Sorry for the double post..."The 4400" does have chapter breaks.

Regarding earlier comments about season 2 volume 1 being hard to find: I looked at several Best Buy and Target stores here on the release date, but they didn't have it. I ordered a copy from amazon and found a copy at a Best Buy in Kansas City a little later.

Welcome, FoxFan1234!

The voice actress for Fox was Laura San Giacomo. She may be most well-known for her role as Maya Gallo in "Just Shoot Me" but you can check out her imdb credits here:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000624/

Greg has said that the reason she's not credited is on the advice of her agent at the time:

"Laura's representation (NOTE: NOT LAURA herself) felt that it could damage her career to have her name appear in the credits of an animated television series. We tried to change the reps mind, but no go. Nowadays, I doubt it would be an issue. And I want to stress that Laura was nothing but wonderful, working on the show. A real pleasure. Also she and Fox gave birth at more or less the same time."

A random comment on a discussion a while back on chapter breaks on the DVDs (I've been away a while and am still catching up): I've been watching the DVDs for "24" season 1 and "The 4400." There are no chapter stops in either set.

Abby

Can anyone tell me who did the voice of Fox/Janine Renard? I've read every single cast credit of every single episode, & for some reason the voice actress is never listed. Additionally, can anyone tell me why her name is never listed?

KING COBRA> "Well, I saw it and loved it. But then I am a film fan (especially horror movies) by nature, so I'm inclined to love most films, no matter how bad other ppl say they are. All that matters to me is how I think of them."

You're a very different kind of film fan. I'm a Film Fan, and I go to film school, and I can honestly say that you could not pay me to go see a sequel to a remake of a film I don't think should have been made in the first place.

Everyone has different tastes, but I find that most film fans, myself included, tend to not love most films, but be critical of most films. We have some very high standards for movies. In the past few years, I have been called a film nazi a few times for trashing popular mainstream movies I thought were crap.

Hell, I remember a few years back, Greg Weisman posted a list of movies he hated, and I thought to myself. "Finally, someone else who hates those movies." Those movies being: E.T., Jurassic Park, Gladiator, and Independence Day. Of course, there are many more movies that are well loved that I despise, like Titanic, the Scream series, Richard Donnor's Superman, and, christ I could be here all day if I kept naming movies I didn't like.

I was recently called pretentious because I said I would rather watch the Godfather Trilogy any day over Star Wars. Not to bash the original Star Wars trilogy, despite Lucas' special editions and the crappy prequels, the original trilogy is still fun, and are classics. But, if I had to choose a weekend to marathon on either series, the Godfather wins out.

I think one of the reasons gargoyles didn't sell well is because there was no advertising and it was hard to find. The Major stores didn't even carry it (target, ciruit city, best buy ect) at least not in my area.

Plus, I called the comic shop in my town, and they don't get Gargoyles. The only one in my state listed on the SLG website is miles and miles away. So I have to order from Amazon after all.

my comment is this sir and i hope i am addressing he who can resolve this. which is this season 2part 2 and season 3 and so on, i read that they were not going to be put out on DVD because the firdst two didnt sell enough copies. well sir i can understand that this may cause some problrms for you but i believe i speak for all of the gargoyle fan when i say you sholdnt punish everyone due to bad sells. i for one have been waiting anxiously for the next installment. and sir im not some basement nerd but this show brings out the kid in me, i grew up watching this show. thank you for your time

Well, I don't think that Xanatos manipulated the Canmores during the events in "Hunter's Moon", certainly. (The obvious problem with exposing them and then taking them into his home is that his helicopter was seen taking the clan away to the Eyrie Building, and I seriously doubt that Xanatos would consider it to his advantage to have a lot of rumors floating around concerning his sheltering a set of extremely unpopular "monsters".) But I certainly doubt that his motives in taking them in was entirely altruistic or based on simple gratitude over Goliath coming to his aid in "The Gathering".

Of course, one drawback towards his finally having the gargoyles back in his home is that his superiors in the Illuminati have gotten a little too interested in their presence....

Greg recently answered a question from Todd that was pretty interesting to me. What really gave me pause was when Greg wrote: "Kinda like the way things turned out at the end of Hunter's Moon, you know?"

Did Xanatos somehow direct events to get the gargoyles exactly back where he wanted them? Maybe? Intrigueing.

Does he really think of himself as Hudson, though? How closely do the Gargs actually idendify with their names? The Avalon Gargs would, but would the Manhattan clan really feel a close identity with their names?
Vaevictis Asmadi

I hate to come to the defense of TGC, but dreams are weird. Havn't we all had dreams that combine elements from all areas of our lives. People from work, people from our youth, people we are dating all mixed together. I don't think it is such a glitch that Hudson dreamed of hearing his own name. I mean, that name idenifies him now. He surely thinks of himself as Hudson, it is only natural that people talking to him in his own dream would call him Hudson.
It's not like it was a flashback to the 10th century and someone actually called him Hudson.

Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]
"Toilet out of order. Please use floor below." - Sign in public restroom stall.

Harvester of Eyes: Despite the glitch in the episode with hudson dreaming about hearing his own name back in the 10th Century when he didn't have one - "The Dying Of The Light" is still my Favorite of the 12 non Greg W. Goliath Chronicles episodes. I don't know if it was Robbins figuring out that Hudson was a Gargoyle. Or Angela approaching the injured members of PIT at the Hospital and talking to them. Sure it had some flaws, like Hudson gliding inside the hospital for one - but I don't know, I still liked the ep for some odd reason. Sure it could have been written a lot better but I liked the concept.
Wingless

HARVESTER - Isn't that "shoot the messenger" mentality? I mean, Bishansky wasn't the one who wrote the episode, or that line, so why should you be angry at him? I doubt that he approved of that part any more than you did.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Wingless: Yeah, that was the approximate quote. But I too only saw it once (and that was on Jetix two years ago). Me, I'm still angry at Greg B. for reminding me of how the episode began. I've heard people try to write it off as the fact that Hudson was dreaming in the modern world, after he got his name, but I still don't consider that an excuse.

Vaevictis Asmadi - I'm sorry if the tone of my response to you sounded accusatory, it's that typically newbies flood Ask Greg with the same questions over and over. I've made some of the mistakes - see the question about learning about the Owen/Puck duality. In the time after I asked that question, I've learned about recording history (aka characters tell you what's going to happen) vs story-telling (aka you tell the characters what they are going to do). I personally think recording history is a much easier task than story-telling once you get to know the character's well enough and understand their motivations.

Bronx's Battle Etiquette> I guess I base my assumption that Bronx would not maul a real human the way he did Coyote on a couple of things. Bronx has been shown to have a strong sense of smell and tracking abilities, so I'm guessing he knew pretty early on that Coyote was not human. The big thing, though, is that we have never seen Bronx do damage on this scale to a person or gargoyle in any other fight. In fact, the only other time I can recall him attacking anything with comparable vigor was in "The Hound of Ulster" with Crom-Cruach (thanks to Todd for providing the spelling of the banshee's attack mode in his episode commentary), and that was a very large fey monster form. Of course, the "real world" reason Bronx never tears anyone else's face off is because BS&P would have a fit. But if we're looking for explanations within the world of the show, I find it tough to believe that Bronx would only succeed in causing serious damage the one time he faced off with what turned out to be a robot if he actually goes for the jugular every time. So maybe Bronx was taught to fight a little more defensively, to cause severa physical harm only as a last resort. Or maybe he was taught that if you smell metal (meaning armor in a 10th century context), it's OK to bite down a bit.

Warcrafter, I'm sorry to hear your life is unhappy right now. I hope things get better for you.

Todd, you have an interesting point. I wasn't thinking of Gargoyles being created through magic by other beings, but being inherently magical the way that the Third Race are. I think they evolved from will-o-the-wisps or something, but they are capeable of love, fear, hate, joy, jealousy, conspiracies, and whatever else. Or at least, that is my impression. But they are also inherently magical. Not just that they can perform magic but they have magic powers like shapeshifting.

Say Todd, do you still have the ability to delete inappropriate questions in the queue? When I was reading it I came across some genuine spam, like "why does pop go flat" and "why aren't my African greys laying eggs" that I thought you should know about. Not that I'm accusing you of falling down on your job, at all. I'm just trying to help.

B&CF> If you are still wondering about the shirts, I got this message:

I have a lot going on besides my health issues (combative divorce, selling of family home, moving, trying to keep custody of my children.... I could go on). I know that isn't an excuse but if you feel this is a rip-off or no longer wish to wait (I know I personally wouldn't want to wait this long), I'll gladly refund your money right now.

I know this wait has been ridiculously long and inexcusable. My life is a living hell right now, and if it will make everyone happy to have their money back, I'll be glad to oblige. My house is currently in boxes as I am being kicked out of it by my husband so it can be sold. I can't give you a date when I can ship the shirts and no longer wish to hear people calling me a rip off and saying I should be healed from several (not just one) surgeries to remove cancer (the same sort of cancer that killed my grandmother) in mere months.

In all honesty... that's the best I can offer you right now. I'm sorry to have let you down so horribly.

An answer to one of Vaevictis's questions that I hadn't paid enough attention to earlier, over why Greg Weisman made the gargoyles a "natural race" instead of created by magic.

I think that the reason for this is that it would have made magic too powerful in the Gargoyles Universe if it had been capable of creating a species capable of the love, hate, hopes, fears, loyalties, jealousies, vengeance, curiosity, etc. that gargoyles display, a species as capable of those feelings as humans are. And I honestly don't believe that even Oberon could produce something like that. The closest that magic can come to creating life in the Gargoyles Universe, I believe, are those occasions when somebody animated a statue, such as Raven with the totem beasts in "Heritage" or Oberon with the statues in "The Gathering Part Two", and there the animated objects remained wood or stone or whatever they'd originally been made of, couldn't speak, and displayed only a simple level of programming, equivalent to that of, say, one of the Steel Clan or Halcyon Renard's cybots. Beings capable of the thoughts and feelings that Goliath, Demona, Hudson, the trio, Angela, and the rest display are things that I don't think any magic, human or Third Race, could ever create.

Todd Jensen

Yeah, it has to be 1 hour=1 day. Besides it being in the episode (thanks for pointing it out to me) that adds up to ~40 years=1000 years, which makes the Gargs there biologically 20, like Greg said. I'll just assume that when he said the month=year thing, that he made a mistake. If it was 1 month=1 year, they'd all be biologically 40.

Do you know if Season 2 Volume 2 is coming out? If not is there any other ways of getting the episodes?
Chris

Here's how the conversions break down:

1 Avalon hour = 1 real world day = 24 real world hours
1 Avalon day = 24 Avalon hours = 24 real world days
24 days = 3 weeks and 3 days

1 year = 365 days
365 real world days = 365 Avalon hours
365 hours = 15.2 days

So for just over 2 weeks on Avalon, a year passes in the real world. Now for the physics majors in the room: Using Einstein's theory of general relativity, calculate the speed at which Avalon must be moving to create this 1:24 time dilation. ;)

OK, here's a question. Skimming some of the Avalon archive, Greg declares that one hour on Avalon is a day on Earth. That's a 1:24 ratio.

But then much further down, he states a ratio of one month to one year, which is 1:12. It can't be both, so which is it? I'm really confused. I'd like to calculate how much time will have passed on Avalon in the year 2198 (from year 1996) but I can't.

Sorry for the double post, but Greg just answered a few questions at Ask Greg and corrected someone who said that Tom returned every 100 years to find Goliath and said that Tom actually returned every 100 years to see if the world was safe for gargoyles. Vaevictus: I would guess that if they don't wash their clothes, turning to stone might do something to them. Otherwise, after a few months, everyone in the 23rd Precinct probably would have been wondering where that smell was coming from.

Ed: Maybe the Loch Ness gargoyles evolved a system similar to moderm amphibians. They have lungs, but they can also breathe through their skin.

Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75@gmail.com]
"We don't care whether or not we care." -Mola the Ancient One.

According to the wikipedia, Hudson smelled like leather and concrete. I suppose the concrete smell was Gargoyle body odor. Although, since Greg says that they turn into a stone-like organic compound instead of real stone, they probably don't smell like concrete. Then again, concrete is made of limestone, which is fossile material... I'm not a geologist.
Vaevictis Asmadi

Cool questions. :) Wasn't there a TGC that made a comment about how Jeffrey Robbins worked out Hudson was a gargoyle from his smell? I always thought that was quite an amusing idea. I'm probably misremembering it.

Why would the Loch Ness gargs be able to breathe underwater though? Although some of the other gargoyles have slightly different characteristics, that would be quite a big biological change, moreso even than Zafiro's lack of legs. On the other hand, I suppose there could be a non-biological explanation for it (as with the sun amulet).

Ed
"It's important that everyone remain calm." -- Matt Bluestone, "Nightwatch"

The short versions of my questions:

Can Loch Ness Gargoyles and Beasts breathe underwater?
Why did you choose to make the Gargoyles an entirely "natural" species instead of being magical?
4.a. When Gargoyle babies hatch, do they suddenly burst out of their eggshells in the evening, just like Gargoyles burst out of stone sleep, or do they hatch more slowly?
b. When birds lay eggs, occasionally one is "bad" or miscarried or whatever, and doesn't hatch. Does this happen to Gargoyles? c. And if so, do they hold a Wind Ceremony for the eggs that don't hatch?

5. I have the impression that Gargoyles do not need to bathe because they shed their skin every evening. But what about their clothes? Does the stone sleep combined with the Spell of Humility somehow clean their clothes every evening, or do Gargoyles wash their clothes? Even if their body is self-cleaning, clothes would still get dirt and mud and dust on them from external sources. If Demona has been wearing that same outfit for 1000 years, it probably really needs a wash!

And: Since Avalon Gargs can potentially have more than 3 eggs per couple, will they eventually (like, in 1000 or more years earth time) "max out" their home and start emigrating, thereby adding to/bolstering clans in the mortal world, or creating new clans?

Well, the only thing I wanted to ask that has been asked before is, what do other clans look like? Greg keeps saying that he doesn't want to "tie the artists' hands" but I can't imagine that he hasn't got any preferences or ideas at all, that he lets the artists decide everything. He seemed fine with saying that most Guatemalans are snakey like Zaphiro. That's the sort of general answer I'm hoping for, but I'd like to try to ask in a way that makes it clear I'm not asking for specifics.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Vaevictis Asmadi: I think it's opened for commenting on the DVDs, comics or Gatherings, and otherwise closed to allow Greg time to catch up. If you hang around until November when the new comic is released, I expect it will open up. :) (Out of curiosity, what do you want to ask?).

Sorry for double-posting here.

I know you guys want to remind newcomers to read the old answers before asking new questions. I guess I'm bothered that the tone of your posts seemed accusatory to me.

I know there's a huge backlog and I'm assuming Greg or Gorebash, or whoever's in charge of it, won't open Ask Greg to questions until Greg wants it to be open. I'm just wondering if this is a regularly scheduled occurance and if so, does anybody know the regular schedule for re-opening.

To make this post more worthwhile, is it OK if I respond to something from the archives? In August, Matt wrote:
"I've made a lot of custom gargoyles figures. I had pretty much all the figures to begin with and then I purchased a lot of figures and parts off eBay a few years ago. I'd have to pull out the toys to remmeber everything I made, but I'm sure I made at least Angela, Thailog, my own Coldstone, Zafiro, Boudicca, Ophelia, Griff, a random Ishimuran gargoyle, and a random London gargoyle (based on a bull). I think I also just did a bunch of head/wing swaps and repaints to create several random Scottish gargoyles. Oh yeah, and I made Demona's CoS 2nd in Command guy with the breastplate."

Dude, I would love to see your custom figures, Matt! Is there any chance you will photograph them sometime and show them online?

Vaevictis Asmadi

Hey guys, I very carefully read all the archives on the subjects that I have questions about. I'm not just waiting to ask "when will Season 2 Vol 2 come out?" I have actual questions. Please don't assume that I'm carelessly spouting questions that have already been answered. Please don't assume that I'm ungrateful to Greg for answering the questions or enjoy backlogging him.

I just wanted to know what the schedule is and if anyone knows what the plans for the site are. That's all. Please don't get angry at me. It is not fair.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Vaevictis Asmadi>I made that same mistake when I first started coming in here. Then I found that my question to ask greg had been asked like 500 times. So I just started asking my questions in here first and if no one could anser it Id go to ask greg.

I just find that the show has way to much similarity to x-men etc. Hopefully the plotline will open up and change that in future episodes.

Vaevictis Asmadi - I don't want to sound rude, but, before you consider wanting to submit a question, have you looked at the sheer size of the current backlog? Right now, it's 493 questions. I'm hoping the submit button stays disabled until either 1)the next issue of the comic comes out or 2)right before the gathering starts so that the backlog can be cleared. If you have a question about the tv series, asking the question here would probably get you a much, much faster than submitting it to Ask Greg.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happenned to simplicity

Does Greg stop accepting questions every year, and then open it again at the start of the next year? Or do you think he is waiting to open Ask Greg until he finishes the 2005 questions?
Vaevictis Asmadi

I can't remember the last time I dropped in, but it's been a while (April?), so I'm lost on what's happening for the Gargoyles franchise.

Last official news I heard about the DVD was that bit posted at TVshowsOnDVD.com--Greg saying that if we could get ten thousand or so people to buy the Season 2 Volume 1 DVDs, Volume 2 would pretty much be guaranteed a release. Is that still the status, or has Greg hinted that Volume 2 has better chances as we get closer to December?

Issue #2 of the comic--I'm guessing it's just late is all ?

Anything else exciting happen since the spring? I'll catch up on the comment room archives when I have time later today in order to get all knowledgable and not ask questions that cause the regulars here to repeat themselves, but for now I just wanted a quick rundown of what's up.

Just like to say congrats to Greg and helpers for clearing the '500 questions left' milestone on 'Ask Greg'. The 2005 barrier is fast coming up too... if it's cleared before 19 November '06, Greg will have made up time on two years ago (were he cleared 2002 on 16/11/04). The last time Greg was completely caught up is apparently 25 September 2000 (I love the search feature).

This pointless trivia brought to you by the Nerdgasm Company for Wayward-- no, seriously, it really is an incredible commitment for Greg to answer question after question, night after night with only quite rare breaks for... what? Nearly a decade? So big thanks to Greg, and of course, Gore and Todd.

Buy NerdGasm wear and you too can look like the seventeenth trooper from the right in scene 59 in Star Wars, meaning of course the original motion picture, not a special edition or director's cut because that trooper was obscured by a CGI image in those, we mean just 'Star Wars' in 16:9, but not fullscreen because it got cut out of that too. The NerdGasm company and its chairman have no particular affiliation with the extra who suffered from that cruel and unreasonable cut. None whatsoever. No sir.

Vaevictus: It's not necessary. I was throwing out a discussion topic--IF there were garg-beasts that resembled animals OTHER than canines and YOU were in charge, what kind of animal would you pick for your "new" beasts?
Stormy

Vaevictis Asmadi-- re: Hound of Ulster: Mmm, the parallel between Culann's hound ("Hound of Ulster" is actually a refference to Cuchulainn, himself, not the hound he killed or the replacement he raised) and gargoyle beasts is tricky. It's not too far of a stretch to interpret the hound as a garg-beast for the purposes of "Gargoyles." The hound slain by Setanta (Cuchulainn's original name) wasn't too far out of the ordinary, other than it being a particularly large and fierce guard dog. However, the personality is certainly there, so it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say the hound *was* a garg beast in the "Gargoyles" universe, but in terms of appearances, all evidence points to hound-like, so you'd probably be looking at another garg-beast with a more canine appearance. The same could probably be said for the pup Cuchulainn raised to replace the one he slew.

Same with Fu-Dogs, which are more canine and leonine in origin of appearances, rather than equine.

.... I think I had a finer point to this when I dipped into my knowledge of Irish mythology, but at nearly 3am, I've forgotten what it was. :B

Addendum: Regarding the discussion on downloading retro titles for the Wii. You only pay ONCE to download the game. Once you save it locally (on a hard drive, memory card, etc), that's that... you DO NOT have to pay every time you want to play it thereafter. There's also some word that if you download and then delete a game (by accident or whathaveyou), you won't be charged to download it again (probably because you'll have a master account that keeps a record of what you've paid to download, etc). I'll need to re-check and verify my sources on that last bit, however.

Demonskrye> I don't think Bronx went for the face on Coyote 1.0 in "Leader of the Pack" (I'm assuming this is the episode you're thinking of) because he figured out it was a robot. I'm thinking he figured out the head was the most vulnerable spot for attack. And just why exactly is it NOT ok to maul a human's face when involved in a life or death battle?
Actually, going back and watching the episode, when Bronx, Lexington, and Brooklyn first fight the Pack at the Pack Media Studios, it looks like Bronx goes for Hyena's face, as well as Dingo's. I'd say Bronx's first choice of attack is to go for the face/neck/head area.

Vaevictis> What exactly about her made you think of Boudicca as cat-like? I can't think of any of her traits that would point towards felinity.

I think the Bronx hates robots thing started way back in Awakening when the Steel Clan attacked Bronx and Hudson. Ever since then Bronx has not been too keen on robots, and it doesn't surprise me that he can sense (probably through smell) what is a robot. I think unless Bronx's friends were very careful, Bronx would attempt to attack even a friendly robot. Look how much growling he does at Coldstone, even when Othello or Desdemona is in control.

Is it really necessary for Garg-Beasts to be equine, though? Equine statues are pretty easily explained by regular horses. I'd expect them to be the inspiration behind myths, like the Fu-Dog or the Hound of Ulster.

In Egypt there is a mythcal creature called a Sta which has a lion-like body and the head of a snake. There are similar creatures called Sirrush or Mishrush in Babylonian myth, plus the ram-headed and hawk-headed sphinxes in Egypt. I think those creatures would be Garg-Beasts. In Southeast Asia there are dragon-like, crocodile-like beasts called Hayra that might be Garg-Beasts as well. I've got a whole list of animal-like mythical creatures around the world, but I can't seem to find it at the moment, or I'd mention some from Great Britain.

Beasts smarts> I actually put a question into Ask Greg ages ago about gargoyles beast intelligence. It was long enough ago that I got a response. Greg indicated that they're pretty darn smart; as Bronx has shown, they can understand somewhat abstarct concepts like "help" and other less than straightforward commands. However, according to Greg, if you told Bronx "Hide in the shadows for 20 minutes and then go find Goliath", he'd get confused. Even taking the time aspect out of it (since I'm guessing Bronx doesn't own a watch), I imagine he'd be equally confused by "Hide in the shadows, wait until the fighting's over, then go find Goliath". To be honest, though, I don't know if it's the idea of delaying the action or the fact that the command contains multiple steps that would go over Bronx's head.

Thay can also clearly take in a situation and decide on a course of action for themselves. If Thailog blasts a wall and the rubble falls on Brooklyn, Bronx will probably either attack Thailog or go dig Brooklyn out of the rubble without being told. He can also determine well before anyone else that Coyote is a robot AND reason that it's OK to maul a robot's face where it wouldn't be OK to do the same to a human. I think the limit of his thinking is that he needs to be told what to do in more complex situations. If Brooklyn and Lex hand't instructed him to bust out of his cage in "Enter MacBeth", I doubt he would have understood that they were diverting power from his cage's electrified bars to allow him to escape.

Demonskrye
Do our taxes, Bronx.

I would like to see horse-like gargoyle beasts. Particularly in Europe, there is a lot of equine statuary and reliefs. However, the horse has also been important to a lot of other cultures (For example, the Asian culture which buried life-size statues of horses and riders), the post-European-contact Plains Indians, the Middle Eastern nomad tribes, etc and was therefore depicted in statuary and art.

The one rule I would make is that unless a Gargoyle horse were very stocky, it wouldn't be able to carry a large gargoyle like Goliath, Broadway or Hudson. I think Brooklyn would be the uppermost limit of its ability to carry weight.

Stormy

Yeah, I read that. I know Zaphiro supposedly has legs, either vestigial or hidden under the skin. And if you look at Lex, he does have wings, they just don't have fingers and they usually appear to be growing out of his armpits.

But a snakey beast would drag itself around with its front legs. It would make more sense to have no legs than just two, then.

Hey I just remembered, there is a store near my house that sells comics. I'm going to call them and see if they have Gargoyles. I'm worried if I wait that back issues won't be availible.

In other news, my cat needs to have a tooth pulled, poor kitty. :(

HofEyes> Maybe this question in Ask Greg could be useful. I only remembered it because it gave me some serious information into gargoyle and gargoyle beast evolution.

Question received on Sun, October 01, 2000 05:09:32 PM
Skylar writes...
1. When I asked if there are any Gargoyle beasts whith wings you said they involved without. So if it is all an evolving thing and if there are only two kinds of gargoyles (the human like and the beast like), how does it come, that some gargoyles look totally different to the others and seem to have other bones , a much different skelleton?
For example Lexington looks much different (for example his bones in his wings) and a much more distinct example is Zaphiro. He seems to have no legs at all.

Greg responds...
1. I think I said "evolved". You've never seen Zafiro's skeleton. The differences are superficial. The limb count is the same. Even Beasts , may have small vestigal wing bones , I suppose. But that doesn't mean there are flying beasts .

My garg beast would have to be part zebra. Haha It would be like a horse a small horse but have stripes on it. The stripes would be two colors not black and white hahaha.

One thing I've always wondered is that some snakes have two very small stubs on their underbellies, so small they're barely noticable, that mark where their legs once were. I'm wondering if the beasts have similar barely-noticable markings on their backs that denote where their wings once were before they started down a seperate evolutionary path from other gargoyles.

Hey, this thing resets on *Monday*? Weird.

Thanks for clarifying GargBeast intelligence, that's one of the things I wanted to ask.

Bronx does seem doggy to me, but Boudicca struck me as more feline, at least in appearance.

It would be great to see what Beasts look like in the other clans, besides just the Scottish clans. But do you really think they are just as variable as the Gargoyles? I can't imagine a Beast with a snake body like Zaphiro.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Right, Beasts are at least as intelligent as chimps, gorillas and dolphins, and probably more so. Do they sometimes have dog-like qualities, maybe, but I think it is more accurate to say they have gargoyle-like qualities which makes sense given they are Gargates.
Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]

Buth then, GREG himself help make Bronx Dog-like. Who wrote him to be chewing on a bone? who shaped him to lie by Hudson's feat?

If I'd be shaping a beast, I'd definatly choose the look of the Japanese one, the red one. Nad it would be very intelligent.

I don't think that Beast are smart enough to be considered wingless mute gargoyles (IE Scooby Doo), however; They must posess some stupidity for lack of a better term.

Remember when Elisa Told Bronx to "hit it"? Knock down the fence? He knew exactly what she meant.

And when he was separated from the group in Ultster? He knew he had to find them, and did what he could to find them.

Even still, when roary was trapped in the ... chasm? canyon? Small gorge? Whatever it was, Bronx knew to give him a ride up without being asked.

He knows what he's told. IF I told my neighbors dog to "protect my home," it would act jsut like a dog. Bronx, on the other hand, would "Protect my home".
'
When Goliath told him Protect Elisa, that's what he did when Demona came in.

Definatly smatter than a dog or even a dolphin, I'd wager.

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

Beasts> I don't think anyone is coming totally out of left field in thinking that the gargoyle-beasts we've seen so far have a good amount of canine-like traits. A lot of us base our opinion of gargoyle-beasts on Bronx since he was the first we met and the one who got the most screen time. Bronx has a build and some facial feature resembling those of a bulldog. His vocalizations all sound like those of a canine, including, barks, growls, whines, and howls. He has exhibited dog-like behaviors, such as travking by scent, affectionate licking the face of other clan members, and (I think) wagging his tail when he's happy. We also have Goliath refering to him as a watchdog. Puck transforms Bronx into a dog and Oberon makes Boudicca appear as dog to the general public, suggesting that Oberon's Children think of gargoyles beasts as dog like. Granted, Boudicca has virtually no facial resemblance to a dog and the case might not have been as strong if she had been the first gargoyle beast we met. But we do get to see Oberon using her for tracking purposes, again, a task usually associated with dogs.

This does not necessarily mean that I think all gargoyle beasts look like dogs or act like dogs. I imagine Fu-Dog will resemble the Chinese fu dog (click my name for some picture), which was apparently a combination of native Chinese dogs and descriptions of lions, which are not indigenous to China. Considering the diversity of appearence in gargoyles around the world, I can only imagine that gargoyle beasts are similarly diverse in appearence.

Demonskrye
Heel, Bronx.

Beasts> I sometimes wonder if WE are projecting these dog-like traits on to the Beasts because that makes sense to us. Beasts are so different from dogs and they are so different in their relationship to gargoyles as compared to humans and dogs. Does Bronx growl? Sure. Is he loyal? Sure. But Goliath is loyal and growls and I wouldn't call him esspecially dog-like.
But of course, even Goliath refered to Bronx as the Clan's watchdog. Maybe he was saying that for Hakon's benefit. I dunno. Beasts are clearly more intelligent than a dog, they are much more closely related to gargoyles than humans are to dogs. Stuff to consider.

But I suppose to respond directly to Stormy's comment, I think physically and behaviorally we would get a wide range of Beasts types. We have really only seen a lot of Bronx. Boudicca hasn't got a lot of play, and the Ishimuran Beasts was just a background character. Given the level of Beast intelligence it wouldn't surprise me if they had a whole range of characters. Maybe some would be more aloof and quiet and we'd be tempted to call them cat-like. For that matter, think about the English Beasts. What are they? Horse-like? Lion-like?

It'll be interesting to see what Fu-Dog is like.

Gargoyle "beasts" are often canine or doglike (Bronx, Fu-dog). If you had a chance to create a gargoyle beast for the show that WASN'T canine or doglike, what sort of animal would you pick for it to resemble, and why?
