I've read that Elisa is based of Salli Richardson. i've been wondering since she is, is elisa's skin dark or white? its hard to tell on the tv but it looks white. which is it??? salli's skin is dark so i was wondering. thanks greg!
GARGOYLES FOREVER!

Greg responds...

Elisa's skintone is very similar to Salli's, I think. Though I may not be the best person to judge this. Elisa's mother is African American. Her father is Native American. She gets her skin more from her father, it seems to me. But she was never meant to be caucasian.

I am a soldier in Afghanistan and was wondering both if and when i could get the series of Gargoyles shipped to me? How much would it cost? and is there a list i could get on to make sure i secured a copy. Time really drags here so all we have to help are tv series and i've been looking everywhere for this series and can't find it.

Greg responds...

Luke,

I feel just awful that this question was languishing here for over a year. I hope by now, assuming your even still checking back for an answer, you've found the discs. This site isn't designed as a clearing house for the DVDS, but there is a link to Amazon.com on this page. They're probably your best bet.

Mostly I hope that you are safe and well and possibly home. My cousin Brian is a U.S. Marine currently stationed in Iraq. I'm very proud of him and of you. My thoughts are with you.

First of all, I just want to say that Gargoyles is the BEST cartoon series ever made! You and your working crew did an amazing job at bringing it to life.

So, yeah. My question:
Why doesn't Elisa ever change her clothes? I know she changes clothes and her closet is probably filled with a lot of black T-shirts and a lot of blue jeans, but she would have looked great in the outfits from the comics. Or at least something similar.

But nonetheless, I LOVE the show and I am crossing my fingers for more episodes!
I also can't wait for the DVD to come out! I am SOO buying it! Thanx for your time. >^-^<

Greg responds...

Well, she did change her clothes occasionally. La Belle Elisa dress that she wore on Halloween and "Eye of the Beholder". The tough girl outfits she put together for "Protection" and "Turf". The clothes she wore briefly in episodes like "Hunter's Moon, Part One" and "Eye of the Storm". The dress she wore in "The Journey". There may be a couple of more examples that I can't think of at the moment.

The short REALITY answer is that redesigning new clothes for her every episode would have been prohibitively expensive and cause multiple animation errors overseas. So we limited her wardrobe changes to situations where story called for it.

Think of her standard outfit as a dramatic conceit.

Within the show, I just think that's a look she's comfortable with. I pretty much where the same outfit everyday myself. Tennis shoes, jeans and a t-shirt. Of course I don't wear the same t-shirt everyday. I have black t-shirts, white t-shirts, red t-shirts. And most of them have some kind of decal or design on them. But...

Anyway, the plan for the comic book is to start giving her a wider variety of costumes. But we still love that red jacket, blue jeans and black t-shirt. So that won't go away.

Tough Love

I've been informed that the Season Two Volume One Gargoyles DVD has not sold as many units as the Season One Gargoyles DVD did. That's not particularly surprising, since it has a higher price point. But let's be honest, the lower sales are putting the release of Season Two Volume Two at risk.

To be clear, I'm not asking anyone to spend money they don't have and/or need for things like food, shelter, education, etc. But if you've just been lazy and have been putting off buying the darn thing... well, pal, help us all out by ponying up sooner than later.

And ALL OF YOU -- PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

It is NOT a given that Season Two Volume Two will come out!

When Gargoyles return will the the show be focus on the Manhattan Clan or will we see further adventures of the other clans and introduce new clans in the show also I like to see the never before seen korean and chinese clans.

Greg responds...

Given enough ISSUES of the comic book, I plan to get to all of the above and much more. But unsurprisingly, the initial focus is on the Manhattan clan.

I know you have plans to release gargoyles on dvd. do you plan to interview cast and crew for the dvd? I have contact with sarah douglas. she appeared in MIA. She is doing her first commentary track with conan the destroyer collectors edition from the UK. Its a region 2dvd. I have more info at my site: www.angelfire.com/ca4/sarahdouglas
was curious if you want to interview or something with sarah for the gargoyle episode of MIA?

Greg responds...

The choices of who to include on the DVDs were not really up to me. I made suggestions. But the final picks were decided based on a combination of BVHE's decision and availability on the tight schedule we were working on for both of the first two DVD releases.

It would have been great to get Sarah, great to have gotten a ton of actors from the show. But they didn't want a gang of thousands. So our focus was on regulars. People who contributed a GREAT deal to the project. Not just one episode.

So on the first season DVD you have myself and Keith "Goliath" David and Frank Paur.

And on the second season Volume One DVD you have myself, Frank, Michael Reaves, Jeff "Brooklyn/Owen/Magus/Bruno" Bennett, Bill "Broadway" Faggerbakke, Thom "Lexington" Adcox, Edward "Hudson" Asner and Brigitte "Angela" Bako.

Hey. ive been reading all of this stuff about making lexington gay. i think that would be okay but what if little kids that watch this show would think its al right to be gay? i like that fact by making him gay but if little kids watch it and start to like the fact of being gay thier parents might get mad. anyway i like the idea im just wondering about little kids. GARGOYLES FOREVER!

Greg responds...

Well, you are in essence raising THREE issues.

One involves how Lexington will be portrayed in the future.

One involves what I personally think is and isn't appropriate for little kids.

And one involves how SOME parents might react.

So let's take them one at a time.

1. Gargoyles is owned by Disney, and I'd be kidding you and myself if I didn't recognize that there are certain limits to what Disney will allow. My goal with Lex is to be honest and consistent in HIS portrayal. Not to be titillating (let alone pornographic). Frankly, I wish I had the freedom to be more forthright. Perhaps there's an element of cowardice in my middle ground position. I'll cop to that. But I'm just trying to tell stories honestly. I face restrictions. I live with those restrictions. What that means practically, is that few people beyond the hardcore fandom will see Lex's orientation as any kind of issue at all.

2. Personally, I think little kids should (a) know that there are homosexuals out there and (b) know that they are just as human (or gargoylian) as anybody else. They aren't "sinners" or whatever other fill-in-the-blank name anyone feels like throwing around irresponsibly. That's just my opinion, but it is one that I feel strongly about.

3. Certainly some parents would disagree with me. Others wouldn't. But this brings our circular discussion back to the beginning. There isn't going to be anything in Gargoyles for parents to object to. We're not going to be depicting homosexual sex anymore than we're going to be depicting heterosexual sex. And unless the climate in our country changes considerably, we won't even be discussing the issue. I'll simply try to be honest in the depiction of my characters, whether or not I feel those characters are gay or straight.

Todd Jensen writes...

A long while ago, somebody asked you about what elements that you're strongly opposed to had been brought into "Gargoyles", and you said that illiteracy was one of them. Now, this clearly showed up in "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time", with its point about how being able to read was important. But it recently occurred to me that the dangers of illiteracy showed up in another episode: "Awakening Part Two".

When Hakon tears a few pages out of the Grimorum and burns them (among them the counter-spell), he says sneeringly about the spell book, "Makes me glad I can't read." Thus, Hakon's illiteracy (and pride in it) is tied in to the destruction of the counter-spell, which results in the Magus being unable to undo his spell on the gargoyles, meaning that they're trapped in their stone sleep for the next thousand years.

I don't know whether you'd consciously planned for Hakon's illiteracy to be a factor in his act or if it was just a "fortunate accident", but I did find it interesting enough to mention it.

Greg responds...

It was VERY conscious. Long before "Lighthouse" was a glimmer in my eye, that was a message that I tried to get across with Hakon.
