YJ Production Questions:

1. While Character designs were being made, did you have anything in particular you wanted to happen?
2. If you had to make another YJ show however you were forbidden to use the characters you are know, who would be in?
3. Have the voice actors met one another?
4.When will the pics on the walls at Comic-Con be scanned and online? It isn't really a spoiler anymore seeing as how us fans have spotted everything. Such as Cheshire :)
5. Who will be the characters of the team appearing in ep 1? (Not a spoiler, but a promotional statement now)

Greg responds...

1. I... really don't know what you mean...?

2. I'm happy with the cast we chose.

3. Yes.

4. The walls at Comic-Con?

5. Well, I'll mention those already spoiled: Mr. Freeze, Robin, Batman, Icicle Jr., Speedy, Green Arrow, Killer Frost, Aquaman, Aqualad, Captain Cold, Flash, Kid Flash, Superman, Superboy, Dubbilex, Guardian.

Hello! Can't wait for the premiere of YJ! Just a quick question or too.

I know that you said YJ will be showing the team not only fighting crime, but at school and at home as well. How much of their home lives will we see? Just little bits here and there, or a lot?

Also, it makes sense that miss martain, superboy and robin's gaurdains will know about the super-heroing. will the others parents know? or will it be a secret?

How long are the episodes? I've heard the premiere is an hour long. Will each episode be an hour or is it just longer because it's the premiere?

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer so many questions!

Greg responds...

1. As much as we have room for.

2. They know.

3. The premiere is an hour... i.e. it's our two-part pilot episodes cut together into one "movie". All episodes (including those first two) are a half hour including commercials.

Dear Greg Weisman,

I enjoyed the DC Showcase: Green Arrow short. I wanted to ask a few questions about it.

1) When Oliver Queen is calling Dinah Lance in traffic, the viewer can briefly see his call list -Dinah [Black Canary], Bruce [Batman], Clark [Superman], Wally [Flash], and Mort. Was it your idea to shout out Mort Weisinger, co-creator of Green Arrow?

2) I noticed a lot of green visually (such as in the baggage claim belts) and in dialogue (when Merlyn banters with Green Arrow about having him try to steal the limelight again), well I didn't have a question but just to say I admire that cleverness.

3) Was it intentional to reference Green Arrow's liberal ideology by giving him a hybrid car in the short or was it more to payoff an awesome line of dialogue when Green Arrow appears to save the day?

Greg responds...

1. That must have come from the director or board artist. It wasn't in my script, so you'd have to ask one of them.

2. Thanks. That WAS intentional.

3. Both.

1) Why is Black Canary one of your favorite characters?

2) Which version of Black Canary is your favorite? The one from the old multiverse who moved from Earth-2 to Earth-1 or the new version who is the daughter of the original WW2 Black Canary?

Greg responds...

1. There's no one reason. Her skills. Her personality. Her relationship to Ollie (when it's well-written). Her looks help too, of course. And I tend to favor female characters in general. I tend to find them more interesting to write. Etc.

2. They all work for me.

In the GA short that you wrote, was it deliberate on your part to show Ollie's lack of battle prowlness compared to the likes of Black Canary or Batman when he had so much trouble with the goons hired by Vertigo, had been previously said to be outdrawn by a second rater like Merlyn and was incapacitated by Vertigo. If so what was the reasoning behind it?

Greg responds...

I feel weird answering this, as if I'm defending my work. But your "question" contains so much ill-concealed attitude that I might as well.

Merlyn is hardly a second-rater when it comes to archery. (And it's not like they fought hand-to-hand.) Merlyn TAUGHT Oliver. (There was a flashback to that effect in the original script that got cut for time.) And Vertigo has super-powers that caught Green Arrow off guard. Just as Black Canary catches Vertigo off-guard with HER super-powers. It's not like we see her fight Vertigo or anyone. And Batman's not even IN the short, so I don't know where that comes from. Comparing apples with apples, you don't know HOW either Black Canary or Batman would have done against the "goons" in this short.

Basically, we tried for a more realistic take on hand-to-hand combat in this particular piece. (Which is it's own entity and shouldn't be grouped in with any previous depiction of G.A. or B.C.... let alone Bats.) An injured Green Arrow was fighting a big guy at close quarters, while handicapped by having to protect Perdita. Green Arrow has skills, but he's better at long distance fighting for obvious reasons than close in. So, yeah, I DO think that either Batman or Black Canary would have done a bit better in a similar situation, but that's not meant to imply ANY "lack of battle prowness" on Ollie's part.

I know there are going to be alot of characters in Young Justice and that you won't tell us in detials who will be in it. But I have a question why DC let you have so many choices to pick from. I think you said once that the number of characters you couldn't use you could count on one hand. I have heard stories 0f DC not letting characters being used for some copy right reasons in other shows. So how come you got such a wide of range to choose from?

Greg responds...

I honestly don't know. These are lawyerly decisions made above my pay scale. Why other shows had more or less restrictions than us is beyond me.

According to you announcement, Young Justice premiere will be in November 2010, but the series will began in 2011. Why is that? Why not have the show start in Novemeber instead of just a premiere then having to wait later to see the rest. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking like I'm mad about or anything. It just seems really weird to me to do that.

Greg responds...

You've got it backwards.

The series won't be ready to start in November. So the choice was to SAVE the pilot premiere for 2011 or give you an early shot at seeing it in November. Starting the weekly series in November was NEVER an option.

When in 2011 will YJ start? Will it be like Jan 2011, or like May 2011? Which one are we leaning towards here.

Greg responds...

Here's what I've been told I can say:

"End of November for the one-hour special. Early 2011 for start of the series."

I am one of those fans that doesn't get involved in 'fan' movements or sites, but I really want to see the vol 2 dvd come out. I know many fans are closet fans or, like myself, just don't have time or motivation to act on their love of the show, so I think it would take a lot to get word out. I do have one suggestion/question. If there were a convention of some sort or gathering of fans, I think they should have some sort of 'activity' of writing a letter to disney to release the vol 2 dvd set. People leading the rally would support/walk the fans through the process of writing a letter (providing the right place to send it and a loose outline of what to say) and everyone could send their letter in soon after. If there was that much of a concentrated request from fans to disney about the dvds, then I think it would at least help them to look into it if they got so many letters from fans at once, which may lay the path for more letters later on too and then disney must do SOMETHING. They already have vol 1 out and as long as they think they'd make money (that's the challenge, making them see how it will be profitable), then they wouldn't have much trouble putting it out there. Would something like that be possible?
*Also, for fans, widening the fan base by exposing friends and family to this relatively unknown but vastly epic series is always a good way to take some baby steps.

Greg responds...

Hey Hope,

None of these are particularly original ideas, I'm afraid. The Gathering is over for the foreseeable future, and I can't imagine any of us could put together a letter writing campaign massive enough to budge Disney off their current mindset that the DVDs didn't sell well enough to justify another release.

I don't want to seem negative, however, and as I've said for YEARS now, the best thing the fans can do is SPREAD THE WORD, exposing friends and family to the show and reminding "closet fans" of its existence.
