Merchandise/toyline? writes...

Could you/would you be interested in spearheading a push to create new merchandise for the Gargoyles franchise? In the interest of proving it as a still-viable money-making franchise for a possible reboot/proper season 3 but also for us fans that are lacking modern representations of those beloved characters. I myself went well out of my way to aquire an enamel pin (unlicensed I'm sure) only to have ANYTHING featuring Goliath in my possesion.

Greg responds...

I think spearheading merchandise is premature. Our best bet right now is that Gargoyles will soon be streaming on Disney+.

If fans (old and new) binge that, we'll be in much better shape on all fronts, including merchandising.

Hi Greg, big fan of your work and excited for the new season of Young Justice after quite a break.
Now for the questions:
If you could magically pick another one of the shows you've worked on to bring back, but could only pick one, which would it be?
2. Why this one? Unfinished stories, fond memories of working in it, etc?
3. Realistically, considering factors such as all the politics, the fan base, etc, in your opinion which show would you say would be most likely to come back (even if it's a one in a million chance) and which is the least likely?

Greg responds...

1. Gargoyles would be my first choice.

2. All of the above. It's still my baby.

3. Gargoyles is most likely, especially with it appearing soon on the new Disney+ streaming service. Spectacular Spider-Man is the least likely, as the contractual problems between Disney, Marvel and Sony make it nearly impossible.

Grand Rapids Comic-Con Journal
October 21-23, 2016

This past weekend I spent three days at the Grand Rapids Comic Con where I finally got my chance to meet Greg Weisman. I've been following him at Station 8 for almost twenty years, but I never made it to any of the Gatherings so I had never met him in person before.

After weeks of anticipation Friday came. I took the afternoon off work and set out for the convention center, ten minutes from my house. Comic Con is a different world; there were a lot of people wearing costumes, some quite impressive and others not so much. Harley Quinn (Suicide Squad version) is the most popular this year.

I grabbed a program, checked the map, and made a beeline for Greg's table. I arrived to find him talking to a Penguin. (Not the flightless Antarctic bird, but a man in a tuxedo wearing a pointy rubber nose and carrying an umbrella.) I circled around a few times, watching for my opportunity while trying to remain inconspicuous. The Penguin and his friend finally walked away and I stepped up to the table.

"Hi, I'm Phil," I said.

"Hi Phil," he replied. He pointed out the scripts, books, and posters he had for sale. "Let me know if you have any questions." (Do I have questions?!)

He was responding to an important text on his phone, so I hesitated for a moment. "I'm a big fan. I've been following you on Ask Greg at Station 8 for almost twenty years."

He looked up at me. "Oh, you're *that* Phil." He shook my hand.

I don't remember what I said next. Something fanboy-ish, I'm sure. He smiled. I didn't know what to say next. He didn't seem to know what to say. It was awkward. Very awkward.

I told him I would see him again soon, since I had a lot of stuff for him to sign, and walked away. Then I remembered that I wanted a picture to send my daughters (who were driving home from college to meet Greg on Saturday) so I went back. He came out from behind his table and we took a selfie. He looks a little uncertain in the picture.

After walking around a little more, I left to pick up my teenage son, Henry, from school and bring him back to the Con with me. We explored together, commenting on the interesting and the weird. He seemed a little overwhelmed.

We passed by Greg's table again and met Mara, who was there with Greg. She was easier to talk to than Greg. I introduced Henry, and mentioned that he was a fan of Young Justice. Greg told us about the Young Justice presentation he was doing that evening. Henry looked over the scripts and art prints Greg was selling and determined how much money he would need to bring the next day. Then we continued on our way. It was less awkward this time.

Henry and I went to the Young Justice presentation. To be honest, Young Justice never grabbed me, despite Greg's involvement. (I'm more of a Marvel fan.) But it was enjoyable nonetheless. Greg is much more personable and engaging in front of a group. He talked about the strategy for getting Season 3: binge watch Netflix and buy the comics online (so WB sees the money).

After that, the Con was winding down for the night, so we drove home. Henry asked to watch Young Justice again on Netflix that night, but there was homework and housework to do. He also asked how he could get the Young Justice comics in time for Greg to autograph them.

Late that night my two oldest daughters arrived home from college with five friends. Saturday morning eleven of us were ready for Comic Con (my wife and I, our four kids [three daughters and a son], and five college friends). My girls all wanted to dress up, but there was a bit of conflict over who would be what character. The older and younger ended up both going as Elisa Maza, while the middle one painted a blue fox tattoo around her eye. Henry was planning to wear a Star Wars T-shirt and carry a lightsaber, but his sisters pressured him into painting three red stripes on his face and going as Young Gillecomgain. My oldest daughter's boyfriend wore a Gargoyles T-shirt that we later realized was not official merchandise. We were ready to go.

Upon entering Comic Con on Saturday we headed straight for Greg's table. I introduced my family and Greg seemed a little overwhelmed. My daughters were all speechless and my oldest gave a fangirl squeal. My wife (who only came along so she wouldn't have to spend the day at home alone) asked Greg about his convention schedule and how many he goes to each year. They had a normal conversation, no awkwardness at all.

During the course of the day we stopped back at Greg's table several times. We bought books and scripts and art prints. We had him sign stuff we brought from home: DVDs, comics, a Gargoyles picture book, and printouts of "Three Brothers" and "Hyppolyta" (which Greg said he had never signed before). I tried to get some clarification on the Percival/Duval/Peredur relationship, but all Greg would say is "All things are true."

We went to a panel that afternoon led by Comfort Love and Adam Withers. Greg was participating and when we trooped in a few minutes before it started he pointed us out to his fellow panelists. Later in the day when we walked by Comfort and Adam's table she recognized us as "Greg's posse" which my daughter thought was the best moment of the day.

We couldn't make it Sunday morning, so I missed Greg's presentation on "TV Production from Beginning to End" but I was there in the afternoon in time for another panel with Comfort and Adam. After the panel Greg had to leave soon to catch his flight, so I hurried to his table to buy a couple more things and shake his hand one more time.

Overall it was a fun weekend. Greg Weisman is a celebrity at my house and it was great to meet him. Each time I stopped at his table it was a little less awkward, and I enjoyed talking to him. I still have a lot of questions, but none that I actually wanted him to answer in person. I don't just want to know what happens next, I want to see/read/experience it. So here's hoping for more Greg and more Gargoyles in some form, someday.

Greg responds...

From your lips...

It was great meeting you in person. I hope I wasn't QUITE so awkward or unapproachable. I am better in front of an audience than I am at making small talk. But I get by. :)

Hypothetical question.

ALL of your past and present projects have been renewed, and you have been asked to help them all. Which one would you prioritize, and why?

Greg responds...

Well, as many regular readers of this site know, I'm not big on hypotheticals. Reality is so much more complicated, but I'll give it a shot:

GARGOYLES first, always. We're trying to get another comic book version now. Tweet the hashtag #WeLiveAgain!

YOUNG JUSTICE, second. Season Three is real. It's here. I'm working on it.

I'm also working on the second book in the WORLD OF WARCRAFT: TRAVELER series, THE SPIRAL PATH, and recently completed co-plotting work on THE FALL AND RISE OF CAPTAIN ATOM, w/my old Captain Atom partner Cary Bates.

The third book in the RAIN OF THE GHOSTS series, MASQUE OF BONES, which I still plan to get back to as soon as I possibly can.

Everything else falls into the category of it's just too hypothetical to differentiate. But I'm very fond of THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, W.I.T.C.H., ROUGHNECKS: THE STARSHIP TROOPER CHRONICLES, STARBRAND & NIGHTMASK, anything with the STAR WARS REBELS characters [especially STAR WARS KANAN], 3X3 EYES, DISNEY'S VILLAINS and many others.

And I'm sure Edmund Tsabard would love to finish Last Tengu in Paris.

I have a comment, and a question.

1. I hope you never have trouble finding work, your writing is quite inspiring. I just rewatched and, with great difficulty, reread the comics (hard to find them without paying a month's rent). It's nice to remember why I loved it so much as a kid, and find a lot more to fall in love with, like how I -never- even noticed 'David and Goliath' before.

2. Would you ever consider Kickstarter or Fig in order to get fundage to be able to work on Gargoyles more in some way?

Greg responds...

1. Thank you. I have had trouble finding work at times, but that's the business I chose.

2. I can't crowd-fund something I don't own. And I don't own Gargoyles.

You know, I've thinking/remembering about something lately. Back in 2014, there was an April Fools' joke where can article spring up about a Gargoyles movie in the works. A lot of people believed it. In 2012, Cartoon. Network played a practical joke where it revived the Toonami block for that single night. The feedback it received, after it's cancellation in 2008, were amazing! Anyone looking it up on Wikipedia and who helped with it's revival knew what an impact it made with CN.

So, I thought, "Hey, if something that can happen on CN, where they continue to show really old animes and other cartoons, then why can't Disney stop being such money-grubbers for a single day and do something similar? Like in 2014, pull an "April Fools' joke with Gargoyles and air a few episodes. See what happens, can't hurt, right?"

What do you think? Think something like that could ever happen?

Greg responds...

I don't see any need to tie this to April Fools Day. If they want to test it they can. It's their show to test or not to test. At the moment, they don't seem interested.

And I don't have a clue as to what any of this has to do with Disney being or not being "money-grubbers." That seems beside the point. Like you just want to use every opportunity to take a shot at Disney wanting to turn a profit, which is - frankly - silly. If Disney didn't want to turn a profit, you'd have NEVER gotten Gargoyles in the first place. Do you think they put that show on the air thinking, "Well, we'll lose money on this one..."? Cuz, NO. They thought the show would earn money for the company. And it did. And then they thought they'd have a better chance to earn more money with something else. And we were off the air. It's ALWAYS been that way. Sometimes, that helps us. Sometimes, it doesn't.

Hi, Greg. Gotta question for you: Since Disney cancelled the release of season 2 part 2 due to low sales back in day, and as fans, we openly support the release of the DVD when it finally came out in 2013 to show how popular and profitable Gargoyles is and can be, I'm curious to know know how the sales went.

As Disney only cares for profit nowadays, then it stands to reason that they be considering Gargs for a reboot or SOMETHING is the sales are a bit hit, right? Do you think it's possible for you learn how the sales went, just to see the level of interest for your own show, financially-wise? I got my copies as soon it wasn't in the $100s after its release.

Greg responds...

I don't know how the sales went. I don't work at Disney, and that's not information they share with me. You're as likely to be able to obtain that info, as I am.

When you say, "As Disney only cares for profit NOWADAYS...", I balk. Disney the company only EVER cared about profits, at least since they became a publicly held company (before I was born). But various talented people at Disney - then and now - have always cared about more than that. It's no different now then it has been for DECADES.

And, to be clear, I don't want a reboot. I want to do more of what we were doing. I don't want to start it over, which is what a reboot would be.

Hey, Greg

Both, probably. But I'm not big on hypothetical questions. There are too many variables to answer it with any meaning.

You've said before that Disney is unwilling to sell the property of Gargoyles because they don't want to risk it making money money for somebody else...but that implies that they do in fact think it has the potential to make money. So what is their rationel for not doing something with it for all these years if they think it is potentially profitable?

Have you or anybody else ever offered to fund a project independantly and share profits? Would they even go for that if you did?

Do you see Disney ever letting Gargoyles fall into "public domain"?

It just seems greedy for Disney to hold on to the property with an iron grip so nobody else can use it, even though they have essentially forgotten about it - dispite the fact there remains interest for it by both it's creator and thousands of fans. If you don't think it will make money, then sell it. If you do think it will make money, then for god's sake do something with it. What is their problem...do they just not want to be proven wrong?

Greg responds...

1. Opportunity cost. No one at Disney (that I know of currently) believes they can make more money with Gargoyles than they could by spending money on other properties they own or might develop.

2. I have offered to fund and share profits. They've said no.

3. No. Disney resists letting anything they own fall into the public domain. In fact, they are at the forefront of the corporate movement to allow copywrites to renew indefinitely.

4. Calling Disney 'greedy' is both redundant and unfair. They're a publicly held corporation with obligations to their stockholders. Of course, they are focused on profits.

5. Yes, indeed, they do not want to be proven wrong. If an executive is proven wrong, he's at risk of being fired.

I should note that you sound outraged, and I'm not even a little outraged, even though I'm the creator of Gargoyles. I KNEW what I was doing. I was paid a salary to create something for Disney. And I knew they would own it when all was done. But without Disney, there is no Gargoyles. Or at least not the Gargoyles we all now know and love. And I still have hope that as time passes and executives change over, we might get another bite at the apple. It's not impossible. After all, for years we didn't have the comics or DVDs. And then we did.

The youtube channel watchmojo has just put up a video for its 3.8 million subscribers of ''Top 10 Best Cartoons That Got Cancelled''. it placed your works of art Gargoyles at #5 and Young Justice #4.

How do you feel about that?

Also how would you respond to their comment that young justice fans felt ''cheated and abandoned'' due to it unresolved plot points?

also since its seems young justice is still in the media scope after a year are the chances of a season on Netflix or any form of story completion still being looked into?

Greg responds...

1. Well, I'd prefer the shows were still going, but I'm happy we got the recognition and that folks still seem to miss those shows. No love for SpecSpidey, huh?

2. I think that's unreasonable, frankly. Believe me, I'd love to have done more episodes, more issues of our companion comic series, etc. But nothing is guaranteed to last forever, and certainly no one was "cheated". The fact is, the series didn't have the ratings or the merchandising support to continue. Our fans are wonderful and intense, but unfortunately not quite as numerous as I think everyone believes. It's still a business. And if we don't have the numbers to pay for the series, then that's a damn shame, but that's all it is. To be clear, I'm not blaming the fans; just pointing out that there weren't enough fans buying toys or sitting in front of their sets to keep us on the air.

As to unresolved plot points, would folks have preferred if, for example, Brandon and I hadn't put in that last scene with Vandal and Darkseid? We certainly could have skipped it, and one less thing would be unresolved, but I believe the show would have been less interesting if we made sure not to introduce any thread that couldn't absolutely be tied up at season's end.

3. Okay, there's no such thing as "story completion" for Young Justice. It wasn't designed to ever end. All of us who worked on the series would love to do more, but if we did do more, there would be still more concepts introduced so that whenever we ran out of "more" there would still be loose ends. And so on, and so on, and so on...

Meanwhile, I don't believe either Warner Bros, DC or Cartoon Network has any current plans to bring YJ back in any form. Netflix would be great, but if Time-Warner isn't interested in pursuing the property, then all other considerations are moot.

And "the media scope" is a relative concept. YJ was something special, but it never did Game of Thrones numbers, for example, not in terms of ratings or in terms of pop culture awareness.

Again, it doesn't give me pleasure to say all of this. But the realities are what they are.

Well, I just binge-watched all episodes of Gargoyles on Youtube to relive my glory days of when I was a kid. Thanks for giving me that show.

I know that the answer to "when are we going to get more Gargoyles?" is "Not up to me." But seriously, when are we going to get more Gargoyles! Right?!

OK so to my real questions.

1. Since it is up to Disney, do you know the process they go through to decide if a show or story is worth revising? I'm curious to know what their reasoning is for not bringing it back (I assume it has to do with the almighty dollar).

2.Related to question #1, what can we as fans do to help revive the show or a spinoff. I know it's one thing for us to ask for the show to come back, but that doesn't tell Disney anything. I know in the past you mentioned buying the DVDs. I've been telling my friends who would enjoy it to rewatch it on Youtube (and have their kids watch it too). Is there a certain # of Youtube hits they need before they will talk about reviving it? Or again, does it come back to merchandising?

3.Do you have a guess as to why it's not on Netflix? That's a way more prominent medium (in my opinion) to get people to watch a show and gauge interest. My experience with people and Youtube is that they want 3-5 minute clips, not to sit down and watch an entire episode.

Last thought, Thanks for your work. I just finished Young Justice season 1 on Netflix. Great work on that as well. I'm very much looking forward to Rebels, and as soon as I am employed again, I plan on getting your books (books if it takes me a while).

Greg responds...

1. I assume you're right, but THAT is assuming they've given it any thought at all. I'm not sure they have - not counting the occasional knee-jerk "No Thanks" that I get every time I ask. Otherwise, I've no real idea.

2. YouTube really does NOTHING for us, as far as I can tell. Or maybe they'd help if the numbers were just through the roof relative to YouTube, but that seems unlikely. DVD sales definitely help. Since the new DVD of Season Two, Volume Two is just getting released at WalMart, it could help a ton if those sales skyrocketed.

I should clarify that YouTube helps to acquaint folks with the show if they aren't already fans. That's a good thing. But the numbers aren't close to high enough to help us get MORE material produced.

3. No idea.

Hey Greg, have a few questions on the business side of things:
You've said that Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. insist that Young Justice is NOT cancelled, just not picked up. Even if they do pick it up how would that work?
1. You've obviously moved on to work on Star Wars: Rebels along writing Your Rain of Ghost series. If they were to approach you on continuing the show would you be able to? I mean you've said that you and the production team created a bible of sorts for future story lines and character arcs, so you wouldn't have to start from scratch… but that is a lot of work.
2.Would you continue on doing Star Wars Rebels while someone else worked on the show?(The Goliath Chronicles) Or would you still be allowed to juggle both shows? (As unrealistic as that sounds)
I ask this because unlike Spec-Spidey, which was cancelled for legal reason, YJ had no real reason to end. I'm sure most of us would have been more than content with a continuation of the comics set during season 3.
Lighter stuff:
3. Now that you've finished Spirits of Ash and Foam, are you planning out and writing book 3 currently or are you waiting on the sales numbers on the first two books to get the go ahead and get seriously started?
Thanks for the time. Don't have Disney XD so I'll have to wait to catch Star Wars: Rebels online.

Greg responds...

1. It is a lot of work, so it would all depend on timing. I often have windows of availability, and when these windows open, I'm usually at one or more places trying to get something going on Young Justice or Gargoyles, etc.

2. This is all too hypothetical to answer. I can generally do a comic or two while working on a series, if the schedule isn't too brutal on one or the other (or both). But I can't answer these questions in a vacuum.

3. I probably should wait, since the third book has not been ordered. But I have begun doing the research for Book Three of Rain, i.e. Masque of Bones.

Hello Greg!

Just a quick question this time. The other time I asked you something about gargoyles and you said that you wouldn't write it for free... wich came as a bit of a shock to me as you have said before that it is your baby proyect.

It's understandable as this is your job and main source of income... But I have to wonder if you would ever have or if you have a personal proyect wich you would do for free.

You deserve every cent you get paid but.. Many (amateur/fanfic) writters write stories for fun and I wonder if this is the case with you. thank you!

Greg responds...

I don't write for fun anymore. To be honest, it's too much like work.

I don't write for free, though I do (occasionally) write "on spec". That is, I'll write something that has the chance of paying off later, even if no one is paying me for it immediately. For example, my first novel, RAIN OF THE GHOSTS, was written on spec. (And took over a decade to pay off - minimally.) The second book in the series, SPIRITS OF ASH AND FOAM, was not written on spec. My publisher, St. Martin's Press, ordered it. The third, MASQUE OF BONES, which I've barely begun researching, will also be written on spec, unless St. Martin's Press decides to pick it up.

But the big difference with those books, over something like GARGOYLES, for example, is that I OWN the RAIN property. I don't own GARGOYLES or YOUNG JUSTICE or WITCH or THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN. It would, frankly, just be foolish for me to invest my time (which is money to me) in something that isn't mine.

GARGOYLES is without a doubt my baby. I feel that strongly. But it doesn't change the hard, cruel fact that I hold no ownership in it at all.

Hello greg

You previously said that you don't like gran finales and you don't intend to really give closure to any of your shows/stories. Not even gargoyles that as you described it is your "baby" even if you don't own it.

Does that mean that we will always get cliffhanger endings from your tv show when they get canceled?

What about your new book series, will it end in a cliffhanger too?

As much as I am a fan of your stories Greg, It feels empty not to have any closure at all.

No offense but basic story telling has beginning-conflict-resolution and as fans we never get to see a resolution of the overall plot.

I mean having an ending that gives the illusion that "the story never truly ends" is great (that's not what I am critical of).

But I think that not having an ending that acknowledges that the story has to end for real life reasons(maybe becuase you simply can't write stories forever, becuase you aren't getting more episodes, becuase you have to move on etc)... is disrespectuful to your fans that expect to have a complete story.

Take JLU unlimited ending. It even ended with wonderwoman saying "...and the adventure continues" and even left two unresolved plot points, But at the same time it ended the main plots and acted as a send off/good bye to it's fans and it didn't feel empty.

Sorry for being so critical, you are a big inspiration and even if I don't agree with you always I think you are a fantastic story teller (an inspiration for me in fct) and I am planing on buying our new book.

Greg responds...

I NEVER leave a season with a cliffhanger.

I ALWAYS leave a season with open-ended closure.

I don't mean to sound disrespectful to you or any of my fans, but that's how my mind works. If you don't like it, I can't really help you, because you'd be asking me to change the way I tell stories.

But perhaps we're not so far apart. You cite the JLU ending, which I haven't seen. But you state that, in essence, it has open-ended closure, even noting it had unresolved plot points. That's EXACTLY what I do at the end of EVERY season. Not everything is going to be tied up into a neat knot, but every major plot point of that season will be, as happened at the end of Gargoyles, WITCH, Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice.

So what exactly are you looking for from me that's any different?

And thank you for buying RAIN OF THE GHOSTS. It's much appreciated! Sincerely!!

You have been responsible for two of my favorite shows--Gargoyles and Young Justice. They have brought me much enjoyment and I thank you greatly for that. You a writer of the highest caliber, able to write deeply intrinsic plots and characters who are both philosophically intelligent and comically amusing. Your talents are recognized not only by your fans, but also through organized bodies with highly publicized awards, such as the Emmy.

So quite objectively, your work is very good and many people enjoy the shows you produce. Why is it then, and I ask this with as minimal offense as possible, that your shows always seem cut tragically short?

Gargoyles and Young Justice both deserved additional seasons, yet the cries from fans seem to fall on deaf ears. Are network producers really so blind?

Greg responds...

I'm not sure the Emmys have recognized my talents... but I'm glad the fans have.

The thing to keep in mind is that MOST shows don't go on forever, and few even go as long as their creators would like. My situation is not unusual at all.

It's been quite a long time since I've written anything to you, but after seeing the kickstarter website you directed us to, I had to say something. I am amazed at what was accomplished with kickstarter and the Veronica Mars movie. It certainly does bring hope back to those who have been waiting for that hope to pay off. I know that this has brought about some thoughts for you to consider with past shows you have worked on. I am sure if you have plans to incorporate kickstarter in any way with one of your past shows that we'd be the first to know. All I want to say is that I am a Gargoyles fan to the bitter end and that I hope this could be something to put faith into, whether that means bringing back just the comics or even in the long run the tv show. I know you have some of the most loyal fans that are ready to do their part to keep Gargoyles alive, and I will be one of them. Thank you for your exceptional work on every show you work on, especially Gargoyles. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I am ready to see it reawaken.

Thank you for your time and your thoughts,

-Charisma82

Greg responds...

Thanks. I'd love that. But of course, to put up a kickstarter for someone else's property (like Gargoyles) requires the permission of the actual owner of the property (in this case Disney). And the studios don't seem to want to pursue that avenue at this time.

This isn't a question, but I felt I had to write about this. I just saw your post about the site 'kickstarters' and I just want to assure you that I, at least, would DEFINATELY throw money at any of the three shows you mentioned (Gargoyles, Spectacular and Young Justice). Initiatives like that, where audience and creator 'cuts out the middleman' have always been my vision for the future of entertainment. Your shows in particular would have top priority for me.

Greg responds...

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I think Veronica Mars is proving the exception to the rule. Studios don't seem too anxious to go this route with properties they own and control.

1. I'm sure it would bug me. Which may not be fair, but there it is.

2. That's for Disney's lawyers to decide.

Hey Greg! I know you personally don't have much say in this, but don't you think Netflix (streaming) would be a perfect home for the run of Gargoyles? Netflix is finally starting to put tons of Disney stuff up, and being that Gargoyles run was never finished on DVD...

Anyway, just an idea if anyone should happen to ever bring it up to you! I think it would find a lot of new fans on netflix, just like a lot of other cult TV shows.

Hey Greg I just wanted to ask you if you have ever thought on finishing writing all your stories in case you never got to finish them in your life time?.

I don't want to be pessimistic. But just like Moses wasn't able to be on the promised land...

I recall Tolkien had the same issue with his unfinished tales. It would be cool if you at least considered finishing gargoyles. Many of your fans would be grateful if we got to know the full story :)

Greg responds...

I'm not sure what you mean by "finishing"...? I mean, just for starters, what medium are you referring to? It's not like I can just magically whip up some cartoons for ya.

But (1) let's start with this notion: it can't be done. Because my mind doesn't work that way. No matter how much I wrote on Gargoyles or Young Justice or SpecSpidey or WITCH or whatever, those stories and those characters would simply inspire new stories and yet more characters. To me, the universe (any universe) doesn't come to an end, so how could I ever bring any of theses sagas to an end?

(2) I gotta earn a living, pal. I don't own Gargoyles. For me to spend unpaid time writing stories that I can never publish, is, I hate to say it, even dopier than a doing post-production on a series for free. And there are limits to even my dopiness.

VERONICA MARS on Kickstarter

VERONICA MARS on Kickstarter

So I've always been fairly dubious about Kickstarter. I found the websites overwhelming and off-putting.

But my brother Jon just sent me the link below, and I actually found myself pledging $50, which is WAY out of character for me.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559914737/the-veronica-mars-movie-project

In part, it's because my daughter Erin and I are both massive Veronica Mars fans. And in part, it's because if this works, it opens up a whole new realm of possibilities.

Gargoyles on Kickstarter? Spectacular Spider-Man on Kickstarter? Young Justice on Kickstarter? Today it seems just a little less nutty than it did yesterday.

So check out the link. If you love Veronica Mars like I do, pledge what you can - because, damn, I want to see that movie - but even if V is of no interest to you, check out the link anyway. It's definitely giving me... thoughts...

It isn't really much of a question, but all in all, I just wanted to say "Thank you". Thank you for all the high quality shows you produced that enriched my childhood and still give me intelligent and gripping entertainment in my favorite media, animated shows, as an adult.
Most off all, I also wanted to express my admiration for your resolve. While privately I may often joke bitterly about the "Weisman curse" whenever one of your shows gets unfairly canceled way too soon despite (arguably) having the best quality in the entire program. You will always have my gratitude for continuing to produce great shows despite all the stones placed in your way.

As for questions:
1. If you had the means to, would you do a Young Justice/Gargoyles Crossover?
2. Sorry to bring up this unfairly missed opportunity gain, but if you had remained on the staff for "The Roswell Conspiracies", do you think that show would at some point crossed over with Gargoyles?
3. In the spirit of question one, do you think Demona would make a good Red Lantern?

In any case, once again, thank you. Thank you for raising the quality and complexity of the already great W.I.T.C.H. cartoon, thank you for producing the best animated Spider-Man series to date, thank you for bringing Starshiptroopers to the screen in the way it should have been in the first place, thank you for doing such a great job with Max Steel, thank you for doing a huge part in keeping animated DC material extremely high quality, especially at the moment, and of course, thank you for Gargoyles, probably my favorite franchise ever, and I am rooting for you to one day get it back and do more wonders with it.

Greg responds...

1. I don't think so. Maybe as a radio play. But I don't see the two universes as being particularly compatible.

2. No. Two different companies.

3. See, this kinda thing doesn't interest me much. If you think so, great.

Thanks for all your kind words.

As a result I wanted to ask if this meant we might be getting another Gargoyle comic series? Or some form of continuation in the near future? Hopefully with you being a part of it (if it happens)

Hello and salutation! I wanted to ask a few questions related to Kickstarter http://kickstarter.com/ (The getting people to put forward money to fund things thing) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstarter#Top_projects_by_funds_raised

1A. What is your opinion of this 'get fans to fund a project' approach as compared to the current methods? and
2B. Would this be something you might consider using yourself? (gargoyles~)

2. and with your experience with several large companies like disney, marvel and dc. Can you see the likes of them making use of this method to let fans simply fund a project they have interest in instead of risking their own money on a project or getting financiers?

3. and this is kinda unrelated but are there any questions you WANT people to ask? I know you have in the past mentioned questions you dislike (and im pretty sure someone asked about which questions you like to receive) but im curious if theres a subject that the fans have overlooked that you would be overjoyed to discuss and answer questions regarding

Thank you and good luck working your way through the steadily growing list of questions~

Greg responds...

1A. It would seem to me that the money required would be prohibitive - particularly if one is talking about raising money for a property like Young Justice or Gargoyles that is owned by a major entertainment company. I can't see them relinquishing control of their Intellectual Properties (I.P.) for ANY price.

2B. What does "consider using yourself" mean in this context? How can I solicit money from anyone for an I.P. (like Gargoyles), which I do not own?

2. No, I can't. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't see it.

3. I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

Wow! Is it hard to keep up with even the questions to post new ones. Thanks for reopening the queue!

Condolences on the lose of your Grandmother. I remember the months before my grandmother died how she had retreated into herself and was all but unrecognizable, than all of a sudden came back to herself for a week or two at the end. I still treasure it as a great gift that we were reminded who she was before the end. She was a good deal younger than 100 so we were not quite expecting the end, but I can understand what you mean by feeling that the person you love is already on the way somewhere else. I am glad you have so many years and so many wonderful memories to look back on.

1- I see someone already asked if you can explain some of the terms you used when you broke down the stages the of episodes in progress. He mentioned ‘online’ in particular. If you didn’t already do so, can you also define ‘slug’?

2- I know you prefer to record the voice actors together in conversation, unlike many other cartoons that record the voices in isolation. In live action tv and movies are recorded out of order, that’s the most efficient way to use the sets and actors. Since there aren’t sets for cartoons, and you prefer to have all the actors together anyway, are the scenes more or less recorded in order?

3- You mentioned in the past moments when stories just come together and surprise you- when the next event seems to announce herself, unplanned but seemingly totally organic to the story. Like when “Owen is Puck!” announced itself. Or when you kept hearing “Thailog” when the video was being rewound. Did you have any such moments for Spectacular Spiderman and the other shows you worked on? Have you had any with Young Justice yet? Can you share any if they’ve already happened?

4-One last question for this catch-all batch... what do you think of the new DC Nation shorts? I’m not crazy about loosing the opening credits, but I love shorts and think it is an easy trade. I love that they are all different and playful and yet often also a series. My favorite so far is the one with Batgirl and Supergirl trying to convince Wonder Girl to ‘borrow’ Wonder Woman’s invisible jet. (Oddly I have become used to (and approve) on Dianna being portrayed as someone from another country, with a light to strong intonation of something foreign, but it never occurred to me the same would apply to Donna.)

Begin pontification: I’ve never loved the Teen Titan cartoon, (plenty to like, but never loved), but I love the fact it is turning up in the shorts. Back when Disney XD was Toon Disney I wondered why they didn’t run shorts. (To be fair I didn’t have a TiVO at the time and it was possible they were already running the “Have a Laugh” abridged classic shorts as well as Shaun the Sheep. But they weren’t running any new material.) It seemed odd to me they were trying to compete with the Cartoon Network’s reach into the older demographic and didn’t, for instance, declare one night a week the 10 o’clock older folks movie night, (say a Miyazaki flik), and intersperse it with shorts- gorgeous, varied, counter expectation shorts like they gleefully did for Fantasia 2000. (I had the idea a long time ago.) If some of those shorts were back door pilots...great. It worked for the Simpsons They could have led to another late evening night of new programming of new shows. They couldn’t compete with cheap nostalgic cartoons or crude adult ones because that just isn’t Disney. Disney can never put out a Family Guy type show under the Disney label. Maybe they could do it on ABC, but not something with Disney in the name. (Even Miyazaki’s Princess Monenoke had to be released in the US under the Miramax label because a PG-13 cartoon would be problematic under the Disney label.) It a rather obvious route for a high end cartoon station to go and might have netted a few Oscars away from Pixar. Or perhaps more for Pixar. End pontification.

Of course it would have been an ideal place to run a little Gargoyle related short. :)

Greg responds...

1. A "slug" is the section of action BETWEEN lines of dialogue. A "slugged board" is a board that's been timed, i.e. the time for each action has been calculated - and since each line of dialogue has also been timed - you have an exact length, and you know whether or not your episode is going to be long, short or right on the money. If it's long or short, we need to cut or pad to get it to time.

2. Generally, yes. But for example, I poked my head in at a recording on Monday for "Beware the Batman". And there was one actress at the record who was only in one scene, and it happened to be the last scene. So after the rehearsal, they recorded that last scene first, so that the actress wouldn't have to sit through the entire record. It's a courtesy thing. Other times, it may be a scheduling thing. But, again, generally, we record the whole episode from start to finish.

3. It happens all the time. I wish I could remember a specific example from Spidey, but nothing immediately comes to mind. And it's too soon to discuss this stuff on YJ.

4. I love DC NATION. Sincerely. I think some of the shorts have been great, and some have fallen a little flat, but in general, I LOVE the FACT that they're doing the shorts. I just wish they'd expand DC Nation to two hours or something.

5. I'm game for ANYTHING that brings me back to Gargoyles.

Is there any reason to think that we might have more success in getting Disney to release the rest of the series in some kind of streaming format? I don't know all the cost calculations involved with the decision not to produce the second part of season two, but it seems like there are more opportunities on streaming for releases that may not make it with DVD production costs. So I watched Gargoyles as a kid, you know on Disney channel at two in the morning, and needless to say at that time I didn't really appreciate it for everything that it is. It seems that in the past few months after I found someone with the full episodes on DVD, that all I've been able to do in my spare time is watch them, I also ordered the comics as soon as I realized they existed! Anyway, I wanted to know if you had any future plans of trying to continue the story? Or if anything is in the works? I have seen it asked before but a while back, so I figured I'd give it another go, I compeletely understand if you don't anwser!

You've said yourself that The Goliath Chronicles isn't canon, so starting where you left off (before The Goliath Chronicles, and the end of Hunter's Moon, I believe) might leave a bit of confusion in the franchise. I noticed in these that they had a bit more mature nature to them, in the obvious form of blood, cussing, etc. I also noticed they were more mature in more subtle ways, such as Cold Steel's question about if human necks still sounded the same when they snapped after 1,000 years.

Assuming that Gargoyles got another kick off (hopefully in less that 10 years like we had to wait this time), would you struggle to keep this more mature nature of it even if it were put back into the cartoon medium on children's television?

I was wondering if you knew what it would take to purchase the rights, not just the license, of Gargoyles from Disney. I imagine quite a bit of money as well as other possible bargaining chips would be involved, aside from legal. In addition to this, if someone did buy the rights to Gargoyles, would you be willing to work with him or her?
I cannot think of a Disney related prescient where someone bought the rights to a Disney property but I can think of several non-Disney related cases.
It is also surprising to me (although only to the naive side that likes to believe Disney plays fair in business) that you have no true legal claim to the Gargoyles property.
All this comes down to is that possibly, someday when my income has reached that level (hopefully within the next decade[I may as well be a Vanderbilt]) I would consider, if someone else already has not, purchasing the rights. And if it is not I who manages it, I hope someone who is willing to work with you and your vision does buy the rights so that more stories can be told from your vision.

As I've said many times before, I doubt it's for sale. Not now. Not ever. If it were, I'm sure the price would be VERY high. I have no way of guessing at what that extremely hypothetical number would be.

In addition, it defeats the purpose of this website if I'm responding privately. I'm not sure why you'd have to translate the complete site. Hello. I have a very curious question. If you ever do Gargoyles again, would you plan to have certain Disney or different Special Guest Character(s) in the show? If so, what show/game would you think can join the Gargoyles for a short time?

Or if you plan to have a new character for the Gargoyles series, yet you are having trouble thinking of one, would you ask you Fans to draw or think about a new character for the series? If so, you can ask me. ^_^

Greg responds...

I'm not sure what you have in mind here in terms of Guest Stars, but the odds are the answer is no. And for legal reasons I could not invite fans to create a new character for the series.

Hey Mr. Weisman,

Before I ask my question I just want to thank you very much for Gargoyles I'm not sure that any other piece of fiction has stuck with me so profoundly. I thoroughly enjoyed the final volumes of the comic series though I had to stifle back tears as I realized it was over. I will never stop hoping that there will be more Gargoyles for me and my future children to enjoy.

My question is focused around the recent buy out of Marvel by Disney. I don't imagine you have many more insights into it than anyone else watching the news reports but I do wonder if you've thought of approaching Marvel now. Marvel being such a well established comic publisher may see the merit in continuing your run of the comic series. I would hate to see them take it and make it their own of course, we'd never see your true vision of it, but it would be nice to see them allow you to continue what you started. Just something I've been thinking about as I very badly want to see Gargoyles continue.

In a similar line of thought, I asked this question sometime ago and never got a response. Would there ever be a time that you would make a more detailed version of your overall plot for the rest of the series and its spin-offs available to read. The Three Brothers story was great. I'd love to read more like that. I've always feared that if enough time passed we would never get to know what else was lurking in that wonderful brain of yours regarding our beloved Gargoyles. Would you ever reach that point if things didn't look good for the series being continued that you would allow us more bits of your vision?

Thanks,

Lance

Greg responds...

Re: Marvel. Check the archives. I've answered this ad nauseum.

Re: My master plans. I throw out tidbits now and then and if the whim strikes me, I might give out a bit more. But beyond that, any story is only as good as its execution, so I'm not likely to just ... vomit up ... a report of my plans.

Now that Marvel Comics, a company that once published a Gargoyles comic series, and Disney have now merged into one, would there be any chance that Marvel/Disney could bring back Gargoyles in some fashion? Since one of the reasons for Disney to aquire Marvel was to gain access to a market that catered more towards teenage boys, it seems that one of the only action series it produced on it's own could find a new home under this merger.

Also, has there been any update on the release of Season 2 vol.2, perhaps the best string of Gargolye episodes made, again, particularly now that Disney is one with Marvel it could be labeled under a Marvel logo (since again at one time an actual Marvel comic) and gain more fan/dollar support that way.

If you were ever unable to continue the Gargoyles in any way, shape or form other than cartoons, comics, DVD's and such, how would you continue the story? SUCH BIG NEWS

Okay, in the period of just a few days, I have been rocked by two incredible pieces of news.

1. Last Thursday (8/27/09), Vic Cook and I were informed that in exchange for some concession vis-a-vis the live action Spider-Man features, Sony returned the television rights (including the animated television rights) for Spider-Man to Marvel. This took place the day before ComicCon, I'm told. But I was only informed of it this past week.

2. Today (8/31/09) comes the news that Disney has purchased Marvel outright.

NOW, before you ask -- before you post a thousand duplicate and/or overlapping questions to ASK GREG -- let me be clear: I have NO IDEA what this means for either Gargoyles or The Spectacular Spider-Man. Neither of these developments are by definition good news or bad news. Shocking news, sure. But how it will play out for either or both properties is a complete mystery to me. As soon as I have ANY information on either property, I will post it here at ASK GREG. Until then, don't ask. Seriously. Just don't. There's just no point in bogging down the queue with questions I have no answer to. Thank you for your cooperation.

There was time, so long ago, in cities far away that Gargoyles were one of the most watched cartoons in the land. Many seem to ask the same questions on release dates, but I am curious if there was anyway to contact the "mouse" other than by sales. Is there an email address, or physical address that one could "write too", and maybe get the corporate heads to see that the fan base has never left? They have created the sci-fi through movies and tv series in the last few years, I would have thought Disney would want to be in the "game".
I am 28 now and remember rushing home from school just to watch the latest and greatest of this fantastic series.
Anyway, with out the brilliance of the creators and writers, I don't believe this series would have done as well as it had...well with the exception of season three. It was okay, just not up to the standards of seasons 1 and 2.

Greg responds...

Well, I'm sure there are e-mails and addresses you can write to. I don't know them. But a little research could probably reveal them to you. If you do write, I'd recommend being respectful as opposed to hostile. But I still say the best way to get Disney's attention to the property is with one's wallet.

Greetings, Mr. Weisman. First off, let me say that it is an honor to be able to speak to you, regardless of whether my question is accepted or not. I truly wish I were able to meet you someday being a writer myself! If only my living in Puerto Rico were not so bothersome... (why not make a Gathering here? :3)

Anyways, on to my question. We all know the story: for reasons beyond us, Disney canceled the legendary Gargoyles TV show we all know and love, and then we got a certain spin-off fiasco. Then, literally a decade later, we get a gratifying notice: the comics! (which I will definitely buy this summer, hopefully, even if it's only the Clan Building trades.) But now, sadly, Disney's gone EPIC CANCEL on us. Again. Therefore, I must ask this question. Apologies if it has been asked, by the way. Here goes:

Has it crossed your mind to consult other animation companies, such as Viz, Funimation, Man of Action (creators of the excellent Ben 10 series) on acquiring the license off Disney, or perhaps giving the series a new animated show on a different genre, such as anime or CG? Hell, I'm pretty sure people would pack the theater if it were to be turned into an anime or CG, especially given the highly impressionable teenager crowd of today that's into these genres.

If you ask me, Gargoyles is definitely not doing well under Disney's wing- I mean, it was virtually untouched for a whole decade and more and would have been thrown into the dark hell of obscurity were it not for the fans-i.e. us, and I'd like to take the chance to thank the fans for doing everything the fandom has done.

Thank you very much for your time, sir. It has been an incredible privilege that you even read this letter. Greetings from Puerto Rico, God Bless and please keep giving us great stories to enjoy.

Wolf E. Urameshi
Lares, P.R.

PS: Did I mention your Spider-Man series is awesome? If not, there we go. :)

Greg responds...

First off, thanks for all the praise.

You're welcome to organize and hold a Gargoyles Convention in Puerto Rico. I'd be happy to attend too.

The reasons for Gargoyles being cancelled are NOT beyond us. I've laid them out many times, and you can find them by looking through the ASK GREG FAQ. Calling "Goliath Chronicles" a spin-off, isn't really accurate either. It was a third season, rebranded, and with different behind the scenes talent running the production.

And again, to be accurate, Disney didn't cancel the comics. Technically, SLG did, because they could not afford the license under the terms Disney was offering. But sales of the trades will determine whether we'll eventually be back.

And, yes, this question has been asked and answered MANY, MANY times, so check the archives for fuller answers. But briefly, there's no way Disney would release the animation license to another company. And bashing Disney's efforts doesn't further our cause.

I'm loving the effort and detail put into Spectacular Spider-Man! It's incredible how this show stays close to the comics, and somehow does its own thing! I can't find anything negative to say, and I'm accustomed to always finding something bad to say.

But I am curious...what was the reasons behind putting this show (in the USA) on Disney XD? The show started on CW, and it was doing well (wasn't it?) on that network, then BAM...Disney has the show...and their decisions to torment us with how long we have to wait for the season 2 episodes seem so...stupid. What happened? Why Disney?

(We are talking about the same company that screwed us all on Gargoyles after season 2 aftreall, Mr. Weisman...)

Greg responds...

Wow... where to start.

First, thank you for the compliments.

Second, Disney did NOT "screw us all" after season 2 of Gargoyles. That's patently false. One could argue about how good a job they did or didn't do with the show, but no screwing was involved. For more information, read this: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/faq.php?s=realworld

Third, as for Spidey, the show aired originally on KidsWB, which was a programming block on the CW. Halfway through our season, we learned that CW was dissolving the KidsWB block and selling (renting?) the space to 4KidsTV. So KidsWB became CW4Kids. Sounds like nothing more than a minor name change, but that's not true. CW4Kids was a totally different business entity. I had ZERO involvement in or direct knowledge of the negotiations that followed with either CW4Kids or with DisneyXD (or with Cartoon Network or any other channel Sony might have talked to), but I think it's safe to assume that DisneyXD offered Sony the best OVERALL financial deal, which doesn't necessarily mean the biggest episodic license fee. There are other FINANCIAL factors too that I'm sure were considered. But... and I hope this doesn't shock you... it is ultimately all about money.

Hi Greg,

this is the first question i post in YEARS... sure feels weird...

Anyways, with the comics being quite a success (for us - thank you so much for making this dream come true), I finally hope I got how the "spin-offs" were intentioned. Somehow I allways got the idea of them being "real" spin-offs, with as many episodess as Gargoyles. I'm happy BAD GUYS has come out in this form and this capacity, it suits the story, theme and place in the Garg-universe.

With the future of the comics being on-hiatus though, I would love to hear if you have thought of releasing the other spin-offs on potential mediums.

For example, I just read into the 2198 storyline, and it came to my mind that it would make a quite interesting computer game. Not that I want to limit my question to this, but today there are so many different ways of telling a story, that hold many opportunities in character development and storytelling (be it computer games or a youtube series or "Alternate Reality Games" for the Internet, that consist of prequels or spin-offs, as was done with Dark Knight or LOST or Cloverfield - for the film version of WATCHMEN, there'll even be an animated panel-retelling of the chapters - kind of like what is done at the Gathering with the voice-acting

I know Disney still has to give the OK, but have you ever thought about releasing one of the spin-offs on a totally different medium than Comics or TV? And if you did, would it change the "course" of the story?

I hope this is not too off, since I know you're fighting for the comics to stay alive and the DVDs to be released, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Thank you so much,
Have a nice day.

Greg responds...

I'm always open to trying new things. But no company has approached me about it. And it isn't as simple as saying Disney would have to okay it. Of course, they would, but their okay would be contingent on being paid a considerable sum of money... up front.

Boy someone could stand a little meander through the archives. Not saying who. But someone.

Anyway... DISNEY owns Gargoyles and all its spin-offs. Period.

But we are continuing both the original series and at least one (and maybe more) of the spin-offs in comic book form. Check it out!

I'm very happy doing Spider-Man for now, but odds are I'll work on a lot of other series (hopefully), you know, before I die or whatever.
