Thanks for taking the time for our questions! I was just watching "The New Olympians" episode of Gargoyles and as the camera pans the city there is a satellite dish on one of the buildings. I understand if you don't have an answer, but are they receiving signals from our (human's) satellites or do they have one of their own?

Greg responds...

I don't recall. Sorry.

While I was watching "Image," my jaw dropped. Over a week later, and I have yet to pick it up off the floor. I'd like to chime in with the other commenters on how well this episode works as a metaphor for being a trans person, and the fears and issues that anyone who is in the closet about their gender, identity, sexuality, etc, has to face and work through. That alone has bumped this episode up to second place on my favorites list. (With Bereft still holding the number one spot!) And has also solidified why M'gann is my favorite character in the series.

I love how M'gann's white martian form looks like an actual alien, and isn't sexualized (or even all that humanoid!) in the slightest. I love that her natural form defies the usual science fiction convention of green skinned space babes, and lacks any female characteristics. While I like the reptilian, xenomorph-ish design in the comics, I'd have to say this version wins out.

How on earth did you and the art team come up with such a great design that doesn't look like it's from earth?

Greg responds...

I give full credit to Phil Bourassa and Brandon Vietti on this. I'm just the dopey writer who gets to be impressed by these guys' work all the time.

One more question. In Agendas, Batman said he knew that Captain Marvel was actually a kid. Was that because Billy told him or because Batman investigated Marvel?

Greg responds...

The latter. Billy/CM didn't know Batman knew.

Greetings Greg!

I fully enjoy each and every episode of YJ, "Agendas" having just aired yesterday.

It did prompt a question or two which I hope do not qualify as spoilers.

1. Given that Batman is "The World's Greatest Detective," and claims he knew about Captain Marvel's secret Identity the whole time (I have no reason to believe he didn't, he is that good after all), Are there other members of the league (or other superheros on the level of the league) who have not shared their secret identity, but Batman already knows their secret. (I am only hoping for a yes or no and would not ask you to provide a list.)

2. From what we saw for the JL's membership procedures, it seems to be almost completely democratic (I hope I did not misinterpret). Each member gets to vote on each issue, each potential member/member under review, etc, even those issues where a member is concerned (IE renewing Dr. Fate and Captain Marvel's membership status). My question is: when Batman was elected as head of the JL, did he vote for himself, or not?

Thank you for taking the time to Answer the questions you do.

Greg responds...

1. Yes, Batman knows the secret identities of everyone in the League. They do not all know that he knows.

2. I'm sure he would have. Though I'm not sure there was a formal vote for individual members when it came to the seven founders.

Greg responds...

1. During Season One, quite solid. During Season Two, they're estranged - to protect them.

2. Not particularly.

3. Probably there was, before he (seemingly) betrayed the kingdom.

4. Not particularly.

5. Good.

Oh no! Not only was Superman dna stolen...but by Lex Luthor!!!!! And there is more than one clone! Poor Superman. It is awful when you think about it.People keep giving him a hard time but this was almost like rape.He is by far the victim in all this. I hope this is not used as a plot device for Superboy story but acknowledged and handled sensitively for Superman's sake and the sake on any person who has been violated. And it must be me, but Captain Marvel in the JL disturbs me. He IS a kid in a man's body. I cannot see how Batman can find no issues with it. Are they really going to have him sitting there while they could be discussing things that are not age appropriate? Interesting Batman can just wave his hand at everybody and tell them how right he is and how wrong they are to question him.

Greg responds...

I wouldn't say that Batman is doing that at all. Clearly, he'd personally vote to keep Cap in the League. But he's not even advocating that the others agree with him, and I don't know where you get the idea that he's being superior about it. I think that must be baggage you're bringing to the scene, cuz there's nothing there to justify what you're suggesting in the actual episode.

Since, by this time, we know Cap stayed with the League, a majority must have voted for him to stay.

Not a question, but rather some praise. I seriously love "Young Justice". I think it's an absolutely brilliant show and I like how each episode gets better and better every time. Character development and interactions have been very enjoyable, the plots are engaging, I love all the voice talents chosen for each role, the animation is outstanding... All in all, it's amazing.

Right now, I'm waiting for "Insecurity" to air this Saturday and I'm positively anxious to watch "Performance" the Saturday that follows. I almost can't stand the wait, actually, but I'm being strong! (Fingers crossed for no more hiatuses from CN, too~ XP)

So I just wanted to say thanks to you, Brandon and everyone else involved for giving me a series to love and a good reason to enjoy weekends just a bit more. Cheers!

Greg responds...

You're very welcome. Of course, we're on summer hiatus now, but you got 15 straight episodes first, and a lot of series go on hiatus for the summer, so I hope we're forgiven and that you'll be back with us in the fall.

Wow! 'Agendas' was fantastic!

1. You've said that Black Canary is your favorite (DC) character - do you have a favorite male character?
2. Were Match's irises blue or gray? I couldn't tell.
3. How old is the Atom?
4. What color are Talia Al Ghul's eyes?
5. Is the Atom in this series Ray Palmer?
6. This isn't really a question - I just wanted to say that I love your portrayal of Lex Luthor! He's very manipulative, but in this oddly charismatic way. Perfect for Luthor.

Thanks so much!

Greg responds...

1. Probably Captain Atom, though I'm a big Red Tornado fan too. And of course, I love our versions of Aqualad, Superboy, Robin/Nightwing, Kid Flash, etc. Heck, basically, I like all of 'em. Male and female, young and old, heroes and villains and supporting.

2. I don't know. Weren't they white?

3. As of "Agendas", he was 35.

4. I don't know.

Hi Greg!! First let say,I love the series!! I was very excited to see the series return!! I have watched the first four installments since the series has returned, and have enjoyed them very much!!!That being said, my comments and questions are on the 17 March 2012 installment image. Miss Martian is my favorite character, i thought this installment was outstanding! Even those it was hard to see her in so much pain after seeing the vision of Superboy. I hoping this doesn't destroy her relationship with the team, especially her relationship with Superboy, i like them as a couple, i think their good for each other. I can understand why she's wouldn't reveal her true form.I'm pulling for her,i hope good things happen for her!! That not a spoiler request, just making a comment about what i hope for her,Again i'm really pulling for her!!
My questions
1. Does the manhunter have martain vision on this Earth??

2.Why was Superboy so surprised that Miss Martian based a lot of life on that sitcom " Hello megan" ?? When it seemed like he called her out on that in the Terrors episode.

Greg responds...

1. If you mean as some kind of additional power, then no.

2. Who said he was surprised?

1. Why was there a scene cut from Agendas? I mean the one where Superboy demands entrance into Project Cadmus.
2. What did Doctor Fate say after Superman was objecting to allowing underage children in the Justice League? It starts with "That seems....., but I cannot understand what he is saying.
3. Who voiced Hal Jordan and Hawkwoman in Agendas? Are they going to voiced by the same people or was this just a one time thing until others can found to voice them full time.

Greg responds...

1. The slot in the DC Nation block is shorter (to make room for the shorts) than our original timeslot was when we were an independent show. Something had to be cut.

2. "That seems myopic. I have been one with Kid Flash and Aqualad. Both are ready."

3. Neither are officially cast, but I believe that Danica was Hawkwoman and Dee Bradley Baker was Green Lantern (Hal). But unfortunately, my Season One scripts are boxed up at this moment, and I cannot double check.

Dear Greg,
So, today's episode; Wow... First off, great job with Match. The costume seemed inspired by his early appearances, but having him burn the S on his chest, at first reminding me of the affectioantely-named Emo-Prime, then reminded me of Match's later Bizarro-inspired appearances. Again, nicely done.
Other things I liked in this were the first mention of The Atom, very cool. Making Roy and Guardian family, also cool. And Hal & John's response to Guy joining the team of NO. Hillarious! On that note, nice voice casting with Maggie Q as Diana, she commanded such authority, nice job.

Please keep it up and pass my good tidings to the rest of the cast & crew.

Yeah, we all loved Maggie's Wonder Woman. And she was so much fun to work with too.

2. Guess it depends on Lex Luthor's blood type, but still I tend to think not, because Kryptonian blood would not be compatible with human.

Hi Greg, I want to know if you think Batman's response ( In Agendas) about why he trained Robin from age 9 really somehow justifies taking children into crime fighting. Because in my mind it does not. No matter how Batman ( or the writers) spin it. Taking in a teenager is very different to a child.

Greg responds...

Well, I guess it depends on which universe you're living in. In ours, I'd agree with you. On Earth-16, I think it's extreme, but I buy it.

Agendas was awesome. A few questions, though.

I'm assuming that Guardian is Jim Harper and that he's the younger brother of Red Arrow's biological dad (He did say Roy was his nephew, after all, and if it really is Jim, the shared surname would indicate a paternal relation). Is my assumption correct?

You said in response to an earlier question that Guardian was only 24 years old. If the above assumption is correct, was there a big age gap between Guardian and Roy's dad? Because I can't imagine a mere six year gap between uncle and nephew otherwise.

Does Roy know that he has an uncle?

On a happier note, congratulations to the cast of "Young Justice" for being nominated for "Best Vocal Cast in a Television Series" and "Best Male Vocal Performance in a Television Series in a Supporting Role" (Crispin Freeman- Roy Harper/Speedy/Red Arrow) at the BTVA awards. You guys certainly have my votes- though I figure that by the time you read this the voting process and the announcement of the awardees would be long over.

Greg responds...

Well, by now, you probably know that in fact Guardian/Jim Harper was NOT in fact Red Arrow's uncle. Instead, BOTH were clones of the original Roy Harper, i.e. Speedy. Guardian was force-grown to be older, but he also was cloned SECOND, so he's actually younger.

Red Arrow did believe for all of Season One that Guardian was his father's much younger brother.

I've never heard of the BTVA Awards and had no idea we were nominated? Did we win?

Agendas

Damn it, Greg! Please don't make me like Lex Luthor. You've already made me like Venom, stop doing this. Stop taking character that I consider to be lame and making them work for me! Okay, with that tangent out of the way, let's segue into my review.

It's been twenty episodes, and sixteen months since we last saw Project Cadmus. Ideally, we wouldn't have had the delays between episodes that we did, but that is hardly the fault of the show. Still, it was nice to see Superboy "return home" and face his past. This is the third episode in a row to focus on a specific member of The Team. Kid Flash got his episode, Miss Martian got her's. This week, it was Superboy's turn. As with the previous two episodes, this was one the character needed.

I know next to nothing about the DC Universe, but through pop cultural osmosis, I knew who Superboy's other dad was since shortly after the series got started. I thought Luthor was very effective in this episode, and I loved seeing him play the good dad. If I step back and pretend I don't know anything about Lex, his words near the end were frighteningly agreeable.

"Big Boy Blue lives in a world of black and white. You were created by the bad guys, so there must be something wrong with you. But we both know life isn't that clear cut, the real world is full of grays."

And he's right. Lex Luthor is right. I'm sure some Superfans are going to be disgusted with this, but it's true. Now, granted we all know Luthor is a very dark shade of gray, and he is using the truth for his own ends, but that doesn't make him wrong.

I also enjoyed Luthor's Xanatos Gambit. He used Superboy to discover the genomes, and bring them back under control. Smart. Practical. Smarter and practical than the DCAU version of Lex Luthor who threw a fit when something didn't go his way and always got his ass handed to him at the end. But what should I expect when you put Lex in the hands of the man who created David Xanatos. Luckily for all involved, I don't think Superboy is going to turn out to be like Thailog.

Loved finally seeing the Watchtower, and I loved this design. It was built into an asteroid, instead of just being an orbiting hunk of metal. Pretty cool. It was great seeing the Justice League get together and really seeing how they operate, and the disagreements among the team. Maggie Q is a great Wonder Woman, and I loved when she needled Batman for training Dick Grayson to be Robin at nine years old, and I loved it even more when Batman said he did it so Dick wouldn't end up like him.

Four home runs in a row, keep them coming.

Greg responds...

Thank you, Greg.

Hi Greg.
Loved Agendas. It was interesting to see the JLA's voting process regarding
new membership.
I have some questions related to that:
With the remarks about the importance of the membership decisions and that the JLA doesn't want to encourage the creation of another Injustice League, does the JLA
have a maximum amount of members? If so, is part of the reasoning to keep League decisions from becoming too unwieldy?
Wonder Woman's suggestion of expelling Captain Marvel took me by surprise. Is a
unanimous decision required to expel a member?
You mentioned in a response to a past question that Zatanna was previously deemed an authorized guest. Does this status have to be voted on as well?
Finally, it was good to see a glimpse of the Atom. Is Ray Palmer well-known by the general public to be a renowned scientist? Does the League factor into their decision his scientific knowledge?

Thanks for another great episode!

Greg responds...

1. Nope. Although as Superman stated, the option exists to vote no to all new members.

2. I don't think unwieldiness is a big concern. There's no rule that all Leaguers have to go on all missions.

3. Nope. Just a majority.

4. No.

5. By the GENERAL public... I kinda doubt it. But he's a leading physicist in his field. Many people would have heard of him.

6. Potentially. It'll certainly come in handy in Season Two. (WHOOPS!! SPOILER!!!)

It's carved out of an asteroid. Brandon has been planning to post the origins of the Watchtower on his blog, but I think he's too busy. Are we talking about in the world of the show or about the work of making it?

If the former, then she wasn't 'chosen'. She just lost the game first.

If the latter, then it was because we wanted others to react to her death and because we felt we had more interesting dilemmas to present by keeping others alive longer.

When Lex says to Superboy in "Agendas", the episode that just aired, that half his DNA is human, I assume he's being figurative and it's actually less than half, since he spoke merely of filling in missing sequences and Superboy looks just like Superman; much like one could say "Delilah is half Demona and half Elisa" but it wouldn't be technically accurate. For some reason her mentioning seeing Kid Flash on the news seemed to suggest that...But then again plenty of people see him on the news, don't they? ...Hmmm...

I don't think the FACT that she saw him on the news means she had a crush on him. But she could have indeed been curious about him. He's a young hero about her age. That's something that she would have been interested in - maybe even fantasized about - as she dreamed of being a hero herself (and not a criminal like her parents).

If this double posts I'm sorry, whoever the admin is can remove this only if it is a double post.

I saw your answers to my questions, or one of them anyway, but I also noticed that I left out the second question.

The companion comics have a date of say April '12 on them (issue 12) but that comic came out in January '12. Was this intentional or were the comics finished sooner than expected? I was waiting for the questions to open back up to ask this, and when asked, I messed up and left out my question.

I've noticed this trend when looking at the page on the comic website I order from. I may be wrong, I don't know.

One added thing, I noticed looking at the comic site, that Issue 14 has a different look than 1-13, any reason why the change in the way you display the issue number.

I've never really understood why comics' cover dates don't ACTUALLY reflect the dates they come out. (For example, it's currently July as I write this but our "September" issue just hit the shops, stands, etc.) But it's a fairly universal thing. Not at all specific to YJ.

Hey Greg, for a random question that has NOTHING to do with spoilers or any of your shows.

As a fan of Kim Possible, since this will hopefully be answered by you by the time it's 10 year anniversary comes around:
1.) What's your favorite episode?
2.) Who's your favorite villain and why?

Greg responds...

1. I've seen many Kim episodes, but there are probably many more that I haven't seen. My favorite one that I wrote is "Big Bother", but I only wrote two, so that's not much of a sampling. And in any case, it's been a bit too long. I can't remember too much beyond the fact that I loved what I saw of the series.

2. Probably Drakken. He's fun.

Ok so, light refracts when it enters water, many people know this. What I'm wondering is if Atlanteans notice this when they go on the surface world, do colours look different? Are small details (eg small writing) hard to see on the surface? Is everything a little blurry underwater? etc.

Am I reading to much into this??

Anyway, thanks for your time, love your work!

Ps- my brief perusal of the latest questions showed no spoilers!! Go ranting!!!!

I don't know the science of this. Suffice to say, they adjust enough to get by.

Marvin Martian Manhunter: writes...

Hey Greg love your show, and the characters. There's only one thing that's really bothered me in this series. What is it that Artemis sees in Wally that would make her be interested in him?

I haven't seen her do anything that suggests she's interested romantically. Again, that isn't to say that I see no relationship between them - just I see it as more of a surrogate sibling relationship thus far.

In order for this to be a romantic relationship, Artemis would have to enjoy Wally's company, and she doesn't. They rarely interact between missions besides when she's being a bossy surrogate sister to him. She doesn't like his sense of humor and I don't think she thinks very highly of him, either. If most of this interaction has happened in that comic book then that's different. Unless Artemis is poking Wally about him saying something dumb or seeing a chance to deflate him a bit (for his own good, in the end), she doesn't talk to him at all.

People have noted that Artemis got jealous of Megan in "BEREFT" when Wally mentioned knowing her, but they forget one crucial detail - up until that point, Wally gave Artemis his undivided attention. Being attracted to someone, and being attracted to their attention are two very different things. Besides, the problem with "BEREFT" being the biggest anchor to their "romantic" relationship is it relies on an AMNESIA, and the benefit of that plot trope is to have characters act differently than they usually do due to ignorance
I KNOW that Wally & Artemis are supposed to be a couple. My issue is that I see it as a case of the show TELLING me something rather than being effective at showing me. After all, "TSSM" didn't need amnesia or Dr. FATE to get across the notion that Peter and Gwen were kismet. And that lessens my enjoyment and appreciation of that subplot, where I feel it doesn't work without blunt signposts directed by the plot itself.

For equal time, Wally did spend much of his time beyond "BEREFT" flirting with Megan incessantly, until "COLDHEARTED" obviously. It was mostly his fault that they started off on a wrong foot, since he was upset that Artemis was replacing Speedy. Yes, he stopped referring to Artemis as "beautiful" after the amnesia beam was undone, but we still see he cares because at least twice he's reacted very strongly when Artemis was either hurt or "killed" in subsequent episodes. Of course, this reaction is similar to that of Conner - screaming her name and going on a rampage - although unlike Conner, Wally can't back it up. I've seen Artemis show as much concern for Kaldur during a rough mission as she has for Wally, which doesn't quite equalize it. I can at least rationalize that Wally likes Artemis because he finds her hot. I can't think of a single thing Artemis likes about Wally, at least romantically (or even in general). Which is why I interpret their relationship as more of a surrogate sibling quality, even as the show hammers that into a different shaped peg.

Greg responds...

Well, believe it or not, I think she found him physically attractive from moment one. And vice versa. I also think she admires his scientific brain. Wally can be a goofball, but there's no denying that he's brilliant. And she's interested in the same science he's interested in. I also think that she admires his heart; Wally never gives up. And I even think she admires his normality, which is something she never had. I think she likes the way he holds his own with her, gives almost as good as he gets, which she respects.

Basically, I think there are a lot of reasons she's attracted to him - even if she doesn't want to admit it to herself. Now, whether we've succeeded in showing this is a fair question and clearly, as far as you're concerned, we haven't. But for other fans, we clearly have. And I feel pretty good about it, myself. So... <shrug>.

Anyway, the thing I don't think you're really taking into account - or at least you're letting this surface fact overwhelm your interpretation of the relationship - is that both Artemis and Wally are (or were at the beginning of Season One) two very insecure people who cover their insecurities in different ways. Artemis plays the tough girl, and rarely lets her armor down. Wally plays the blustering wiseacre, and rarely admits to his true feelings either.

You say they hardly interact between missions, but we rarely SHOW you any time between missions. And she pokes him BECAUSE she likes him. And vice versa. It's a cliché, but it's one based on the very real way people - especially teens - sometimes behave.

I also disagree with your interpretation of "Bereft". You dismiss it based on tropes like "amnesia" and having characters act differently. But the whole point of Bereft was the clean slate. Artemis didn't have some kind of all-encompassing amnesia and neither did Wally. They ONLY lost six months, which happened to include their mess of an introduction to each other. But neither were behaving out of character for even a second. We tried to show that if they had met under different circumstances, the attraction to each other would have been immediate and reciprocal, and neither would have had to go through all the baloney that their true first meeting caused. The amnesia didn't create an artificial situation. It was their bad first intro that created that.

Now, you may have a point about "Denial". Perhaps we did "tell" too much in that. But I think we ALSO showed. I see chemistry between them in that episode, which Kent NOTICES and comments on. You don't see it, so it feels to you like it's being shoved down your throat artificially. But we'll have to agree to disagree there. I see the chemistry first. The messed-up interaction (and other characters reaction to both) second.

Oh, and by the way, I don't think Wally was ever really upset that Artemis was replacing Speedy. I think that was just an excuse. Shallow as it sounds, I think he was WAY more upset that he tripped and looked like a fool in front of a pretty girl, who then (due to her own insecurity) made fun of him. He reacted badly to that. And she reacted badly to his bad reaction. If Red Arrow hadn't been an issue, Wally would have just found a different peg on which to hang his insecurities.

I bought the trade paperback of "Young Justice" (issues #0 - #6) today and enjoyed it. A few specific comments.

1. The Terror Twins gave me a mild "Jackal and Hyena" feeling; I especially thought of the Diamond Exchange scene at the start of "Her Brother's Keeper" when I read the part about them on the loose in the mall.

2. Judging from the flashback to the Joker's invading the Justice League's old headquarters, the Flash must have once been just as much a wisecracker as Kid Flash now is, though he seems to have settled down in the present-day scenes.

3. The story in #3 and #4 ends with Selena apparently getting assassinated by the League of Shadows after all, even after the two assassins we met "on stage" were foiled, meaning that the team failed in its mission - something you don't see in super-hero stories too often. The last silent panel brought that home well, I thought.

4. I thought that #6 came up with an ingenious way of telling Robin's origin story without having him break the "don't reveal your civilian identity" stricture, by having him remember it to himself.

5. The end of #6 was another shocker - a vision of Superman gone rogue, destroying the Daily Planet building and killing Lois Lane and Perry White, before Superboy takes him down. It left me wondering: does whoever was behind Superboy's programming believe (and fear) that Superman may indeed run amok someday, or is that what he wants Superboy to believe? (A rhetorical question, I should add.)

I also enjoyed all the humor in it, from the scene in #0 where Wally's mother is correcting his grammar and Superboy misinterprets her statement to Miss Martian unwittingly demolishing Wally's plan for a private moment with her by the campfire and Wally's account of his origin (and, yes, having two super-speedsters from different eras called "Flash" *is* confusing, though at least they wear different costumes).

I'm definitely buying the next trade paperback when it comes out - and I'm also glad that it's easy to follow for someone like me who has only a general familiarity with DC Comics.

Greg responds...

1. I can see that.

2. Ditto.

3. Agreed. I think Art and Franco did a great job with that.

4. Thanks. We suggested that to Art and Franco.

5. Those aren't mutually exclusive options, of course.

Making it accessible to hardcore and casual fans alike was the goal.

Hi Greg, i would like to ask how does martian shapeshifting work? How did they get the anatomy of any living lifeform correct by thing about it e.g shape and position of lungs, heart reproductive organs etc by just thinking about it.

Also, clayface's shapeshifting ability does the clothes he forms when he changes his form feel like real clothes or like clay and can he take those clothes off or they automatically reduce to clay?

Thank you

Greg responds...

1. Study and experience. Telepathy probably helps. But that's why, in Season One, Miss Martian had trouble with male anatomy. She had not studied it in the same way.

2. They'd feel like clay - though he can modulate how wet or dry, soft or hard it is.

2a. He can shed any of his clay (including fake clothes) as it's a morphic field that keeps him alive. And, yes, once out of contact with him, the clothes would revert to clay... though I'm not sure if the color would change or not.

Hey, might I first say how much I'm enjoying the work you've done on Young Justice. I grew up watching Gargoyles, and when I heard you were going to be the one behind my favorite super-hero team, I was beyond excited. You've also been able to create such rich mythologies and fantastic characters.

1. So, I know that you've got a large selection of DCU characters that are going to appear in the Young Justice series as both minor and major roles, but due to the fact that there are a lot of variation of certain identities (i.e. 5 different characters who were Robin, 5 different Batgirls, etc...), are there any particular characters that you would have greatly liked to use for the show, but found yourselves unable to due to the continuity and current time setting of the characters you've established?

2. Its been established in the YJ comics that it wasn't only Dick Grayson's parents who died, but also members of his extended family who were also in the act. In the archive I see you named his aunt who died Karla. Did you at any point consider naming her "Harriet Cooper", as in the aunt of Dick's who appeared in the Adam West Batman show?

3. Why was it decided by the creative crew that Dick's uncle would survive, but remained paralyze?

4. Why are white martians portrayed as more humanoid looking in the Young Justice comic, but Miss Martian's white martian form looks more bizarre? Was it part of Miss Martian's lie, or just a decision on the part of the artist of the comic?

Greg responds...

1. Well, I suppose. But given enough episodes and/or issues, I'm sure we'll get to every character that Brandon and I want to get to.

2. Honestly, it didn't occur to me, but Aunt Harriet must exist somewhere on Earth-16.

3. It has to do with a future story idea.

4. AGAIN... nearly all the visuals of Mars in the comic were part of M'gann's lie. ALL Martians actually look (more or less) like M'gann's White Martian form as revealed in "Image", differing only by color.

Hey Greg, I probably say it every time I post, but love your work. Been a fan since Gargoyles, miss Spectacular Spider-Man, and glad you were able to develop Young Justice (love all the nods to DC Comics, really shows you care about the material).

My first question is more of a general curiosity than anything else. With Earth-16's White, Red, and Green Martians, I was wondering why red over the Yellow Martians of the Pre-Crisis Earth-1? I know the Green Martians made red clones of themselves for Saturn for the retcon predating the company's latest reboot.

My second question is was the Wildstorm library of characters available for YJ? I was ecstatic to see Icon and Rocket and just wondered if the door was open for some of DC's other recent acquisitions like Gen¹³ and DV8 being in the realm of possibility (I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler request).

Thank you very much and I apologize for the stress Ask Greg can generate. I know I get frustrated just reading over spoiler requests and repeated questions so I can imagine your feelings. I hope it doesn't discourage you from continuing Ask Greg too much.

Though my knowledge of DC Comics is quite extensive, I'm unfamiliar with Yellow Martians.

Wildstorm was NOT available when we began. I'd be interested in incorporating some of those characters if we got a third season. But so far, I've only included one - and only in a stealth way, that not even the company noticed.

Just finished watching "Image" which has definitely become my favorite. It particularly resonated with me because I'm a young woman dealing with my own insecurities about my image and my place in society and I was so happy to see M'gann's character develop and deepen in a such a way. So, thank you very much!!! Anyway my questions are:

1.) This episode dealt with deep subject matter in some areas. For example, the fact that M'gann turned into Canary and kissed Conner. I think it was a good set up to dive into M'gann's insecurities better but I also wondered why Canary's discussion with M'gann and the general reaction from the league (i.e. Green Arrow's amusement) wasn't more serious. I think Canary handle it seriously but she didn't really touch on the fact that it was inappropriate not only because it assumed another's identity but also because it violated the teacher-student relationship. So, I was wondering if it was just time limit or inappropriate subject matter or something else? Also, why wasn't Conner included in the discussion (seeing as he is also new to rules of society)?

2.) I'm a little confused about M'gann's background. Did J'onn know she was a White Martian and disguised her or is she just so awesomely cool that she fooled everyone? Is that why he is shocked to find out she is more powerful than he is telepathically?

Thanks for sharing your time and answering questions! I look forward to new episodes.

Greg responds...

1. Time constraints prevented us from going into as much depth as you or I might have wanted. But I think we got the most salient points across.

2. J'onn always knew his niece was white. But J'onn is also open-minded enough to know that her whiteness is only skin-deep (and often not even that). The differences between White, Green and Red Martians are CULTURAL. From a biological standpoint, they are INSIGNIFICANT. And although I think I've stated this before, M'gann IS J'onn's niece. M'gann's mother is J'onn's sister, and she is green. M'gann's father is white. Most of M'gann's siblings are green, though she does have one brother who is white.

But luckily some sites have done what you've done and banned spoilers from episodes that haven't aired in the US yet. So thanks, again, for helping out us fans who like to wait to see what happens.

Anyway, I've been loving these last few episodes, it seems that all the little plot points from early episodes are finally coming together!! Images was brilliant, and you have no idea how excited I was to see a pre-green Beastboy! And from what I gathered at the end of the episode, your version of how Garfield gets his powers definitely makes more sense than being bitten by a green monkey. Robin's reluctance to lead tied in to what he revealed in Disordered, and I loved the realism of that! Wally hinting that he knows who Batman is and Rob's actions to shut him up were hilarious! And props to Phil for the white martian design, I was thoroughly freaked out.

And while I'm on about the awesomeness of this show, let me just say that your brother (I'm assuming Jon is your brother here) actually had me fooled with Perdita's second 'death' in Coldhearted, and I'm never fooled by TV these days!! So, major props to him.

But you didn't mention anything about Romanian, which I thought was his mother tongue. So which language in your show-Romanian or English-is his first language? And what is his nationality, then?

Thank you, both for reading/answering this, and for Young Justice, which is truly Phenomenal. :D

Greg responds...

He's American born. Perhaps he speaks Romanian too. But I have to admit, this is the first time in over forty years of reading comics that I've heard anything about Dick Grayson's nationality being Romanian...

Hi Greg. I wanted to tell you I was impressed with the most recent YJ episode Image. I did NOT expect the topic of Meg's appearance as Hello Megan to be broached in this way, nor did I expect Meg's, evidently crippling, fear of her appearance being known to be presented and exercised in this way. This show keeps breaking expectation. You've become very skilled at taking the less obvious path, even in the minutia. I love it, and wish you many, many years of renewal.

Also found the creator credits for the Hello Megan intro amusing. Was it fun scripting & storyboarding the show's intro & segments? You got to break genre for a bit there. I liked Superboy's reaction to finding out his namesake a lot. I'm curious to see the fallout, if any.

Greg responds...

Doing "Hello, Megan!" was a TON of fun.

Writer Nicole Dubuc even made us "Hello, Megan!" crew t-shirts, which a bunch of us wore to SDCC in 2011.

First, I just want to say that Gargoyles is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I often return to it when I'm lonely and I'm always pleased by how fresh episodes like "Vows" remain after many viewings many years later. I'm also a big fan of Young Justice--to be honest, it took a while for the show to win me over 100% (of course, very high expectations were in place, both because it's a DC animated property and because you were working on it), but, I'll admit I've watched the Brazilian "leaks" up through "Unusual Suspects" and those episodes are pitch perfect, so, great job, and many thanks. I'm VERY excited for what's next.

Now, on to my questions:

As several people have pointed out, Brazil and Turkey are ahead of the US in terms of airing schedule. I don't know if you're aware, but fans have undertaken to sub the broadcast episodes back into English. I know you have mixed feelings on the subject of fanfiction, but I wonder if you have feelings on the practice of fans sub titling your work, originally created in English, back into English with their own translations? (And if you do have feelings/ideas on the subject, would you care to share?)

And while we're on the subject of fanfiction--I know a lot of authors who engage their fans have a public policy of not reading fanfiction, and you're among these. IIRC, the reason is because you don't want to incur the risk of being sued by a fan who claims you stole their work. I'm a law student and something of a nerd/geek, so I'm intensely curious to know where you picked this idea up. I'm taking copyright right now, and two of the doctrines we've learned seem to be in contradiction with the viability of this fear: (A) The idea/expression distinction (ideas are not protected under copyright, only their expression, so the idea of having Prospero on Gargoyles, even if you got it from another source, would probably not be considered infringement since the idea of having Prospero on Gargoyles is probably too abstract, whereas if there were a specific fanfic which predated a Gargoyles comic by five years and the Gargoyles comic carefully followed the plot of the fanfic, that could be a case of copyright infringement). And, (B) Infringing works are deprived of copyright protection, so if a fanfic infringes on a copyright (which, presumably almost all fanfic does, unless fanfic is fair use), it would have no copyright protection. (Here a critical question is whether fanfiction is fair use, which is an odd little quirk of the law, in that it's a well-known black hole in the law of copyright that seems unlikely to be adjudicated, and therefore, unlikely to ever be resolved.)

Of course, I'm not a lawyer (yet) and this is by no means intended to be legal advice, and I'm also not suggesting that you read fanfiction (personally, I'd rather you produce your awesome original stuff than spend time reading fanfic). But as a law nerd, I'm intensely interested in the relationship between perceptions of the law and the law on the books, and to what extent the law (and perceptions thereof) impact professional practice.

Thank you both for your wonderful works, and for your time.

Greg responds...

1. I am HORRIFIED that people are watching episodes for the first time on YouTube - and in a different language no less. Given that those episodes were due to air in the U.S. in a matter of mere weeks, I think it's appalling that anyone would choose to watch them that way. So then having someone sub or dub it back into English seems beyond preposterous - and again mildly HORRIFYING. Just be patient and watch the shows as they were meant to be watched. Don't spoil them for yourselves.

2. I learned this fear from corporate attorneys at EVERY entertainment company that's ever employed me. And I've also learned this fear from personal experience from fans and others who have filed lawsuits or threatened to. And that's the key. It's not about who has a valid case, it's about who can make me miserable by filing suit - and how I can protect myself (as much as possible) from exposing myself to that misery.

Hey greg! First of all, I just wanna say that Young Justice is my favorite show, and whatever you're doing, keep doing it. :) I just had a few comments on the last couple of episodes...
IMAGE- loved it. I really liked how M'gann was forced to become her true self and I especially loved the ending with Queen Bee telling her to 'cooperate or everyone will know'. Nice touch, really enjoyed it.
1) Why did it seem like Robin didn't really want to be leader? Was it because of what happened in Failsafe?
2) Where was Zatanna? I thought she was a part of the team, but i didn't see her here.
3) Does Martian Manhunter know that M'gann is not really a green martian? Does anyone else know, or does everyone believe her?
COLDHEARTED- I liked this one, not my favorite necissarily, but I definatly enjoyed it, and I can't think of any question I have that wouldn't be classified as a spoiler.
MISPLACED- I had been waiting for this episode since the series stopped in 2011, and let me just say it was worth the wait. I loved it, I loved Zatanna's heart breaking cry to her father just before he put on the helmet, I loved how Captain Marvel seemed to make the terrible situation funny. And again, no questions without spoilers...
Thanks for reading and I hope I didn't waste your time! Sorry if there are any spoilers or anything, I tried my best to stay away... Please answer as best as you can :)

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2. You also didn't see Artemis or Aqualad.

3a. Yes.

3b. They all know now.

Hello there mister Weisman, I am a big fan of your animated works (gargoyles in perticular) Admittedly im not very versed in dc comics though I really do enjoy the young justice series and as i was watching through it I developed a few questions I was itching to ask if its not to much trouble.

1. What was the original t.o morrows motive for creating the red robots?
2. Ive heard alot of people talk about legal issues regarding characters use and even a rumor that you intended to use 'wonder girl' but couldn't. I know legalities is probably not your forte but I was just curious what sort of legal issues could arise if their all characters owned by dc comics.
3. Assuming in theory that the show turns out to be a sensational hit with the audience and the network (which it already is) for many years to come, how long would you want to keep the show running? Possibly a silly question but what im trying to ask more is 'do you have an overall ending planned for the series or will you invent more story so long as your able?'
4. and i really really really hope this does not offend but I wanted to say I found your four response to this set of questions http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=14460 to be hilariously amusing. XD
By chance do you have any other 'spoilers' along those lines for any of your projects past or present?

Greg responds...

1. To infiltrate and destroy his heroic opponents.

2. I don't know. Though to correct your "rumor" - we were informed before we even really got started that WG (both of them) were off limits, so she was never really included in our development of Season One. Obviously, that changed during the Season, so we included Cassie during our development of Season Two.

3. No set ending, no. I'll keep going as long as they're willing to put up with me.

4. Yes, I can tell lies until the cows come home. But I have to be in the right mood.

i remeber reading in the archives that you pitched a premise for transformers in the 80s. when you say premise do you mean like a story arc or single episode. do you remeber what your idea was? be interested to hear what you would have done with that universe.

Greg responds...

Cary Bates and I pitched five separate springboards for individual episodes. No arcs.

Here's one:

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Transformer Premise
by Bates and Weisman
(4-11-86)

After endless study of Transformer programming specifications, Quarto Quintesson, a young programmer-artist has designed a construct that has a 97% probability of starting a devastating war between the Decepticons and the Autobots.

The Quintessons send a few Sharkticons to one of Saturn's moons. The Sharkticons drop off the construct and retreat. Earth sensors detect the Sharkticon intrusion. Rodimus Prime, Spike, Blurr and Bumblebee are in the vicinity on a diplomatic mission. They pause to investigate. Arriving on the moon, they discover the construct. The construct is a small crystalline "sculpture" on a rotating stand. The "sculpture" looks like an over-sized three-dimensional micro-chip. As it turns on its stand, colored light refracts through the crystals and a soft music is played.

Spike says: "Hey, it's like an old-fashioned music box!" But it takes him a few seconds to realize that the Autobots are absolutely entranced by the beauty that they perceive in the "Ultrachip".

Cut to Chaar, where Quarto has arrived to seek an audience with the mad leader Galvatron. He informs Galvatron of the mysterious Ultrachip that all Transformers will desire, but that the Autobots will attempt to keep from the Decepticons. Cyclonus suggests that such an Ultrachip might help Galvatron consolidate his rule over the divisive Decepticons. Galvatron is infuriated at the suggestion that he needs any help and attacks Cyclonus but then unpredictably changes his mind and sends Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps to appropriate the Ultrachip.

Meanwhile, on Saturn's moon, Spike is explaining the concept of art to the Autobots, who like eternal soldiers, have never had the time to think about such things before. Spike accesses computer hologram records of various earth masterpieces...Rodin's The Thinker, Warhol's Soup Can, Bisin's Quantum Lady, etc. None has any real effect on the Autobots. The Ultrachip, however, is something new and wonderful to them.

And then Cyclonus and the Sweeps attack. The Autobots defend themselves, and the Ultrachip is momentarily forgotten, until the Decepticons get a good look at it. They too are mesmorized by its beauty. Without truly understanding why and having little to do with Galvatron's orders, they know that they must have it at any cost. The Autobots feel the same.

Spike pulls Rodimus aside and asks whether this "music box" merits all this trouble. Rodimus must explain that to Transformers, there can be no greater prize. Nevertheless, he offers Cyclonus a compromise. The Ultrachip will be left in a neutral location, where both Autobot and Decepticon can admire it. Cyclonus refuses the offer. Only the Decepticons may gaze upon the Ultrachip. Blurr in turn says that only the Autobots will be allowed to admire it.

Watching on his viewscreen, Quarto is practically gleeful, soon this skirmish will escalate into a full fledged war.

The battle continues. And the fragile Ultrachip is nearly destroyed by the conflict. Rodimus makes the extremely difficult decision to let Cyclonus take the Ultrachip. Better that the Decepticons get it, than that such beauty should be destroyed. Thus the Quintessons' latest plot is foiled by Rodimus' reason and compassion.

Cyclonus takes the Ultrachip back to Chaar and gives it to Galvatron, who orders everyone to clear his chamber. When he is alone, the mad leader destroys the Ultrachip...(or maybe he doesn't).

And on Cybertron, Kup is talking to Rodimus about the Ultrachip: "Too bad the Decepticons got it, we got a raw deal!"

But Rodimus opens a door, where we see Bumblebee, playing with crystals, constructing his own personal artistic Ultrachip, and Rodimus points out, "They may have gotten the chip, but we got the inspiration."

Now, before ANYONE posts questions about this premise, please keep in mind that this was TWENTY-SIX years ago. I remember NOTHING more than what you see above. NOTHING.

Some questions about the YJ episode "Image."
1. How old is Marie Logan and when did "Hello Megan" originally air?
2. If the show is so obscure it's not on the Internet, why were the reruns on the Comedy Classics Channel?

Greg responds...

1. At the time of "Image", Marie is 47.

1b. "Hello, Megan!" aired during the 1979-1980 television season.

2. They were checking to see if it would get any ratings.

Hey Greg,

First of all, thanks for the great work on Young Justice. It is incredibly enthralling and engaging. I definitely feel the same investment to catch every episode week to week as I did with Spectacular Spider-Man. The great ingenuity in storytelling is quite apparent here as it was in SSM.

I've had the great pleasure to catch the latest episode, Image, and I had noticed something in the end during the scene between Queen B and Miss Martian. It seems that during some angles in the scene, there is someone in the corner, hiding in the shadows, watching the whole exchange. I couldn't tell if what I saw was genuine or a pixel issue due to my TV being quite outdated, and I tried confirming it by watching the rerun, but to no avail. I have a belief that it was Robin in the corner, but can you confirm this? If the figure was meant to be ambiguous, can you confirm that here was a figure in the corner at the very least? Or are my eyes just seeing things? Thanks for your time.

P.S. Huge kudos to the introduction of Gar. What a fantastic approach to such a fun character as well as the references in the Hello, Megan credits.

Greg responds...

I think you're seeing things, I'm afraid. Let's blame the pixels.

Sorry Greg, but i don't think ill be checking the unawnsered question section anymore, the next month of episodes have soured because of it. I'm sorry, but i just really enjoy that sense of surprise when you get deeply immense in a show and they hit you with that curve ball, it's no fun seeing it coming.

Okay, that was unnecessary and whinny, but hey-moving onto questions...

1. When megan retained her human eyes in her ''fake'' real martian form, was that an oversight on her part/attempt at remaining connectable, or do girl martians really look like that.

2.Could you please elaborate on Queen Bee's form of hypnosis?Sorry for vagueness, but the wiki entry is dry and i'm curious.

3.Can Teekle be killed? (that sounds like something that would be asked in the past..)

4. Is the whole ''Hello ,Megan!'' catchphrase going to continue now that it's origin has been revealed?(you must have been laughing every time someone said is was forced and tiring-considering that was almost the point..that was the intended reaction.mind=blown).
5. Dose doctor fate need sleep? and what dose he do when he's not survaying the world for magical threats and what not..

Could you give us a few details on what the process to create an episode is like? I have no idea what doing online and locked picture mean...thanks!

Greg responds...

Sure.

1. We start/started by breaking down the entire season on index cards on a VERY large bulletin board.

2. Once the basic arc was approved, I wrote up premises for every episode in the season. Each premise is about a page long.

3. We brought in our freelance writers and broke down a handful of episodes at a time, with each writer in the meeting (myself included) taking one episode as their own, but with every writer in the meeting contributing ideas and notions to everyone's story.

4. The writer goes off with my written premise and the notes from the meeting and writes up an outline. This is a prose document, broken down by scene/sequence of about 8 to 10 pages in length. For me, as a story editor this is a VERY important step, as it nails down the story, making script writing much easier.

5. I do a rewrite on the writer's outline and submit it to WB, CN, DC, Brandon Vietti and the episode's director for notes.

6. The writer goes off with my revised outline and all the notes and writes a script.

7. I do a rewrite on the writer's script and submit it for notes to WB, CN, DC, BV, S&P, legal and the episode's director. Usually showed it to Kevin Hopps as well, who was great at catching my mistakes. The first season, Kevin was on staff, and it was part of his job. The second season, he just did it as a favor. Good guy.

8. I do another rewrite or polish based on all the notes.

9. We record the script, casting any new rolls, etc.

10. Simultaneously, the storyboards are begun...

11. While at the same time, design work for the episode begins: characters, backgrounds, props, effects. This is ALL black and white line-art at first.

12. The boards are roughed out and get notes from the director.

13. The boards are cleaned up and submitted to Brandon and myself.

14. Brandon and I give notes, and the boards are revised.

15. Meanwhile, designs are approved and then we go through the same process with color and background painting.

16. Boards are slugged for time to make sure the show isn't too long or too short.

17. X-Sheets (timing sheets) are created to give detailed information to the animators about how long each individual action will take and to give mouth movements to the characters.

18. All these materials are shipped to Korea to either Moi or Lotto to be animated.

19. We occasionally call for "Wedge Tests" that allow us to preview important or tricky bits of animation in advance to make sure we're getting what we want.

20. The animation comes back rough from overseas. Our editor Jhoanne Reyes compiles it into what we call an A-Frame. It's a very ROUGH cut.

21. Brandon, Jho, David Wilcox and myself call retakes, i.e. we ask the overseas studio for animation corrections. We also call out visual effects for Matt Girardi.

22. Brandon, Jho and I edit the episode, LOCKING it to the exact time that the network requires.

23. We spot the locked episode with our composers, Dynamic Music Partners, pointing out where and what we are looking for in the music.

24. We do the same thing with Audio Circus, our sound effects experts.

25. We preview the music in advance of the sound mix to make sure it's on target.

26. Generally, by now most of the retakes have come back from Korea and Matt's done most of his effects work too.

27. We mix the show for sound. That is we sit in a room and painstakingly balance the sound effects with the foley with the music with the dialogue.

28. We "On-Line" the episode. This is our last final view of the finished product to make sure everything is as good as time, budget and our abilities will allow it to be.

There's obviously more to it than all of the above, but that should give you the basics.

(1)So obviously Bialya and Qurac along with the two asian countries in the episode with Red Arrow and Cheshire were all fake. Do you guys choose to create fake countries in order to not offend the real countries?
(2)I saw that you guys kept the cat mask concept on Cheshire from Teen Titans. Is there anything else that influenced you from the Teen Titans show? If yes you can just say yes, you don't have to go into detail about the influences if they cause spoilers.
(3)Is Young Justice going to be formatted like the Justice League t.v series episodes where like only a few members of the team get to go on missions? For example, in the justice league series Batman, Haw Girl and Wonder Woman would have an adventure and in the next episode It was Flash, Man Hunter and Green Lantern.

Greg responds...

1. No. It has more to do with already existed in the DC Universe (pre-New 52, which didn't exist yet when we were working on our seasons).

2. I can't think of any other conscious influences, but I won't deny that it's all part of the soup.

3. The Team is big enough now - and has been, frankly, since the beginning - that it doesn't always make sense for everyone to go on every mission. That's why we have squads.

What is your take on yj fan fiction? Have you read any?

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"I'm very ambivalent toward fanfiction . On the one hand, it's very gratifying. I've created something that has taken on a life of it's own. That people like enough to invest their time into and create anew. On the other hand, I have a territorial instinct that exhibits a kind of knee-jerk negative reaction to seeing other people controlling the destiny of my characters. (That's the main reason why Goliath Chronicles was so painful for me to watch.)

For example, I know that TGS is doing their own TimeDancer spin off. That's very cool, but somebody mentioned (though I don't know if this was the final word) that they're not naming Brooklyn's son Nashville, because they think the name is silly or because they hate country music or whatever. I can't help resenting that. (I know it's not rational, but I'm trying to be honest about my emotions here.) I haven't explained the Nashville name. I don't intend to explain it yet. Obviously, I have no intention of making Brooklyn into the next Garth Brooks, but I'm not in the mood to go into my reasons yet. But when someone else decides that GREG THE GARGOYLE MASTER made a misstep regarding the name of a character, I bristle.

But going back to the first hand, I have to acknowledge that once a thing is created and sent out into the world, it no longer belongs to the creator, but to the interpretations of those who received it. If a fan believes that Gargoyles were created by fey sorcery, then to that fan they were, no matter what I might say to the contrary in a comment room. Fanfiction is the ultimate example of fans interpretating (and extrapolating upon) what they've seen."

I just have more of a comment about spoilers.

My issue is we (being the general public audience) may not be clear of what constitutes in the area if spoiler request. Granted yes, certain questions clearly ruin a lot about story, however when it comes to character that's a little too ambiguous. If someone ask questions about love life for a character, it could end up becoming a story element and thus a spoiler.

Its the difference between asking some women their birthday and their age. One is considered a little rude while the the other isn't unless of course the woman takes it to that level out of context. I may not come out and ask her zodiac sign, but asking her b'day is simpler and should be received with the simplest answer, then if the answer is either May 4 and not May 4 1970 you perceive the the short answer is probably because she's being protective of her age.

I've noticed that sometimes a question got shot down and was never addressed (to my knowledge anyway) on the show (YJ).

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"Questions that ask me to SPOIL my own show are exasperating. As I've said over and over, I'm just NOT going to do that. Why would I? Even obvious stuff can't be addressed, because if I acknowledge anything, the stuff I don't comment on is spoiled by default. So please, please, please refrain. Any question that falls into this category will simply be answered: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT."

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"I had many specific ideas, some of which would undoubtedly have changed over the course of production. But I'm just not too inclined to reveal them. It's not that I'm trying to torture you, it's just that there's no way I can do them justice in this format. I write 'X' would have happened, and that one statement will get dissected across the internet. And any idea is only as good as its execution - which you'll now never get to see. It may sound stupid here, but I might have been able (with the help of Vic Cook and all my other many collaborators) to pull it off on the series and have everyone think I'm a genius. Or not. But at least it would have had a shot. I just don't feel like opening myself up to potential second-guessing based on raw notions as opposed to executed episodes."

I'm a big fan of continuity as I gather you are too based on your use of dates, your shows in general and an interview you did years ago critizing the X-Men for not evolving and moving forward. I think DC has some fantastic characters and concepts, which is one of the reasons I like Young Justice. However, I've found that without fail whenever I start reading their books and enjoying them, they erase characters and storylines I've become fond of from existence in a big reset or reboot in an effort to become “new reader friendly” e.g Linda Danvers, Helena Bertinelli, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Team Titans, Infinity Inc etc.

In the end, this practice alienated me as a reader and I no longer buy DC books because as a reader I find this extremely irritating. So first of all, I'm glad that your not doing that with Young Justice. The characters in show have already greatly progressed through season 1 and I'm very optimistic about the Season 2 based on the first episode.

I'm curious though as a comic book reader what do you make of DC comics and their practice of the "reset"?

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"As you noted, I have NOT had the time to read the New 52, so I will not comment on that specifically. Whether or not it works creatively depends more than anything else on execution. Since I haven't seen the execution, I can't respond to how it works creatively. But I KNOW that commercially it's been a HUGE hit. I like to believe that it wouldn't have done quite so well, if it wasn't executed well too.

But generally, on the idea of reboots, I do have a handful of thoughts:

1. I don't want to be a hypocrite. When we started Spectacular Spider-Man and again on Young Justice, we were effectively doing a continuity reboot. I feel when adapting something to a new media, that's essential, but it doesn't change the fact that (a) we did it and (b) I was relieved to be able to do it. Relieved to be able to jettison elements that I felt didn't work or were redundant or confusing, etc. Our goal, particularly on Spider-Man, was to come up with something Classic, Cohesive, Coherent, Contemporary and Iconic. So how can I object if the comics themselves want to do this?

2. In the end, whether or not either SpecSpidey or YJ was/is successful depends on our execution of our ideas, additions and cullings. I like to think both shows are successful, but that's a judgement each individual viewer would have to make for him or herself.

3. I was working on staff at DC Comics during the publication of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths. In fact, during my very first editorial meeting, I raised the question as to why we weren't starting ALL our books over (with the numerical exceptions of Detective and Action Comics) with issue #1. I remember very clearly a collective groan rising up from the conference room table. (They had dealt with this question for months before my arrival.) On the one hand, they wanted Crisis to be a real sea-change, a true reboot (before we knew that term). On the other hand, if you truly reboot Batman, then Robin doesn't exist yet. No Robin, no other sidekicks either. So no Teen Titans. And at the time, the New Teen Titans was the company's best selling book.

4. So the end result was that some things got rebooted and some did not.

5. This was complicated by the fact that certain creators came late to the party, and certain characters got reboots too long AFTER Crisis.

6. And so, as a READER, I couldn't help feeling that - rather than simplifying the continuity - Crisis made it more complicated. This will happen in general, naturally, as time passes and more and more comics are produced by a variety of creators and editors, but Crisis seemed to exacerbate the problem for me personally.

7. In part this was because, I really liked the DC Multiverse. I agree that it was abused to the point of confusion. (And I think it was nuts that Earth TWO had the forties heroes and Earth ONE had the sixties heroes. Just the odd backwards numbering itself created additional unnecessary confusion.) But if limits had been placed on the number of parallel earth stories and crossovers, I think it could have been fine.

8. ESPECIALLY, if they had created a new Earth-THREE, starting over with heroes of the eighties, with Superman and Batman (being new to the hero thing but) remaining relatively constant. But with a new Green Lantern (for example) as different from Hal Jordan as Jordan was from Alan Scott.

9. But that didn't happen. And in fact, though I've read very few comics since 1996, my understanding is that reboots have hit over and over at both DC and Marvel. That negates reader trust in the worth and weight of the stories they're reading. It's more insidious than obvious. And you risk alienating old readers, even as you may or may not attract new ones. You'll always get a short term gain off of a reboot, because everyone wants to check it out. But long term...

10. And going back to my first point - which is that most everything depends on execution - I personally didn't love the execution of some of the post-Crisis rebooting. Some people may have loved it. And that's totally legit. But some of the rethinking on certain individual characters didn't work too well for me.

11. Though personally I think the Bates-Weisman-Broderick reboot on Captain Atom from his Charlton incarnation was brilliant. ;)

12. So, personally, my feeling on reboots in general is that you either do them or you don't. You've got to be thorough and ruthless about it, or don't bother, because otherwise - long term - you're creating more problems than you're solving.

13. And still and all, ultimately, it all depends on execution."

Hi Greg,
I finished watching "Happy New Year" today. At first I freaked out about the time jump. After I cooled down, I was smiling to myself thinking, 'This definitely sounds like Greg Weisman'. I LOVE the twists and turns you put into this show. It reminds me of Gargoyles, which I watched a few years back. I can't wait to see what the rest of season 2 brings. Fantastic work to you and your co-workers!

Is Batgirl voiced by Alyson Stoner?

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"Alyson Stoner as Batgirl."

Wow I can't believe how negative some people are being about the time skip. I absolutelt LOVE the new team! I can't wait to see how the old team members have changed in 5 years. Also, I love that Zatanna is on the League now!! Kudos for taking such a big risk. So now my question: Do you have a plan for how the comic will run once the season 1 storylines are done in it? Would you prefer to set it up to show what happened in the 5 year gap, or show stories between episodes like you are currently doing? I'm more excited than ever to watch Young Justice!

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"All this has required some adjustments. The original plan was to finish all the stories set DURING Season One before rebranding the book. But TPTB at DC understandably decided that since the television show has already been rebranded, we shouldn't wait that long to rebrand the comic. And given that, I wanted to launch the rebranding with a BIG story that featured all - or nearly all - of the Team. So the Green Arrow, Black Canary, Artemis, Red Arrow story (set after episode 114), I originally had planned as a two-parter for issues 20-21 will have to wait. Given enough issues (keep buying those books people!), we'll get to everything eventually - including that Arrow-Family story. The new structure will use our timestamps to allow us to bounce back and forth (even within a single issue) from Season One to Season Two to the gap between seasons and BEYOND..."

Hi, I was wondering about Guardian in Cadmus at the end of Auld Acquantince(sorry for the spelling). Is he a clone too? Thanks for replying, if this isn't a spoiler ;)

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

JIM HARPER: "We get it, you're a clone! But you're not the only clone on this rooftop, and I know from personal experience how tough it was to come to grips with being a copy of someone else."

Who will voice as Wonder Girl? Is it someone as famous as Maggie Q who recently voiced as Wonder Woman? Can you give to WG fans a little hint like alphabet initials like I'm using right now?

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"New voice actors, including Mae Whitman ('Arrested Development', 'Avatar, the Last Airbender') as Wonder Girl..."
