Hi Greg,
I have been at Walt Disney World for a few months now and have not seen anything Gargoyles related. However, recently I came across some pictures that they can have Disney artist draw of Goliath and Demona. Its the only Gargoyles stuff I have seen and I was wondering if you know why they retired Goliath from walking around the park? Or why they don't seem to acknowledge Gargoyles at all in the park?

Greg responds...

I don't know.

I wrote a short story based on Broadway and Brooklyn way back in high school for english class. My teacher told me that it was one of the best, mosy imaginitive stories she's ever read. I have completed a novel which includes the Gargoyles, the first in a series of six. I want to get the book published. How can I get permission to use the characters?

Greg responds...

You can try to ask Disney.

But on principal, I'm not going to encourage you. Personally, I'd prefer you write something based on your own creation and publish that... as opposed to piggy-backing on something of mine.

Hey Greg,

I'm sure it's cliche and you're tired of hearing it by now, but I loved Gargoyles as a kid and continue to do so...I guess there's no need to go into any more detail than that. Just wanted to start off by saying thanks for all the hard work.

Anyways, onto the questions:

1. With the Marvel/Disney merger, what are the odds now that we'll see you pick up where you left off on the Gargoyles comic?
2. Does SLG still own all the rights to the comics you wrote for them or is it all owned by Disney and thus now a part of Marvel as well?

Now that the semi-practical questions are out of the way, time for my far nerdier side to kick in:

3. If asked to do a Marvel/Gargoyles crossover, who would be your first choice in Marvel character to cross over with? And since it's likely to be Spidey, who's your second?
4. Have you been approached about bringing Gargoyles into a future Kingdom Hearts game?

Thanks,
Phil

Greg responds...

1. I don't know that the Marvel merger has any effect on Gargoyles.

2. For starters, Disney owns Marvel, not the other way around. Marvel has no control or say over Gargoyles. But I don't know the specifics of the Disney/SLG deal or who owns the reproduction rights. I do know that Disney maintains ownership of the intellectual property including anything added in the comics.

3. Uh... I'm not that excited about the idea at all. But I guess the Defenders.

4. No.

Hello! I'm very sorry to have heard about the license for the comic expiring, but I'm gearing up for the TPBs which should be out shortly (assuming amazon.com's dates are accurate).

Since the license for the comics has a questionable future at best, I was curious as to how likely Disney would be about licensing Gargoyles for other purposes, namely rpgs & video games. I am huge pen & paper roleplaying game fan (or nerd, for short), and the Gargoyles universe would make a great setting. How likely would Disney be to go for something like that, assuming Disney even knows what an rpg is?

Greg responds...

TPBs are in fact out. If you don't have 'em yet, order 'em now! (Please.)

I'm sure Disney's willing to license it. The question is anyone interested in paying the licensing fee.

I heard a rumor that a Gargoyles-themed world might be made for the in development Kingdom Hearts 3. I was skeptical at first but a little research showed that with the exception of some of the main characters who were voiced by mainstream actors (Goliath, Elisa, Demona, Xanatos, etc), a significant portion of the other Gargoyles voice actors are already working or have worked on KH (Jeff Bennett, Jim Cummings, Matt Frewer, Cree Summer). Do you know if there is any truth to this? From a story standpoint, the Gargoyle's universe seems to lend itself well to videogames like KH.

I'd bet it's just a rumor. I've heard nothing about this. I haven't even heard the rumor.

Dear Greg,

I've been trying to locate the original Gargoyles Trailer (or Teaser) featured on VHS from when I was younger (presumably, before the movie/show came out). It's the trailer that shows Elisa's perspective as stones fall from Xanatos's castle, where she comments: "What could be strong enough to leave claw marks in solid stone?" At the same time this is happening, the title "Gargoyles" is being panned across the screen (similar to "The Terminator"). I have not been able to find it on YouTube or Google search, or even this website. If you know of a link or website featuring it, I would appreciate your help locating it.

Thanks,

Do you think you would ever post the actual scripts of the shows you've worked on? W.I.T.C.H. , Gargoyles, Spiderman ect. I would love to read them. I've never actually seen a cartoon script and I was wondering the major differences format/process wise vs film scripts.(which seem easy to find off the internet, but I don't know any sites that offer libraries of animation and comic formats)Thanks!

PS love the new spiderman episodes!

Greg responds...

Different issues for different shows.

For Spider-Man, the answer for the time being is no. The show is (hopefully) on-going, and posting the scripts -- even first season scripts -- might reveal secrets I don't want revealed.

For Gargoyles, I don't have electronic copies of most of the scripts. Really, I only have "The Journey". And I definitely don't have the time to transcribe them.

W.I.T.C.H. is more of a possibility. But you're asking about Format and all formatting would be lost if I posted the script here at ASK GREG.

Hello Greg,

Gosh, it's been over 7 years since I asked a question here!

First off, I'd just like to say how thrilled I am that you still continue to push for Gargoyles to reach the fans. No matter the medium! Before the comics, I lived for the "Ask Greg" section of this site, (I still enjoy reading here when time away from work and my horses allows). The comics have really been a godsend. It's always a disappointment to find your favorite show has no new material in the works, so I commend you for helping to keep Gargoyles alive and available to us all no matter what obstacle you must cross.

I'm very upset to hear about the license situation with the comic, but I have not given up hope for the future spin offs and further stories.

I'd guess you write timelines and probably have notebooks and computer documents full of continuing ideas. Have you ever thought about doing an encyclopedia/compliation with all of the characters, places and events as well as future events you have outlined? (Obviously with Disney's approval of course)

I apologize if the question has already been asked. I searched the archives and didn't see a mention. (There are alot of pages!)

Best of luck, keep up the good work and Long live the Gargoyles!

Greg responds...

I've thought often about it. No publisher has ever expressed any interest.

Something I thought of while playing around in the iTunes store: Do you think that Gargoyles has a chance of being put up on iTunes for purchase and, if so, what effect that would have on its future?

Now I dont know much about how iTunes works but it doesnt seem like something Disney could really lose money on. They just put the episodes up there and theyre either bought or theyre not. It seems cheaper than relesing them on DVD because then Disney doesnt have to spend money on designing box art, gathering extra/special content, advertising, and other stuff that has to do with selling a DVD set. Probably cheaper than if Disney finally made the Season 2, Part 2 DVD set.

It doesnt seem like there's really a way to lose money if they put it up on iTunes. Its not like the episodes could waste money by gathering dust on a shelf if they were avaliable on iTunes. And if the episodes made decent money, maybe it would reflect positivly on the comic's future. What do you think?

Greg responds...

I think it would be a great idea.

This is terrific news! (The moreso BECAUSE I had absolutely nothing to do with it, and it comes as a total surprise.)

This is also a GREAT opportunity for the fans. How do we prove to Disney, Buena Vista, Hot Topic, etc. that Gargoyles is a viable property? WITH OUR WALLETS! First chance I get I'm buying a shirt... (and I'm a guy with about 100 gargoyles t-shirts). As always, I'm not asking you to spend money you don't have or that you need for food or shelter or education. But if you have any disposable income and you care about keeping the property alive there is NO BETTER way then to buy a shirt. Need a birthday present for a friend or relative? Buy a shirt! You want the next DVD set to come out? Buy a shirt!

Keep in mind I don't make a penny off these shirts. But this is a REAL opportunity for us!

And as always, at the very least, help us SPREAD THE WORD: HOT TOPIC HAS GARGOYLES SHIRTS!!!

Also I have been thinking about the upcoming trade paperback. TPBs sometimes have extras in the back, so if you don't make the character designs available online, is this something you might put in the TPB?

Greg responds...

I don't have access to this stuff either. It's all in the Disney archives somewhere, I assume. There have been a few years where former guest coordinator Carol Wagner arranged for exhibits of old designs at the Gathering. And of course some of the old designs are visible on the extras for the DVD. The TPB will also have extras but they're not likely to be old designs from the show. Again, I have no access.

Hey! I sent in a journal on my non-gathering perspective of the Gathering of the Gargoyles weekend (I went to Disneyland instead). You wrote at the end of one of my journals, "And thatnk you. Don't suppose you saw any Gargoyles walking around... or Gummi Bears... or Darkwing Duck?" I have two things to say to that. First, I didn't see any of those characters walking around, but I did find a Gargoyles trading pin at California Adventure. I'm a big pin collector, and when I found it, I was stunned, shocked, extatic… yeah, all those words work. I hadn't even known that they'd made one (which is even more cool is that there were actually two of them there, the only two I have so far seen in my Disneyland pin trading history… I only took one of them though). I got my mom to trade one of her pins for it (it wasn't on sale; you had to actually trade for it) since I didn't have one to trade at the time. The pin is of Goliath standing in front of a moon with the title "Gargoyles" on it. It is my favorite pin so far, and will most likely remain my favorite for a very long time.

Second, I want to thank you for saying thank you to me. I've been having a pretty crummy day today (one thing being that I won't be able to get the 5th comic book for a very long time, along with a lot of other stuff) and hearing the thank you, that kind of made it a bit better. I guess you never really know what a few kind words will do for someone. Thanks for that.

Thank you for your time and all that you do.

Greg responds...

Well, how can I resist now... in your own words: "Thank you for your time and all that you do."

And enjoy the pin...

I'm not posting a link here because if the set isn't authorized, as I suspect, I don't really want to inadvertently point people to it.

Is this in any way likely to be something that's legal, and if not, what course of action would you suggest be taken?

Wow! Having just read issue 3 of the comic, I must say... I was astounded! I have had my reservations about the first issues, mostly because I was uncertain of the pacing of it all. But now, things are moving briskly, but we are still seeing flashes of our characters, even when they appear only briefly in an issue. It was amazing finally seeing NEW story progression after all these years!

In the letters page, you mentioned the idea of audio comics, and let me tell you... I'd pay a very reasonable (maybe even unreasonable) price to be able to listen to this issue read in the original voice actors' voices... but I suppose we should always have something to fight for out here in Garg fandom.

My question, at last- Since issues 1 and 2 equated roughly to one 22 minute episode... do you have any sort of fixed guideline you follow in a pages to minutes conversion? Does issue 3 feel like a 22 minute episode to you, or just part of one? I'm just curious, and I know that in teh long run my question's really rather irrelevant.

Thanks for making it so easy to keep having faith in the Gargoyles Universe, Greg! And if we ever get Season 2 Volume 2 on DVD, you better be at the front of every episode with introductions again. I loved those and found them charming, not goofy (as someone once commented here... or was that you?)

Greg responds...

I do think they're goofy (which is not to say I didn't have a lot of fun doing them).

I'd also love to do audio comics, but we'd need to see more evidence that there's a market for them. Hopefully, now that we're on schedule again, we'll be able to build the sales up on the comic.

To answer your question, I generally view each issue of the comic as being equivalent to one act of an episode. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it seems to be how things are breaking down. I was able to fit my adaptation of "The Journey" into two issues because the first issue had extra pages. But normally, I'll need three issues to do MOST stories justice. (Three acts to a TV episode = three issues of the comic.) Or so it seems. I'll admit that I'm still thinking TOO MUCH in TV terms. Issue #6 is a more stand alone story, but issues #7-9 tell one story and issues 10-12 will tell another that will bring the 12 issue Clan-Building arc to an end. It's like this:

CLAN-BUILDING
Story #1 - Issue #1 ("Nightwatch") and Issue #2 ("The Journey")
Story #2 - Issue #3 ("Invitation Only") and Issue #4 ("Masque") and Issue #5 ("Bash")
Story #3 - Issue #6 ("Reunion")
Story #4 - Issue #7 ("The Rock") and Issue #8 (TBA) and Issue #9 (TBA)
Story #5 - Issue #10 (TBA) and Issue #11 (TBA) and Issue #12 (TBA)

Twelve issues, five stories, one arc. As you can see, this barely scratches the surface of my Season Three plans, let alone my LARGER tapestry plans. But it's a start.

Hey Mr. Weisman. I figured that it was about time that I, as a fellow fan of Gargoyles, finally got around to asking "the Master" himself a two questions that have been floating around in my head for some time now, relating to Gargoyles and the entertainment medium called video games. Of course, that's if you have the time...

1) With regards to the old Gargoyles game released for the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive back in 1995, did Disney Interactive ask for, or otherwise give you any input in the creation of that game at all? I'm willing to bet the answer is "no" (given the many inconsistencies in that game with respect to the true story of Gargoyles), but I was wondering if I could be privy to a personal retrospective from you, if it was possible.

2) And I guess the other question I wished to ask was, have you ever given the thought of utilizing video games as a possible other medium to continue the story of the Gargoyles Universe? I believe you once said that you could very well see "Gargoyles 2198" made into a CG feature...I merely suggest the idea of "why not take that notion one step further, and possibly make it into a video game?".

After all, it goes without saying that video games are a great outlet to convey some truly memorable stories and characters, much in the way that any great book, tv show, or movie can. And with the industry grossing millions every year, it's not like it's exactly an "untested" means for others to project their ideas. Since the new Gargoyles comics proves that you are willing to seek other venues as a means to continue your work, I only hope that you will keep the ball rolling, and perhaps eventually look into other mediums, as well. I can only imagine the type of sheer entertainment and joy of being able to not only view the exploits of various characters you may devise, but to be able to directly interact with them, as well!

Plus, the way you seem to picture "2198" is as a world that is connected with the "classic" Gargoyles world, but disconnected enough that it will serve to be its own seperate entity. In my eyes, that's perfect enough to be used as a basis for a game, out of perhaps all of your possible "Gargoyle spin-offs" that you suggested. And as long as there were such things as "direct allusions to the past" and cameos from classic characters like Demona and a possibly time-dancing Brooklyn, that would be enough to ensnare us old fans, while also not alienating new fans who may not remember the classic show.

Any way, it's just an idea that I was hoping you would have been considering already. If yes, then that's very cool. If not, then maybe it's just another thing for you to throw around in your own mind.

Thanks again!

Greg responds...

1. We did work with them to some degree. Forwarded materials, back and forth, etc. I've mentioned before that the Eye of Odin was THEIR idea, which we incorporated. And I still like THEIR design (which feels much Norser) much better than OUR design (which looks quite Egyptian to me. The thing to keep in mind is that we were in production simultaneously with them. So both groups were ridiculously busy. Plus, I'm not a gamer. That world is pretty alien to me. So we probably didn't keep in as good touch as we might or should have. But that's NOT Disney Interactive's fault. It's just what happened.

2. I'm game. (Pun intended.) But again, I know nothing of that medium. And no one's approached me about it.

Friday, June 23, 2006: 1ST DAY OF GATHERING OF THE GARGOYLES:

Again, if you don't remember my last post from yesterday (which is likely, there are a lot of people who like to talk to you) I was not able to go to the Gathering of the Gargoyles this year. I'm posting what is happening to a person who can't get to the gathering. Besides spontanious cries of wanting to be at the gathering and break downs every now and then, things are pretty much normal. My sister gets a kick every time she hears my little outbreaks.

Today there was no school, so I stayed home and pondered with my sister about the gathering and past experiences we've had due to gargoyles. I reminded her about the gargoyles games we used to play and we both laughed for a long time as we reminisced. We were bored so we looked through some old board games that we might enjoy playing. As we did, I started thinking about how fun it would be to have a gargoyles board game. You know how Monopoly has different versions? There could be a gargoyles monopoly, or the game Life could throw its hat into the ring. I know it is unlikely, but wouldn't it be cool?

While conventions are on my mind, I just wanted to put out there that Pirates of the Carribean 2 is having its premier tomorrow at Disneyland. I thought it was really funny that the premier for that is at the same time as the gathering. What a conincidence, huh? They should've done a joint thing, with pirates and gargoyles at the same time. That would be the best. I know that the gathering doesn't have to do with Disney promoting the Pirates of the Carribean movie, but just imagine with me...

I can only imagine the great time everyone is having right now, getting to the gathering. Okay, I lied, I can't imagine because I've never been to one. The closest thougts that I have to a gathering are the few scenes that were shown on the DVD for the 1st season of gargoyles. I really liked that. It was kind of a bummer to see that there was nothing on the gatherings on the second DVD. Oh well.

Well, we're almost half way through with these journals (at least I am almost through). I only have Saterday and Sunday to record, and maybe Monday if you're lucky (hahaha). It's funny how I don't end up writing about my day, but more about jibberish.

One more thing, I saw the new episode of WITCH tonight and it rocked! You're doing a great job with that, along with all the other talents working on the show. If only those talents could go towards another gargoyles show....

Thank you for your time and patience. I also hope you have a great time at the convention.

-Charisma82

I have a vague memory that after the Dallas Gathering, which was attended by Steve Jackson, that Christine Morgan and I had some discussion about this. But I guess nothing ever came of it. I'd be happy to participate in the creation of a Gargoyles RPG, but I don't know enough about that arena to initiate things. And of course, one has to keep in mind that I don't OWN Gargoyles. So whomever wanted to do it, would have to purchase a license from Disney. Not impossible to do, as SLG has proven, but not easy to do as CreatureComics.com learned when we tried to get the comic book license before being teamed with SLG.

Hey Greg, I'm back to make my review of the Season II - Volume I DVD!

I've been waiting to do this since I bought it on the day of release - I'm actually a tad surprise it took so long, as opposed from last year . . .

But getting to the point: Season II, Volume I ROCKED! Several of my favorite episodes are in this DVD, including the City of Stone 4-Parter, the Avalon 3-Parter, and probably my favorite in the entire DVD: The Mirror!

My favorite bonus feature was the episode introductions, and I really wish now that Season I had them as well. They offered more behind the scenes info than I think I expected. I really did love the Gathering of the Cast and Crew: I have only seen Keith David, Johnathan Frakes, Mirina Sirtis and Sally Richardson (and you, of course) in my history of Gargoyles, so it was nice to finally attach some faces to the rest of the cast and crew as well. I loved Jeff Bennet's 3-Voice demo. Absolutely amazing and hilarious at the same time!

I loved the commentary on City of Stone. Out of the two multi-parters we got, I'm happy this one at least got the commentary. The back-story of Demona and Macbeth is perhaps the best memory I have of watching Gargoyles when I was six. Never before (and I think you mentioned this on the commentaries) had I seen the bad guys in a point of view that got me feeling sorry for both of them! The music by Carl Johnson in the Part IV (Where we see Demona in the forest fire) is definitely what I reminisce most in the four-parter. Simply legendary.

By the way, after I had watched the City of Stone four-parter commentaries, I was driven to look up the entire "Macbeth" Family Tree. I finally found the historical version, and with the knowledge of what I knew of Princess Katherine and her dad Prince Malcolm, I think I worked it all out all the way to Luach (I know, I know . . . Lulach. But I'm used to it!) and Canmore!

I don't know if it was you or someone in the Gargoyles team that did it, but I love the fact that the cover says "We Live Again." Simple, but powerful for anyone who remembers the series.

I wish Avalon had a commentary as well, but that is why I appreciate the Introductions so much.

I can't wait for the next DVD. I can't wait to have The World Tour (which I had always called the 'Avalon Odyssey' before I started going online) to my collection. So many stories in so many places . . . I love them all!

Thanks for the series, Greg. From the season premire I was lucky to witness up to today, this show STILL remains my favorite show of all time!

On to Volume II!

Greg responds...

You're very welcome.

In House at Disney, we started calling it "The Gargoyle World Tour" as a joke. Like we'd make concert t-shirts with all the stops. (HEY, THAT'S A GOOD IDEA!!)

I am a huge fan of Gargoyles as well and would like to purchase some original production from the series if it is at all possible. I am particularly interested in moments between Goliath and Elisa. Please let me know if this can be done, and how I can go about it. Thank you for your time Greg!

Greg responds...

Hey Susan,

I'm guessing you posted this before we met and before you attended your first Gathering.

I'm thinking that by now you've had the opportunity to get some cells. I feel like they were on sale in Las Vegas in 2005. E-bay's another possibility, or contact the fans via Station Eight.

But I'm afraid that I'm not a resource for finding or purchasing Garg cells.

I own four cells myself (which I have no intention of ever selling):

1. Goliath in the castle corridor from "Awakening, Part One"

2. Goliath holding what he believes to be Demona's remains from "Awakening, Part One"

3. Goliath, Elisa, Lexington, Broadway, Brooklyn, Hudson, Bronx watching t.v. from "The Edge".

4. Goliath and La Belle Elisa dancing from "Eye of the Beholder".

'sup Greg?

You just recently posted a reply to a question about whether or not you would consider writing a Gargoyles novel to help flesh out your master plan in lieu of doing a continuation of the series. This seems like a good idea to me. You replied that you would love to write a novel (or eight) if you could find an interested publisher. But you don't need a traditional publisher to get published these days. You can write a book, publish it online, and interested parties can order copies and the books can be printed one at a time. This means no huge financial risk for publishers and so no need for a huge audience, it means increased per-sale profit for the author, which would be good for you since the novels probably won't make the NY Times Bestseller list and you would probably want at least some financial incentive to pour so much of your time into such a project. These days anybody can get published, it's something you ought to look into, as an outlet for yourself as well as for all the dedicated fans. Though personally I'm pulling for the DVD sales to get that movie made and then a new series... but I know that's probably wishful thinking at this point. we'll see in four days how that's going to pan out..

Good luck in all your future endeavors.. which you will have about two years worth of from now until the time you actually answer this. :)

Greg responds...

The idea has crossed my mind before -- on other properties -- but you're leaving out a big piece of the puzzle here in the gargverse. I don't OWN Gargoyles. I can't self-publish a for-profit Garg novel.

Hi Greg-

First let me thank you and the rest of the Gargoyles team for the series. I have been a fan since it debuted. Truthfully, whether or not this actually gets posted doesn't concern me, but I just read a post/reply about writing novels. DAW Books is always encouraging submissions, so here is the link:

http://www.dawbooks.com/static/cs/us/50/submissions.html

It gives all the instructions for your submission. Once again thanks and I finally saw the "sneak peek" for W.I.T.C.H. and if it holds true, I look forward to seeing Season 2.

Greg responds...

You seem to be under the assumption that I've written a novel to submit. But I haven't. Given that it's a property that I do not own, I can't justify spending the time to write an entire novel on spec, in the hopes that some publisher will want it so much that they will not only pay me but they will also pay Disney to let them publish it (the latter being a not unconsiderable sum, I'd guess).

EYE OF THE STORM

(And a Happy Thanksgiving 2004, BTW.)

This was the second time the Eye surprised me--the first being when it was revealed to be more than a mere bauble. Now we find out it really is Odin's eye, and he's looking for it.

I love Odin's "old wanderer" guise. The "star-cloak" is nicely done. His final, "Warrior-King" ensemble is a little less impressive to me, actually, but still nice (and hey--having little exposure to the great Kirby's work, it looked pretty fresh to me).

This is one of those episodes where, after watching it, you realise just how EASY things would have been if everyone had been honest and open from the start. As you pointed out Greg, Odin could have just said, "Hi! Welcome to Norway! I'm Odin, I'll be your resident supernatural being today. Oh, by the way, could I have my eye back please? I really miss having depth perception." He might have actually got his Eye in less time than it takes to watch the first Act. And poor Gunther and Erik wouldn't have lost a wall of their house!

Erik is an interesting fellow, to me. He know's Elisa's hiking story is suspect, but he doesn't want to press her about it, and in fact seems to have a rather cheerful attitude in spite of the deception. He also, to me, never seems to quite trust Goliath. Even after Elisa's first brought him up to speed he says, "From what you've told us, it sounds like we're in good hands with your Goliath." He doesn't sound completely sure about that.

Gunther's reaction to the gargoyles and the world they open up is great--wonder and enthusiasm. Pretty much what you'd expect for a boy his age. I love his eagerness to see Angela and Bronx wake up, along with his happy, "Hi, you must be An-GEL-a" (I love his strange pronunciation there).
I also love Angela's response to that greeting--"Uh...yes, I am." You go to sleep and then wake up on top of a car with a young lad happily saying your (mispronounced) name--yeah, that can be disorienting.

"The Fall of Goliath"--This was very well done. I liked how you guys developed the way in which the Eye "corrupts" Goliath. It takes his caring, protective nature and twists it into a rigid, tyrannical, "It's all for your own good" sort of thing. I have to admit I was at first surprised when it was revealed that he had been creating the storms, but afterwards it made perfect sense.
Actually, it's interesting that, after riding away and yelling "This isn't over," Odin really does cease to take any action against our heroes. He doesn't surface again until Goliath calls him out.

That battle is very well-done, BTW. It's pretty obvious that in terms of raw power, Goliath's got the edge, however Odin is the one who uses more subtlety--such as freeing Goliath's friends.

Goliath has some real "villain" moments in this piece, the most obvious of course being his line to Odin, "How frustrating for you, Old Man. To be so close to Death, and Rejuvination at the same time." Did anyone else hear a "Darth Vader Breath-Track" there?
Others would include the one you pointed out, Greg, where Goliath just says they'll "pack" Angela and Bronx--that always threw me off for some reason--and just the way he says, "A cave...yes, a cave would be ideal."

Before I forget, "Odinized Goliath" had a great design--and I like how it was tied in with Odin's "Warrior-King" design. The starry (sp?) wings were a nice touch, too.

SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS:
Goliath: "Believe it or not, we've hit ice."
Elisa: "I believe it." (A fun little exchange.)

I love how Goliath holds Elisa at the beginning. Obviously, it's to try and keep her warm...but there's, to me, a pretty strong undercurrent of attraction there. And I love his line (and the way he says it), "It is my duty to protect you."

Dang! In trying to get the Sturllisen's (sp?) car to stop, our heroes nearly send them over a cliff! Good thing Goliath can pretty much bench their car.

Elisa tries to outrun a man on a horse...well, I guess it beats just standing around, but they both have the same outcome.

I really wish more had been done with Goliath's first sight of the sun. This time, though, I began to wonder if Goliath was more enamoured with the feeling of the sun, or the feeling of the POWER coursing through him.

"Maybe you should take the Eye off now." I love how Goliath pauses ever so slightly before answering that.

I recall someone once saying that they were glad neither Gunther nor Erik became a new hero for Norway. :-)

Angela and Bronx are crusted with ice before they awaken. I rather liked that.

"The Eye! The Eye has gone to your head!" I love the look on Goliath's face after that--the raised brow ridge. It's almost like he's reacting to the (unintentional on Elisa's part) pun.

Goliath's turn around was a bit too quick and pat, but it nevertheless touched on Goliath's love for his daughter. I rather like Elisa's admission "Wish I'd thought of that." Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but it seems to me like it touches on Elisa's feelings for Goliath. Elisa may not be much for being the "Damsel in Distress"(tm), but all the same, I think she sort of likes being "rescued" by Goliath.

BTW, when'd the Eye get its "neck-chain" back?

To me, Odin's putting his Eye in its socket wasn't anti-climactic. It was just right. I mean, that's all he really wanted it for. And his and Goliath's final exchange was very well-done. I like how they admitted that each of them had kind of screwed up.

At any rate, I really enjoyed this episode and was glad to get a chance to see what happened when Goliath wore the Eye of Odin.

BTW, way back when you rambled on TEMPTATION (3 years ago, I think?) you said there were 3 toy tie-ins throughout the series. The first was the motorcycle in TEMPTATION. The second was supposed to be the helicoptor in HER BROTHER'S KEEPER (which wound up becoming a "sky sled"). And the third was supposed to be in this episode. So, what was the toy supposed to be?

Greg responds...

"Oh, by the way, could I have my eye back please? I really miss having depth perception."

LOL

As for the toy connection, they wanted a "STORM-BRINGER GOLIATH" (I think that was the name). They were doing a whole line of elemental gargoyles. Ice-Brooklyn, I think, was one. They wound up doing Hudson as the storm gargoyle, I seem to recall (although it's been a LONG time and I don't have those toys).

Also, as I've mentioned before, the EYE OF ODIN itself was the invention of the Disney Interactive Games people, and they used it in the game they created over there. (In fact they had a better - NORSER- design than we had. I always thought that our design looked a bit too Egyptian.)

Hi Greg,

I recently wrote a Guide for the Gargoyle's video game (2 years ago when you get this). You can check it out here:
<http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/file/gargoyles.txt>

I summarized the story in the beginning of the guide and thought you might be curious about it. Basically the Vikings attack Castle Wyvern because the 'evil' Eye of Odin compels them to. Goliath defeats them and wakes up in the future only to find out that the Eye has teamed up with Demona (for some reason the Eye is a sentient, flying Eye... they don't say why).

Sorry for being long winded, here are my questions:
1.) Is there any talk within Disney about making a new 'Gargoyles' video game and/or have you tried to/been approached about convincing Disney to make one?

2.) Do you think that the video game format is a good way to tell the story of 'Gargoyles'? If yes what part of the 'Gargoyles' series would you like to make into a game?

Gargoyles is a great show and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

2. Honestly, I'm not much of a gamer. I'd be "game" (sorry) to try. But I don't know much at all about the medium.

First of all I want to thank you for creating the Gargoyles. Even after all these years I still enjoy revisiting them.
I was, of course, very disappointed when the show was cancelled and I would love to see a movie made but I will not hold my breath for waiting. My question for you is this:
If the movie ends up never coming to light, would you ever consider publishing a full length novel? I know that there is a lot of fan fiction out there but there is something about a real "live" book that is so much more satisfying. That and the fact that, as with many other fans, I am avidly curious as to your master plan.

Hello Greg,
Okay where do I start? My daughter Elisabeth (she is 8 years old), is a complete die-hard fan of the Disney Gargoyle series. One of her wishes from Santa is to get an Autograph and or letter from (actually she would really love to meet one of the creators, but I told her that this wouldn't be quiet so easy even for the "big guy"to do) for Christmas. And of course if possible to get some of the Gargoyle Action Figures. Now, the later you probably aren't able to help me with, but maybe a with the Autograph? She only has these 2 wishes for Christmas. Due to the limited supply and the fact that I am not looking to collect, but to buy these toys for play, things are a little more difficult for me ($$ wise). Is it possible to get an autograph from you? I have no problem paying postage etc. You would make her Christmas wish come true. I made her a collage from Gargoyles that hangs above her bed & it would be so wonderful to full-fill this wish for her in adding your autograph to it. Please help! (or email me at Pvongraf@yahoo.com)
Thank you,

P.S. She has this huge imagination, is a great artist, that sells her pictures for 1$ a piece on the weekend in front of our door (lol maybe a future cartoonist?) and she actually wishes she could be in real life a Gargoyle. I fully support her in her hobby, as I do like the story too. (Thank good she doesn't like Pokemon etc). A big compliment to you! And Thank you!

In the late 90s, Buena Vista Home Entertainment released the first season of Gargoyles on 5 home videos. I'll list the videos with the episodes they presented below:

1. GARGOYLES: The Movie: The Heroes Awaken
"Awakening, Part One"
"Awakening, Part Two"
"Awakening, Part Three"
"Awakening, Part Four"
"Awakening, Part Five"
[Note that this was an edited movie version of our five-part pilot, originally created for a special World Premiere screening in September, 1994.]

2. GARGOYLES: The Hunted
"The Thrill of the Hunt"
"Temptation"

3. GARGOYLES: The Force of Goliath
"Deadly Force"
"Enter Macbeth"

4. GARGOYLES: Deeds of Deception
"The Edge"
"Long Way to Morning"

5. GARGOYLES: Brothers Betrayed
"Her Brother's Keeper"
"Reawakening"

All of these episodes -- UNCUT -- will be available on December 7th, 2004 on DVD. Along with some cool extras.

Greg, have you or disney been contacted by any computer game developers or publishers with possibly making a game in the gargoyles universe for the PC or the consoles,(eg playstation2, xbox ect). Are you a computer gamer yourself and if so what games do you play, and what games you have played do you like the most. My faverote would have to be the awersome PC game Deus Ex, becorse amongsed other things the mood and the hi-tech dystopian future theme reminded me of the kickass gargoyles "future tens" episode.

I'm not a gamer myself. I did help Disney Interactive work on a Gargoyles game way back when. Nothing since. But I'd be very interested in helping.

My son is almost six years old and loves Gargoyles, he stayed up late one night and caught wind of it, that was all it took, a true fan and myself. I tape it everynight 11-midnight, now it's only on 11:30- Midnight. We will be very sad if they take it off the air. My son would like to know if there was ever any toys made from Gargoyles, he despertly would like all the characters.

Greg responds...

Once upon a time, both Applause (pvc figures) and Kenner (action figures) made toys. (And a few other random licensees were out there too.)

To find them now, you'd have to check out something like e-bay OR bring you're son to the GATHERING where there are always toys available at the auction! The Gathering is VERY kid friendly. I know because I've taken my kids too. It's been nearly two years, so I'm guessing your son is now almost eight. Mine are 7 and almost 10. I hope both of you are still fans.

Hopefully, sometime over the last two years you found it. Cuz, I don't know the link. If I'm guessing right about what you're referring to, The Gargoyles Saga is a fan driven fan-fiction continuation of the series. I have no involvement in it, and I haven't read any of it.

Greg responds...

I don't read any fan fiction, adult or otherwise, to protect myself legally in case (as I hope) I have the opportunity to do Gargoyles again.

I do, frankly, enjoy adult pictures of canon characters. Some, anyway, if they're well-drawn, sexy and/or witty and if they're not TOO sick.

But I'm afraid I don't know where you can purchase any toys... except that the dealers at the annual GATHERING of the GARGOYLES generally have quite a few on sale.

So come to Montreal this summer. *By now you're 18, and an adult who can travel.*

I'm not sure what you mean... but Disney owns the specific images presented in the series. Anything that you did (and tried to make money off of) that was extremely similar, would risk legal action from them. But they can't "copyright" winged creatures.

DVDs should be coming out this fall/winter.

Toon Disney makes edits based on their own Standards and Practices.

The video of the "movie version" of the pilot was edited down for our world premiere. Disney Home Video chose to use this edited piece rather than the full five-part pilot.

To answer your question, here, is difficult, only because your question is fairly unclear.

The first season of Gargoyles was released on video years ago. Those videos can be difficult to find now, but they're out there. The second season and the Goliath Chronicles has never been released.

Disney Home Entertainment is planning to release the first season again on DVD in 2004. Subsequent releases will obviously depend on the success of this first DVD release.

Hi Greg. I was just wondering if you could give us an update on the following:

1) The Touchstone Gargoyles movie.

2) The Gargoyles Encyclopedia you prepared (have you been adding anything to it? Have you been submitting it to publishers?)

3) Any projects you're currently working on.

Sorry if any of these are sore subjects to be bringing up. Thanks for any answers, though.

Greg responds...

1. I think that's on hold. There was a management change at Touchstone, and it seems the new management is currently not pursuing the project. Not surprising after seven years of unsuccessful development and I don't know how many writers. But it is disappointing, considering the kinds of movies that dominate the box office, it seems like they're missing a bet.

2. The Encyclopedia is done, though it could stand another draft if I had the time, which I don't. I have no publisher to submit it to. For starters, I don't own Gargoyles. Secondly, I really don't have any connections in the world of publishing. Third, everytime I've talked to anyone (not fans, but publishing pros) about the project, I've gotten nary a nibble of interest. If any of you know anyone in publishing who might be interested, I'd love to get it published (with or without the timeline).

3. I've been working recently for Platinum Studios, developing their comic book universe. It's been fun. Last year I wrote one Mummy, which has aired and one Kim Possible, which hasn't aired yet. Oh and I worked briefly on the Bionicle Direct to Video "Mask of Light" that's coming out later this year. That's it for animation.

I've had some preliminary talks with Disney about releasing a DVD. Last summer they said the first DVD would come out sometime in 2003. Other DVDs would only follow if the first one sold well. I had a brainstorming meeting with them in November (?). It was very exciting. They were talking about releasing the whole first season with a commentary track and an extra or two.

Since then, they've been on the quiet side. To be honest, I don't know what to make of that. Hopefully, we're still on track.

Before I get to the questions, I'd just like to say how much I enjoyed the show and how amazed I am to find that I'm not alone in wishing to see a return to that universe. Having said this...on with the questions!
First, is it possible to obtain recordings of some of the episodes, particularly "The Mirror"? On the subject of "The Mirror" I must say that I was somewhat disapointed that subplot (the sparks of romance) between Goliath and Elisa never reached the level of developement I was expecting (or did it?). I honestly thought Elisa made a very good gargoyle, and I always wondered if that might also have been addressed in some way. Thank you once again for everything!

Greg responds...

1. The first season was released on video, though you'd probably have to haunt e-bay to find copies of those tapes. Otherwise, the only thing I can recommend at this point is to record the eps off Toon Disney.

2. Well, I think the subplot was advanced in episodes like "Sentinel" and "Hunter's Moon", among others. As for Elisa being a gargoyle, that was always temporary in my mind.

Hi Greg,

A friend and I were talking about how wonderful it would be if there were Gargoyles novels (sort of like the Star Trek ones) A whole series. I know you've said before that you would be interested in doing something like that but you need a publisher. I was wondering, since Disney owns the characters and they have lots of books made for different shows and movies, would it be possible to get a publisher through Disney? They must have some contacts. I remember they had some small novels about the pilot episode of gargoyles. They could always try one novel and see how it does. It seems like you have a great deal of ideas ready and it's such a shame that nothing is happening with them right now. ie. new episodes, novels etc.

Greg responds...

It is a shame, isn't it?

To my knowledge, Disney has shown no interest in publishing any garg-related novels, either through their own company, Hyperion, or through another publishing concern. I no longer have any contacts there, however.

But for the record, I'd love to write one or more garg novels. I even have multiple plots in mind. I'm dying to do it.

Good evening Mr. Wiesman.

I've seen how the vidio version of Awakening cuts a lot of scenes that were on T.V., but I've also noticed that there were a few things added. Such as, a few very short scenes, like Goliath saying "godspeed" to the trio when they went for the disk (although, they cut more of the latter convorsation, and I don't know if Goliath WOULD say godspeed), I think there were some more small extras to. Some of the sound effects were enhanced as well (for better and for worse). SO, to get to my question. Do you know if the videos for the first season were made differn't from the TV version? Anything differnt, form deleted scenes, to extra scenes, ro better sound, to anything new at all, that would make it worthwhile to purchase or rent? And I'm sorry for wasting you time if you don't have a clue.

Thank you

Greg responds...

I can't tell you whether it's "worthwhile". They are simply different. Two different teams did the editing and the sound effects with two VERY different purposes in mind.

The series version, is in my mind, the true version. Though I was on the team that did the post-production on what became the Video version (though it was not originally created for video, but for a 35mm big screen preview at Walt DisneyWorld).

There is also yet a third version done by a third team (and I don't even KNOW who these people were) that was done for the syndicated movie version.

All might be interesting to view in comparison to each other. I certainly have copies of both of the first two versions. But I can't judge for you whether it's interesting enough to be worth your money.

1. In "Journey" you introduced John Castaway. Would he be involved in any way, in any of your spinoffs? The reason I ask is, I know he won't be alive in 2198. (Maybe his great grandson or some relative) But other than 2198 are you planning anything more with him?

2. Since I know you only worked on one episode of TGC, would you personally (should your spinoffs come back to TV) ignore what has taken place in the remaining episodes of the TGC seeing how you were not involved in their creation? Or were some of the TGC episodes ideas yours which you were planning before your contract ran out? I don't think some episodes can be completely ignored. However I hated that in TGC, they killed off the clones. What is your take on this?

3. By the way, since the Gathering 2001 is over, may I ask if there was any petitioning done to jumpstart Gargoyles and make it TV-borne again? If so, how'd it go?

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2. I've answered this before too. My current thinking, which is not etched in stone, is to ignore what I don't consider canon. Enough time has passed and any new episodes would need to stand on their own two feet anyway. If anyone's confused about contradictions between TGC and the new stuff, they can check out the internet site that we will have to clarify all this stuff.

3. I didn't see any petitions. Feel like starting one? I'd focus on DVD's for now.

Incidentally, your post here should theoretically have been broken up into three posts, since your questions were on three separate topics. I haven't reminded people of that in a while. I ignored the rule breaking this time, but don't make a habit of it.

I have been trying to find a cell of Goliath in the episode "Ill Met by Moonlight". It is when Goliath and Overon are in a baron place and Overon is throughing rocks at Goliath. Goliath askes Overon if Lady Titania wants the land to beat them or him. He responds with come on then. Goliath lets out a roar and smashes the rocks at his feet. As the dust clears Goliath is in a muscle pose with wings spread and eyes glowing white. This is the specific cell I am searching for. Please assist me with any info you have to help seek out this picture/cell. Thanks TBONE

Sorry, TBONE, but you obviously haven't even looked at the archives. If you had, you'd know I don't have a CLUE where you could find this or any other cell. I don't work in consumer products or retail. Good luck, though.

A refernce to the last question: in your Encyclopedia, would at least have a mention of TGC? It was there; was it, no is it worth a mention?

Greg responds...

The Encyclopedia, as it is now written, is largely written within the Universe. It doesn't deal in detail with the behind the scenes stuff. There's no entry on Greg Weisman or Frank Paur, for example. Content covers "The Journey". But not the other twelve TGC episodes. There is a mention of TGC however.

Greg;
I recently bought a copy of the book Total Hockey, verily a ponderous tome (A big book) if I ever saw one. It has stats on every team, stats for every play to ever play at least one game, records, trophy winners, coaches, Etc; and it is 2000+ pages to boot. (I guess this is why it is the "Official Encyclopedia of the NHL.) It also talks about fans of teams, defunct teams, Stanley Cup Winners, and lots more.

1) Would your Gargoyles Encyclopedia be like this? would it have a blurb on every character little and small to ever appear in the show? IE) The three or so Gargoyles left when Demona is named, or Harvey the Ninja?

2) Would it have stats like height, weight, weight in stone, Eye Color, favourite food?

3) Would the book have stats or trivia on gargoyle mating rituals, or hints about future shows?

4) could it have info on the fan support after the fact, like the gathering?

5) OR would this book only have current cannon on Items, Places and Characters in the 66 Ep's?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. Harvey's definitely in there, but not every incidental character who ever appeared on screen. But every character named, yes.

2. No.

3. Yes.

4. The current draft does not. But it could.

5. Mostly the 66. Whether I went further would depend on what else was going on.

Hi, Greg, I first wanna say that I think you did a wonderful job with Gargoyles. The plots were wonderful for the whole family--not just kids. It's an educational experience for sure! So thank you for bringing it to life and sharing it with all of us. And my question is this--I looked in the archives, but couldn't find where someone has asked this, so I really hope I looked hard enough, but I was wondering where I could view an the original drafts of Goliath--for example, you said that Mr. Guurr(sp?) had made the basis for Goliath's form. Is there any way to see it? I'm very curious how Goliath originally was drawn, and how he evolved into the person we see now. Thanks so much, Mr. Weismann, and I hope I haven't annoyed you. Thanks! Tazz.

Greg responds...

Not annoyed, but I don't have any of that old development art. Disney has it. Sorry. Maybe if you come to the Gathering in L.A., will try to give it all a holiday from the archives for a bit.

The word from Kenner Toys...

So the meeting between us and Kenner happened, most likely on June 30th, 1993. They brought this document to the table. It's very enlightening, I think, as to how a major toy company thinks. You'll notice that their "main concerns" didn't cause us to alter the show at all. Save for adding in a motorcycle and helicopter here and there. There were some things that they were concerned about that we were just able to reassure them about. That the Trio would not just be silly. That Xanatos would eventually get down and dirty with his own armor, etc.

My handwritten notes at the bottom were things we discussed at the meeting, also to help aleviate their concerns. "Franken-goyle" eventually became Coldstone. "X's Metal/Steel/Titanium Gargoyles" became the Steel Clan Robots. We were trying to show Kenner that we'd have some "male villain gargoyles" in addition to Demona.

GARGOYLES

MAIN STORY ELEMENTS

Conflicts
* Ageless goodness and loyalty vs. modern opportunism.

* Powerful myths.vs. powerful high tech "realities".

* Goliath vs. Demona.

* Goliath vs. Xavier.

Partnerships
* Goliath and his five ancient gargoyles.

* Elisa and her gargoyle team; especially Goliath.

* Xavier and Demona.

* Xavier and his subordinates.

Goliath Characteristics
* Huge, powerful, and ugly.
* Immortal by night; inert and powerless by day.
* Ancient, decent, loyal, and wise.
* Possesses leadership qualities.

ISSUES

Main Likes
* Visual power, strength of living gargoyles.

* Day vs. night power phases of protagonists.

* Humorous possibilities of gargoyle assimilation into contemporary New York.

* Traditional good vs. evil conflict.

Main Concerns

* Severe visual contradiction of scary/ugliness as good (Goliath); deceptively normal is bad (Xavier, his gladiators, etc.)

* Limited number of heroic characters.

* Key human ally is female (Elisa).

* Key/only evil gargoyle is female (Demona).

* Industrialist as the evil adversary is very familiar and very difficult to translate into an exciting toy. A visually more powerful and more unique enemy would be preferable or increase his powers through armorment [sic].

* Lack of significant special hardware and vehicles for both good and evil.

* Described back story (especially enduring- love/hate relationship between Goliath and Demona) may be too complex for 5-year old boys.

* Four of the six gargoyles (Trio and Dog) appear less aggressive and silly than heroic.

* Breaking the Gargoyles kills them.

[My handwritten notes on the document follow:]
* Franken-goyle & Demona

* Pack / Xavier / Scarab Corp / Vehicles etc.

* X's Metal / Steel / Titanium Gargoyles

I saw a book on Disney once at the bookstore which included a little bit on "Gargoyles" and described it as being television's first animated drama. In your opinion, how accurate is that description? That it was Disney's first television animated drama, I certainly don't dispute, but I know that there are many people who would dispute the "first animated drama" designation for "Gargoyles" on the grounds of "Batman: TAS", for example. I was wondering what your own assessment of the statement might be.

Greg responds...

1. I'm not sure what's for sale, so I can't answer whether I had anything to do with them specifically. But if it's the videos that Disney released from the show's first season then, yes, I was a co-producer and supervising story editor of those episodes.

2. As far as I know, the only videos that Disney has released are a cut down version of the five part pilot. And four more videos that contain the eight remaining episodes of the first season. If that's what we're talking about, I think those shows are VERY good. (But of course, I'm biased.)

The "Gargoyles Bible" is a document I wrote before the production of scripts for the first season (and then revised before the production of scripts on the second season) as a guide for our writers (and whoever else was working on the series). Hi Greg. Thanks for all the memos you've been posting about the early development of the series--they're a lot of fun to read. I was wondering if you had included any of them in the Gargoyles Encyclopedia you prepared? You seem to be finding these notes sporadically, so my guess is either you didn't include them, or you summarized them into a few facts, like how the series was originally a comedy and Demona's name was Dakota, etc. I think they would be worthy additions (and hey, anything that adds to the volume of a book can only make it better! Well, unless it's assigned reading....) And you also seem to composing the episode summaries and backgrounds as you watch them, but some of the things you mention might also be nice to see in the encyclopedia. Then again, I'm making a lot of assumptions--I don't know how your encylopedia is structured (which is also something I was wondering about, if you can discuss it). Maybe it's a good thing that you haven't found a publisher yet, since it gives you the chance to add to it and make necessary changes (like those in the Future Tense spinoff). Anyways, good luck getting it published. Maybe we should invite some publishers to the Gathering to show them that there's a demand!

Sounds good to me. Know any?

The Encyclopedia is not a behind the scenes document. It's currently about cannon. And by the way, it needs a major editing job.

Gargoyles: Deeds of Deception (1998)
Gargoyles: The Force of Goliath (1998)
Gargoyles: The Hunted (1998) (V)
What are these episodes and where can I find them? Also are Pendragon and TGS seperate cartoon series and how do they tie into the Gargoyles lore? Thanks.

Greg responds...

These aren't episodes. These are home video collections of episodes. Each tape or "title" has two episodes from the first season.

I believe "The Hunted" contains "Thrill of the Hunt" and "Temptation".

"Deeds of Deception" and "The Force of Goliath" contain "Deadly Force" & "Enter Macbeth" and "The Edge" & "Long Way to Morning". But I don't remember which contains which pair.

"Brothers Betrayed" definitely includes "Her Brother's Keeper" and "Reawakening".

###please excuse any grammer or spelling errors or just plain spam and nonsence and unclear, jumpy sentences###

Hi Greg,
I was a fan of Gargoyles sometime back when it had first aired up here, I still am. I would watch it over and over again from begining to end if I had whatever station it still airs on. I was drawn to the whole story from the beginning (Like everyone else ;P ) and was really bummed out when it had finally ended (again like everyone else :P ).
I know it probably is personal to ask the questions, I'm about to ask, I dunno; But it's worth the hey.
There were alot of disapointing thoughts floating around my head about why a show with so much praise, and a wide variety of possible story lines and a good audience turn out, would have such a rough ending in it's final season. With trying to make the last season, so I thought I read; something about bumpy talks in just trying to be able to continue on for just that extra year longer with the show??. I Look at the Simpsons and wonder, what's so great about it that's had it survive over a decade on the air (Besides the MILLIONS of viewers. :/ . I started to hate it in the 6th year when I looked at it one day and asked myself.. What kind of messages is this show giving me?.. I looked at Gargoyles and found it to be much more realistic in it's scifi way, but the powering messages I got from it.. It was tremendous and it made me want more... But Yet Gargoyles? and other great shows of the past? :( Only live such short times. -.- I haven't kept up with the show since it had finally ended on Saturday morning television on channel CBS? or NBC, ugh (I can't recall) and I didn't have internet till just the last 2 years and never really realized how far the show had gone despite it's absense from the drawing board. By then the Gargoyle Fandom had gone so deep with people creating fanfics and Picts and websites .. Your Conventions.. that I didn't know where to begin.. So much information and such.. That.. I felt like a stranger. I'm in a location to up in eastern Canada, and it doesn't leave me for any place to go.. Not like I can hop in a car and go to the cons and meet people.. Which made me wonder about rebuilding something, I only seem to hear about that time seems to have forgotten. Maybe because it was forced to be shut down due to legal reasons or something I have no idea.. Which is why I also want to ask for your permission on something.

See.. I remember years ago an online role playing/chatroom type virtual game. Something called, or simular to the name ' Gargoyle's Muck ' Was it shut down for any particular reason?. I'm just wondering because I was kinda wanting to remake a Muck of that same origin, based on the episode 'Future Tense'. If you allow or disallow the making of Mucks or Mu*'s can ya let me know?.. I would like to add, that If needed I would put a Disclaimer in the Login window saying it does not infringe any copyrights.. Which Mucks normally don't do.. There are other Mucks based on other Disney shows or Movies.. ie.. The Lion King Muck for example. They are basically like an open chat room like in the forum or what ever it is you call it here on the station 8 site. I guess you already know -.-

But if you could get back to me on that I'd appriciate it.. Also would there be any harm if you could have your Board posting sensor guy (Gore) to forward your reply to my email account at kovu@pridelands.org instead of pinning it up on the board to the public? or do you not allow that either.. I appoligize if I may end up saying something out of terms which could result in You (Greg) not recieving this.. If it doesn't get through I would like to know so I could remember to not ask again in the future if need be.
And to leave off, I was wondering if there were any future plans for a return to television or the screen or even a rl movie of Gargoyles.. I have no idea if any of these have been asked before.. I appoligize for my ignorance -.- .. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was made into a RL Movie flick, So.. Why no Gargoyles.. I would love to see that.

--- Thankyou.. Sincerly: Cory Pender

Greg responds...

I don't know what a Muck is, let alone why one would be shut down. And I'm afraid I can't GIVE you permission to do anything Gargoyles related, as I don't own it. Disney does. I don't represent Disney. I'm not saying you can't do it. I'm just saying I have no idea.

And, no, I'm afraid we don't give personal direct e-mail responses here. If I sent you one, everyone would want that. And aside from the fact that I don't have the time to personally maintain e-mail correspondence with EVERYONE in the fandom, those personal e-mails would prevent everyone from getting the answers to everyone else's questions.

As to Live-Action movies, I'm going to direct you to the ASK GREG Archive that deals specifically with that topic.

Elisa was seriously injured in an episode called "Deadly Force" which was at one time available on Video. You'd have to scrounge around to find it now, I think.

I don't think it was ever adapted into the comic.

Hi Greg,

I remember going through a phase (quite a long one) where I was desperate for a GARGOYLES soundtrack. Carl Johnson's music was one of the main reasons the show hooked me. Obviously, I never got ahold of a soundtrack, as one doesn't exist. Which I find very annoying.

Disney doesn't, to my knowledge, put out soundtracks for any of their cartoons. Why? You know, and I'd think they'd know, that they could make money off it. There are plenty of collectors out there, nostalgic adults, excitable kiddies, or just plain fans. They could even release a "Disney Afternoon Collection" or something. Companies have tried marketing much stupider things. Disney music, in comparison, would be a very safe bet.

What do you think? Is there any reason Disney never explores that market avenue? Any chance they would in the future?

Greg responds...

I know, once, long before Gargoyles came out they DID release a Disney Afternoon album which included themes from DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, etc. I don't have any idea how well it sold. I just remember seeing it in the Disney Stores lo those many years ago.

Personally, I think Disney's missing a bet. But a lot has to do with "opportunity costs". A collector's market is great. But it costs money to cut a record that only a few people (relatively speaking) are going to buy. If they don't think they have a MASS market for the music, they'd probably want to spend the money on what they'd view as a bigger opportunity.

Ack, forgot to put my name on the last post. Those questions you got from "Anonymous" about gargoyle-beasts were from me. Anyways, these ones are about merchandise.

1. From what I've seen in your previous comments, especially those regarding the helicopter, you weren't too thrilled with the "Gargoyles" action figure line. Are there any "Gargoyles" related items that were produced which you do like? I just managed to obtain a set of the large Applause figures from a friend of mine. They are really nice likenesses of the characters, although I still need to repaint Demona's hair. (It's black, lest you didn't know.) And I have a soft spot for my Coldstone figure. Pretty nice likeness, good action features, plus it was a gift from the guy who was soon to be my boyfriend at the time.

2. On the flip side, is there any "Gargoyles" item you wish you could have recalled and destroyed? I seldom hear anyone with much good to say about the Macbeth figure. His costume is totaly inaccurate and the stone smashing "thingy" he wields goes against his comment in his first appearence about not stooping so low as to smash the clan while they sleep. I wish the Elisa figure had her regular costume. And while I can live with the "Heroes Awaken" version of "Awakening", I really dislike the box art.

3. In order to end this on a more positive note, is there anything in particular you would have liked to see made? A certain figure? Statues? Art books? Bedsheets?

Thanks as always for your time.

Greg responds...

1. That's not really true. It was very cool to see the gargs "brought to life" as toys. Some of the figures, particularly Brooklyn, were very flawed. But even so, I generally loved the first wave of toys. My disappointment was that they ended up making so few characters. Just taking the Batman approach and remaking multiple versions of everyone. I was VERY glad when they finally made Coldstone. I love that figure. And though the "screen" on his chest obviously doesn't really exist on the show, I thought it was a great idea for a toy. True to the spirit of a very confused character.

2. Recall? No. Fix? Sure.

3. That Lexington doorknob. But seriously, I'd have like to have seen more action figures covering more of our characters. Angela at least. And personally, I'd have liked to have been given the opportunity to write a series of novels.

LASER DISKS

My friend and fellow producer Jonathan Klein has just informed me that the TOWER RECORDS OUTLET STORE on Hollywood Blvd (in the mall with the Galaxy Theater, just east of La Brea) has multiple LASER DISK copies of the GARGOYLES animated "movie" available for $7 each.

Now, I never knew they released this on laser disk so I have no idea which of the three versions it is.

It could be the five episodes of the pilot collected together.

It's probably the version of the pilot which we edited for the big screen premiere in Orlando in '94, which was later released on home video.

But it may be the version that somebody edited as a TV movie for syndication.

Or, since it's a Laser Disk, it's possible it contains all three. I don't know. I haven't seen it myself.

But I just thought you'd all want to know.

1.) What did you think of the action figures that Kenner put out of Gargoyles?
2.) If you could pick one character they didn't make a figure of, who would it be?
3.) What kind of merchandise do you wish they did?

Greg responds...

1. I liked them generally. They weren't perfect, but it's hard to describe to you how cool it feels to see your own characters as action figures.
--Brooklyn was a bit of a letdown. He was supposed to have a special feature inside his jaw, which is why his head and neck are so distorted. But that special feature was too expensive, so all we get is a bad sculpt.
--Broadway looks cool to me with no neck, reminds me of something I once saw in Disney's Haunted Mansion.
--Lex's wings aren't quite right, but if you pose him correctly it's hard to notice.
--I think one of the Goliath's is great.
--And another one made a great Thailog once I applied liquid paper to his hair.
--Demona's great.
--And my wife turned a second Demona into an Angela that's pretty O.K.
--Macbeth's skin color is odd, but otherwise he's pretty cool. --I'm fine with the Steel Clan Robot.
--And Xanatos, once they got the color of his armor right. --Elisa's a little pale, and she's wearing the wrong clothes of course, but I can generally live with that. We kept her too often in the same clothes anyway. Some of my favorite episodes are the ones where we varied her wardrobe.
--Hudson works too.
--And I just LOVE Bronx.
--Coldstone is very cool and thematic -- i.e., the screen with the multiple personalities is an interesting addition.
--But all those umpteen variations on the characters were tiresome. I wish they had just made a greater variety of characters.

2. If I could only pick one, it would have to be Angela. I begged them to do her. But they wouldn't because neither Demona or Elisa sold very well. After Angela, the list is fairly endless. I'd start with Talan probably, add in Pack members, etc. Etc. Etc.

3. I'd love it if they had let me write some novels.

Dear Greg, First off I wanted to tell you that Gargoyles is my all time favorite cartoon. I loved the twisting storylines that always kept me guessing what would happen next. Another reason I love the show so much is all the voice talent from actors/actresses that starred in Star Trek shows. I watch the show all the time on toon disney and I know the show was cancelled a while back. This brings me to my question. I was visiting a website called the internet movie database (www.imdb.com) and under Gargoyles it has listed several episodes or movies that were made in 1998 and 1999. I was wondering if you were involved with these and if you know where I could find them? Also I was recently in a blockbuster video and on their preview show they have running in the store there was a segment on gargoyles and it said there are 2 new movies coming out, again are you involved with these and do you know what it is about? Thank you for your time and effort and most of all thank you for creating the gargoyles.

Greg responds...

It sounds like your information is or was innacurate. There haven't been any new episodes since the 96-97 season of Goliath Chronicles. The first season was released on Home Video, but that was also some time ago. A new version of AWAKENING was edited together without my input and placed in a movie syndication package that can occasionally be seen on television. The original 65 episodes air on Toon Disney twice a night. Touchstone is developing a Live-Action Movie. But they don't have a useable script yet.

That's all I know of, and all I think there is to know.

Because my ramble-replies to "Temptation", "Deadly Force", and "Enter Macbeth" were all lost in the recent crash, I'm sending reconstructed versions in again. This one's for "Temptation".

One thing that I really like about this episode is Demona's development. She's in the wrong, but she's convincingly in the wrong, as she explains why humans will never accept gargoyles. Even Goliath has to admit at the end that what she told Brooklyn about humans is partly (but only partly) true. It's part of what makes her such an effective villain.

At the same time, Elisa shows at the end, by her loyalty to the clan, and her cleverness in finding a way of freeing Goliath from the spell, that not all humans are evil or anti-gargoyle, an important point. (That's why I don't really mind Elisa's means of freeing Goliath, even if it is, as you mentioned, borderline "cheating". The reward that came from showing that some humans could help gargoyles more than outweighed the problem in question). Merely showing Demona to be treacherous and scheming wouldn't be enough to counter her arguments.

And Brooklyn comes across very sympathetically, too. I liked your analysis of his behavior in this episode.

The Cloisters bit is one of my favorite parts, especially where Brooklyn talked about it being so much like "the world that we came from". (And no, I didn't think that that meant that the gargoyles were aliens; I understood that he was talking about medieval Scotland). That part clicked for me because of my (mentioned before) fondness for things relating to the Middle Ages.

And I was amused by your little bit about the motorcycle. Between that and the "garg-chopper" in "Her Brother's Keeper", it's pretty clear that the gargoyles' vehicles never seem to last very long. (Not that that's really surprising; as Goliath pointed out in "Protection", gargoyles supply their own transportation, which makes fancy motorcycles and aircraft for them pretty much redundant).

(I take it that the "Eye of the Storm" "suggested toy" that you eluded to was Goliath in his "Odinic" form?)

Greg responds...

THUNDER STORM GOLIATH, or something like that, yeah. I think they wound up making Hudson or someone else the Thunder Storm Toy. (I remember Brooklyn was ice storm.) Oh, well.

Chapter XVI: "Legion"

Story Editor: Michael Reaves
Written by Marty Isenberg & Robert N. Skir

I just watched "Legion" again. Time to Ramble.

From the memo I posted earlier this week, you'll see that the never used on screen names of Othello, Desdemona and Iago were my idea. But I've always wondered if that's the case. The outline that Marty and Bob wrote immediately prior to that memo had all the Othello elements very, very present in the story. All they didn't do was NAME the characters. I always wondered whether they and/or Michael had the Othello story specifically in mind, consciously or un-, and I just capitalized on it.

The Goldencup Bakery Building, which semi-secretly houses a defense department hi-tech research and development installation is modeled after the Silver Cup Bakery Building -- which actually exists in Brooklyn (as I recall). That Building was trashed in the original HIGHLANDER movie in the final battle between Connor and the Kragen (who was played by a pretty damned horrific Clancy Brown). Small world.

I was always worried that the whole Othello, Desdemona, Iago, Cassio (whoops, I mean Goliath) backstory was a bit vague in this episode. Did anyone have problems getting it?

I don't think I'd like to be one of those Goldencup Guards. Coldstone punches one of them out. That's gotta hoit. He just seems fairly unstoppable in that Xanatos-program controlled sequence. I like how that plays.

Matt says to Elisa: "You never let me drive." My wife's reaction: "Was that in homage to me?" My wife, you see, almost always drives when we're together. She gets carsick when anyone else drives. And I don't much care.

Speaking of Matt, we've got that line about him spending six months reading RECAP manuals to justify why a normal detective would be in charge of RECAP in the first place. Just trying to avoid either adding a superfluous character and/or making the situation seem artificial.

Another appearance of the Scarab Corp. Logo, even though Scarab is never mentioned by name. Oh, well...

Coldstone flees the Goldencup. Goliath and Lex pursue, and Coldstone attacks them. Then he immediately stops, when he sees it's Goliath. The problem I always had with that scene is that the lighting made it obvious that it was Goliath from moment one. (Not just to us, but to Coldstone.) If Goliath had been in shadows, it would have played better.

Minutes later Lex asks Goliath if it's wise to take Coldstone into their home: "He hasn't always been your friend." This was, theoretically, a reference not simply to the most recent attack, nor even only to the events of "Reawakening", but also a reference to the pre-Massacre backstory of the actually non-existent love triangle (or square or pentagram if you include Demona) that caused Goliath and Othello to fight way back when. Lex remembers those days too. Othello was always a bit of a hot-head.

I love Goliath's response: "Without trust there can be no clan." And I love that this is part of a Lex/Goliath exchange. It fits in perfectly with the message they taught each other in "Thrill of the Hunt". Gotta take some chances on occasion. Or else you'll always be alone. It's an anti-Demona mentality. Or rather a mentality that is strikingly un-Demona-esque.

From the moment Coldstone premiered in "Reawakening" I knew (that if we survived to a second season) we'd discover that he was created from three Gargoyles. Tried to work that conceptually into the design more, but we never quite achieved it. So basically that becomes something that the audience has to take on trust.

Which brings me to the title "Legion". It's a one-word title which usually is a tip-off that it's one of mine. I know it's a biblical reference. Some possessed guy with a demon/devil inside who goes by the name "Legion". But that's not actually where I got it. When I was a kid, I saw this tv movie based on Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN. It starred Michael Sarazan or Chris Sarandon. (I always used to mix those two guys up.) It was trying to present a more realistic believable version of the Frankenstein story. I was pretty young. And I don't remember too much about it. I do remember that I was supposed to be asleep -- past my bedtime in the days before my parents gave up and I began going to bed long after they were asleep. But instead of being asleep, I was watching it, in the dark, with the volume turned as far down as possible, me sitting right by the set, so I could flip it off if I heard my parents' door opening. (This was long before remote controls were common.) Anyway, the one scene that I really remember is a scene where they put the Monster under hypnosis. The voices of all the people who "donated" body parts begin to speak. And one of them quotes the "Legion" thing from the bible. But I didn't know that. That is I didn't know back then that he was quoting anyone or anything. It just seemed like a very powerful, poetic and humanly true statement. So it wasn't until college that I read that passage in the bible and realized where it was from. Can anyone cite the actual quote? I can't remember where exactly it's from, and I don't feel like searching right now.

Anyway, all this is relevant because Coldstone was ALWAYS our Frankenstein character from the "IT'S ALIVE!" moment to the "Legion" stuff here.

Coldstone calls Hudson "Mentor". That's a "name" I've been long considering for Hudson's "designation" in the DARK AGES prequel spin-off.

Coldstone shoots Goliath at point blank range. Goliath gets up unharmed. A far cry from what happened to G in "Long Way to Morning." Now in the outline and script, it says that Coldstone uses his "concussion cannon" as opposed to his laser cannon. But nothing in the as-aired episode makes that distinction. And so it just looks irresponsible to me. Like suddenly we're saying violence has no repercussions. Did that bother anyone else?

I love the dark comedy of Coldstone going bonkers at Ellis Island. Fighting with himself. I think Michael Dorn did a terrific job playing all four aspects of CS's personality. Which of you figured out what when? I'd like to know.

The Trio has the Recap visor. Now all they have to do is find Goliath, Hudson and Coldstone. How will they do that? "Three guesses?" A very elegant way to explain how in a huge city, they're able to locate three gargoyles.

Kenner's Coldstone toy is a lot of fun. With it's window into Coldstone's soul. And the spinner that allows any of the four personas to take over at random.

Xanatos doesn't even appear until the VERY END of Act Two. And it's not even really Xanatos, just a program designed by him. Normally, I'd say that wasn't playing fair. But I feel like his presence was obvious all-along. (And did David personally design that program. Or did he just put his stamp on it, management-style?)

There's a moment when Goliath, thrilled to see his rookery sister again, hugs Desdemona. She is immediately annoyed, because she knows that hug is prone to misinterpretation. It's a nice little touch in the animation.

I always wondered what if anything Demona thought about that ancient conflict way back when. Was Iago playing her as well? Trying to make her jealous of Desdemona? I think maybe he did try. But wouldn't it be cool if she didn't credit it for a second. If she just knew intuitively that Desdemona didn't present any threat at all to her relationship with G? Because, I feel the opposite is true. That Demona knew intuitively that Elisa DID present a threat. Say what you want for Demona, but her subconscious knows her man.

I love that moment where BOTH Iago and Xanatos are whispering in Othello's ears. Poor slob never stood a chance.

We've got a nice little Xanatos tag in this one too. Certainly not a doozy as in "Leader" or "Metamorphosis", but it's got a nice little kick to it, I think. And that's THREE episodes in a row. X had been busy.

And then I love the last beat back at the clock tower. Goliath has confiscated Coldstone's body, to keep it safe and "among friends" should he/she ever wake up again. I wanted to keep it in the corner from that point until "High Noon". Always present and visible. We didn't for two reasons. First, we figured it would be a bit confusing. The Batcave can get away with the giant penny and other souvenirs from Batman's cases, because there ARE multiple souvenirs. But just having one immobile gargoyle in the background, as cool and creepy as that is, would be horribly distracting for any audience member who missed this one particular episode. And second, we had our tier system. What if "Legion" wasn't ready as scheduled. We couldn't have Coldstone sitting around the clock tower in later episodes that we'd be forced to air first. Talk about disconcerting. So we invented a back room. Where Coldstone, the Grimorum, the Gate and eventually the eye could be stored.

'THRILL OF THE HUNT' comments.

Hi there, Greg. I'll be a bit behind everyone else with these comments I'm afraid. Should I put episode comments in separate posts if I talk about separate episodes? I'll do it just to be on the safe side.

Anyway, I like this episode a lot. It gives us the best view of Lexington's personality of the 66 (or indeed, 78), and I like the Pack here. Actually, the Pack appeal to me more here than in most of their subsequent outings. The predator/prey irony is very appealing, but the 'Evil Ninjas' amused me too. I wonder what happened to all those guys?

I never understood why this was listed under your list of dodgy animation anyway, really. Goliath was especially well-drawn throughout.

Loved Billy and Susan. The injustice is immensely frustrating to me, which of course is what makes it so great.

Incidentally, the first scene was nifty too. I'm not sure what about it appeals to me so much; maybe the great drawing, maybe the 'calm before the storm' tone, or maybe it's just because it's got Owen looking so... Owen. But it always sticks in my mind.

Pity that the last time I watched it (about a year ago), I pressed the wrong button after I wound it back and taped over this and most of 'TEMPTATION' before I realise what I'd done. Humbug. (It also took me forever to tape in the first place; Disney Channel UK ran through the whole series but played 'LONG WAY TO MORNING' twice in the proper spot and instead of 'THRILL OF THE HUNT'. Seems like it's one of those doomed episodes for me... not as doomed as 'MONSTERS' which I tried three times and had a disaster each time, but...
