Comics canon doesn't necessarily apply to Young Justice. In Young Justice, White Martians are not evil. They are one of three "races" of the Martian species, and they are discriminated against by the Reds and Greens. Miss Martian inherits her skin tone from her White Martian father; her mother is a Green Martian and is Martian Manhunter's sister. Martian Manhunter's true form looks much like Miss Martian's true form, only larger and green. The form we know him best in is not his real one.

Sorry to bring that junk into the CR. I hope we get real answers soon.

Anthony> Considering that the DC Nation Twitter and Facebook page posted a question on what everyone thought of the episodes (they've subsequently been pulled, but you can still find evidence for them if you look), I'm quite certain that article is basically a conspiracy theory worthy of Matt Bluestone.

A lawsuit would explain the sudden pull of DC Nation. I don't know if this site is credible, but at it's an explanation. Article contains spoilers unfortunately as it's part of the explanation.

Hey #DCNation fans! Have you heard?? DC Nation will return in January with all new episodes!

Anthony Tini

Yeah I've noticed that too. But I think it also depends on perspective a bit. Looking at these two pictures, the eye only looks a little smaller on the Archmage than on Fox, at least to me:
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20061121185922/gargoyles/images/7/70/EyeOfOdin.jpg
http://s3d4.turboimagehost.com/t1/10787197_Archmage.jpg

I could easily imagine it covering a similar area on his chest on the second one. I think part of the problem is that the Archmage probably grew a bit because of the eye's power. But then again, so did Fox and Goliath.

Anyway, on the plus side, my Phoenix Gate is about the right size for Princess Elena to hide up her sleeve.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Arlo: Throughout the series-both the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate appear different sizes. Being magical talismans I suppose that's possible. The Eye in particular appears quite large when worn around the neck by the transformed Fox and Goliath-but seems small when on the Archmage's head.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

So my Phoenix Gate came in the mail today, and I'm giddy like a schoolgirl! It is a bit smaller than it looks in the picture, or on the series. I'd say it's about the size and shape of a sheriff's badge, but the design is very spot-on and looks very much like the gate in the series. I, of course, had to rewatch "Vows" once I got it, and I'm very pleased with the design. One nice touch is that they used genuine gold plating, so the shine looks very authentic, almost like a real piece of jewelry I would wear out if I was willing to subject myself to humiliation a bit more. It is thinner than I had expected, though, and the blue is a bit darker than in the series. But for $23.99 I can't complain.

One thing this made me notice while I was rewatching "Vows" is that in the last act, when Goliath, Young Demona, and Current Demona are all in 994 A.D. after the viking attack, there are a few scenes in which you see two Gates in the same shot - the one being held by Goliath, and the one being held by Demona. In a number of the shots, it looks like the back of the Gate Demona is holding is flat, whereas the one Goliath has has a small indent, and it even looks at one point like there are clasps on the back of it, on which to attach a chain for wearing it. This makes me wonder if Demona really did just go straight to pick up her younger self after disappearing from Goliath in the beginning of the second act. After all, she was standing, rather than gliding, when she reappeared to her.

For those who are wondering, the real life Gate has a flat back, like the one Demona had in that scene. I guess it needs to travel through the time stream with Demona in order to get those clasps.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Yeah. Since they do have new shows prepared they're not exactly in need of a new season of either YJ or GL. Hopefully that isn't the case. And I know I don't have to sign any petition.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

GLN> The main concern isn't that it's gone on hiatus, it's that it went on hiatus contrary to announced airing schedules and with only half a day's notice. And then they had the gall to announce its return in January as if they were doing us a big favour and we should chill, which is what ticked me off most of all. And if you don't want to sign the petition, that's fine, but this is getting a lot of response from fans and it'll be more effective to let them know we disapprove now than waiting three months.

Also, neither DC nor Cartoon Network have actually confirmed that either Green Lantern or Young Justice will necessarily return, only that the DC Nation block will return with "all new episodes". They've got two new series starting next year with Beware the Batman and Teen Titans Go! I am... cautiously pessimistic.

Supermorff

I made a few typos, but hopefully you can see what I meant.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

New episodes were held back because of DC Nation. Having a DC block may have sounded good in the long run, but now whenever the block is affected like it was this weekend and completely taken down YJ gets affected too.

YJ is at the mercy of the pitfalls of DC Nation, but really this could of happened regardless of a block or not. Ironic or not we actually had to wait for YJ to resume only when DC Nation started and then only for YJ to be taken down when DC Nation is. YJ is show all by it's self. It existed before DC Nation and it can exist without, You know, what's to blame? The show or the block? And if you don't then whatever, it doesn't really.

And anyway, since when does CN need an excuse to put their shows on hiatus? Do we need to start petitions for something we already know is going to resume in January. Do I really need to babble on like this? No, Probably not. If it doesn't resume in January that's when we need to start worrying.

Green Lantern's Nightlight

GL's Nightlight> I'm not sure how that's ironic.
Supermorff

Ironically new episodes of YJ was postponed so it could air when the DC Nation first premiered
Green Lantern's Nightlight

There seems to be some (possibly unfounded) speculation that Young Justice was pulled for legal reasons around Milestone characters, but that doesn't explain why GL:TAS and the rest of the block were pre-empted.

In addition to contacting CN directly, there's a petition to sign if you're so inclined: http://bit.ly/RrLAWh

Supermorff

Why are the codes stored? It's not like we're going to be able to use them again.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

Sharmaine Fisher> <<How do you feel now that new episodes of Young Justice won't be airing for quite some time?>>

Todd Jensen> It's bad enough seeing it asked here. This is the Comment Room, not Ask Greg.

I wonder if Greg W. has been informed or he'll turn on his DVR and expect to see GL: TAS only to discover that he recorded an episode of Johnny Test (or whatever) instead. I can't help but find that a funny thought.

Green Lantern's Nightlight

That's a bummer it didn't air, but the channel's postponed shows long before this. It's really no surprise.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

Kermit> Yeah, looks like him to me.

Another interesting fact about Kermit that I haven't seen anyone else point out is that his character model was used for real stone gargoyles on at least two occasions, before he appeared in the flesh. He's one of the statues next to the Trio before they notice Vinnie's bike, and one of the gargoyles accidentally shot in "Leader of the Pack".

Pterobat - [incisivis@gmail.com]

Hey.... do I see Kermit's doppelganger there? I was pretty sure I saw him in one of the Avalon scenes before, but he's never been prominent and I'm still not sure.

Hufflepuffs are great finders

It's been recently reported that the DC Nation programming block has been removed from Cartoon Network for an unspecified amount of time. Do you have info on what's going on? How do you feel now that new episodes of Young Justice won't be airing for quite some time?
Sharmaine Fisher - [lilwomanfisher@aol.com]

Ro9ge: I just sent the following through Cartoon Network's online feedback form (found here: http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/feedback/index.html). I would suggest that all "Young Justice" fans here in the CR do likewise, if you've got a moment. Choose "Programming" and "Other" for the category:

To whom it may concern,

As a regular viewer of the DC Nation programming block, I was extremely upset to learn this morning that the block had been abruptly canceled through the end of the year. I was further upset with the fact that this occurred with less than a day's notice, with even the creators of the DC Nation programs unaware of the change until it had occurred.

"Green Lantern: The Animated Series" and especially "Young Justice" are without a doubt the strongest programs on your weekly lineup. Both shows, and the highly amusing and innovative shorts that round out DC Nation, demonstrate the hard work and dedication of hundreds of individuals and rightly deserve the large fanbases they have earned over their respective runs.

Such an abrupt and badly mishandled programming shift is unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful to the Warner Bros. employees who produce these exceptional shows. It is also disrespectful to your viewership, many of whom only learned of the change when they tuned in this Saturday morning and were greeted with "Dragons: Riders of Berk" instead of the programs promised by their local airing schedules.

As a lifelong fan of Cartoon Network, while I do not begrudge you the opportunity to celebrate your 20th anniversary, my enthusiasm for that anniversary has been permanently marred by this bizarre and unprofessional move. CN has been taking great abuse in social media over the past several hours, and I would be lying if I said I didn't think the vitriol was unearned.

As such, I implore the executives in charge of program scheduling to reconsider this ill-conceived shift, or at minimum to make an official apology to their employees and to their fans for the way it was utterly mishandled.

If you do not, I expect that Cartoon Network will be taking a big hit in viewership over the next couple months, if not permanently.

Until DC Nation returns, I for one certainly won't be tuning into the channel any longer.

Sincerely,
[My real name]

Or maybe Greg B edited out the word himself? Greg W self-censored the word "bitch" in issue #2, I believe it was.
Supermorff

Arlo> Very interesting observation. Maybe it's because use of the word "bitch" (presumably in a derogatory way; I haven't got the issue in front of me to check) reinforces systemic sexism, which is a bigger issue than society's oppression of male children born out of wedlock. Or, if it was actually Greg censoring the word and not the editors, maybe it was because use of the word "bastard" was tied into the idea of the Bastard as an archetype, one that Thailog clearly represents.
Supermorff

Matt> That's an interesting thought. We know that she can't be a child of Brooklyn, but it's possible she's related to Katana. Beaks seem to be somewhat rare in most clans. But that doesn't automatically mean that all beaked Gargoyles in one clan are related.
To be honest, I think beaks are much more common than it seems.

Ro9ge

So, apparently Young Justice and the Green Lantern show got canceled at the last minute to be replaced with repeats of Johnny Test and How to Train your Dragon.

Does anybody know what's going on? The reason, according to Cartoon network, is celebrating the 11th anniversary. But this was so last minute the cable listing didn't update, not to mention that Greg Weisman thought the episode was going to air when he rambled just this last Wednesday. Also, next week they seem to give the same cancellation of DC Nation. According to the website, this might be happening for a month.

I am seriously confused right now. As far as I can tell, Cartoon Network made this change around 12 hours ago on their website. They bring the show back for two episodes and then cancel it for a perhaps a whole month?

If tumblr's any indication, they're going to get some hate-mail for this...

Ro9ge

That particular gargoyle once interested me a great deal. When I first heard about Timedancer and Brooklyn moving through time and finding an Ishimuran mate in the past I guessed that perhaps that gargoyle was a descendent of Brooklyn, perhaps even his daughter.

Of course, soon I learned more and realized that this wasn't likely, but still the thought of Goliath and Company encountering Brooklyn's daughter on their World Tour and never knowing it intrigued me. And you have to admit that there are some physical similarities.

I don't think she'd have put a dent in the number of humanoid female gargoyles, though, since that kind was likely so popular because all the main female gargoyles looked like that, and fanartists usually turned to the main characters for inspiration.

Still, cool!

I forget. Were the Building Cards a mix of good and bad things?

How about:

Elisa Card: Act Of Greg Weisman. Move forward 10 spaces.

Demona Card: Revenge. Discard all remaining Elisa cards.

Elisa Card: Endless Guns. Draw two more Elisa Cards.

Demona Card: Own Worst Enemy. Pause the tape until someone draws another Demona Card.

Might be more fun to make up your own cards too.

Building Card: Mrs. Johnson and her six kids are late on the rent. Go back six spaces.

Elisa Badge Card: Matt eats powdered sugar donuts in Elisa's car, ruining the leather interior. Go back four spaces.

Demona Wild Card: Bend over and kiss your ass good-bye.

Here's the problem with most fanfic writers: they seem to think Dominique is a second life. It isn't. Demona spelled it plainly in "High Noon." She's a gargoyle. Dominique is just a tool to help her in her goals. She'll use the form because she changes into a human, whether she likes it or not, but Dominique is not another life for her.

Thanks for the video, Greg. I had the game back in the day... actually, I think I might still have it somewhere. As out of character and weird as the game was, not to mention somewhat embarrassing for the voice actors, the game itself was actually kind of fun if I remember correctly. Now granted, I have not played it in 15 years, but I seem to recall that the random help and the enforced time limit really added a fun element to the game. It was pretty cool considering that it came out in the mid-90s.

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"First and foremost, you write. Then write some more. Then do a little writing. Read a lot. Write some more. Read some more. Read a lot. Write a lot. Study story structure. Study great literature. Study myth and legends. Joseph Campbell. Listen to how people talk. How they really talk. Learn your craft. Get a kick-ass education. Write. Read.

Write.

Get copies of animation (or other television) scripts. Learn the format.

Write spec scripts for shows that you like. Try to use those specs to get an agent. Then your agent can use those specs to get you work. Write more specs. If you can't get an agent, send the specs to production companies that you admire. Don't send a Batman spec to Warner Bros or a Gargoyles to Disney. Legally, they can't risk reading those. But you can send Batman to Disney and Gargoyles to Warners. (I know it sounds weird. There's a real good reason for this, but it's a whole other question, so for now just trust me.) Actually, you shouldn't be writing a Gargoyles spec at all, since that show isn't producing new episodes now. You don't want your spec to come off as yesterday's news. Keep reading. Keep writing. Try writing a pilot script and a short bible for an original series. Try using those to get an agent or work (any work, you need credits on your resume.)

Oh, yeah. PROOFREAD. PROOFREAD. PROOFREAD. Read your own work aloud, you catch more mistakes that way. Read. Write. Write some more. Get used to a lot of rejection. A LOT OF REJECTION.

That's the best advice I can give you except this: writing for television is an extremely difficult career to break into, let alone succeed at; so if you don't really have a PASSION for it, then do something else. You'll need that passion to see you through a lot of dark times. If you can be happy doing anything else, then do that other thing.

Otherwise, good luck."

Goliath was reluctant to leave the castle unguarded, and he probably still would be even after the Vikings sacked it; but if the Massacre hadn't happened, he could have sent a strike force against the Vikings while still leaving a defensive force at the castle.

And that's probably what he would have done, I think.

Paul - [nampahcfluap@yahoo.com]

Todd: I've thought for a while that it'd be an interesting alternate history to see what would happen if the clan had been left alone or not present- would they have abandoned the humans like the Captain said? While I doubt Goliath would be willing, and Hudson would have sympathy because of old loyalties to the prince, I can see some of the others refusing. Othello, for instance, always struck me as a moral coward, and I can easily see him saying they should worry about their own problems and forget the humans (he says almost exactly this in High Noon). Demona, of course, would be working to convince others to ignore the humans. The trio are young and could probably be swayed either way, but they have fresh memories of humans mistreating them, so I wouldn't put bets on them doing the right thing. I imagine it would lead to a serious schism, and since we don't know much about the other gargoyles in the clan it's hard to say who would win out.

The first three questions, at least, were answered near the end of "Darkest" when Wally told Nightwing they happened within a few months.

Green Lantern's Nightlight

Demona and the Captain's plan struck me as having several flaws - enough that it's no wonder it ended in disaster. The most obvious was that it involved bringing an outside enemy in to solve an internal dispute - and had the consequences you'd expect from that.

Also, the plan required Goliath and his clan to just accept that the Vikings had captured and led away the human residents of the castle and make no attempt to go to their rescue. I can't imagine Goliath and Hudson taking that route. Demona might have planned to talk them out of it, but I don't think she'd have succeeded.

Todd Jensen
Hufflepuffs are great finders

And I think his "suicide" and neglect of the eggs stems more from grief and helplessness than guilt. He had lost his entire family and felt unprepared physically and emotionally to raise a new generation.

I think he feels some guilt over the fact that such a turn of events happened during his leadership and I think he regrets that he didn't do more to change Demona the Captain and Katharine. But I also think he feels no blame for the Massacre itself. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I think Goliath knows that. As Greg B said, I think he knows that he made the best decisions he could with the information he had at the time.

And great point about bringing along the youngest gargoyles to track down the Vikings. I hadn't thought of that and it makes Demona's last ditch efforts even more crazy. Or maybe she was hoping to barricade everyone in rookery or something. I think by the time Goliath was about to leave with Hudson, Demona and her plans were spiraling out of control. I don't think she was thinking through any of her actions at that point. I mean, she said "Take me along at least"! What is THAT about? She was going to leave everyone behind to their fate? Of course, that is essentially what she did anyway. And Goliath even left her in command. She could've ordered the whole clan to leave the Castle the moment Goliath took off if she wanted to. She could've lied and said she got a tip that they were in danger or whatnot. But she didn't. She would rather risk the lives of her clan than risk them discovering she was a traitor.

Agreed, but the question wasn't how much is he to blame, it was how much does he blame himself? Since he basically attempted suicide and didn't bother looking over the eggs very much, we know he blamed himself considerably (at least from canon-in-training answers) before he found out about Demona's betrayal. From his reaction when he found out the truth, it's clear he, for the most part, understands it was really her fault. But I'm sure he still has some feelings of self-blame and "What if...?" moments. It would be difficult not to.

Greg B> Exactly. It would have been insane for Goliath to take the entire clan just for a small defensive scouting. He is not at fault, because Demona created the conditions under which that large a departure would be necessary.

Also, this is proof Demona didn't think this through: did she expect Goliath to take the beasts and the youngest generation of gargoyles too?

How do I quantify responsibility? Well, if my brother and I are wrestling around for fun and we knock over my mom's vase, then I feel 50% responsible and I would probably expect him to feel the same. Maybe we should both feel 100% responsible, either way, it's quantitative.

So given the above example, coupled with my opinion and events of the show, specifically with "Shadows of the Past" in the back of my mind, Goliath definitely feels responsible. How much? Not sure, maybe 50%, maybe 100%, that's why I asked. I thought it was a good question and might have createc some discussion.

Of course, we all know that Goliath knows who was ACTUALLY responsible by the end of "Awakening". But back in the 994, he made a decision to leave his clan behind and scare the vikings away without any help. As leader of the clan, he was responsible for their safety and he failed them. His second in command and the Captain both warned him that the vikings would be back. Unfortunately, his friends plotted behind his back which was out of his hands, so that should factor in with his feelings, especially after he learns the truth.

Anthony - from Goliath I get:

...the sense of anger at those who betrayed the clan, or attacked the castle, to cause the massacre (Hakon, Captain, Demona, Vikings)

...the sense of regret and sorrow at the loss in general.

...a pinch of regret at the massacre but ultimately i think he knows he could not have been two places at once... if anything, based on his sorrow in "Awakenings" he probably wishes that he died with the rest of them more than actual regret that he failed them.

just my opinion anyway.

TINI> How do you quantify that which is unquantifiable?

In any event, I think he ponders what if he did different sometimes, but ultimately he made the best decisions he could at the time given the information he had, and I tend to think he knows who is responsible. Hakon, the Captain, and Demona.

On a scale from 1(lowest) - 10(highest), how much do you think Goliath considers himself responsible for the massacre at Castle Wyvern? What events, if any, add or subtract to his sense of responsibility? How much do you think he regrets not taking the entire clan and leaving like Demona and the Captain suggested?

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?
