Greg responds...

There is no official plan for that at this time. But I have hopes, and I am pursuing those hopes on at least three fronts. One way everyone can help is by attending (or supporting) the annual gargoyles convention: THE GATHERING. This year's convention is in Los Angeles. We have over twenty-five guests scheduled to appear from the cast and crew of the show, including Star Trek's Marina Sirtis (the voice of Demona) as well as the voice actors who portrayed Brooklyn, Owen, Broadway, Lexington, Hudson and Angela, among others. We also have many members of the crew coming. Artists, directors, producers, composer, etc. And we're not done recruiting guests. You really don't want to miss this.

And if our attendance goal of 500 is reached, we'll be bringing current Disney execs to the con, to give them a sense of JUST WHAT they're missing, by not putting Gargoyles back on the air.

Hi Greg,
At first, I like to wish you a happy Xmas. Now the question:
If Gargoyles ever gets back (and I hope so), will you get in more things for the older fans, like love scenes and things like that?
CU, John
P.S.: Is it allowed to ramble about The Goliath C`s?

Greg responds...

I suppose it's allowed to ramble about Goliath Chronicles, but I'd prefer you didn't.

As to your question, John, it sorta depends what you mean. If you mean sex scenes, than obviously not. If you mean will we deepen the budding romances between various characters, than yes.

Are there any plans at all to continue Gargoyles? A movie, picked up by another station, has Disney come to its senses?

Also, if the show had continued, what was the direction the Goliath/Elisa thing was going to go?

Thanks!!

Percent-age wise what's the chace of Gargoyles coming back on the air. Is they do come back will the Gargoyle voices still be the same? Will add any new Gargoyles? If so what might be their names? Would it be a female or a male?

Greg responds...

I see no point in trying to quantify this thing. But down the long haul, I think the odds are good that the show will come back. In the short term, not good at all.

If it comes back and I'm in charge we'll be using as many of the original cast as we feasibly can.

There will be some new characters, I'm sure. A lot depends on what form the bring back comes in.

Do you have any plans for the future as far as trying to get the Gargoyles back on the air? I mean have you talked to anyone within the last year or so about it? If so or not what do you think the % is of haveing Gargoyles come back on? If they were to come back on would you re-play sesons one and two and make up a new third seson, or keep the third seson the way it was?

Greg responds...

I am working conscientiously toward getting the Gargoyles Universe going again. I'm not in a positition to discuss details at this time. But I'm attacking the problem on multiple fronts with multiple people. (I know this sounds like vague baloney, but it's not.)

As I've mentioned recently, I haven't decided what to do about Goliath Chronicles, but my current leaning (and that's all it is) is to dump those episodes, and use the internet to handle any questions that arise out of that decision.

Hi Greg,
Well, you have understood me wrong in my last question. I`ve ask you about what spin-off you would choose, if there is too less money, and you could only create one. You thought, I meant even to less for one. But I don´t meant that. I meant, there is only enough money for ONE spin-off show. So you could create one with all the voice actors, special efects etc., but only ONE. So, Which one would you choose?
Hope, now you´ve undertsood me.
CU, John

Greg responds...

Yes. Now I understand.

Right now, it feels like the answer is 2198, because I'm immersed in that. But honestly, I don't care. I just want to get back into these characters, this universe. I'll take anyway in that I can get.

Hi Greg,
Lets say, you get the show back, but Disney (or whoever got the show then) says, you could only make one of your spinoff shows, because of a verry low budget. Which one would you take?
CU, John
P.S.: Thanks for the awnsering of the question with the Wyvern-Gargoyle.

Greg responds...

Wait... the one spin-off will have a very low budget? So I'm making my decision based on which show would work the best on the least money?

That's not a fun hypothetical even if I liked hypotheticals.

Which I don't. Sorry.

Thanks for answering all out questions Greg, mine is somewhat production related. I'm not real familiar with the way Disney handles it's licenses, but It's occured me (and perhaps a hundred others I'm sure) that the possibility exist to see if the License for Gargoyles could be sold to another studio, such Warner Brothers, or Paramount. While the inherent dangers exist of production control being in flux, it might be a start to possibly getting Gargoyles back on the air. Any thoughts on that? Thanks :)

Greg responds...

I think it's beyond unlikely.

First off, I doubt Warners would want it. (And Paramount doesn't even have a studio.) But also, Disney doesn't risk letting others be succesful with their animated product. They'd look too foolish.

Hey just a question that i was thinking about
Why?
With all the talk of starwars (don't worry this question ain't about SW) it made me think, well we all love the original SW-tri. just like we love the 66eps of Gargoyles for us fans it's like a part of culture, well for me it is, and I have read the SW books 80+ and, well SW isn't the same I don't like the idea that Luke, Han, and Leia will grow old and die, latter in the books Chewie dies!!! For some reason I don't want the same thing to happen to Goliath and the trio and Elisa, don't get me wrong but in order to do all this continuing of the story our original cast is gonna grow old and die, personaly I'm glad that the show was stoped, not cuz it was bad, but because it was one of my favorite shows and had great characters and everything, and I don't want to SEE it die.
This probably sounds like sacrliage but I just thought I'd speak my mind. Thanks for your time.

Greg responds...

Not sacrilege at all.

But if you trust me, I think you'll find that it can be wonderful to see characters grow, change, even age, and (in a horrible way) maybe even die, if the deaths seem "right". Plus new characters are always going to be introduced. New characters born. Etc. Kinda like life.

One of the things I'm sure you liked about the first 66 episodes was the way the characters evolved over time and stories. If you liked that, I'm betting you'd like what follows.

When someone mentioned that "Gargoyles" had been reduced to only one episode on Toon Disney, you replied:

"They were showing two as recently as a month ago. Are you sure?"

Well, I'M sure. Sure as heck irritated, too. I think it had to do with them bringing the "Hercules" animated series onto the Toon Disney bandwagon, so they did LOTS of rescheduling. The 'rock block' of Gargs is no more, having been reduced to one ep at 9:30pm CST, and the same ep repeated at 12:30am CST. This especially sucks, since I was just about to start recording them. Now it's gonna take twice as long! :(

Can you suggest anyone in particular to write to in order to get this 'problem' fixed? Edited or not, I want an hour!!

~H\A~

No. I no longer know anyone there. And I'm not sure it's worth the letter writing campaign. Save your energy. I may need it later.

I know _I_ want to. Not up to me. The first season was released on video. The movie you rented, plus four other tapes with two episodes each covering all 13 eps of the first season.

But as far as I know, Disney has no current plans to go beyond that. But we're gonna try and change their minds, particularly at this summer's Gathering in L.A. I know South Africa is pretty far away, but how 'bout making a family vacation out of it?

OK, I've spent the last couple of hours hunting through the Bring Gargoyles Back page. I know what is needed to bring the series back. But here's a short-term question. What is the proccess of getting a television channel to air a syndicated show? I say this because I don't have either of the Disney channels, and considering my current standing with my parents, they won't be willing to fork out MORE money for more stations or satellite service. Perhaps a more general-audience channel, like the failing Fox, or maybe even Scifi, would attract a more general audience and increase viewership. So, who do I have to write to?

Greg responds...

The process is very complicated. But going on Fox and/or SciFi wouldn't BE syndicating.

Syndicating, as I understand it, is market by market, making deals with local stations or station groups. That means you might be on Fox in, say, New York. But in Miami you might be on the WB, and in Dallas UPN. While in L.A. you might be on an unaffiliated independent station.

Syndication is almost dead for kids programming however because Fox, WB and UPN ate up most of the independent stations and station groups. Today's syndicators have a devil of a time "clearing" stations (i.e. getting stations) in a high enough percentage of the country to make the show financially worth pursuing.

Disney currently has five or six distribution outlets for their tv animation.

1. ABC Saturday Morning.

2. UPN Afternoons. (They have a deal with UPN, at least for the time being. In part this came out of the fact that Disney TV Animation was run for a time by Dean Valentine, who then left to become the boss at UPN.)

3. Disney Channel.

4. Toon Disney. They don't currently have the budget for original programming, though that could change over time. And they will be the U.S. home for the new TARZAN series. But they didn't pay the big bills for that.

5. Foreign. Markets outside the U.S. have slightly different wants. They loved Aladdin. I hear gargoyles did fairly well. They payed the bulk of the tab for Tarzan.

6. Home Video.

It is highly unlikely that Disney would sell an animated series to either Fox or SciFi. (Especially Fox.)

Hey Greg:)

If "Gargoyles" ever comes back on the air (new ep's I mean) what do you think would be a good way with dealing with the time loss? IE: Gargs was doing a fair job of fallowing OUR universes time line. Is that 'universe' currently frozen time wise? Example: We get new ep's of 'Gargoyles' in 2002..would it still be 1996 on the show?

probably a dumb Q..I doubt you would skip all that time..but still

Lexy ^-^V

Greg responds...

Most likely, on the air, I would just set it in a vague "contemporary" time. But on the internet, I'd let the fans know it was still 1996, at first. Then quickly, much more quickly than we went back then, I'd bring us up to a truly contemporaneous time. Most of the audience wouldn't know, notice or care. The Fandom would be given the inside scoop on the net. By the end of the First-Season-Back, we'd be back to being in step (more-or-less) with the airdates.

At any rate, that's my current plan.

The net frees me up to do things, that I wouldn't have thought possible four years ago.

This is a question, and a ramble as well. :)

If the show comes back on the air, will it have the same title? Would the show be called "Gargoyles" or end up with another title just like, dare I say, "Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles"?

I hope it is titled "Gargoyles." Most of the shows that are renamed for reasons unknown to me, end up with idiotic titles that include the word "adventure" in one way or another. Those kinds of titles make the show look idiotic, or simply for kids, even if the show is good.

For example, "The New Batman/Superman Adventures." It deals with lunatics, with a dark city, but the title makes it look childish, like it was meant for kids only and not for young adults as well.

Yes, the dreaded word in titles: "adventure." Every time I see that word in a title I cringe. I don't know why, I just do.

There are also other words that can make a show look childish. Such as: "new," "fantastic," and of course, the word "man" after an adjetive, verb or noun. "Batman," "Superman," "Iron Man," "Spider Man," "X-Men".. I could go on and on.

I like shows with short titles; titles that get to the point and are easy to write. And not only shows, but with fanfics, even artists.

If I can't come up with a one-word title for something, I always try to shorten it to two words. Strong, dramatic words that explain the whole thing. :)

There was, and I think there still is, a show on Kids WB with the longest name of them all. "The Cat and Birdy Warneroonie Pinky Brainy Big Cartoony Show." Or something close to that. I think they changed it later on to "Cat and Bunny Superloonie Pinky Brainy Big Cartoony." It was so confusing..

I admit it was amusing to hear those characters sing that name over and over again, along with the little rhymes, but it gets old quickly, doesn't it?

Long words, along with titles, can, at times, be fun. For example, Mary Poppin's Supercalifragilisticespialidocious. :) I used to sing along with her and her friends. Just that word, over and over again. I could never sing the rest of the song, because, well, my English wasn't good enough to understand the whole thing. [laughs]

Back to "Gargoyles." Short title, and it goes right to the point. Not to mention that the word "gargoyle" alone sounds very dramatic and gothic, just like the show itself. :)

Ooh, I'm rambling. Well, back to the questions. :)

1) Will Gargoyles have the same title if it comes back on the air?

2) And if it doesn't, will it have a dramatic and short title?

3) If not, will it have the word "ADVENTURE" on it? [prays that you say yes to #2]

I think odyssey is the best replacement there is for the word "adventure," but that's just me. :)

Anyway, thank you for your time, Greg. :)

Greg responds...

1. Obviously, there's no way for me to know that now. But assuming we're not doing a spin-off series, that would be my first choice. As I'm sure you know, I'm fond of one word titles myself. (Although, I hope I'm not quite as rigid about it.)

2. No, a flacid paragraph.

3. That was sarcasm up in two.

I've just recently gotten into Gargoyles and love it so far, especially Demona. I have to say that I really feel sorry for the way she's been treated by humans in the past and it explains her behaviour when she meets Goliath again.
I loved the animation, even 'Enter Macbeth' wasn't that bad (the storyline compensates for the animation I suppose).
I'd have to say that the overall concept (good monsters fighting evil) was aimed at kids. But the individul
episodes, plots and storylines (including Shakespeare characters and plays) attracted an older audience.
I love the idea of the interspecies romance between Elisa and Goliath. It brings the two races together. This also probably attracted an older audience. If gargoyles was ever revived on television again, would you consider putting it on a channel that more adults watched? It might help the ratings of the show.
I was disappointed to learn that the I was watching re-runs of the show.
I can't wait to see the movie and I'm sure it will encourage Disney to revive the show again.

I'd put the show on whatever channel would take it, frankly.

Comment for thought: When I went to some "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest" sites, I saw a note that the producers had sent to answer questions about how they linked the '90's version to the 70's version of the show. The new writers stated that they, being big Quest fanatics, had looked over the old series, the 80's series, and two movies. They decided that the two movies and 80's series didn't conform to the 70's series so they said that the movies and 80's series would be nice fiction but, as far as they were concerned, never existed. If and when you ever bring "Gargoyles" back, you could just say that TGC were nice episodes but they had nothing to do with "Gargoyles" and you can start from where you left off.

Greg responds...

I'm leaning toward not including those 12 episodes in the canon, and if necessary, using the internet to explain.

But it won't be my decision alone, unfortunately.

Phil (repost by Aris) writes...

Greg, thanks for your time.

I'd like to offer my treatise on the status of Disney TV animation. As a former development exec you're uniquely qualified to comment on my thoughts. This can go under the category: Bringing Gargoyles Back.

First let me say that I became a Gargoyles fan because I was already a Disney fan. I enjoyed almost everything on the Disney Afternoon: Gummi Bears, Tale Spin, Aladdin, etc. (My friends joke that if Pokemon were renamed Disney's Pokemon I'd love that too.)

Although Disney's acquisition of Captial Cities/ABC was a great move for the company as a whole, it was a blow to the creativity level of TV animation. After its first eclectic year of finishing off projects in progress, Disney's Saturday morning lineup hit its stride with "One Saturday Morning." An entire line-up of cartoons on a single theme: pre-teens in school.

I really enjoyed Doug, Recess, and Pepper Ann at first. Now, however, in their third (Doug's fourth) seasons, it's getting a little redundant. Even last week's premier of a new show, The Weekenders, was somewhat familiar. Disney's syndicated series (formerly Disney Afternoon, now Disney's One Too) are also the same ones we see on Saturday.

This doesn't bode well for the return of Gargoyles. Unless your Dark Ages spinoff focuses on the trio as kids, it just doesn't fit into the precast mold. What's a Gargoyles fan to do? Barring Saturday morning and syndication, I see two other alternatives.

First, the hour-long prime-time drama. This is an intriguing and exciting idea. Something new and different. A recent USA Today interview with Bob Iger (Disney's new president) vaunted his support for new and different ideas. A dramatic cartoon, however, may be a little too different.

A second obstacle to the prime-time drama idea is the change in audience. Goliath's clan would require too much review and explanation to get a new audience up to speed. Perhaps one of the spin-offs that doesn't have as much pre-established history would work in this format (Pendragon, New Olympians).

That leaves only one viable option for the Manhattan clan: Toon Disney. The Disney Channel started its sister operation over a year ago to compete with the Cartoon Network owned by AOL / Time / Warner / Turner / Hanna-Barbera / etc. (PS: How does that compare to Xanatos's conglomeration? Sorry. Separate question, separate post.)

There is one primary difference between Cartoon Network and Toon Disney: original programming. As much as I like Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Tale Spin, etc., a man can only watch so many reruns. I see this as an excellent outlet for pent up creativity in the Disney TV animation department. They could go beyond the cookie cutter Saturday shows and direct-to-video movie sequels and do new and different things with less risk, since Toon Disney does't rely on advertising.

Toon Disney could ovbiously benefit from a little corporate attention. Their decision not to show "Deadly Force" tells me that there's not a lot of thought going into programming. Whatever is gathering dust in the Disney and DIC vaults is put on the air as long as it's appropriate for little kids, according to some clerk.

It is my conclusion that the best bet for bringing back Gargoyles is Toon Disney, but only if the Company is seriously interested in making it a competitive challenger to the Cartoon Network and not just a dumping ground for old programs.

This turned out to be a longer ramble than I expected, but thanks again for your time, Greg.

Greg responds...

Toon Disney, as far as I know right now, does not have the budget to make new episodes of ANYTHING.

And I don't see anyone making an hour primetime animated drama anytime soon.

So in the short term, neither of your suggestions seems viable.

But I'm in this for the long haul. And over time, things change. Syndication is dismal, but ABC's Saturday Morning could shake up. Once upon a time, the Disney Channel had no budget for original programming either. Now they do. They currently aren't interested in Gargoyles. (I know. I asked.) But that could change in a year or two. (And if the live-action movie comes out, it could change overnight.) And some day, Toon Disney could get the money to make something.

Even the primetime arena could change.

And tv is no longer our only resource.

So don't give up. Four years ago, I warned everyone that bringing GARGOYLES back had become a long-term quest. So far most of you have stuck with me. Stick it out a few years longer. I really do think your loyalty will pay off.

Glad to see Ask Greg running again! I had downloaded the old archives, (or most of them) sometime last year. I checked periodically and it seemed the page was down. I gave up on the Ask Greg page and only checked it again on a lark. It took me weeks to read through everything!

Oh, a question-

You seem to have a much more optimistic view on the series coming back then when last I checked in. Has something changed? To be more precise- Before you seemed to say "long shot at best for the series in any form, even the live action movie seems dead". Now the movie doesn't sound dead, and the long term revival hopes good, (lost the quote, sorry). I am much heartened, and almost as curious.

I have many more questions to follow, but for now I want to say thank you for doing this, and thanks to Gorebash for running it.

Greg responds...

The movie isn't a lost cause. It hasn't progressed an inch really, but normally after this much time that would result in its death. They'd give up. But they absolutely haven't given up. In fact, they've just hired a NEW writer. Touchstone/Disney REALLY, REALLY wants to make this movie. So that keeps me optimistic. (And the success of X-Men doesn't hurt either.)

I don't love that Toon Disney is editing episodes and refuses to air "Deadly Force". But they ARE airing the show about twice a day. That gives me hope.

I haven't given up in any way, shape or form. I'm still in there trying to come up with ways to bring the show back in some, well, way, shape or form. In fact, I've got a new nefarious plan in the works now with Doug Murphy, a former GARGOYLES (and BAD GUYS) storyboard artist. Too soon to talk about now, but give me time.

The response here at ASK GREG is overwhelming. That means fan interest still exists. And I'm VERY heartened by the continuing success of the GATHERINGS. That gives me hope.

In fact, people ask me what they can do to help bring the show back, and what has become clear to me is that the best single way a fan can help is by attending one or more GATHERINGS. Aside from the sheer FUN FACTOR of the convention, it is the raw numbers in attendance that will help me prove to the powers that be at Disney that the show is still viable and ready to return. Come to Orlando next month. PLEASE. It's gonna be GREAT. Guests include myself, Thom Adcox, Brad Rader and Greg Guler.

And without doubt, plan to come to next years GATHERING in Los Angeles. I guarantee we will have over twenty members of the cast and crew in attendance. And if the fan attendance numbers are big enough, we will bring Disney Execs and show them first hand the opportunity they are missing out on. Do NOT MISS THAT ONE if you want to see the show back on the air.

Hey I'm a realy big fan of Gargoyles and I have two questions.
1. I was just wondering if it were true that there is a Gargoyle movie being made?

2. Do you think that Disney or who ever will ever ask you and your crew to make Gargoyles again?

Thanks for you time!

Greg responds...

1. Yes. It's in development at Touchstone pictures. They have a new writer, Simon Kinberg, who should turn in a first draft script in October.

2. I hope so. I think so too.

Dear Greg,
Thank you so much for responing to my Q's. It really made me feel a lot better to know that my Q's were going to the right place. I've wacthed a few of your Max Steel shows. I think it'll be a great show. But any way on to the Q's.
1. I've looked along the archives and didn't find this question, so here it goes. Is there any way to get the show back up? I've tryed every thing I could thank of! I wrote tons of letters to Buena Vista, and at first they were nice about it then on my, oh I don't know, my tenth letter? They wrote back telling me NOT TO WRITE THEM AGAIN, can you belive that I can't. I've even called Walt Disney, and what about that they put me on hold forever! Okay that felt good getting that of my chest. Anyway if you lost the question it my "ramblings" here it is:

1. Is there any way to get the show back up?
And please don't tell me to look at the archives again. I did't want that to sound rude but it came out rude, sorry.

Greg responds...

1. Uh, did you look at the archive marked "BRINGING GARGOYLES BACK"? I mean I know you asked me not to send you to the archives, but you couldn't have looked very hard. There's an ENTIRE category where I've answered almost every variation of this question.

THe short answer is ATTEND the next two Gatherings. The one in Orlando next month and the one in Los Angeles in the summer of 2001. The best way to get the show back is to prove to Disney that the fandom is huge, intense and ready to spend money on the show. Attend the Gatherings and get as many of your friends to attend with you as possible.

An addendum to my thoughts on DEADLY FORCE:

I share your anger and dismay that Toon Disney is being so small-minded about this. Maybe now's the time to mention something I posted here earlier but was lost in one of the MUCH earlier "no questions in the queue" (sp?) glitch.
I have compiled a list of many of Toon Disney's edits to "Gargoyles" so that I may write a letter protesting each of them. Unfortunately, I don't have the address. Where do I send this letter?

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to use "hot-button" words, such as "offensive" (ie, "I find your edits offensive")?
Thanks!

Greg responds...

I don't have the address, but it can't be that hard to find. Have you looked in TV GUIDE? Or for that matter, on the net?

As for "offensive", it depends on your context, I guess. If you say something like, "I'm sure you're making these edits because you're afraid to offend some people. But I actually find the edits themselves offensive." Then it's probably all right. But I'd tend to keep the "dialogue" professional. NOT CONFRONTATIONAL. They'll just respond better. If you can make the point that not airing DEADLY FORCE is wrong-headed, and clearly explain why, it wouldn't hurt.

1) Anything in the works for you now? I like your style, and would love to see more of it.

And what's this talk of the gargoyle movie?
Please write back thanks.

Greg responds...

Define "near" future? Like in the next couple years. I'd give it a zero chance. Cuz it ain't in production and it takes time to launch (or relaunch) any show. If you mean sometime, than I think the chances go up to eight or so.

Touchstone is developing a live action film based on the gargoyles. They've been at it for years. They haven't given up. But they haven't put it into production either.

Greetings Greg!

To reply to you answer on my "Max Steel" question on 2-23-200:

Some time ago - around mid-1980's or so - Tonka (or Mattel) released a toy line called "Max Steel's Robo-Force"; basicly a series of cylindrical, claw-armed robots whose major gimick was you could attach them to any flat surface via a suction-cup. They had good guys and bad guys, and I assumed there was to be a show made for them, but the toy line never really took off. (This was during the time when shows like "Transformers", "GoBots" and the like were very popular.)

Now for a question:

If you've ever read the book "Planet X" (a Star Trek:TNG/X-Men crossover novel) then you should understand this query: If you ever got around to writing novels or making a graphic novel with Gargoyles in it, would you ever consider doing a crossover story that pits the Gargoyles with another group of characters from another licensed universe of characters (with the creator's permission of course)?

P.S. - Here's to seeing you in Orlando (if I'm lucky enough to get down there). Maintain and Check Six!

Greg responds...

Hey, Stephen, hope to see you right back.

I've never read Planet X. Frankly, it sounds awful. I can't think of two universes less suitable for crossover than Trek and X-Men. As for whether I'd consider it... the answer is maybe. First, I'd love the chance just to be doing garg stuff sans crossovers. (I've got enough ideas to crossover on my own, including New Olympians, Bad Guys, Pendragon, etc.) Then it would depend on what universe exactly we were trying to cross with. Some might be good fits. Some would not. Then the method of crossover would matter too.

As for Max Steel, it sounds like that's where Mattel got access to the name. Nothing else similar. And I'd never heard of it.

Forgive me if someone's asked this before...
I enjoy writing fanfiction, and I've had lot of my voluminous writing printed and shared them with friends. They're all encouraging me to try and get it published. What is Disney/ABC/whoever's policy about publishing fan writing. I know Paramount makes a KILLING on it - every bookstore these days has a whole section for fanfiction in print. I know I'm not the only die-hard GARGOYLES fanwriter who'd like to submit their work for printing, too. It also makes sense to try and bolster public interest in the show until the movie is released and whatever other plans are in the making (if any) for GARGOYLES. Where would recommend we start looking?
(http://gargoyles.web.com - Ladyartemis@cybergal.com)

Greg responds...

Hey, you tell me! If Disney is interested in printing original Gargoyle stories, I hope they come to me first. (Which puts us in competition, I guess.) As far as I know, however, there is no interest currently.

Also, I don't think that what you see on bookshelves is STAR TREK "fanfiction". Though it may seem like it, these are all books written by "professional writers" commisioned by Paramount and/or its licensees. By definition, that ain't fanfiction.

Hi Greg! You've previously mentioned having big plans for the clones that extended to 2158 and beyond, and today you confirmed that some would have children. 1) When you mentioned having plans that extended far into the future, did you mean the present clones or their children? 2) If it's the former, how would they survive that long? 3) Are the clones' children going to remain a separate clan, or will they merge into other clans? 4) Are you going to try to completely nullify what TGC did to the clones, or have you incorporated it into your future plans for them? 5a) Do you have any plans for moving the clones out of the Labyrinth? 5b) If so, where will they move to and why? 6) Will the clones be able to produce genetically normal gargoyle offspring? 7) If you've given this any thought, would the offspring have a parent clone's backwards-coloring or that of the gargoyle one or either of the parents was cloned from? 8) What was Elisa's reaction to finding out she had a clone? 9) If Delilah has a child, how would Elisa react to it?

Greg responds...

1. I'm not sure I understand the question...

2. See the answer to 4.

3. I can't answer this while the clan contest is ongoing.

4. Honestly, I haven't decided yet. Though I didn't care for the episode, it's absolutely one of the easiest to fix. Seems to me the clones could wake up at any time. So if the series came back in the present, I could wake them then. Or I could wake them anytime before 2158. But I figure with Goliath Chronicles it's going to be an all or nothing thing. So I can't make this specific decision in a vacuum. Right now, I'm leaning toward ignoring all post-Journey continuity. But I haven't made -- and probably can't make -- a final decision until I know in what form the series will resurface.

5a. See the answer to 3.

5b. Ditto.

6. Sure.

7. Being color-blind, it's not the first thing I think about.

8. On the surface, she was annoyed with Demona and Thailog, but open to being friends with Delilah. (She had seen the effect Goliath's harsh reaction had with Thailog.) Underneath that think the whole thing made her anxious. I do not think as of "The Journey" she had as yet gone down to meet Delilah.

9. Whoah, you're getting ahead of yourself...

First i would like to say that GARGOYLES was the best show i have ever seen.My first question is have you got any new offers on bringing back the series?Have you tried HBO they picked up spawn which is another kick ass show?I think they would jump at gargoyles and it would give you more freedom. If hbo did pick up gargoyles would the story's be more risky using adult themes such as drug use, swearing, nudity or murder.I personaly would love to see the saga shift into a more adult series.

Greg responds...

First off, no. No one has suggested bringing the show back except me. HBO isn't likely to want it, or to get it for that matter even assuming they did want it. They didn't "pick up" Spawn, they were the ones who brought it to the screen in the first place.

As to whether the show would get "more adult" if we had the non-broadcast freedom to be, the answer would generally be "no". I think the show appeals to adults now, without adding gratuitous elements. I wouldn't shy away from doing a drug story if I had a good story to tell about drugs. Adding curse words and nudity for their own sake doesn't interest me. I like nudity as much as the next guy, but it would have to fit. We basically showed Fox nude at the end of "Eye of the Beholder", because it made sense that she'd have no clothes on after her transformation. But I'm not out to arouse anyone. As for murder, hey, been there, done that.

The show's the show. I'd love to have freedom from standards and practices, but I won't ignore my own standards.

On the other hand, the show might get more mature, in the sense that Goliath and Elisa's relationship would continue to mature. That doesn't mean we'd be showing them engaged in sex acts, but we'd deal maturely with inter-species romance. At least I'd hope so.

Do you still have any contacts at Disney? What I mean is: Are you sitting by the phone (doing other work, of course) waiting for Disney to call you out of the blue? Or do you contact them periodically? It seems they need someone to remind them that they have a hot property in "Gargoyles." They should also be reminded/informed that you have up to seven animated series in various stages of development ranging from "very advanced" to "near complete."

Thanks for your time.

Okay... I know people have asked you this 1,001 times, but it's about a book deal... I mean, Disney does own a publishing company... hell, they more or less own the world. I feel the only reason they don't approach you for anything is that Disney is falling futhur and futhur towards simply a children's media outlet. Think about it, Princess Monoke and Fatasia 2000 were either hardly advertised or shown in such limited release that no one was able to see it. They denounced Kevin Smith's Dogma (which was originally produced under Miramax), which is one of the greatest films I've ever seen.

So, why don't you think the Disney executives don't try to target a more adult audience? Sure, there are early to mid 1990s shows and movies (The Lion King, Gargoyles, to name a few) that do appeal to a more adult audience, but with things coming out such as The Tigger Movie, I don't think Disney realizes what they're missing out on.

Okay, so that was more of a rant than a question, but I'd still like to hear your response...

Greg responds...

I'd like to rant and rave, but it's of limited value. Certain projects are targeted to certain markets. It's ridiculous to think of the Tigger Movie as proof of anything vis-a-vis Gargoyles -- as if we weren't making episodes of Winnie the Pooh at the same time we were making Gargoyles, at the same time we were making Schnookums & Meat, etc.

I haven't seen Dogma, so I can't comment on that, and I also haven't seen Sixth Sense, which was a Touchstone film, but from what I understand, that was a fairly intelligent movie targeted at a non-kid audience. And they're still developing the Garg live-action movie, so they haven't exactly given up on squeezing a dime outta the property.

Disney sees a value in Gargoyles, but not the value. We aim to change their mind. At this moment, for no particular reason, I'm confident that we will eventually succeed.

there like the episode where Hudson fought the Quarymen
blind (forget the name of the episode) and the final episode
which I thought was a great episode.

Greg responds...

I'm sorry, but I wasn't a big fan of either of those. Particularly the last one.

Part of the problem was that the staff of Chronicles took springboards I came up with and then went WAY south with them. If I don't ignore those stories, it prevents me from doing the stories I had planned on doing. If that sets us up for comparison with more sophisticated fans who have seen both, I can live with that.

But at the moment, I'm just blue-skying. Haven't made any final decisions. And obviously won't until reality presents itself.

I'm just responding to your ramblings on 1/24. This is like a conversation type format, right? Just not Novel type.

<<And, honestly, how many of you thought -- even at the very end of "Hunter's Moon, Part Two" -- that we'd REALLY blow up the clock tower? Did you anticipate that the Gargs would wind up back at the castle with Xanatos or was that a surprise? For that matter, in season one, how many of you would have thought we'd have moved them out of the castle in the first place? "Enter Macbeth" represented a defeat of sort for our heroes. Did you see that coming? >>
I'm kind of dense, actually, so I really didn't see that [the blowing up of the clock tower] coming. The first time I saw that it really was shocking. The commercial break was really a good time to think whether or not those missiles were actually going to cause large kaboom of building. Moving out of the castle wasn't as much of a shock, because Xanatos owned it, and as nobody knew gargoyles existed, they couldn't fight his return. As to the means, you caught me there.

As to internet for further Gargoyle explanations, why not? Everybody's going dot com these days. Just put under the big bold Gargoyles in the intro www.gargoyles.com :p

BTW Gargoyles had a sort of Sixth Sense factor that I theorize could've hurt the ratings. The first time you seee an episode everything is mysterious and shocking. The second time around its analyzing everything to see if it flows and everything is accurate. The third time you see if you can catch anything new. The fourth time you sit back and enjoy it. The fifth time it starts to get old, depending on the time gap inbetween four and five. In other words, would you pay to see Sixth Sense much beyond the fourth time? I think if Disney handle Gargoyles like Fox handled the Digimon series it would have lasted longer.
(Show episodes in order on weekdays, with a different running on the weekend. New episodes aired on weekends with commercials at the end of weekday episodes.) Do you agree with my evaluation at any point?

Greg responds...

I've never seen Sixth Sense, though I know the gimmick.

I've also never seen Digimon. And I'm not sure I understand what point you're trying to make about how they air it. We tried as much as possible to air the show in order. Are you saying that was a bad idea? It seems to me that any series might get a bit tired by the fifth viewing (particularly if you just saw it for the fourth time recently). I'm glad that it holds up for four viewings, and is the kind of show that you can come back to after a while and enjoy all over again. Are you saying that Digimon plays better after five viewings? Or are you saying that what works there is that they show new episodes on the weekend? (Cause trust me, I'd love to be making new episodes, but that isn't an option right now.)

Hello mr. Weisman!

Some friends and I were discussing about cartoons and animation the other day. They said that they didn't like Gargoyles because there wasn't enough action and it wasn't fast enough. I argued that Gargoyles had great animation and awesome stories. They replied by saying that stories don't sell these days. I had to agree with that last reply; today we see cartoons with little intelligence with lots of violence. It's a shame that they are the ones that are popular.

So I came up with this question, if Gargoyles or any of the spin-offs were to be brought back, would you make any changes to the orginal Gargoyles we knew? Stories will no doubt be present, but will there be more and faster action?

Thanks.

Greg responds...

I hardly think there's a lack of action in the current gargoyles, no matter what your friends say. I love action. I just like it to be intelligent.

And as I've said <sigh> oh, so many times before, I made the show I wanted to make. If I had the opportunity to do it again, I would attempt to do the same. I have no regrets.

As to stories not selling... I don't necessarily agree with that assessment. But even if I did, I wouldn't sink to participating in the deterioration. I'm a story-teller. That's what I do. What would be the point of me doing the show if I wasn't doing that?

"Faster action?"

1. Not as simple? I'm not even sure what that means. Explain to me how that would work and I'll dive right in and get started.

2. Well, I can hardly say that I've met her, so I can hardly comment on her personality. I literally bumped into her and she was very gracious during the three seconds I was apologizing. She has a beautiful smile, and I was graced with that. And, yes, I was a bit smitten in that moment. So based on only that, I'll answer, yes. Ashley,

What a wonderful post. Thank you.

Disney would never sell the rights, and if they did, lowly me could never afford to buy them. And no one's sorrier about that than I am.

Gargoyles was definitely my baby. (Still is.) Though many, many people participated in raising it to be the child that you saw on television. The basic ideas were mine, but it was very collaborative, extremely collaborative. And in any case, we were all working for Disney, so they own it, lock stock and gargoyle.

As for Titus, well I saw it in a movie theater. It's rated R (or should be) and I don't know how old you are or where you live, so I don't know if it's in your local theaters or whether you should be allowed in or not.

Eventually, it'll be on home video.

If they were to bring back the series, would it pick up where the last episode of gargoyles left off, or would it be sometime later?

Greg responds...

My current thinking is that it would pick up where I left off. That is in 1996. I wouldn't flag that to new viewers, but you guys could come here and find out approximate dates. Eventually (and relatively swiftly), I'd bring everything current. But I'd hate to miss out telling the stories that would have taken place immediately after "The Journey", and I don't believe that nothing at all happened over the last four years.

And, yes, that's a cheat, but I think it's the best possible solution. At least, the best I can think of now.

Hey Greg, if you do manage to get Gargoyles or one of the spin offs(I would prefer Gargoyles 2158, but that's my opinion) would you use the same animation team that did the animation for the first two seasons of Gargoyles?

I'm not sure we could gather the exact same people. And we had multiple teams in multiple countries. Some did a better job than others. Or are you talking about Pre-Production?

PLEASE RESPOND. I want to know if you actually GOT this question. :-)

I got the question. As to you being able to buy all 66 episodes on video:

Not legally. As far as I know, only the first season is on video tape. The five-part pilot cut together as a movie. And then the following eight episodes on four additional tapes. And finding those five videos might take some effort at this point.

But if you post requests in the comment room, there are, I believe, many people willing to tape the show for you for the price of the blank videos and postage.

Given the recent trend in American animation (more violence and other, darker, elements), if there were to be a new Gargoyles series, would it be darker than the original? Or would it still be targeted for a 16 and under audience?

Greg responds...

I don't agree that you've described the recent trend in American animation at all. Quite the reverse, I think there's been a sad backlash -- caused mostly by video games, etc.

Animation is getting softer, not harder. Lighter, not dramatic. The percieved (not real) failure of Prince of Egypt, convinced everyone that drama doesn't play in feature animation. Anime is still seen as peripheral. And the crossover hit is Pokemon, which is as fluffy and light as things come. I can't sell a drama to save my life right now.

As to how that relates to Gargoyles. It doesn't. Not if I was in charge. The tone wouldn't change in either direction. Because the show I made was the show I wanted to make. And that wouldn't change.

Okay, best case senario: you;re given a thirteen episode contract for the restoration of Gargoyles by Disney or any other company airing in prime-time in an hour long format. You get a 2-4 minute intro saying that the series known as The Goliath Chronicles are null and void except for The Journey. My question is: what would you do with your thirteen episodes? Would you carry on the series as it had before, short stories that when looked on afterwards made up a chapter in a much greater tale? Or would you try to cram as much into them as possible, making things possible for the spin-offs and pleasing the fans (Timedancer, Bad Guys, etc.)?

Greg responds...

All right first of all, I love the idea of hour long episodes. I sure as hell don't care whether or not it's in prime time, but it would be great to be able to tell hour-long stories. Hell, I'd be happy doing half-hours as long as I could have as many two-parters as I wanted. (Like for almost every story.)

I'd never want to do something as clumsy as opening with a "2-4 minute intro". See some earlier Ramblings, on my current thoughts on how I'd handle the non-canon material.

But now, on to your either/or question. Although, I object to the word "cram", I'd be attempting to do both of the options you suggested. Yes. Stories that are part of the tapestry. But yes, setting various arcs in motion simultaneously. Mostly to please myself, as I did on my original run, and hoping that, as before, what I want would largely please fans (new and old) as well. Just like I've always done.

It would depend on the show.

I think G2158 would be perfect for CGI. But I'd hate to do Dark Ages in CGI, though maybe not for the reasons you think.

Miscellaneous...

My DC Comics editor finally sent me a few copies of that Justice League comic with the Captain Atom/Gargoyles story. I had forgotten just how many Gargoyle in-jokes I put in that story. There's much more there for a Gargoyle fan then for a Captain Atom fan. Though I think the scenes of Cap kissing Bette (and the mention of Las Vegas) would make a couple people (Simon Del Monte, Melissa Page, for example) a bit nostalgic. I think the story turned out pretty well. Anyway, I'm happy. My editor made a couple small changes. He removed the two references to the year the story took place (1991). And he changed the title. It was called something like: "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence". Now it's called "The Flashback of Notre Dame". Both are accurate, but his is much more clever.

Lately, I've been giving away a lot of ASK GREG tidbits for some reason. Not sure why. I'm just in the mood, I guess. But it suddenly occured to me to register this caveat.

There's canon and there's canon.

As far as I'm concerned the only true canon is the 66 episodes of the series running from "Awakening, Part One" through "The Journey". As many of you know, I don't like to consider the other twelve episodes of Goliath Chronicles to be canon, let alone whatever other stories got published by Marvel or Disney Adventures Digest or whatever.

But to be honest, even some of my ASK GREG answers cannot truly be considered canon. They're closer. But I won't be held to them in any absolute sense. Part of the wonder of producing the first two seasons of Gargoyles involved things discovered along the way. I won't etch things in stone (pun intended) just for the sake of making these ramblings and off-the-cuff answers sacrosanct. If I got the chance to produce the show (or one of its spin-offs) again, I'd ABSOLUTELY incorporate much of what's here. But I'd be a fool not to hold everything up to a microscope and decide with consideration what would and wouldn't be best for the new series.

Having said that, I've been giving some particular thought to G2158 recently, studying timelines for example. And I've changed a few things in my head. Nothing major. But certain things have changed that would in turn effect things in TimeDancer and present-day Gargoyles. Maybe even New Olympians and Pendragon. (So far nothing that would alter Bad Guys or Dark Ages.)

The good news is that none of these changes effect our three current contests. (Wouldn't that be an ASK GREG disaster?)

And all this thought has gotten me thinking about how I might handle a couple of thorny problems in any revival of the original series, specifically the time gap between 1996 and whenever the new show hit the air, and/or the existence of those 12 non-canon Chronicle episodes.

And frankly, I think the internet is the answer.

Goliath Chronicles exists. I can't change that. But I think I can ignore it. For example, if I wanted to do my version of the trial of Goliath -- the one where the question before the court is his very sentience -- couldn't I just do it?

New fans wouldn't know about the Chronicles trial and thus wouldn't be upset about it. Old fans could check here and find out why it was being ignored.

That only leaves a small percentage of people, who, for example, see the Chronicles episode on Toon Disney and wonder about it, but don't have the resources or whatever to find a site like this and learn the rationale. Would they be very put off? Is that too selfish an approach for me to take?

Likewise, the time gap. What if in the fist season, I did that Halloween story I've mentioned before. I wouldn't mention what year it was. For a new audience, they'd just assume that the story took place in say, October 2002. No harm done. But I could post here and tell people it took place in 1996. Then, by the end of the first season, I could have the series caught up to 2002, but still have gotten to do the stories that would have depended (continuity-wise) on proximity to the events in Hunter's Moon and The Journey.

What about that?

I'm very interested in all of your opinions on these notions. Please post them here.

I never pitched G2158 to CBS, because everyone I knew there was booted before I got the chance.

And none of them are back, so the idea that the executives (Judy Price, specifically) who asked to see G2158 would now be interested again, since policy has changed somewhat (though not exactly as you have described it above) doesn't follow. Judy is still gone. Disney still owns Gargoyles and now they own ABC. So I don't see Gargoyles appearing on another network anytime soon.

- A regular as usual 32 page Monthly comic book for 1.99

- An Archie Comic-like digest that would contain various short illustrated Gargoyles stories for about 3-5 dollars

- A full monthly magazine with a few illustrated Gargoyles stories, a few Gargoyles text pieces and some other various materials ala historical exploration material on various elements in the Gargoyles universe (Pendragon, Easter Island, etc) for about 6.95 or so

- An every few month's Trade paperback containing a whole storyline and a short text piece ala something like Usagi YoJimbo Trade paperbacks for 15 dollars.

Well, I'd go for any of the above. Whatever we could get. (Though the last options seems impossible from a deadline stand-point. Are you sure those Trade Paperbacks aren't gathering together previously published stories.)

UPDATE

Hi Gang,

I'm back. And determined to pour through these questions. I can't believe I'm still backlogged until JULY!!!

But first, let me give you a quick update on what I've been up to recently.

STARSHIP TROOPERS
Post-Production has been completed on my first arc of stories. They are all set on the jungle moon TESCA NEMEROSA. I think they turned out wonderfully. I'm still very proud of the writing, but I'm wildly impressed with the CGI. (And yes, there are a few small things that bother me, but...) Overall, I think it's a very powerful set of stories.

MAX STEEL
We've completed writing and recording all 13 episodes for the first season. Post-production should begin after the first of the year. The CGI series should premeire in February on the WB's Saturday Morning. And now that the heavy lifting is done, I'm all but unemployed, which means I should have plenty of time for ASK GREG.

NAZCA
A good friend of mine did the English dub for this Japanese Anime series. Thom Adcox does the voice for one of the leads, and I do a few incidental voices here and there. (Yes, the man who brought you "Nice Mask!" and "Father, the rockets aren't working!" is back behind the microphone. God help us all.) It's available on home video in stores starting mid-January.

JUSTICE LEAGUE GIANT
As many of you already know, I did a CAPTAIN ATOM/JLE/GARGOYLES parody team-up for this comic book. I wrote it a year ago and I still haven't seen the final result, but I'm told it turned out all right. And every copy you buy puts about a tenth of a penny into my pocket... Seriously, it wouldn't hurt if this issue sold out and was followed by a letter writing campaign asking DC to do an actual Gargoyles comic. Don't know if it would work, but it wouldn't hurt.

UCLA EXTENSION
For those of you living in the L.A. Area, Kevin Hopps and I are teaching a twenty week course on writing for Television Animation through UCLA Extension's Writer's Program at Universal CityWalk starting this Spring and running through the Summer. Hope to see some of you there.

Now, back to your questions...

Okay, I'm new to the Gargoyles show, but what I've seen so far has got me hooked. I recently found out that the show was cancelled a long time ago and is running on reruns. (new to me) Anyway, I take it you've probably been asked this question a thousand times, but I searched the archives and can't find the answer or question anywhere. So, I have to ask:
What can I or my friends do to help the show get back up and running? Should I get petitions signed and sent to Disney or what? I'd love to help, and can't wait to do whatever I can.

Greg responds...

Tiffany, I love you.

But I don't have any new suggestions to make. (Check the archives again for the old suggestions.)

If ratings for Toon Disney's airings of Gargoyles started going through the roof, that would help a lot. So the best suggestion I can make is to turn all your friends on to the show, particularly anyone with a Nielson People Meter. The more people watching the better.

The other suggestion is to help us all keep an active fandom alive. Get involved and get as many people as you can involved. Come to G2000 in Orlando and get your friends to come. If we all speak with one LARGE voice, we have a chance.

1. I don't know. Most comic companies would not be interested in paying for the license of a series that isn't currently producing new material. As for which company? I don't really care, as long as they can deliver the book on a schedule with solid or better art and decent production values. I'd love to have Dan Raspler at DC Comics as my editor, but that's probably a longshot.

Greg responds...

I have and will continue to resist addressing these questions at this time.

Understand, GOLIATH CHRONICLES was very, very PAINFUL for me. Besides "The Journey" I watched each episode exactly once -- a bitter experience each time. (And note: This is not the fault of the people who produced those episodes.)

I have no desire to put myself through additional needless pain.

Now if the show were to come back, the pain wouldn't be needless. It would be worthwhile, and I would gladly watch, even study, each episode again, looking for loopholes, for what I could ignore, etc. etc. etc.

It may sound arrogant, but I have no doubt I could salvage my continuity in its entirety.

I think I would skip all of TGC except "The Journey". In a comic book, I'd have the opportunity to include a Text Feature, where I could explain what I was doing and why. That Text Feature would also allow me to bring new readers up to speed on what they need to know. That would give me the freedom to limit cannon to the first 66 episodes as opposed to the whole 78.
