oh look! yet another sapphire! im so glad i post both of my FULL names! =)

you said in a recent post that the gate WASNT forged. but the weird sisters specifically said "the gate and the eye were forged on avalon" or am i remembering wrong?

Greg responds...

Yeah, as I said, it's a semantics thing. They weren't being literal. The question that I answered was.

I don't know why I'm obsessed with these skiffs. =P

1) The group originally got the skiffs from the dock near King Kenneth's castle. Presumably, they belonged to local fishermen. a) Did they indeed belong to humans, or did they have some other origin? b) Was it common practice among humans to carve this face onto their boats? c) Was this a local tradition, or did many people world-wide know about the significance of this face?

2) You previously agreed with someone that the skiff's ability to "send people where they need to be" was a property of Avalon itself. You also told me that the Gate being "lost" was similar to how Goliath and company were lost during the World Tour--also seemingly traveling at random, in both cases, people ended up "where they need to be". a) So is the Gate's ability to find these points in time and space where Brook needs to be, a property of Avalon itself, as it is for the skiffs? b) Does that mean that Avalon has some kind of control over the Gate?

Greg responds...

1a. Not saying.

b. That would be telling.

c. The full significance may never be known.

2. The Gate doesn't need Avalon, but the theory is the same.

Hi Greg. You said that the Phoenix Gate wasn't forged, but in "Avalon, Part 2", Selene says, "The Eye and the Gate were forged on the Island". So...

1) Are the Sisters unaware or misinformed about how the Gate came to exist?

2) Who was responsible for originally causing the Gate to exist?

You also said that "When free, the gate travels about on its own, as Brooklyn learns to his chagrin". Angela also said "without a mind to direct to gate, it will be forever lost in time". So...

3) When the gate is "travel[ing] about on its own", is that what you meant by "lost in time"? "Lost", as in "having no sense of direction and randomly arriving at destinations", or is it lost as in "lost to the world", meaning no one would have access to it anymore? Because I believe you also said that the Gate wasn't moving randomly, and that there was often a purpose for Brooklyn going where he did. So if Brooklyn isn't controlling the Gate, and the Gate is moving on its own, and a mind normally needs to guide the Gate, is it the Gate itself that's deciding its destinations? And does that mean that the Gate has a mind? And does that mean that the gate is alive in some way? (sorry for grouping the questions like this--but they all lead into one another).

Greg responds...

1. This is merely a problem of semantics.

2. The timestream.

3. "Lost" is a point-of-view thing. One might say that Goliath, Angela, Elisa and Bronx were lost during the World Tour...

Greg-

I always thought the fight in Avalon part 3 between goliath and the archmage was quite cool. When the Archmage and Goliath battle for control of the Eye of Odin, the archmage uses the phoenix gate to try and shake goliath, and until i read some of your past responses I had always assumed he only used the teleportation powers of the gate rather than the time travel abilites. Where did the Archmage and Goliath go in the timestream and how long were they gone? Did goliath have any effect on the gate since he was attempting to wrest the eye, which at the time was linked to the gate and the grimorum?

thanks for the answers!

Greg responds...

I'm not answering that now. Sorry.

Is the Phoenix Gate called the Phoenix Gate because it will be destroyed and recreated or is it something else ?

Greg responds...

It's mostly about the flame effect, but it's also about its circular/cyclical nature.

1a) Are/were there any living phoenixes in the Gargoyles Universe? b) If so, were/are they a separate species, or are they Children of Oberon or a form of gargoyle?

2a) Did the forging of the Phoenix Gate have anything to do with (an) actual phoenix(es)? b) If so, was whatever involvement they/it had, voluntary?

3a) Was Princess Katharine's mother ever aware of the powers of the Gate? b) ...was the Normand ambassador? c) Was Malcolm ever aware that he was going to receive the Gate?

4a) When the Gate was broken in half, did it become *completely* nonfunctional, or did some residual magic remain? b) When it was whole again, was it as good as new?

5) What is the immediate source of the magic/energy that the Gate draws on?

6a) Why is the incantation for an Avalonian magical artifact in Latin? b) Is that particular incantation necessary, or can the Gate be activated some other way?

Greg responds...

1a. Maybe.

b. Not saying.

2a. Maybe. If the Gate was forged. Which it wasn't.

b. Maybe.

3a. No.

B. No.

c. He was informed after it was stolen.

4a. Non-functional.

b. Yes.

5. Ambient time stream need. (Generally measured in Farquars.)

6a. Necessary for a human to harness it.

b. When free, the gate travels about on its own, as Brooklyn learns to his chagrin.

Hi Greg,
a question about time traveling: In an episode (I forget the name of it) Goliath says, that time couldnt been changed during a time traveling. But how is it then possible, that he could save Griff in London?
So, lets think further: if someone really could change time, I won´t know, what happens, if someone REALLY evil encounters Brooklyn on his time travels. He could easily steal the gate, travel to castle Wyvern in the past and could destroy all of the Gargoyles in stone form. OUCH!
I hope, you have thought about that writing M.I.A.
CU, John

Greg responds...

Hey John,

You just didn't follow the story. That may be my fault, but I think perhaps you weren't paying close attention. Goliath was able to save Griff because he had already saved Griff. It was his future, so he didn't know about it yet, but it was the world's past, and it had already happened. He didn't CHANGE history, he fulfilled it.

Remember that Leo and Una recognized Goliath from 1940 at the very beginning of the episode -- before Goliath had gone there from -- and this is important -- from his point of view. It was only from Goliath's point of view that the action was playing forward. In linear time it had already happened.

Does that help?

Hello Greg,

This is my first time posting a question, but I have been reading this site for a little less then a year now. First off I would like to say that Gargoyles is my favorite American animated program.

My question is in refrence to the Archmage's "time travel journey", just in case Todd Jensen's guess is(or by the time you read this, was) incorrect. Did the Archmage take his trip between the scences when he leaves Avalon("I thought he'd never leave" scene), and when he goes to save his former self from from falling down the cliff? I would think this would be the best place to put it, I think it is the only time when he uses the Phenix Gate with himself as the only traveler. BTW if Mr. Jensen's placement of the trip is correct I am sorry for wasting your time and for assuming he was incorrect before the question was answered.

As almost everybody does I would like to thank you greatly for giving us the gift that is Gargoyles:D

Greg responds...

You're welcome. And I'm glad you decided to post. But Todd was right. Sorry.

You mentioned that the Archmage does take a little extra "time travel journey" in Avalon Part Three, if one watches carefully. Is this the part where the Archmage and Goliath are battling and the Phoenix Gate starts transporting the two of them all over the place? (I always liked that scene).

Greg responds...

Clever boy.

A question about the Archmage in "Avalon". In "Avalon Part Two", the "enhanced Archmage" tells his former self that the 20th century world has become a place of science, with weapons as powerful as any magic. My question is: how did he know this? After all, from all that we can tell, all his time in the modern world during the time loop (and even after it) was spent on Avalon rather than in the outside world, and so he wouldn't have had the opportunity to discover the changes in the outside world for himself.

Or did he actually know this? Or was he just saying that because he'd already heard himself saying it in the time loop when he was the "original Archmage"?

Greg responds...

The latter.

Though he 'existed' in time more than you think. Watch Avalon 3 carefully, and see if you can see where he might have taken a little journey.
