None of my local stores carry anything Gargoyles. Would buying it from Amazon suffice?

Definitely!

SLG still has the three trades, and they remain our best bet for more new material. Obviously, we'll have to see how these last two trades sell.

TRADE NEWS!!!!!

Today, I e-mailed Dan Vado at SLG, asking about the two trades. Here's his response:

Hey Greg,

I was going to be emailing you this week.

Gargoyles I have scheduled for July, and that looks good for Comic-Con. Bad Guys I have scheduled for August and it a possibility for comic-con, but not a lock.

The Gargoyles trade will be in the May issue of Previews, I cannot stress enough that the fans really need to come out of the wood work on this one (not that they were in the wood work, but you know). They need to be "annoying" (i.e. pushy with retailers) as they can be because with the economy what it is right now nothing short of a huge groundswell of apparent demand wll get some of these guys (comic retailers and regular booksellers alike) to even buy a single copy. I am not a fan of getting people to be annoying, but this is going to be a case where it is needed.

Likewise Bad Guys (June Previews) will need an even BIGGER boost. I separated them because I did not want them to cannibilize each other sales-wise.

There you go, hope all is well with you...

Dan

So that's the news, both the good and the scary. I know I sound like a broken record. I know the fans shouldn't HAVE to be responsible for this, but if the fans don't, who will? I'll do my part. And Dan will do his, relative to his limited economic resources. But we NEED the fans to really step up and do two things:

(1) SPREAD THE WORD!!!! Please make sure EVERYBODY knows about these trades (and Volume 1 too).

(2) HARASS YOUR RETAILERS!! Make sure they KNOW how much you want these books. Pre-order them!! Put them on your pull lists!! Talk them up to every employee of every store!

Please!!

Remember, if these trades do well, we might be back with more original stories sooner than later. If they don't, it'll make it MUCH harder for SLG to justify risking more on the property, much harder to convince Disney that the property is viable and much harder to convince any other publisher to give us a shot.

Thanks,

gdw

CLARIFICATION

CLARIFICATION

Hey gang,

There seems to be some confusion about where things stand with the comic books, so I'm going to try again to clear things up. The SLG license expired on 8-31-08. That means there will be no more individual comic book issues on either Gargoyles or Bad Guys.

However, SLG does still have the right to put all existing material out in the Trade Paperback format. They are also allowed to include Bonus Material in these trades.

Gargoyles: Clan-Building, Volume One will remain available, and as soon as possible, we will be putting out Gargoyles: Clan-Building, Volume Two and Gargoyles: Bad Guys: Redemption out in trade.

Gargoyles: Clan-Building, Volume Two will include (obviously) Gargoyles issues #7-8, but it will ALSO include what would have been issues #9-12, including the covers, as QUOTE-UNQUOTE Bonus Material. You WILL get to see the end of the Clan-Building arc. Currently, issue #9 is done except for a few minor lettering corrections. Issue #10 is being pencilled as we speak. Issue #11 has been scripted, and we are looking for the right artist to pencil it. Issue #12 is being scripted now. The trade will come out when ALL this material is complete and approved.

The Gargoyles: Bad Guys: Redemption trade will include (obviously) Bad Guys issues #1-4, but it will ALSO include what would have been issues #5-6, including the covers, as QUOTE-UNQUOTE Bonus Material. You will get to see the end of the Redemption limited series. Currently, issue #5 is done except for a few minor art corrections and the lettering. Issue #6 is scripted, and Karine will begin roughing it out shortly. The trade will come out when ALL this material is complete and approved.

Hope that clears things up.

Hi Greg!
I got the Clan-Building Vol 1 TPB, and I think it's really great! I especially loved the Introduction by Wendy Pini. This past summer I attended the 20th Anniversary fan convention for the Beauty and the Beast TV series (1987-1990) where I got to meet Wendy Pini in person (she was a special guest at the Con). She's terrific, and I like the fact that being both a BatB fan and Gargoyles fan, she wrote the intro to this Gargoyles TPB.
My question is: Did you contact Wendy and ask her to contribute, or was she the one who contacted you to say she'd like to contribute an intro to the TPB?

Greg responds...

I asked her, and she very graciously agreed to do it.

Actually, any thoughts from anyone on who might be a good choice to write an intro to Volume Two?

Hi Greg.

I love the trade. Wasn't sure what I'd make of the size, but it's actually great (and seeing the art large-format is a good incentive for people not to trade-wait, hopefully). Some of the writing looks a bit grainy on the inside front and back pages but otherwise the presentation is superb -- sleek and attractive, nice paper, and a lovely clear spine that can be read from the bookshelf. Thanks to Scott Saavedra and everyone else who made it happen.

Couple of questions about the future of the comic...

1. When will a decision on the lisence renewal be made?

2. Since SLG's announced that it's moving to mainly producing graphic novels, is it possible Gargoyles could continue in that format after #12? I'm enthusiastic for whatever format, but I can see a lot of positives in moving away from "floppies". (More accessible for newbies given the huge casts and complex plots; a less frequent release schedule might help fend off the perception that the comic's dogged by delays; infrequent comic-readers buying mail order would save on postage, etc.)

Greg responds...

1. Dan has told me he'd like to renew it. He was, as of WonderCon, waiting on Disney to respond.

2. This is the first I've heard of the announcement. Me, I'll take what I can get.

Hey Greg,

Can't wait for The Spectacular Spider-Man, by the time you read this it will have already aired, and you'll probably have another message from me telling you how incredible it was. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan (and an even huger Gargoyles fan) and I know that with you behind the wheel, we're in for a great show.

That was more of a comment, so here's my question:

Any chance that you could give us an update on how things are going for:

a) Gargoyles #8 and Bag Guys #2, any updates on how things are coming along, whether they've been approved or approximately when we can expect them? Sorry to bug you about it but I'm just so excited to see where both new issues will take us.

b) Clan-Building Volume 1, did it sell well? I know I did my part, I bought 4, and I've reread it at least 20 times. It's nice to have them in a compact form, and I love the size of the book. I was expecting it to be about the size of the individual issues, but I was pleasantly surprised (it's the perfect size to read in class and not get caught :P).

I also bought two of the new t-shirt, so hopefully that'll help send Disney the message that we want more Gargoyles merchandise!

Thanks a lot for everything, it's so great to have Gargoyles to look forward to again. Here's to hoping for the Season 2, Volume 2 DVD, and the renewal of the license for the comics!

Greg responds...

a) See my answer to the previous question.

b) Don't know.

I got the trade on Sunday, and I have to say, on the whole I really liked it. The size threw me at first, but I've come to the conclusion that it's a lot more portable than a full-sized trade would be. I also like that, in addition to minor printing errors being corrected, the colors were lightened in #2; Terrell's colors were stronger than what showed when #2 was printed, so it's nice to see the coloring job that was intended. Wendy Pini's intro was great, of course, and the new artwork was also nice, although a tad too zoomed-in. I liked that every issue was preceded by its cover; it's a pet peeve when TPBs don't include all the covers, or include them in a gallery at the end. It's fun to see a compilation of all the different artists/art teams collected like this; very different styles, though all strong (and it's awesome to see Hedgecock's continuous improvement). To everyone involved, keep up the good work! :)

Thanks! We do our best!

Thanks for the Gargoyles TPB. There's nothing I can say here that I haven't said already about the comics, but the extras were great! Kudos to the intro as well. :)

Just keep plugging. We'll get there.

On the computer desk for the moment, as I'm staying at my dad's place tonight. Good job on your part of putting the TPB together. While I do have the individual issues, getting the trade wasn't really any problem as I've done the same for the Spider-Girl series from Marvel.

As for the next volume of Clan Building when it comes out (going for optimism here) have you considered putting in the scenes than didn't make it in the #6 flashback? You know, much like a Deleted Scene section on a DVD? Or did you you only script the scenes in question?

Greg responds...

I guess I have the old script, but I'm not sure I need or want to see the page or so that didn't make the cut into #6. They don't really fit anymore. And, of course, they were never drawn.

Dear Greg,
This will be a comment with a question stuck in here somewhere. But it's mostly random praises from a fan.
I just got the first 6 comics of the 'Clan Building Saga' for my birthday and am so excited! I watched this show when I was little and fell in love with it. I thought it was gone for good, but I saw a music video on Youtube dedicated to the 'old cartoons'. I saw a clip from Gargoyles and fell in love again. After doing some digging I found out that it has been released on DVD and is living on in comic book form. For this, I wish I could give you and everyone there a hug and some cupcakes, but sadly I don't know where you are. So my heartfelt thanks will have to be enough.
I've read and reread the comics. I can 'hear' the actor's and actress's voices while I read. I hope that I will hear when or if (I really hope when) you can get the audio comics produced as you mentioned in #3. I am also trying to get the last few dollars so I can get the DVDs for myself. And I've started on the 1000 people you asked me and I have converted 3 people in my class that are now hooked on Gargoyles as well.
Reading a comic is very different from watching a cartoon, but the artwork is breathtaking, amazing, incredible! Combine all those adjectives together and you still don't have how wonderful it is. This comic is so good I turn off the back-round noise I usually have on when I read so kudos!
The story is so exciting. I thought for sure that Demona and Thailog weren't going to show up for a while... boy was I wrong! And hooray for that! I'm so glad they are back. I can't wait to see what Thailog is planning. In #6, that Shari is driving me nuts!!! What's happening? Who is she? What is going on? And that is what I love about this comic. You always leave just enough hanging to make sue you're audience is on it's toes.
I only have one thing to say. Did the clan forget what happened in 'Possession'? I thought they knew about Coldstone, Coldfire, and Coldsteel. If that is coming up in the story then don't tell me. That episode was one of my favorites and I really hope it is still relevant in the story, at least a little. 'Possession' in 2nd only after the episode 'Future Tense'.
Which brings me to my next point. This is my question, Is Lexington's costume at the party supposed to look like the suit from 'Future Tense'? I saw it and felt so much foreshadowing... not to mention Brentwood and Thailog becoming allies. Wow. I did not see that coming. I have no idea if anyone else spotted that, but if it's meant to mean something, I can't wait to find out!
You are the best Greg, and everyone else over there working on the comics, I love you all, and if I'm in the country during the Gathering in Chicago I hope I can give you all cupcakes, or at least money for some food- you all deserve cupcakes.
That's about all I have to say. I am trying to buy the DVDs and am getting #7 as well as the 'Bad Guy' series. I hope that helps Disney release the rest of the episodes.
I can't wait until the next episode. By, the way, so far my favorite scene in the comics is a tie between #4, the panel where Goliath and Thailog are put as half of each other's face. I love the irony that Thailog, the evil one, is smiling while Goliath looks murderous, in #3 when Brooklyn and Malibu are staring at each other while Al and Shari are talking, it makes me laugh, #2 Lexington's face while Alex is pulling on his ear, #1 after Goliath says that he is going to see Elisa Brooklyn looks so cute!, and (last one I promise!), #1 John Castaway as he is destroying the statue with his hammer. That scene gives me chills.
This comic is adding new dimensions to the show. I wish it was still a cartoon but the comic is so good I can hardly tell the difference. Please keep this going! You have no idea how much this show changed my life. Sorry I'm getting a little over dramatic here, but it's true! So please, keep this comic going, it's so good and it deserves to live forever. I have already promised myself to have my children learn the lessons from this show. Thank you. All of you. You are angels! You are amazing! And please don't ever stop. This comic is rising higher and higher. It is absolutely above and beyond what normal people can do. Know that you are giving so much joy to us little readers down here. And that we worship you like gods! Because that is what you are- gods. Comic book, genius gods!
I hope the actor's can someday come back to create the audio comics.
But more importantly, I hope and pray this comic can live on for a long, long time so it can enchant others like it has me.
Here's hoping!

Laura

Greg responds...

If you're referring to issue #6 - that was a flashback story which took place prior to "Possession".

Lex's costume is consciously evocative of his Future Tense look. I'll leave the reasons behind that to your own interpretation.

I do like cupcakes, but showing up to the Gathering is present enough for me, Laura.

I bought my copy of Gargoyles: Clan-Building: Volume One yesterday. I was amazed at the size of the book (I'm used to trade paperback collections of comics being larger), but enjoyed it, all the same. I was pleased with the corrections.

Here's hoping that sales are good for it (and for the upcoming issues).

Hi Greg, thanks for Gargoyles.

1. Any chance that Wendy Pini might illustrate one of the new comics?
2. Does SLG have any plans for Gargoyles action figures or statues? (I assume Disney would be involved in any merchandising as well, might make things difficult?)

Cheers

Greg responds...

1. I doubt we could afford her -- and I'm sure she's way too busy, but it is lovely that she did the intro to the TPB, don't you think?

2. I don't think SLG has the license to do anything Garg-related except the comics.

I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but can you promise us a Clan Building Vol 2?

I'm told that our first Trade Paperback, "Clan-Building, Volume One" should hit stores tomorrow. I know most of you reading this probably have the issues collected already, but it should be a nice little package and a great way to introduce new readers to the series. So, I hope you ALL BUY HUNDREDS OF COPIES EACH!!!!!

Or, you know, you could just help us SPREAD THE WORD!

Whatever works for you would be appreciated.

Hello Greg! Congrats on getting the Gargoyles comic up and running!

I anticipated there would be a few mishaps in the monthly book (as is always the case), so I intentionally waited for the trade paperback in the hopes someone might get it for me for Christmas. As I prepare to drop subtle hints to a loved one, I must ask a few questions with regards to the trade...

-You posted on November 17th (I think) that space was slightly cramped in the trade, so what exactly was cut? I'm hoping we get all the pages of the first six issues (since I think those are all one arc), but from what you posted, it seems as though the premiere issue's 30 pages got whittled down. Could you clarify what that means? What, if anything, is missing? Is picking up the individual issues the only way to get all the story?

-Also, you posted corrections here in regards to errors from specific monthly issues. Does the trade contain the corrected versions, or are there a few typos or whatnot to look out for? What are they?

-Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I can't seem to find cover art or a release date for the trade. It's hard to suggest it as a gift without that info, so when do you anticipate the trade will be available in Canada for online or retail purchase, and what will it look like?

-Oops...one last question: Will the covers for the issues included in the trade be present in the trade? DC books usually reprint the covers in the last few pages of their trades, and since the Gargoyles covers look so nice, I assumed you might do the same.

Keep up the hard work - I look forward to reading it!

James (...who loves the "Avalon" arc, and wonders why you found it "rocky")

Greg responds...

Space was ONLY cramped vis-a-vis EXTRAS. ALL THE ORIGNAL MATERIAL FROM THE ISSUES INCLUDING THE COVERS (though not the letter columns) will be there. ALL OF IT! I apologize if that wasn't clear. All of it has been corrected for the Trade Paperback. At least all mistakes that I've caught or that have been pointed out to me.

I don't have a definitive date yet, but it should be either the last week of December or the first week in January. Watch this space.

FULL DISCLOSURE/FAIR WARNING

Today, I reviewed the galleys for the Trade Paperback: "Gargoyles: Clan-Building, Volume #1".

It was pretty thrilling. I know that may sound silly, but it was great to see it all together. It felt... substantial.

In the interest of full disclosure and fair warning, I do want to let people know that there isn't a lot in the way of extras.

Normally, we'd have 14 interior pages, not counting the covers to use for extras.

But we ALL forgot that issue #1 was 30 pages long, not 24. So that was 6 pages out right there. 14 pages down to 8.

We do have a wonderful two page original introduction by Wendy Pini, the creator of ELFQUEST. 8 pages down to 6.

But those six pages couldn't run concurrently to give us room for anything substantial, because we needed them to come between each cover and page one of each issue, to make sure the pages faced correctly. Those six pages had to serve this functional purpose.

Three of the pages are new original pin-ups of Goliath, Hudson and Demona. A few of you who have attended conventions with myself and David Hedgecock may have seen them before. David had a very limited amount (only 100 each) printed (at his own expense, I might add) as postcards for our signings. So to most of you, these will be brand new.

The last three pages are images of Broadway, Brooklyn and Elisa that most of you have probably seen before.

I don't know whether this is a shrug or a disappointment. Obviously, I hope all of you buy the Trade. I think it's a great way to read the stories. It's also a great way to introduce new-comers to the property... so maybe this is something you might consider as a holiday gift for loved ones, even if you don't feel you need it for your own collection.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to having it on my shelf.

Latest Update

Okay, here's what I know as of right now.

First off, the reprint of Gargoyles #6 should be in stores tomorrow (11/14/07). You SHOULD be able to exchange first printing copies for the reprint if you'd like. Notice the emphasis on SHOULD. Let me quote a recent e-mail from SLG publisher Dan Vado in answer to my question as to whether local stores know about this:

"The store issue is a tough one. They have been as informed as they possibly can be, that is we paid to have notices sent to them, there will be an item on their invoice and there was a mention in the weekly newsletter from Diamond Comics as well as from me personally in my retailer newsletter and on a retailer message board. That being said, I was on a conference call with two retailers yesterday, two who buy direct form me regualrly and are among those stores I would count as hard core supporters, and they had no clue they were getting new copies this week or about the replacement issue. So, as I have been mentioning to fans, the best thing to do if the retailer looks at them like they were crazy is to not bother them or get angry with them, just tear off the cover [of their old printing copy] and send it to us [at SLG] and we will replace the book directly. This is why we have not sent copies to Amazon yet and why it has not been on our website yet."

So, not a perfect world, but I really do think it's as good as it gets given the situation.

Next up, Bad Guys #1. This SHOULD be out by the end of this month. Unfortunately, because of Thanksgiving, that's not a lock. But if it's not out the last week of November, it will be out the first week of December. (In any case, it's ALL finished -- and approved.)

After that, expect Gargoyles #7 approximately three weeks after Bad Guys #1 hits the stores -- which SHOULD still put it in December -- unless Christmas messes that up, in which case it should be out the first week in January. The book is also ALL finished, but has not yet been approved.

After that, the Gargoyles Clan-Building Volume #1 Trade Paperback. Galleys are being reviewed now, but it should be out in late December or early January. We may delay it a week or two so that it isn't coming out the EXACT same week as BG1 or G7. Then again we may not.

After that, um, I guess Bad Guys #2, which is currently being finished by Karine.

After that Gargoyles #8, which is being pencilled by David.

After that Bad Guys #3, which is being scripted now by me.

After that Gargoyles #9, which has ALREADY been scripted by me. Uh... how did that happen?

Anyway, that's all I know at this time.
