Happy Holidays anyways!

On every world, wherever people are, in the deepest part of the winter, at the exact mid-point, everybody stops and turns and hugs. As if to say, "Well done. Well done, everyone! We're halfway out of the dark."

Oh, and sorry for the double post, but I forgot to mention that the local PBS station (and maybe other PBS stations outside St. Louis) is airing a Christmas special with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir that features John Rhys-Davies (from the promos for it, he's apparently playing the part of the Ghost of Christmas Present in a dramatization of scenes from "A Christmas Carol").

Merry Christmas, everyone!

BISHANSKY - I've got to congratulate you on your display of Tolkien scholarship in that creativity demon. (Tolkien once wrote a series of short stories - in the form of letters to his children - about Santa Claus under the "Father Christmas" alias, by the way, but a much more conventional take on him - mostly. He was portrayed as having a comically inept polar bear for an assistant who would do things like inadvertently switching on the Northern Lights full blast, climbing up the North Pole to rescue Father Christmas' hat that had blown up there - the Pole breaks in half under his weight, and trying to carry too many presents down the stairs at once. Father Christmas also had occasional clashes with the goblins who, while having come down in the world since the days of Middle-earth, were keen on looting his workshop and making off with all his toys.)

And what happened then? Well, in Whoville they say
That the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day.

And then the true meaning of Christmas came through,
And the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches, plus two!

And now that his heart didn't feel quite so tight,
He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light.

With a smile to his soul, he descended Mount Crumpet
Cheerily blowing "Who! Who!" on his trumpet.

He rode into Whoville, he brought back their toys
He brought back their floof to the Who girls and boys.

He brought back their snoof, and their tringlers and fuzzles,
Brought back their pantookas, their dafflers and wuzzles.

He brought everything back, all the food for the feast
And he, he himself, the Grinch, carved the roast beast!

Welcome Christmas. Bring your cheer
Cheer to all Whos, far and near.

Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp.

Christmas Day will always be
Just as long as we have we.

Welcome Christmas while we stand
Heart to heart and hand in hand.

I tried to write my take on a "Gargoyles and Saint Nicholas" story once. The basic premise was that Nicholas was a young layabout who didn't pay attention to anyone but himself, and the nobility of some local gargoyles inspired him to become a better person. While I think the premise is fine, when I tried to write it it wasn't much of a story. I couldn't really make it interesting, so I gave up a few pages in. Anyone who's interested is welcome to adopt the idea.

Please, well all know Santa Claus is actually Sauron. Think about it. Sauron once claimed to be "Annatar, Lord of Gifts." Both Santa and "Annatar" are on good terms with the Elves, and both Santa and "Annatar" give you what you desire with no obvious strings attached.

On a related note, if Santa is indeed Sauron, this means Melkor has broken the Door of Night and revived his greatest followers, which means Dagor Dagorath is right around the corner.

He seems to be playing it slow, however, tempting the children of the Edain into darkness by playing upon their greed. Once he feels he's corrupted us by making us materialistic and selfish enough for his tastes, he'll use that to manipulate us back into his service (again, we seem to fall into his service depressingly easily) before striking at the now-extra-dimensional Valinor. Judging from our present culture, it'll only be another generation or two…

Considering the modern day image of Santa Claus is an amalgamation of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the Dutch Sinterklaas, the English Father Christmas figure and Odin himself. I always imagined that Santa Claus would have been similar to the New Olympians, that is to say the offspring of a mortal and a member of the Third Race.

I recently learned that St. Nicholas, one of the originals of Santa Claus, was the patron saint of New York City. It gives new possibilities to that story Greg Weisman mentioned having plans to someday write in which the gargoyles would meet Santa.

"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
