Fanficton Story -

Gargoyles A Different Choice

There are an infinite number of universes, of possibilities. What if in, at least, one Demona was frozen alongside the rest of the future Manhattan Clan on that tragic night in 994 C.E.? How would events unfold differently once our favorite Gargoyles were revived by the scheming billionaire David Xanatos? Find out in my latest story. Sent in modern times; 2014 vs 1994

Once someone tried to argue on Ask Greg that people shouldn't have a problem with the time skip in Young Justice because Gargoyles had a time skip. I'm pretty sure they were referring to the fact that it had flashbacks in Scotland to before they were frozen for a thousand years. That technically doesn't count, it was always predominately set in the present (back then), "Awakening, Part One" even began in the present. So that's an invalid counter argument.

I recently finished Mr Selfridge, which had time skips for each new season, because it had to cover twenty years, but even with that justification it was quite hard to follow all the changes that had occurred between season 1 and 2 then again for 2 and 3, although it wasn't that hard to follow from season 4.

You have to get used to significant changes and then get used to all the changes having taken place, like characters aging and having to follow the changes that have taken place, totally new characters being introduced. Then once you get used to it by the end of that season, they make drastic changes all over again, by dropping some characters, making changes to older characters, and you have to get used to that all over again. It will tests you as an audience if you can put up with these changes, especially if you got used to certain characters, etc. It can pay off, if you follow through, but can sometimes alienate a viewer so much, that they just can't watch it anymore because everything they liked about the show they watched from the start has suddenly become something entirely different.

It'd be nice if #WeLiveAgain actually meant something. It's not really a proactive hashtag.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

Her name does show up in a few places, but many scholars now believe that she was an inadvertent invention of the Venerable Bede, who mistakenly assumed that Easter's name was derived from an old goddess.

I never heard the name Eostre until I read "American Gods" and I like to think I know a fair bit about mythology and folklore.

There's some debate on whether Eostre was even an old Anglo-Saxon goddess; some historians and folklore scholars suspect she was invented as a piece of "folk-etymology" for Easter.

JURGEN> I've seen some folklorist try to connect the Easter Bunny back to the Germanic spring goddess Eostre so... potential Child of Oberon?

Is that where the "Ho, ho, ho" comes from? :P
Green Lantern's Nightlight

I imagine Greg would give Santa Claus and Dracula the same treatment that he did with Macbeth, blend the historical figure with the more widely known fictional version and have it fit in with his own world's mythology.

I actually tried to write a fanfic once showing how Santa Claus, or at least Saint Nicolas, could fit into Gargoyles. The idea was that Nicolas was a spoiled, selfish brat, but he was inspired by the actions of a gargoyle protecting people and that led him to save the condemned prostitutes that legend says he helped. I gave up eventually because it was basically just a premise and no real "story" was coming out of it. It's the sort of thing I could see happening in the Gargoyles universe, though.

Now, if Greg tried to work in the Easter Bunny, that'd be a bit more of a stretch.

I don't consider this exactly a bad fit for the Gargoyles Universe, but - I remember Greg mentioning that he'd planned a story involving Santa Claus, and I've long wondered how that would fit. Santa somehow seems different from the epic and often dark adventure tone of "Gargoyles", more designed for lighter and fluffier settings. (Then again, he's managed to show up in "Doctor Who".)

(Speaking of "Doctor Who", I was reading a just-published "Doctor Who" graphic novel from Titan Books today, which had a story where the Doctor encounters a living gargoyle in San Francisco, that looked a lot like Brooklyn, except colored green.)

Algernon> Anywhere in the Gargoyles universe or specifically for the main series (and close temporal counterparts like Bad Guys, New Olympians, Pendragon, and Heroes of Ulster)? After all, there are quite a few PD characters that would work well for, say, a TimeDance, but not nearly as well in present day. Others might work in 2198 but not so much in the Dark Ages.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

GNL> Wow... we are on total opposite side of that debate, my friend. :)

Algernon > I think having Dracula would have been over the top. I don't look forward to the day Greg puts him in if he ever gets that chance. It shows how much Greg has put into this universe, but I still wouldn't want to see Dracula.

SIX!!!

So here's a thought...

Greg's often talked about incorporating various characters and concepts from mythology, folklore and public domain fiction into the Gargoyles Universe. E.G. Dracula, Prospero & Jean Valjean.

But are there any characters or concepts from the PD that'd legally be allowed use in the GU, yet would make bad fits for the verse?

I have some thoughts but I wanna hear what everyone else thinks first.
