YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION: EPISODE 202 "Earthlings" Premieres this Saturday morning on Cartoon Network with a repeat Sunday morning. Check local listings for times.

ASK GREG UPDATE - VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
There is a NEWLY revised intro page at ASK GREG, and more importantly, a newly revised "GUIDELINES FOR ASKING A QUESTION" page. What's on it is SO important, I'm going to copy it below. But first a WARNING. In ONE WEEK'S TIME, I am going to authorize the moderators to go through the EXISTING QUEUE and retroactively apply these guidelines, DELETING any and every post that breaks even one of the guidelines. That's right, RETROACTIVELY.
I can justify this for a number of reasons:
1. NONE of these guidelines are actually new. This is the first time they've been gathered together on the question asking page, but I've been pleading for people to follow all of these guidelines for OVER A YEAR. So by now, anyone who spends even a little time at the site should be aware of them.
2. I'm giving folks a FULL WEEK to retrieve their non-guideline posts and RE-POST them PER THE GUIDELINES. Our biggest problem recently seems to be with folks who are hit and run posters, more interested in being able to post questions then in actually getting timely answers of any substance. Those folks may return in a few months (or whatever) to find their posts deleted, but anyone who's a regular here has plenty of time to correct their mistakes.
3. The queue currently has over a thousand questions and is still growing. No one's going to get ANY timely answers if something isn't done.
Please, keep in mind that (a) I take no pleasure in being this draconian and (b) this is WAY less draconian than it might be. Heck, their are fans advocating that I SHUT THE SITE DOWN entirely, which, frankly, is still an option on the table.
So please, read the following guidelines CAREFULLY. Reread your existing posts - or any new posts you might make - and confirm for yourself whether or not ANY ASPECT of your post busts a guideline. Because if even one little rule is broken, your ENTIRE post will be deleted mercilessly. (Feel free to ask for advice from the moderators at the Station 8 Comment Room, as to whether or not your post is within the guidelines and/or what you can do to get it guideline-safe.) Repost your question, if necessary. I realize that if you're near the front of the queue with a semi-non-legit post, it'll be frustrating to have to go to the back of the line, but keep in mind that in one week, the line is about to get WAY SHORTER, because nearly EVERY post breaks one or more guidelines.
GUIDELINES FOR ASKING A QUESTION
1. DO NOT REQUEST SPOILERS! All requests for spoilers will be met with "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT." or DELETION. Prefacing your spoiler request question by saying, "I hope this doesn't trigger a spoiler alert" or the like doesn't help. Think before you post. If you're asking for information about what is to come on a show, it's a spoiler. And Greg flat out will not answer. So all you're doing is clogging the queue.
2. Search the archives to make sure your question hasn't already been answered. Any question already answered will receive an "ASKED AND ANSWERED" response or be DELETED. Again, this only serves to clog the queue.
3. Check the unanswered questions queue before posting your question. It may not yet be answered, but if you can see that someone's already asked the question, then there's no point in asking it again. All you'll receive is another "ASKED AND ANSWERED" response or the post will be DELETED.
4. Consider asking your question from knowledgeable fans before posting it. For example, the folks at http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/comment/ are very knowledgeable and can usually answer questions much faster than Ask Greg. The Gargoyles Wiki, the Young Justice Wiki, and the Station Eight FAQ are excellent sources of information as well and may contain the answers to your questions.
5. Please refrain from asking questions - even non-spoiler questions - that it seems obvious will be answered by the end of the season. One of the reasons the queue is so long is because it's filled with questions that have already been answered by subsequent episodes, even questions that one would reasonably assume would be answered by subsequent episodes. If at the end of the season, your questions still aren't answered, THAT is the time to ask them. Until then, your post risks DELETION.
6. If you are asking multiple questions in one post, please number your questions. And if you're asking more than five questions then create a separate post. But please, do NOT flood the queue. Show restraint or risk DELETION.
7. Please do not submit any original ideas, notions, concepts, or drawings of original characters. No stories, no fanfic, no teleplays, nothing. Anything like this will automatically be DELETED.
8. No original ideas masquerading as questions. Asking what Demona did during World War II is fine. Asking if Demona tried to assassinate Hitler during World War II is an idea masquerading as a question and is not all right. Again: automatic DELETION.
9. No requests for employment. If you want to ask generally about how one might break into the business, Greg will try to give his perspective, but this is not an appropriate forum for personal pleas for work and as such will be DELETED.
10. Please make separate posts for each topic you want to address or ask questions about. If you have 3 or so questions about one topic (for example, Oberon) you may post them together. But if you wish to ask about multiple topics (for example, Oberon AND Goliath and Elisa's relationship) please make separate posts for each topic or risk DELETION.
11. Please keep the language clean. This is more or less a PG website. Anything beyond the occasional 'damn' will result in your entire post being DELETED.
12. Rudeness is not appreciated. You don't have to like Greg's stuff. And negative comments are perfectly legitimate and will not be deleted simply for being negative. But that can be done without being rude or abusive. Keep it civil or risk DELETION.
13. Please do not bother making comments worded in such a way that they, in essence, CHALLENGE Greg to acknowledge how right those comments are about their criticisms of the program. Here’s the thing...you do NOT have to agree with Greg's creative choices, but aside from a few objective mistakes that he has ALWAYS been willing to acknowledge, you have to understand that if Greg and his creative partners put something in the series, the odds are THEY LIKE IT. YOU are NOT going to convince GREG that, for example, “Hello, Megan!†or Robin’s laugh or Superman’s response to Superboy or Wally’s flirting is bad for the show. Feel free to tell him you don’t care for these (or other) things, but stop phrasing these COMMENTS as questions or challenges. It grates. Any question that falls into this category will at best be answered with a: “WE LIKE OUR SHOW.†and in fact risks DELETION.
*PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW ALL GUIDELINES CAREFULLY*
Breaking any of these guidelines may result in DELETION. This means, for example, that if you ask four legitimate questions, but your fifth question does not follow even one of the guidelines, your ENTIRE POST may be DELETED. (Are you sensing a theme?)
Once a post is deleted, there is no cache where it is saved. There is no appeal. You can go to the S8 Comment Room and ask a moderator WHY the post was deleted FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, i.e. so that future posts will better observe the guidelines and hopefully not be deleted. But the moderator cannot reinstate your post. Also, keep in mind that sometimes the moderators delete posts. Sometimes Greg does, in which case the moderator may not be able to explain the decision. The moderators are merely following Greg's guidelines. Greg can delete a post on a whim.
In case it isn't clear, I'm not actually (let alone actively) trying to alienate fans. I wouldn't do ASK GREG at all if that were the case. But the system has been so terribly abused, that I feel it's this or we shut it down.

I recently saw this line from an interview with Steven Bochco in the early 80's, talking about Hill Street Blues (which currently has its first two-and-a-half seasons on Hulu Plus, by the way):
"Maybe the biggest problem with Hill Street, in terms of popular success, is that it is a show that demands to be watched. And most people do not watch television. They simply are in its presence."
I love that quote. What an insightful way to encapsulate about what was essential and great about Hill Street Blues, without going into all the details of what made it so outstanding. Just leave at this: unlike nearly anything before it, in many ways it was a show that demanded to be watched. I think that characteristic also applies to Gargoyles as well, no doubt due to the major influence Hill Street Blues had on the show (as you've often mentioned).
Nowadays, that quality, of being a show that "demands to be watched," is characteristic of so many excellent shows that appear on HBO, Showtime or AMC (before hitting DVD boxsets and iTunes), places where popular success isn't the one and only yardstick. And again and again, we've seen how this kind of series can flourish in the atmosphere of creative freedom offered by these outlets.
Can viewers hope that someday soon, that kind of environment will produce an animated serial drama that has the same level of quality, complexity and acclaim as these channels' current headline series? If so, what might it take for that to happen?

Hey, Zach. Long time no see. I'd heard that quotation about Hill Street before, and couldn't agree more.
I appreciate you think Gargoyles falls in the same category. It's flattering and certainly what we strived for. I don't pretend that we were as good as Hill Street Blues, but no one can accuse us of not going for it.
As to your question, I like to think that W.I.T.C.H., Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice and Young Justice: Invasion also qualify. At least at Gargoyles' level. So I think it's already possible. But that's just my - apparently not so - humble opinion.

1. In Misplaced I noticed that Wotan's magic was red when it was orange in Revelation. Not to nitpick but was he harnessing the power of chaos instead of the magic he normally uses?
2. When Martian Manhunter uses telekinesis to enhance his strength is he the same level as some of the heavy hitters of the league or is he closer to Aquaman's strength level? I don't like to ask who is stronger then who I am just trying to find out what is Aquaman's combat prowess in the league is.

1. Don't ask the color deficient guy.
2. Combat prowess and raw strength are two different things. Superman's the strongest of the Leaguers. Icon, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are up there. Aquaman and a telekinetically enhanced Martian Manhunter and a Quantum-energized Captain Atom are close. I'd put Red Tornado, Hawkman and Hawkwoman just behind them. Neither Flash nor Plastic Man nor Zatanna nor Atom have super-strength, but their powers can sometimes give them more oomph. At the "bottom" are folks like Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Rocket, though of course, they're all way stronger because of their training than the average human being. And of course, you have the Green Lanterns, who can use willpower and rings to mimic strength too - and maybe even top Superman when they're on their game. Same - in his own way - with Doctor Fate. I think that covers the whole League.

I am really off my game in asking questions or writing them anyway. Why is it that when Wotan casts magic some of it is nonverbal and other times he uses Latin to cast them?(SUCCESS!) For example in Revelation he summons lightning against the team without speaking, but when he fights Doctor Fate he uses several incantations.

Actually, Wotan did speak to summon the lightning in Revelations, using the Archmage's old spell, in fact.
But in any case, Wotan has many tools in his toolbox.

Just wanted to put it out there. I thought it interesting that although Zatanna and Zatara are probably Catholic, they practice magic. If you want to get technical, the Catholic Church is against the use of magic. (I am Catholic)
But I know this is a fictional story, so the rules can probably be bent a bit :)

First, I just have to say this is most definitely the best DCAU show since Justice League Unlimited finished. There's something in it for everybody; there's just two questions I've got for you...
1) Is Wally eventually going to learn to be more imaginative with his powers? When they amount to being able to "Run really, really fast", it's really easy for him to turn into just another comic relief.
On another note, I really like what you're doing so far with Superman being extremely awkward around Superboy and so far being a terrible role model... it kind-of really fits him, IMO. And, on a related note to that, my second question: Are we ever going to see the Kents in this show?

I'm not sure I remember, but there were a handful of actresses who auditioned for Miss Martian (including Lacey, Mae and maybe Alyson) who didn't seem quite right for M'gann, but who were really good nevertheless and whom we kept in mind for future rolls.

What did you think of the latest season of Dexter ? Did you enjoy it? [Spoiler]Unfortunately, I read an online review after the first episode aired where the reviewer suggested that the Dr. Geller wasn't alive so that ruined the big reveal later in the season.[/Spoiler] I wish I was able to watch the show not knowing what I had read. I might have enjoyed the season more if I had figured it out on my own.
I was happy that they were tackling Dexter's issue with religion and I thought that the character of Brother Sam was a good method to do it since the show kept me guessing whether he was a good or bad. I didn't enjoy the whole Doomsday killer due to being spoiled, but I did like that his name was Travis Marshall. (I like Gargoyle's Travis Marshall better.)
I read that a lot of people were bothered by the way that Debra/Dexter were handled this season. I didn't mind it, but I don't think it was needed. Will her "increased" feelings really be a factor proceeding the events of the finale? I look forward to finding out.
Good luck with rest of Season 1 and Season 2 of Young Justice. I'll be watching. Take care.

In “Targets†the peace conferences or negotiations between North and South Rhelasia were being held in Taipei. However, few countries â€"and no countries in Asia- have diplomatic relations with Taiwan (the Republic of China) due to pressure from mainland China (the People’s Republic of China). And since I’m pretty sure the Rhelasias would have to have diplomatic relations with the ROC in order to hold the talks there, I was wondering if this was accounted for while writing the episode. Were these politics considered?
Of course, this isn’t really important to the episode and you can always just say that on Earth 16 the ROC has wide diplomatic recognition.
I also noticed that Taipei has been used for several scenes since "Targets," most recently in "Misplaced" when the team is broadcasting a message to the children of the world. Was Taipei used again to create a sense of resonance between episodes? Was it so you could reuse some material -such as a background- to keep the budget down? Or for a different reason entirely?

Matt - No. I'm not sure I follow your logic either. What the Rhelasians required was neutral turf. Taipei provided that. If we got the politics wrong, I'll take responsibility - but also run right over and say the politics of Earth-16 may be different from what you're used to.
As for its reuse, it's a combination of both your stated reasons, with perhaps a slight emphasis on budget.

Klarion, Brain, Luthor and Ra's have an episode to themselves. Apparantly Queen Bee's is coming soon. I bet Vandal Savage is saved for last. But what about Aquaman's main enemy; Ocean Master? Apart from hiring Black Manta, he hasn't had a major episode yet. I was wondering when he'll show up!

Wow! I can't believe I finally got in at the right time! I live in Australia, so I can never post a question...unless it is at a time like this...when our two times just happen to be perfect!
First off, I would just like to say; I love Young Justice. I know you must get that a lot, but I truly am obsessed! So obsessed, I have even managed to obsess several of my friends! To the point of obsession, that my parents worry, and that's saying something.
The long awaited episode 19 was remarkable! I loved the story line/plot, and everything was just great! As usual, of course! :)
I don't want to trigger spoilers of anything of the sort, and I've scoured the archive sin search of my questions...but, hopefully this question hasn't been asked.
1. When will Wally West get his cast off? I aplogize if this is a spoiler, but It was just a wonder.
2. In the comics, don't the Flashes all pretty much have super healing? If so...why doesn't Wally in the show? If he did, wouldn't his cast be off already?
3. I read the summary for Episode 20. And. WALLY WEST (my fave character) IS GONNA BE 16...which means...he'll be just that more awesome. Really, trying to get to the point, what will the date for his birthday be? The last episode finished sometime in November (though i forget when *face-palm*). Or is this one of these obviously, wait and see questions?
4. I read that the last episode of Season 1 (Auld Acquaintance) will have the date of December 31st! Is this true?
5. What style of art is the show drawn in? Or, how would you describe the style of art?
I seriously, have like a list of a hundred things I'd like to ask you...but, you're a busy man! So i'll let you move on! Maybe next time?
I understand If you can't answer the questions. I would hate for the show to be spoilt too! One of the pluses of living down under- it takes hours to find out info about the show- most of which Is from random sites and is never true! Its one huge, randomistic (? I am aware this isn't a word) adventure!

1. Well, Sophie, of course it WAS a spoiler. And by now, you probably know that it came off in episode 120, "Coldhearted". I don't mean to single you out, but this is a perfect example of a question that didn't need asking, as the episodes themselves answered it LONG before it reached me in the massive queue. In fact, nearly ALL your questions fall into that category.
2. As stated many times before, just because it's true in the - since rebooted - mainstream DC Universe, you cannot assume it's true on the series. Base your assumptions on what you see ON THE SERIES. Not on past interpretations.
3. Yeah, it is. A little patience - given our timestamps - would have OBVIOUSLY provided this info. (November 11.)

Dear sir, I love the interactions between the characters and the friendship that the team displays. I especially love Dick and Wally's chemistry, they were my favourite characters in the old comics, and their friendship has transcended many decades, reboots and adaptions. Dick and Wally haven't been seen together much in animated adaptions so it's great to see them as best buds again in YJ.
What I'd like to know, is if maybe an episode or tie-in comic issue will tell the story in detail of Wally, Dick, Kaldur and Roy's meeting eachother, and how they became friends?

Young Justice is the finest cartoon I've seen in years, and the best DC Comics adaptation I've ever seen. I'd also like to thank you on having something like this Ask section. Hey greg what's up I would love to ask you a questions regarding your story telling techniques
You have said in the past that you could go be telling stories forever if you wanted and in fact sometimes not even the tv show is enough for them hence the comics.
But have you ever considered in giving your characters and stories a Grand finale?.
I think something that has made me a bit sad is that in your past shows you have been cut short due to executive decitions out of your control and we have been unable to get anything resembling an ending that actually gives closure (w.i.t.c.h,Spectacular spiderman, gargoyles etc)
However it is always nice when a tv show character directly says goodbye to te audience(like batman the brave and the bold) or when every major plot point is solved at the end.
A big trait of western media in it's majority like tv shows and specially comics is that the characters "are frozen in time".
Spiderman for instance will always be a young man that fights crime and the story won't go beyond that,same for superman and batman. When the story gets after a certain point we as fans tend to get reboots reapeaing the smae story.
I would like to ask you if given the chance will you give us a finale to your works like gargoyles.
Will we ever see the closure of them?
Do you believe in "grand finales"?
Or do you want simply to never give them a real ending o your shows and simply give the idea that the story will be around forever?

Yeah, I'm not so much into Grand Finales. Probably why I'm more of a television or comic book guy than a movie or graphic novel guy. I believe (whole-heartedly) in the on-going story. That's what LIFE feels like to me.
Gargoyles is a perfect example. Characters come; characters go and some even die, but the world goes on. I even know (but don't ask) how Goliath dies, but I don't see it as the end of that world. It's only A FINALE, because there is no THE FINALE.
I suppose if one was writing a story with a single lead, a la Spider-Man, and either (a) one killed him off or (b) one really ran out of stories to tell, then I could see staging that big Grand F before you waved goodbye forever. But that assumes there isn't a new Spider-Man waiting in the wings and/or that a guy like me would actually run out of stories. And that hasn't happened to me, at least not yet.

Mr. Weisman, you've explained your rationale about Zatanna, but why is Barbara Gordon so young? In the original comics, she was in her twenties while Dick was a teenager. She was old enough to work as a librarian, a job which usually requires a college degree, and she was living independently. If nothing else, the fact that she was eventually elected to Congress demonstrates that she was at least twenty-five, since that's the Constitutional requirement for members of the House of Representatives. Is there a reason why she's so young in Earth-16?

In the ORIGINAL COMICS, Dick was Robin for decades before Barbara Gordon came on the scene. DECADES. Putting her ahead of him, age-wise, never made much sense to me. They feel like contemporaries. (Even the original Bat-Girl, Betty Kane, was Robin's contemporary.) Brandon and the folks at DC agreed, so that's what we did. The age disparity is preserved a bit in her relationship to Tim in YJ:I. And that feels more natural to me.
As for her being a congresswoman when she gets older - nothing precludes that. If we ever get that far. (Maybe we'll do a time skip.) :)

Hi Greg, thanks for taking your time to answers questions about your shows, im sure I speak for everyone when I say it's great to have that communication w someone who is in charge of something I love so much. I just have a couple quick questions for you, which hopefully havent been answered yet. I've seen you sort of touch them a bit but not a specific answer yet.
You say that you Chose Dick and Wally to join the Young Justice team because they were the first incarnations to don their respective titles. My question is, being that that's the case, what made you choose Kaldur to helm the title of Aqualad rather than Garth, who was the original in the comics? Was it based soley on a desire for diversity on the team, or was it because you wanted to elaborate on your orignal ideas for the character of Kaldur?
If it was a desire for diversity, I've noticed you used the Brain and Monsieur Mallah as villains in the show (who were gay in the comics). My question is would you consider putting a gay character on the TEAM roster? Maybe Bunker from the current teen titans lineup, or even creating a new one much like you did with Kaldur (whom I love).
hopefully I didn't come off arrogant, I just had to ask those, and tell you how much I love the show and hope it continues to thrive. keep up the good work!!

1. It was a combination of factors, including diversity. We also had an opportunity to create an origin cleanly with Kaldur, and really point up the alternate universeness of Earth-16, by showing the "path not taken" by Garth in it. We also had freedom, since Garth was (at the time, at least) deceased in the DCU. Compare that to Robin, for example. Tim's origin makes no sense if Dick didn't come first. NO SENSE.

You've said before that you like to partake in mental casting for characters that you never got to animate in Gargoyles. Did you do this as well for Spectacular Spider-Man's unmade third season, and if so, any chance you could tell me what voice actors you had in mind for the new characters?

Well, Marina Sirtis for Emily Osborn. I can't think of any others off the top of my head. And mostly, I don't do that 'mental casting' until after I've written (or edited) a script, so that I have a character's 'voice' in my head. Since we never wrote any scripts, I probably didn't pre-cast much.

It's me once again. I've got a new set of questions that came up on my mind today.
1. After the Justice League was formed in 2003, what circumstances led the other nine members to join during the following seven years? I know you might not like to get into big details (or perhaps, there are details that you might have already given), but I’m interested to know because the circumstances were probably different for each member. Also, why were these particular heroes made official Justice League members and not anyone else? Hopefully, there should be an in-universe explanation for this.
2. You have mentioned that both Vandal Savage and Ra’s al Ghul were both heroes at one point in their lives, although I don’t what they did to be recognized as such. If that were true, then what exactly happened to make them walk away from that and become the villains that we, the fans, know in the present?
3. According to a response to someone’s posting, Hawkman and Hawkwoman’s names are Katar Hol and Shayera Thal respectively. Now assuming they reincarnate every time they die on Earth-16, shouldn’t their names be Carter Hall and Shiera Sanders Hall respectively in the present day or is there an in-universe explanation for the name change? Honestly, I think I might be getting myself confused here…
4. I’ve come to understand that the theme of Season One of Young Justice is about secrets and lies. I’ve also read the preview summaries of all the episodes that appear on the month of March. Based on everything I’ve read, am I correct to assume that The Team must overcome ALL secrets and lies they are keeping from each other in order to become stronger (both individually and as a team) and face whatever comes their way in the Season One Finale and in Season Two? You probably might not answer this question, but in my opinion, that is what I believe. What do you think about it?
5. Not including the legal reasons (or whatever reason you may have), is there an Earth-16 in-universe explanation as to why certain DC characters/teams will not/have not appeared on the show/comic? For example, is the in-universe reason a team such as Justice League International has not been established on Earth-16 because the original Justice League is a recent superhero team (lasting for seven years and still going), and therefore the United Nations would have no need for the establishment of the JLI because the circumstances normally involved in its establishment have not yet occurred?

1. Of course, there's an in-universe explanation. But these are stories your asking for. And this isn't the forum where I'm going to tell stories.
2. They don't consider themselves villains now.

5. It is what it is. Don't look to the traditional DC Universe - since rebooted - and make assumptions.

Three questions representative of the split and merging of worlds in "Misplaced":
Where was Wolf? Was he on the world of adults, the world of kids, both, or neither?
When the worlds merged again, what happened to the airplane? Did it end up crashed in the ocean because it lost its pilot mid-flight, or is it still safely parked at the airport because it never took off?
If Zatarra had donned the Helm of Fate while the worlds were still split (and while Zatanna was wearing the helm in the world without grown-ups), would Nabu have ended up possessing both of them? And what would have happened when the worlds merged again?
