I noticed there are numerous references to the number sixteen in Young Justice including:
-a 16 member justice league
-from reports this is an Earth 16
-Miss Martian is 16 in Martian Years
-Connor is 16 weeks
Is this some sort of in-joke on the part of the crew or is there a much deeper reason?

Two questions about Young Justice:
1. When rumors of a Young Justice cartoon first began to appear online the roster was said to include(going off memory here)"Nightwing,Martian Girl, and Impulse". Was this simply a mistake/rumor or did the roster undergo some changes?
2. Somewhat related to the first question. I was suprised(though not upset)to learn that it would be Dick Grayson and Wally West in the show rather than Tim Drake and Bart Allen. It made sense once I read that this is a young DC Universe. Was the plan always to start in the early days and see the DCU evolve?

1. Mistake and rumor. I assume "Nightwing, Martian Girl, and Impulse" was someone's error for "Robin (Dick Grayson), Miss Martian (M'gann M'orzz) and Kid Flash (Wally West)". Our roster has been the same pretty much from day one.

Hi. First, I heard about what happened to the Spectacular Spider-Man. I'm sorry you didn't have a chance to do all the things you wanted to do. I would have loved to see stories Venom vs. Carnage, Harry Osborn as the New Green Goblin, the Hobgoblin, the deaths of Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn or a shortened version of the Clone Saga or the return of Norman Osborn. Ah, well, so much for possibilities.
Anyway, I'd like to ask about Young Justice:
1) Will you be adapting Young Justice or Teen Titans storylines (i.e., Young Justice: A World without Grown-Ups)?
2) I heard that Red Arrow (or at least, the Roy Harper before Cry for Justice and "Rise" of Arsenal, which I don't know if you've heard of) and Tempest will show up. Any other Titans or Young Justice characters that will show up as the show progresses?

Hi Greg,
I'm a big fan. I work in South Korea teaching English and I thought you would be interested in your creations' progress over here.
I did some research on the internet and Gargoyles: The Movie and some season 1 episodes were released on VHS over here. What a collector's item those would be? The official translated name of the show is "Champion Goliath", but happily enough online Korean fans just call it "Gargoyles."
Channel surfing, I did see The Spectacular Spider-Man on the cartoon channel, 5:30, Saturday morning. That's actually a good time, since Korean children have Saturday school and 5:30am would be just the right time they're waking up.
Keep up the good work and hopefully I'll see Young Justice in Korea.

Hey, Greg! Long time, no see!
Sorry to hear about Spectacular Spider-Man - well, actually, I'm more sorry for myself, but that's beside the point. It was a great 26 episodes, and it will always be remembered as what is quite possibly the greatest adaptation of Spider-Man since The Man created our web-slinger!
That said, I'm very excited about the Young Justice series! Though I have some knowledge of the DC universe (mainly through Bruce Timm's various adaptations), I'm not familiar with any of these characters (aside from Robin, of course), and can't wait to see what you do with it! I'm particularly intrigued by your recent comment that this is a series in which not everyone will make it.... Didn't see that coming. :D
Well, this is more of a eulogy/praise/appreciation comment, but I do have one quick question: Which Robin are you using in the series? (Sorry if it's been answered before - I didn't notice anything, though.)

For Young Justice, were there any restrictions to the dc universe characters that you could use (aside from Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl)? Is there anything like the Bat-embargo that JLU had?

Wonder Woman IS in the series. She was never off limits.
There is a VERY small handful of characters that we aren't allowed to use in Season One. (And by handful, I mean I could count them on one hand.) The list WAS longer when we first developed the series and broke down the first season, but it's grown shorter since.
But I should make the point that (a) we already have a metric ton of DC Universe characters appearing in Season One and (b) 98% of the decisions as to who would and wouldn't appear were CREATIVE decisions made by Brandon Vietti and myself. Some characters aren't appearing in Season One, because creatively we felt they didn't belong there -- having nothing to do with any external restrictions.
So some characters that will not appear in Season One, may appear in Season Two (if in success we get a pick-up), either because now we CAN use them or because that's where we ALWAYS wanted them from day one ... or both.

Part of my job is writing scripts. I've written four already and will probably write two more in the first season.
I'm also the story editor for all 26 scripts.
I'm also one of two producers on the show, so I at least comment on pretty much every aspect of production.

4. Yes. DC assigned Earth-16 to us. We're a parallel universe, but still part of their overall multiverse continuity. Some things will be very parallel. Other things will differ quite a bit, and everything in between.
5. That will eventually become obvious.

This is touching on the type of theoretical questions you hate, but I’ll attempt it…
Are there any shows you watch that you wish you were involved in? Any shows you are glad you weren’t involved with because you wouldn’t want it any other different than it is? Any shows you didn’t enjoy, but think you could have made the concept shine? I don’t necessarily mean something you worked on and it didn’t work out, (like when you wrote the series bible to Roswell Conspiracies or the like), I mean even seeing a cartoon as an adult that you enjoyed as a child and thinking ‘if I were doing that…’. That creative itch that sometimes hits when watching a show and really wanting to play in that sandbox.
I figure either you'll hate this question or one or two examples will suddenly spring to mind.

Yeah... I would have loved to work with Joss Whedon on Buffy or Angel or Firefly. Not that I think I would have improved on it, but I would just have loved to play in that world with the master.
There are cartoon series I was really jealous of, like the MTV Spider-Man series. But (no surprise) I'm over that now.
I haven't seen anything but a few clips of the upcoming series, so this isn't a comment on it per se, but I would have loved to do an Avengers series. Frankly, I would have loved to have taken what we did on SpecSpidey and widened it, building an entire Marvel Universe. It's one of the things that's so fun about Young Justice. We're not just adapting YJ or Teen Titans, but the entire DC Universe (or one of them (#16) anyway).
The Highlander TV series was one where I thought it had moments of greatness, but was also a bit of a mess at times. I would have loved the POWER (Bwahaha) to grab the reins of that one.
I'm sure there are plenty of other examples, as I have generally -- and I'm not proud of this -- lived a professional life filled with (and marred by) tremendous ENVY. I just can't think of any others at this time. At least not any others that wouldn't get me in some trouble. ;)

Looking forward to the new cartoon. I am a huge fan of Young Justice… of course that could be a double edged sword. I don’t want to ask any specifics that I might as well just wait and see, but in most general terms: When I saw the poster image it made me think more of Teen Titans than Young Justice, of course the line between dramatic and angsty is very thin and subjective. Afterwards I saw a clip of Ms Stirtis talking about being Queen Bee, traditionally a Teen Titan villain. Is this cartoon based mainly on Young Justice or on the two series? Personally I prefer the tone of YJ over TT, but I'm open to new things. (I’ve been reading TT to keep up with the YJ characters. When I was finally going to give up on it they brought in Blue Beetle, another ‘gone too soon’ book, so I stayed.)

Are any of the YJ comic book characters not in the image going to show or play important roles in the cartoon? Most obviously Secret?
Is it true there is some sort of legal snare that keeps Wonder Girl out of cartoons? wait..ignore this one, someone asked it ahead of me.
Did you choose to make Bart Kid Flash instead of Impulse or was that decision from on high?

The tone of the comic series Young Justice was pretty much the arena of the Teen Titans animated series. We are in fact going for something a bit more dramatic and realistic, despite the name. But that's NOT to say there won't be humor in the series. If you've seen my work on Spectacular Spider-Man and other series, you know that drama and comedy are not mutually exclusive in my book.
The new Young Justice series is based on elements from the original 1960s Teen Titans, the 90s Young Justice and even more recent Teen Titans and Justice League comics. Plus everything in between. In some ways, this series is an adaptation of the entire DC Universe. But the key word is "adaptation". I strive (as does my "new" producing partner Brandon Vietti) with any adaptation (again cf SpecSpidey) to stay true to the spirit and intent of each and every character. But that doesn't mean there won't be changes. You wouldn't want a show with zero surprises, right?
Of course, another perfectly legit way to look at this is that the entire series is set on Earth-16 and Universe-16 (out of DC's 52-universe multiverse). It's a parallel universe, a parallel Earth, so some things will be the same and other will not. All without diverging from DC's multiverse continuity.
Artemis is neither Argent nor Arrowette.
Whether or not Secret appears is a... secret.
Brandon and I chose WALLY WEST as Kid Flash over Bart Allen as Impulse in part because it is EARLY DAYS in this particular DC UNIVERSE. And Wally was the original Kid Flash, just as Dick Grayson was the original Robin.
We're slated to premiere in November.

I just saw the teaser for "Young Justice" and I'm very excited. I don't know most of these characters well or at all, but the premise sounds great and I can't wait to see what you do with it.
In the comments for the teaser video on YouTube, I noticed that someone had said that there was a legal issue that prevented you from using Wonder Girl. Is that true or is it just one of those odd rumors like your supposed hatred of Carnage? I don't really mind her absence since I don't know the character well; I'm just curious.

There is NO LONGER a legal issue about Wonder Girl. But there was when we originally developed the series.

Congratulations on your new gig with Young Justice. I'm eagerly awaiting the premiere because YJ was one of my first superhero comics I really collected. Now obviously the cast has been expanxded beyond the original team, but I was curious do you have plans for the character Secret? Or Cassie Wonder Girl? They were such fun characters and I did love them so. Also, will you be interpreting any stories from the original book (IE Sins of Youth, their trip to Myrg, Arrowette/Artemis almost killing a guy)?

Oh, but I will say this, since I said it at ComicCon: Artemis is NOT Arrowette (Cissie). Two different characters.
Artemis is also not Speedy (Mia) or Wonder Girl (any of them) or an Amazon (at all) or from Apokolips (period). But she is an existing DC Comics character. We did NOT create her. In fact, I'm somewhat surprised no one seems to have identified her.

No episodes are complete yet, though we have 14 scripts done out of the initial order of 26. The other twelve are all in the works.

1. All shows are different and unique, but it's basically the same job.
2. Yes.
3. Uh... I assume you mean network vs. syndicated, since EVERY show I've ever worked on was a studio project. But I don't think I've worked on a syndicated project since Roughnecks. There aren't a lot of significant differences, except perhaps that with no network, there's one less company looking over your shoulder.
4. Not significantly.

Well, I've finally caught up with the backlog here at ASK GREG. I'm going to take a short Ask Greg vacation, and then we'll be reopening the site soon... i.e. on the Monday (July 26th) AFTER San Diego Comic-Con 2010.
As always, I ask that before you post a question you do your best to make sure it's not a question that's been answered in the archives already AND that it's not a question that someone posted just before you. I noticed a lot of the Voice actors from Gargoyles appear in Spectacular Spider-Man. Once you finally get the chance for more episodes, do you plan on getting more Gargoyles actors to play a role in the show? If so, which do you have in mind?

A great actor is a great actor, so you'll see me using folks I've used before constantly. But with Spec Spidey over, you'll just need to wait and see whom we use on Young Justice.

Wow. This has been a big couple of weeks ANNOUNCEMENT-wise.
As some of you doubtless already know, YOUNG JUSTICE was announced today by Cartoon Network.
Here's the official press release info (with slightly better proofreading from me):
"Young Justice: In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and overâ€"to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justiceâ€"Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemisâ€"will find out: whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero? This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers."
We're hard at work on the 26-episode first season. Got a great writing staff in place, and the designs look phenomenal. I really think the series will kick some major ass!
