dee thompson, in case you venture into here: You won't get a response to your AskGreg question for weeks or months, and Greg may not be able to help you. I'd suggest these places to try to sell your stuff:

1) Post your items and links to their pictures in here. You might find some buyers.
2) eBay, although you'd be competing with some big auction houses with lots of cels. If you do put them on eBay, announce your auction in here since this board has the most hard-core fans who might be willing to buy. Heck, maybe you can sell through the auction house itself: http://www.universallive.com/
3) Find a local animation gallery and see what they'll pay for them. Two that seem reputable is http://www.vegalleries.com/ on the west coast and http://www.animationsensations.com/ on the east. If you live in the middle of the country, you might be out of luck for an in-person appraisal.
4) Maybe a local comic book/collector's shop, especially if they sell a lot of Gargoyles comics. But you may undersell there.

One more thing, since this was brought up earlier:

I'd love to see the "dust" settle a bit in the next 12 issues, and have some single-EPs thrown in, just for fun and character developing purposes. I'd rather see another 1-off story with 10 additional pages on one or two of the Gargs, than a 2,3 parter with heavy canon-stuff.

Also:
- a LOT of Brooklyns Timedancing thrown in randomly. :D I'm not entirely sure if we get to see the epic struggle of him in only 3 comics, and to further deepen that arc, I'd show some little things thrown in

- Broadway/Angela. I never was too much of a fan of the two being together, but it could really be interresting to see how Greg handles the idea of a relationship inside of the Clan. Watching over Manhattan and having to settle arguments sure has to be a tough job (and please, no talk bout the two of them being perfectly happy, a bit realism here would be lovely)

- Goliath/Elisa. Yah, sure, everybody wants this... But if you've allready got the potential...

- More of Coldstone and Coldfire. They're still favourites of mine.

I also wanted to add that i'm not, and never have been, a fan of the outside-Manhattan-Gargoyles. Sure, there are some, but I loved the way in the old days, when they were all isolated, kinda "the last ones left", and adding more and more Gargoyles from around the world makes it... kinda less special to me. So I'd rather like to see the story being centered than introducing more characters. (The London one's were cool with me though... so far they're the only "new" ones in the CB arc, and I hope it'll stay that way)

A little question for those who are up to date: When does the next SLG-issue come out??

I must admit that I am really looking forward for the TIMEDANCER storyarc to start. As of now, I've got no idea how Greg wants to fit it into 3 books... then again, 3 books are a lot.
I just can't wait for it to start - GARGOYLES then will finally (in my view) have become the broad, story-arc driven story Greg set out to make, with the Clan-arc, the TIMEDANCER and BAD GUYS.

Argh, I cannot wait.

I'll set out and try to fetch CLAN BUILDING Vol.1 next week. :) I was unable to catch most of the issues (except for the very first one), all sold out over here, so then there's a lot of catching up to do...

I believe the Mecha-Nation art was done by Vic Cook himself. I'll ask him when I see him at Comic Con. I'll also ask Cheeks if he's just doing character designs and whatnot.

Rebel - Yes, the Progeny art was done by the same guy who did the character designs for the Spectacular Spider-man. Have you seen his Teen Titans GO! comic pages? I really REALLY enjoyed his issue.

I can't wait 'til all the seasons are out for Avatar. I haven't seen more than a bit of it from the first season, but everyone says it's excellent. I might even do a blind buy, instead of just renting or borrowing, but...and maybe they'll do a complete series set eventually, but...maybe I should just wait for Blu-Ray for EVERYTHING from now on (exception: Gargoyles Season 2 Part 2 should it ever arrive). Have been holding off on buying any more live-action movies and TV shows since late last year, but I've still been buying animation on DVD. Classic cartoons, a few newer ones, and the newest Futurama movie last month. But having seen the Batman: Gotham Knight shorts on Blu-Ray on a good screen...wow (the visuals are more the reason to see it than the stories)...and I didn't know that Blu-Ray could help animated shows/movies as much as it can by dealing with the artifact/compression issues that often plague regular DVDs. So I guess I'm holding out for a time when I buy a decent set-up and a Blu-Ray player (a PS3, probably).

Greg/Vic may have asked Cheeks to do some quick character designs just for the Progeny promo. Or maybe he'll be the full-time penciller. If you know someone going to Comic-Con, you can have them ask since Greg is slated to talk about it. Otherwise, no one knows anything yet. We can see Cheeks' signature is on the Progeny art but not the Mecha-Nation art, which might be a clue. And yes, there are people who like his art style. Just to clarify...is the art in Mecha Nation and Progeny going to be in the same style as the art in the promo art?? I would assume it would be, but I'm not sure.

If it is, I'm a little disappointed. It's just like SSM (actually, it's the same guy, right?). I can understand why SSM needs a simplistic and stylized animation style, because of all the action, and for that reason I overlook the animation when I watch the show. But I don't see why a comic book needs a style like that. There are probably more frames in a single minute of animation from a TV show than there are panels in an entire comic book. So, I don't see why the art can't be more realistic and less simple/stylized.

Then again, I guess there are probably some people that just love this style and don't consider it a flaw. All a matter of opinion, I guess.

Anyway, Mecha Nation looks more interesting to me than Progeny. I don't know if I'll buy the comics, but I'll certainly buy the trades, at least of Mecha Nation.

Saw the Dark Knight at the midnight opening. It was great. The Joker was insane, and had some great dark humor. Heath Ledger did a great job. I couldn't believe it was really him.

I stood in line for 3 hours to see the movie. I wore my Gargoyles Hot Topic shirt and had someone say, "Hey! Is that Gargoyles? I watched that show when I was younger." It was a good way to talk about the comics.

I don't know about the Mecha Nation comic that Greg is having come out. It doesn't seem very interesting to me. But the Progeny one looked like I could give it a chance. It was more appealing in both the description and the drawings for it.

That ComixMix.com interview with Greg W. was great.

Had no idea Gargoyles was originally conceived as a superhero universe springboard/centerpiece. That could've been very cool. You guys have probably debated this to death over the years, but I gotta wonder why the show didn't last longer. I know some people who didn't watch it because of Ninja Turtles fatigue (or they never liked that series either), so maybe if TMNT had never existed, a story about a race of hidden warriors might've been more appealing and seemed more fresh for the majority of cartoon viewers when Gargs came along. Or was it because the toys didn't sell well enough ? Or was it purely because of the changing of the guard at Disney ? Nah, 'cause if the show was doing really well in the ratings, new Disney execs would still wanna hold onto the property.

I didn't know that they knew that Lex was gay while the show was still running, I thought that was a decision/realizatoin Greg came to in the late `90s or something (it was only confirmed though a few years ago, right? They mentioned that it happend at a Gathering in the interview, but not what year. But I remember talking about it with you guys on the old version of this board not too long ago, so I know it was in the 2000s).

Here's hoping we continue to get more Garg comics. I'll buy the two trade paperbacks for "Clan-Building" when the second inevitably comes out, I don't mind owning the issues AND the collections for this franchise. I rarely double up like that. I'll buy one for "Bad Guys" too, if they release one (will definitely hang onto the issues though if they don't reprint the covers in color in the collection--they usually don't for black and white trades). A potentially cool incentive for picking up the "Bad Guys" trade would be them trying it out in color...New fans/readers would have a nice choice to make too--track down the issues if you're a purist for original versions (or if we recommend it 'cause the b&w ends up looking better/more appropriate to the story), or just get the trade.

Oooh, or maybe they'll do one big all-inclusive hardcover for "Clan-Building", that'd be sweet. Yeah, I know, getting way ahead of things here...

Saw "The Dark Knight" last night... and I'm still left speechless by it. It was awful what happened to Heath Ledger, but... what a fantastic legacy to leave behind.


As far as Demona is concerned, am amusing thing happened to me back in April. My friend, his fiancee, and myself had been making our way through the first 65 episodes of Gargoyles. That particular night a few months ago, we watched "The Reckoning." I'd never really told my friends about a lot of the Demona fanfiction out there, so they don't really know about the fandom being split over Angela "curing" Demona vs. Demona remaining humanity's enemy.

So, anyway, we hear Goliath's closing dialog about new beginnings, the episode ends, and then there's silence for a few seconds. Then my friend says, "no, I bet she's going to continue to be an evil bitch." This is why I love my friends. ( ;

Long story short, I don't begrudge anyone their opinions, but I'm also looking forward to the return of canon Demona, as well. It should be... interesting.

One of my favorite parts of the interview was Greg explaining why it was so important that Goliath and his clan not be the only gargoyles around; if they were, then the only possible future for the Gargoyles Universe would be one where, about fifty years down the line, the only gargoyle left would be a (presumably) still genocidal Demona. That would mean that all of Goliath's hopes for peace, someday, between humans and gargoyles would be futile; even if the humans learn the error of their ways, the lesson would come too late.

In other news, found this interview with Greg; he mentions how one of the original plan for "Gargoyles" was for it to spring board Disney's own version of a superhero universe akin to Marvel or DC. Yeah, I saw a midnight showing of The Dark Knight as well...Greg B. said it--insane. We'd pre-ordered our tickets weeks ago, but only for a regular theatre because the IMAX showings sold out more quickly in Toronto. We scouted out the IMAX screening that was happening at the same time after we'd secured out seats in the regular theatre, thinking that we could maybe grab four seats if people didn't show up for the tickets they'd paid for (happens sometimes at hyped premieres) but the IMAX was packed. Not a single seat empty. I'll probably see it again before it's out of theatres, and if I do I'll try for IMAX.

The Complete Series set of Batman: The Animated Series appeals because it's the only piece of the DC Animated Universe I don't own (well, except for side=story types like Static Shock and The Zeta Project, which haven't gotten season sets yet). I borrowed it off a friend and never saw the four volumes for nice and cheap, so I hoped they'd do one of these eventually. My only beef is that they aren't including the two animated films that take place within the series ("Mask of the Phantasm" places somewhere around the beginning of Volume 2, "Sub-Zero: Mr. Freeze" after Volume 3 and sort of a conclusion to the old look of the series, before the re-design and the new Robin). I guess they could've included "Mystery of the Batwoman" as well if they were gonna go a movie-inclusive route, but then again that one was rejected by a lot of fans and it took place during Season 2 of Justice League anyway. "Return of the Joker" will belong in a Batman Beyond complete boxed set if they ever do one.

I wonder if they'll ever do a Complete DC Animated Universe set...Has ANY franchise with a coherent continuity ever been spread over that many shows like Batman/Superman/Batman Beyond/Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (and Static and Zeta, if you wanna include 'em) ? Besides Star Trek ?

Art on Greg's new project (keeping in mind it's just promo art) so far doesn't especially attract or repel me. It's fine. The first one (the non-Mech one) looks more appealing than the other. I'll check out the first volume of each in collected form.

Expectations/hopes for where the main Garg series might be headed...I guess it would be responsible to the plot to touch on the Quarrymen again, but I don't really care about them so far. I wanna see lots more of what's going on with Xanatos, even if it's just a page or two now and again in the background until his arc comes to the forefront again. I dunno who I wanna see more of from the main, original cast, but I guess I'm kinda feeling like Goliath and Elisa could take a backseat to the others for a while, even though I still see Goliath as the main lead and hope he remains that way for the majority of the series.

I'm cautiously optimistic to see Demona portrayed in the comic (with lines)...everything involving her in the cartoon was perfect...

If they turn out to be a part of the titular "Clan-Building", I can't wait to see how they meld with the existing Manhattan clan. They both have interesting and fun personalities and it'd be a shame to leave them behind in #13+. I suppose the people who saw the #7-9 radio play might know their fate, so I'll just go speculate here in the corner... on my own... alone....

I'm a big fan of the Superhero genre, so I was excited to hear about Progeny, but the promo art makes it look more like an updated fantasy, so I'm kinda iffy. Gargoyles is about as fantasy-oriented as I get. That's a lie, I also like the two Zelda games on N64. Mecha-Nation doesn't interest me at all, but I'm frequently wrong about things. :D

I'm really looking forward to the introduction of the newest gargoyles. :) I also look forward to seeing Demona in the comics. She's gotten, what, a whole three panels or so? Thus far, rather unsatisfying. Hah.

I have one particular reason for hoping that the comic will get renewed for at least another twelve issues: Castaway and the Quarrymen.

We aren't likely to see much more of them for the remainder of "Clan-Building", since #9 will be wrapping up the Stone of Destiny story (and presumably be set mostly in Britain, except for the scenes back in New York where Shari will be telling Thailog the remainder of the Stone's history), and #10 to #12 will be about Brooklyn's Timedancing and probably be mostly in the past (such as meeting Mary and Finella in 997). So if the comic is going to explore them further, it'll have to be after #12.

The glimpses we got of Castaway in #3, and "Bad Guys" #3, delighted me because they improved on the way that the "Goliath Chronicles" handled him. He might be still a madman, embarking on a pointless war of genocide against the gargoyles in order to avoid taking responsibility for what he did to his brother, but he's clearly a shrewd one. He takes care to avoid the PR problems of an overly zealous Quarryman mistaking trick-or-treaters for gargoyles. And look at how he handles his commercial in "Bad Guys" #3 - he makes the Quarrymen sound more like a kindly charitable organization there to help people get through tough times than like a hate group.

These scenes were a great antidote to the depiction in the "Goliath Chronicles", but they were only glimpses. I'm hoping for an entire story that will focus on the Quarrymen and their conflict with the gargoyles, as well as cameo appearances. And I hope that the comic lasts long enough to give us one.

Agreed, but even if not it'd both presumptuous and not presumptuous to take Greg's statement to mean we'll see these characters in future issues. Just because he said they didn't appear in 1-8 doesn't mean they will appear in 9-12 or even in the next hundred issues. On the other hand, Greg has said that he plans to get to everything eventually so I'd say the odds of seeing them in future stores is good.

The point is, there is not really any point to trying to read too much into Greg's responses, especially when they are smart-ass in nature.

I just wanted to note something from one of your previous question/answer entries. Laura aka 'ad astra' asked "about Titania and Oberon's son and daughter....Have we met them in some shape or form seemingly totally unconnected?" You answered "No. Not to my knowledge. (I thought I was sure.) I know who they are, but they did not appear in the first 66 episodes."

Here's my question. Have Oberon and Titania's son or daughter (Not Fox or Merlin, I mean the son and daughter Oberon and Titania had TOGETHER) appeared in some shape or form in the current issues of the comic series?

If I really want to be presumptious, I would say that Greg's qualification to the 1st 8 issues opens up the possibility of one of those children showing up in the remaining 4 issues, but I'm not even going to go there simply because that's way over stretching.

Thanks for posting that, Lumpmoose. Amazing, amazing news.

I hope the comics are well-supported, help sales of 'Gargoyles' and raise Greg's profile generally. But most of all I'm really excited to see Greg crack new stories and new universes (or is it just one universe with two comics?).

The descriptions are interesting. 'Mecha Nation' sounds pretty cool, a sort of twist on the old X-Men style thing, though I'm sure it will soon look different.

'Progeny' I have two reservations about. One is the title. I may get used to it but it just feels dull, unengaging. Great practice for sharp-witted comic store staff mind you: "could you order me 'Progeny'?"; "Buy me a drink first." I hope it's changed to something more striking.

And the other, lesser, issue is that as soon as I read it I instantly thought 'Hero By Night' -- and clearly the commenters on Newsarama did too. I would guess that Greg's never heard of or read the book and it's just an unfortunate side-effect of lots of writers fishing in a similar genre. Small wonder they're going to come upon similar ideas. But 'Hero By Night' is a cracking comic and seems to be being quite harshly treated. I feel a bit conflicted that 'Progeny' -- even though it'll no doubt end up feeling very different -- is going to move in so close in the superhero genre neighbourhood.

I'm a little surprised too that SLG are pursuing superhero franchises. Isn't that genre pretty packed? Or is this what Greg and Vic wanted to do? No word on format either except 'comic books' which I assume means 'singles' not graphic novels.

Oh well. I guess there'll be more answers in the next year or so. Roll on 2009.

It's cool to see that Slave Labor Graphics has forged a lasting relationship with Greg Weisman. Will definitely check out his two new comics, though I think this time I'll wait for the trades.

So many people on various sites, in reviews, on boards, talking about Spectacular Spider-Man. Gonna have to buy Season 1 on DVD when it's released then make a point of recording future seasons.

This is getting crazy. My brother who lost his job tried to become a car salesperson. He spent a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in training before being sent to the car dealership that he was going to work at. At that car dealership, he spent Monday through Thursday getting more training via computer courses. That Friday he sent out cold turkey to sell cars and nobody told him that he was supposed to work that weekend plus the car dealership made an error with direct deposit, which he didn't get corrected until Monday. Last week, he worked Monday through Friday, only sold 1 car, nothing more. Today, he got canned. Joy. I thought that he would given at least a couple of weeks out in the field trying to sell cars before they would can him. This ain't exactly fun times ahead.

I found an interesting book in a bookstore: a book on Windows: Millenium Edition. A sales clerk I saw said that she had recently seen a book for Windows 3.1 in another bookstore. Here, I thought people ordering books had some basis in reality.

Picking up some threads from last week:

80s Cartoons> It's tough to compare the television shows of any previous time (animated or not) with what we have now. The times were different, the rules were different, and the social mores were different. Limitations on what was allowed on TV have been around pretty much since TV came into being and cartoons were being censored even back when they were running in movies theaters before the feature film. But outright rules aside, societal and business concerns probably kept a lot of TV cartoons of the 80s from exploring some of the territory that shows of later decades would. Cartoons of the 80s were aimed pretty strictly at kids, young kids in particular. The idea of writing shows that could be enjoyed on multiple levels by multiple age groups was not really around at that time. (Even today, the cartoons that really try to talk up to kids and provide entertainment for kids, adolescents, and adults are vastly outnumbered by those that target a very specific single demographic.) Cartoons were more concerned with staying appropriate for children than broadening their appeal to the older set. That and selling toys. Quite a few shows in the 80s were made to help sell the toys that they were based on. Which meant that, in addition to wanting to keep kids and parents groups happy, animation companies needed to please a toy company which wanted to convince kids that the heroes of this property were the absolute best, ready to take on anything, always on the side of good, and victorious every time. Between these various pressure and that fact that animated shows with a continuing storyline were not very common at the time, creators didn't have a ton of space to tell stories that went much beyond simple good vs. evil. Animation-wise, what was going on in the 80s was pretty similar to what continues to happen today. Most animation is done overseas, usually with multiple studios working on any one series. Deadline and budget pressures contribute to how good the final animation ends up looking. The main difference is that a lot of the 80s cartoons used very realistic or complex designs that were extremely difficult to animate consistently. Starting with "Batman: The Animated Series", animation studios went for a more graphic look that was easier to reproduce accurately again and again, but it still didn't guarantee perfect animation every time. Look at "Gargoyles" without sentiment and you'll find any number of bad drawings or outright bad episodes.

The cartoons of the 80s largely are what they are and there are some definite stinkers in the bunch, but there are also some episodes that I enjoy watching to this day (even in cases where I never saw the show as a kid). In G1 "TransFormers" you have "Webworld," a post movie episode where the Decepticons decide Galvatron has become too irrational and bring him to the insane assylum planet for "treatment". Pre-movie, there's "Microbots", which has a decent overall plot, but is most notable for the Decepticons literally getting drunk on energon and Megatron rambling incoherently aout Cybertron. Jumping over to "G.I. Joe" we have a double whammy of multiparters with "There's No Place Like Springfield" and "Worlds Without End," which remain two of the most jaw-droppingly insane cartoons ever produced for kids even by today's standards. (I can explain what they're about if anyone is interested.)

And Greg B, thanks for not including the voice acting among the problems that plagued many 80s shows. I think it's the saving grace of many a series. Megatron may not have been allowed o act like a badass, but he did sound like one.

Effective Villainy> It is possible to have a believable and effective villain within certain constraints. I'm hesitant to use a comic book character like Doctor Doom as an example, since Marvel's stable of baddies goes through numerous writers who all treat the character somewhat differently and may or may not handle him or her well. Multiple, alternate, and long term goals are all important for an antagonist with limits. If your villain's only goals are to kill the hero or enslave/destroy the world, obviously he or she has to lose every time because the villain winning would mean the end of the series. Goals that don't directly involve the hero or goal that the hero may not even be aware of work well. If the villain's plan is more long term - something that requires a lot of work beforehand and a lot of small steps before putting the real plan into action, you can allow him or her to win a couple of battles, but ultimately lose the war. Multiple villains also helps on this front. You can have a couple of foes who pose less of a threat and allow your heroes to demonstrate how cool they are while keeping your big guns in reserve. This was part of the reasoning behind the human villains in "TransFormers Animated." The Autbots got to beat on them and defeat them regularly without too much trouble, while the Decepticons only showed up periodically. As a result, the Decepticons became real formidable foes who pose a huge challenge to the Autobots when they do make an appearance, Megatron in particular. I mean, Starscream JUGGLES Bumblebee, for crying out loud. End result, the Autbots still look heroic while the Decepticons retain their reputation as the robots to beat.

Blue Mug Productions> Would it be fair and correct to say that while the stories coming out of Blue Mug Productions are 100% separate from the Gargoyles universe, the two fictions do draw on similar inspirations and concepts, so that a fan of "Gargoyles" could be expected to find a lot to like about Blue Mug Productions?

I'm using that statement to assume issue #4 was sent to the Disney by the 16th of May. Friday was literally 8 weeks after that date. If a person decided to use the length of time for the approval process of bg #4 to estimate how long it will take garg #9 to get approved, that person would probably conclude that if issue #9 wasn't sent to Disney for approval by the week before the Gathering started, issue #9 won't make out in August. I'm not going to speculate on when issue #9 will come out because there simply isn't enough avail information - even if we knew the comic was sent to Disney.
