin in the former, concluding with the line - which I specifically quoted - "Merlin's magic was stronger than everything, except the human heart."). I hope that it won't be seen as stepping out of line.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

TODD: First, if you're a regular poster there, mentioning Gargoyles won't seem like spamming as long as you focus on the Arthurian aspects. If you're not a regular poster there, I still think a reasoned post focusing on Arthurian aspects of Gargoyles isn't spam, since it's not wholly focused on OMG BUY THIS but is actually on topic to the forum. However, it'll be harder to get people to pay attention to it if you're a newbie, or if they think you've shown up solely to talk about Gargoyles . It'd still be worth doing though...50 percent of 100 is still half, zero percent of 100 is always nothing.
Stormy - [decepticoncommand@hotmail.com]

Hey guys I was wondering how long it takes Amazon.com to send you the comic. I was on there the other day, and it said that the item usually ships in about 7-8 weeks or something like that, and I'm like no way. I really don't want to wait a whole month to get it. How long did it take any of you to obtain a copy? Where did you order it from?
Mayelin - [dulcemiel83@aim.com]

Some great ideas, Todd. If you know a few places, feel free to hit them! :)
Greg Bishansky - [<---- The Tenth Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles]
"Plato once said that for everything that exists, there is a perfect form of it somewhere. A perfect human being, a perfect chair, a perfect stick, so that everything is a shadow of that one perfect form. Now, if we follow that train of thought, that means that somewhere in the universe there exists the perfect form of the absolute and complete idiot and he left here an hour ago." - Matthew Gideon

Thinking about this "Get the word out" business, it occurred to me that there are two seemingly unorthodox, yet appropriate, groups to contact in informing people about the Gargoyles Season Two Volume One DVD and urging them to buy it:

1. Shakespeare fans. GSTVO (as I'm calling it here to save space) includes such Shakespearean figures as Macbeth, the Weird Sisters, and Puck - not to mention Gargoylized analogies to Othello, Desdemona, and Iago - and to top it off, its big episode (big in the sense of the one that gets a commentary), "City of Stone", does its own "revisionist" take on "Macbeth".

2. King Arthur fans. GSTVO has "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time", for a start. We Gargoyles fans customarily focus on the pro-literacy content in that episode, but it's also one of the most intelligent and literate handlings of the Arthurian legend that I've seen in televised animation, one that certainly makes Merlin into more than just another old white-bearded wizard. That's enough to recommend it to any Arthurian buff. And there's also "Avalon" with Arthur himself showing up on stage in Part Three.

Which brings me to a related issue. There's a webcomic that I recently discovered called "Arthur King of Time and Space" (click on my name to see it), a bizarre but often very funny strip about King Arthur and his friends and enemies developing analogies of themselves in other time periods (a Star Trek-style futuristic world, modern-day America, the Wild West, etc.), which has its own forum. I was thinking of mentioning GSTVO at the forum, but I wasn't certain if it was ethical to do so - even if I focus on the Arthurian aspects (see above) as I fully intended to do, would that be like spamming? I was wondering what everyone else here thought about that.

Stormy> Those DVD sets you mentioned are mostly put out by KID RHINO. They loSt the rights to Transformers, though, and Sony now has the rights (They bought out Sunbow's parent or something like that) so there may be a better set comming soon.

However, I find KID RHICHO VERY expensive. The Transformers sets when first realesed cost $100 Canadian (around $90 us).

The My Little Pony Season 1 cost me $60, but I got it off Amazon and with a better Canadian dollar, it was cheaper.

I saw the JEM set going for $80 ($65)...

It sucks that they are so much money... That a reason some people don't buy these things. They cost an arm and a leg.

I've known about most of those for a long time...

I can't wait for Tale Spin or DWD...

The comic- I *finally* got my copy yesturday, and Im really excited about it. I know that there has been some controversy about the art ect.. ( Im not getting into that, its been beaten to death.) I must say though, Im quite pleased, and happy to see that the script matches the pilot wonderfully. Its thrilling to finally have a continuation of the story, after waiting 10 years, hoping and dreaming that perhaps one day we would see our beloved clan in action again. Ill wait patiently, and cross my fingers for the continuation of the comic. The more support we get, the better.

I have the news about the DVD situation up on Toon Zone and the hit count is steadily rising. Unfortunately, most of the response in our forums so far is mainly just Disney bashing. I'm working on getting people to move past that and on to spreading the word though.
William C. Maune - [william.maune@toonzone.net]

Makhasu: TaleSpin is coming out in August, I believe the 29th, and so is Darkwing Duck. Both volumes include the pilot episode and 20-some other episodes. (If I remember right, DWD is the 2 part pilot plus 25 eps, and TS is the 4 part pilot plus 23 eps.)

I found out because I'm a member of tvshowsondvd.com

But that DOES go to say something...I have been actively looking on the net for box sets of my favourite cartoons and was able to get "in on the ground floor" for Transformers, JEM, Thundercats, My Little Pony, and now TaleSpin. If I hadn't been deliberately seeking these out, I might never have known, and how many potential sales are people who will pick it up if they know it exists, but won't spend the time researching every few months to see if or when it might be coming to DVD?

That email is your best bet. And 2007 will be using it as well, so you will get in contact with someone for sure. :D

The DVD > Greg specifically mentioned sales, in fact, it was suprising that there were quite a few fans at the gathering who didn't get the second DVD yet. (The nice thing was, that all the fans that came to the banquet, were given a copy, courtesy of Disney)

But I still think emailing (AND WRITING) to Disney *IS* a good idea, just also encourage your friends. It's so surprising how many people you meet who don't even know either DVD is out. @.@

Makhasu> I will promise! (There's a few basic things, but people asked questions about the comic's plot throughout the gathering, so I tried to write those down as much as possible)I'm just waiting on Gorebash for something first. :)

MAKHASU - In that case, the subdued response really is something to wonder about. Maybe it's just been so long since the show was cancelled that a lot of the fans have "gotten over it" and subtly moved on, without realizing it. I know that it's become that way with me; I'm glad that the comic's coming out, but it hasn't made as big an impact on me as it might have done in, say, 1999.

And I'm still wondering *when* Amazon.com is going to realize that the comic has been released for over a week now and to get around to ship the ones that its customers ordered off to them. I'd better find another way of ordering issue No. 2.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582@hotmail.com]

OI! I found a better link for contacting Disney about the Gargoyles dvd release! This one allows you to contact Disney DVD directly and enquire about future releases. Just choose Title Availability as the nature of your feedback. If you sent a letter to the link Battle Beast found, I'd recommend also sending it here.
http://studio.go.com/cgi-bin/gmail/generic_mail.cgi?template=video/dvd_feedback/feedback.tpl

Another Gathering come and gone and I didn't get to go. Everything I've heard and seen so far only makes me wish I could kick something. I particularly wanted to see the Team Atlantis episode, 'The Last.' That and the fanart, the panels, everything... *bawls*

Todd - "It's fair to point out that part of the "subdued response" to the first issue of the Gargoyles comic having just come out is due to timing; so many of the fans were away at the Gathering during the weekend and didn't have the opportunity to post much about it on the Internet." Perhaps, but the response to the initial news was fairly subdued even before the Gathering was coming up. The Creature Comics yahoo group has had almost no activity and there hasn't been much of a 'lively buzz' in the CRs. It's just kind've... odd.

Battle Beast - "Did everyone read my last post??? Did you do it???" Yep. I've also sent my letter to the link I found, since that goes directly to Disney DVD.

JJ Gregarius - "It's just that from Greg Weisman's comments, the comic's going to be on the edge of cancellation throughout its run. It's more of an Indian summer than a golden age. The threshold for success sounds too high." Don't be so pessimistic. Give the poor horse a chance to recover before sending it to the glue factory.

Stormy - "I just hope they actually FINISH Tale Spin, since they seem to be starting series and figuring one box worth is enough for people." They're releasing Tale Spin? I used to watch that years and years ago. Didn't know it was gonna be out on dvd. I guess this is an example of Disney not promoting these old shows. How can they complain that Gargoyles isn't selling if they don't promote the releases? >=(

Siryn - "Greg did make some revelations about what's to come in the comic and 'hints' and spoilers etc at the Gathering. I took notes." Post 'em, please! ^_^

Lord Sloth - "Great idea you have about the avatars and banners, hope you share them around." Thanks. I'll definitely be sharing them ASAP. That idea about posting Amazon.com reviews is good. I'll be doing that too.

Vashkoda - "And if anyone is wondering where GNC has gone these last few weeks, it is due to technical difficulties that should soon be resolved." I was just about to post on that subject. It's nice to hear that it'll be back soon.

*bows* Missed you.

Hello, everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted in here, but I occasionally drop by to read the comments. Hearing that Greg Weisman is going to be in my area prompted me to post.

<Lord Sloth wrote: "CONvergence 2006" on July 7-9 at which Greg Weisman will be one of the guests."
If you got that from a Tolkien newsletter, is this convention MiddleEarth themed? If so I wonder what Greg's connection to that would be…I wonder very much.>

I can confirm Todd's later comment about it being a general con...I live in the Twin Cities (Bloomington is about 35 miles away), so I've heard of CONvergence but never attended. I think it originally began as a Star Trek convention but has expanded over the years into a general con, adding gaming, anime, fantasy, and comics. (See their homepage at http://www.convergence-con.org/). The guest list, in addition to Greg, includes actors from various Trek shows, writers, and even a NASA engineer.

A former coworker volunteers at this con (she dresses up like a Klingon). Maybe she can get me an autographed copy of the comic since I'll likely be out of town that weekend - and maybe encourage her to buy a DVD or comic at the same time.

Also, I ordered the comic through Amazon, and though the product page says "5 to 8 weeks" for delivery, I received a ship date of June 30 (about a week after I placed the order). So I have yet to see it but appreciate everyone's comments.

I hope S2V2 comes out on DVD and have been spreading the word among friends, including encouraging them to buy it online when it seemed hard to find in local stores. And a friend who is a moderator on a Narnia-related forum usually has a Gargoyles avatar and has used it as a springboard for spreading the news - he's had a number of fans come out of the woodwork there and express interest in the DVDs.

Song of the South> I thought the exact time period was meant to be post Civil War, but the way it was set up it could easily be pre- or post. Either way, I'm interested in it mostly for the animated shorts part. A friend had downloaded a copy from the European laser disc, and I'd seen bits of it. Biggest thing that made me squirm (as an African-American) was the dialogue, that old, stereotypical speak. I understand Disney wanting to play it safe, but I agree that it should be released with a Leonard Maltin intro, like they did with the WWII shorts. It's at least a decent film and parts of it are important to the Disney history (namely "Zip-pe-dee-do-da"). At least Iger says there's a possibility.
Asatira

BATTLE BEAST -- You're a little off the mark about "Song of The South", sorry to say.

The story behind this movie deals with a young boy from a prominent Southern family, who befriends Uncle Remus -- a black slave who works on the family's plantation. Remus is a kindly man, who tells the boy stories about the animals that live around them -- told in animated format -- which are chiefly about the misadventures of Brer Rabbit, as he matches wits with the likes of Brer Bear and Brer Fox.

Unfortunately, the boy's father feels that these tales are influencing him in a negative manner, so he orders Remus to leave and never come back (though I think also remus was sold to another owner, I can't be certain, it's been ages since I last watched the movie). This upsets the boy, and he defies his father by running after Remus, only to get himself hurt by the family's bull when he crosses a field. In the end, Remus helps the boy get better by telling him another story, and even then the father admits there is some merit to having Remus and his stories around.

Personally, I can understand why some people would be... uncomfortable about the movie, but truth be told, it's the animated segments that hold my attention.

BTW, Battle Beast, condolences to the Oilers... would have been cool to see them hoist the Cup, but looks like Game 7 History was against them.

Has EVERYONE read my long post below and done what it siad? this will only work if we all try at least once.

Lord Sloth> "Song of the South" was a movie from Disney in the forties about a black man in an animated world. The movie is very steriotypical of the poor African American male and some say it borders on rascism. (The main character is a Poor african american after the civil war named Uncle Remus.)

Some say Uncle Remus is the nicest person you'll ever meet; other disagree. I've heard from a lot of African Americans who who don't see any problems with the movie; the Disney Company is more worried about a large back-lash, more than anything.

Disney has basically blackballed it's own movie; Eisner would NEVER release it, and Iger is running along those lines but admits that IT COULD be released with a Leonard Maltin Introduction that says "back in those times, this was acceptable" and "These days, we are better than that time." OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES.

This movie gave rise to the songs "Laughing Place" and "Zip a dee doo dah."

It's ironic that Disney would use it's own blackballed movie for a ride inspiration (Splash Mountain.) A bit hypocritical, I think.

I think it's time they DID release the film on DVD with a proper introduction, and the treatment it deserves...

Warcrafter - [grafixfangamer1@sbcglobal.net]
If George Bush had Dick Cheney's first name, his name would be Dick Bush, and I'd tell you I'd listen to a lot more of his speeches.

Todd: Oh, I think as long as someone doesn't like something and keeps saying so, and a second someone is willing to argue the point, there will be conflict or at least debate :)

I once figured that TGC should be as canon as every other Gargoyles episodes, until I learned how much of the original Gargoyles was all about Greg's Master Plan, and how TGC didn't fit into it. Still, if it were me, I'd probably try to retcon the events of TGC into the master plan other than ignoring them.

But I don't think Greg's "Wrong" not to. It's HIS story, and HIS choice, and just because I might do something differently, doesn't mean there's a "Right" and a "Wrong" choice here.

Jen> I had a great time, and I'm glad I was able to help out. More details are in my LJ post, linked below.

Trip itself> for me, I don't really like the journey, mostly because the journey is pretty direct most of the time. There was that one trip to Gatlinburg that wasn't very direct, but we also blame Yahoo! maps (we got lost and had a hard time finding a gas station or store to buy a real map). Going and coming, somehow managed to get to both airports earlier than expected, so I had little stress about security check-in. Leaving Atlanta, had about an hour delay because of airconditioning. Flight itself a little bumpy towards the start and finish. Home flight was practically perfect.

Harvest> my first plane ride was fine, but the second one (and shorter of the two, was really scary with lots of bumps and turbulance and the plane bouncing up and down. @.@)

HARVESTER - I'm still waiting for Amazon.com to send the issue I'd ordered from them as well. It seems to have taken them a while to realize that it's been released - unless they never got around to obtaining copies from SLG.

Just got back from the con. I didn't update on the CR because I stopped paying the overpriced $10 a day for net access and I forgot to bring my USB cable to the con, so I couldn't upload the videos. Now that I'm home I'll try to get all the goodies up this week.

Every con has been increasingly better and this year was by far the best experience I've had at a con thus far. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that there are a lot of con regulars who I know by face now and can feel much more comfortable with rather than just a room of unknown faces paired with names on a paper tag around their neck.

The big downers for me this year were that Ed Asner couldn't make it and Jim Cummings (voice of Dingo), who *never* does cons, was there on Saturday and I never got to meet him. But I did hand my camera off to Redraptor who DID meet him and so at least I've got a picture... and my camera met Jim Cummings... lucky camera.

Bah! SO much to say. But this isn't the time. I'll write up my con journal and post it with the pics and videos sooner than later.

Guardian - <I see that DPH has posted in Ask Greg his/her blog of sorts for the Gathering.> I'm a man, and that's just the pre-story. I have my Friday's and Saturday's journal written up, but I haven't typed them up yet. Sunday's and Monday's journals are in the unwritten category at the moment.

Considering how many people in the past have posted their gathering journal with a story of how they got there, I thought it appropriate to list mine. After all, the journy is often just as important (if not more) as the destination. Even before I left, I knew I was going to put that story in my gathering journal. To me, it was just as important (if not more) than my actual trip there on Friday. What I went through Monday (especially the last parts of it) can't be written right now, because I'm uncertain about parts of it, mainly how my dad acted when I got back. His actions are one thing, his attitude is another. Sunday's journal might be written soon.

The comic books will help get the word out. People (Nerds, geeks, comic book fans) will see it (hopefully) in their local comic stop and pick it up, read Greg's blog and find out that the DVDs are available. Now, if Greg could advertise the DVDs in EACH episode... wait, I mean *issue,* then we'd get some attention and that what we need. It would have been nice had Disney put it on the BAMBI DVD, but they only do that for *important* DVDs.

Does anyone know any more? Great idea you have about the avatars and banners, hope you share them around.

Marty> That was very informative, thanks. I know what you mean about waiting for boxed sets. Cheaper, and often re-releases are made to rake in more cash.

JJ> "The threshold for success sounds too high."
I respect that you seem to be a practical pragmatist type of person, but sometimes convincing people of the inconvenient truth (opinion rather) can really have a downer effect. Sometimes hopeless optimism is the only thing to pull a thing from the fire. If we do nothing because it's hopeless, you will be no doubt be proven right. BTW, I did see that you plan to write letters and such in spite of yourself, so kudos for that. The bad news is that there are zero guaranties, but the good news is that there are ZERO GUARANTIES!

Siren> I'd love to see some music videos, I've seen to few all and all, and you're getting some good reviews. Gruarch and Mcbeth could make some enchanting ones, what music is it to?

Todd> It's a tough call, they are all splendid concepts for stories, but I do relish the thought of the double date the most, I think. Meybe it's cause Greg's released the most info on it but: so much romance, so much denial, so much Delihla who barely know. I think I'm hoping for Morgan over Jason, I can still hear the Kieth/Kieth/Salli/Salli scenario in my mind's ear. And I also hope Brooklyn doesn't time jump to quickly, we've got to treasure our time with his innocence while we can.

"CONvergence 2006" on July 7-9 at which Greg Weisman will be one of the guests."
If you got that from a Tolkien newsletter, is this convention MiddleEarth themed? If so I wonder what Greg's connection to that would be…I wonder very much.

Battle Beast> "Did everyone read my last post??? Did you do it???"
I meant to mention that was a nice idea of yours. It won't speak to them more then dollars will, but it is getting the name in their faces which ought not to be bad, and if letters are heart-felt, then we just could reach somebody. So I sent mine, (even recommended your song of the south, though I don't know it) I'm afraid I was a bit deceptive though, sounding younger then I am and (after I read Marty Lund's thoughts) I added that I was waiting for the entire set before I bought part one. If I'm occasionally evil, it's for a good cause.

Me> "I find it hilarious despite not knowing what a BYOBB is."

"I know my apprehetions might never be allayed and so I close realizing that perhaps, the ending, is not yet, writen."

Todd: I think another reason for the subdued response might be that the first two issues are "The Journey." I think things will really pick up once we get to the new material in October.

Of course, if people are like me, they're still waiting for their order to come in.

"Explain to me again how we were going to conquer the Earth with a white Michael Jackson?"

todd> Greg did make some revelations about what's to come in the comic and 'hints' and spoilers etc at the Gathering. I took notes, I didn't get all of them (I was staff, so I had staff things to do and was leaving panels halfway through), but I got a couple. I'll post them soon.

I think with the DVDs, a lot of people simply don't know it's out, I agree spreading the word IS important, and all fans should try doing their part. :) I mean, simply bringing it up in conversation, or blogging about it, *gasp* or saying 'hey! Wanna watch a cool show?'.

Also, Gargoyles can't really go 'underground', because it's still owned by Disney, not Greg. They'd seek out and destroy published work in a heartbeat that isn't giving them money, and then Greg would be stripped from the project indefinately. Disney were actually the ones who suggested Greg work with SLG, so props to them in a minor case?

SIryn - [siryn7@aol.com]

Demonskrye: One thing I have noticed, though, is that the Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin box sets coming out in August both include the pilot episodes, and to my knowledge, mention them on the packaging as one of the selling points. So while Disney isn't re-doing the RR and DT boxes to include the pilot in the first volume, they have apparently corrected this choice in following box sets.

I just hope they actually FINISH Tale Spin, since they seem to be starting series and figuring one box worth is enough for people.

Todd: I don't think killing off the clan would've stopped the Gargoyles story. Enough people already reject TGC as canon.

When Is Gargoyles Dead: Quite simply, Gargoyles is dead when Greg decides he is no longer interested in telling this story, or when Greg wraps up the story in a "conclusion" and hangs up his hat as far as telling the story goes.

Got back yesterday from the Gathering. Con journal in link below (LJ post).
Asatira - [<---- gathering journal]

I was just wondering if the story in #3 of the comic (when it moves into new territory) might be the Double Date story:

1. It's going to come out in October, making a story with a Halloween-setting very timely.

2. Greg Weisman's remarks about the internal chronology of the series indicate that the events of "Hunter's Moon" and "The Journey" took place in late October. With that being the case, the Halloween where Goliath and Elisa go out on the double date with Delilah and either Jason Canmore or Officer Morgan could easily be just a couple of days later.

I might be wrong, of course (especially since Greg's mentioned before that his aborted plans for the third season had "The Journey" being followed by either the "Alex-gets-kidnapped" episode or Brooklyn's Timedancer adventure), but I just thought that I'd mention this possibility.

Side-note: I was just looking at a Tolkien newsletter of mine (came out a couple of weeks ago), and it included in the Conventions list at the back a mention of a "CONvergence 2006" on July 7-9 at which Greg Weisman will be one of the guests. (It's at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, in Bloomington, Minnesota.) Just thought that you people might be interested.

I see that DPH has posted in Ask Greg his/her blog of sorts for the Gathering. I spoke to Blaise of s8 during the Gathering, and he said to me that Gorebash was going to reopen Ask Greg submission primarily for the purpose of those who went to the Gathering to blog about their experience. My question is, is this true? And if it is, are people permitted to go and post such now?

Many thanks to all. And expect me everywhere! I was apparently one of fifty-plus walk-ins on Sunday! My faith and enthusiasm for the fandom has been renewed! I have been blessed!

Well, I'm back. I can't say that the trip from Valencia to Phoenix or vica versa is something I'd want to do on a regular basis, but it was a good road trip this once.

On DVDs >> I think one of the biggest handicaps the Season 2 - Vol 1 DVD has is that it draws on both of the negatives belonging to piecemeal releases and bulk releases. On the one hand, it has an elevated price-point - something any DVD product that sports more than a handful of episodes usually faces. On the other, it has the stigma of being fractional - incomplete.

There are always consumers out there who want to wait for the "finished" product or the lower-priced boxed set of something that's first released in pieces. I know I bought the Lord of the Rings on DVD only when the full extended edition uber-box-sets came out for each movie. I only buy Inuyasha in the season boxes too.

Gargoyles isn't like those situations for 2 reasons. A.) It isn't the kind of property that gets 8 or 9 different re-packs in its life and B.) it is only 2 Volumes to the season.

So it actually requires a lot more work to push Season 2 - Volume 1 than it took to push Gargoyles - the complete Season 1 DVD.

It isn't a hopeless situation though. Overall sales figures have nowhere to go but up. The real issue is making sure that the increase is significant enough to warrant Season 2 - Volume 2.

Something I'm considering mentioning in the letter I send, although I figured I'd run it here first:

What about asking to just at least get the episodes on DVD? Special features, commentaries and etc. are definitely nice and all, but still the main reason I buy the DVDs is to have the episodes. I assume a bare bones DVD set with just the remaining episodes on it would probably be cheaper for Disney and thus might make a release more cost-effective. While there are definitely episodes in the latter half of the second season I would love to have commentary on, I'd much rather have a DVD without extra features than no DVD at all.

William C. Maune - [william.maune@toonzone.net]

It's fair to point out that part of the "subdued response" to the first issue of the Gargoyles comic having just come out is due to timing; so many of the fans were away at the Gathering during the weekend and didn't have the opportunity to post much about it on the Internet. Things should pick up once they get back.

(As for me, I'm still waiting for Amazon.com to realize that it came out a week earlier than they were expecting and ship it to me. It's a pity that my neighborhood doesn't have a comics store.)

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I know this is normally Patrick's icon so forgive me for borrowing it for a sec.

Just had to say that I had a BLAST at my first ever Gathering. Everyone was so fantastic and it was just so great to finally go! I was stoked my friend Bri did so well in the Art Show and that everyone really seemed to adore her works.

And I was ecstatic to attend the Masquerade, let alone get Best Canon Character. Wow. I was just so thrilled that everyone really seemed to like the outfit, and I'm thinking/hoping Greg liked it too ^^

Speaking of the DVD and interest and all...I posted a pic of my costume at a forum I normally attend and immediately someone was like "OMG I must track down the DVDS...do they exist?" and I jumped on it right away to let her know that two DVDs were already out :) Gargoyles fans are always coming out of the woodwork it seems, and I really hope someone we can manage to get S2V2 released.

Trickster - [scruffyrebel@yahoo.com]

Testing a different avatar and colors...

I got my copy of the Gargoyles comic today. I LOVE IT! My heart skipped a beat from just holding it in my hands. The series is back and better than ever! The art gets the job done. At times it's rather bleah, and sometimes it really awesome. I'm sure Hedgecock will get better with each issue. The writing is, of course, perfect. I love the timing at the end of the book. ^_^

Now is the best time to be a Gargoyles fan. We've got dvds, an OFFICIAL COMIC CONTINUANCE, the Gathering going strong.... Why do we have people suggesting that the series be given up on? It's not a dead horse, a complete series, or a creative SNAFU. The fanbase's enduring interest is the only reason we have the series again. The series never finished! All the stories we've seen are just a small part of what Greg's waiting to tell. Greg has complete control over the story - what more can we ask for? Sure, the art's not perfect, but it's good enough to tell the story. Besides, I don't see legions of professional artists lining up to take Hedgecock's place. The series is back and that's all that matters.

Disney's not properly promoting the series, so it's up to the fans to do what they can. Write letters, post on forums, try to get comics and animation news sites to post stories about Gargoyles being released; anything you can think of. The littlest post can make a difference. I'm going to make banners, signatures, and avatars promoting the series' return and post at LEAST a few dozen promotions of the series on various major forums. I'll be damned if the series dies for want of a nail!

Greg is right. Some of the fans have been rather lazy. They get a official continuance of the story (something a lot of other fandoms would kill for) and they nitpick it half to death before the first issue is even out. There's little discussion about it and only scattered cheers. The Gargoyles Fan Website, which is the first site that comes up when you do a search for the series, doesn't even mention its return!

Time isn't on our side. Each fan should do what little or lot they can to help.

Siren - I've got those episodes in fairly good quality. I can upload them somewhere for you if you want. BTW, I LOVE your music videos! They were the first Gargoyles MVs I'd ever seen. I particularly adore the Macbeth/Gruoch vid. A remake with dvd footage would be great... ^_^

GOREBASH - Could I make some avatars for this comment room? I wanted to scan various characters from the first Gargoyles issue and add some new high-quality avatars to the pot. I can also make some avatars from dvd screenshots as well. I've done these before and I'm pretty good at it.

Well partial credit must go to Mr. Weisman, he did a small part (;p). But your concern and commitment are quite infections, posting so often, digging up those sites; it's inspirational. You remind me of me, back when I was young and a woma- uhhhhhhhh, izer. A womanizer. <Goes shifty eyed> Yeah that's it.

"The idea of pooling money to advertise it is nice, but considering a lot of us are pretty strapped for cash... ahh, I don't know how it would work. It's a nice thought, but it would be kind of rude to ask anyone to do that."

Yes agreed, our numbers and our average age do tend to equal a small amount of dough. I have even less. That was more to illustrate the use of telling as many people as possible. But if we set goals we want to accomplish (and we can start small) a lot of little sums of cash can go a long way. None should feel obligated to sell themselves to slavery though.

And there are committed fans willing to buy more the one copy, if just one of these sets were donated to their local library, could do a lot to spread the word. Now I'm guessing people who are content to rent it would not spend the money to buy it anyway, but...I dunno, maybe we should just donate season 1 but include a self written notice that there's more available to buy (the volume that needs it).

"My friend suggested that we visit the forums for these sites and promote the comic, and perhaps add in something about the DVDs"

Nice, mayhaps volunteers could be split up? I know, I'm still on my organization fantasy, but if we know all bases are covered, people won't have to shoot in the dark about how they can help. We'd might have to elect a leader or three first, but a committee system could work to...<shrugs>

If George Bush had Dick Cheney's first name, his name would be Dick Bush, and I'd tell you I'd listen to a lot more of his speeches.

A thought!

After talking with a friend of mine who is into comic books (and promising to buy him Season One and S2V2 on DVD and let him pay me back in installments... hey, I said I'd do what's necessary :P), he has given me some links to places where, if he hasn't already, Greg can promote the comic (and maybe the DVDs).

I'm unsure how much of this works, and I don't know if it costs anything to get Greg an interview, but... here are some of the places my friend directed me to:

www.newsarama.com - In the contact section there is a link where people can suggest a story. Do you suppose someone (or Greg himself) can do this and get an interview, and thus promotion?

www.comicbookresources.com - In the contact section here, as well, you can suggest a story.

www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com - This site... wow, it confused the hell out of me trying to find anything since to me it kind of looks jumbled together, and I didn't see a contact section. Though for the more experienced eye, maybe someone can find it.

www.comicscontinuum.com - Doesn't have a forum, and yet again I am having a hard time navigating, but supposedly it's a good site.

My friend suggested that we visit the forums for these sites and promote the comic, and perhaps add in something about the DVDs. One of the forums has a thread which he showed me about the comic, and based on what little I saw it didn't appear to show they knew about the DVDs, so maybe some threads/posts about it in these places will clue people in.

At the very least, it couldn't hurt. It would be advertising, and that would always help, especially since I'm sure at least a few people were fans once. And getting into good, in depth conversations may entice new people to the series to investigate.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Snail Mail -

That's actually a good idea. If anyone who is also writing a letter to them gets a name and address, mind passing it along to me so I can do my part and write to them as well? The thought had never occurred to me before (I'm sheltered, so I didn't quite realize it was possible ^^; ), but now that it has... well, one more way for me to do my part.

Though it rather reminds me of Shawshank Redemption, where the one character wrote one letter a week to the library for funding and they finally gave in just to shut him up... anyone want to try that? XD Heheheheh. Who knows, maybe it would work! ;)

Lord Sloth - "Just wanted to say that this as well other posts you made really helped in convincing me to return and do stuff.... Ha ha, now any tom foolery I get up to again will be on your head!"

Oh boy, I have inspired somebody.... while that usually never tends to be good (this is me we're talking about, after all!), perhaps in this case fortune will be smiling upon me. XD Heehee. Rock on, dude; I think we need all the help we can get at this point, and every one person can make one difference that could turn the tides in our favour.

Some good ideas there, too... it's not really realistic to think that fans are fans of only ONE show; I'm a die-hard Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates fan (an old, old show that few people remember (and Tim Curry voiced Hook! Eeeeee!) and am a moderator on one of the ONLY message boards about it... where I have already pimped the DVDs and the comic) but I'm also a die-hard Gargoyles fan, I loved Ahh! Real Monsters, and so many other cartoons... well, it's possible if we can find some boards that are relevant to the same themes as Gargoyles, we might uncover a few fans who could be interested in the DVDs!

It couldn't hurt to ask around, at least, and maybe set up an "I'll advertise you if you advertise me" thing with them.

The idea of pooling money to advertise it is nice, but considering a lot of us are pretty strapped for cash... ahh, I don't know how it would work. It's a nice thought, but it would be kind of rude to ask anyone to do that.

Of course, for the artists in the fandom... *ponders* I don't know if it would be legal, but perhaps Gargoyles-themed artwork sold could have a percentage go to advertising in places for the DVDs and comic. I'm no businesswoman, so I'd have no idea how or if that could work. It's something to think about, anyway.

Personally, on my own website (which I have been attempting to work on today, despite the fact that for some reason it's refusing me access) I'm intending to make links on the main page to the DVD and comic sites, so any visitors who go there (who could by some off-chance be old fans) will be inclined to take a peek, and maybe consider purchasing. Maybe others could do the same?

And when I get news on when the other forum I moderate is back up and running, I'll promote it there, too. I know there's one or two fans there who might be interested.

Harvester of Eyes - "Neither am I. I don't have my Disney Afternoon tape of "The Reckoning," anymore, and I miss Fang's "kinky!" remark. And I think censorship is for pussies and facists."

Bloody right! The only episodes I have, or have been able to get are the two previous DVDs, and I'd hate to have them feel lonely on the shelf without the S2V2 set. That and I'm greedy; I want S2V2 and I don't care HOW I get it, as long as I do. And I don't care WHAT I have to do to get it (aside from some obvious things which are filthy, and won't do): I. Want. S2V2.

I also agree on the censorship bit. Bwahaha!

Matt - I am getting my comic on Wednesday, so you're not the only one who's excited to have it in your hands! I want to seeeee! XD

Starlioness: <so I'm guessing even If the comic does super well, that wouldn't even make a dent in Disney reconsidering that> So, it can be used in other ways. I do agree that there's a lot to be said for writing a letter. If these people who are making the comic sell out don't know that the series is on DVD, and then find out, and THEN find out that it's incomplete and want to go back and get reacquainted with the whole series, imagine if every one of them wrote a letter.

Reno: My faith in amazon.com is a little shaken right now. They don't even have a graphic for the comic. Someone offered some alternative links last week. I tried one of those. Hopefully, I'll get it next week.

JJ: <Gotta try a different angle of attack.> Well, their vision is based on movement. And if you have both gasoline and frozen orange juice lying around, you can make napalm.

"Explain to me again how we were going to conquer the Earth with a white Michael Jackson?"

<ENTER LORD SLOTH?>

Ah, the old nostalgic aroma of cookie dough I associate with Station 8, it's been awhile. But it sounds like it's the time to make more time for this world, and for the first time in MANY years, not in a nostalgic way! It's back! They Live Again!!

Or at least, I desperately hope they will. "Complacency of the fans", it's a heartbreaking concept. All the more so because I'm guilty of this myself to a large degree. Three years ago, this sort of revolution for the franchise would of had me full on fighting and fretting to keep this window open, but somehow I lost my way. Back during 2004 Montreal, my first and only gathering, I wouldn't have thought that my fervor (which was already slipping at the time) would come so close to going out after seeing that fervor first hand in the eyes of the fans.

I tried to stay somewhat connected in ask Greg, so I knew things were moving, but not having internet very often in college disconnected me from the movers, you people. I made a nuscince of my self a fair bit spreading the word for the first DVD, but since then life and other stories have diverged me, till I moved here, renovating a house in Nova Scotia for my mom to retire in, loosely connected to everything, intimate with little.

Then yesterday, I stumbled on Greg's latest plea, read up the past week here and saw preview pages of the comic and it tore me up. Gotta do something now.

I do hope this isn't a widespread problem, I know a lot of you have been with the fandom much longer and would not be distracted so easily. With what sounds like a fantastic Gatherering to debute issue #1 wrapping up, I suppose I'll soon see many fans pour in here, loyalty a blazing. We'll see soon.

I don't want to sound all knowing about the situation, having been away, I may make presumptions that are a tad naive, so try to bear with me. I just want to say in response to JJ Gregarius's "dead horse" analysis that these sorts of beatings can and have jumpstarted the old heart again. Case in point: Farscape. Granted it's a more recent cancellation and a larger fan base, but it still qualifies as a "cult show". Those fans, like all fans, just went nuts when they lost it; but unlike all fans they got organized, and more organized and they never let up till they did get more (an amazing mini series) and (I think) their still at it. They organization managed to get them some money as well, they had specific projects to donate toward getting adverts in magazines, buying DVD sets to donate to libraries and plenty more, but it all revolved around SPREADING the WORD and thus INCREASING the RANKS.

Now, us guys have been known to flog the dead gargoyle for some time, it's the reason most of us are still here; and besides, those were some good times! But NOW it IS kicking, we have 2/3rds of the DVDs, a new comic book series and the ever interesting conventions, this could be the tip of the berg, or we can leave it at that. Personally, I feel sick of sing "K Sara Sara".

Personally, I'd get the help of other fandoms. I'm just now getting acquainted with the Dragonlance fandom after a long single love affair with Dragonlance. I've found that they are in a similar boat what with a beautiful new comic series that needs interest to be shown or…who knows. As someone at the gathering said to me (Greg Bishansky I think), "we're all well rounded nerds here", well, that must apply everywhere to. Dragonlace fans must have once loved/could love/still love gargoyles, what with similar fantastical and epic themes going on, and vice versa for gargoyle fans. Rather then use hit and run appeals to fandoms who might buy DVDs, we should be organized about it, group together those with certain alternative loves and do the missionary thing as a group. Prid pro quo, show support for their troubles and they just might do the same for us (if we don't convert them completely (B^D)). Star Trek, Tolkin, batman, D&Ders, Power Rangers (err, maybe not) many could potentially like this show, if they haven't once already. I acknowledge and applaud efforts already made to get these guys but (again, correct me if I'm wrong) it hasn't necessarily been enough of a team effort. Go go gadget team!

And yes, William, letters don't hurt at all either. There must be someone at disney who makes these sorts of researches and would take notice...

Demonskrye> Well, yes you're right. We should push the show quallities more then it's failures, but if we find like minded fanatics (see above) the stress of our situation could be an aid.

Todd> since fans were disgusted with TGC soon enough anyway, I don't suppose it would make much difference if everyone had died or abandoned NY. The fans still banded together and chose to ignore it for the most part. Some once-fans might be under the belief that it's cannon, but if they know about the comic, that should alleviate their concerns.
And as for Disney's embarrassment, well they ought to be able to see how normal and smart we all turned out. Uhhhhaaahhhg, they've probably seen the convention documentary? Right, no chance of that then.

Matt> Uh yeah. What you said, though of course you mannage to say it first while I'm busy writing my mammoth essay. Heh, good to see yeah again.

Sadistic cow> "I don't know about anyone else, but I don't care what it takes - I want S2V2. And I, personally, will be damned if I don't pull out all the stops and do what's necessary to get it - or, at least, keep the possibility alive for a bit longer. It may be just a cartoon show (and now comic), and I may sound weird for saying this, but Gargoyles was - and still is - an integral part of my life."

Just wanted to say that this as well other posts you made really helped in convincing me to return and do stuff. Now I'm inclined to agree 100%, though it's been an age since I watched (Really watched) an episode, I remember now how it feels. Ha ha, now any tom foolery I get up to again will be on your head! Muhaha, keep it up yall of you, just might reel in some more of us!

P.S. I see my old Cagney image has been claimed, but I'm all for a new look. Let's see how Hudson fits.

From my own experience, I'd say that snail mail can do a bit of good. Back in early 1997, I wrote a letter to Disney on behalf of "Gargoyles" after I found out that the series was going to be cancelled. One of the people there sent a brief reply to me saying that they thought what I'd said about it was interesting and included in it a few "Gargoyles" cards. So, if nothing else, you might get a pleasant response from the company.

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Hey, everybody. I've been moving again (second time in a month, ugh) and havn't had reliable internet access so I've been missing the past few weeks.

Crappy news about the S2V2 DVD. Still, it is not too late yet. Writing letters, spreading the word about the previous DVDs and the comic and just doing what we've been doing for the last 10 years could get the DVD out there one day. I've never given up on this series and its future, and I'm not about to start now. Esspecially not in what could be the beginning of the Golden Age of the Gargoyles fandom. Our Gatherings are still strong with many attendants (in fact, arn't they getting bigger?) and we have most the series on DVD plus new material in the comic. This is a great time to be a Garg fan. Lets keep our chins up and keep trying, we'll get there.

I have not got the comic yet, but I have several issues on order. From now on I'm just gonna have the local comic shop pre-order them for me, this waiting is intolerable. I am excited to see the whole book sitting in my eager little hands!

I hope to be able to drop by more often, but we'll see. Keep the faith, guys and gals.

Matt - [O'Fallon, Mo, USA]

I think there might have been addresses mentioned in the past as well. However, due to turnover, promotions, etc. in the entertainment industry, those names and addresses might not be current. Thus, I was hoping that someone might know the best current address. If no one happens to know, I'll definitely be searching for whatever current addresses I can online.
William C. Maune - [william.maune@toonzone.net]

I'm almost certain Greg W. has mentioned good Disney addresses to write to in the past. If not, I imagine poking around the web a bit would probably turn something up. Whatever you do, don't use the comment form on Disney's website, as it seems totally useless. I sent an e-mail about the absence of the pilot episodes on the "DuckTales" and "Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers" sets and never heard a thing back. Besides, a physical snail mail letter is widely considered to have more impact.

I don't know if there's a ton more I can personally do on the DVD front. I'll consider sending a letter if someone finds a good address. But I already gave all the people I know who would want a copy both Season 1 and Season 2 Part 1. One thing I would suggest to anyone trying to promote the DVD: play down the idea that the future of Season 2 Part 2 is riding on Part 1's sales. We should be touting this as a great series that people are really going to enjoy. You don't want somebody to feel like they're buying it to do a favor for the fandom, because chances are, they won't do it for that reason. I've said many times that I'd be happy to see everything anyone wanted to have on DVD come out on DVD in a reasonable time frame. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna run out and buy copies of something I don't care for or actively dispise just because someone somewhere wants the whole series to come out.

It does confound and bother me how Disney seems to be treating their TV shows on DVD. They seem to just quietly float a box set out into release with little fanfare or advertising and wait for the numbers to come in to determine if they're going to do more. The effect that not having Season Two Part Two may have on sales of the comic is probably not something the Disney decision makers are concerned about. I'm not sure the people in charge of determining whether or not a DVD gets released are even aware of the comic's existance and even if they are, the money from even pretty strong sales of the comic is likely less than a drop in the bucket for Disney. In a way, I guess we should count ourselves lucky; I have heard nothing about second box sets for "DuckTales" and "Rescue Rangers" and we at least got two. But TSC is right. It's a tough blow for those of us who have no copies of the episodes Season Two Part Two would cover.

On the hopeful side, I've noticed that Greg is going to be at San Diego Comic Con. (Me too.) So hopefully some of the throngs of people there will notice the promotion for the comic and maybe realize that the DVD is out.

Demonskrye

The discussion here somehow reminds me of the speculation that I'd had once over: What if the new production team for the Goliath Chronicles had had Goliath and his clan all killed by the Quarrymen in "Angels in the Night" (and presumably didn't let Greg Weisman talk them out of it - the way that Greg actually talked them out of having the clan abandon New York)? Would that have "killed the fandom", so to speak, as in everyone simply viewing the series as dead? Would there have been no Gatherings after that? Would places like this comment room have simply shut down and the fans moving on to other series? (Of course, one snag here is the fact that the Goliath Chronicles didn't show in a lot of areas, so not all of the fandom would have seen that hypothetical episode.) It's a moot point, but I still wonder it occasionally.

I'd wait to see how the comic book does before deciding whether "Gargoyles" was a complete failure. If it goes under (say, the artwork turns too many people off of it), then I'd say that it's time for the "Should we give 'Gargoyles' a funeral and stop trying to revive it?" discussion.

I've still got the latter half of Season Two on tape, anyway, but it's difficult to go back to tape after experiencing DVD. The DVD pictures are much cleaner than the ones on tape, for one thing. And you can automatically jump to the episode that you want on DVD, while you have to feel your way about with a VCR. But I suppose that I'll just have to settle for second-best, for at least a while longer.

I wonder if part of the problem might still be that at least some of the execs at Disney regard "Gargoyles" with a certain level of embarrassment, the way that a clean-cut responsible studious kid at school would feel about a time in his or her life when he/she gave into peer pressure and started dressing and acting like one of the "bad kids" before suddenly seeing himself/herself in the mirror and crying, "What am I doing? This isn't who I am!" Maybe "Gargoyles" would have gotten better advertising if it had been a product of an animation company that had more of a reputation for producing action-packed super-hero cartoons (like WB with its DC Comics-based series) - but such a company might not have come up with "Gargoyles" in the first place, so again, it's a moot point.

Gah! My post should read "(and their address)?" That's what I get for not copyediting closely enough.
William C. Maune - [william.maune@toonzone.net]

Does anyone know who the best person to address a letter to would be (and there address)?

It certainly isn't guaranteed to work, but I think writing letters could be helpful. I've written letters to entertaiment companies in the past and more often that not I have at least gotten a response back, and last year it helped get a show back on Cartoon Network. Thus, I'd like to write a letter encouraging a release of Season 2, Vol. 2 and talking about how much I've enjoyed the previous DVD sets. It may not work, but it certainly can't hurt. When it comes to contacting companies, letter writing is generally the best way to go because people actually get individually written letters in their hands.

Continuing to spread the word is still definitely the top priority, but I think additionally writing letters is worth a shot. First though, the proper name(s) and address(es) to write the letters to must be found.

JJ Gregarius - "At some point, you might have to accept that you're beating a dead horse. Disney apparently cannot make sufficient money off of DVDs sales in the current format. Gotta try a different angle of attack."

Well, obviously. But I'll accept it when it is said, straight-out, no questions asked: "We are NOT going to put the DVD out. Ever." Because right now, the way I understand it, it's said that it "may" not come out - not that it "is more definitely not".

Until then, I'm going to keep trying. :P

Everybody seems to be missing a very import point...
If Greg did underground work, it would not, I repeat, *NOT*, be Gargoyles. It would be a new line of thought, possibly heavily influenced by his background musings about the Gargoyles universe. Hence my comments about Gargoyles being a SNAFU that perhaps should be terminated.

I understand that it would be quite an undertaking, and that it could be infeasible. But at some point, Greg Weisman, (if you happen to be reading this, I might as well address this part to you) you have to make a decision. Either you make your own work, or you work for someone else. If you choose the later, and the series just ain't gonna sell, you accept it, realizing that the work is not yours by your own choice.

TSC>> At some point, you might have to accept that you're beating a dead horse. Disney apparently cannot make sufficient money off of DVDs sales in the current format. Gotta try a different angle of attack.

JJ Gregarius

One way people can help promote the comic is by going to the various websites and leaving comments. I'd start by going to the Reviews/Talk@ sections at http://www.newsarama.com and finding the thread for Gargoyles #1. Also, it doesn't hurt to mention it in your blogs. Never know whether a former Gargoyles fan will read it. (It actually happened once in my case.) There are probably better, more aggressive spread-the-word campaigns than what I suggest, but I'm not really an expert on the subject.

You can also show it to all of your friends, lend them the first season--get them hooked!

Scott Iskow - [smiskow@lycos.com]

JJ Gregarius - "All things considered, I might just tape as many eps as I can off of ToonDisney and call Gargoyles a complete series."

Gee, it must be nice for the people who actually have that channel to be able to tape the episodes. For those of us who DON'T have access to them, whether through a tv channel or just being unable to download them or what-have-you, S2V2 is probably the only way we'll get to see them again. And if it doesn't come out, then we are by all accounts screwed.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't care what it takes - I want S2V2. And I, personally, will be damned if I don't pull out all the stops and do what's necessary to get it - or, at least, keep the possibility alive for a bit longer.

It may be just a cartoon show (and now comic), and I may sound weird for saying this, but Gargoyles was - and still is - an integral part of my life. So while some people may be willing to call it a complete series at this point, without the S2V2 DVD and having access to a few of the episodes which they taped off ToonDisney or whatever channel they got it from, I am not.

So you, and whoever else, can all be content with things the way they are, but there's no way that I am going to follow that route.

Oh, and: "If it worked for Homestar Runner, if it *really* worked for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, don't ya think it could work for Greg? He's more talented than the Brothers Chap (former), and Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman (latter) put together IMHO."

The TMNT creators own their creations. But Disney owns Gargoyles, not Greg. :)

I don't think that "complancency of the fans" applies to the whole fandom (though it sounds like it does--complacency of CERTAIN fans might be more accurate, ie, the people who assumed there'd be a S2V2, therefore there was no hurry to buy S2V1).

I don't think Greg means to include people who'd love to buy S2V1, but don't want to skip meals or gamble their ability to pay the rent on it.

And I don't think Greg means people who have bought S2V1 and encouraged others to do likewise.

Personally, I found the weakest episodes to be in the second half of Season 2...when the World Tour became somewhat repetitive, and we'd yet to learn how characters such as Nokkar, Yama, Raven, etc would tie in to the future of the series.

Nevertheless, I really do want the second half of Season 2 on DVD, and I'd be very disappointed if Disney didn't release it. To that end, I'm going to see if I can publicize a bit more, and I think that's what Greg really wants.

If Disney won't advertise its "Disney Afternoon" DVD sets, the fandom has to, in order to get the general public to purchase enough to keep Disney satisfied.

***

Legally, I don't know if Greg could take Gargoyles underground the way TMNT did. Not to mention, a lot of "underground" stuff STARTED There before it went mainstream, and it depends on who has rights to characters, names and likenesses, etc.

As well, the people I know who do underground-style comics find themselves putting a lot of their own time and effort into them for relatively little financial reward. Greg does have to earn a living...I don't think he's able yet to retire and just do Gargoyles to suit himself all day.

On this note, the link on my name is my personal favourite "underground" comic with an ongoing storyline. Do start at the beginning...

Stormy - [decepticoncommand@hotmail.com]

Additional thought: I think blaming this on complacency is a bit childish, Mr. Weisman. Maybe your work just isn't so popular that it could sell without adequate advertising and distribution? Maybe people saw the first season, and thought "This wasn't as good as I remember"; several people have reported getting interested in Gargoyles, only to be somewhat disinterested, even bored, by the monotony of the early part of the series.

I loved TRON, but have been content to think of it as a closed story. I can do the same for Gargoyles, much as I would rather not. I respectfully request that you consider who needs whom.

(Ironically, TRON is in comics now, too.)

JJ Gregarius said-->"Still, I will buy the comics, and will write a letter to Buena Vista Home Entertainment respectfully requesting no-frills, single DVD releases."<--

Having seen an earlier comment today on the S2V2 release I think that would be a better idea. They do make half-size discs and I think they should be put to use, this case being no exception. The price of fuel keeps going up and everything else appears to follow suit, so it sure as hell isn't making it easy to go out and buy things like this.

The Winged Vampire - [The_Winged_Vampire@hotmail.com]

Spread the word ABOUT WHAT?
The comic?

I will buy the comic through Amazon shortly -- tonight or tomorrow -- but still...

All things considered, I might just tape as many eps as I can off of ToonDisney and call Gargoyles a complete series.

Disney can't churn out DVDs based directly from the footage they use for ToonDisney, apparently. Given that, what makes you think they will support the comic unless it's a megahit? Ergo, perhaps we should consider Gargoyles an entertaining failure, a truly creative SNAFU, and hope Greg Weisman can create some sort of underground story (comics, print literature, web-based storytelling, or whatever is on the horizon) that *he* can control.

If it worked for Homestar Runner, if it *really* worked for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, don't ya think it could work for Greg? He's more talented than the Brothers Chap (former), and Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman (latter) put together IMHO.

Why be slaves to the Mouse? "Disney" is just a name; Walt's been dead for decades.

S2V2 not coming? Mmm....that's definately sad news. But, it sounds as though if sales do pick up and there are extened times when sales are good that the next part of the series could go to DVD. If anyone's grabbing the comic, tell them about the DVDs as well. In a related (not really) thought has anyone else that ordered through Amazon found that the deliver date is in July? :(
Reno
Now, now! That's your friend's genetic makeup you're insulting.

so I'm guessing even If the comic does super well, that wouldn't even make a dent in Disney reconsidering that..*sigh*..
Starlioness

It's not just a rumor. Greg said himself that, due to poor sales of S2V1, there is currently no plan to release the rest of the series. Sucks, I know. He said that season one did fine, but the higher price tag combined with complacency on the part of the fans (myself, I know I just sort of assumed that, once we got the first half of season 2, the second was a given) have thwarted the sales. Then he kept repeating the same three words: SPREAD THE WORD!
