Hi Greg, just watched Targets and congratulations on taking part in the making of a great show!

1. What do the other students at the school think about Megan and Connor? Do they think they're strange?

2. What is the school called?

3. Will you be showing more scenes within the school?

4. How did Aqualad get to Rhelasia so quickly?

5. How did Superboy know so much about Rhelasia?

6. How does the "stealth tech" work?

Thanks in advance!

Greg responds...

1. They think they're new kids. Opinions vary.

2. Happy Harbor High School.

3. Yes.

4. He didn't go to Rhelasia. The talks were ABOUT North and South Rhelasia, but they were being held in Taipei. And he got there by Zeta-Tube.

5. His G-Gnome education contained plenty of history and current events.

6. Quite well, I think.

In "Leader of the Pack", there was that ship, Otoshiana-maru, and "otoshiana" means "pitfall" or "trap" in Japanese. While watching Targets, I got a kick when Superboy was giving the history of Rhelasia and he talks about the Bokun Dynasty starting in 1855. I realized, "bokun" means "split" or "cleave" in Korean, the ultimate fate of Rhelasia. Do I get a no-prize? I love how you use serendipitous names.

Greg responds...

I'd love to take credit for both, but I can take credit for NEITHER. Michael Reaves, I believe, came up with Otoshiana. Andrew Robinson with Bokun.

I have a couple questions about the team's families. I'm trying to stick to background-y things, but I apologize if they get too spoilery.

1) How would Wally address the Garricks? Jay and Joan, Uncle Jay and Aunt Joan, Mr. Garrick and Mrs. Garrick, Moose and Squirrel...?

2) In the tie-in comic, Dick's narration is that his uncle can't take care of him, and that's why Bruce took him in. Can you elaborate on the specific nature of his uncle's injuries? Is he comatose, mostly paralyzed, something else?

3) The same issue reveals Dick's cousin was named John. In most continuities I'm familiar with, "John Grayson" is the name of Dick's father, and Dick's own middle name is John. Was this cousin named after Dick's father, or does Dick's father have a different name on Earth-16? Can you tell us the names of Dick's parents, aunt, and uncle?

4) How old is Alfred, and did he raise Bruce in Earth-16 continuity?

5) In the tie-in comic, Artemis's parents seemed to have had a once-affectionate, now-distant relationship. Her mother tells her father that he's 'out' if he doesn't change his lifestyle--is she planning to file for divorce, or are they just separating?

6) And... not really a family member to anyone but being their teacher totally counts here: does the Earth-16 Black Canary wear a wig, dye her hair, or is she just a natural blonde?

Thank you for your time, both working on the show and answering inane questions!

Greg responds...

1. I like "Moose and Squirrel" but no, I think Uncle Jay and Aunt Joan are probably more appropriate.

2. NO COMMENT.

3. Dick's father's name was John. His mother was Mary. And, yes, Cousin John was named after Dick's father. Dick's uncle is named Richard - Rick for short. (Dick was named for his own uncle, obviously - the two elder Grayson brothers were very close.) Dick's aunt was named Karla.

4. Alfred is 64. And he was present during Bruce's childhood, but one of his great regrets is that he refrained from parenting Bruce. At the time, he thought it wasn't his place and maintained the distance of a proper English Butler. Now, he believes he made a grave mistake. He's treated/treats Dick VERY differently. And he treats Bruce differently now too.

5. NO COMMENT.

6. A gentleman doesn't tell.

I realize you're still not keen on revealing future plot points for what would have been season three and beyond of "Spectacular Spider-Man." But this question is about the first two seasons, although if the answer ever came, it would have been later. Which I guess places this in a murky gray area. Anyway, because I've been dying to know...

During the two seasons of the show, did Mary Jane Watson know Peter Parker is Spider-Man? In the comics, she knew since the night Uncle Ben died, so I ask if this was the case in "Spectacular Spider-Man" as well. A lot of her behavior towards Peter seems to point towards this.

I just wanted to say that Young Justice is by far the most amazing show ever created. So far everything about it has been absolutely perfect! Thanks you guys for making an epic show! And now to the questions:
1) What is your favorite part of making this show?
2) Does it ever bother you to be compared to Teen Titans?

Greg responds...

1. It's all pretty cool (though I wouldn't mind a less brutal schedule). But it's tough to top our Voice Recording sessions for fun, and our sound mixes for making the whole thing come together.

2. Shrug. All things considered, I don't feel like that's happened overmuch.

Nope. Brandon always wanted him in his classic outfit in the pilot, and the new duds thereafter. (It's just that in episode 3, he's in civvies.)

[Spoilers for Targets but... I hope everyone was tuning in after all this time!]

First, I want to take this moment to say that "Targets" is my favorite episode so far, and how Roy is written (and performed, Crispin Freeman is one of my favorite voice actors) is a big part of that. I love how determined he is to tough it out on his own, yet that he still has enough sense to know that Kaldur can contribute some very impressive skills if he ever has need of them. I think "Targets" is a wonderful showcase of the fact that while Roy is doing a pretty good on his own, he's still connected to the League and the team, and there's a subtle yet powerful display of his respect for Ollie and the League at the end, where he and Kaldur discuss the idea of a mole, yet Roy never mentions the fact that their Johnny-come-lately archer chick is kind of hiding her background.

I'm also really intrigued by the fact that the League of Shadows were involved both times Roy kicked off an episode's plot. So in summary, Roy is fantastic and the way you and the YJ production crew have presented him is also fantastic.

As for questions--

I thought the friendship between Kaldur and Roy was a nice touch, and a nice counterpoint to Dick and Wally's BFFness. They're not as close as Dick and Wally, but they like each other, get along, and complement each other well. It seems that Kaldur is much more successful at bailing Roy out of trouble than he is at preventing Dick and Wally from getting into it in the first place.

What I want to ask is, when the series was being developed, what was the reasoning behind writing them this way? Was it the natural consequence of Dick and Wally's friendship, that the two older sidekicks would be closer to each other as a result, or did everyone just like the way Kaldur's calm played against Roy's... somewhat significantly less calm? Or something else entirely?

It's a very interesting friendship, and I am hopeful of seeing more of it as the series progresses. Thank you to both you and the rest of the team behind Young Justice, because the time everyone's put into the show, from the writing to the plotting to the casting to the performing to the design work to the animation, is absolutely top-notch.

Greg responds...

I think it was mostly an age thing. The two youngest sidekicks gravitated toward each other, and so did the two eldest.

Hello, Mr. Weisman. Thank you for opening the ask a question function. I'll try not to waste your time.
1. In Young Justice #2, when Superman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Wonder Woman, Hawkwoman, Aquaman, and Green Arrow show up, the Joker says "The gangs all here." This seems to imply that, along with the already present Batman, Flash, Hawkman, and Martian Manhunter, these ten characters constituted the League's membership. Since designators 01-07 were taken by the founders and Green Arrow is 08, by process of elimination the Hawkfolk must be 09 and 10. If I'm right, would you please clarify which of them is 09 and which is 10?
2. Also, concerning Young Justice #1 & #2:
a)Were these events set before or after the League "went public."
b)Was Batman the leader yet?
3. In Young Justice #6, Robin's revised origin featured six members of the Flying Graysons, instead of the three I'm used to seeing (four, counting his older brother in Batman Forever, when he's tragically orphaned at the age of thirty). What considerations went into the decision to increase the scope of Dick's tragedy?
4. In Young Justice #7, we see that Artemis put together her own superhero costume. I had previously assumed that it was something new she'd put together after becoming Green Arrow's "niece." Why did her constume suggest the Green Arrow so strongly, since it was before she'd been added to the Team?
5. In Bereft, Batman mentions the League's Charter. Clearly, this Charter, in some way, represents a delegation of power to the League to combat certain threats, but just what does it entail?
a)Does the League operate under the authority of an outside body, or is it autonomous?
b)Where does the League's operating capital come from? I mean, Bruce and Ollie are rich, but they can't pay for everything. Do they receive outside funding, patents on velcro, or t-shirt and toy sales?
c)Does the League's charter include by-laws governing how the League conducts business? Things like electing a leader, inducting new members and other organizational protocol?
6. How far in the League's confidence is Catherine Cobert? Does she know about the Watchtower, for instance?
7. Among the League's founders, on what basis were their numerical designators assigned?
8. Are Hawkwoman and Hawkman married on Earth-16?
9. From a logistics standpoint, who maintains the Hall of Justice and, more importantly, the secret Watchtower?
10. Is Sportsmaster a part of the League of Shadows? He didn't bow to Ra's al Ghul like Cheshire did.

Thank you for your time.

Greg responds...

1. All your assumptions are correct, but the policy is NOT to reveal designations... mostly to preserve the game.

2a. Before.
2b. The leadership rotates. Batman may have been leader a couple times over the League's history.

3. Felt right.

4. She admired him from a distance.

5a. It's autonomous but it has relationships with the United Nations and the U.S. government.
5b. Ollie is not rich. Bruce is. Beyond that, I'm not going into it at this time.
5c. Yes.

6. Yes.

7. The order they showed up to battle the first menace that they fought as a group, before the League had even been formed.

8. Yes.

9. Depends what you mean by "maintain".

10. Not currently. He's got larger responsibilities.

Yeah... this really isn't a great forum for me to write essays, you know?

Hi Greg, first I'd like to say that you are doing a FANTASTIC job with young justice, and I don't say that about every show. But I would like to ask a few questions just clear up my confusion if you don't mind.
1. In young justice, is Hawkwoman the same as hawkgirl? I know that in young justice she's supposed to be hawkwoman, and so if they aren't the same, is it possible that hawkgirl could be a side-kick of hawkwoman? (sorry if it's a spoiler request)
2. When I first saw the Justice League movie, the one where all of the super heroes come together for the first time, Matian Manhunter and stated that he was the last of his kind and he came to Earth to warn everyone about the invaders, who killed his people, that they were coming for Earth. So how is it possible that Miss Martian could be alive, and her sisters that she said she has in episode 6, when the Martian race had been whipped out? (except for Martian Manhunter of course)
3. When you add team members to the team, is it possible for you to be able to make your own character, or does it have to be one that already exists in DC Universe?
4. How come Black Canary doesn't have a side-kick?
Thank you for your time. Sorry if any of these are spoiler alerts.

Greg responds...

1. On Earth-16, there is no Hawkgirl. Only Hawkwoman.

2. Totally different continuity. We're not in continuity with any previous movie or series or comic book - EXCEPT our companion comic book.

3. Anything's possible.

4. Not everyone does.

1.In “Drop Zone”, how and when did Miss Martian plant a bomb in Sportsmaster’s helicopter? Was it actually Robin?
2.In “Denial”, the witch boy claimed that Wally had zero affinity for Magic. How was his body compatible with The Helmet, then? Can you please elaborate on this?
3.In “Targets”, Cheshire was arrested and locked up. She then escaped, forcing Red Arrow to pursue. During this pursuit, Cheshire was seen using weapons. Shouldn’t the police check her person for any weapons before locking her up?
4.Is Superman the only league member who knows Batman’s secret identity?
5.In “Schooled”, why is Superboy wearing a helmet while riding his motorcycle? I thought he was indestructible.

Greg responds...

1. No. Miss Martian did it, while Superboy initially had Sportsmaster's attention.

2. Don't take Klarion, of all "people", too literally.

3. These were provided by Sportsmaster, post-escape.

4. No.

5. He was undercover. And there are helmet laws.

First of all, thank you for making such an entertaining show in the form of Young Justice. I, for one, can’t wait for the new episodes.

I’d also like to thank you for your interpretation of Batman and Robin (they’re very Golden Age but modernized). I like that Dick is a cheerful little dude with an attitude, and that Batman isn’t a jerk to him (a much committed sin of comic writers ever since the Nineties so this really feels like a breath of fresh air).

So here’s my question (I checked the FAQ and Ask Greg with search so I hope I haven’t missed anything): In the DCU Dick Grayson has Romani heritage (his father is Romani). I understand that this is a later expansion on Dick’s circus past and only showed up in full force in later issues of the Nightwing comic, but I was wondering whether YJ!Dick also has Romani heritage. I’ve always been fond of the idea of a iconic character like Robin being partly Romani.

I hope this isn’t a spoiler request! I wouldn’t have asked this but you seemed to have no problem with revealing the information that Artemis Crock is half Vietnamese, so I gave it a try.

Also, I wonder how old Oliver Queen is in Young Justice. Usually he's one of the older Justice League members so I was curious about your interpretation.

Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

2.Is there a reason that Artemis was chosen to be Vietnamese? If there is a reason and it is not a spoiler request, what is the reason?
3.When "worlds finest" asked you why the fans should buy Young Justice #7 you said that Artemis's secrets will be revealed in YJ #7 "AND ONLY IN YOUNG JUSTICE #7!!" so won't they be revealed on the show?
4. How long was Speedy working with Green Arrow before he quit?

1. Uh, sure. Probably trained to be able to use either hand.

2. Her mother is Vietnamese. She and her sister are half-Vietnamese.

Now I'd like to make a few compliments:

1) Concerning YJ: Thank you for not making one of those superhero shows in which the heroes always find the time to slip into their uniforms amidst an attack. So, thanks for the episodes where the Team is in civvies during all the episode.

2) Concerning The Spectacular Spider-Man: Thank you for not making one of those superheroes shows in which the villains pop up out of nowhere and their origin story is explained via a 20 seconds flashback. So, thanks for working their origin into the organic flow of the plot.

3) Concerning The Spectacular Spider-Man, YJ and Gargoyles: Thank you for not making one of those superheroes shows with cheesy dialog and dumbed down lexicon typical of "kiddies cartoons". So, thanks for making animated shows that audiences out of the key demographics can enjoy.

4) Concerning The Spectacular Spider-Man, YJ and Gargoyles: Thank you for making shows with complex and tightly woven plots, instead of a pile of stand alone episodes, making stuff up as you go along. So, thanks for putting an effort into writing plots with a beginning, a middle and an ending... and sometimes another ending (I'm still awed with what you did with the Green Goblin arc).

Thank you very much.

Greg responds...

1. You're welcome!

I interrupt this line of questioning and spoiler requesting for a moment of unabashed fangirling:

I just want to take a moment to say how much I appreciate the way you and your team handle storytelling on Young Justice (really all of your shows, but especially this one). It's obvious to me that to endeavor to tell interesting stories that are also true to reality (as well as any superhero show could, anyway). I just saw episode 10 for the second time (I saw it weeks ago when CN posted it to their site by mistake), and I was struck by how the two story lines of the peace conference in Taipei and Megan and Connor going to school worked out logistically. I'm living in Taiwan right now and I used to live in New York, so I know that time-wise Taiwan and EST time zones are 12 hours apart, so both stories are happening at the same time on different parts of the globe, making that news report Connor and Megan saw in class (loved you as the teacher, I grinned when I recognized your voice--was it your idea, or were you volunteered for the part?) sync up perfectly.

I get so tired of watching films or television shows and reading novels or stories where minimal to zero effort went into fact checking those tiny details when they're really just a question of effort and planning. There are probably more important things to a story, but craftsmanship is in the details and I'm glad that I'm getting that from you on this awesome show.

Some things I liked from the episode:
Mercy's arm - I actually shouted out 'HOLY CRAP MERCY'S ARM WHAT' and my roommate went 'They made her a cyborg! That's so HOT'
Lex Luthor - I always liked that aside from his consuming grudge against Superman, Luthor is sophisticated and immoral but also interesting in his own right. I'm glad that's the version we seem to be getting so far. He's no David Xanatos but I hope he shows up a lot more.
Megan's disguise - her freckles disappeared after she got drenched in water! She was probably just shaken and it slipped her mind. (It couldn't have been an animation mistake--those never happen! :P) She should be more careful, someone might notice.

Also, what icon was that on Marvin's shirt? I didn't recognize what superhero it was from.

Greg responds...

Because of our timestamps, I'm FORCED to do WAY more math than I'm comfortable with. But I agree that those details are important, so I do it.

As for Marvin, that "M" is for Marvin. It's his own icon, loosely based on Superman's.

I like your use of foreign languages in the show and I am curious what the characters are saying since no subtitles are given.

1. What was Megan saying in Martian in Bereft?
2. What were the Bialyan soldiers saying in Arabic in Bereft? (You mentioned it was Arabic in the questions before)
3. What was Aqualad saying in the Atlantean language when he was dehydrated in Bereft?
4. What were the Rhelasian diplomats saying in Targets and what language was it?

Greg responds...

QUESTION 1.

Line #1. MISS MARTIAN (VO)
Katchhhhaa, s’nomoth… K’azzar M’gann? N’da M’arzz…
[Ohh, my head… Where am I? This can’t be Mars…]

Line #2. MISS MARTIAN (VO CONT)
Ah’lunzz… s’sess b’rakahzz… <deep breath> Hw’asheta!
[One moon… white sand… Oxygen!]
(then out loud in English)
Hello, Megan! I’m on Earth!

QUESTION 2.

PATROL LEADER #1 shouts in ARABIC:
25. PATROL LEADER #1
Mat khalee-homshee yih-raboo!
[Don’t let them escape!]

79. PATROL LEADER #2
Sahibit il galala tureadahoo hayan!
[Her Majesty wants him alive!]

82. PATROL LEADER #2
Kifaya! Idrab nar!
[Enough!! Open fire!]

QUESTION 3.

141. AQUALAD
Tula, LIHS-soh-meh… ah-gah-PAH-oh seh…
[Tula, please… I love you…]

174. AQUALAD
<moan> Tula… dih-NA-meh-tha EH-tih ehn Atlantis sim-bih-OH-se…
[Tula… we can still be together in Atlantis…]

QUESTION 4. The language that Tseng and Li were speaking was Rhelasian, which is VERY similar to Korean. The language that Police Captain Xiaping was speaking was Chinese (but I forget which kind):

18. XIAPING
Pa shya! Me gar en pa shya! [Down! Everybody down!] /

21. XIAPING (OS)
Bu yao doung! Don’t move!

36. TSENG, SINGH MANH LI (OVERLAPPING)
<efforts> Jun jah shik, nae gah son, po joo get suh!
[Let me at him!]

162. XIAPING
Zhua tzuh sa so!
[Stop the assassins!]
NOTE: This last was an animation error that we just didn't have time to correct. It was supposed to be Xiaping, so the words were in Chinese. But it was animated as Tseng.

4. How far along pregnant (in months) was Mera in Episode 8?

5. (Joke) Does Megan watch classic TV because reception from Earth to Mars takes a long time?

7. Kaldur quit the Conservatory of Sorcery to become Aqualad but does that mean he's not getting any type of schooling? Or are they done with required Schooling at age 14 when the join the military?

8. Does Black Canary wear a wig in this version or dye her hair blond?

9. Artemis is a Sophomore like Wally, correct?

10. Robin is in 8th or 9th grade?

12. Miss Martian and Superboy are both Juniors correct?

13. Is 'Wolf' an original character or is he based on an established DC character? (I'll understand if this is Spoilers)
