You've revealed that Luna, Phoebe, and Selene represent three different 'motivations.' You said these motivations are Fate, Revenge, and Compassion (it's fairly obvious from the show what Phoebe stands for, and you've said yourself in previous ASK GREG responses that Phoebe is "the nice one").

So, why do the Sisters harbor these three agendas of all agendas? If the answer is somewhere along the lines of what The Phoenix Gate's origin is (i.e. only the Timestream, or God, knows), then what were your behind-the-scenes reasons?

Greg responds...

This is more an issue of feel than logic to me, which may be disappointing.

But I feel like these three 'agendas' as you call them strike a balance.

Do we take action or does action take us?

Do we seek redress or offer mercy?

Can we comprehend the universe?

It just works for me.

And, hell, since I've all but revealed it anyway.

When Luna is ascendent the Sisters are the Fates or Norns (or any similar threesome).

When Seline is ascendent the Sisters are the Furies (or any similar threesome).

When Phoebe is ascendent the Sisters are the Graces (or any similar threesome).

Also, you said that the Sisters three personality traits showed that thet'de be playing different parts in the series.

No. Phoebe isn't "good". And Seline isn't 'evil'. And Luna is far from 'neutral'.

You're attaching value judgments to their traits.

You've said that the timeline is "'done' for now" and that the last date you have listed is in 2198. Because I would assume that the liberation of Earth is a big event that you would have planned and included in your timeline, does this mean that the invasion lasts less than a year? (because it started already in March 2198)

Greg responds...

No. It just means that I haven't yet decided how long it takes before the liberation occurs. It's certainly longer than one year. Beyond 2198 or so things are quite vague in my head... The only things that I know happen after liberation is the formation of the Liberty and Notre Dame Clans.

Like you, I'm not a biologist, but this thing about a garg's wings bug me. You said that there are bones inside the wings, though you were not sure. But if there are some, then they can't be like the ones inside the arms or legs. Just watch one episode and you should notice what I mean. To fold them over the shoulders with only two large bones, they must be made of rubber, but that seems pretty unlikely. I would say that either instead of two large bones there are many vertebras, or instead of bones something else like cartilage.

I hope you understand what I mean.

I already said this in the comment room, but you may not have read it. I just wanted to say sorry about how I put a bit too much attitude into some of my past questions (though at the time it felt more like righteous outrage to the way you answered questions). You were quite right in how you aren't obliged to answer for anything for us. This is your domain and your time you are putting out, and sometimes I and other people take that for granted. So in the future I will try to be more respectful.
That having been said, the reason I talked like that was I didn't see why making a small mistake in the question, was any reason not to answer. I didn't (and still don't) understand what you want when you avoid a question. You could want to not answer it at that moment, or it could just be a secret you don't want to get out (which I am quite willing to respect). So:

1) How can I tell which smart-ass response means what? As in When does it mean that you don't want to answer ever, you don't feel like answering now or you just don't want to answer because my spelling is getting aggravating.

2) Would you please be so kind as to grant me the knowledge of why Goliath, Angela and Gabriel weren't burned horribly when they fell into that water mixed with hot magma? By now I do have my own theory about this, but I would like to hear your answer.

And as for my spelling, since both you and Todd Jenson have told me how hard it is for you and him to read what I have to say, I have been making quite a fair effort to keep it clean (and the response as been fairly good in the CR). It seems people can change someone for the better, thanks for the incentive.
BTW, I was just slightly amused when I looked up "Pendantic" (which was what you called on of my questions) in the dictionary and couldn't find it. It was only when I asked my mom, that I found out it is spelled "Pedantic". But still, It's a cool word and thanks for teaching it to me.

Many thanks.
The Lord of the Sloths.

Greg responds...

1. Honestly, you probably can't in a vacuum. If you hang here long enough, you may get a better sense of my rhythms, I suppose. But I still maintain that I don't have to explain myself. I just have to keep it fun for (a) me and (b) enough of you guys to make doing this worthwhile. I think the smart-ass stuff is part of the fun. Certainly for (a). And hopefully for a large enough percentage of (b).

2. I'd have to review the scene in question. It's been awhile.

Your spelling is much improved and it is much appreciated. I don't myself claim to be a brilliant speller, and, hey, typos happen. I know how to spell pedantic, so that one was a typo. All I asked is that you make a bit more of an effort. You have. I'm grateful.

Greg responds...

"Vows" really only has one ending. But the first time it aired, it aired with an uncorrected scene. It showed Goliath and Demona kissing. It's supposed to be a final flashback to them at the castle in the tenth century. But the first time it aired the wrong background was used, and so they seemed to be kissing in the present at the clocktower. This is just a mistake, and it was corrected for subsequent airings. (We ran out of time or it would have been corrected before the first airing.)

Some of the fans prefer the mistake. Don't ask me why.

Hi Greg,

Last one from me, for awhile anyway.
Ok, these are about disabilities. I'm disabled and I was wondering about this because it seemed to me that the only gargoyles that had anything wrong with them (such as blindness or missing a limb) aquired it in battle.

1. Are any gargoyls born with problems that cause a disability?(Like, I have heart problems and they caused me to have a stroke when I was 4 years old which caused the right side of my body not to work properly.)
2. Are any gargoyles born blind, mute, deaf or missing any limbs?
3. If yes, what does the rest of the clan do with them?
4. If no, why not?

Ok, I'm being chased off the computer. I better run. Bye.

Greg responds...

1. I don't know. I won't rule it out, but I have their healing factor to figure in. It's also possible that some eggs just don't hatch. But I'd have to think and do more research.

2. Same answer. I'm not sure at this point.

3. The clan takes care of its own in any case.

4. The answer, if the answer is no, would have something to do with the healing factor which begins to work even in the egg. But again, I haven't considered this yet, honestly.

Hi Greg,

The Cat, again.
Ok, these questions are about language.

1. Do gargoyles have their own language?
2. If no, then how come the Guatamala and Japanese Clans could understand Goliath, Angela and Elisa when they were on the "World Tour"?
3. If yes, what would it be called? Don't you dare say English, that is a Human language!
4. How come the Guatamala Clan and the Japanese Clan could speak perfect English? It takes a bit of time to translate Spanish into English and vica versa. Same with Japanese.
5. Languages under go many changes. In just a generation the words that one used to mean "Nice!" Have gone from "Groovy!" to "Cool!" So, how could Elisa understand Goliath since the English language had gone through many changes in 1,000 years and most likely Goliath and his clan spoke Celtic, Gaelic or Anglo-Saxxon, not English?

Ok, Bye.

Greg responds...

1. No.

2. On some level we were cheating. But basically, we were assuming that English is fairly global at this point.

3. See above.

4. I wanted to make more use of foreign languages in these and at least a couple other episodes. Do a bit of stuff with subtitles. But my bosses rejected the idea.

5. This was another cheat, largely. I'm told, Michael Reaves has a theory to explain this using a magic spell. But I've not heard it first hand.

Hi Greg,

Ya said post every question separately for each topic, so that is what I'm doing.

Ok, these questions are on another topic of much controversy. Race. I'm curious about this topic because during my freshman and sophmore years in highschool my classmates were in a racial, I'll say, argument. While, I think, no one was hurt it left me wondering about what gargoyles might do in the same predicament.

So, here are the questions:
1. Are gargoyles prejudice of another gargoyle just because the other has something different than the others, like wings, a beak, ears, etc?
2. Do gargoyles ever think that they are better or worse off because of how they look?
3. If either of these two are incorrect, then why?

Well that's it, Bye.

Greg responds...

1. Because there is so much racial prejudice between gargoyles and humans, the cosmetic differences between various gargoyles seem relatively insignificant. Everything is relative, of course and depends on scale.

2. Sure.

3. See above.

Figured I'd nag ya just a little.

Ok, these questions are about religion. I'm curious about this one because I remember (this is still probably going on) when the northern half of Ireland was in turmoil with the southern half just because of religion.

So, here are the questions:

1. Are gargoyles concerned about religion as much as humans are?
2. Do they have their own?
3. Do they ever get into fights with other clans just because their version of the truth doesn't quite corruspond to the others version of the truth or because one clan may believe in one god or goddess while the other clan may believe in more than one god or goddess?

Or:
4. Are gargoyles so much "higher" than humans that they're not that petty and really don't care about whether or not the religion of one clan corrusponds to their's as long as it has something in it about protecting humans and being "good"?

Hope ya got all that. Hope I spelled right. Oh well, you should get the idea of what I mean if I didn't spell any big words right, like corruspond, I don't think I spelled that one right.

Greg responds...

1. Referring to any group of individuals as monolithic in their beliefs is a mistake. But generally speaking the Gargoyles' Faith, so to speak, is both animistic and monotheistic and essentially more laissez faire than most human religions. Codes of conduct and respect and tradition mean quite a bit. But God generally takes care of himself/herself.

2. Sure, to some extent. Check the archives under Gargoyle customs for more information.

3. Interclan warfare would be EXTREMELY rare in that the clans are so spread out even in medieval times.

4. Individual gargoyles may be more 'evolved' than individual humans, but one of the points of the series was that no one species is superior to any other species.

In fact, Goliath's initial reaction to Thailog is not to form a bond. It's to call him an abomination. (You blithely skipped over that, Shan.) Part of what follows is a bit of guilt mixed in with him taking responsibility for Thailog as a parent.

As to Angela, you've again missed his initial reaction to her on Avalon. It is clearly one of paternal pride, just as he is proud of Gabriel and all of his children.

Shan responds:
You're right on both counts. I do remember having fallen asleep and just woken up in time to see the "Double Jeapordy" episode. Probably thought I remembered more than I really did, both about what I had just seen and Angela's situation. Lousy excuse though. I really should have researched better before asking a question of such an involved level (re: attempting to compare Thailog and Angela).

In the episode, "Future Tense," didn't it ever--disturb you looking back how Demona and Brooklyn were a couple? I mean, I see Goliath as a father to Brooklyn(even though G's only 10 garg years older). It wouldn't be right for a son to date his father's former wife/girlfriend. It would be downright disgusting. Yick! If my mother was single, I could never, EVER go out with a guy that has dated my her--even if he was around my age. Would you? And to make the B/D relationship concept/idea worse, Demona had been with THAILOG before she'd been with Brooklyn. Talk about hand-me-downs. Wow, that would be quite a marketing idea. I could just see it now: "Come on down and get the all-new 'Hand-Me-Down Demona' action figure! As a bonus you get to choose between Goliath, Thailog, or Brooklyn as her perspective "partner!" Heh heh! Demona would have a different outfit for which ever pairing you choose. Heh! Anyway, I'm just glad the whole thing was a dream-sequence scheme created by Puck and not something that would actually happen in "your" Gargoyle Universe.

Greg responds...

Well, first off it was intentionally done for shock value to freak Goliath (and our audience) out.

But to be fair, I don't see Goliath as a father figure to Brooklyn. I see him as an older brother.

Airportman writes...

OK, Greg--

Don't laugh, but I have an idea about how to get Gargoyles back on the air. Here's the lowdown:

I've been looking through the archives, specifically the "Bringing Gargoyles Back" one, and I've come across a lot of questions like, "What can I do to bring Gargoyles back?" The answer, howerver, is always the same: "Write letters to Disney, or Buena Vista and ask for the show back, or petition a DVD release of the series." We all know letters are more efficient than emails at these sorts of things, but idividual letters won't do anything compared to an organized, letter-writing campaign. I'm guessing that most of the time you tell people to write in, they don't, because they don't have a clue as to where to start. No address or anything. I suggest that we organize a campaign right here on ASK GREG. I suggest that a new addition to the main page be added, with information about addresses and people to whom we should write. If this info were advertized on the Station 8 Gargoyles page, I'm sure all these people who read ASK GREG would write in; I know I would. Maybe we could persuade some of the other Gargoyles fan pages to advertize it too. I think if we concentrate on a few key Disney and Buena Vista addresses, and absolutely flood them with mail, the message might get through. I'd be willing to help coordinate the campaign, but to be honest, I don't know where to begin. I know you're not in charge of designing the page or anything, but I'm guessing whoever is is probably reading this. Tell me what you think of this idea; I think it can work.

Greg responds...

Lots of thoughts -- in no particular order...

1. Thank you for caring about this. It means a lot to me.

2. Don't count on the notion that Gore reads all these questions. He may not have seen this suggestion. If you're serious and want his help, contact him directly.

3. An organized letter writing campaign would be terrific. I would start with a small focus, a small goal. Get the series released on DVD. I'd recommend contacting Walt Disney Television Animation, Walt Disney (or is it Buena Vista) Home Video and Michael Eisner.

4. ASK GREG is definitely not the site to organize this. Sorry. But if the campaign seems to have been generated by me or by something so obviously connected to me, then it won't look like it's coming from the fans. It'll look like I'm being self-serving. (Which I suppose I am in a way, but it's best if we keep that between us.)

5. Airportman, if you're interested in coordinating this effort, then I say go for it and thanks. You say you don't know where to begin, but you seem to have outlined many of the steps above. You need to figure out (a) what to say, (b) where to send the message and (c) how to publicize the campaign so that you get as many people involved as possible. Good luck.

I enjoyed the first film. I even loved the ending and was looking forward to the sequel.

But the sequel was disappointing. It's been awhile, so my full grasp of my specific gripes are vague, but...

The way that Elizabeth Shue (MJF's recast girlfriend) is shunted aside suggested that they weren't interested in really expanding on the previous movies' situation but were really just interested in doing a CRAZIER version of the first film.

MJF plays his character's own kids. Why? He didn't play his own parents in the first movie. What's the point of casting him as his own son AND DAUGHTER, except to mess with our suspension of disbelief for the sake of showing us just how undeniably talented MJF is.

All the intercutting with the first film was interesting at first, but ultimately served to undercut the first film in my memory.

All this struck me as masturbatory. The film-makers (particularly Zemekis and Fox) having their own good time at the expense of what could have been a really fun movie.

Just my opinion, of course.

Hey,
I've asked a few questions now (kinda had to warm myself up) so I thought I might give a little background, especially considering that the ability to post is back.
My first introduction to Gargoyles was from a number of ads in Marvel comic books back in '94. Seeing as I live in Australia, it took us a while to get the series, but when we did, I managed to watch it every Saturday morning (which is quite a feat for me, considering I'm not a morning person, and never have been).
At the end of the first season, I never saw Gargoyles on Saturday morning television again. Not sure if it was because whatever channel it was on stopped broadcasting it, or because I stopped getting up early to watch cartoons. In any case, all I had was a vague memory of the show, and that I liked it at the time.
Flash forward to about a year or so ago, and Gargoyles is on the Disney Channel on cable, seven nights a week. I'd managed to learn a bit about it from the internet, and I gave it another shot. I was addicted. High production values, strong characters and imaginative story-lines. What really sucked me in was "City of Stone". I found it amazing that "Macbeth" had been used not only as source material, but that the character himself was a recurring one in what was otherwise a kid's cartoon.
So I'd really like to thank you for creating such an inspirational and imaginitive show, and say how cool it is that you afford the fans this oppurtunity to pick your brains, as it were.
I might have lost out on the show when I was a kid, but I've gotten it back in spades as...well...legally I qualify as an "adult", but the term is debatable ; )
In any case, thank you.
~A fan

You're welcome. And thank you.

I've noticed a lot of simularties between Gargoyles and Gummi Bears. And you said you worked on Gummi Bears before you worked on Gargoyles right?

Okay first, during their first seasons there are six main character Gummi Bears and six main character gargoyles, each containing a trio of younger characters.

Second, each group found the seventh main character on a magic island (Angela on Avalon and Gusto on that island that is a hole in the ocean)

Third, the Great Book of Gummi reminds me of the Grimorum Arcanorum.

Fourth, the Gummi Bears met other Gummies on the British Isles (the Barbics) and in Japan (or China, the never said,) in Xiang-Wu, and made contact with Gummies in New Gumbrea (which if you follow the Gummi Scope is in South/Central America). Goliath & co. met other gargoyle clans in the British isles (London clan), Japan in Ishimura, and in South America (Mayan Clan).

So, how much did Gummi Bears inspire Gargoyles?

Greg responds...

I did a bit of kibbitzing on later seasons of Gummi Bears, but I wouldn't say I worked on it.

As I've said MANY TIMES, Gummi Bears was a MAJOR influence on the original comedy development of the show. Since much of that development survived (in one form or another) into the final product, it's no surprise that Gargoyles reveals a Gummi influence. Some of your specifics seem more coincidental than intentional, but the influence is real.

Why is it that most of the main gargoyle cast of Dark Ages survived to the modern age in one form or another (Goliath and Hudson slept for a thousand years in stone, Demona was given immortality and Iago, Othello and Desdemona were resurrected by Demona) with the exception of Hudson's mate and Hippolyta? I mean I just find it a little bit weird that ¾ of the main characters survived making it seem massacre was nothing since most of the main characters we know survived.

Greg responds...

You're looking at it from a skewed point of view.

I thought you'd be MOST interested in seeing the prequel adventures of the characters you know best and slowly introducing you to more. At any rate, that's the way I feel like exploring the past.

How that could make the massacre 'nothing' doesn't make any sense to me. Was it nothing when you first saw it in "Awakening, Part One" when you literally didn't know ANYONE who was destroyed except Demona -- who really wasn't?

Almost all creative work focuses on specific individual characters and the impact of events on their lives.

Were there ever Gargoyles living in Notre Dame prior to 1995?

Not saying.

1) In 2198, is Delilah the leader of the Labyrinth clan?
2) Was Delilah the leader of the Labyrinth clan before the events of march 2198?
3) You said Delilah knows that she is descendant from the original Delilah, does that mean she wasn't raised in a community rookery?
4) If she was, were all of the Labyrinth eggs raised individually or in community rookeries?
5) If she wasn't, then how did she know she was descendant from original Delilah?

Greg responds...

1. Not initially.

2. No.

3. It doesn't mean that, no.

4. Not saying.

5. Well, it will be visually obvious for starters. Otherwise, I'm not saying.

What position does Delilah have in the Labyrinth clan?

Greg responds...

I haven't absolutely decided this either. (Or figured it out, rather.) I think she's Second. But she may just be a warrior. (I assume we're talking about 2198 Delilah here.)

Do most people know of the Avalon clan in 2198? If so why don't they know of the Fay?
If not then how did people explain the appearance of an extra gargoyle leader at QFL?

Greg responds...

A select few humans know of the clan, without knowing much about Avalon itself.

1) There any reason why Nick Natsilane Maza is connected to all four of the tricksters? (His Maza family line is part of a tribe closely related to Coyote, Diane's family has roots with a tribe associated with Anansi, the Natsilane family is of course connected to Raven, and Nick has some relation with Owen/Puck)
2) If the answer to 1) is yes, what is that reason?

Greg responds...

I think you're stretching the point.

Diane's association with Anansi is limited to her having met him. And Nick's association with Puck is limited to him having met Owen.

Shortly after Ask Greg stopped allowing questions to be submitted in August 2001, someone brought this news article to the attention of the Station 8 CR:

"Italian professor Severino Antinori ...are set to unveil their plans" (to clone a human)

Full article at: http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/europe/08/06/clone.doctor/index.html

Is it a coincidence... or a prophecy?

I saw a report about that in the L.A. Times. Weirded me out, I'll tell you.

1) Did you ever have plans for the trickster Loki?
2) If so, what are they?

Greg responds...

As I've mentioned before, I'm on the fence about Loki, as he is a character who has been done to death elsewhere. Same with Thor. They may be dead. But I haven't decided. I haven't found a way into the characters that strikes me as unique enough to justify including them in anything but flashbacks.

It was his. The terms of its exchange had long expired. He wanted it back.

Why did Earth surrender so easily to the Space-Spawn?
Do we haven any colonies in outer space in 2198? Did they also surrender?

Greg responds...

They were completely overmatched and in crisis. Short-term one could argue they had little choice, particularly since the penalty for merely saying no would have been the complete anhiliation of the planet.

Define "outer space". There were colonies within our solar system. None further out. And yes, they were forced to surrender too.

I just noticed that Charles Canmore's Hunter costume was most similar to Jon Canmore's Hunter costume was this symbolic of both men unable to give up the tradition of the hunt while Robyn and Jason it seems were able to give up the hunt? If not why did the two costumes of Charles and Jon resemble each other?

Greg responds...

Each and every Hunter costume is a variation on the original's basic theme.

Some of what you've noticed may be due more to coincidence rather then intent. Otherwise you'd have to ask the costume's designers.
