Do you have any concerns about Gargoyles being anime? I ask this because of the video game franchise: Kingdom Hearts

Greg responds...

What does that mean, "being anime"?

I'm a big fan of the series, thoroughly losing myself in the universe when I was younger. For the last few days I've been catching up on happy memories (and take note of how each episode runs through the numerous plots and sub-plots, am a writer these days), and want to know if there is a novelisation planned?

Greg responds...

No. Not that I wouldn't jump at the chance if any publisher was interested.

I wrote a short story based on Broadway and Brooklyn way back in high school for english class. My teacher told me that it was one of the best, mosy imaginitive stories she's ever read. I have completed a novel which includes the Gargoyles, the first in a series of six. I want to get the book published. How can I get permission to use the characters?

Greg responds...

You can try to ask Disney.

But on principal, I'm not going to encourage you. Personally, I'd prefer you write something based on your own creation and publish that... as opposed to piggy-backing on something of mine.

Has there ever been the thought of an all new original story via video game? Could maybe have stylized graphics maybe like the cartoon or in a more 3D fashion, but could be a great way to have an all new interactive story..... Just a thought. I'm picking up God Of War 3 tomorrow, and I love what they have did with it..... I can totally see a Gargoyles game, especially if done right..... =)

Thanks for your time!

Greg responds...

It's NOT up to me. But I'm all for it. Make it so!

I was the one who just asked about a desdemona or iago aciton figure but there is something else i was very anxious to know does disney have any plans on putting any of my favorite gargoyles in any kingdom hearts games or possibly a video game of their own besides the one from like 12 years ago. i was thinking about mabey even a gargoyles game for Nintendo ds or psp that starts out during the war at castle wyvern and allows you to fight as a garogyle or a soldguier to assist the gargoyles and lets you play after they awaken 1000 years later and face off agains xanatos and macbeth and takes you through avalon and allows you to aslo play as elisa and any of the gargoyles.

Greg responds...

Not to my knowledge.

You know I've been to the Gargwiki, and you have a lot of characters like Artus and such that have no pictures, and I heard you aren't publishing anymore series, but instead of doing a series, why don't you do like a "bonus" book that only lists characters old or new, and give bios underneath their protraits.
I think it might be cool for your series.

Greg responds...

It's not up to me.

Hello, Greg. I am a person who recently started watching the old Gargoyles cartoons. I ask this question regarding the Gargoyles' relation to Disney, & what it could mean for an upcoming Disney video game called Epic Mickey. What do you think the likeliness is that the Gargoyles will show up in the game?

Greg responds...

I'd guess highly unlikely, but I don't know anything at all about "Epic Mickey" so...

Hey Greg,

I'm sure it's cliche and you're tired of hearing it by now, but I loved Gargoyles as a kid and continue to do so...I guess there's no need to go into any more detail than that. Just wanted to start off by saying thanks for all the hard work.

Anyways, onto the questions:

1. With the Marvel/Disney merger, what are the odds now that we'll see you pick up where you left off on the Gargoyles comic?
2. Does SLG still own all the rights to the comics you wrote for them or is it all owned by Disney and thus now a part of Marvel as well?

Now that the semi-practical questions are out of the way, time for my far nerdier side to kick in:

3. If asked to do a Marvel/Gargoyles crossover, who would be your first choice in Marvel character to cross over with? And since it's likely to be Spidey, who's your second?
4. Have you been approached about bringing Gargoyles into a future Kingdom Hearts game?

Thanks,
Phil

Greg responds...

1. I don't know that the Marvel merger has any effect on Gargoyles.

2. For starters, Disney owns Marvel, not the other way around. Marvel has no control or say over Gargoyles. But I don't know the specifics of the Disney/SLG deal or who owns the reproduction rights. I do know that Disney maintains ownership of the intellectual property including anything added in the comics.

3. Uh... I'm not that excited about the idea at all. But I guess the Defenders.

4. No.

Hello! I'm very sorry to have heard about the license for the comic expiring, but I'm gearing up for the TPBs which should be out shortly (assuming amazon.com's dates are accurate).

Since the license for the comics has a questionable future at best, I was curious as to how likely Disney would be about licensing Gargoyles for other purposes, namely rpgs & video games. I am huge pen & paper roleplaying game fan (or nerd, for short), and the Gargoyles universe would make a great setting. How likely would Disney be to go for something like that, assuming Disney even knows what an rpg is?

Greg responds...

TPBs are in fact out. If you don't have 'em yet, order 'em now! (Please.)

I'm sure Disney's willing to license it. The question is anyone interested in paying the licensing fee.

I recently came across a stand-up arcade cab version of the Gargoyles video game produced for the Sega Genesis. This game is themed in Gargoyles artwork and can play any Sega Genesis game via a cartridge slot in the control panel. I am trying to find more information about the origin, construction and marketing of this unit. I have reviewed the FAQ's and understand that you are not a gamer, but if you can point me in the right direction where I can get more information about this cab, I would greatly appreciate it.

You can see pictures of this unit on my blog at http://www.2old2play.com/Blog/waterborn

Last question: If you were ever given the chance to work on a Gargoyles game on one of today's consoles, which one will it be and why? What kinds of things would you include in the game?

Thanks again, and sorry for the trouble I caused with the last question I asked in... March, was it? I'm not talking about Disney and licensing issues again. Thank you for your time.

Greg responds...

I'm not a gamer. It's all greek to me.

I heard a rumor that a Gargoyles-themed world might be made for the in development Kingdom Hearts 3. I was skeptical at first but a little research showed that with the exception of some of the main characters who were voiced by mainstream actors (Goliath, Elisa, Demona, Xanatos, etc), a significant portion of the other Gargoyles voice actors are already working or have worked on KH (Jeff Bennett, Jim Cummings, Matt Frewer, Cree Summer). Do you know if there is any truth to this? From a story standpoint, the Gargoyle's universe seems to lend itself well to videogames like KH.

Greg responds...

I'd bet it's just a rumor. I've heard nothing about this. I haven't even heard the rumor.

Dear Greg,

I've been trying to locate the original Gargoyles Trailer (or Teaser) featured on VHS from when I was younger (presumably, before the movie/show came out). It's the trailer that shows Elisa's perspective as stones fall from Xanatos's castle, where she comments: "What could be strong enough to leave claw marks in solid stone?" At the same time this is happening, the title "Gargoyles" is being panned across the screen (similar to "The Terminator"). I have not been able to find it on YouTube or Google search, or even this website. If you know of a link or website featuring it, I would appreciate your help locating it.

Thanks,
Nik Z.

Greg responds...

I don't. Sorry. I'd suggest trying to find the Nightmare Before Christmas VHS on E-Bay. I think that's where it appeared. I think.

Do you think you would ever post the actual scripts of the shows you've worked on? W.I.T.C.H. , Gargoyles, Spiderman ect. I would love to read them. I've never actually seen a cartoon script and I was wondering the major differences format/process wise vs film scripts.(which seem easy to find off the internet, but I don't know any sites that offer libraries of animation and comic formats)Thanks!

PS love the new spiderman episodes!

Greg responds...

Different issues for different shows.

For Spider-Man, the answer for the time being is no. The show is (hopefully) on-going, and posting the scripts -- even first season scripts -- might reveal secrets I don't want revealed.

For Gargoyles, I don't have electronic copies of most of the scripts. Really, I only have "The Journey". And I definitely don't have the time to transcribe them.

W.I.T.C.H. is more of a possibility. But you're asking about Format and all formatting would be lost if I posted the script here at ASK GREG.

Inspired by a discussion we had in the Comment Room two weeks ago, I wanted to ask about Gargoyle merchandise, from action figures and books to kites and food and beyond:
Do you currently have any merchandise displayed in your home?
What was your favorite piece of Gargoyles merchandise?
What piece was the biggest let down for you?
What piece of merchandise do you wish had been made? (Any thing from a squeaky toy, Beanie Babies, footie PJs, anything crazy that may pop into your head)

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2. The "READ" poster, I think.

3. Brooklyn's head, I guess.

4. An Angela action figure.

Hello Greg,

Gosh, it's been over 7 years since I asked a question here!

First off, I'd just like to say how thrilled I am that you still continue to push for Gargoyles to reach the fans. No matter the medium! Before the comics, I lived for the "Ask Greg" section of this site, (I still enjoy reading here when time away from work and my horses allows). The comics have really been a godsend. It's always a disappointment to find your favorite show has no new material in the works, so I commend you for helping to keep Gargoyles alive and available to us all no matter what obstacle you must cross.

I'm very upset to hear about the license situation with the comic, but I have not given up hope for the future spin offs and further stories.

I'd guess you write timelines and probably have notebooks and computer documents full of continuing ideas. Have you ever thought about doing an encyclopedia/compliation with all of the characters, places and events as well as future events you have outlined? (Obviously with Disney's approval of course)

I apologize if the question has already been asked. I searched the archives and didn't see a mention. (There are alot of pages!)

Best of luck, keep up the good work and Long live the Gargoyles!

Greg responds...

I've thought often about it. No publisher has ever expressed any interest.

Something I thought of while playing around in the iTunes store: Do you think that Gargoyles has a chance of being put up on iTunes for purchase and, if so, what effect that would have on its future?

Now I dont know much about how iTunes works but it doesnt seem like something Disney could really lose money on. They just put the episodes up there and theyre either bought or theyre not. It seems cheaper than relesing them on DVD because then Disney doesnt have to spend money on designing box art, gathering extra/special content, advertising, and other stuff that has to do with selling a DVD set. Probably cheaper than if Disney finally made the Season 2, Part 2 DVD set.

It doesnt seem like there's really a way to lose money if they put it up on iTunes. Its not like the episodes could waste money by gathering dust on a shelf if they were avaliable on iTunes. And if the episodes made decent money, maybe it would reflect positivly on the comic's future. What do you think?

Greg responds...

I think it would be a great idea.

I apologise ahead of time, this is not an "artful" or creative question, but assuming I have hit an educated site, I am in need of information. I am in possession of 3 cels and numerous Gargoyle merchandise, and have an immediate need to sell them. I am humiliated, but we are down to 3 dollars and need to find a venue fast. I have no idea what they are worth, but would at least like a direction where they will be appreciated. We lost all ina fire and the insurance reneged. These items were stored specially with other like items so we are lucky to have them, but they are not saleable locally. Any suggestions would be helpful...thank you...and your site is great..my grown son is an artist and has long been a fan..

Greg responds...

I'm sorry for your troubles, and I'm sorry I can't be of much help - particularly two months after you posted. I don't know anything about how to sell stuff. E-bay, maybe? Or you could ask in the Station 8 Comment Room.

Greg responds...

Nope.

HOT TOPIC T-SHIRT

Word has come to me that the HOT TOPIC chain of retail stores is selling a GARGOYLES T-SHIRT...

http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/store/product.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302029045&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442173198&bmUID=1204124623623

This is terrific news! (The moreso BECAUSE I had absolutely nothing to do with it, and it comes as a total surprise.)

This is also a GREAT opportunity for the fans. How do we prove to Disney, Buena Vista, Hot Topic, etc. that Gargoyles is a viable property? WITH OUR WALLETS! First chance I get I'm buying a shirt... (and I'm a guy with about 100 gargoyles t-shirts). As always, I'm not asking you to spend money you don't have or that you need for food or shelter or education. But if you have any disposable income and you care about keeping the property alive there is NO BETTER way then to buy a shirt. Need a birthday present for a friend or relative? Buy a shirt! You want the next DVD set to come out? Buy a shirt!

Keep in mind I don't make a penny off these shirts. But this is a REAL opportunity for us!

And as always, at the very least, help us SPREAD THE WORD: HOT TOPIC HAS GARGOYLES SHIRTS!!!

Hi Greg, thanks for Gargoyles.

1. Any chance that Wendy Pini might illustrate one of the new comics?
2. Does SLG have any plans for Gargoyles action figures or statues? (I assume Disney would be involved in any merchandising as well, might make things difficult?)

Cheers

Greg responds...

1. I doubt we could afford her -- and I'm sure she's way too busy, but it is lovely that she did the intro to the TPB, don't you think?

2. I don't think SLG has the license to do anything Garg-related except the comics.

Hi Greg, I am interested in seeing some of the early character designs for the Gargoyles characters. Is there anywhere online that we can view them? And if not, could you possibly make them available?

Also I have been thinking about the upcoming trade paperback. TPBs sometimes have extras in the back, so if you don't make the character designs available online, is this something you might put in the TPB?

Greg responds...

I don't have access to this stuff either. It's all in the Disney archives somewhere, I assume. There have been a few years where former guest coordinator Carol Wagner arranged for exhibits of old designs at the Gathering. And of course some of the old designs are visible on the extras for the DVD. The TPB will also have extras but they're not likely to be old designs from the show. Again, I have no access.
