My "ramble" about "Protection".
I'll admit that this isn't one of my favorite ones (more out of my personal tastes, I suppose, than anything else), although a few parts of it did stand out to me. Especially Goliath's disgust that Dracon would actually call his extortion racket "protection" (and indeed, to him, that misuse of the word would be approaching blasphemy).
Looking back on my "first-time response", I know that I definitely didn't think that the "Elisa gone bad" was a clone (maybe because the story concept here was so obviously a mundane one - Dracon, the most "mundane" of the recurring antagonists running an extortion racket - that such a notion just didn't occur to me). I'm not sure if I thought that it was a frame-up; what I do know is that I was surprised to see Elisa acting that way, and it made sense to me when it turned out that she was just acting. (I noticed that Goliath believed that she'd been placed under a spell - his 10th century upbringing naturally at work again here - but that Broadway made the correct realization almost at once.)
One nice touch during the "acting" scene for Pal Joey's benefit: Chavez mentioning about how Elisa's been acting strange lately - I can't help wondering whether she really was wondering about that at the time. (It certainly had the advantage of making the "acting" less obvious to the audience).
I've occasionally wondered just how much Dave knew about what was really going on when Elisa was visiting him in the pool hall. Did he really believe that Elisa was a crooked cop?
One other favorite part: the bit where Dracon asks Goliath if Elisa's his woman (just goes to show that he may be a crook, but he's not blind), then starts patting him on the shoulder, commenting on how he's got good taste - Goliath glowers at him for that familiarity, and Tony hurriedly retreats. (I can't say that I blame him, but I'm amazed that he was actually daring to pat Goliath to begin with).
Broadway lets out another rude crude belch while helping himself to the jalapena peppers. Though it's the last one that I can recall in the series.
I couldn't help but think that Matt looked almost hopelessly geeky in his grocery clerk disguise. Jaffe's "tilting at windmills" line reminded me of your remark about how "quixotic" is a very good word to describe Matt (I recall that I initially used it in my comments about his pursuit of the Illuminati).
We also find out how Dracon keeps on showing up again in spite of his getting arrested each time in the previous episode - though obviously, in light of his being behind bars at the beginning of "Turf", there are limits to what even his lawyers can do.
It's really great to have the rambles going again. I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.
ME TOO!!!!
I think Dave did think that Elisa was corrupt.
Knowing my luck this question has been answered but hey I'll ask it again for good measure! Are there any more Gargoyles eppisodes written? If so, is there any chance of gettng them out? Any? Any at all?
No. There was an issue I wrote for the Marvel Gargoyles comic, before it was cancelled. There was an episode of Team Atlantis that was written and recorded and featured Demona and Fiona Canmore that was never made. And there are tons of ideas floating around in my head.
But that's it.
Cool news on the Bionicle thing! hwat role do you play in the production of it?
I co-wrote the original story with Bob Thompson, Henry Gilroy and Allistair Swinnerton. I was Henry's story editor on the first couple drafts of the screenplay.
Have you read "Anubis Gates"?
Nope.
About Castle Wyvern...
Now I know a wyvern is a "species" of dragon. Standing on his hind legs. It's either never had front legs or it's front legs evolved into wings, as bats have.
1.) Did you choose the name Wyvern just because it sounded good?
2.) Or was there a backstory to why that castle bears the name of this little known dragon species?
3.) If there is a backstory, could you tell us anything about it?
Thanks Greg!
1. I believe that Michael Reaves chose the name Wyvern.
2. There is now. And if you come to a Gathering, you'll get a clear hint of what that is when you see the DARK AGES pitch.
3. Not right now. But maybe in Montreal. Check out:
this may nt be a good question but do u ever get mad or bord or question not ancering all these questions?
Yes. Yes. Yes.
But the positives still outweigh the negatives, or else I wouldn't be doing it.
Dear Greg,
My name is Ian,and like most kids,I want to be an actor, and was wondering,do you know of any way I could into the High School of Performing Arts?
Do MOST kids really want to be actors?
Man, that's depressing.
And no, I don't have a clue.
I don't even know WHICH High School of the Performing Arts you're talking about. The famous one from FAME in N.Y.?
Most major cities have one. I know L.A. does.
Anyway, try asking a guidance councilor, I guess.
greg hi i was wondering if gargoyles comes back if it would stil be on toondisney with new episods and if so when would this happen?
There are no current plans to bring Gargoyles back. For now, it's just a dream I have. Not completely unrealistic, but still a fantasy.
is there a chance gargoyles will be aired again?
I hope so.
IN TURF, BROOKLYN MENTIONS TO GOLIATH, ASKING HIM WHEN DO WE GO ON OUR WORLD TOUR ? MY QUESTION IS, WERE THERE ANY PLANS OF MAKING EPISODES WHERE THE TRIO GOES ON A AVALON WORLD TOUR?
There were plans for Brooklyn to go on a Time Tour that would have also taken him around the world. It was called TimeDancer.
Hello, Mr. Weisman,
I am curious about the Delilah of Gargoyles 2198. You mentioned she is a descendant of the Delilah clone in the original series. How many generations removed is she from the original Delilah? Is she more or even less human than the first Delilah (given the first is around 90% Gargoyle, as you aforementioned)? That's all. Thanks!
Legitimate questions, but ones that I'm not answering at this time.
Hey gang,
Just letting everybody know that I'll be stopping by the Station 8 Chat Room (http://s8.org/chat/gargs/) on Thursday, February 5th, 2004 from 4pm-6pm PST (that's 7-9pm Eastern).
Hope to see you all then.
hello my name is Pete or as my friends call whitewolf. the question i was going to ask is that i have seen all the gargoyles shows on toon diseny and have there's a lot of deleted sceens and that i own the moive and there's a lot taking out why is it that in the show on t.v. is the whoole thing and not bits and pices? Oh one more thing well gargoyles be out on dvd soon.
DVDs should be coming out this fall/winter.
Toon Disney makes edits based on their own Standards and Practices.
The video of the "movie version" of the pilot was edited down for our world premiere. Disney Home Video chose to use this edited piece rather than the full five-part pilot.
can you give me some information on gargoyles for an essay i am 9 years old.
Well, by now you're probably 11. And I'm guessing the essay is way past due.
In any case, could you go back in time and be more specific?
During the Avalon tour, Did the travllers eat any thing during their stops?
I would imagine that on occassion they did. Certainly they did on Avalon between stops.
Here I've been...a fan of yours due to your work on Gargoyles and I never knew you had previously worked on Jem and the Holograms until today. I absolutely loved that 80s cartoon show and I wish they had conventions for it. It was a unique show for its time...with fun and well-thought out story-plots. I was just wondering if you would like to share your brief experience with that show.
Sure. And it was brief.
I was working at DC Comics in New York. I was an Associate Editor there working on books like INFINITY, INC., ALL-STAR SQUADRON, TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS, JUSTICE LEAGUE, YOUNG ALL-STARS, etc. I was also co-writing a book called CAPTAIN ATOM with my friend and partner Cary Bates (whom many of you know as a Gargoyles story editor and writer).
Cary had some friends, former comic book writers, working in animation. So as partners we pitched premises on a number of shows, including TRANSFORMERS, etc.
We only sold one premise: "Video Wars" to JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS.
The premise was approved and we wrote the outline, which was approved to script. I wrote the first draft and Cary wrote the final draft.
I had literally no contact with the people at Jem. Cary did all that.
But that episode was the first time I saw my name on TV. I've still got it on tape.
Hey, Greg!
In your memo for "Upgrade," you mention the following line:
"MONTAGE vs. NO MONTAGE
Sorry. After cuts were made for both S&P and for things that I did not want to reveal, there wasn't anything left. So out it went."
I thought S&P didn't really play a role in GARGOYLES. Do you remember what the cuts were?
Nope.
And I never said that S&P didn't play a role. I said we had a common sense S&P person, Adrienne Bello, whom we respected and who respected us and what we were trying to do.
That didn't mean that she'd let us show Sevarius amputating Hyena's arm on camera.
