Is it my imagination, or is there something wrong with Kid Flash's super speed after 5 years? I mean, The Flash and Impulse appeared to be WAY more faster than KF!

Greg responds...

Flash (Barry Allen) has always been considerably faster than Flash (Jay Garrick) and Kid Flash (Wally West). Impulse (Bart Allen) is as fast as Barry. But nothing's changed in our series - on this topic - from moment one.

Hi Greg,

I have a few questions/comments:

1) In "Bloodlines", it appears that Wally arrives in Central City just after Impulse. However, when Nightwing calls Wally initially, the map indicates that Impulse is already in Indiana/Kentucky at this time and moving very rapidly (passing through states in several seconds). I believe Central City is somewhere in the midwest, though you haven't specified. Given that Wally is established to be noticeably slower than Impulse, if he is in Palo Alto when he gets the call, he would likely arrive in Central City a good bit later than Impulse. This is supported by how long it takes him to run across the country in "Coldhearted", although that was during a blizzard. Is Wally's quick arrival a continuity error? Maybe he was already near Central City when he got the call. There's probably enough ambiguity that it can be explained away regardless. Sorry for being so nitpicky about this. Feel free to provide a snarky response.

2) I liked line about the intersection of "Fox and Gardner". I'm sure this was a shout-out to the late Gardner Fox, original writer of Jay Garrick's Flash. Do you remember whose idea it was to include that line?

3) Peter David wrote "Bloodlines", and he also wrote the original YJ comic. Did he write this episode because it was the introduction of Impulse (a primary character from the comic)?

4) Was Neutron's suit intended to resemble the Anti-Monitor from Crisis on Infinite Earths? I'm not too familiar with Neutron, but from what I could tell his suit design on the show appeared to deviate from his designs in the comics. I thought this might be intentional as a reference to Barry Allen's memorable death in the crisis.

5) Lastly, why did you choose Sportsmaster as a primary villian on the show? I imagine it was related to the decision to use Artemis. I ask because I think you've done a great job of making Crusher Crock compelling and realistic. I like how he pole vaults over a wall in "Targets" and uses the discus and javelin as weapons. In my opinion this makes him seem much more like an athlete (decathlete?) and less like a big thug/goon which many villian enforcer types seem to be.

Thanks for answering, and here's hoping for many more seasons!

Greg responds...

1. Uh, does the term "Zeta Tube" ring any bells?

2. Mine or Peter David's.

3. I think that, in part, made it fun for him.

4. No. It was designed to resemble Neutron's suit from the comics.

5. ASKED AND ANSWERED.

Was Impulse saying "spoilers" when he accidentally revealed a future event at all influenced by the use of the catchphrase "spoilers" in Doctor Who (mostly in relation to River Song and the Doctor meeting in the wrong order)?

Greg responds...

It might be. Though I feel like I'd heard that before River too.

Is it just a coincidence that Jason Marsden voiced Impulse after voicing Noel Kreiss, a time traveler trying to set right a dying future, in the English dub of Final Fantasy XIII-2?

It's a coincidence, as I have zero familiarity with Final Fantasy anything.

One more quick question from a curious insomniac...what is Psimon's heratage? (keeping in mind "American" is a nationality, not a hetatage). I ask because the voice actor makes him sound slightly Germanic, but Nightwing said something to the effect of him being Bialia's enforcer (i know the two are not mutually exclusive). And having spent over a year in Afghanistan, I know the fact that he is much "whiter" doesnt exclude him from being middle-eastern either.

Greg responds...

I'll leave that to your imagination for now. Beyond that, it's a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Site-News-CreateSpace-Amazon-Never-on-DVD-Page/16980

Disney has signed with Amazon's CreateSpace "manufacture on demand" program. The benefit of that program is that you can release content that wouldn't otherwise be profitable, because there's no inventory risk, because inventory is only produced as it is sold.

Supposedly the first round of Disney stuff is going to be all one-off films, but I was wondering if there have been any whispers in the grapevine about maybe considering to do some of the unfinished Disney TV-DVD series (Gargoyles, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck... holy moly, did they finish ANY of the series they started?).

I'm not sure if you'd be involved in such a thing, but have you heard hide or hair of it?

I'm not in the loop.

Our script numbers were 101-126 and 201-220, but there were different numbers for production: 345-661 through 345-686 and 345-861 through 345-880.

Hey greg I just watched your work on spectacular spiderman and needless to say I think you did a great job, as an old fan of the 90's seires I think you surpassed it in many ways.I still I can't believe I liked tombstone as a villain

On to my question.

1.- I saw some character worrying for the steriotypical "social hyerarchy" stuff like football players and cheer leaders being "popular" (example Flash). Personally I never experienced such a thing as everyone just hanged out with whom ever they liked it.

My question is Do you believe that social hierarchy of populars, not populars does exist? or you portrayed it due to tradition (many shows portray that)

Thank you for your time

Greg responds...

1. Yes, I believe it exists. It certainly existed (back in the dark ages) when I went to high school, and at least to some extent I observe it in the environment of my children.

Greg couple of questions
1). Does Superman think he is the only Kryptonian left?
2). Why has Icon chosen to stay on Earth when their is technology capable of taking him back home?
3). Why has Martian Manhunter chosen to defend Earth?
4). If Aquaman and Wonder Woman worship to some degree greek gods how do they view Captain Marvel who seems to draw his powers from said gods?
5). With Black Manta taking Ocean Masters place on the light I would assume he also takes his designation, so since the light started how many members have been replaced and who were they?

Greg responds...

1. Yes. (Not counting Superboy.)

2. Mostly because of Raquel, and how she has managed to engage him with the world.

3. Like Icon, initially he was trapped here. When he finally had the option to return, he found he no longer felt at home on Mars.

4. With fondness.

5. Those designations were for the purpose of our credits only. As of the beginning of Season Two, only Ocean-Master has been replaced.

Laura 'ad astra' Sack writes...

This was an originally approved question got booted as part of the new rules. I'm hoping to be hitting on the problems and correcting them. It probably seems a little out of date since I first posted it after Missing aired. (I also originally mispelled Klarion like a Clarion. As of this posting you are about 100 answers away from a separate posting apologizing and mocking myself for the mistake. I'm looking forward to how you'll respond to that posting when there is no previous post to be referenced.):

Catching up before posting leaves me making comments of shows that aired weeks ago! I don't have a lot to say on all of them, but as a whole they've been outstanding:
Missing
1- (question) I believe someone has already asked if Zatana stays in her old school. {yep- several people asked, and you answered} With Z Tubes it is easily possible and would leave her with a sense of stability. But it does leave me wondering- Zatara appeared openly a member of the Justice League-
a- Do her friends know she was connected to the superheroes?
b-Had magic herself?
c-Lost her father?
d-In the comics Zatana lives in a family mansion full of magic. Does it, or something like it, exist in the YJ world?
2 (comment)- I see I am not the only one to notice Babs & Bette together again.
3- (comment) Didn't love Riddler's costume. I think I have a think for bowlers :)
4- (comment) Nice touch- Cat looking badly tired reporting the news. The only time I remember broadcasters looking tired was 9/11. (I think the lead anchor for NY1 went 48 hours straight on air.) This would be a matching level event.
5- (long question- modified at end) (I'm asking this question in case the how itself is a spoiler. Other folks have asked how.) Others have asked about children in positions that suddenly being separated from adults might have been injurious, even deadly. Often I see issues of intent helping get around certain such unpleasantries- ie. Since even most really bad guys would not want newborns dropping to the floor as their parents disappear, that wouldn't happen. Either the swirling magic would deposit then on the floor more slowly, or the spell itself would take a few seconds to finish for parents to move the child from the unsafe position. (Much like the image of Hudson and Goliath stretching against the stone sleep in Awakenings when they realize they were lured away from the castle before the massacre.) Intent does seem possible here, otherwise why would the age of 18, a societal construct that doesn't even cover the whole world, effect the spell. {Or is that 'affect'? Both look wrong to me. My grammatical instincts stink.} But that it doesn't seem to work because I don't think Clarion {see- wrong spelling;} cared one way or the other if babies died. (IIRC the more light hearted source material had a misguided kid causing the whole story, djin powered, I think. His not wanting any kids dead would be enough for there not to be.)
a- I don't know anything about the other magic folk. Would their intent affect Clarion's spell? And if so did any of them have enough basic empathy to care to protect the children at the moment of the transition?
b- That wouldn't help children in cars or buses at high speeds or on planes. If you watched the show Flash Forward and saw the image of planes falling out of the sky into buildings, that sort of devastation seems inevitable on the children Earth. The actual vehicles may be fine from the adult Earth, but any loss of life would be permanent. On the other hand, that sort of trauma would deeply scar the world. I can't imagine the event would not be mentioned frequently overshadowing most other events for episodes to come. While the tone of this story is way more serious that the original World Without Grownups, it wasn't that dark. Am I misreading that there was a way that the millions of planes and trains and cars of the world were largely somehow stopped from killing thousands of children?
{In an answer that has since been posted you said something to the effect of "that would depend on Klarion." So explicitly -were there mass child casualties that night? And if not, was it Klarion's intent that prevented it? If it was his intent, was that intent at all based in compassion?}
6- (outdated question- you've since explained the mechanics of it all making the answer here 'no'.)- In World Without Grownups the adult world was the original and kid one was a copy. By that logic only property damage on the adult world was permanent. Was that the case in Missing?
7- (Comment) I love that Wally took the Sippy cup as his souvenir it speaks volumes to his growing maturity. Though as a mom all I can think is, "I really hope that wasn't the kid's favorite."
Mmm… That makes me think; when I started watching Gargoyles and following this site I was in college. Now I'm married with two kids, (one who will need to be picked up in a moment…). It really behooves me to thanks you, and Gorbash and all the Station8 helpers and posters for years of enjoyment. Besides a like community of fantasy lovers, some of the best lessons of story craft I've had came from these shows and these pages. Like why it was important that it was clear that Elisa was never in danger from the start of Long Way to Morning. Or how you can have a great double entantdre (sorry, no French spell check) in a kids show if you actually make the first meaning solids enough to stand on it's own (Spidy). It has made me far more appreciative of and attentive to good entertainment. Thank you all.

{Even though it is a pain and annoyance to edit, repost and wait longer for a response, thanks also to the helpers who are culling the list to help make it more manageable. Now I still have a ton of reading to catch up on before posting any new questions or reviews so I'm guessing I won't have another question till at least 300 more are posted.}

Greg responds...

1a. I assume you're asking about her old friends from her old school. If so, yes.

1b. No.

1c. No.

1d. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

5a. People died. Kids were hurt or died. I don't know about "thousands", but more than a few.

5b. I don't think we made any attempt to hide how dark things were. The fates of Zatara and Zatanna were also meant to be symbolic for a whole lot of people.

7. Thank you. That's nice to hear (or read, I guess).

Jerome K Moore showed the character designs of the Appellaxians on his deviant art page.

http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=Appellaxian#/d501690

1.Are the names Gold Roc, Wood King, Stone God, and Crystal Creature the official canon names for each of the Appallaxians as shown in the character design?

2.Also was their a reason that you didn't include the Appallaxians Fire lord, Glass Man, or Mercury Monster? 7 on 7 would have been a more fair fight against the original League.

3. From reading his design process, it sounds like you give Moore a lot of hard work. You should probably give him a break sometime.

:P

Greg responds...

1. GOLDEN Roc, but, yes. Those were the names we used in our scripts.

2. Those three were part of the original battle, as Catherine implied. But those last three golems didn't survive as souvenirs.

I did my best scouring the AskGreg archives trying to look for this answer and I'm PRETTY sure it hasn't been asked. If it has, I totally apologize. :(

I was re-watching 'Deadly Force' and really got to thinking about Goliath coming so close to doling out 'justice' for Elisa when he thought she had died. My question is this:

1. If a clan member does commit a crime what do his/her clan mates do? I know the trios infraction in the first episode got them a night in the rookery, but what do modern day gargoyles do in order to 'punish' the gargoyle whose committed the crime?

2. If a gargoyle kills a person (justified or not), is their punishment strictly dispensed by their clan, or are they given up to the human authorities?

Greg responds...

1. It's unclear. The old BIG punishment of banishment is no longer too practical. We saw them imprison Demona in 'The Reckoning' - but that obviously didn't work out well.

2. This is too hypothetical to be answered without context.

2. Do you follow the one page=one minute rule of Hollywood filmmaking at all or is it fairly different?

3. Is it difficult to write stories for the series when you have to keep in mind the different powers of all the characters?

4. What is the average budget per episode?

Greg responds...

1. We shot for between 30 and 33 pages, and generally wound up between 30 and 36.

2. No. Because we break down way more shots in our script than in most live action scripts.

3. It's challenging, but I wouldn't say difficult.

I recently got to watch the first two episodes of Season Two of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" on YouTube (I hadn't seen them before now, since I don't have cable) and enjoyed them.

I noticed at the end the MasterPlanner's line to Kraven about "hunting in packs". While it works in its own right as a hint of things to come (presumably super-villain team-ups), I thought "pack" was appropriate. Kraven was hunting Spidey for the same reason that the Pack initially hunted the gargoyles - the "Most Dangerous Game" motive - and, like Wolf, had himself upgraded into a mutate (though feline rather than canine). He even got photographs of Spidey at the start of the episode from the MasterPlanner, just as the Pack got the photographs of Goliath at the start of "The Thrill of the Hunt". I don't know if the "hunting in packs" line was intended as a "Gargoyles" hommage or in-joke or not, but I liked it and thought it appropriate.

I am once again back, to first state how impressed I am with Invasion. I don't think anyone saw a five year time skip coming, especially after only one season, and it was handled beautifully for the show. Everything that is revealed about what has changed over the gap creates more questions, effectively keeping us hooked on finding out exactly what happened over five years.
The original members of the team now being seasoned veterans leading an expanded team is always something that feels cool to watch. I nerded over Dick's ascension to Nightwing and Barbara's joining of the team and I found the lack of status quo in Conner and M'Gann's relationship to be a good choice in character development. My initial prediction for where Wally and Artemis were was that Wally became Flash and Artemis was dead. I was extremely happy to be proven wrong when I watched Salvage. I do suspect they'll probably be suiting up again later in the season (what with Sportsmaster still playing an important role in The Light's plans) but I'm not about to ask for spoilers on that.
I'm happy with what you've done with Bumblebee. Her being The Atom's protege is an interesting idea and it really works. I also enjoy many aspects of Earth 16's Beast Boy, mainly his base form and relationship with M'Gann. Above all, though, I find myself liking Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle the most of the new additions to the team. His constant conflict with the Scarab AI makes for both good black comedy as well as some interesting character depth.
Well, once again, now that the wall of text is done with I shall ask my questions.
1) Given the Scarab's aggressive tendencies, does its influence ever keep Jaime from sleeping or eating?
2) Have M'Gann and J'onn removed Garfield's enthrallment to Queen Bee by the time of Happy New Years?
3) How fit have Wally and Artemis been keeping since their retirement from the team?
4) Kaldur made the statement "blood is thicker than sea-water" before launching his shoulder rocket at his former allies. Was this phrase meant to be offensive towards Atlanteans or simply as a light pun?
Once again, thank you for the opportunity to ask these questions. Young Justice continues to be one of my favorite shows of all time, animated or otherwise, and I eagerly await what is in store for the future.

2. Yes.

Greg,
I was wondering if there is any way you can talk to Cartoon Network and get them to change the advertisement for Young Justice. They keep showing the old team from season 1, and I think it's a bit misleading to those who don't know what's going on and such. I think it'd be better if they'd advertise with the new team instead, from season 2, ya know?
Thanks!

Hi Greg,
I have a few questions from the episode Beneath.

1. Was Tai Longshadow supposed to be based on the character Longshadow from the Justice League Unlimited series/ Apache chief from the Super Friends? Cuz i thought you were only using original comics characters, not original characters created for other TV series.

2. Was DC comics and Cartoon Network okay with you doing a story about domestic violence? Were they also okay with portraying Tai's mom as being compliant towards abuse towards her son and herself. Was there a reason you choose to make her so weak spirited?

3. What's with having Maurice pirating dvd's and videogames and how can anyone make money from that system? Most piraters distribute stuff online for free and make money by sharing links with their downloads. They don't put it onto a hard copy and distribute and sell it to people. (You are thinking of bootleggers and that profession is dying out). Maurice wouldn't have a customer demographic at all.
Most people who view/play illegal movies and games can get it online for free. If people wanted illegal versions, why would they pay Maurice, when they could get it for free?
Even if people aren't tech savvy, they have cheaper legal options. Most used dvd's sell for a few bucks anyway (I live near several stores that do nothing but sell used movies and games for a few bucks). And if given the choice between legally paying cheap for an actual DVD or paying nearly the same price for a hardcopy of a ripped DVD (from a shady guy with no accountability of whether it works and is illegal) people would choice to buy the used DVD's and games legally. How could he compete against that? Its a poor and ineffective business model. Plus, why are you still talking about DVD's, get with the times and move on to Blu-ray. You can buy a Playstation 3 relatively cheap these days (It plays blu-rays and would be fun for your kids. You can also play Young Justice Legacy on it when it comes out.)

4. Did you like my bunny?

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my questions. (I know these might be somewhat exhausting).

Enclosed: A funky dinosaur for your amusement.

Greg responds...

1. Yes. And I don't know where your misconception came from. We already introduced Wendy, Marvin and Mercy in Season One.

2. Cartoon Network's Brian Jones and Tramm Wigzell are great partners creatively and had no issue with how we were trying to handle the subject, i.e. with a certain amount of subtlety and sensitivity. Shelly was created to be a certain version of a real world mom in that situation that gave us what we needed for Ty's character.

3. I never said he was a smart criminal.

You mentioned that Wonder Woman became a superhero in 1941, when she was 16 years old. As Pinja said, that's no older than the physiologically oldest members of the Team (in 2011). At that age, I don't think that that many people would have taken her seriously enough to call her a "woman". So was "Wonder Woman" her first superhero name or did she start her superhero career being called "Wonder Girl"?

Greg responds...

It's an appealing notion, but I think it more likely that she was dubbed "Wonder Woman" by the press. Perhaps the first photo of her was taken at a distance, and they didn't realize how old she was or wasn't. (She is an Amazon, and was tall for her age.)

I have a whole slew of questions about Zeta-Beam transport. I doubt I can bring it down to five...

1. Why do the Cave and the Watchtower have two portals next to each other? Also, the Cave has two portals, and the Watchtower at least three. Is this for logistic reasons, or does the Watchtower have no elevators?
2. What's the maximum capacity of a tube? On multiple occasions, three people entered at the same time. Could the entire League fit, or is that why there's two portals next to each other?
3. Because we'll possibly never definitively learn with the time skip, and the comics won't reach December for another two years: was Rocket's designation B09?
4. In Misplaced, Billy had to speak an override code before being scanned, but on all other instances (the phone booth, the TARDIS, the main portals) the computer scanned people as soon as they were in range. What if a stranger entered the booth, would he/she be scanned?
5. Is the Manhattan portal under the bridge in "Secrets" only an exit? It doesn't look practical for an entrance.

Greg responds...

1. Why do some buildings have multiple elevators? To handle the traffic.

1a. The Watchtower has elevators.

2. I'm sure there's a limit. It also has to do with the number of destinations.

3. Yes. (Which I'm NOT revealing here. It was already revealed in the comics.)

4. Scans take place automatically, silently and without any visible sign that they are taking place. If the computer doesn't recognize the subject (as with Billy in "Misplaced") it says nothing, unless a code is spoken, asking for a follow-up scan.

5. It's both.

Hi, Greg, quick question. As season two goes on, i can't help but notice Megan's radically different personality. She's no longer the slightly naive Hello Megan fangirl, and is instead alot darker, thinking nothing of labotimizing others for her own gain.
First of all, why does no one call her out on it. Martian Manhunter was right there, telepathically linked the guy to boot.
Second, does her self-acceptance have something to do with this? In season one we see her afraid of having the others see her as a monster, but, now that she knows she doesn't have to worry about it anymore, is she now turning into one?
If I see you've answered this, then thanks a ton! If you don't, well, do it anyway ;). Thanks!

First of all, if you look carefully, you'll see that Manhunter had severed his link just before Miss Martian did her thing.

In season 1 once in a while Aqualad or Artemis would get an episode even Wally but Wally and robin barely did anything. Now we skip into season 2 and Wally is retired and Grayson is team leader but only seems to make cameo apperances. You mentioned season 3 if it happens will have another time skip i assume Nightwing will probably be gone but i was just hoping that the guy would actually have important story lines before he is gone. Hi again greg, If I remember correctly, it's been established that Martians age 1 year for every 3 earth years, New gods from Apocolips and New genesis are ageless, Lords of chaos and order are ageless, Amazons are immortal and Superboy currently can't age visibly.
1. This made me wonder if there were any other aliens or metahumans that age at a different rate than humans or have a longer lifespan, such as maybe Rannians, Genomorphs and Clayface since he got his powers from overexposure to the Lazarous pits.
2. Back in infiltrator, Robin used an override code to get past the security at Wyne Tech. If I'm correct, the code RG4 consists of his initials (Richard Grayson)and 4 would either mean that he's the 4th person to have a similar override code or he has 3 more for other uses. If it's the first case, would the 3 other people be Bruce Wayne, Lucius Fox and Alfred Pennyworth?
3. In the episode Salvage, when Superboy said he could relate to the Appellaxian Golem when it said through blue beetle that it wanted to end the pain and essentially destroy itself, does that imply Superboy has contemplated suicide at one point? I just want to be sure about whether or not that was the case.
Thank you for your time and I hope the long queue isn't too tough on you.

Greg responds...

Amazons are only immortal (i.e. unaging) on Themyscira. If they leave the island, they age normally.

1. I'm sure there are, but I'm not going to go down a list. Clayface though is kept alive by a morphic field. This may grant him a certain immortality as long as the field survives. No telling whether or not the field may break down over time.

2. Possibly...

3. The "noise" that came with "birth" was the part of the Golem's speech that Superboy identified with.

Now there is news of the Avengers series being cancelled , to be replaced with a show of similar tone than ultimate spiderman, with the reason that Marvel wants a show focused on stand alone episodes than storyarcs. My question is, why great shows, that respect their source material with great voice acting and stories get cancelled, while other shows that talk down to their audience and have weak story lines are still on the air? Dear Greg,

Wow, the newest episode of YJ was great! I goota say, props to you and Brandon for coming up with a way to get Roy's addicted look without the addiction. Very nice. And thank you for showing Wally & Artemis, I was worried they might have switched sides or been killed or something. I thought it was sweet (and Artemis looks good in a jersey). Also, i like someone discovering the scarab talks to Jaime, and you even got in a reference to Ted Kord! Thank you! Please keep up the awesome!

First of all, as a huge fan of DC comics lore, I want to thank you so much for including so much of DC's history in your show. It makes the show so much more enjoyable for me.

I was wondering how the writers choose the characters that are showcased in the show. I noticed you included a lot of lesser known characters in the DC universe such as Lagoon Boy, Blue Beetle and so on. How do the writers pick and choose with such a huge who's who list of superheroes and supporting characters to choose from?

Greg responds...

I don't think Blue Beetle would still be considered "lesser known".

Mostly, this question is ASKED AND ANSWERED. We had a "huge... list". We gave a great deal of thought to juggling powers, backstories, personalities, etc.

First off, I just wanted to thank you for being a part of what makes superhero cartoons awesome. I'm loving Young Justice/Invasion so far, and each episode just gets better.

I've just got one random question to ask that's been on my mind:

Did Dick go through a phase of resenting being Bruce's sidekick like in some continuities or has he always been happy to be a part of the Batfamily no matter what costume he wears?

Greg responds...

I'm not saying it was always 100% conflict free, but largely they're good, and have never had a major falling out. Resentment isn't really Dick's style.

Why did Wally decide to stop being a hero? Did Nightwing try to persuade him to continue with him?

Greg responds...

1. It's complicated. There isn't one single reason, one single event. It's cumulative. It involves things that took place over the five year gap (SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.), his relationship with Artemis and his general maturing as a human being. A choice to leave behind things that seemed extremely important to him as a child - and not so important as an adult. Also, keep in mind, Wally didn't decide to stop being a hero. Wally and Artemis together decided to stop being heroes.

2. Nightwing wants what's best for his friend. I'm not saying they didn't have a conversation or two. Or six. Or whatever, but...

Hi Greg,
This isn't a question, so I understand that it might be deleted, but I have no other way of contacting you, so I thought I might give it a shot.
I just wanted to thank you for an amazing show. You and Brandon have done an amazing job, along with everyone else who works on Young Justice. It's beautifully done, and I love it to the point of perhaps unhealthy obsession, but I like to think I'm just a really, really, really big fan.
I'm sure you don't remember this, but I came to your signing on Free Comic Book Day at Meltdown Comics, and I just wanted to let you know that that was a truly amazing moment for me. You are one of my biggest heroes, and the Young Justice issue you signed along with the photo my dad took of me with you are now two of my most prized possessions.
I can't wait for the rest of the season, and I'd just like to let you know that you have made one thirteen-year-old girl very, very, very, very happy.
And one more thing that actually is a question:
In an interview with IGN, you said: "Tune in and give us some huge ratings! Who knows, maybe it'll happen? Maybe we'll get that third season sooner than later!"
Where could we give you huge ratings, or who could we write to strongly advise that you get a third season?
Thanks for answering all these questions and being so patient with us!
P.S. You and Vic also did a great job on Mecha-nation! It's amazing!

Greg responds...

Thank you for the very kind words.

I do remember that Meltdown moment.

Ratings are determined at time of viewing. Really by people with Nielson boxes in their homes, though in theory, the more people watching, the more Nielson people watching. You can always express your fondness for the show directly to Cartoon Network.

Thanks again.

Dear Mr. Greg and Whoever Else May Be Credited With The Writing For "Salvage":

I absolutely loved this week's episode. "Salvage" has, in tumblr terms, provided "so many feels" for many shippers of the Spitfire (Wally/Artemis) and CheshRoy (Cheshire/Roy) pairing supporters; those "feels" were multiplied even more with the introduction of Lian.

I LOVE that Wally and Artemis are still together after 5 years and are a cute, loving couple. I LOVE that Lian has been born and that Jade seems to be doing her best to not only fix up Roy, but to have some stability in her family for the sake of her daughter. I also LOVE that she and Roy were married.

Once again, thank you. Words cannot express any more of what I am feeling, but let me just say that all throughout this morning I had to stop myself from involuntarily smiling at the thought of this episode.

Keep up the AWESOME work. :)

Thank you.

OMG! I just LOVED today episode! "Salvage". I thought for sure that the hero that had "fallen from grace" would have been Kaldar considering what happened last week but I was just as glad to see Roy come back into the picture! Now everything is complete and all my questions have been answered! I know what Roy's doing and what happened to Wally and Artemis! I LOVE the fact that after 5 years that they're still together! Now my mind can rest. It's been driving me CRAZY for the last 3 weeks to know what happened to Wally and Artemis, I already knew that Kaldar would be making a showing and that he now had a Black Manta connection but not knowing what was going on with Wally and Artemis was making me nuts. I figured that they'd be in school since it didn't seam that they had passed on (some people thought that Artemis would have gone bad but I figured that that wasn't true. You went through the trouble of having this Artemis of Earth-16 go down the hero path instead of a villainess one and in "Unusual Suspects" had her reveal her family connections to her friends and her finally being able relax and find acceptance I found it highly unlikely that her future would swing the other direction...) I hope to see them again! They're so cute together!

Now I can wait for the upcoming episodes in peace. ^_~

But on to my questions these are regarding Miss Martian and Superboy and their aging processes.

Now M'Gann is approached as having been of an equivalent of "16" in season 1, and Martian Manhunter mentioned that she was 48 earth years old. Now 48 divided by 16 equals 3 so what I was wondering was:

1. Does M'Gann age at a Martian emotional and physical equivalent so that every 3 earth years of ageing and development for her is the equivalent of 1 human year? So instead of her being "21" she's more like "17 and 3/4"? Almost "18"?

Now Superboy. He was force grown to 16 years in 16-weeks, and he can't visibly age on the outside. But he can age internally / physically on the inside. So it can't be said that he's "21" like Kaldar and Wally are.

1. So does this mean that at some point internally he'll be elderly with all the negatives that with it but sill look like a 16-year-old hottie?

If so that really is a "standard blessing and curse".

2. Exactly where is his age in the emotional sense since that's the only "ageing / maturity" that would be visible?

3. How old is Superboy internally? He was force grown to 16 years in 16 weeks. So does his body think that it's 16 in season 1 and 21 in season 2 or does it read it's self as younger since he's only almost 6 chronologically?

PS: I loved the "You freshman never do the homework." Statement that Conner made.

I also noticed that in the last episode that Superman called Conner, Kon-El. That made me happy too. Although the caption on my TV said 'Conner' instead. Like in "Earthlings" when Conner says that he doesn't visibly age, the captions said physically age. Which means two entirely different things. Not visibly aging means that you can't see the aging, but that it is occurring. Not physically aging usually equates immortality.

4. Dose it annoy you when closed captions get things wrong like that?

One word that seams to give a similar impression like visible and physical can give a person 2 distinct understandings, and in this case it would be the wrong one.

Greg responds...

a. Yes, she's the biological equivalent of an 18-year-old, give or take, by Martian standards. Of course, that has nothing to do with how old she chooses to look as a shape-changer.

b. Yes.

1. Yes.

2. That's a matter of opinion.

3. I don't think his body is quite as obsessed with numbers.

c. Yes, captions are notoriously unreliable. Which is a shame. (I don't know why they don't work off the scripts.)

4. A lot.

d. Agreed.

Greg, I'm a big fan of Young Justice, and I think it's really great that you are willing to answer questions about your creations like this. I have 3 questions:

1)In "Salvage", Artemis and Wally go to school in Palo Alto. Is this meant to imply that they attend Stanford? I ask because I figure you won't be mentioning an actual university on the show.

2)Also in "Salvage", Red Arrow's apartment appears very similar to the apartment at the end of the "Under the Red Hood" movie. I'm guessing you recycled the animation to save money, but did you intend it to be a nod at the Jason Todd/Roy Harper Outlaws, or was it just coincidence?

3)In "Targets", during the scene outside Happy Harbor High School, there is a moment where 4 people wearing logos on their shirts are lined up as follows: Superman ("S"), the high school ("H"), Flash (a vertical lightning bolt), and Batman (which in this case looks a bit like a "T"). Was this meant to resemble a certain 4 letter word that would be inappropriate for a cartoon, or was it just a coincidence? I laughed when I saw it because it's pretty clever.

Anyway, thanks again for such a great show. I hope you get many more seasons!

Greg responds...

Voice Actor fan writes...

Hi Mr Weisman, I read your response a while back about how you pay your voice actors for their roles and after watching the episode 3 of season 2 I realized something. I noticed that Aquaman is voiced by Phil Lamar who previously voiced Green lantern John Stewart in Justice League, where as you have Kevin Michael Richardson voicing him. I was just wondering if you were aware of the fact and if, when first auditioning actors, thought about getting some of the previous actors to reprise their previous roles. I know that in some of the direct to DVD movies some of the former cast from previous works did voice the same character again.

Greg responds...

We didn't audition any Justice Leaguer except Superman. (And only him, because we wanted an actor who could play both Superboy and Superman.)

I am very aware of who played characters in the past, and we LARGELY chose to AVOID direct comparisons to previous works by NOT using the same actor in the same role. There were a few exceptions, such as Bruce Greenwood's Batman, where we felt the actor wasn't already over-identified with the part. But for the major leads from the old Justice League/Justice League Unlimited series, the truth is that if they played the role there, it all but eliminated our interest in having them play the rolls in YJ.

Hey Greg -- big fan of Young Justice and especially the Season 2 time skip. I found that Season 2 has colored my view of Season 1. The Season 1 episodes seem more poignant -- almost tragic in hindsight, knowing where some of the characters end up. But seeing a character like Robin grow up is like watching a nephew get older. One second they're a toddler, and a few blinks later they're 18 -- time flies!

I'm also impressed by the fact that the early YJ episodes are actually better in the context of the entire series. I find that many serial shows negate their earlier episodes when mysteries are solved and long-running plotlines come to a head. Young Justice is definitely NOT one of those shows.

Anyway, I remember reading an interview in which you stated you had about 7 months of development time on Young Justice. Here's my question:

1) How much of the series (Season 1, 2 and more) was conceived during this phase (plotting, characterization, designwork) and how much came after you got the greenlight?

Thanks -- you and your crew rock!

Greg responds...

1. All the plotting of Season One and most of the basic ideas for Season Two came during this period. Design work for the main teens (Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, Artemis, Speedy/Red Arrow) and some adults (Red Tornado, Black Canary, Batman, Superman, Mister Twister, plus a few more) were done - though not final. General characterization also done.

Hey Greg, in the comics Icon had his own spaceship. I was wondering why, when the 6 (well, 8) leaguers go to stand trial on Rimbor, they have John Stewart create a ship from light instead of using Icon's ship? I suppose a few possibilities are that he doesn't have a ship on Earth-16 (although the line about him being familiar with interstellar law implies that he probably does have one), or that it isn't big enough for 8 people. Anyway, I was just curious to see if you had an official explanation. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Mr. Greg Weisman,

I'd like to say that as much as I respect the old DC cartoons shows (the ones which were collectively known as the DC Animated Universe), I feel that Young Justice has, thus far, done MUCH, MUCH better in many ways (which would be too much for me too list). I am enjoyed the fact this parallel DC Universe, better known as Earth-16, is similar to the mainstream DC universe, and yet, you are always finding numerous ways to create so many unique twists in the characters and the storylines. It makes it very exciting to watch. I'll let you know that, as I might have said in some postings, that I am continuously praying to God every night that Cartoon Network be very generous to you and renew Young Justice for future seasons. A show as good as Young Justice should never, EVER, end.

Thanks for taking the time to read about how I feel about Young Justice so far. As always, keep up the great work!

Thanks for your kind words. I'd happily continue doing this series ad infinitum.

1. Although he's amoral and generally has a commitment to self-preservation, why did Puck return to help Xanatos against Oberon "against [his] better judgement"?

Was it simply because he was impressed by Xanatos' choice to have him serve him for life instead of being granter a wish? I considered this, but then I thought it unlikely that Owen would have left Xanatos in the first place instead of returning after some consideration to stand at David's side.

2. Why DID David Xanatos choose Puck as a life-long servant instead of a wish? Wasn't he after immortality?

I noticed in another series of children's books called The Sisters Grimm that the author, Michael Buckley, also had Puck as a main character, only he has the form of a 12 year old and seems to have the mindset of one. He also has a pair of pink insect wings (despite still being a shape-shifter) that he isn't ashamed of at all.

He's written in a way that makes me believe he could have been your version of Puck at a younger age, though he is considered in that series to be the literal child of Oberon and Titania (Oberon's children, haha).

What's more is that King Oberon and Queen Titania live in Manhatten, New York City. I can't help but wonder if there's some of the Gargoyle show's influence at work here.

1. Were you aware of this series and its similarities?

2. Did you ever exchange words with Michael Buckley?

3. Do you think it's possible he watched your show, Gargoyles, or more likely that it was a coincidence?

Your rendition of Puck really rekindled an interest of fairy lore in me, especially since I love tricksters and their amoral personalities that make them so complex. I love how you never know if they'll do something 'good' or 'bad' to someone else simply on a whim, and you portrayed that so well.

I read a previous answer of yours to someone else that said you didn't want to label Puck, Oberon, and Titania as 'faeries' because of the pejorative connotations that the word has. I realize and empathize with you about how fairies are often thought of as nothing more than pretty little girls with butterfly wings or something to that effect, who wave magic wands to grant wishes and always do good. Makes me sick.

1. Is that why you didn't have Puck, Oberon and Titania portrayed with fairy wings despite their status in their original play?

2. If so, why bother to have Puck fly around at all, let alone with fairy dust trailing behind him?

There's a show I recently learned of called Durarara!! in which a Dullahan (technically a sort of fairy) comes to Tokyo to find her missing head, taking the form of a black-wearing motorcyclist and transferring her headless horse's spirit into a pitch black motobike. To hide the fact she has no head, she wears a full helmet and tries to blend in with the city, acting as a transporter and courier for gangs and info brokers, forcing fans to reconsider their initial mental image of a typical fairy.

I think if you had recognized that Puck and the others were Fae, it just might have saved the Fae's tainted, modern day reputation, considering how well-known and admired the Gargoyles show is. However, I understand respect the choices you made, and it was pretty much obvious who they were in the long run.

Greg responds...

1. "Despite"? Most of the versions I've seen are wingless.

2. Uh... it looked cool?

I don't recall saying no to the words "faery", "fairy" or "fae" because of perjorative connotations. I think the point I was making is that Oberon and Titania were "larger" than that. The Children of Oberon include those creatures traditionally associated with the "fae" but also various pantheons, etc.

Hey Greg, big fan here! First I'd like to say that, though unexpected (and probably because of that), I really liked the time skip. I was REALLY hoping to see Tim Drake, but I thought it would take too much time and maybe the series wouldn't make it. Seeing Nightwing too is great, and the relationship the 2 'robins' have is awesome! I was very pleased with the way each Robin was approached! Hoping to see more!
So, I have a few questions, and I'm not really sure if they are spoilers because they're tricky, unclear things that may or may not be explained in the future. If they turn out to be spoilers, I sincerely apologize.
1. Does Ra's al Ghul know Batman's secret identity like he does in the comics? What about Vandal Savage (in Justice League: Doom he did, I don't know if he does in the comics)?
2. Does The Light know Roy Harper's secret identity? I'm guessing they do, but then why haven't they found out Green Arrows?
3. Are you involved in the writing of the tie-in comics?
I like the Light being so subtle, but don't they consider knowing their enemies identites as a means to destroy or at least having advantage over them? The classic 'hurt the loved ones' move in case they're desperate? It probably wasn't their plan and it turned out well against Kaldur! I would certainly consider it! Thanks!

Hi Greg:

I have a few questions that pertain particularly to Amazo. As I believe his story is over, I'm hoping none of these questions will run afoul of the spoiler rules.

1. Amazo's powers appear to be based on technology (when he replicated the Canary cry, there was a sonic cannon in his mouth. Given this, would he have been able to replicate powers that are hard to replicate with technology, such as the Green Lantern ring, Martian Manhunter's telepathy (he didn't mind-read Superboy's intentions when he was accessing Martian Manhunter), or Zatarra's incantations?

2. It was never shown on-screen, but does Amazo also have the attendant weaknesses when he is accessing a specific hero (say, Kryptonite to Superman or fire to Martian Manhunter)?

3. Given that Professor Ivo was revealed to be a Light agent, why didn't he build more Amazos to do all that work on Rimbor? Wouldn't it have been easier to do so, than to try to infest the League and the Team?

4. The Amazo display in the Hall of Justice museum (in Alienated) has an intact head. Is this a replica of the original? If it is a benign replica, why is it shown in a disassembled state?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

1. These are fair questions, but I'm not sure I know the answer. But I'm going to say... yes, some powers are more difficult to copy than others. For example, even though he encountered Green Arrow, we didn't show him shooting arrows... because he didn't have access to a bow.

2. I'm going to say no. Unless the weakness is inherent in the power, i.e. density-shifting around an invulnerable solid object.

3. How is that easier let alone convincing?

4. It's the real thing. So obviously, another Amazo was built during the timeskip.

First thing's first: give credit where credit is due. Congratulations on the completion of Season 1. What an action packed final two episodes! I was very disappointed when CN decided not to air them back to back. I was literally sitting on pins and needles for a week between "Usual Suspects" and "Auld Acquaintance." The revelations, the fight sequences, the plot! Everything was incredible. You and your entire team deserve a pat on the back.

Now, onto Season 2. I'll admit, after the opening segment, I was completely thrown for a loop. I did not expect a time skip like that. A few days, possibly. 5 years, absolutely not. I had believed that it would be way to soon to make that kind of a risky move. So when I saw it happen, I was naturally very worried. Now, three episodes in, I am pleased to say that I have officially been drawn into the new season and am anxious to see where the story goes from here.

I suppose the concern came from my love of all things Dick Grayson. He is my favorite hero of all time. It's been a long time since we've seen a young Dick tackling the streets of Gotham as Robin the Boy Wonder (last series that covered Dick as Robin for an extended period of time was "The Batman"). Seeing him advance to Nightwing so soon made me nervous, seeing as he usually becomes less of a focus whenever Tim Drake comes onto the scene. There were so few Dick moments last season (well, in comparison to the others, at least) that I didn't want to see who I believe is the best DC character get shoved to the sidelines too soon, but seeing as he's Team leader, obviously not gonna happen.

So, onto my question: Were you prepared for the audience's reaction to Season 2? Or has all the negativity towards the time skip surprised you?

Greg responds...

Okay, so (a) I don't agree that Dick got short shrift last season and (b) not that there hasn't been some negativity, but in general it hasn't been that bad, and mostly the response has been positive, particularly among those who were willing to be a little patient and give us a few episodes to show that it was still the show they had come to love.

Hi Greg! Thanks for answering our questions!!

In the comic book world, Superman's ability to freeze things can be fully explained by the "Joule-Thomson effect" in physics - Where the release of highly compressed air through a valve (such as pursed lips) causes it to drop radically in temperature. (Wikipedia!)
With HIS level of muscle strength doing the exhaling, he could freeze things easily.

Also, a major by-product of invulnerability should be that his lungs are alot tougher than normal humans and even other superhumans. So logically, his lungs should be able to COMPRESS and store much more air than normal people because he can handle higher levels of air pressure.

Sometime last year, you said the reason why Superman doesn't have his freeze breath in your show was because it wasn't believable enough.
It's a very fair point and i do respect your opinion, but which part was it exactly that's not believable?

In a way, his freeze breath can be explained by real-world science better than his heat vision. :)

That's my fanboy moment done!!!
Thanks for your time. Your doing a brilliant job.

Greg responds...

Yeah... I'm still not buying it.

I buy heat vision (for Superman, not Superboy) because the guy is solar-powered, and who's to say what Kryptonian eyes are like.

But the ability for a lung to compress air just doesn't play for me. Volume is limited. So being able to take in enough volume of air to create "super-breath" isn't working for me. And the ability for pursed lips to than take this "compressed air" (which again I'm not buying into) and "valve" it into something truly freezing still isn't working for me.

And that's on top of the fact, that it's just too goofy for me visually and conceptually.

Mr. Greg,

Quick question after reading some of your responses (which seem to ba all over the place on this issue)...when recreating a charicter that has a firmly established history in the DCu (as apposed to say Lagoon boy, who existed but didnt even have a real name until now), how MUCH of that history - if any - do you feel "obligated" (for lack of a better word) to include "nods" to that history?
For instance...and if this seems like a spoiler question, im sure you can think of another example that isnt...the Clark/Lois relationship is practically written in DC stone (as it should be!)...basically my question is: are you the kind of writer that respects the CHARACHTER when writing them, only what you petsonally like about them from the past, or do you like "leave your own mark" even if that means totally reimagining them?
Using the Clark/Lois idea as a beromiter, where do you stand? (ie, if you would never change anything THAT iconic, where do you draw the line?
Thank you for your time.

Greg responds...

I have no interest in "leaving my own mark" and every interest in trying to get to the core of each individual character and portraying them with (what I see as my version of the) truth.

The trouble, of course, is that most of these characters have decades of continuity, created and supervised by dozens of individuals that weren't always in perfect synch with each other or - frankly - even with the character.

So, yes, Brandon and Phil and I get to make choices about what we believe is "right" for any given character. Keeping what's essential. Leaving out what may not be, and ditching what we flat-out feel doesn't work. There's no doubt that my personal biases come into play. (NO SUPER-COLD BREATH EVER!) But I try to be as objective as possible (given what a subjective topic we're dealing with here) about what plays to the core of each character.

But events in a pre-established comic book continuity, i.e. "a firlmly established history" are more up for grabs. We're in a different parallel universe, and some things did happen... and some did not. And some things that never happened in comic book continuity DID happen on Earth-16. I'd hope the character's responses to any given event would be on target, whether or not the event happened in DC's (many) pre-existing continuities.

Relationships are even more complicated. I'm not going to guarantee any character exists on Earth-16 that hasn't been seen or mentioned in canon. So how can I guarantee a relationship between two characters, when one might not exist? But to use your example, we've seen in the comics that Lois exists. And of course Superman exists. So then the question is what if any relationship do they have and does it match up with continuity. And the answer is... YES. But what does that mean? Superman and Lois have (since 1938) had all sorts of different relationships at all sorts of different stages, ranging from strangers to marriage. And both have, at times, dated other people. So I would try to be true to BOTH characters, but I'm not going to guarantee where they are in their relationship at this moment in time.

Later today, Danica McKellar, Nolan North, Vanessa Marshall, Phil LaMarr and Lacey Chabert.

Plus more later in the week.

It's been a lot of fun. It's a little weird - given YJ's usual modus operandi - to record one actor at a time, but that's how they do it in the gaming world. Too bad there's no Lucas Carr in this game. (I could use the scratch, you know.) ;)

1. On Earth 16, does the whole concept of "if an Amazon is bound to a man, she loses her powers" still true?

2. In the comics there's various versions as to why Amazons wear the cuffs/silver bracelets, why do Amazons wear them on Earth 16 (besides using them to dodge bullets and what not...I mean does it have to do with a reminder to be enslaved...or something of the like?)

(sorry if these are questions asked but not responded to but there's over a 1000 of those...and I just finished going through over 200 related Wondy posts...)

Greg responds...

1. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

2. DITTO.

In Season 1's "Infiltrator", I noticed that Miss Martian's eyes glowed red while she lifted Kid Flash out of the pool. So far in Season 2, her eyes are glowing green whenever she uses her powers.

My questions:

1) Does a red glow mean telepathic inexperience?

2) Can her teammates see the colour of the eye glow as well? Or is it used to tell the audience that she's using her powers?

Greg responds...

1. Um... maybe.

2. Yes, they can.

Nobody Liked Jason Todd Anyway writes...

Greetings people of the past. I am from 5 years in your future. I traveled to this backwater time period to warn you of the perils you will face in the next 75 months. I cannot go into the specifics on what led to this tumultuous point in human history. But I have traced the cause and have determined that it was the unfortunate decision to skip 5 years ahead in the Young Justice cartoon. The International League of 'Shippers will launch a massive attack on The Legion of Timeskip Apologists and the resulting battles will tear the DC Nation apart. There will be mass hysteria. People painting finger stripes on their hands. People holding large crowds hostage at Power Ring point until Weisman and Vietti tells them, once and for all, the exact age, astrological signs and favorite foods of everyone in the DC Universe. The streets will run red (blue, yellow, purple, green and sometimes puce) with cartoon ink. It will be CHAOS. Skip backwards 5 years in the Young Justice storyline before all is lost and may The Spectre have mercy on your souls. (Drink Slurm™)

Greg responds...

I'm probably less amused than you were hoping I'd be.

You must see that even if Brandon and I suddenly agreed that the timeskip was a mistake - and we don't - there was literally NO WAY at the time you posted this that we could have taken it back. Not unless you didn't want to see ANY episodes for another year.

That's not me being an "Apologist". That's just me stating facts. We did the timeskip. We liked the timeskip. By the time you found out about it, it was way too late to do anything but go forward. WAY to late.

And of course, as of this moment, literally the entire first two seasons are now in the can. DONE. FINITO. No turning back now. And by the way, I wouldn't want to.

I searched through many of the unanswered questions using the Find-feature and couldn't find this one so forgive me if you'd already answered it by now, but:

If Roy Harper's clone was Speedy for 3 years before becoming Red Arrow, this me means he must have been 14-to-15 when he replaced the original Roy Harper. In YJ:I, we learned through Superboy that the Cadmus clones cannot age. So how did Roy Harper's clone go from being approximately 14/15 to the 17/19 year old we know as Red Arrow? All this while Superboy spent 5 years without aging.

Can Red Arrow age? If so, what makes him different than Superboy?

Greg responds...

NO, we did NOT learn "that the Cadmus clones cannot age". We learned that SUPERBOY doesn't visibly age. That's a result of his specific origins. It has nothing to do with the various clones of Roy Harper.

Alex Roggio writes...

The Justice League in the comics seemed more like an American organization while the Justice League you presented in Young Justice is an International organization with U.N. approval that operates all over the world. I like this version of the Justice League, but I wonder why all the members are based in United States.

1. Sure, Wonder Woman is from the Amazons, Superman is from Krypton, Martian Man Hunter is from Mars, Hawkman and Hawkwoman are from God-knows-where, but they are all based in America. Why aren't there any African, European, South American or Asian heroes in the supposedly international Justice League?

2. In a world where there are so many ways to become a superhero, how come China, Russia, Japan, India, Spain, Italy, Egypt and others haven't had superheroes who could join the Justice League? And how come the U.N. accepted them so easily knowing they were ALL American heroes? Having American citizens serving as worldwide policemen must be uncomfortable for most countries.

3. Also, there are a lot of evil villains with different countries of origin that have appeared on the show like Count Vertigo, Vandal Savage, Bane, Ra's Al Ghul and Queen Bee, but you haven't presented any superhero from any other country at all. Why is that? And even if there were one, why isn't there more?

4. One final question concerning the same issue. Why did the Green Lantern Corps choose three American citizens to defend Earth? I'm not trying to disrespect John Stewart, Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan, but there certainly has to be a lot of willful and heroic people across the globe that could do wonders with a Green Lantern ring. Why these three? And why all from USA?

Thank you for giving the time to answer these questions and many others! Love the site. Thanks.

Greg responds...

1. Okay, I think this is simultaneously a legit question and a bit of a specious one. To some extent, you know the answer already. We weren't going to ditch out on the greatest heroes of the DC Universe simply because they're all based in the U.S. (Though if I wanted to nitpick, I could say that Aquaman absolutely is not, and that we haven't established where the Hawks are based on Earth or whether Wonder Woman is currently based in the U.S. or elsewhere.) I'm not saying that DC doesn't have international heroes to choose from, but they aren't the classic ones that we were using to create a pantheon in contrast to our teens. As the series progresses (especially given enough episodes and/or issues), we'll be introducing more heroes from across the globe. As for an in-Universe answer, let's just say that the League was formed by seven American base heroes who came together to face an alien threat on American soil. Currently, America is where most of the heroes live. Just as America is (or at least until very recently was) where most baseball, basketball and (American) football players live. These things spread, but not overnight. And, all things considered - source material, especially - I think our series is more diverse than most.

2a. See the answer(s) to question 1.

2b. Who said they accepted them easily?

3. See above.

4. We haven't seen Kyle on this series. Only Hal, John and Guy. But keep in mind, the Corps didn't pick the Lanterns. The RINGS chose the Lanterns. And proximity was absolutely a factor.

He was so calm and level headed, it just doesn't make since to me that he would have allowed the secret about his father and the death of Tula to affect him that much. I liked him as team leader, it showed that a different kind of person could be leader in the superhero world ... but alas, i digress.

I don't think you're digressing. You're just sort of... jumping the gun. By now, you should have a better view of the big picture.

But anyway, loved the episode. I enjoyed seeing the interaction between the Bat-Family, Connor & Clark, Cassie & Diana. Very cool. and I'm starting to really like Jaime & the scarab arguing. Am I correct in assuming he hasn't told anyone the scarab telepathically talks to him? Oh yeah, I like the foreshadowing of "The Competitor". I imagine that the venom formula has changed in the intervening period (because his eyes go bloodshot in Usual Suspect, which doesn't happen in Drop-Zone), but having completely opposite reactions is fairly odd for a chemical that's supposed to have a consistent effect. The Truth about Ask Greg

Here is my manifesto:

I will not lie to you on ASK GREG.

Except by omission. I have, do and will continue to lie to you by omission whenever the need arises, I find it's politically expedient or I'm just in that kind of mood.

I will cheerfully - even gleefully - misdirect you, i.e. while technically telling the truth, I may consciously play to known biases and lead you down your own garden path. I may then lurk on other sites and chortle if I see my misdirection has been effective. I may also then get annoyed.

I will - hopefully not too often - answer sarcastically. I will make smartass responses, which are technically NOT true, but which I believe from context are obviously false, and thus should not be regarded as untruths in that any reasonable person will know that I was pulling legs. I will be the only arbiter of whether or not I am lying or kidding, in these cases.

I will, of course, be mistaken on occasion. Flat-out incorrect or wrong, even. If alerted to my errors I will endeavor to correct them. Obviously, I don't see being mistaken as willfully lying.

But with all the above caveats as givens, I promise that I will not intentionally make any untrue statements here on this website. I WILL NOT LIE TO YOU DIRECTLY.

Except on April Fool's Day. On April 1st, I'll lie my ass off.

This is a question that recently popped into my head about a year ago. One that I've never heard asked before...

Superman like many heroes wears his suit underneath his civilian clothing but this is something that has just occurred to me.

1. When he changes where does the cape go? The thing is SO LONG it's like mid-calf.

PS: I appreciate the opportunity to be able to ask a creator of a series questions like this. It's something that I've always wanted to be able to do. Ask a creator of something that I'm a fan of why they did something, or how they felt about it. So thank you for giving us fans the opportunity to be able to have a dialogue with you. It is VERY much appreciated.

Also I hope this series is able to last past a second season and beyond, I knew when I saw the premise that it would create a fault in the fan base. Unforeseen slightly radical changes in a series usually either go love/hate. I just hope there are more fans like me out there that aren't so thrown when developments like this occur and have enough faith in creators and writers like you that you know what you're doing to wait for the smoke to clear before deciding whether they really truly like it or not. Sure Artemis, Wally, and Kaldar were missing. But the fact that they were main characters in the first season surely would mean that they wouldn't disappear without a trace and never be spoken of again. Patience is a virtue that many fans need to learn.

Greg responds...

I'm not sure Clark DOES wear his costume under his clothes all the time. He might just be a SUPER-FOLDER. I'm way more concerned about where Clark puts his glasses when he's Superman.

YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION: EPISODE: 210: "Before the Dawn": Premieres: this Saturday, October 13th as part of Cartoon Network's DC Nation block. (It repeats Sunday too.) Check local listings for times.

Keep in mind, this tenth episode of Season Two was plotted before we knew if we'd get the second half of the season. Once we got that pick-up, we assumed this would be our hiatus episode. Instead, we took the break after 207 (which was a great and exciting stopping point, so no complaints). But nothing changed about our story in 210. This is a significant episode on every level: plot, character and LOTS of action. Don't miss it!

I'm posting this reminder a couple days early, because I'm leaving this afternoon to head up to Ashland, Oregon for the Shakespeare Festival. But believe me, my DVR is set to record both YJ and Green Lantern.

There are times when Kaldur is intentionally posing as/standing in for his father, in which case, he's actively trying to fool the opposition into calling him Black Manta (or Manta for short). Other times, no such subterfuge is being attempted, and he's generally referred to as .... drumroll... Kaldur'ahm, i.e. his name. Some folks still refer to him as Aqualad, of course, which is natural.

Quick question what made you decide to make superman and superboy's relationship like brothers instead of father and son; no problem with it it just seems odd, since it changed the already established "father/son" dynamic? In season 1 batman says to superman "the boy needs his father" and in alienated superman calls superboy "little brother" and in the comics they were played off as 'Cousins'.

Greg responds...

I can't speak for the comics, at all.

But I think the whole father/son thing was part of the problem for Superman. When he readjusted his thinking (sometime during the time skip) to regard Superboy as a little brother, it all straightened out fairly easily for both of them.

Ultimately, I believe in a Superman who isn't perfect, but is deep-down, fundamentally, a good guy. He may not have been ready to 'parent' a clone that was created without his knowledge or consent, but he could be a big brother to that clone.

Mr. Greg Weisman,

This posting is about my thoughts on the May 12th episode of YJ:Invasion. If you see questions, you'll know when you see it.

I watched "Alienated," and I still can't believe Aqualad became a traitor. According to his claims, he blames The Team for the death of Tula. He also blames Aquaman for not telling him about his relationship to Black Manta. I'm surprised that Aquaman knew all along in this Earth-16 continuity. When Aqualad tries to escape, Nightwing and Superboy try to take matters into their own hands and attempt to stop him on their own, but the distraction of the bomb complicated things. It's worth nothing, as I'm sure you've seen on the episode, that it seemed like Aqualad personally wanted to fight one-on-one with Nightwing (since he said "Just you and me, old friend"). He obviously didn't get a chance this week, but I have a feeling that their personal showdown is inevitable.

Otherwise, this has been a great episode this week. We got to see Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl team up. We got to see the entire Bat Family (sans Jason Todd) in action. We also see Superman's relationship with Superboy greatly improved as they treated each other more like brothers rather than as father and son. Was it my imagination, or was Superboy called Kon-El?

The sad part, beside Aqualad being a traitor, was the fact that the accused members of Justice League (along with few that are joining them voluntarily) had to leave for trial since they now found out what they did. I hope everything goes well in that trial on whichever episode shows up in the future.

Oh, and another thing, since Black Manta is replacing Ocean-Master (who's oddly been disgraced for unknown reasons), is he filling in his former position in The Light?

Thanks for taking the time to read this posting.

Greg responds...

1. It was not your imagination.

2. I'm not sure what you're asking - unless you answered your own question.

Absolutely loved this episode! I was AWSOME!!! I especially loved the interaction between Clark and Conner; when he called him "little brother" I couldn't have been more happy!! I was all AAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW! ^_~

Also Blue Beetle doesn't fail to bring a chuckle to me with everyone constantly thinking that he's talking to himself...

Question regarding him though; I know this series is different considering that this is another Earth, but in the comics the scarab was against causing physical harm to living things, even almost getting Jamie killed sometimes. Yet in "Alienated" it sounds like the scarab wanted to vaporise the Krolotaian.

1. So is this scarab different in this way?

Also I noticed a young African-American boy with dreadlocks in the Hall of Justice looking at what I guess were a pair of Cheshire's katanas?

One of the many things that I love about this series is that it's like a "where's Waldo" of DC comic book characters.

As of December 31st, Team Year FIVE:

I have some questions regarding the episode, Earthlings.

1. I noticed there were no subtitles when the Rannian language was spoken. I am curious, what were Adam, Alanna, Sardath and the Rannian police saying in the Rannian language throughout the episode?

2a. Does Sardath know that Alanna has a crush on Adam?

2b. If so, how does he feel about it? Does he accept his daughter's liking for Adam or is he against it or entirely neutral about it?

3. Does Adam have a crush on Alanna as well?

4. Do Rannians age the same rate as humans?

Yes, five years ago - at age 15, she was quite happy on the Team. Five years later, at age 20, she was offered a spot in the League and took it. These two things are not incompatible.

If Superman was at age 33 when Young Justice started (at 2010), and he officially started his superhero career at age 21, that mean he was born in 1977 on Krypton, correct? Also, assuming this occurred before his superhero career officially started, when did Clark Kent finally found out (or at least, accepted) the truth about his origins?

HI GREG!

I heard down the grapevine you're a fan of Joss Whedon.

1.) Have you gotten to see the Avengers film yet?

2.a) If so, did you draw any inspiration from it, seeing as it's in the same "super-hero ensemble" genre you write (so well) for?

2.b) What modern works (be they film, television, literature, art, or not at all) do you draw inspiration from? Or just like?

3.) Over your career, you're written generally high-concept stories. Now more than ever, it seems like high-concept stuff has entered the mainstream (aliens, super-heroes and giant transforming robots running around everywhere). Since everyone's playing in the same sandbox artistically, does that make it more difficult to come up with original ideas? Without subverting or straight-up parodying the genre you're writing in?

4.) How do u rite so gudd? What would you recommend to new, ambitious writers, to help us learn to write with confidence and voice and stuff?

5.) Your decision to skip ahead 5 years (in YJ) shocked me, upset me and piqued my interest. I've never seen a show jump so much time, so I'm very excited to see how you all bridge the two season together. How did you let the studio powers-that-be let you take such a big narrative risk? Was it a big struggle?

Thanks for (presumably) taking the time to read and answer my questions. I love that Ask Greg makes it so easy to reach out to an artist I admire, whose work I respect. I'm the biggest fan ever of everything you've ever done, yadda yadda more accolades, etc. But really, you are an inspiration.

Greg responds...

1. Yes.

2a. We were WAY done by the time I'd seen the movie.

2b. Check out the "INFLUENCES" archive here at ASK GREG.

3. I'm not sure you're defining "High Concept" correctly. I think you mean "genre" has entered the mainstream. In any case, I just don't think in those terms. I'm just trying to tell good stories.

4. READ the classics. WRITE a lot. Proofread scrupulously. Get yourself VERY educated. Read newspapers. Etc. Or check the ASK GREG archives for a more complete answer.

5. No struggle. Everyone loved the idea.

Hi There Greg!!
Here is my question.
I'm guessing that the reason why you guys put WW's age into the 80s was to emphasize
the fact that she's immortal, which was a great move.
I know that Superman is in his 30s on your show, but i've read and seen in multiple portrayals of Superman (like Kingdom Come, DCAU), that while he's not immortal, he has a much, much longer lifespan than normal humans.
Was the reason why you chose not to give him a advanced age, was to emphasize the fact
that inside, he's more human than alien?

Greg responds...

I'm not confirming or denying that Superman has a longer lifespan. Nor am I confirming or denying that Wonder Woman is immortal.

In any case, your premise regarding Wonder Woman is incorrect. She's older because she first came to "Man's World" during World War II.

4. Can Beast Boy stay in a sort of in between stage when turning into animals?

Thanks for all the work you and your colleagues put into such a great series!

I was curious if this universe has a system for dealing with the property damage that comes with the existence super powered heroes and villains, it's always something I end up thinking about watching animated series.

In terms of..
a. Is the league expected to help the general public repair neighborhoods and cities?
b. Is money privately and publically budgeted for expected damages in high risk cities? (The typical home areas of all the different heroes.)
c. Has it ever become an image/PR problem for the league? Or does the status quo put lives before property and accept it as an inconvenience/blame the bad guys?

Very excited to see where Invasion is going. :) Unexpected but interesting twist.

Greg responds...

a. "Expected"? That depends on who we're talking about. But I think they do help when they can.

b. Perhaps.

c. Mostly the latter, but things ebb and flow.

I have the feeling there are entire industries on Earth-16 (insurance, certainly) dedicated to this stuff. In fact, I'll make up one such on the spot: LexSure, a division of LexCorp.

Based on Beast Boy's flashback in "Earthlings," I suspect that Queen Bee killed Marie Logan (and presumably tried to kill Garfield as well) as revenge for Miss Martian's deceptive actions in "Usual Suspects." Why wasn't Marie Logan and her son put into protective custody in order to avoid further danger from Queen Bee?

Greg responds...

I'm not going to confirm or deny your hypotheses.

But as for the lack of 'protective custody', it was a combination of M'gann's naivete and Marie's stubborn desire to stay put and run her sanctuary.

Hello Greg Weisman, thank you for this interesting opportunity. I'm a big fan of Young Justice and it's great to see another great DC show around. I'm sorry to say this is the first show by you that I've watched (I should fix that). Snappy writing, fun undercurrent of mystery, and from what I understand is a staple of your shows, not assuming your fans are incapable of following an ongoing plot line.

I love the fight scenes in the show. Very fluid animation; and I enjoy in particular when the "normals" get to cut loose and drop some martial arts on each other. I also find it fun when Superboy gets to utterly wail on people.

Anyways, I have a question that has been plaguing me in recent years. I'm not sure if the answer varies from show to show but here it is. How much say do the writers get in the crafting of the action scenes? Do you guys lay down some guidelines for what must happen in a fight or do you ultimately leave it up to the animators and/or artists?

Well, there's my question that quickly devolved into a multi-question, I'm sorry. But, please, keep the awesome coming man! I hope this show keeps on keepin' on! Six seasons and a movie!

Greg responds...

Every series is different. On YJ - and most of the shows I've produced - I make sure that the script spells out the action in real detail - in part to attempt to assure that we're not winding up with an episode that's too long or too short. Having said that, I then am happy to have our board artists, directors and my fellow producer (on YJ that's Brandon Vietti) go to town and PLUS the action and visuals. But I do get approvals on all this to make sure we're staying on point with our story and not doing stuff that's out of character or off-tone for our series. Then you have the timers and, of course, the animators contributing too.

3. Since Coldstone flies with rocket power, as do Coldfire and Coldsteel, would they ever run out of fuel? What powers them?

4. Did Iago really love Desdemona, or does he just want her because she's taken?

1. Wow, you're really testing my memory. I think it was based on "real". Desdemona, as I recall, was upset because Othello believed Iago when he accused Desdemona of having an affair with Goliath.

First let me say i really enjoyed the first season of young justice and couldn't wait to see the second season of young Justice!!But i wouldn't be honest if i didn't say that i was surprised and shocked at the changes that were made, the time jump of five years, the focus changing from the seven members from the first season and the big shock, Miss Martian and Superboy breaking up!!

Even those i could see that coming not because they weren't a good couple. A lot of things have turned out to be the same as the first young justice comic book series, you changed the way they get there, plus it seems everybody wants superboy to be with wondergirl like in the comics. As for me, i like Miss Martian and Superboy as a couple and hope they get back together in the future but that just me!! That being said, i did enjoy the first two episodes from season two! My Questions,

1.How tall is Miss Martian in her true form?
2.Did Miss Martian have anything do with Superman finally accepting Superboy?? She seemed to know he was coming!!I guess what i'm asking is did she talking to him.

Greg responds...

1. Pretty tall.

2. She was facing Superman and saw that he was heading toward Superboy. So she made herself scarce, so the two of them could talk. For more on the Superman/Superboy relationship - including what role M'gann might have played in it, check out our Young Justice companion comic (issues 20 (on sale now) through 25). This is a major subplot of the story.

In the comics, Bumblebee could not use her suit to shrink, nor did she have a relationship with the Atom, but in Young Justice she can shrink and is the Atom's sidekick/lab partner/student something (as of my asking this, only Earthlings has aired). These two traits wouldn't happened to be derived from another bee-themed superheroine owned by a certain other comic company, would they?

Greg responds...

Our show was NOT the first time Bumblebee shrunk. We got it from existing sources. So you'd have to ask the creators of those sources if Wasp was an influence on them. We are - as far as I know - the first to make Ray Palmer her mentor, but that mostly fits in with the dynamic of our series, and has nothing to do with Marvel's Wasp, who was in a romantic relationship with Hank Pym, not a mentor/protegee relationship.

I was quite suprised with the implication that Delilah might take Malibu on as her mate, as his mental development would in line with a child right?

Could there be somewhat sinister Demona-eque reason for Delilah remaining with Malibu and the other clones? You've mentioned, or at the very least it's on the wiki that she's the natural leader of the clones given her education. Does Delilah has Demona's urge for power and leadership? It would seem that Malibu would be a far more passive mate than Thailog and no threat to her attaining leadership of their clan. Or am I perhaps judging her too harshly?

Greg responds...

No. Malibu lacks education. There's nothing wrong with his mind. Which renders the rest of your question moot.

I was looking up the Marvel Gargoyles comic. If you wanted to use to use any of those characters are they considered marvel characters or Gargoyle characters? It's probably a non issue but I am curious. Venus seems like such an obvious character to deserve a parody, although Delilah probably already fills that role.

Greg responds...

I'm not really in the business of parodying Gargoyles' characters. (That's really more of an Edmund Tsabard thing, and even that guy went out of business.)

I don't know what the legalities are, but I'm not to interested in importing non-canon characters into the mix.

Hey Greg,

I know a lot of people consider Gargoyles to be an anti-Disney show due to its dark tone, but I think it actually has a lot of similarities. Both Gargoyles and other Disney films adapt mythology and famous stories in their own ways, while featuring strong emotions and conflicts(okay, those might be a bit general).

My question is, did Disney storytelling have an influence on the making of Gargoyles, and the eventual integration of different mythologies?

Greg responds...

I'm sure it did, since I grew up on Disney movies. But we weren't consciously trying to either DO DISNEY or NOT DO DISNEY. We were just doing GARGOYLES.

Hey Greg,

You mentioned that you received a list of pretty much every teen hero in the DC Universe, from which you and the rest of the creative staff picked the show's line-up. Did you ever, upon learning about a character, think "Wow, what a stinker! This guy is crud. Yeah, we're not using him/her." I'm NOT asking you to name specific characters obviously, but did you ever have that reaction at some point in the process?

Greg responds...

No, that's not what I 'mentioned'. I didn't 'receive' a list. I put the list together myself.

I'm making a big point of this, because I see this happen all the time. I write something, however innocuous. And then like a child's game of telephone it moves through the fandom - on one board or another - and soon enough people are posting (with TREMENDOUS CONFIDENCE, mind you) that they know X is going to happen because "GREG SAID SO." When in fact, I never did. (Heck, sometimes I said literally the opposite.) Trust me, I see this over and over and over again. Sometimes, it's amusing, sometimes annoying, sometimes infuriating.

So I think it behooves us all to STICK TO THE FACTS and to KEEP THE FACTS STRAIGHT.

Now, back to your actual question: there are obviously some characters that are more interesting to me than others. Sometimes because I'm more familiar with them. Sometimes because they suit our needs. Sometimes because they're just flat out cool. And there are always going to be others - in a universe as big as DC's - that don't grab me as much. But there's honestly not one character on our teen hero list that I'd rule out absolutely. As I've said before, if we can make Professor Ojo kinda cool, there's little I'd be afraid to take on with this crew of talented folks on YJ.

Wow! I was watching Young Justice: Invasion episode two and I must say, that was awesome!!!! But what caught me off guard, was when Adom Strange was talking about Alice and wonderland characters, such as the jaberwock and the bandersnatch. (sorry if I misspelled the names) I find it funny how he used that as a distraction. :) Why is it that many DC Universe characters are affiliated with Alice and Wonderland? (Characters such as Artemis and Adam Strange)

Greg responds...

Um... probably my fault. I have a fondness for the works of Lewis Carroll. Not on the level of my Shakespeare obsession, but I'm a fan.

On the other hand, Nicole Dubuc wrote this script, and I honestly can't remember if the Jabberwock stuff was her idea or mine.

Icon was identified as a type of alien called a Terminan. Beyond that, nothing else is known about him on Earth-16. I wish to ask more about him, but knowing how sensitive your updated guidelines are, I’ll just ask some simple stuff.

a. If Icon has a secret identity, what name is he called by?
b. Being that he is a Terminan, I suspect that Icon must have quite a longevity, but how old is he exactly?
c. Since he currently lives on Earth, what is Icon’s given age under the guise of his secret identity and according to Earth-16’s U.S. government records?
d. What was Icon's purpose for coming to Earth in the first place, assuming there WAS one?
e. In regards to Icon's voice actor, who is well-known in the Final Destination franchise, why was he specifically chosen for this role?

Greg responds...

Icon was not identified as a "Terminan" on our television series. So you don't even know that much about him on Earth-16.

a. Augustus Freeman.

b. Who said he's a "Terminan"?

c. I don't know.

d. Assumes facts not in evidence.

e. I've always admired Tony Todd's voice. But the truth is, voice director Jamie Thomason and I were having lunch at Taste Chicago in Burbank, and we saw him there. That reminded me how I'd always wanted to cast him in something. Then when Icon came up, he seemed perfect. Timing is everything.

K. As much as I loathe Season 2...
I have to say/ask:

1. Some of you love Season 2. Awesome. Good for you. Some of us hate it. Loving the new season doesn't give you the right to tell everyone else to "get over" anything, keep their opinions "to themselves" or to not post their feelings here. It's not your board. It's Greg's. Some negative reactions have been "approved". That tell you anything? It should. Yours is not the only acceptable opinion in the world or in YJ fandom (former or otherwise).

2. Liking/missing the relationship aspect of season 1 (and asking what happened?) does not make someone a "shipper". Stereotypes are just that. I moved out of my parents' house when I was 16. Got tattooed. Got into fights. Lived on the streets. Pulled myself up by my bootstraps, so to speak. I now have a good life. Have always had an active "intimate" life and have decent social skills. But? I LIKE COMIC BOOK MYTHOLOGY. See? Not a "geek" or "fanboy", etc. So much for being able to pigeonhole people based on what they like. Relationships are part of the story. Like costumes, to a degree. If Robin started wearing clown shoes, a ball-gag and a pirate hat, somebody might express their displeasure. Does that make them a "'stumer"? No. This isn't the "Big Bang Theory", so let's not entertain these insipid stereotypes.

3. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW HOW OLD CHARACTERS ARE!?!? Every other question is "how old is Alfred?" "how old is Sphere?" "what is Batgirl's hat size?" Does this really matter... to anyone, on any level? Does not knowing Blue Beetle's exact age, Teekl's high school locker combination or Hawkgirl's bra size really keep you awake at night? If you enjoy season 2, just watch it, enjoy the ride and stop sweating the small stuff! Some of us are backside hurt over the time skip and quit watching after season 1! You're lucky if you're not one of us! Just be happy and enjoy the show.

Greg responds...

1. So you came onto MY board to tell others off? Fun times.

2. I really think you're posting this stuff in the wrong place.

3. So, you want the right to ask and/or comment on whatever YOU want to ask and/or comment about, but it bothers you that other people are doing the same? People have different interests. How does that take skin off your back?

Look, I'm sorry if you feel 'backside hurt', but you posted this after - at most - the second episode of the season. We didn't ditch out on relationships, even vaguely. You just lacked, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh, yeah. ANYTHING RESEMBLING PATIENCE. And I think your somewhat defensive, not to mention hypocritical post here demonstrates that.

Having said all that, I'm basically shrugging here. There's no law that says you have to like ANYTHING, let alone Young Justice: Invasion. But the exact same creative team worked on both seasons, and care deeply about all the characters. If you liked Season One enough to care this much about it, you might have given us a little trust and taken the chance that maybe, just maybe, we had a plan, and the characters you loved and the relationships that help define them, would not be left out of the mix. Just a thought.

Awesome episode, keep it up!
PS-Got the YJ free comic book day issue. Nice!

1. I'm writing the plot for a comic, and I've hit writer's block. Do you have any suggestions as to how to overcome it?
2. I mostly write on inspiration, as that's when I can create the best stories. When not inspired how do you continue to work on a writing project?
3. What type of people do you bounce ideas off of or have read over your stuff?

Greg responds...

1. Write anything. Market lists. Daily Journals. Whatever. Just get back in the habit of writing. Focus off the problem that blocked you for a bit though. The answer may come to you in the shower or something.

2. The characters tend to tell me what happens next.

3. My partners on any given project. (I rarely work in a vacuum.) Kevin Hopps, whom I've worked with for years and years now, is probably the best sounding board I've ever had.

Hiya,Greg, man I am even more psyched for this show now. The writing has really stepped it up. One thing bugs me though. Miss Martian. Under that sweet, cutesy exterior I really feel we have someone who is and should not be taking liberties and doing what she does. It's creepy and insidious what she does and I am thinking, Conner's instincts are leading him the right direction because she feels dangerous to me. This ability to invade minds...it bugs me.

I don't think as well, her being a shape shifter justifies her being with Conner as said by Alana. Dude needs to move on...no, cross that. He needs to allow himself to grow and experience the world. He is 5 year old kid. Kudos on Conner's emotional/psychological growth too. He seems less angry too and more in control.

And as for Lagoon Boy, why is he already slated as the "jerk"? He looks like a fish and acts no different to any boisterous teenager. This was the same thing said about Wally. I like underdogs. I feel sorry for him in a way. Anyway, I can't wait to see what the JL got up to in the 16 hours they were off world!!! Great, suspenseful, intelligent writing!!! And gorgeous crisp animation!

I have a question about Gargoyle genetics and cloning. Apologies if this makes your head hurt, it's made mine hurt.
In Marvel comics, when they cloned X-23 they used just Wolverine's X chromosomes as the Y sample was damaged and a male clone wasn't viable.

I was looking up reptiles, as Gargoyles as I understand it are closer to reptiles than mammals. In reptile genetics it's the females(ZW) that have two different chromosomes not males(ZZ). So if Sevarius had a sample of say Angela, but only the Z was viable would he'd still be able to create a male clone of her, right? Females clones for Gargoyles would be the trickier of the two?

Greg responds...

Gargoyles are NOT closer to reptiles than mammals. They are GARGATES. So your entire question is pretty much moot.

Hey Greg,
i have absolutly fallen in love with Young Justice. Lex Luthor has always been my favorite DC Character and I love the way he is portrayed on your show. So I have a couple of Lex centric questions.
1) In the Young Justice universe is LexCorp one of the world's leading scientific organizations/companies? Similar to Wayne Enterprises and Star Labs
2) In Agendas Lex states "I'm the new chairman of the board for Project Cadmus, was that just to gain Superboy's trust or does the Light consider him the head of that particular project?
3) Again one more Lex type question, was Lex and the Light involved with the founding of Cadmus or did they just take over an existing organization?

1. We think of Star Labs, differently, but yes, it's similar - theoretically - to Wayne Enterprises.

2. He's definitely the head. It was the word "new" that was bologna.

3. They founded it.

I only really have 2 questions so far, both relating to Miss martian.
1.) so, I didn't really get the design change until ep 2. is the reason for her change of appearance because she looked like Beast boys mom, and she changed her appearance so he wouldn't feel like she was trying to replace her. btw, love their relationship.
2.) She acted really dark. was that darkness the reason superboy broke up with her, a result of the break up, or just a new attitude she developed after 5 years as a superhero and seeing what most villans will do.
Really liking her character. I never disliked meg, but she was probably my least favorite in season 1, she didn't grow on me till failsafe. Keep up the good work greg, and thanks for giving us this series....MY LIFE NOW HAS MEANING.

Beast Boy Fan writes...

I just saw episode 2 of season two that explained a little about Beast Boy, Superboy, and Miss Martian; and I have to say I did like this episode more than episode 1. The one thing I am curious about is Beast Boys appearance. I really liked the way Beast Boy was portrayed in the show Teen Titans, an easy going young teen who is a bit of a jokester but is a sensitive person to his friends, and from what I have seen so far you are continuing that very well. I will however say that when I first saw his appearance, prior to episode 1 airing, it was a little off putting, since he mostly resembled a humanoid chimp; but after I saw him animated the appearance didn't bother me as much. However, when I saw episode 2 and I saw the scene when he changes back into his "human form", albeit with green hair and skin; it made me wonder it maybe his Beast Boy "form" was really a shape shifted form that he just stays in similar to M'gann's green martian form. It could be a way of of him escaping the fact that in his normal human form he couldn't do anything but in his humanoid chimp form he is free to be himself again; similar to how M'gann doesn't roam around as a white martian. I was just wondering if this is true. My reason may be my own I just wanted to know if he decides to stay in a permanent shape-shifted form similar to how Miss Martian stays in hers.

Also on a side note, I hear rumors about upcoming heroes that will be added to the show, besides the ones that are already confirmed, and I believe Raven is one of them, though I may be wrong. I hope that she can fit in well with this universe and still has a relationship, somewhat, with Beast Boy. No response it needed for this, I would just love to see the whole Raven Beat Boy relationship again.

Greg responds...

For the record, we're NOT continuing anything from the Teen Titans television series. Since we're all operating off the same source material, there's bound to be elements in common in our portrayals. But that's it. To be clear, I'm not claiming any superiority. Just clarifying that YJ is it's own... Beast.

Beast Boy's monkey-boy form is a choice - but I'm not going to go into how CONSCIOUS a choice it is. I'll leave that to the viewers' interpretation.

Like that, you could answer the questions in a more organized manner. Plus, you could answer the types of questions you want to answer whenever you want (i.e. You're sick of YJ questions, so you'll start answering Spiderman ones)

Overall, I think you should implement this or a similar system so the archives and unanswered questions can be easier to navigate for you, for the mods and for the fans.

The archives are ALREADY broken up exactly that wayr. What other 'organized manner' is required? First come/first serve seems fair to me. And I don't have any particular preference as to which show I'm answering about.

Wow, I WISH it had been. But, sadly, no. Just a coincidence.

These questions have now officially gotten complicated with the new season. So, what follows are their ages at the END of Team Year Five, i.e. December 31st the day before Season Two starts - ASSUMING they're still alive AT ALL. Unless you've seen them, no guarantees:

1. Black Lightning was 28.

2. Randy Eiling is 50 if still alive.

3. Peggy Eiling is 46 if still alive.

4. Angela Randall Adams Eiling.

5. Tseng Dangun was 59.

About the running gags, I had to ask, how did you come up with them, like the one of the bus.

And thanks for including nightwing, hopefully my classmates now will like him as much as I do.
Greetings from Costa Rica

Greg responds...

The bus just sort of happened. We did an endangered schoolbus on a bridge. Then I think someone did another endangered bus on a bridge. We could have changed it, but instead we decided to run with it and keep it the same Metropolis District School Bus with the same driver and kids - even though we were now in a different city.

When you were developing season 2 episode 1 and decided to leave Roy, Kaldur, Artemis, and Wally out, did you expect the reaction and the amount of questions (that I'm assuming will all be answered as the season goes on)that you're getting?

Greg responds...

Pretty much. We certainly WANTED the audience to be extremely curious to know where they all were and what was going on with them five years later.

Mr. Greg Weisman,

On this posting, there will be no questions. However, it seems only fair that I’d tell you something that I feel you may want to know. You may recall from at least two postings that I telling you about the post-Flashpoint DC multiverse. My suspicions were correct; DC Comics appeared to have cleaned the entire DC multiverse and are starting fresh. Here’s what I do know thus far and wish to share with you:

THE NEW DC MULTIVERSE THUS FAR (Post-Flashpoint):
a. First, we have our mainstream DC universe (aka. DCnU), but we still don’t know if its designation still remains as New Earth/Earth-0.

b. We have Earth-23, which was introduced in Action Comics #9. The Superman of this Earth seems to be modeled after our current President. His Kryptonian name is Kalel (and that’s how it’s spelled within the comic), while his human name is Calvin Ellis. I’d like to tell you other things I found out about this Earth, but I not that good at explaining it in great detail. Also, other parallel Earths were shown in that comic, but unfortunately there were no designations shown.

c. The last one is the re-imagined Earth-2, which is introduced in the new title, “Earth 2.” Just like the first Justice League story arc when the relaunch started, the first issue took place five years in the past. Apokolips is the threat once again, but here, Steppenwolf, and not Darkseid, is leading the invasion. Earth-2’s Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman die stopping the invasion, while the Supergirl and Robin of Earth-2 (who become Power Girl and Huntress as will be shown in “Worlds’ Finest”) follow an unknown person through a Boom Tube and end up stranded in the mainstream universe (at which in this point in time the events of the first arc of the relaunched “Action Comics” was taking place). Also, we get see the new younger versions of Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, and Al Pratt before they became the heroes they are supposed to be.

This now leaves the place of at least two pre-Flashpoint parallel Earths within this new DC Multiverse in question (or at least, in my mind, it does):

a. Earth-16 is the first one. While this world was introduced with existing information post-Infinite Crisis, this world was never touched upon again until you “rebooted” it for the setting for “Young Justice.” I might say that was the best decision you’ve ever made. You may recall from an earlier posting that I asked if you or your co-workers have ever confirmed with the higher-ups at DC Comics on whether or not your interpretation of Earth-16 still exist within the new DC multiverse. I’ll probably find out your response to that particular posting when it comes.

b. Earth-1 is the second one. This parallel Earth is the setting for DC: Earth One graphic novels. It’s hard to describe, but what I can say is that it’s sort of like the equivalent of Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Marvel universe (by way of being introduced to new readers, among other things). I think J. Michael Straczynski was the guy who started this parallel DC universe.

Hope you didn’t mine me telling you all this. I just felt that you needed to know what’s been going on in the new DC multiverse.

Thanks for taking the time to read this posting!

Greg responds...

Thanks. I haven't always had time to keep current. None of this effects episodes of YJ, which was all locked long ago.

Hi Greg

As someone who is interested in writing episodic stories, I was wondering if you could share your approach on how you write a season for a series like YJ. I remember seeing an image on Brandon Vietti's blog where he had post-it's on a board mapping out all of season 1.

1. Do you start with the season's overall story first, eg. "The Light wants to take control of the Justice League and Red Arrow is the mole who will help them" and then do you just come up with plot points/events that move the story forward and scatter them across episodes?

2. Do you come up character development separately or in tandum with the story? I ask because in my own writing I have growth of some characters mapped out but have struggled to come up with plots to tie that growth in with the overall story arc.

3. If you're able to recall, would you be able to share some of the content on the post-it's from a particular YJ episode?

4. And what are your thoughts on "filler story episodes". My interpretation was "Secrets" and "Performance" were filler, in that they didn't drive the overall season story forward, but did have character development. Do you think it's important in writing for a series to give the audience a break from the story arc at regular intervals?

Thanks for your time Greg on sharing your writing process.

Greg responds...

1. Yes, more or less. (For example, I'm not sure Red Arrow was the FIRST thing we came up with, as your example implies, but it was pretty early on.)

2. In tandom. Though we have a pretty clear idea of who all the leads are when we start.

3. Okay, first, not post-its. INDEX CARDS. Second, that board came down to make room for the Season Two board some time ago. And when I moved offices, even the Season Two board came down. That stuff's all boxed at the moment. But I do have issues #20-25 up on the board now. And since issue #20 has seen print, I'm willing to spoil THAT one here. Now the comic is slightly different. Particularly within this truly jammed-packed six-parter, my index cards literally broke things down page-by-page, and everything is color-coded to make it easier for me to refer to where a particular sub-plot left off:

I'll transcribe it all here, exactly how it's written on the index cards:

4. There's no such thing as filler episodes on any series I've ever done. There ARE change of pace stories, but even they wind up playing into the larger tapestry. For example, one could easily view "Targets" as a change of pace, focusing as it does on Red Arrow, Sportsmaster and Cheshire with just a little Aqualad thrown in at the end, but obviously, it wound up being crucial to the season as a whole. Neither "Secrets" nor "Performance" were filler in our minds. Both advanced the overall story, the arcs of multiple characters, the dynamics between those characters AND held clues to what was still to come. They clearly drove the season forward. Having said all that, I do think it helps to have 'breathers' in there, where some plotlines and/or characters are rested, to allow time for growth, to build suspence, to let off-screen events take place, etc., etc.

Hey Greg, I remember from one of your answers about Artemis that you’d discuss the question on why you made the creative choices with Artemis AFTER season 1 was over. And since I can’t find any question similar to this I’ll get this ball rolling on my 2nd favorite character on the show (Wally’s the first):
1.)What inspired you and your team to take Artemis Crock who was pretty much a villain in the comics and revamp her to being a hero and pretty much filling Arrowette’s place on The Team?
2.)How did you come up with the idea of making Chesire her sister, in this canon since she wasn’t in the comics?
3.)At what age did Sportsmaster start training her daughters?
4.)You can just respond yes or no to this question, but was there a specific incident that caused Artemis to NOT want to follow in her families villainous footsteps and walk a more heroic path?

Greg responds...

1. We liked her parentage and the opportunities that presented in terms of her having secrets to keep and lies to tell.

2. Seemed to fit. Cheshire - in the comics - has always been trying to figure out who her father was. Why not Sportsmaster? And again, it created a very interesting relationship and dynamic between her and Artemis. Plus we knew we wanted to add ethnic diversity to the Team, so by folding the Eurasian Cheshire into the family, it made it natural to make Artemis half-Vietnamese, half-Caucasian, as well.

3. Probably from birth.

4. Yes and no.

When you organize your list of characters for use on Earth-16, do you categorize them as:

a.) Heroes, Villains, and Antiheroes?

0r

b.) Good, Evil, Neutral Good, and Neutral Evil?

Greg responds...

I really only had two lists that I actually TYPED UP, one for teen heroes and one for possible Light members or allies. But keep in mind, I also have literally decades of DC Comics trivia in my head, plus two complete iterations of WHO'S WHO on my shelves, a DC encyclopedia and e-mail access to the incomparable John Wells, DC expert extraordinaire! Plus, you know, my contacts at DC: Ivan Cohen (formerly), Geoff Johns, Mike Carlin and Sean Ryan - all of whom were VERY helpful. Plus most of the staff -and half the cast - are bigtime geeks also.

Of course, AFTER we went into production, I started new lists of characters that we were actually using. But those are broken down by episode, not by hero and villain.

im just curious, in hindsight, are you happy with the timing of the s1 finale/s2 premiere, coming out in the same month as issue 14-5? im just saying caus we didnt know ocean master and orm were the same but orm was said to be on their side in the finale, and now we learned some cool things about lagoon boy too before his role expanded

another lagoon boy question - when you had him played by yuri lowental in downtime, did you already know you werre going to use him in s2?

Greg responds...

1. I'm not UNhappy with how it turned out.

2. I believe so. That is, we knew we were going to use Lagoon Boy. We didn't make a final decision on Yuri until just before we began auditions for our Season Two cast. That's not meant as a reflection on Yuri AT ALL. We simply didn't discuss who would be playing what until then, at which point Jamie Thomason and Brandon Vietti and I sat down to figure out which characters we'd need to hold auditions for, and which we were already good with, which of course included Yuri.
