ASK GREG is back, MARCH 3, 2012.

So I've finally gotten through the queue. I could definitely feel myself getting cranky again by the end here, so I'm going to take a short break.

Young Justice resumes airing on Saturday, March 3, 2012, and we'll reopen ASK GREG's question/posting function on the same day.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE follow these simple guidelines BEFORE posting.

1. DO NOT REQUEST SPOILERS!! All requests for spoilers will be met with "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT." Prefacing your spoiler request question by saying, "I hope this doesn't trigger a spoiler alert" or the like doesn't help. THINK BEFORE YOU POST. If you're asking me for information about what is TO COME on a show, it's a SPOILER. And I flat out will not answer. So all you're doing is clogging the queue.

2. CHECK THE ARCHIVES to make sure your question hasn't already been answered. Any question already answered will receive an "ASKED AND ANSWERED" response. Again, this only serves to clog the queue.

3. CHECK the UNANSWERED QUESTION queue before posting your question. I may not have answered it yet, but if you can see that someone's already asked the question, then there's no point in asking it again. All you'll receive is another "ASKED AND ANSWERED" response. Really, the amount of times I was asked Zatanna's age was just preposterous. If I'm taking the time to answer your questions, the least you can do is LOOK to see if your question was already asked before posting and clogging the queue.

4. CONSIDER asking your question from knowledgeable fans BEFORE posting it. For example, the folks at http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/comment/ are very familiar with my work and can usually answer stuff much faster than I can.

5. If you are asking multiple questions in one post, please NUMBER your questions. And if you're asking more than, say... ten... then create a separate post.

6. But please, do NOT flood the queue. Show restraint.

7. Please do not submit any original ideas, notions, concepts, or drawings of original characters. No stories, no fanfic, no teleplays, nothing.

8. No original ideas masquerading as questions. Asking me what Demona did during World War II is fine. Asking me if Demona tried to assassinate Hitler during World War II is an idea masquerading as a question and is not all right. I'm sure you can all see the distinction.

9. No requests for employment. If you want to ask generally about how one might break into the business, I'll try to give my perspective, but this is not an appropriate forum for personal pleas for work.

If these guidelines are followed the results benefit us all:

a. The queue doesn't bog down. I'll get to questions faster.

b. I'll be happier, which means I'm more likely to expand on the questions I can answer, instead of being so fed up that I speed through those too, just to bring down the size of the queue.

I know I must sound like a curmudgeon here. AND THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I AM! (ASK ANYONE!) But you can help reduce my curmudgeonliness by following these guidelines.

Thank you

See you in a week(ish).

I assume you're asking why we CHOSE to make him 13, right?

If so, the short answer is, we liked the contrast between having the youngest be the guy with the most experience.

2. Most cartoons always show characters wearing the same clothes/hairstyle all the time.. is that the case with Young Justice or will there be costume changes? I'd like to see Artemis with her hair down more :)

I feel that most of the characters have gotten an episode to show off their abilities, but we haven't really seen Wally really get a chance to show off his powers. Denial was a Wally oriented episode but it was in a sense more about Doctor Fate then about Kid Flash. Will we get a episode where Wally really gets to show off his abilities?

2.) What is Robin's IQ?

3.) Who is the most intelligent: Wally or Robin?

4.) Who is the tallest: Robin or Zatanna?

I've seen two incidences of 'shyness' and I was wondering if those could be considered facets of the characters personality or just a natural reaction to meeting new people.

5.) Upon meeting the team, Zatanna seemed shy. Would you say that is personality trait of hers?

6.) On her first day of Gotham Academy, Artemis was tugging on her skirt and awkwardly introducing herself - would you say that shy (in social situations) is a personality trait of hers?

Thanks!

Some questions on voice actors:
* You mentioned the guard Wilcox in Terrors was voiced by James Remar. The guards Cooper (the frozen one in Waller's office), Hart ("I have a family") and Hauser (the fat one) also had lines, who did them?
* Not a question: congrats to you, Brandon and Jamie Thomason (and others?) on the casting. It's a diverse cast of character actors, people new to animation, anime voices and cartoon voices. I like most of them (I was hesitant about Brent Spiner, but the more I rewatch it, the more I like it. Still not happy about KMR as John Stewart though)
* When you have "utility voice actors", how do you decide who has which part? In Failsafe, Jeff Bennet and KMR each had three roles (but Nolan North and Khary Payton only one), did you simply ask them "do a gruff general" or "do a hardened marine" and see which the best was? Or do they have better agents?
** How far do you plan these things ahead, for example, did Dee Baker audition for Serifan and Desaad in Disordered, or did you ask him because he already did Wolf (and he's just that good)?
* In Bereft, Roger Craig Smith voices Orm, and per previous answers here, L-5/Ocean Master, a Manta minion and an Atlantean soldier uncredited. Since actors get paid more if they do more than three roles (and you're not going to spend 244 dollars on a one-line soldier), can we take this as evidence Orm and Ocean Master are the same, like in the comics, or will you NO COMMENT your way out of this?
** I realize that, by the time you get to answer this, we'll probably know.

Greg responds...

1. I don't remember.

2. Okay. Thanks?

3. It depends on a number of factors, but the primary one is SEPARATION. An actor has to be able to make a new character (no matter how minor) distinct from the characters he or she is already playing. Of course, it has NOTHING to do with their agents.

4. We don't hold auditions for guest characters.

5. Check out issues #14 and #15 of the comic.

6. Know what?

Hey Greg,

I've got three important questions to ask you. I'm apologize should these questions expose a spoiler alert or break the guidelines.

a. The episode "Homefront" introduced the brief appearances of Bette Kane and Barbara Gordon. In Earth-16, do they already have secret identities? If they do not, do you personally believe that they eventually will?

b. There was a animated television cartoon series I used to watch which lasted from 2004 to 2008 called "The Batman." In the third season of this show (2005), Batgirl(Barbara Gordon) was established as Batman's first (but not official) partner. When the fourth season of the show (2006) started, Robin (Dick Grayson) was introduced (since another cartoon show, Teen Titans, was cancelled) as Batman's second (but official) partner. That show's version of Robin was depicted to be younger than Batgirl. This leads to my question: Since Earth- 16's Barbara Gordon appears to be depicted as older (though we don't know her age) than Earth-16's Dick Grayson, was such a decision (by you and your team) actually inspired from watching "The Batman"?

c. Since we know there is a Barbara Gordon on the show, I'm sure we can easily presume that we will eventually see her adoptive father/biological uncle, Commissioner James Gordon (better known as "Jim" by Batman). This leads to my questions: Will he have any particular role on the show/comic (should he appear)? Any possible idea on what he might look like (Same as the comics or slightly younger?)? Any potential voice actors for his character (Looking forward to it!)?

Thanks for reading my questions. Hope to hear your responses. Keep up the good work on Young Justice! You and your team are doing fantastic!

PS. There is actually one extra multi-part question I need to ask you, and it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Your response to this question means a lot not just to me, but to other fans who may ask or have already asked. Since there was no episode this week (because it was a Thanksgiving holiday), when can we expect to see the last remaining eight episodes of Season One? The reason I am asking is because the last time new episodes appeared it took about six months. Will we have to wait another six months (I hope to God that's not the case!), or will the episodes resume in December? If you (or someone on your team)are able to answer at least this question as soon as possible, I'm sure all the fans of the Young Justice show will get some closure.

Greg responds...

a. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

b. No. And there the same age in our show, so your assumption is incorrect.

c. Jim Gordon is Barbara's father. Period. As to your question: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

d. Episode 119 airs on March 3, 2012 as part of DC NATION.

1) Why did Bruce Wayne decide to adopt Dick Grayson? Was the only reason the fact that it mirrored his own childhood trauma?
2)Did he adopt Dick with the intent of training him as a sidekick, or did Dick find out he was Batman and the idea of a sidekick came after that?
3)What was the reaction of the Gotham public to Bruce Wayne adopting a child?
4)How did the rest of the League react to Robin? GA, Flash and Aquaman eventually got their own protege, but what about the others? Was there anyone who called him out taking a child into battle?

Hello Mr. Weisman,

I have a quick question to ask about Young Justice, but I am worried that it may not be answered in the event that it could cause a spoiler alert, or violate your guidelines. So far, we have seen only Hal Jordan and John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps. Since I noticed that the history of Earth-16 is different when compared to what is normally seen and known in the mainstream universe of the comics (ie. Same characters. like Superboy, but with different chronological appearances and completely original storylines specifically created for the show), in your opinion, will we be possibly be seeing other members of the Green Lantern Corps, as well as the other corps (Sinestro Corps, Red Lantern Corps, Blue Lantern Corps, Indigo Tribe, Star Sapphires, and Agent Orange) anytime soon?

Greg responds...

Well, we've seen Guy Gardner already too.

Everything else you're asking is CLEARLY a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

So your worries were well founded. In fact, I can't help wondering how you could have possibly thought this WOULDN'T be a spoiler request.

It seems to me you blatantly ignored the guidelines. And I just can't figure out why. And not just for you, but for most of the people who have posted here.

Why continue to ask for spoilers, when you all KNOW I'm not going to give them?

Can you all really not help yourselves?

Hello again, this time I wanted to ask a few voice acting questions:

-Is there a story behind your "Father, the rockets aren't working!" bit in the Panda-La episode of Talespin (i.e. how you were tasked with doing it)?

-Do you and your co-producers like Frank, Victor, or Brandon select casting and voice directors, or are there "casting calls" for positions like that? I ask because you've made quite a good partnership with Jamie Thomason on Gargoyles, Spider-Man, and Young Justice.

-How do auditions work for main, supporting, and guest characters respectively? I ask because it seems like you hand-pick past favorites for guest stars like Ed Asner, Brent Spiner, Lacey Chabert, Bill Fagerbakke, etc., and I was curious as to how that differs from the main and supporting audition process.

Thanks again,
Chris Spider

Greg responds...

1. Uh, we had to rerecord a number of lines from that episode, so I helped out. (Not much of a story, I know.)

2. We producers select our directors together. And I've had good working relationships with other Voice Directors, including Ginny McSwain, Andrea Romano, Sue Blue and some guy named Greg Weisman, but I'll admit that since Gargoyles, Jamie's usually my first choice, particularly on this type of show.

3. We tend to audition leads, because our bosses like to weigh in and have options and know that we've chosen the best possible candidate. Plus it helps us discover the character. But there's no time to do that for every character once production gets rolling, so we just talk out casting. I'm obviously going to be familiar with the sounds and skills of folks I've worked with before, and since they're good - and fun to be around - I do recommend folks I've enjoyed working with before. Occasionally, we'll hold a mini-audition or two to cast a character (usually a male or female ingenue) when we don't know exactly who to cast.

Dear Greg, Why is Black Canary voiced by Vanessa Marshal instead of a younger actress like Grey Delisle? And Why is Joker voiced by Brent Spiner? The reason for Mark Hamill retiring as the Joker is because he's getting to old for it, So why pick a man 62 years of age instead of someone younger like John Dimaggio, KMR, or James Patrick Stewart?

Greg responds...

I don't know exactly how old Grey or Vanessa is, but they're both beautiful, talented women about the same age.

I think Grey's wonderful, of course, but for our interpretation of Canary, we felt Vanessa was the right call.

And that's basically the same reasoning behind our choosing Brent. He felt right for our interpretation of the character. Mark Hamill's age (or Brent's for that matter) wasn't even a consideration. I'm a great fan of both John and Kevin's Jokers, but neither seemed right for OUR version of the character.

By the way, I get that you're not thrilled with our choices - and that's certainly your prerogative - but maybe you should reread your post.

Because IT'S DAMN RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS - not to mention filled with incorrect - if not insulting - assumptions!

Hey Greg,

I've got important questions I need ask you about the Young Justice version of Superboy, as well as other Superman-related topics. I apologize in advance if any of your guidelines are broken or if spoiler alerts are triggered.

The first question is a three-parter. How did you determine which powers Superboy were allowed to have during this first season? Why were his remaining powers left out to remain inaccessible to him? With the nature of Superboy starting with fewer powers instead of getting all of his powers at once, was your decision to make this move for the character inspired by watching The CW network show "Smallville"?

The second question is a two-part question about the powers Superboy does not have yet. In your opinion, do you and your team have a basic idea about which order these inaccessible powers will appear? Also, do you also have an idea about the type of situations Superboy has to be in so he will be able to trigger these powers?

The third question is about Superboy's clothing/costume. In your opinion, have you and your team considered the possibility of giving Superboy changes in his costume in future seasons in the show? There is a very specific reason I am asking. Based on what I have seen thus far, my assumption is that your team's character development for Superboy seems to parallel to that of Clark Kent/Superman as interpreted in "Smallville," especially since that show established the strict rule of "No tights, no flight." Can we safely assume that as future seasons of Young Justice go by, Superboy will be undergoing several costume changes similar to that of Clark Kent/Superman of "Smallville"?

The fourth question is about the location Smallville in the Young Justice universe. In the episode, "Failsafe" the location had a brief cameo as part of the mental simulation. In your opinion, will we be able to see the actual Smallville on the show, as well as its well-known residents (the Kents, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, etc)?

The fifth question is about the Fortress of Solitude. The only appearance of the fortress was the front door with the House of El symbol (Was that really a door? There's no keyhole). If the Fortress of Solitude appears again, will we see it in better detail (both inside and outside)? What exactly is the Young Justice version of the Fortress of Solitude based on (from other Superman-related shows to be exact)?

Thank you for taking the time to read my questions. I hope to hear your responses soon!

Greg responds...

1a. We based it on what we believed a super boy could do: enhanced strength, vision, hearing, endurance, etc. But none of Superman's more fantastic powers, such as flight or heat-vision or even X-Ray vision. And no super-cold-breath EVER.

1b. Didn't seem realistic for the way we were interpreting the character.

1c. I can't speak for Brandon, but I'd say we were way more influenced by Superman's original 1938 power level.

2a. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2b. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

3. I'm not all that familiar with Smallville. I only saw a handful of episodes, but I thought Clark just wore normal clothes in that show. I didn't think he had 'costumes'. As to what our Superboy will be wearing: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

4. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

997
Time-Dancing Brooklyn arrives and immediately encounters King Constantine, Maíl Brigti, Gillecomgain and Brother Valmont. He rescues Mary and Finella (and the Grimorum Arcanorum) from villagers, who believe the two women are witches. He gains a sword in the process. Maol Chalvim, Findlaech, Kenneth III (a.k.a. The Grim) and Bodhe discuss how to topple Constantine, perhaps by allying with gargoyles. Constantine and Gillecomgain destroy a cell of gargoyles at Sruighlea, and Demona finds the rubble. (“The Gate”) Brooklyn, Mary and Finella journey to Wyvern but are unable to acquire Goliath’s piece of the Phoenix Gate. Constantine shaves his head. Demona tells her cell of gargoyles, including Second, Sacrifice, Brooksbro, Schnozz, Kermit, True, Chomp and Chaw about the dead Sruighlea gargoyles. Brooklyn, Mary and Finella make contact with Grim, and Brooklyn tracks down Demona to get her help. (“Tyrants”)

Hunter’s Moon, 997
All combatants and their armies converge at Rathveramoen. Valmont takes the Grimorum. (“Tyrants”) Valmont uses the Grimorum to rain arrows from heaven. Sacrifice, Maíl Brigti and the old nag Magus are killed. Demona ends the spell. Brooklyn returns the Grimorum to Finella. Constantine III is killed at age @26 at the Battle of Rathveramoen by the popular Kenneth III (Katharine’s cousin, the son of Duff). The Phoenix returns and Brooklyn, Finella and Mary leave this time period with the Grimorum. (“Phoenix”)

Saturday, January 10th, 1997
Brooklyn is accidentally sent dancing through time by the Phoenix that was inside the Phoenix Gate. (“The Gate”) He returns to the present mere seconds after he departed. But for him, forty years have passed, and he has not come back alone. Brooklyn brings along his mate Katana, their son Nashville, the gargoyle beast Fu-Dog and an unhatched gargoyle egg, nicknamed Egwardo. (“Phoenix”)

Are you able to post the air-dates for the remaining Young Justice episodes, if so what are they?

Also what is the age of Captain Cold?

Lastly, about episode 18, Secrets and the sword of Beowulf, which sword specifically was it? I ask this because as far as I can remember the magical-crafted by giants sword he used to kill Grendel's mother melted away (or something to that effect) and he was left only with the hilt. Then again there is artistic license, but I just wanted to be sure.

1. Episode 119 airs on March 3, 2012 as part of DC NATION. That's all I know for sure, but I'm hopeful they at least finish out the first season on consecutive weeks and then launch right into Season Two.

Hi Greg, big fan of your work, and i think Spectacular Spiderman and Young Justice are some of the finest superhero shows ever made. I have 2 questions regarding the light if you would indulge me. I know if its too spoilerish, that you won't say, and i understand that. Still, any kind of clue that you can give would satisfy me ^^

1) Was the light created by L-1 aka Vandal Savage? If you cant say, could at least say if it was one of member (you don't have to tell me which ^^) that did? Or if it was a coincidence? Or a series of events that lead to their evil unions? To me at least, Savage seems to be in charge, whether officially the leader or not. So i'm thinking he might have recruited the other 6, as they definitively come from such diverse backgrounds and styles. Which by the way, is that what i love about the group. That diversity and the possibilities they have as a team, which i think you showcased very well with the Injustice League too. To quote Count Vertigo: "stunning, what our little teamwork can accomplish."
2) Was the decision to give Vandal Savage his face scars, a nod to your Gargoyle fans (if so, VERY cool), or is there more behind it? A plot twist or maybe just some cool backstory? Either way, it's a nice touch.

Greg responds...

1. I like to think it began with a conversation between old friends Savage and al Ghul. I have no idea what you mean by "a coincidence". Like the seven of them happened to walk into the same super-villain hide-out on the same day?

2. Cave bear. (And, no, it has nothing to do with Gargoyles. It was Phil Bourassa's idea.)

1. I was wondering if Young Justice is going to turn into, for lack of a better word, a love fest. It seems all of the members are getting paired up? (While I'm shipping for a pairing I know you won't make canon, I still find it a bit irritating to see a show about super powered teenagers in love, it's been done before and that's not what I was expecting from the show)

2. I was also wondering if there might be other episodes similar to Downtime but involving other characters? I'd love to explore their backgrounds a bit more.

Greg responds...

1. I can't address your expectations. The show is the show. And the show is about teenagers. And teenagers have a lot of hormones. I'm sorry if that's not your thing, but we feel it's honest.

1. Is Zatanna going to be a part of the team or just a random guest start every once in a while? I'm perfectly fine with her just coming and going as she pleases but just wondering.

2. So Artemis' past is revealed to Green Arrow and Batman and apparently according to the show. Recently it's revealed or "hinted" that Robin knows. How did he find out?

3. I'm super confused with the whole Artemis-Superboy Wally-M'gann and Artemis-Wally thing is confusing. It's obvious Miss Martian and Superboy are dating but apparently not to Wally and Artemis' dismay in the episode "Secret". In the previous few episodes, there have been "elephant in the room" pushes towards Artemis and Wally(Bereft, Revelations, Failsafe and >Disordered< ) . Hey Greg,

I've have some very important questions to ask you about The Young Justice show. I apologize beforehand if any of my questions accidentally expose anything that results in a spoiler alert, or if it seems I accidentally violated any of your guidelines. I also understand that you do not answer everyone's questions. I hope you will be willing to make an exception this time, and read these questions (as mentioned, they are important to me).

a. As everyone knows, Batman is current leader of the Justice League. However, you have mentioned in a response to a previous posting that there have been other members that were voted for leadership before Batman. For some clarification, how times have there been a vote of leadership within the Justice League, which members became leaders, and for how long?

b. As we all know, Batman is doing double-duty, more specifically, his role as leader of the Justice League and his role as supervisor to The Team by deploying them on covert missions. In your honest opinion, if (and when) his leadership duties are eventually transferred to another member of the Justice League, will this affect his other role as The Team's supervisor, or will he still be able to continue this role?

c. In "Downtime," we got to see a rare moment when Bruce Wayne show his more human side (even though it's hard to tell), when he decides to play basketball with Dick Grayson (he called it hand-eye coordination, of all people!!). The way I see it, it seems that Bruce felt he was being unfair (and perhaps, guilty?) to Dick when Bruce wanted to talk to Aqualad alone, and Dick took it the wrong way. In your honest opinion, will we more of Bruce's human side in the show?

d. Ever since he met Superboy, Superman seems to be acting as though he doesn't want to deal with the boy. His behavior, as of late, almost appear to be similar to that of Batman (at least, in my opinion). This leads me to my question: What do you believe Superboy must do in order to earn Superman's attention and, even more so, Superman's respect?

e. The character Supergirl has been(at least, to me, and possibly other fans) a popular, and certainly, interesting character because there has multiple incarnations of her in the mainstream DC universe. Ever the DC relaunch started, everything fans have come to know about the mainstream DC universe was rebooted (some in major ways, and some in minor ways). There is only one Supergirl in the mainstream DC universe now, and that is Kara Zor-El(biological cousin of Superman) herself. With you and your team slowly and carefully manipulating/creating the history of Earth-16, as well as the histories of our favorite DC characters (such as the introduction of Superboy on the show occurring much earlier than what we're used to seeing in the comics), in your honest opinion, has there been an idea among you and your team about considering the addition of Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) into the show? Though I have no intention of trying to make any suggestion to you about how the show should be done (hence your first guideline rule), if such an idea does indeed come to pass (in the near future), I am confident that you and your team can handle the development of her character (in terms of appearance and costume design) very well.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of my questions, and I look forward to reading your responses to them.

PS. All the season one episodes have been very enjoyable thus far. I looking forward to seeing the remaining eight episodes! (I just hope the show doesn't go on another break...)

Greg responds...

a. I haven't tracked this. Length of service is generally a year. Though there are exceptions.

b. That would be up to the new leader.

c. Well, I would think so. But we may define it differently.

d. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

e. You WRITE that you're asking for my opinion whether Supergirl has been considered. But that's not a matter of opinion. It's a fact that either we have or have not. So in essence, you're asking for a spoiler, but trying to sneak it by me by asking for my "opinion". But I'll tell you this. Supergirl was on the list of over fifty teenage heroes that we considered on Day One of developing this show. Whether or not she will eventually appear is a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

Hello, Greg! I love cartoons and I'm loving Young Justice. Very well done, with well-written script and developed. Young Justice, today, for me, is one of the best cartoons there.
I believe you should know about the various speculations about who is the traitor as well as the second season. And my question is about the second season:
- The main characters (Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, Robin, Kid Flash and Artemis) will continue the series? I ask this because I read on various sites, because of the famous "traitor" and also because there is a "teaser" in the Superboy and Aqualad does not appear, assuming they are not part of the second season (mostly Superboy).
- If they all continue (I hope so), there is continuity of the romance between Miss Martian Superboy and will continue (I believe that we can merge into cartoon, fantasy / action / adventure and romance - it is exciting).
- As you already mentioned this first season on the growth of Superboy, we can assume that there is continuity in the growth of the character of Superboy? and Miss Martin?
- You could tell if there will be the development of the problem x Superboy Superman (Acceptance)?

* Of course I would like to do a lot more questions for you about this series, but ... well, I better wait, right?

If I violating any rule, a thousand apologies! It was not my Intent.

I hope that all the characters will continue and that you do not mind me answering these questions (sorry my English, I am Brazilian but as it is not very good. I hope you can understand! Lol).

Hugs and thanks!

Hello, Mr. Weisman,

I've got some questions about Young Justice.

a. I've always believed that in every season of a television show, there is usually a major theme that is explored within the entirety of that season of a show. This brings me to my question: What is the overall theme of the first season of Young Justice?

b. Without exposing any serious spoilers whatsoever, what can you tell us about what we can hope to expect for the remaining 8 episodes of the first season?

c. While I understand that the show focuses on the teenage superheroes, we know little to no information about the pasts of the Justice League members (based on your responses thus far) of Earth-16. Without risking any major spoilers,is there anything else more that you are able to reveal to us? Here are some example questions:

1. Did any of the founding members ever met each other before the they came together to form the Justice League?

2. Aside from the friendship between Batman and Superman (as seen in "Schooled"), were there any close friendships between other the members, and if so, which ones and for how long have they been friends?

3. With little to no information about the members' pasts, and without risking any major spoilers, can we assume the pasts of all the members are the same as they are in the comics (before the DC relaunch), or have they been changed? I ask because I found nothing in previous postings to suggest any changes; perhaps I may not have looked hard enough. However, if there were any changes, and again, without risking any major spoilers, can you please tell us what was changed specifically? (This question, overall, would definitely give many fans some closure, in my opinion, and as I'm sure you may sympathize.)

d. At the end of "Failsafe," Martian Manhunter stated that Miss Martian's telepathy is far more powerful than his own. In your opinion, does that suggest that this is rare in the Martian race? Also, if her telepathy is so powerful, what is the worse you think she can possibly do, (aside from from what happened in that episode)?

e. When can we hope to see more of Superman and the Flash in future episodes? I ask because thus far, their appearances have been short, and we don't hear them speak at all lately. Will we be given the chance to see them in a much bigger role, as from saving people that is?

f. In your opinion, and without spoiling anything, how do you think season one will end?

Thanks for reading. I hope that all my questions will be answered.

Greg responds...

a. Secrets and Lies. Also independence.

b. Without spoilers? No.

c. Probably not.

1. Any? Yes.

2. Plenty. But I'm not going to list them all.

3. No, you cannot assume anything is the same as in the comics - pre or post relaunch. You can't assume anything not in evidence in either the series or our companion comic book. And even some of that stuff is intentionally false information.

3a. Closure? How would this give ANYONE closure? What am I supposed to be sympathizing with exactly? I'm just not understanding this point. Anyway, I'm willing to give an example from the show of where things are different from the original comics: in the comics, Garth became Aqualad. In our series, he passed on that opportunity, and Kaldur became Aqualad.

d. I don't understand this question either? Are you asking if it's rare for any other Martian to be more powerful than J'onn? Beyond that, SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

e. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

f. How do I think it will end? I KNOW how it ends. So how could I answer this without spoilers?

Hey Greg,

I need to ask you some things in regards to the answering of questions by you about Young Justice.

What topics do you usually allow to be answered in regards to when we ask questions about...
a. what we already know about the show thus far?
b. what we don't know about the show thus far (which doesn't risk exposing any spoilers)?
c. topics that require your opinions/educated guesses (again, which doesn't risk exposing any spoilers)?

On a side note, my other question is in regard to the first rule of your guidelines which you stated in your introduction page. Does the rule imply you reject the notion of "giving the fans of the show what they want"? Is it because ideas for the show stated by fans usually conflicts with the ideas for the show that you (and your team) work with and have already planned?

Thanks for taking the time to read these important question that I have for you.

Greg responds...

a, b and c are all fine assuming, as you noted, spoilers are TRULY not involved.

But the best way to figure out what I will and won't answer is to read through the kind of questions I already HAVE answered.

As to your side note, you're completely missing the point.

I won't look at original ideas because they could get me in trouble LEGALLY. It has NOTHING AT ALL to do with giving or not giving fans "what they [think they] want".

BUT... even if this weren't a legal issue, fans need to keep in mind is that by the time they see enough to comment and make suggestions, we've already locked our stories down, and I couldn't alter course to give fans what they want. This would be true whether or not I agreed that any given fan had a great idea. It's just too late.

Although I enjoy nearly every aspect of the show, I've noticed that a particular strength of Young Justice is the incredible voice acting. Do you know if footage will ever be released of the actors recording some of their lines? I think it would be incredibly fun to watch their expressions, movements, et cetera while they voice their different characters. It would be especially amusing to see the expressions on both Jason Spisak and Stephanie Lemelin's faces while recording their individual parts for an argument between Wally and Artemis.

Once again, thank you so much, and amazing job on the show so far!

Hello again, Greg! Had some more questions after watching the latest episode:

-Seeing as "Secrets" was written by Peter David, and dealt with characters introduced in his own Young Justice comic, there's something I've been wondering: How did Peter actually come to write for the show?

-On the same token, was it his idea for Harm to speak almost constantly in the third person until the end?

-Was there any struggle with BS&P over the revelation that Harm killed his sister to gain his powers? I was impressed by how the episode handled it: it's clear, but the script doesn't come right out and say it.

-OK, I have to know whose idea it was to have Miss Martian morph into a demonic Marvin the Martian and then roar like Godzilla. Because that was ridiculously funny.

-Going back a couple episodes, "Failsafe" was probably one of the best episodes from a pure acting standpoint, especially Jason Spisak (his cry of "ARTEMIS!" and then "They're dead! Every last one of them!" were especially gut-wrenching) and Danica McKellar. I realize that's less a question than a compliment, but I'd appreciate it if you passed it on to Jamie and the actors nonetheless.

-Were the costumes for the characters in "Secrets" in the script or hashed out in designs/storyboards?

That's all for now, and I thank you again for putting up with us. Can't wait for more Young Justice!

Thanks,
Chris Spider

1. Peter, I believe, heard about the series and contacted Paul Levitz about the possibility of working on it. Paul, in turn, contacted my boss Sam Register. Sam contacted me and told me Peter was interested in writing on the series, and I contacted Peter.

I was wondering your opinion on the New 52. Not the execution, I have a hunch you don't have the time to read much of any of it, but the idea of it.

Although I have found a few books I really like, in general I object to heaving aside continuity and trying to rejam the history back into a too short time frame while wiping out character development. The idea of accessibility is a red herring because if they were capable of sticking to self contain arc inviting to new readers they wouldn't need a reboot to do so. Then again, I came into comics after Crisis on Infinite Earths and am conditioned into thinking it was necessary.

Greg responds...

As you noted, I have NOT had the time to read the New 52, so I will not comment on that specifically. Whether or not it works creatively depends more than anything else on execution. Since I haven't seen the execution, I can't respond to how it works creatively. But I KNOW that commercially it's been a HUGE hit. I like to believe that it wouldn't have done quite so well, if it wasn't executed well too.

But generally, on the idea of reboots, I do have a handful of thoughts:

1. I don't want to be a hypocrite. When we started Spectacular Spider-Man and again on Young Justice, we were effectively doing a continuity reboot. I feel when adapting something to a new media, that's essential, but it doesn't change the fact that (a) we did it and (b) I was relieved to be able to do it. Relieved to be able to jettison elements that I felt didn't work or were redundant or confusing, etc. Our goal, particularly on Spider-Man, was to come up with something Classic, Cohesive, Coherent, Contemporary and Iconic. So how can I object if the comics themselves want to do this?

2. In the end, whether or not either SpecSpidey or YJ was/is successful depends on our execution of our ideas, additions and cullings. I like to think both shows are successful, but that's a judgement each individual viewer would have to make for him or herself.

3. I was working on staff at DC Comics during the publication of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths. In fact, during my very first editorial meeting, I raised the question as to why we weren't starting ALL our books over (with the numerical exceptions of Detective and Action Comics) with issue #1. I remember very clearly a collective groan rising up from the conference room table. (They had dealt with this question for months before my arrival.) On the one hand, they wanted Crisis to be a real sea-change, a true reboot (before we knew that term). On the other hand, if you truly reboot Batman, then Robin doesn't exist yet. No Robin, no other sidekicks either. So no Teen Titans. And at the time, the New Teen Titans was the company's best selling book.

4. So the end result was that some things got rebooted and some did not.

5. This was complicated by the fact that certain creators came late to the party, and certain characters got reboots too long AFTER Crisis.

6. And so, as a READER, I couldn't help feeling that - rather than simplifying the continuity - Crisis made it more complicated. This will happen in general, naturally, as time passes and more and more comics are produced by a variety of creators and editors, but Crisis seemed to exacerbate the problem for me personally.

7. In part this was because, I really liked the DC Multiverse. I agree that it was abused to the point of confusion. (And I think it was nuts that Earth TWO had the forties heroes and Earth ONE had the sixties heroes. Just the odd backwards numbering itself created additional unnecessary confusion.) But if limits had been placed on the number of parallel earth stories and crossovers, I think it could have been fine.

8. ESPECIALLY, if they had created a new Earth-THREE, starting over with heroes of the eighties, with Superman and Batman (being new to the hero thing but) remaining relatively constant. But with a new Green Lantern (for example) as different from Hal Jordan as Jordan was from Alan Scott.

9. But that didn't happen. And in fact, though I've read very few comics since 1996, my understanding is that reboots have hit over and over at both DC and Marvel. That negates reader trust in the worth and weight of the stories they're reading. It's more insidious than obvious. And you risk alienating old readers, even as you may or may not attract new ones. You'll always get a short term gain off of a reboot, because everyone wants to check it out. But long term...

10. And going back to my first point - which is that most everything depends on execution - I personally didn't love the execution of some of the post-Crisis rebooting. Some people may have loved it. And that's totally legit. But some of the rethinking on certain individual characters didn't work too well for me.

11. Though personally I think the Bates-Weisman-Broderick reboot on Captain Atom from his Charlton incarnation was brilliant. ;)

12. So, personally, my feeling on reboots in general is that you either do them or you don't. You've got to be thorough and ruthless about it, or don't bother, because otherwise - long term - you're creating more problems than you're solving.

13. And still and all, ultimately, it all depends on execution.

Most recent comics....so I see how General Eiling could get into Failsafe through the teams experience. That still leaves the question of Bard, and as someone else caught, Reid.

Secret- didn't blow me away like the other recent episodes...but I don't need to be completely blown away each episode. Few things:
1- Loved Mal showing up in Conner's original comic costume... and Conner not liking it. I've always preferred him in a real costume, though in context of the show it makes sense he doesn't have one. (Also loved Marvin the Martian's 'appearance'.)
2- It's been ages since I've reread the original Young Justice comics, but since Peter David also wrote this ep, I guess some connections can be drawn. The connection I seemed to have missed way back when was that Harm actually loved Gretta. Given how he seemed such a sociopath even in childhood flashback, it never occurred to me he killed his sister because he actually cared for her. (He seemed to harbor no such feelings for their parents.) Very vaguely I now remember a scene in Gretta's swiss cheese memory implying a relationship. It leaves me in the awkward position of wanted to reread the books to refresh my memory and not wanting to as not to confuse the show.
3-I was surprised how negatively Artemas reacted to Conner and M'gan's relationship. I had gotten the impression that she was knowingly pursuing Wally. That said, I like Zatanna picking up on it and her general offer and pushing for talking about the various things Artemas has bottled up.
4-I was also surprised that part of the team, well, excluding Wally, still thought Artemas was really Green Arrow's niece. I figured they all just assumed that the League vouched for her. So did Robin figure it out or did Bruce tell him?
5-The description of M'gann's origin differs gratefully with he own words in the comics. Er...I can't think of a single question that wouldn't qualify as a spoiler request.

Greg responds...

4. Robin figured it out. Batman would not have betrayed Artemis' confidence.

This is a less serious question, but I find myself particularly curious. If Robin and Aqualad hadn't skipped out on the dance to have a meeting with Batman and Red Arrow, what would they have dressed up as?

As a closing note, Secrets was a wonderfully done episode, with many shocking and powerful moments in it(seriously thought the sword was going to kill Harm for a few seconds after it rejected him. Would have been an interesting end, albeit a bit too... gruesome for a kid's show, though the fact that I believed it could happen shows how much you guys take the audience seriously, and I like that)

I also liked the insight into Artemis' character, though it would have been nice for her to open up just a bit... or at least finish that sentence, even if we did know what she was about to say.

Greetings Mr. Weisman,
I want you to know Young Justice is my favorite new show on cartoon network and that I LOVED the episode "Secrets," it was SO CREEPY that I almost forgot I was watching a cartoon (which in alot of ways is better than live action in my opinion lol). Harm was one seriously spooky bad guy, super powers and magic sword aside, what made him truly horrifying was how he came across as a realistic sociopath, a monster you could, god forbid, encounter in real life as opposed to a killer android or alien invader, etc. He wasn't scary because of his powers & magic sword, he was scary because he was a madman who just happened to acquire super powers to go along with his already impressive skills (worse possible scenario for the good guys). What I'd like to ask is...

1) Did Harm's super powers, his crazy strength & invulnerability, come from the Sword of Beowulf along with the lightning bolt attacks or were they powers he already possessed? I only ask because I was confused by the scene where Gretta removed the tattoo mark from over his heart...I know Harm lost control over the sword when Gretta shook his resolve & made him feel guilt, but was the tattoo the physical manifestation of his link to the Sword or was it somekind of magic seal he already had in place to grant him all those other powers?

2) Where did Harm learn his fighting skills? He had to have received training in martial arts and swordsmanship from someone right? Or did he seriously teach himself all those fighting moves? Which, if that is the case, is pretty damn scary in and of itself O_O

3) Where were Harm's and Gretta's folks? Did Harm kill them too or were they orphans?

Greg responds...

1. His super-human abilities came from the Sword. She didn't take his tattoo. You misinterpreted the action.

2. He's mostly self-taught... through fighting others.

3. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

Hey Greg,

I've got a curious questions to ask you.

a. Young Justice is classified as Earth-16 in the DC multiverse, although there had been contradictory information about this version of Earth prior to the announcement that the show would take place here. The first contraction claims that Earth-16 was the home of the Super-Sons (Superman Jr. and Batman Jr.) as indicated by early material such as DC Nation Issue #89. The second contradiction, which ruled out the Super-Sons continuity, claims that an alternate version of Superman (who was called Christopher Kent) was a native to this universe, as indicated by "Countdown: Arena" (This was a four-issue comic book series). This leads me to my question: When you decided you use Earth-16 for your show, did you (and your team) noticed these contradictions before when working on your ideas for the show, and did you set up some kind of story-wise explanation as to how these contradictions were removed?

b. At the end of "Schooled," Professor Ivo managed to evade The Team. However, in "Terrors," he somehow winds up in Belle Reve. Will this somehow be explained in a later episode of the show or in a future comic issue?

c. Miss Martian, as with all other Martians, are vulnerable to fire. However, in "Revelation," after Robin destroys the Ivy's plant transmitter, she was shown next to Robin and small flames were around them from the destruction of the transmitter. Interestingly, she was not shown to be vulnerable at that time. Was that some kind of mistake?

Thanks for reading.

Greg responds...

a. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

b. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

c. The flames weren't that close and/or weren't giving off that much heat.

But she doesn't live in Star City. She lives in Gotham City. It's where she was brought up and where she lives. It's where her mother lives. Just because it would be convenient for Green Arrow, doesn't make it so.

Without spoiling any names, can you please tell how many villains there are from each character's Rouges' Gallery (For example: Batman -## villains)? I don't believe numbers count as spoilers because technically you're not naming anybody, and giving the numbers allows fans to think about the possible candidates, since not every villain will show up on the show, right?

Thanks! Looking forward to the next episode!

Greg responds...

No. Just no. Aside from the fact, that this is a de facto spoiler, no matter how you spin it, it's also a massive pain to compile. (And that's aside from the fact that some villains could easily be listed under more than one hero. For example, Kingpin is both a Spider-Man and a Daredevil villain.)

Once the season ends - YOU CAN DO IT!

Hey Greg,
Hey Mr. Weisman,

I've got some quick questions about Young Justice. If these questions accidentally expose a potential spoiler, I sincerely apologize.

a. In regards to Wolf's tears and exposed muscles (as a result of being exposed to Kobra Venom), will they eventually heal overtime, or is the damage permanent?

b. In "Failsafe" Superboy expressed shock, and perhaps interest, when he learns about Superman's Fortress of Solitude. In your opinion, do you believe that he will ever get the opportunity to visit it?

c. In the same above mentioned episode, why is Superman wearing a oxygen mask? I could have sworn that recent comics (prior to the DC relaunch) show he was able to breathe in space. With that in mind, what version of the comics is the Young Justice version of Superman based on? (Golden Age? Silver Age?)

d. I understood that the first new series regular was introduced into The Team about halfway through the season (Isn't that about episode 13 or so?), but who is it exactly? If it was Wolf or Sphere, I apologize for not taking either of them into account.

e. Without needing to spoil any identities whatsoever, and in your opinion, what is the maximum number of members of The Team you are trying to aim for? To be more specific, how many males and females are there going to be?

f. The costumes of the characters portrayed thus far seems to appear to be just like those worn by characters prior to DC relaunch. In your opinion, do you think we will be able see any costumes based on those worn by characters since the start of the DC relaunch?

Thanks, and keep those episodes coming!!

Greg responds...

a. You're assuming it's damage.

b. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

c. Superman of Earth-16 cannot breathe in the vacuum of space. No one can. Some entities may not require oxygen to live. Superman does.

c2. He's not 'based' on any single version of anything.

d. Sphere was introduced in episode 109. Wolf in episode 113. What exactly are you asking? Through episode 118, we still only have the original six regulars on the series.

e. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

f. All our character costumes are art directed by Brandon Vietti and redesigned/reconceived by Phil Bourassa based on the needs/tone/etc. of our series with a mind to what is iconic about any individual character's look. That won't change.

Dear Greg;
Secrets is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE EPISODE of the series!!!! You guys accurately got Harm & Secret down perfectly! Secret was my favorite character of the original series, and you got her so right! And Harm, wow. Very good job, I hope he'll get more screen time in the future. The only thing that makes me sad about Secret's appearance is that the way she was done lends her to being a one-shot character. And I was really hoping to see more of her in the series. I'd ask if she'll show up, but I know the answers I get will be A-Spoiler Request or B-It's a secret.

Back to praise; Loved the interation between Zatanna and Artemis, very nicely done. The store "Abel's House of Secrets"? Awesome nod to Cain & Abel, thank you! Also loved the party and Mal's costume being "Superman. Done right." Oh, and M'Gann turning into Marvin. Now, a question; Was the sword of Beowulf a previously existing idea? Or original to the show? Cause I also liked the twist with the "pure of heart" thing, very reminiscent of the loopholes in Gargoyles magic.

Anyway, keep up the good work. And again, thank you for using my favorite character from the original series!

I seem to recall the Sword of Beowulf being Peter David's addition. You'd have to ask him if it was from a pre-existing story.

Hello Mr. Weisman,

a. Are all his vehicles based on military technology?

b. Considering all his vehicles have "Bat-" in their names, is the vehicle he used in "Revelation" a Batwing or some kind of Batjet?

c. Considering it was used in the simulation, does the vehicle he used in space in the episode "Failsafe" actually existed (meaning in the "real" world after Miss Martian was the last one to wake up). What kind of vehicle was that, a Batshuttle spacecraft?

d. Will be seeing Batman's Batmobile in action any time soon? Considering its various appearances on multiple Batman-related shows and movies, what will it look like: a bat-like car or a tank-like miltary car? (I'm rooting for the tank!!)

Hey Greg,

I have questions about The Light, the main antagonists of season 1 of Young Justice. I have to say that the way you carefully set up their appearances from starting off as shadowy at the end of episode 2 to finally appearing in the flesh at the end of episode 14 was extremely clever. I have to admit that I thought the Injustice League themselves were the real bad guys that had their voices distorted when talking with their associates (like Sportsmaster and the Sensei, for example) and that "The Light" was just a cover name for the Injustice League, until the time was right to reveal themselves. When I saw the real members of The Light, I was surprised (probably just as much as anyone else you saw episode 14) because I thought some of those guys were just allies and not actual members, though I'm sure other fans of the show figured it out more or less.

This brings me to my questions:

a. Will there be a storywise explanation as to what exactly lead to the creation of this super-villain group in the first place?

b. What motivated you to create this unique and original super-villain group? Was it because you wanted to avoid using typical super-villain group names such as Legion of Doom?

c. Why were these people specifically chosen to be members of "The Light," and not anyone else? Were you looking for something specific in each of these members, something that stands out?

d. What exactly is their big plan(or is it more appropriately called their endgame?) and how are all of their activities(such as the attempt to steal the Helmet of Fate and the failed attempt to obtain Starro)thus far connected to this plan?

e. The episode "Infiltrator" suggests they had a hand in inserting a mole into The Team. However, The Team itself believe this to be nothing more than a mind game based on Sportsmaster's tip. Five out of six members of The Team (based on their actions on the field in every episode thus far) appear to be clean. Artemis seems to be the only one who hasn't come clean yet with her secrets, perhaps due to fear she may be hated, perhaps? Even so, her secrets about her family wouldn't prove life-threatening to either the Team or the Justice League, would they? The existence of the mole, in my opinion, is in doubt. Is this mole even real to begin with, and if so, is that person is somehow being unknowingly manipulated by The Light somehow?

f. Depending on what The Light may do (endangering the world, no matter what actions they take), will the lives of both the Team and the Justice League, and even the lives of those closest to them be in any sort of danger?

Thanks for taking the time to read all my questions.

Greg responds...

a. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

b. I suppose. But mostly, it seemed in character.

c. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

d. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

e. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2. Do you know which martial arts Sportmaster know.
3. Did Aqualad kill that Kobra member or did he just paralyze him?
4. I don't know if you've been reading, but I'm sure you've heard of Darksied's makeover, courtesy of Jim Lee, by angry fans in DCnU. I honestly don't mind but Kirby's design is of course legend. Even in past events when artists drew him the they kept Kirby classic. I think Kirby's design was better for him showing his personality dark and uncaring. All Jim did was really give him armor. I like to agree with the negatives. The armor is... to "colorful." unlike other supervillians ,mostly Marvel including Apocalypse, Galactus, and Thanos; Darksied doesn't need armor to be widely feared by all, but I know that with time comes change. Can you please share your opinion on this?
Thanks for answering all of our questions, Greg.

Secrets

I am speechless. This episode was perfect. I loved it, and I say this as a guy who has been wanting to love this series but so far has only been able to just like it a lot. I loved this episode.

Harm was a deliciously creepy villain. Everything about him was chilling. His speech patterns could have easily been corny, but thanks to great writing and terrific voice acting they were very unnerving. I spent most of the episode wondering how Artemis and Zatanna were going to defeat him. Scratch that, not just wondering how they were, wondering IF they were. And as a thirty-year old jaded TV watcher, I hardly ever wonder IF the bad guy is going to be beaten.

The story was very heavy, and the truth about Secret was heartbreaking. I've heard of Secret and Harm before, but I didn't know their story, and I had no idea she was dead, never mind that her brother killed her. Child murder in a cartoon? Okay, there's been plenty of attempted child murder, but the real deal? Harsh. Very harsh.

The B-plot balanced out the dark drama with a lot of humor. While Artemis and Zatanna fought for their lives, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Kid Flash were attending a school Halloween dance and there they warded off... a prank. I would like to say that Marvin the Martian with Godzilla's roar is the single greatest thing a human being could ever have come up with.

Martians invading, eh? Ooh... foreshadowing for season two? And here I thought Darkseid was being set up for season two. Hmm, maybe he is. Maybe he'll be in cahoots with the White Martians. Maybe I am reading too deep into this. It wouldn't be the first time.

The brief C-plot was about Aqualad, Red Arrow, Robin, and Batman discussing who the traitor was. At this point, I have no idea. I'm leaning towards M'Gann. Or maybe it's Aqualad.

If I had one complaint, it was about Artemis taking the news that Superboy and Miss Martian are a couple that hard. She only expressed interest in him on screen once, and that was in her first appearance. Aqualad alluded to it a few episodes back, but I think we needed more. Artemis, aggressive as she is, could have flirted with Superboy more. But that doesn't detract from this perfect episode, because it's not this episode's problem. The episodes that preceded this one should have laid a little more pipe.

BTW, Marvel Zombie... very cute.

A+, Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, Encore! Encore!

Greg responds...

I take great pride in the notion of using the Godzilla roar with Miss Martian posing as Marvin the Martian to scare Marvin from SuperFriends. That was my idea!

"Secrets" intrigued me. I'm really glad we got to see more Zatanna - her YJ incarnation is the best I've ever seen. Is she an official member of the team yet?

As an intriguing episode should, this one prompted a few (more) questions:

1. Zatanna has an "A" authorization code, unlike the Team's "B" classifications and League's pure numbers. Can you explain what the difference is between "A" and "B" designations? What they represent?

2. Where does Zatanna live? (And, if it's "with G. Zatara, where is that?)

3. I'm really interested in how magic works in the Earth-16 universe (and specifically on Earth). We've seen Nabu and Klarion, magical beings from other planes of existence who assert their influence on Earth (and really, why Earth of all worlds?); we've seen Wotan, whose design evokes a wizard vampire, and who casts his incantations in Latin; and we've seen the Zataras, who speak backwards in English to use their magic.
And then there's the sword of Beowulf, unleashed from its scabbard by an incantation in Olde English.
So:
a) Just restating the point above: Lords of Order and Chaos choose to manifest on Earth. Is it only Earth (and, if so, why?), or are there Lords of Choas and Order who choose to duke it out over other worlds?
b) I've noticed that all magical energy used so far is yellow (Fate, Wotan, Zatara) - with the blatant exception of Klarion's red magic. Does this have any significance, and, if so, what is it?
c) Can anyone who has an affinity for magic (and what does that mean? Kent Nelson said something to that effect about Madame Xanadu) learn magic? What is the source (or sources) of magic, when used by beings who are not inherently mystical (i.e. not Lords of Chaos/Order)?
d) How do the sword and scabbard of Beowulf have magical power?
e) How well-known is the existence of magic among the general populace of Earth? Is it an accepted academic fact - and, if not, how do people explain Zatara's powers?

4. This episode suggests that the public has some awareness not only of the existence of *one* Martian (i.e. Manhunter), but of the entire Martian nation (since the response to a supposed Martian invasion is not "OMG Martians," but seems more like "Shoot, war with Mars"). How exactly is the public aware of the Martian civilization? How aware are the governments of the Martian civilization, and are there any kinds of diplomatic relations/trade?
If people are not aware, how is this possible with a Martian as a public hero?

5. Ghosts. We've seen Kent Nelson's soul, bonded with the helmet for a few thousand years, and "Secret," the ghost of Harm's dead sister. When do departed souls manifest as ghosts in the world, and why? How much power do they have?

Thank you so much, for all your considerate attention. The numbers here are meant to serve as "headings" for similarly-themed questions, so there are actually quite a lot in here; again, thanks for your consideration.

Greg responds...

0. No.

1. A is for Authorized Guests of the League. B is for Team members. The A designation pre-dates the creation of the Team.

2. With Zatara in New York.

3a. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

3b. I don't know.

3c. I think Zatanna described it best in "Humanity". I don't have much to add.

3d. They were infused at their creation.

3e. Folks know about Zatara. Whether they attribute his abilities to 'magic' or to something akin to what Kid Flash was describing in "Denial" is up to the individual.

4. Thanks to Martian Manhunter there is some (minimal) awareness that Mars is inhabited. There isn't any diplomatic or trade relations between the planets at this time. No communication either.

5. It's not so different from traditional ghost traditions. Greta was not "At rest". Most folks who die pass on. But a few do not. "Power" depends on circumstances.

Loved 'Secrets'!

1.) What color are Greta Hayes' eyes?

2.) I've had some difficulty grasping Zatanna's personality, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to describe her. Not some detailed analysis or anything - just a handful of adjectives innate to Zatanna's incarnation in Earth-16. (Ex. Kid Flash: Class Clown, Immature, Goofy, Impulsive, Flirty, etc.)

Thanks so much!

Greg responds...

1. Pale green.

2. If I had to pick one word: mischievous. But she is who she is. She's many things. Honest, direct, flirty, devlish, loyal, etc. Frankly, this whole question makes me uncomfortable. The material should stand on its own, and if it doesn't then I don't know how me listing qualities here is going to help.

Hey Greg,

"Secrets" was quite an interesting episode to say the least, specifically the conversation concerning the possibility of a mole on The Team.

Based on what Red Arrow said, he instantly ruled out his friends (Aqualad, Robin, and Kid Flash)as potential traitors since he's known them the longest. This left us with three possible candidates: Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis. I have questions regarding these three people.

First, there's Superboy. In "Fireworks," when Superboy met the Justice League, I'm guessing he told them everything about himself offscreen; that's also assuming he told them what the purpose of his creation was, right? (Since his purpose was to replace Superman if he dies, or kill Superman if he turned evil) In this episode, Batman thinks that Cadmus programmed something specific into Superboy, and suspects that Superboy could be the mole without being aware of it. What does that mean? Is Superboy at risk of being mind-controlled or is it something more?

Second, there's Miss Martian. According to Red Arrow, Martian Manhunter told Black Canary he had a few hundred nieces and nephews. I don't remember that being that being mentioned in the comics, so is this fact true or false on the show? I'll be surprised he has a large family if this fact turns out to be true. Red Arrow claimed that Miss Martian met her uncle for the first time 5 months prior to this episode when she stowed away on his last trip from Mars to Earth. (Storywise, that's June, isn't it?) If that is true, why would she do that? Given her personality, I personally doubt she is the mole, but will there be a reasonable explanation for her coming to Earth in a future episode?

Lastly, there's Artemis. Red Arrow knew right off the bat that she wasn't the niece of Green Arrow, and he even told Aqualad and Robin in this episode. Batman defended Artemis' status, which I'm not surprised at. I know the comic kind of explained what he knows, but did Batman really connected the dots and knows Sportsmaster is Atermis' father and is just not saying anything to let Artemis tell The Team on her own terms?
In terms with how Artemis has been acting, she's been really protective about her family secrets, since she still refuses to open up, even to Zatanna. Will her constant unwilliingness to come clean get her into serious trouble in the remaining episodes of this season?

Thanks for reading my questions.

Greg responds...

1. Batman thinks it's a POSSIBILITY that Cadmus programmed more into Superboy than even Superboy is aware of. Beyond that, SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2a. It's true.

2b. June, yes.

2c. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2d. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

Hey Greg, sorry if this seems like a silly question, but I was under the impression that the Young Justice episodes were written by different members of the production staff. So I was just wondering if that ever becomes annoying or frustrating not having creative control over the details of an episode, or if it makes it more interesting for everyone involved. Or if you all work as a unit to piece it all together. I'm really not sure of how everything is set up but I was just so curious about the effort and work that goes into the show. I'm sure you get this a lot but thank you so much for being a part of this show and making it all happen. I look forward to new episodes all week long.I really love it! Thanks again, and sorry if this question seems impertinent.

Did you based Harm's constant use of the word "harm" on Mr Freeze's "ice puns" from the infamous 1997 George Clooney Batman & Robin movie?

Hey Greg,

In the Young Justice episode "Revelation," when the plant creatures attacked the bridge in Star City, they were also attacking what appears to be a Metropolis school bus. Inside the bus, only the students and the bus driver himself were seen. Was that some kind of mistake? Was that supposed to be a Star City school bus instead? If was meant to be a Metropolis school bus, I can assume there was some kind of field trip involved, but if that were true, then where is the teacher?

Thank you for reading the question.

Greg responds...

This, for once, was NOT a mistake.

On one level, it's an in joke. That Metropolis school bus gets around. And it always has the same students and bus driver, and it's always getting in trouble on a bridge. (See episode 105 for its first appearance.) Keep an eye out for it. It'll be back.

On another level, it was a field trip. And the teacher IS the bus driver.

In Issue 10 of the YJ comic, why was Megan's skin green when in the diner? Wouldn't she have changed it to caucasian? And why didn't the other two men say anything or react to it?

Greg responds...

That's what's called in the business: "A tragically stupid mistake!"

How we all missed that is beyond me. Seriously. I was so embarrassed when I saw it in print. I went back to my color proofs, positive that she was caucasian in them and that some helpful soul had 'corrected' her to green after the fact. But nope. She was green. And none of us noticed until it was too late.

If you need an in universe explanation, I think she forgot to change to caucasian, and her friends were so used to seeing her green that they didn't notice until it was too late. (Sound familiar.) Then you got to figure that Bibbo and Perry DID notice when they entered, but figured she was wearing full-body make-up. They probably commented on it when the kids first entered, but by the time we joined the action, Bibbo had moved on to comment about their cellphone use.

Yeah. That's the ticket!

Hello, Mr. Weisman,

I have a question in regards to what kind of clone Superboy is.

In the comics, Superboy is Superman's clone mixed with Lex's DNA to stabilize him.

In "Smallville," Connor Kent is a Lex clone mixed with Clark's DNA to stop his accelerated mitosis.

In the show, all that is explained is that Superboy was cloned from Superman's DNA, and nothing else was revealed.

The question that comes to mind is whether the Superboy of the Young Justice continuity is a Human-Kryptonian Hybrid clone, or a 100% Kryptonian clone?

Will we find out how Superman's DNA was acquired to be used to create Superboy in the remaining episodes of this season, or will this be a story for later in future seasons?

Hey Greg (is it okay to call you by first name?),

I'm puzzled as to why some of the superheroes of the Justice League do not have any voice actors yet? Is it really hard to find the right kind of people to do voice acting for certain characters?

Thanks for reading my question.

Greg responds...

Yes, please. Call me "Greg." Just don't call me late for din--

No, I'm not going there.

<ahem>

Some characters don't have voice actors yet simply because they haven't had any lines of dialogue yet. Voice actors are wonderful, but they are an expense, and we can't afford to give characters lines - and thus hire another actor - just for the fun of it. Plus there's only so much screen time in any given episode. Thus if a character doesn't have anything salient to say, he or she is not going to speak.

Two questions about the comic #10 - a lovely twist on the old series, by the way:
* Captain Atom can revert to a human form. Since "Nathaniel Adams" has been dead for 43 years, does he use another alias (Cameron Scott?).
* Cap is technically 71, but had (through some NO COMMENT event) in 1968. Does he age, or is "Cameron Scott" 28 for the rest of his life?
* The issue mentions "to be continued" at the end, but the solicits for the upcoming issues (#11-#13) make no reference to this storyline. Will this be dealt with in the comics after #14 or in the TV series? I can understand if this is NO COMMENT territory, just curious.

Greg responds...

1. Candidly, yes. Though nothing is canon until or unless it's established in the show or the comic.

2. Captain Atom is chronologically 70 in the year that the series is set. Whether or not he ages, is as yet unclear. He hasn't been back long enough to be sure.

I'm sorry if this comes across as too harsh; it isn't my intent. My question is about the tie-in comics. I'm a bit concerned with Artemis' portrayal--namely, the fact that she's usually colored with blue eyes and much more "peaches and cream" skin tone than she has on the show. I know it probably won't be possible for already completed issues, but is there any chance of correcting this in the future? As much as I enjoy the comic and want to support the show, I'm not comfortable with what could be misconstrued as whitewashing one of the few Asian superheroes. I don't believe there's any real intent to do that, since the colorist has probably never watched the show and just assumed that the blonde girl would be a blue-eyed Caucasian, but it's a bit distracting and it's beginning to impair my enjoyment of the book.

Again, I don't want this to sound accusatory, and I have a great deal of respect for everyone who works on the show. I'm just a bit dismayed by this, because a lot of fans don't seem to realize that Artemis is half-Vietnamese: the vast majority of fanart also gives her blue eyes and Caucasian skin tone and facial features.

Thanks again for reading this, and I look forward to all future installments of Young Justice. :)

Greg responds...

We are in fact making an effort to correct this. I'll take the blame for this. I review all color, but I sometimes do it on a relatively small screen and the eye-color errors slipped past me. But please know that no one was ever trying to 'white-wash' the character. Mistakes do happen, but there was no 'intent' behind them. They're just mistakes. Apologies.

Me again,

I separated this question from my Failsafe comments in case it got booted.

M'gann drew some characters into scenes I couldn't quite pick from other minds in the rooms. I guess it is possible that someone knew General Ealing, but Jason Bard and his leg injury? (How much older is he than Bab's? Oh well, would have been fun to see Dick and he interact.) Do M'gann's powers even stray into the precognitive side a bit? (perhaps in conjuncture with other artifacts in the building?) Or is there another reason that can explain the detail of her dream sequence?

Greg responds...

M'gann is not precognitive. Jason Bard is considerably older than Barbara, and is an acquaintance/friend of John Jones, who knows that Jason injured his leg in combat back when he was a U.S. Marine.

Laura 'ad astra' Sack writes...

Here I am- falling behind again. A few comments on the last few episodes, all of which I enjoyed. Unfortunaetly the memory for specifics is getting a bit dim as I go back....

Revelations-
In general I liked the episode. The superhero cameos made me nerd happy, and like in Terrors, it showed what was meant by using the group behind the scenes. (I was freeze framing to name all the superheroes. I had to go back and forth several times till I figured out it was Rocket. Then I let it play and saw Icon 5 seconds later. Serves me right for not having the patience to let a scene play out before going all nerd on it.)

1- Are Rocket and Icon based in Dakota City on Earth 16? (And if so, which state is that in?)
2- Asking about Lian Harper's existence, while tempting, is a little silly because it Roy and Cheshire have just met. But Rocket/Raquel was (though unaware) pregnant with Amistad in her first appearance. Does she have child on Earth 16?
3- Which brings to mind a side question- which superheroes have experience with kids? Batman has had Dick for a while. Zatara is obviously a father. J'onn is an uncle if not necessarily a father in this universe. But how many of others have a clue with kids? Roy's been with Ollie a while, but he's already the oldest of the group.
4- I seem to be in a distinct minority of people who do not hate Guy Gardner's traditional costume, but I thought the redesign for the cameo was clever.
5- Barely noticed one of the three firemen who collapsed when the Joker toxin was released was a woman. Thank you for keeping her uniform bulky and form hiding so it wasn't a magically tailored female uniform of the sorts we often see on tv.
6- Artimas and Wally's relationship continues to develop nicely.
7- Robin and Aqualad recognizing the couples was very amusing.
8- M'gann called her ship "She" and it didn't sound like the generic - ships/cars get called she way. Is it sentient?
9- I've noticed M’gann never wears a seatbelt in her ship. Everyone else does. Is it unnecessary as a by product of her psychic link to the ship that she is somehow held in place and never surprised? Is she joined to it?
10- Light revelation - clever.

Humanity-
I already asked some separate questions about Reddy's family. So I won't repeat those, but I was generally happy.
1- My closed captioning pegged the Zatarra/Zatanna spell casting as Latin:) Though I must say, speaking backwards is actually far less cheesy on screen than on paper.
2- Okay... I can't remember is I asked this in my Red Tornado family question- but was there any memorial for his brother and sister either public or private?
3- It's odd for me to think of Zatanna as something other than Batman’s contemporary. That said, I did read Zatanna’a Search, so I understand she was first introduced as a teen.
4- Funny as it was, Artimas's "Naked, not in a good way" quip about not having her arrows was a little jarring. It seemed a little open for a 15-6 year old who is keeping secrets. Then again, I'm a prude.

Failsafe-
Really liked this one. The trick to any imaginary episode is letting there be a reason for what happens and why it is important. The idea that a emotional reaction to a pretend death overwhelms a psychic link and turns it into a high stakes 'reality' is elegant. The emotional ramifications make it anything but a return to status quo at the end. And the revelation about M'gann's powers is good plotting.

1- I'm going to say again that I believe the mole is unaware of being a mole. M'gann was so far into everyone’s head it would have leaked through if someone was knowingly betraying them.
2- Seeing Iris and Barry interact during the new broadcast was nicely done (as was the anchor's reaction to Iris's on screen death). There were a lot of well done pieces like that in the episode. It does raise a bunch of questions, some I can suppose answers to...
a- Given the power of M'gann's mind I presume it is possible that she unconsciously had access to information that went into that scenario- for example there is no particular reason she would know the reporter and Flash were married, but J'onn and Wally do, so that was in the scene. Is that what happened and if not, how did that get in?
b- Also presuming she got Alfred, Babs and Bette's faces from Dick's mind, would it be fair to read into the lack of costumes that Babs and Bette have yet to don capes? (Actually asking that would be an obvious spoiler- I'm asking if it is a fair interpretation, not necessarily the one you are depicting.)
c- Even with taking images from the heads of the other participants, how would Eeling and Bard end into the scenario? Or...wait, I'll ask the next part of this question in a separate post.
d- How did, or will, Jason Bard wreck his knee in earth16?
3. The masks the superheroes used in space- where they for breathing or simply to allow or talking? (I was surprised they didn't include the eyes. Even if they can manage bare in space for a period of time, I gotta think they come home with wicked dry eye.
4. Was the 48 star flag a throwback to when M'gann first started watching earth tv?
5. Loved Artimas elbowing Wally after every stupid alien line. Then having Wally react to her death....
6. Robins speech and the next wave of teen heroes gathering was stirringly done.

Disordered-
Another great one- Failsafe may have been a dream, but the ramifications are real.
1- WhooHoo! Called the Supercycle. (Though I suppose MightyNDowd won't be showing in the series.)
2- It looked like we were going to get a 'heroes fight over a misunderstanding' scene but don't- like that.
3- Does Black Canary have any therapeutic training? As far as I recall she is a florist in her civilian life. If she doesn't have training, why was she one doing the sessions? (Not that she didn't seem very good at it.)
4- Odd that it didn't occur to me that whole League (or at least those working with the teens) would know Artimas's background until Black Canary brought it up. (Though it's not necessarily so considering that Dina is part of the Green Arrow family.)
5- Nice revelations on leadership from Aqualad and Robin. Not so much surprising as well stated and acknowledged.
6- M'gann's reaction to turning 'white' clearly means there is some connection to her White Martian status in the comics. I await to see exactly what kind. (Loved Dinah's comment about trying not to speak in 1rst grade.)
7- Wally being 'comfortable with denial' was fun. Not the unhealthiest way to approach life or at least the trauma he just faced. He'll have to deal with his feeling for Artimas trauma or none eventually, but to knowingly leave the rest aside might be better than dealing with it minutely.
8- Superboy's revelation managed to shock Dinah, though she quickly covered. There are so many ways to go from it- and many are equally valid if not equally healthy choices for him. He was after all designed to replace Superman should the need arise- that is programmed into him as his main purpose and serving a purpose is a very basic human need. Of course he may just see himself as selfish and soulless...a less healthy answer. Then there are answers of a less psychological nature- like Lex Luthor genes, and lingering programming from Cadmus/the Light. It's nice when someone has a valid reason to be potentially emo as opposed to general angst.

thanks.

MIght I make a request: in the future, could you NOT start your question numbering over if you're going to comment on multiple things in one post? I'm going to alternate between roman and arabic numerals, to try to lend my responses some clarity, but it's awkward. (It's not a big deal, but it would be helpful in the future.)

1. Yes.

1a. Would rather not be pinned down on that point.

2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

3. Among the League, Bruce and Ollie are both foster-fathers. Zatara is a dad. Aquaman's wife is expecting. The rest, not so much.

4. We liked it.

5. You're welcome.

6. Cool.

7. Ditto.

8. Depends on your definition of sentient, I suppose. It's more like a pet.

9. She's a bit more one with it.

10. Glad you liked it.

I. Yeah, not latin.

II. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

III. She's the daughter of an adult hero. And she was originally introduced as a teen long after Robin was introduced. The difference was that she was aged up to adulthood much more rapidly than Dick Grayson. So it seemed to us like it was missing a bet to not introduce her as a teen. Most direct parental relationship we have. Why not play it up?

IV. Seemed fun and in character, but to each his or her own.

1. NO COMMENT.

2a. Keep in mind that J'onn was controlling the scenario until Artemis died.

2b. Yes, she accessed stuff from the minds of others, including (still) J'onn.

2c. J'onn is acquainted with both.

2d. In combat.

3. Both.

4. I don't know. I hadn't noticed it.

5. I liked that too.

6. It wasn't just Robin.

i. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

ii. I had to reread this one a couple times to get your meaning.

iii. Yes, she does.

iv. Mmmhmm.

v. Thanks.

vi. I liked BC's first grade thing too.

vii. It seemed in character.

viii. We aim to please!

I noticed Batman referred to the Light as a secret society of super villains. Was this intentional to draw a connection to the original group (large group made up of some of Earth's greatest villains led by several leaders, i.e. Luthor, Grodd, Wizard, Flashman, etc)? I also detect some similarities between the Light and Luthor's Mankind Liberation Front from Kingdom Come (which largely were human villains trying to overcome Earth's metahumans and aliens) and Marvel's Cabal (biggest villain leaders like Doom, Loki, and Osborn). Were these groups some inspiration in the Light's development? Thank you.

Hello Mr. Weisman. In a recent question (circa mid-November, so by that time you have time for this, it will probably not be so recent) you said that you don't "get" the Speed Force concept. At the risk of seeming presumptuous, I thought I'd try to explain it, at least as far as I get the concept.
The Speed Force is, at it's heart, an attempt to make the Flashes' powers make more sense, from the standpoint of traditional physics. A lot of superpowers are a lot more complex than they might seem at first glance. Superspeed is one of them. The most basic problem is the forces involved. Assume that a person can somehow run at the speed of sound. Now let's assume that they can instantly start and stop at at least that speed. The problem (apart from how they were able to run that fast in the first place) is that the sudden acceleration and decceleration, from the speed of sound to or from a complete stop, would subject the human body to more stress than it can handle. None of the Flashes, as far as I know, have ever been depicted as having superhuman strength and/or durability. The use of their powers, as frequently depicted, would kill them. Then there's the intense friction caused by moving at these speeds. That would also kill them. There are other problems, but these are probably the most outstanding, since they would quickly end any speedster's career.
Under the Speed Force model, the Flash's power is not the ability to move a great speeds. That is merely the most obvious side-effect of his powers. The Flash can access, or, if you prefer, shift himself to the Speed Force. This Speed Force, which is admittedly nebulously defined, is some sort of "additional dimension" where the laws of physics are not quite the same. The best analogy I can come up with is that it's kind of like the Warp Drive from Star Trek (or any similar Sci-Fi property). By shifting himself/accessing this extradimensional space, the Flash may perform superhuman feats by taking advantage of the different ways that physics works there and how it interacts with the "normal" world. He's not really "drawing his speed from an outside source." He's shifting himself along dimensions not normally observable and performing feats that would otherwise be impossible.
In another, behind the scenes, way, the Speed Force allows the creative team to justify increasing numbers of speedsters. Given that the comics were up to Jay, Barry, Wally, Bart, Max Mercury, Jessie Quick, and others, there needed to be a justification.
This is all the Speed Force really is, a new interpretation of the nature of the Flash's powers, in a manner that at least makes a show of addressing the real-life physics involved. Admittedly, it may be overthinking, but few superpowers are as easy as "he just runs really fast," or "he can shrink/grow (don't get me started on the many problems there)." It's what happens when kids who love comics get older and take physics classes, they create the Speed Force to explain why the Flash can survive his powers, or "tactile telekinesis" to explain how Superman can lift things that should collapse under their own weight (or fly without having any clear means of doing so).
Thank you for your time. I don't mean to instruct you or suggest that you take any course of action. It's your show (at least partially) and clearly not mine. I just felt compelled to submit this entry. As a disclaimer, a lot of what I've said was at least inspired by James Kakalios's The Physics of Superheroes, easily the definitive guide to physics in the comic book universe(s). It certainly changed the way I look at a lot of characters.

Greg responds...

I haven't read James' book, but I've met him, talked with him and attended some of his panels. And I admire him and his work. What I love most is how he infuses his panel discussions with HUMOR.

(Likewise, I DO appreciate the tone of your post. It's informative without being confrontational or condescending. Thank you.)

Personally, I think there's an element of over-think to all this Speed-Force stuff, especially if one takes it too seriously. (I could argue that the physics of super-strength don't make a hell of a lot of sense either. But I would never advocate for a "Strength-Force".) But to each his or her own. Again, if folks want to think that Earth-16 has the speed-force, but no one on the planet knows about it, then I'm fine with that compromise.

Is there any reason that the Young Justice comics are a few months behind than the show? And is it necessary to read the comics to absolutely understand all the dynamics of the show?

Greg responds...

1. We have stories to tell (and an unreliable airing schedule). I don't want to skip over stories, just because that puts us behind vis-a-vis airdates that are subject to change. Does it truly matter if we're behind by a couple months?

2. Nope. You don't need to read the comic to enjoy the show or vice versa. But you get more out of both, I believe, if you follow both.

In the series, Demona gave several phony explanations of how she managed to live so long. Such as, stone sleep (Awakening) and stealing minutes of life from humans (City of Stone). Of course, also in City of Stone we found out that her link to Macbeth is the secret of her immortality.

But that was revealed in season 2 before the introduction of Oberon's Children. Demona let it slip in "Temptation" that she had survived through the centuries, but didn't elaborate.

When in production on the first season, did you know what the secret to her immortality would be? And were there other explanations you thought of but ultimately didn't use?

Pretty much by the time we wrote "Enter Macbeth" we knew the basics. Didn't work out the details until "City of Stone".

First off, let me say Young Justice is just outstanding-it has a healthy continuity and keeps me eager for the ability to time-travel so I can watch the next episode. I would like to ask a few questions, though, about the great show.

1. First off, don't let the "Hello Megan" criticism take you down-I find it amusing and sweet on her part because she still needs to explore more of earth. But were you aware there was going to be issues over the catchphrase?

2. Is there any reason why you picked Roy's Arrow identity and not Arsenal, which was his second following 'Speedy'?

3. You said you had mixed feelings of fanfiction, but what do you think of fanart?

4. Why use Artemis instead of Arrowette or the second Speedy?

5. How far do you plan to take the show? (i.e. in regards to death, sex, etc. We already saw a character die, but that was a first)

6. Which voice actors did you know before production?

7. What's the best comment about the show you've received?

8. What was with the 6-month hiatus?

9. Did you ever discuss heroes' children being born in the show?

10. Who came up with the idea to include the classmates in "Targets" and "Home Front"?

11. What do your children think of the show?

12. Was Black Canary often your idea of a fierce or gentle figure (she did show a motherly side with her therapy sessions)?

13. How fat do you want to take Conner/Megan's relationship, as relationships that start early often end early.

14. Which member of the team would you be most eager to meet?

Greg responds...

1. "Issues", no? A response, yes.

2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

3. Generally, I'm a fan of fanart.

4. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

5. I'm not really sure what you're asking here. We're taking the show where it leads.

6. Uh... a lot of 'em. More than I can count off the top of my head. Of our six leads... none. Of our Justice Leaguers: Phil LaMarr (Aquaman), Kevin Michael Richardson (Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern), Vanessa Marshall (Black Canary), Jeff Bennett (Red Tornado). Of The Light: Miguel Ferrer (Vandal Savage), Mark Rolston (Lex Luthor), Marina Sirtis (Queen Bee), Corey Burton (Brain), Thom Adcox (Klarion). Of the Injustice League: Steve Blum (Count Vertigo), Brent Spiner (Joker). And of course, Edward Asner (Kent Nelson), Bill Fagerbakke (Bear), Grey Delisle (Whisper, Dreamer), Kath Soucie (Mera, Joan), Cree Summer (Tula, Mary), Lacey Chabert (Zatanna), Crispin Freeman (Guardian, Speedy/Red Arrow), and more, I'm sure.

7. I don't know off the top of my head. Gotten a lot of nice comments.

8. Don't know.

9. Sure. Mera's pregnant, remember?

10. Brandon and I.

11. They seem to like it.

12. Both.

13. How "fat"? I don't understand.

14. Any or all.

Wanted to tell you that Disordered is perhaps my favorite episode yet. Faux-apocalypse stories have been done before, even though I did really enjoy the previous episode, but I've NEVER seen anyone dedicate time to the emotional fallout from such traumatic experiences. I love that YJ keeps defying expectation. It made the previous episode seem meaningful too, rather than just an excuse for shock value, which is all I normally expect from similar stories.

The dialogue and deliveries in Canary's sessions were pure gold. I loved Wally's the most. Do you ever get impressions on scripts from the voice actors? Get any feedback on this one?

Greg responds...

"Impressions on scripts"? I'm not sure what that means. If you're asking about actor feedback, in general it's been positive. I don't have a specific memory about this one, but keep in mind we recorded it back in September of 2010. My memory's just not that good, I'm afraid.

Would you ever consider the addition of cameo appearances of heros from other shows? (Not necessarily heros from Tiger & Bunny either. Maybe even real-life people look-alikes.) Like Easter eggs for those of us on the web that nerd out over everything!

We've had our share of Easter Eggs, I suppose. Flaming C (or a guy dressed as him) appeared in episode 118, and character designer Phil Bourassa was frozen while barbecuing in episode 101.

I have a few questions...

1) How old is Killer Frost?

2) Is Captain Atom composed of living nuclear energy like in the comics or does he have a real flesh and blood body under his containment suit? I only ask because during the Failsafe episode he was depicted wearing an oxygen mask in space like the other JLA heavy hitters, suggesting he needs to breathe and thus must have a corporeal body on Earth 16 unlike in his other cartoon & comic appearances.

3) Is Miss Martian really Martian Manhunter's niece? I'm not curious about her Martian racial background etc (I know there's still some secrecy circulating around her yet to be revealed & I respect that), I'd just like to know if she's really related to the Martian Manhunter, i.e. that part of her origin is officially canon & not a mystery to be unraveled. My apologies in advance if this question counts as spoilers.

Greg responds...

1. Twenty-seven.

2. Captain Atom was NOT composed of living nuclear energy in the comics I wrote with Cary Bates in the eighties and early nineties. (I don't know what they've done since.) We've followed the original template that Cary and I used. There's no containment suit. That's a coating of alien metal covering his flesh and blood body. And, yes, he does need to breathe.

3. According to Red Arrow, who got his information from Black Canary, who in turn got it from Martian Manhunter, she is.

I thought that would mean he has accelerated healing, but he's had a broken arm for almost a month now (Broken in Revelation, Oct. 1, and and still has a cast in Disordered, Oct. 23). I expected it to heal much faster, so:
Do Kid Flash and the Flash have accelerated healing in this universe? If so, how much faster is it than a normal human's healing abilities?

Greg responds...

I don't much like to quantify things.

But Kid Flash does have accelerated healing. But perhaps not as accelerated as you may be used to from the comment.

Flash is WAY faster than Kid Flash... and so I assume he heals way faster too.

Hey Greg, I have seen the recent episodes of "Young Justice" and that I have seen who the members of "The Light" (Project Cadmus' Board of Directors) are. L-1 is Vandal Savage, L-2 is Ra's al Ghul, L-3 is Lex Luthor, L-4 is one of the Bialyan Queen Bees, L-5 is Ocean Master (there hasn't been a mentioning if he and Orm are the same thing yet), L-6 is Brain, and L-7 is Klarion the Witch Boy. The episode "Revelations" had them using the Injustice League as their proxies where you and Jamie Thomason had casted Alyssa Milano as Poison Ivy and Brent Spiner as Joker. Brent did a good job with his rendition of Joker.

Back with the Bialyan Queen Bee that Marina Sirtis voices, there were two Bialyan Queen Bees in DC Comics. The first one was an enemy of Justice League International until she was assassinated by Colonel Rumaan Harjavti's brother Sumaan. The second one is the sister of the previous Bialyan Queen Bee named Beatriz who status is unknown after Captain Marvel's Extreme Justice team brought an end to her activities. So which of these Bialyan Queen Bees did you place as L-4?

I was pleased with how you shown the Forever People, Desaad, and Intergang in "Disordered." When it came to Intergang, the only members identified were Bruno Mannheim (the son of Moxie "Boss" Mannheim) and Whisper A'Daire (who used to work for Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins) while the rest seemed to be Intergang foot soldiers. When it came to Desaad, there was a reference about Desaad's master probably indicating that Darkseid and the other New Gods of Apokolips might appear at some point.

I found the therapy sessions to be interesting, as well. I actually do have a question about some of the things Robin said. Obviously, this was a very crucial moment in his development as a character. 1. Were his concerns about taking over the Batman mantle supposed to be an allusion to the kind of Batman Dick became in the comics? Or was it more of a Nightwing reference? 2. Was Black Canary the only one Dick felt comfortable opening up to? If given the chance, would he have confided in Alfred and Bruce?

1) How close are Green Arrow and Artemis? Because in Homefront, when everyone is waking up from Red Tornado's attack, Superman is waking Artemis up and Green Arrow's off to the side somewhere. Is she even really his sidekick, or is she just given the costume by the JLA so she can be on the team?

2) Is nobody at all concerned that this team of relatively untrained teenagers is being put on missions the JLA can't handle?

Greg responds...

1. Basically, I'm going to tell you to stay tuned and/or check out our companion comic books for the answer to this.

2. No one said the League couldn't "handle" these missions. What's been said is that the League is very high profile, and for them to gather covert intelligence can sometimes be difficult due to their celebrity.

Recently, somebody asked you if you were familiar with C. S. Lewis' work, and you said "No", apart from seeing a couple of adaptations of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". I thought that you might like to know that Lewis and Roger Lancelyn Green were friends, and that it's thanks to Green that "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" was finished and published.

When Lewis was writing "Lion", he read some of it to J. R. R. Tolkien; Tolkien had done the same to him with "The Lord of the Rings" when he was writing it, and Lewis wanted to return the favor. Tolkien thought that "Lion" was dreadful, however, and made that clear. Lewis was so saddened by Tolkien's critique that he considered abandoning the story, but first read it to Roger Lancelyn Green. Green told him, "No, this is a great story, you mustn't drop it," and his words encouraged Lewis to complete the story and get it published.

Green also included a tribute to Lewis in his King Arthur book. One of Lewis's fantasy novels for adults, "That Hideous Strength" had Merlin awakening in the modern world to help the main characters defeat an Illuminati-type organization; Lewis had Merlin sleeping beneath a forest called Bragdon Wood. In Green's "King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table", one of the places where Merlin is said to be sleeping is "beneath the Wood of Bragdon". Since you especially liked Green's book on King Arthur (and even drew on it for Blanchefleur, and Percival's parentage), I thought you might enjoy hearing about that (and I hope the Wood of Bragdon wasn't on your list of places for King Arthur and Griff to visit during their search for Merlin, since it was Lewis' invention!).

Greg responds...

I did not know about the Green/Lewis connection. I did know about Tolkien/Lewis, but this is great additional info. Thanks.

Hi Greg, just a few comments/question I wanted to share

First of all I'd like to say just how much I've been enjoying young justice, it's well planned out and I can't wait to see how the show will play out.

Second; I know you answered the languages all of the six main characters can speak, but what about Zatanna, red arrow, batman, red tornado and black canary?

And also, I know next week episode 18 is to air, but the next two weeks are not airing. Will the new episodes be up the following week or is that TBD?

Thanks for your time :)

Greg responds...

First, thanks.

Second... I won't pretend I've thought all this out. Some of it seems pretty obvious though:
Zatanna - English, Italian, high school French...
Batman - I imagine he's very much multi-lingual.
Red Tornado - I would assume he's programmed with a ton of languages.
As for Red Arrow and Black Canary, I'd have to give it some thought.

And episode 19 premieres March 3rd, 2012 on Cartoon Network.

There may not have been an archived answer, but I've asked over and over again that people check the UNANSWERED QUESTION QUEUE before posting the EXACT SAME QUESTION again. If your answer's coming, why ask again?

So, yes, I do get frustrated. I assume EVERYONE is getting frustrated by the constant refrain of "ASKED AND ANSWERED" and "SPOILER REQUEST. And even THIS question, by the way, has been asked over and over again.

All of which simply bogs down the queue, which is why I keep having to close it off to catch up.

1. Miss Martian is clearly a white martian if she is can she at least be a good looking white martian? I mean seriously I have seen the white martians and I am not fond of them.
2. When Superboy said he was "at peace" does that just means he wants to live up to Superman's expectations but can't so he was happy?
3. Honestly I love that you put Superboy and Miss M together because they were so perfect so now Artemis is out of the way and she clearly likes Wally

4. Does Cheshire still love Artemis since that is her sister?

3)In 'Disordered' Black Canary said her first Canary Cry was in the first grade. Did you make that part up or was it mentioned in another show or comic?

1. He never said he would "stay" to care for Morrow. He said he would care for him. And what he meant was that he'd see that Morrow received good care.

So, I just watched the episode Disordered. Why is it that Dick came to the realization he came to in the episode 5 years earlier than in the comics? I believe he was 18 when he left Batman and became Nightwing, and it was around that time he finally realized that he didn't have to be exactly like Batman. I just think that because of the brevity of the time (two episodes -- really 3 scenes) it lessened the impact that realization could've been made into.

Greg responds...

I think we're talking apples and oranges. Of course, we're not in continuity at all with the comics, so that's neither here nor there. We're just trying to be true to OUR version of the character. He's not leaving Batman or becoming Nightwing here. He's just had a painful epiphany, which seemed very appropriate to us given the circumstances. If you think that epiphany came to soon, well, you're absolutely entitled to that opinion. But obviously we disagree over here. C'est la vie.

I haven't seen "Young Justice" before today, since I don't have cable, but I discovered that my local library has a copy of the first four episodes on DVD, and so checked it out.

I thought that the series was well-animated, and liked those place/time captions at the bottom. (They reminded me of "The X-Files".) I was also pleased to note that, even though I'm not a DC Comics expert (the only member of the team I knew anything about outside the context of the cartoon was Robin), I was able to understand what was going on in spite of that, and who the characters were.

I also liked the way you distinguished Aqualad from his two initial teammates, Robin and Kid Flash, by having Robin and Kid Flash talk in an everyday style, while Aqualad has a more dignified speech pattern. (Kind of like the difference between the trio's speech patterns and Goliath's.)

A few thoughts on specific episodes.

INDEPENDENCE DAY/FIREWORKS: The opening amused me. Four different super-hero-and-protege pairs, with different styles and atmospheres, and they're all fighting cold-themed super-villains! (I'm glad that Batman said they should look into why four cold-themed super-villains were all on the loose on the same day, though I don't know if that question's been answered yet in the series.)

I also got a kick out of the Hall of Justice scene, where somebody thinks that Speedy is Kid Flash's name (no wonder Speedy changes his name to Red Arrow!), followed by the Justice League telling the proteges that most people don't get to see this much of the Hall of Justice - and then we see the tourists looking in through the window!

Those creatures roaming about Cadmus Labs were positively creepy, especially the imp-like ones that perched on people's shoulders and mind-controlled them. Though it was a big surprise when they turned out to be a lot more friendly than they looked, and just wanted their freedom.

WELCOME TO HAPPY HARBOR: Kid Flash's comment on Miss Martian shape-shifting into his form was great.

I suspected that Superboy felt so uneasy about Miss Martian using telepathy on him because of his background, even before the characters said that.

I remember your comment about how you often felt unsettled when those fights in "Gargoyles" destroyed historical artifacts; I got that feeling myself when the team's fight with Twister demolished what looked like a historic old house.

The revelation that: a) Twister had a human pilot inside, and b) the "human pilot" was really a robot, definitely startled me. Two of the biggest surprises in those four episodes. (Almost like "The Edge" and "Leader of the Pack" merged.)

DROP ZONE: Aqualad telling off Robin for acting as if he was still working with Batman, who knows Robin's methods and vice versa, when the rest of the team don't have that kind of understanding of him, was great. (No wonder he winds up team leader - though I laughed when Robin said that Aqualad's the best pick for that job - and thus the best pick for explaining to Batman why the mission wound up far less covert than it was supposed to be!) Got a smile, also, out of Batman's talk to the team at the end, going from reprimanding them for their mistakes to congratulating them.

The Light make a great "big bad" for the series, all the more so because of their title. The word "light" so often has positive connotations that it's creepy to see it used for the main antagonists.

A great start. I hope that the library gets more episodes on DVD soon.

Greg responds...

Me too!!

Hey I'm relatively new to reading American comics. I really enjoyed your work on Spectacular Spider-man, been a long time fan of the DC animated Universe so I was happy to see you'd be working on Young Justice. So far it's been a pleasure. I especially enjoyed Failsafe. I noticed the trend of the number 16 (16 member Justice League, 16 week old Superboy, 16 earth years is M'gann's age and so on) was that to hint at this episode or will this trend continue? Either way, well done. I didn't actually like Superboy and M'gann together at first but their relationship is blossoming beautifully now they are together, I suppose it was mostly Superboy's anger but it's nice to see him them happy and treated as equals. I think they are a wonderful message for kids in how to treat each other as equals in a relationship. I hope the revelation of M'gann's true powers don't cause too much trouble for them. Though I doubt it. Her catchphrase is adorable, happy to see Wally adopt it. I was surprised that Wally and Artemis didn't share a moment at the end of the episode until I realised it would probably ruin the tension and emotion of the revelation a the end of the episode.

Sorry this sort of turned into a Young Justice Appreciation post instead of a question.

Greg responds...

As for your query about the number 16, it goes deeper than that, since the whole series is set on Earth-16.

Michael J. Eilen writes...

Hey greg, my name is Michael. I was a huge fan of your spectacular spiderman series. And I'm not sure if you're gonna know the answer to my question or not, but I'm just gonna shoot for it. Question: Do you have any idea why Marvel canceled it? I mean, both season 1 and 2 had decent reviews and many fans liked it. So, I gotta ask,Do you have any idea why Marvel made that decision.

Greg responds...

Marvel DIDN'T cancel it.

It's all very complicated, and we were certainly the recipients of bad corporate luck, but no single company cancelled the series. We just wound up with a situation where no single company could proceed with it.

I'll try to break it all down:

1. Sony had originally produced SpecSpidey as part of their overall entertainment license of the Spidey property (which of course included the extremely lucrative live action films).

2. But in order to win some concession on those live action feature films, Sony returned the animation rights to the character back to Marvel.

3. So now only Marvel could produce a Spider-Man cartoon. Sony no longer could, which meant SpecSpidey couldn't continue at Sony.

4. I have no idea whether Marvel was interested in continuing Spectacular Spider-Man or not. But let's assume for the sake of argument that they would have liked to.

5. They couldn't.

6. Why? Because Sony owned all the specific elements (designs, storyline, etc.) to the SpecSpidey VERSION of Spider-Man. So Marvel would have had to license all that BACK from Sony.

7. You can imagine how unlikely THAT scenario was. Marvel finally gets the rights back to do an animated version of their marquee character, and then they have to pay Sony to do it instead of just starting from scratch. That was never going to happen.

8. Of course, all this was complicated by the fact that Disney purchased Marvel, and Disney and Sony are direct competitors.

9. And I'm sure Marvel was excited to put their own stamp on an animated Spider-Man. Who could blame them?

10. So that was it. We were toast through no fault of our own. The folks at Marvel, Sony and even Disney all seemed to like our show, but the corporate mess made it impossible for us to continue.

11. And, yes, it is a bummer. (For me, at least.) But it's no single person or single company's fault. It's just how things shook out.

12. And finally, though I have no involvement with the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man, you can't deny that a lot of great people have worked on it. There's no reason to think it won't be as good or better than SpecSpidey. To a certain generation, SpecSpidey will always be THEIR Spider-Man cartoon. But to a new batch o' viewers, I'm sure their Spidey of choice will be the Ultimate.

Greg responds...

I'm afraid I'm not willing to answer any of this. It isn't politic for me to get into these issues with the fans. And if I answer for some characters, then by implication the ones I don't answer for are de facto "answered".

So generally, I'll say what I've stated before. When we started development on the series, there were less than ten characters that we expressed an INTEREST in using that we were told were off-limits. Since then, some of those are NO LONGER off-limits. And the ones that still are can be counted on one hand.

But ALL OF THIS only applies to characters we ASKED about. I have no idea whether characters we DIDN'T ask about are off-limits or not.

(I wasn't about to annoy everyone by making them check every single character in the DCU legally to find out whether or not they were off limits if we had no intention of using them ever.)

But rest assured, we were ALWAYS designed to be a series that explored the depth and breadth of the DC Universe. You won't have a shortage of characters. That, I guarantee.

Well, first, sorry for a typo in a question I recently sent you about Castle Wyvern. I meant haunted, not hunted.

Also, I want to mention the Young Justice episode "Failsafe". I actually missed the episode the week before, so at first I was really confused. I thought at first maybe an alien invasion started in that episode out of nowhere and this was part two. After Batman died, it was hard to take it seriously, as in, I knew at that point that I was wrong and that this episode was going to end up being similar to "Future Tense". There were a few points for a second I actually questioned it though. Such as when Martian Manhunter came in, I easily bought the whole idea that the beams were just teleporting people. Again, I feel this might be just a result of missing the previous episode, assuming I just missed something big (Such as when I unfortunately missed the episode where apparently Red Tornado was forced into betraying the team by his programming, I don't know much about what happened there, only info I have on that is from what the characters said in following episodes.) I'm not for certain when I came back to the idea that the episode was going to have a "Future Tense" sort of ending, I think it probably was the point when Manhunter said he was wrong about the beams, since, if the beams really did kill the people they hit, obviously Manhunter would've been dead. It was a pretty good episode though as always.

I suppose the only question I really have is if comparisons(I was reading through unanswered questions earlier and I saw another person making the comparison) between "Failsafe" and "Future Tense" bug you? Or just comparisons between Gargoyles and any other work you've done since. (As in "Oh, that character is just like *whoever* from Gargoyles" or "Oh, this is just like that one episode of Gargoyles" I suppose.)

Greg responds...

I take all that with a grain of salt.

Obviously, when I was working on Failsafe, I was aware of what we had done back in the day on Future Tense. But the truth is that Brandon came up with the springboard for Failsafe, and he and I worked together with writer Nicole Dubuc to just make this episode the best IT could be.

After that, I realize some comparisons are inevitable, but ultimately the episode either stands on its own or it doesn't. I think it does. Others might disagree. That's what makes it a horse race, as they say.

1. What is Earth-16 Clark Kent like to the outside world? Judging by how relatively disheveled he looked in "Schooled", he seems the clumsy nerd from the Donner movies.

2. Besides you voicing Snapper Carr and Nicole Dubuc voicing Iris West-Allen, will any of the other writers be voicing characters on Young Justice?

3. If Earth-16 Ma and Pa Kent were really Jor-El and Lara, what stopped them from using their powers like Superman does?

Greg responds...

1. He seemed quite sheveled to me. I don't know why you even say that. He had a hat for heaven's sake.

2. No. Nicole and I are both in SAG. The rest of the writing staff is not. (Least not as far as I know.)

How old is Captain Atom? and what kind of powers does he have in this show?

Greg responds...

Captain Atom is 70 years old (though he doesn't look a day over 28).

Cap is connected to the quantum field via his silver skin, which allows him to access clean (NOT RADIOACTIVE) energy and fire off bolts of energy. That same energy can also be used to power his flight and even to enhance his strength. His skin also makes him largely invulnerable. And he can even survive in deep space without a pressure suit of any kind, as long as he has oxygen. (He still needs to breathe.)

Cap can also ABSORB energy and redirect it back to the quantum field. But there's a limit as to how much energy he can absorb and how quickly. If he takes in too much energy at once, the excess will be used as fuel for a one-way trip into the future. The more he absorbs the further into the future he'll jump.

So the story behind this ramble actually goes back two years, starting when I first read your Ramble on EQUIVOCATION:

http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=817

Regrettably I would not have the chance to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival that year, dedicating my travel expenses to the last Gathering in Los Angeles. Before I go any further, can I say that I am quite jealous that you and your family go every year to Ashland? Because I am d:

Anyways, it didn't hit me until about month or so later that I could simply buy a copy of the script just as you had mentioned doing. A thorough look at (and a telephone call to) the OSF's Tudor Guild Gift Shop revealed they had quickly sold out of their entire supply, and that odds were, it'd be a while till they got more, if ever. Of course, by the time I DID check back with them, the OSF was done foe the season and Equivocation was not being performed again in the near future.

Fast forward to summer 2011, where I stumbled upon a copy of the play script at my old college in Los Angeles. I don't know how the conversation started, but the person I was talking to mentioned that the school was trying to get permission to perform the play that school year!

But before I allowed myself to get excited, I remembered I was only in town for the week to visit some friends I hadn't seen in over a year since I graduated in May 2010. My friend sympathized that my horrible, horrible timing wouldn't have me in Los Angeles if and when they did perform the play (and especially after hearing me recite your ramble from 2009 with alarming precision) he was generous enough to let me take a script with me back home!

I tried to be patient, reminding myself that I had waited two years to find a copy and that the AskGreg queue was closed during the Young Justice hiatus, but that VERY short flight back to Phoenix was suddenly felt like an eternity. Of course, its just my luck that even though I read it back in early August, I only JUST now remembered to write this rambling as yesterday (November 5th, 2011) was Guy Fawkes Night.

So did I enjoy the play, even when I only read it as a script?

In a word: YES. :D

But one thing is for sure: I really, really want to catch an actual performance now. I won't go into too much detail here (since you've seen the play and I don't want to spoil others that might read this before catching/reading the play themselves), but I will say this play reminds me quite a bit like Shakespeare in Love (a film I also remember you writing about more than once), though its obvious that (even if Stoppard and Cain were working with the same muse) this is a noticeably older Shag than the Will we saw in the 1998 film. For one, Shag's working for the King James VI/I and not Queen Elizabeth. For another, the only person caring for him these days is the very mature Judith. Finally, he's now an established name (he'll still be remembered in, oh, fifty year's time!), though the romances and comedies seemed to have been eclipsed with his slew of historical plays, earning him the reputation of killing "more Kings than any man alive."

The various references to Shag's other plays were fun, especially Hamlet and Macbeth. Speaking of the Scottish Play, remembering what you said about how Macbeth (in the Gargoyles Universe) was a drinking buddy of Shakespeare's, I vaguely wonder how the events in Equivocation looked from his perspective. ;)

I'll also say that after briefly mentioning "Doc Shakespeare" in your Equivocation ramble, I made sure to pay close attention to Judith's interactions with Shag, if only to one day have them as a reference point in understanding the characters . . . much like I hear Roger Lancelyn Green's works are a good place to see your early inspirations for King Arthur.

I must also admit to re-reading your thoughts from 1999/2000 about how Shakespeare in Love opened a door to understanding Will as a man . . . and having missed out on the 2005 Gathering in Las Vegas, I can only imagine how you treated Will (and Judith) in Doc Shakespeare. I guess I'm just hopeful to one day see you a work of yours introduce William Shakespeare the man, be it in the Gargoyles Universe or some other original work (and references in shows like The Spectacular Spider-Man will always be fun too).

I'll end this by saying THANK YOU so much for recommending Equivocation. I look forward to watching a performance one day (may the stars align soon) and its only a matter of time before I find my way to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Greg responds...

Well, I've seen Equivocation twice now. That first time in Ashland, and again here in Los Angeles (Westwood, specifically) at the Geffen Theatre, starring Joe Spano (from Hill Street Blues) as Shag. He was also fantastic in the part. I just love this play.

His take on Judith is different from mine, as is his take on Susannah (who doesn't appear but is mentioned). But I've got no complaints.

I do tend to shy away from portraying Will Shakespeare himself in my stuff. It makes me nervous. Even in Doc Shakespeare, Will is an off-screen presence. Talked about - but never appearing.

We do try to go to Ashland every year, and I've never been disappointed. Ashland was also the first place I ever saw Stoppard's ARCADIA, which may be one of the most brilliant plays I've ever seen.

I did a search for "speed force" and didn't find anything that answered my question so I hope this isn't a duplicate.

Someone asked you why you "got rid of the speed force on Earth 16" and you replied that you didn't get rid of it on Earth 16 because it was never there.

My question is, why? Why did you decide that you didn't want the speed force on Earth 16? I like the speed force. It doesn't necessarily bother me that there won't be an episode about the speed force on Young Justice, but it does kinda bother me that there CAN'T be an episode about the speed force.

Greg responds...

I'll admit I don't understand the Speed-Force. It comes after my time, so to speak, but I'll ask again, if there's a speed-force, does that also mean there's also a strength-force or an archery-force, etc.? What makes the concept necessary and not just unnecessarily complicated? I've not personally read the materials where it first appeared, so I have NO OPINION of them, but no one's ever been able to explain it to me OUT OF CONTEXT in a way that didn't cause me to make a 'yucky' face.

And AGAIN, I'll restate what I've stated many times since, which is that no one on Earth-16 has HEARD of the Speed-Force. If you want to believe it's there, but they just don't know about it, more power to you.

And again, you may have checked the archives for this. But did you check the UNANSWERED QUESTIONS queue? Because I know I've dealt with this multiple times before, so your search to make sure this wasn't "a duplicate" leaves a little to be desired.

Hello, Mr. Weisman. Let me start by saying that I have followed Young Justice since the premier in November, and I think this is one of the best adaptions of the DC Universe by far. This week's episode (Failsafe) kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Your take on each and every one of these classic characters is amazing, and I cannot wait to see what happens with the rest of the season, as well as Season 2.

Now, I have been searching the archives for a while and have not come upon this topic at all, so if I missed it, I apologize for asking a question that's all ready been answered. In Batman: Brave and the Bold, there was an episode that featured a villain by the name of Crazy Quilt. In the episode, this particular character held a grudge against Robin (Dick Grayson) because while he was still working as Batman's partner, it was the Boy Wonder who accidentally caused Crazy Quilt to go blind. This was my first time hearing of this character, so after the episode ended, I looked him up and found that this episode was extremely accurate to the character's comic book history.

So my question is what is your take on Crazy Quilt? As one of the few DC villains to actually hate Robin more than his mentor, is there a possibility of him appearing at some point?

Alright, so, I'm curious about something. In Episode 2 Owen tells Xanatos that the cost of moving the castle and rebuilding it brick by brick would be "Astronomical". He also mentions something about the castle being hunted. Now, obviously now I know it was Hakon and the Captain. What I am wondering is if that was what was meant by that line at the time it was written for Owen, or if it was just a random throwaway line that ended up evolving into a part of the story like with Matt Bluestone's line about the Illuminati.

I think he said the locals thought it was "haunted". Not "hunted." But more or less, yes. We had a notion of it.

Hi Greg!
I am so excited about Young Justice I just wanted to say good job on the characters and especially Miss Martian and Superboy. I have a few questions:

1. In Failsafe of Young Justice could Miss Martian possibly be more powerful than the Phoenix Force?
2. Will Artemis and Wally ever find out that Miss Martian and Superboy are dating?
3. In Homefront we saw a flash back that had Artemis and a girl that looked like Cheshire and in Targets Cheshire said: "Archery girl I like her" If that is someone Artemis knows does Cheshire really care about her?
4. In Failsafe (Favorite episode) when Martian Man Hunter was saying: "her mind is by far stronger than mine could the team hear what he was saying?
5. (Last question Greg)At the end of Failsafe when Miss Martian was crying in Capt. Marvel's Arms why did Superboy look sad and was holding his arm tightly?
Thank you so much Greg for putting time into answering my questions and you are doing a real good job you and the staff of course I don't watch TV alot but Young Justice gives me something to look forward too. Real Good Job.
P.S. do you consider doing a season 3?

Greg responds...

1. Apples and oranges.

2. Artemis found out in episode 118.

3. When Cheshire referred to "Archery Girl" she was talking about Artemis. And Artemis' sister in the flashback was Cheshire. Otherwise, I'm not sure I understand the question.

4. In theory, Superboy could. But I don't think he was listening.

5. I'll leave that to your interpretation.

I looked high and low, and did not see this question asked or answered anywhere on Ask Greg. Forgive me if I did manage to miss something.

Anyhow, you're very much on record as not being pleased with Grant Morrison's take on General Eiling (which I just learned I had been pronouncing wrong since I was a kid - I puzzled it out as I-ling while reading Morrison's JLA when I was nine...I'm 21 now). I was wondering how you felt about John Ostrander's addition to the character's history. Spoilers for "Suicide Squad: Raise The Flag' mini-series follow.

In that series, it is revealed that Rick Flag, Jr. was not the son of the original Suicide Squad's leader but instead was soldier that General Eiling brainwashed into being a weapon at Eiling's command. It was Eiling who placed him in charge of the second Suicide Squad and forced Waller to put him with the third (the most familiar version, with the villains). He was also more than willing to leave Flag to his own devices until activating he was in a position to be effectively used. I have not been able to track down your run on Captain Atom, so I don't rightly know how you handled the character and I am curious to see how that portrayal fit with your vision of the character. Hopefully, presuming you haven't read the mini, I summarized it well enough.

Greg responds...

Look, none of this is quite fair. Personally, I haven't read Morrison's take on Eiling, nor have I read Ostrander's.

The fact that I reacted negatively (once upon a time) to someone's synopsis of Morrison's version only proves... that like anyone, I can be guilty of judging something without looking at it myself, something that I abhor when folks do it to me.

So I'm just not going to respond to your question, because that's what it's inviting me to do. And I'm trying to be a better person. Or at least less of a hypocrite.

Captain Marvel was only den mother for a week. Then it was Zatara's turn. Then Black Canary. (Maybe a few others in between.) Red Tornado is now back as their permanent den mother, though that doesn't mean you won't see other Leaguers hanging around the Cave.

The robot Red Torpedo was disguised as the human mystery man Red Torpedo. And, yes, that was an existing character. I did NOT make him up. But he wasn't ever in the Justice Society - though he was in the All-Star Squadron.

Greg, I'm not sure if you do know a lot about guns, but I noticed an error in "Failsafe":

After watching "Failsafe", I noticed the US Marines in that episode were still using Vietnam War M16A1 assault rifles even though they've replaced them with M16A2s back in the mid-late 1980s. I can tell that they are M16A1s because the handgrips looks triangular (M16A2 handgrips are cylindrical) and the marines were firing their rifles on fully automatic mode (M16A2s fires in 3-round bursts).

At first I just wrote it off as a technical error, but some things dawned on me after the reveal that Megan was controlling the simulation: Megan learned most of what she knew about Earth from 50's TV (at least, I think that's when Hello Megan is supposed to have aired) and that Hawaii and Alaska didn't become states until 1959.

Failsafe

Well, this one kept me guessing. Mostly between dream and simulation. I know that teleporting beams were a possibility, but one I dismissed. Story structure wise, you don't do something this, well... apocalyptic, early in a series. I knew a twist was coming, but I had no idea which of the two it would be. Surprise, surprise it was both.

I've already seen people compare it to "Over the Edge," an episode of "The New Adventures of Batman" I always thought was severely overrated. In that episode, Barbara Gordon falls off a building and dies, Gordon blames Batman and swears vengeance; Batman is publicly unmasked, becomes a fugitive; Gordon is kicked off the case and then hires Bane to help him take down Batman; Bane betrays Gordon; Gordon and Batman die; and then Barbara wakes up and it was a nightmare induced by Scarecrow's fear toxin. She then vows to tell her father the truth to prevent something like that from actually happening and then doesn't. And then I throw my remote control at the TV. What a crock! Not only is there no internal logic to the nightmare, I mean... who has a dream or nightmare where they are dead and their mind is playing this? And then she decides to do something that would result in character development and change the status quo in an interesting way and doesn't? Really! Then I got on the internet and found out this was one of the most revered episodes of the series.

I've seen "Failsafe" get compared to "Over the Edge" several times already, and while "Failsafe" isn't perfect, it doesn't cheat anywhere near as much as "Over the Edge" did. If it did, the entire Team would have been killed in the first two minutes and this still would have been their simulation and dream. That, and the outcome of what happened here will likely have lasting consequences as opposed to Barbara deciding to tell and then not tell her dad she was Batgirl. I'm a firm believer in continuity and actions having consequences, and while I loved "Batman the Animated Series" and its spin-offs quite a bit, it tended to shrug off long term consequences to keep a certain status quo.

I think a closer comparison would be to the "Gargoyles" episode, "Future Tense." Like "Failsafe," that episode was both a dream and an illusion. Apocalyptic things happen, and you keep waiting to find out what the twist is going to be, but it also throws so much at you, you're distracted from thinking about it... you just know that something is wrong. Overall, I thought "Future Tense" was far more effective at distracting you on that first viewing. I also felt that it played fair more than "Failsafe." In "Future Tense," we never left Goliath. He was in every scene, and we saw everything he was seeing, and nothing else. While "Failsafe" was cutting to civilians hiding in bunkers, and other moments that no one on The Team was witnessing. And if they weren't witnessing it, why was it part of the simulation and their dream?

"Failsafe" was better than "Over the Edge" but not as good as "Future Tense." But then, few things are. It may be a little unfair of me to make the comparisons either way, but that's where my mind went and those were the comparisons that I drew. A comparison to a similar premise in a DC animated production and in another Greg Weisman production.

I really enjoyed seeing General Wade Eiling make his animated debut, at last. And with his proper design and the correct pronunciation of his name. Eiling appeared in "Justice League Unlimited" but with a different look, since General Hardcastle's design was pretty close to Eiling's comic design, and back in 2007, when Greg Weisman and I were having lunch together at a Taco Bell near the Sony studio he was producing "Spectacular Spider-Man" at, we briefly discussed Captain Atom, and I pronounced Eiling the way JLU did, and he corrected me. Since he co-created the character with Cary Bates, I think he'd know. Just like Dennis O'Neil knows the proper pronunciation of Ra's al Ghul even if Christopher Nolan does not.

I hope to see more of Eiling. I've read some of Greg and Cary's Captain Atom run, and he's a terrific character.

The ending of the episode opens a lot of possibilities and lasting consequences. M'Gann is more powerful than previously thought. I have some theories on where this will lead, but I am not well versed in DC lore, so I intend to keep them to myself... except for one. I am convinced she is a White Martian. And hey, this episode has plenty to make both people who love and hate the character happy. People who like her get a great episode that focused on her. While the people who hate her can make an animated gif of her getting stabbed by Martian Manhunter. Everybody wins.

Great episode, and if you will indulge me one more comparison to "Future Tense," well was it a dream or a prophesy? With the second season being titled "Invasion," that's something to ponder.

Greg responds...

Well, we figured very few people would believe we were killing everyone off. So we intentionally put in the "teleportation" option to distract from the possibility that it might be a simulation or dream (let alone both).

I haven't seen "Over the Edge" so I have no comment on that one. As for comparisons to "Future Tense"... well... I'll leave that to you and others to weigh.

For more of Eiling, try to pick up issues 9 and 10 of the Young Justice companion comic.

do you keep all the concept art for all the characters you have made for each show, and are you allowed to give the art to people?

will we have any opportunities to see other Justice Society of America members in cameos? considering Jay Garrick has been seen along with Dr. Fate.

keep up the good work!!

Greg responds...

1. No, the art is not mine to either keep or give away.

2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

Hi, Greg! I just really wanted to say how much I love Young Justice (EHEM understatement) so far!! Honestly, I don't think there's anything you can do that could change that (I would seriously hope not, at least.) I also have been reading some of the archive, and my life is pretty much Tumblr haha, so I've seen much "fan" hate towards you as well as the show in general. Which I think is utter horse crap. Obviously no one is getting the whole "Earth-16" concept, 'cause I see complaints about you guys using different characters a lot. I'll admit I've never read the Young Justice comics, or many of the DC comics due to the fact that I'm mostly a Batman/Dick Grayson fan, but even if I had I still wouldn't mind the characters you guys decided on. I love all of them!! At first I definitely favored Robin, but since new episodes started airing again I've come to the realization that, for once, I have no least favorite character. I seriously can't think of anything that I strongly dislike about YJ. Except the fact that the episodes are only 30 minutes long haha!! I'm so stoked to see how things turn out with The Light!!! :O
Sorry for my ramble-[Halloween] candy does this to me. Any who, I apologize for the extremely rude people you've had to encounter. I really hope this fandom isn't completely ruining the fun of producing the show :[ And before I end this novel of an ASK, I do actually have a question that does not pertain whatsoever to any show you've worked on hahaha hope that's okay. What's your favorite color???
Alright I'm done. Can't wait to see more Young Justice-everything about it is amazing!! <3
Hope you have a good day/night/week/whatever! --Angie--

Thanks for the kind words!

Some YJ Statistics...

Today we recorded (most) of Young Justice episode 220, i.e. the final episode of Season Two. We had a nice little cast party today, which is bittersweet, of course, since we don't know if we're merely taking a break with a pickup coming some day - or whether this is it.

By the time we've finally recorded everyone (probably sometime next week), this single episode will have TWENTY-FOUR voice actors in it. That's 24 actors playing 35 speaking parts. And those 35 speaking parts make up less than half of the 77 total characters that will (likely) appear in the episode.

Other stats (of interest only to the truly nerdy geek):

Across two seasons, we'll have used 91 actors to play all the speaking parts.

Season One had 179 name characters (not all of whom speak, of course) over its 26 episodes. (At least through the script stage. A few, like Catherine Cobert, may have been cut for time by the time the episodes aired, and I haven't recalculated for that.)

Season Two had 145 name characters over 20 episodes.

Together (i.e. if you merge both lists), the two seasons had a total of 241 name characters over 46 episodes.

Season Two scripts ranged between 30 pages long (episode 216) and 36 pages long (201 & 220).

Line counts ranged between 197 lines per script (203) and 255 (214).

Number of actors used per episode ranged between 6 (202) and 24 (220).

Hey greg what’s up I just want to make some commentaries about superman and your opinion of them.

I consider you an amazing writer and I am a big fan of your shows. I specially think that your main strength is creating interesting plot with complex 3 dimensional characters and some of the best villains I have ever seen.
That being said I would like to comment on your portrayal of superman. I am aware that a mayor theme on young Justice is grey areas. You as a great writer have to give flaws to each character. Even goliath from gargoyles had flaws that made him relatable.

However I feel a bit uncomfortable with your portrayal of superman. You aren’t portraying him as some kind of perfect that is always right pure good person. He needs to be flawed to be believable as a character. I also understand the fact that you want to give conflict to superboy by giving him a reason to angst.

That being said I think is a bit odd you choose exactly his relationship with superboy as his flaw. Without entering into the debate of whether or not Superman should parent him as batman suggests (he could have at least talk to him as a friend or as a mentor). His attitude towards superboy has been a bit “un-supermanly”. Not because flaws are unexpected from superman but because this is exactly the flaw I wouldn’t expect from superman (maybe from batman, captain marvel or whatever but not from superman).

As you may know in modern superman mythos, father son relationships have been a pretty big deal on the story of superman.

“The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son” that phrase coined by superman’s franchise sum up that fact. Superman is pretty much and orphan and a stray like superboy . We know that he is a good person thanks to his parent. I think Jorel from smallville summed it best:

Jor-El: We have been down our long road, Kal-El -- one paved with difficult trials. Those trials are behind you now. Any father can only hope that he is one day humbled by the feats of his son. But it is your soul, Kal-El, of which I am most proud. You -- and you alone -- possess the courage, the determination, and the compassion that will be required of you to life the darkness from the Earth. (returns the superman suit to Clark) I ask you to remember one thing. Your abilities may be of my blood, but it is your time in Smallville(Superman was much ore accepting of Conner in that continuity in fact), with Jonathan and Martha Kent and all the people there, that made you a hero, Kal-El.

I also couldn’t help to notice the fact that Goliath from gargoyles that as opposed to superman doesn’t have our idea of parenting was more accepting of his EVIL clone thailog than Superman is from (as far as he is aware) good clone Superboy
We superman fans admire him because he is a good person not just because of his powers. In fact that’s what makes him different from other “flying brick” characters like captain marvel, the sentry Thor or whatever and the reason this specific flaw doesn’t feel right with superman.

Nevertheless in my eyes you are a great writer, this superman dilema has brought a big debate with my friends. This is a testament that you even your subplots leave a lot to talk about

Thanks for yout time

Greg responds...

Okay... mostly, we'll just have to agree to disagree here.

But (a) Superman, or rather Clark Kent is NOT an orphan. He has no memory of being an orphan. He intellectually gets that he was one. But he was raised first by Jor-El and Lara and then by the Kents. He never knew life without parents.

(b) "The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son" comes from movies. I loved the first movie. Haven't cared for any of the others. But either way, I see no particular reason to make THAT a defining characteristic of Superman. I mean, what about his two mothers? Don't they carry equal weight?

(c) I loved the pilot to Smallville, but quickly lost interest after that. I'd tune in occasionally when a promo piqued my interest - but I'm not going to base our version of Superman on anything at all from Smallville. I can't. I didn't see most of it.

I'm trying to go to the CORE of the character, as I know him from years and years of reading, writing and thinking about the character. And, I agree the core of Superman is good. But it's not flawless. And I just don't feel like you're focusing on how TRULY DISTURBING Superboy's mere existence would be to him - on all sorts of levels. I also think that you're not focusing on how little time has passed. Also, he's convinced himself that Superboy is better off NOT being in his shadow. You may disagree. I may disagree. But it's a legitimate POV, and for now he's hanging his hat on that.

And generally, I still think you're looking at the entire issue in very black and white terms, allowing for no shades of grey. Which is EASY to do in our series because we're almost exclusively seeing the problem from SuperBOY's POV. And we're not seeing SuperMAN work through it.

But you know all this already, because I've said all this already. So, like I said - let's just agree to disagree.

I have few questions on Young Justice

1)When coming up with the team what other characters did you consider before settling on the current roster?

2)On the a DC forum someone asked if Young Justice would surpass the Justice League TV series by the end of its run. What are your thoughts on this?

3)Kaldur was favorite character from the start but the episode Downtime made me a fanboy of all things Atlantean, the city, Garth, Mera everything. So am wondering will we get another Atlantis themed episode this season?

And lastly I would just like to give my gratitude to you, Brandon and all the people that make Young Justice possible. Its an amazing show I am thankful for or as they say in Bemba, my native language, Natotela.

Greg responds...

1. As I've said before there was a list of over 50 or 60+ teen characters, i.e. everyone we could think of/that our research turned up. I'm not going to reprint the list here.

2. (a) Define "surpass". (b) We're not in competition with that series, nor would we want to be, so I see no good coming out of this line of thinking.

3. If you want more Atlantis sooner than later, check out issues 14 and 15 of the Young Justice companion comic.

I know you've thoroughly addressed your reasoning behind choosing Dick Grayson for Robin; and I'd assume the choice of Wally West for Kid Flash vs Bart Allen mirrors that to a degree. Moreover, I'm sure ethnic diversity amongst the team played a role in the choice of Kaldur'ahm for Aqualad. However, I'm curious what specifically drew you to Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis.

I'm aware that Wondergirl wasn't option at the time due to legal reasons, so that took one teenage hero equipped with both super-strength and a connection to the league (via Wonder Woman) out of the equation. The other leaguer that occupies the same niche as Wonder Woman is Superman. If you were going for a 'sidekick' of sorts to Superman then you'd have Superboy and Supergirl to choose from - what drew you to him in contrast to her?

What about Artemis was special? I don't necessarily mean in juxtaposition Arrowette or Speedy (Mia Dearden), though I'd love to hear your thought there to, so much as out of all of the DC girls you could have chosen what drew you to her?

Finally, what drew you to Miss Martian? Assuming you wanted an alien character on the team's rosters, you'd have a vast assortment of DC characters at your fingertips that fit that mold.

In conclusion, I want to say that I adore Young Justice and it's characters. This inquiry was purely out of curiosity.

Thank you for your time!

Hi Greg,
Big fan here. And I mean BIG fan. Like, Blockbuster-sized-big fan. This is definitely one of my most favorite (was there a grammar mistake somewhere in there?) shows ever. EVER.
I don't really have any questions about the team. I think you've portrayed them all fabulous, all the way from M'gann's naivety about Earth in the beginning right down to Robin and Wally's amazing BFFosity.
But I do have some questions about the League, since we haven't seen a ton of them yet.
I am a huge fangirl, so...
I was wondering if...
1. Is Hawkwoman with Green Lantern or Hawkman on Earth-16? Neither?
2. Is Batman in a relationship with Catwoman, Princess Diana, or neither?
3. Any other relationships? (Besides the given ones, like GA and BC and Barry and Iris.)

Urgh, pointless question in pointless. Well, thanks for taking the time to look at this. It means a ton to us fanirls everywhere!

Tom writes...

I've always appreciated that the show you create feature so many diverse characters with agency. It's great to see Elisa and her family, to finally seeing Spider-man in New York that features so many people of color in his cast, to having Aqualad and Artemis as such important, interesting characters in Young Justice. I love that your shows aren't engaging in the tokenism the way a lot of other shows (for kids or otherwise) do. And having strong women is a huge part of that--I remember friends in 4th grade fighting over who got to be Elisa or Demona at recess. So thank you for that!

I think with shows that are adapted from comics, there's this predicament of wanting to pay homage to decades of comic book history while not carrying forward the inherent racism and sexism of the eras when they were written. I think The Batman botched that when Detective Yin was replaced by Commissioner Gordon--closer to the comics, but axes a female, minority lead for a white male.

Not to mention the pressures from other areas. I remember hearing Dwayne McDuffie say that even in the height of its popularity, companies had no interest in making Static Shock toys, for example.

So, how do you handle this? Whether it's selecting minority/women characters from comics, creating new ones, or changing characters races like in Spectacular Spider-man, what's that process like when you make your shows?

Greg responds...

Um... mostly... I just try to reflect the world I see. I'm a sheltered white boy, but even a sheltered white boy would have to be blind not to see that the world is populated with more than just sheltered white boys. So putting in strong female characters and strong characters of color seems natural and easy, frankly.

If you're asking for process, though, it's very much case by case. We don't sit there and go, "We need 2.5 minorities on the Team with 23% females." Instead, we build a diverse cast of characters, character by character. When adapting a property (as opposed to creating one from scratch, like GARGOYLES), we DO pay attention to tradition. But some characters are certainly more iconic than others. So Robin, Kid Flash and Superman's clone remain Caucasian, and there was never any thought of changing them. But by using Garth's Tempest identity, it freed us up to create a new Aqualad, as the son of Black Manta - in part, to demonstrate the alternate Earth idea, i.e. this is Earth-16, and one decision changed the course of it's history (continuity) from what we're familiar with in the comics. As for Artemis, we felt she was obscure enough to make her half-Vietnamese, without fundamentally changing what mattered most about her. Likewise, her mother Paula Brooks-Crock seemed obscure enough to go ahead and make her the Vietnamese Paula Nguyen-Crock, as that also helped us make her Cheshire's mother, since Cheshire has always been the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and a Caucasian father. Maybe "obscure" isn't the right word, but I think you get the idea. As for Miss Martian, well, obviously she's a Martian, but I suppose we could have made her Megan Morse identity a minority too. (We portrayed her uncle John Jones as African, after all.) But again, we're not trying to meet quotas, and as you'll eventually see, we had reasons for the choices we made with Megan.

Howdy Mr. Weisman,
I tried checking around your archive, but didn't find this question or a couple of others. For starters, I LOVE Young Justice, you guys are doing an awesome job with it! So, my interrogation is this.
1- In the episode Bereft, Miss Martian restoring Superboy's memories show a clip of her in her human form a the local Happy Harbor High School cheerleading practice attire, but they hadn't went to high school yet. At first I thought it was probably an airing mishap of the episodes, but then on the episode Targets when they went to school, the Sphere was present. I'm confused. I also noticed a farm present when Miss Martian and Superboy's minds connected, could this farm be Smallville? I thought Superboy didn't know Superman's identity since in Targets the suggestion of the name Kent made them think of Dr. Fate and not Clark Kent. I confused again...

2- I noticed the dates of the missions have been promptly kept up with and I was wondering does this mean there will an episode in the future showing the team celebrating the holidays?

3- I noticed since Wolf hit the scenes, we haven't seen the Sphere. Do they get along?

4- Miss Martian is in cheerleading, does that mean Superboy will be participating in any extra-school activities or sports?

5- What's the martian bioship's weight capacity?

6- With 10 episodes left of season 1, will be seeing any headway (instead of glares+ignoring) in the Superman + Superboy relation status before season 2?

Thanks SO much for your time. If you can answer any one of these I will be so very happy! ^_^

A few questions on Red Tornado's family...I knew next to nothing about the characters until they showed up on Young Justice so I turned to Wikipedia and Comicvine and have a few question. It seems Red Torpedo and Firebrand were Golden Age Quality Comics properties that got bought in total by DC. The reappeared in the 80s but set in their original WWII and shortly after time period.
1. Do you have rough ideas of their heroic days in the YJ universe?
If so...
2. Red Torpedo seemed to have founded some scientist paradise floating city after his heroing days. In the cartoon continuity did he die instead?
3. The original Firebrand was a rich man without superpowers. When he was brought back in the 80's he was injured (or killed?) and his sister who had or was soon to have superpowers discovered his secret and took over the identity. In the YJ version is she the original Firebrand, or is she also in some way sister to the first one with a similar backstory?
4. Assuming wiki is correct- she also had cocustody of her late ex fiance's daughter (mother of Atom Smasher) and later was killed, along with her husband by a supervillain. In the YJ continuity did she have the daughter and/or husband?
5. I missed it while watching the episode, but comments refer to the flashback of her death set at the 1939 World's Fair. Was she a pre-WWII hero in the YJ continuity instead of a WWII era one as in the orignal comics?
6. Last question- a plain old in reference to the episode question: Did the JLA make any sort of announcement about their deaths fighting Red Volcano? Or any sort of Public or private memorial? There were no bodies to bury, but they did deserve honors. And, though elderly, there would seem to be folks around who would still remember the 'beloved' Firebrand.

Greg responds...

3. Red Inferno was the second Firebrand. As to her connection to the first: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

4. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

5. Actually, there was some understandable confusion there. Her "death" took place at the SITE of the 1939 World's Fair - which was also the headquarters of the All-Star Squadron - but it actually happened in 1945.

6. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

1. Where were Hal Jordan and Wonder Woman in Revelations, and why didn't the Flash appear with the rest of the Justice League when they confronted the Injustice League?
2. Do all magic users speak the same language when they use magic or does is vary from person to person.
3. How strong is Superman?

Greg responds...

1a. Busy.

1b. Are you sure he didn't appear? I don't have the episode in front of me to check, but I really thought he did.

2. It varies.

3. Strong.

just quick questions I thought I might ask ^^
1.When you guy are making the story of Young Justice do you already have the entire story done episode to episode or do you just have the major plot points and some extra stuff?
2. Do you get annoyed with all of the questions towards Young Justice.
3. (im half expecting no comment) Why did you choose to make Miss Martian a green martian instead of white like she is in the comics?
4. In episode 15 of young justice does Zatanna actually say something backwards?

Greg responds...

1. Uh... all of the above.

2. Not all of them, no. Just the ones that ask for spoilers or repeat questions already asked and answered.

3. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

4. Yes.

The Light has 7 members who are now all revealed. However in Drop-Zone when the Light was seen there was 9 screens. Were a few Injustice League members sitting in on the report? As the episode was about Kobra Venom and when they made their appearance they were using Kobra Venom for the plant monster.

Or was it just a case of the Light having multiple screens on?

Greg responds...

Uh... sure. (Cuz, there's like no way it could have been an animation error, right?)

I have three questions.
1. You said that the Flash family do not get their super speed from the speed force but in the comics it is stated that it exists in every universe. Since Young Justice exists in Earth 16 wouldn't the speed force exist there as well being part of the DC multiverse? I got this from the Flash Rebirth.
2.Why are there three green lanterns on earth? Officially there should be only one or two lanterns to a sector why is Guy Gardner there?
3.How did Professor Ivo get captured? Will this be revealed in the show or in the comic book?
Thank you for your time.

Greg responds...

1. Again, the denizens of Earth-16 have never heard of the Speed-Force. If it makes you happy to think it exists anyway, I'm fine with that.

2. So you know the rules for the Green Lantern Corps in Universe-16, huh?

3. Neither, actually. The League caught him. And since the League is the focus of neither the show or the book, we won't be showing it. (I got a lot of flack from fans just for doing a Batman/Robin adventure in issue #11, because the rest of the Team only cameo'd in it. Imagine the flack I'd get if I showed a JL adventure with NO teens in it.) Someday, I'd love to do a comic book entitled "EARTH-16" that would give me the freedom to cover all sorts of stories set in this universe, but of course, it's not up to me.

'Humanity' was phenomenal!

I know you've written a few Young Justice episodes so far, do you have characters you particularly (emphasis on particularly) enjoy writing for (ex. Dialogue)? Or ones you find difficult to write for?

Greg responds...

I can honestly say after two seasons that there's no one I dislike writing for.

And I don't generally have favorites, cuz they're all great and fun to write for.

But I have to admit that there's one character who is particularly a gas to write. He's introduced in the first episode of Season Two, so I'm not going to say whom it is now. But if you ask me again after 201 has aired, I'll let you know.

In "Cloud Fathers", Xanatos makes his famous quip to Goliath and Angela about how his acid trap that will spill over them and the Coyote Carving is "my first real stab at cliched villainy".

Recently, I realized that in Xanatos' next appearance in "Gargoyles", "Future Tense" (if that one counts, since the Xanatos in that episode was a deception twice over), he displayed a *lot* of cliched villainy (openly taking over New York, turning most of the population into Mutates, planning world domination, etc.). I don't know if that line in "Cloud Fathers" was intended as a foreshadowing, but it became all the more fun after I thought of it in connection with "Future Tense".

Greg responds...

If it's fun... then we all win!

Young Justice is my current obsession! (It feeds my inner comic geek. :)) I can't wait for more episodes!

1.) I believe you've confirmed that Beast Boy will be appearing in Young Justice. Can you disclose his age?

2.) How old is KIller Frost?

3.) How old is Edward Nygma?

4.) In Robin's profile on Cartoon Network they call him "Immature". This confuses me slightly; he's certainly mischievous, but on the other hand he is, arguably, the most intelligent, has the most experience, gets along well with adults, even Batman (Mr. Know it All) respects his opinion. So, is he dubbed "immature" because of his rather impish nature? Or something else I've failed notice?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. I've confirmed nothing of the sort.

2. Twenty-seven.

3. Thirty.

4. I won't take responsibility for promotional materials.

Although I DID write the bios on the back of the Mattel Young Justice Action Figures!!

Love the show. Brilliant writing, plot/character development, animation - probably the number one animated show on TV right now in my opinion.

I also really appreciate that you've made the characters very realistic and relatable - love that you're not ignoring their sexuality and are exploring what that means for the team (i.e. Miss Martian and Superboy). Such a fundamental part of growing up and I always get annoyed when other animated shows pretend that teenagers don't have to deal with those issues. Artemis' line in Humanity about feeling naked and not in a fun way cracked me up. Definitely fit her character (and age) - really glad S&P didn't ask you guys to chuck that one.

On a different note, if Young Justice ended up staying on air for many, many seasons (10, 20, or you know, forever - you have some very dedicated fans, let's make it happen) do you think you'd ever consider exploring what these characters would be like when they finally branch out on their own (i.e. Robin becoming Nightwing, etc...)? Or do you think that would take away from the fundamental aspect(s) of Young Justice? Basically, I'm just curious what kind of reality you see this show existing in. Is it something a la Family Guy/Simpsons (where none of the characters ever really age) or (given enough air time) would we eventually see their pre-established evolution (or any variance you came up with)?

Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for your time and for creating such a kick-butt show!

Greg responds...

Time will pass on the series realistically, with characters aging appropriately. BUT...

Keep in mind that the entire first season takes place over a single six month period. (Despite the fact that it will take way longer than that to air.) And Season Two likewise takes place over a six month period.

Timestamps can be used to track how much time has passed in the world of the series. But obviously, you aren't going to see our characters age significantly between, say episode 118 and 119.

Love the work you're doing on Young Justice so far. Really enjoying the detail the animators are putting into the animation (i.e persistent mud on heroes) and your usage of macguffin plot items to damn good effect (Helmet of Fate in Revelations). Seriously, kudos to you for having the heroes actually use the gamebreaking artefact they have stored away in their trophy room. Heaven knows there're enough shows in circulation now which wouldn't dare do the same.

Question;

Was the recent reference by Red Volcano to "Meatbags" a HK-47 Star Wars reference or simply a general anti-human robot thing?

Greg responds...

I don't know what HK-47 is, so I'm guesing no.

I've seen and enjoyed Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back many times. I probably saw Return of the Jedi twice, maybe three times. I've seen Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones once each. I never did get around to seeing Revenge of the Sith.

Is there any possibility and/or talk of a Young Justice live action movie? (If this has already been asked, I apologize - I searched the archives and did not get any hits.)

Possibility? I suppose. I mean, anything's possible, right? Talk? None that I'm aware of, unless this counts.

Love Young Justice!

1. Are the following alias' and real names accurate for Earth-16?:
Wildcat - Ted Grant
Sandman - Wesley Dodds
Green Lantern - Alan Scott

2. How old is Topo and what exactly is his species?

Thanks so much!

Greg responds...

1. Yeah.

2. Topo is thirteen, and he's an Atlantean. For more on that and him, see issues #14 and 15 of the Young Justice companion comic.

Me and my friends have been having gargoyles marathon and I was wondering why the DVDs stop after season 2 volume 1 I mean, I couldn't even purchase a digital file. This is very grievous because I now only own 1 episode with an appearance from Puck, you can see how this is depressing.

Greg responds...

I can indeed. But the answer to your question is stated and restated ad nauseum in the ASK GREG ARCHIVES in the "Gargoyles DVD" section. Check there.
