Were there ever any plans to release the music tracks for Spectacular Spider-Man? Certain songs, like the Sandman's theme, were really catchy! Would you know where someone could listen to them free of the show's sound effects and dialogue?

6:30pm (more or less) - ??? - And then right after the signing, we'll move out to the lobby of the Marriott for a Young Justice Fan Meet-Up. This is the part that does NOT require you to have paid for the convention. Just show up and hang out, as we chat with fans, take pictures with Cos-Players, sign and sell stuff (say, for example, RAIN OF THE GHOSTS) in a more informal setting. Chris Jones and I will stay for the duration, frankly until it begins to wane of its own accord. I'm sure some of the other guests will hang out for at least a little while (though that's not guaranteed).

Was the bgm played during the scene when Wally and Artemis kissed in front of the Eiffel Tower the same as their theme in "Salvage"? I'm not sure. If so, it was a nice touch.

I'm totally crazed, trying to get work done and prep for San Diego Comic-Con, but I'd be remiss if I didn't remind everyone that both the DVD with the final episodes of Young Justice: Invasion and the soundtrack album featuring music from both seasons of YJ are on sale now.

When you were writing the "Gargoyles" comics for Slave Labor Graphics, did you ever mentally associate any of the scenes you wrote with the different musical themes from the television series? (I thought of this question after I realized that I was mentally linking Brooklyn's words when he returns from his Timedancing, "Forever... forty years... forty seconds... however you keep time, the dance is finally done" to the music that played in "The Gathering Part One" when Goliath was talking about how Avalon had finally released them from its quest and now they were home.
Honestly, I'm not sure I did.

I don't think it's a dumb question at all, and there's been some discussion about it. I have nothing concrete to report at this time, but if/when I do, believe me I'll be pimping it here. (I assume we're talking about YJ, right?)
What the names of the songs of Rigoletto featured in SSM "Gangland"? The only ones I recognized were:

1. I'm afraid I don't have access to my old Sony SpecSpidey files here at my WARNER BROS. Young Justice office, and I just don't remember exactly which songs we used.

3. I think that one inspiration was clearly the Godfather movies.

1) Are Zatara and Zatanna celebrities, since the former doesn't seem to have a secret identity or disguise who he is in any way? Are they well known to the people of New York?
2) Why is it that Michael McCuiston, Kristopher Carter and Lolita Ritmanis always compose each episode's music together? When they worked on Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans etc, each one of them tackled a different episode, an approach that I felt worked extremely well. Would you ever consider letting them compose individual episodes on their own, 'splitting duties' as it were?
3) Is Zatanna attracted to Robin?
4) Not to be pedantic or anything, but shouldn't "Homefront" and "Coldhearted" be "Home Front" and "Cold Hearted"? Homefront and Coldhearted aren't actual words to my knowledge.
5) Do the other members of the Light find Klarion annoying?
6) Was Paula Crock ever married?
7) How did Harm's parents die? Did he kill them?
8) Since Garth and Tula were referred to as Tempest and Aquagirl on the Comic-Con playing cards, can that be taken as an indication that they will assume those aliases in the near future on the show?

10) Why hasn't Artemis's crush on Superboy been touched on in episodes other than "Infiltrator" and "Secrets"?

9. My mind doesn't work that way. They're all like my kids. Even the ones I didn't write. But I'll admit, I was pretty proud of the synergistic elements within "Misplaced".
10. It has. It's just subtle, I suppose. It's also been in the comics. Ultimately, there's only so much screen time, though, I guess to focus on it.
Hi! It's me again, and wow, we've had some great episodes since "Terrors." "Home Front" and "Alpha-Male" really served to underline one thing I think is really great about this show: the bad guys aren't go to show the heroes mercy, just because they're teenagers. If these people can stomach killing civilians, they will definitely use lethal force to get rid of a few meddling kids.
...and then there was "Revelation," which blew my already high expectations for this show right out of the water.
It's not just that I think this show is nine kinds of amazing; the thought that keeps crossing my mind is, "This is the definitive animated version of the DC universe." This coming from someone who loved Batman: the Animated Series, and watched Teen Titans, The Batman, and the vast majority of DCAU material. Maybe it's because I'm not as young anymore, and I need a more mature, more plausible, more "complete" world; but while that's certainly a weighty factor in why I like Earth-16, I really think the level of writing and design seen on this show just hasn't been surpassed by any animated DC material that I've seen yet.
Anyway, sorry about that rant of praise. I'm sure you get a lot of it. I do have a few questions:
1. I looked through the archives, and there have been a lot of questions about Robin's - or, more specifically, Dick Grayson's age and grade level. I get that he's thirteen, and a freshman; he's definitely smart enough to have skipped a grade somewhere down the line. My question is this: if he is a freshman, and therefore new to Gotham Academy, why does its gym have his math prizes before he starts going there?
2. Belle Reve seems to hold many criminals who do not actually have any super-powers. Why are they held there, and what do their collars actually do, besides shock them? (I'm thinking more particularly of Riddler - though I know there's a question about him pending - Abracadabra, Ojo, and, with the exclusion of Killer Frost and Icicle Jr., the ice villains).
3. How do the power inhibitor collars have any effect on Mammoth and Blockbuster? Not only is their strength in their muscles (and therefore not a "supernatural" effect that can be canceled unless the collars generate some kind of gravity field - and then they wouldn't be able to move), but the Brain's collars don't seem to do anything to his enhanced animals.
4. How old is Wotan, and *what* is he?
5. How old is Black Adam, and why are his ears pointed?
6. When Atomic Skull blasts the flash, why does he not sustain severe radiation burns?
7. I really, really liked the way you re-introduced the Helmet of Fate. The entrance on that amazing low drone singing. The ethereal, solemn sense of power that created really served to demonstrate that Fate isn't just some hero - he's the physical manifestation of a cosmic entity. Anyway, my question: did you get a singer to vocalize that, or was it done digitally somehow?
8. Speaking of - I'm curious about the music in animated TV shows. Do you record real musicians playing the tracks (orchestras, rock bands, etc.), or is it all done digitally? And if it is all digital nowadays, might you know when the switch was made?

1. ASKED AND ANSWERED. (It's a six year school. 7th-12th grades.)
2. Riddler's collar does nothing but potentially shock him and keep him in line. But any "super-villain" who could easily escape a standard prison can be housed at Belle Reve, whether they have innate super-powers or not.
3. Brain's collars weren't designed to inhibit, just to maintain discipline (which is another function), so that's an apples and oranges argument. As for Mammoth and Blockbuster, the collars inhibit their muscles. Not 100%, but clearly enough.

8. Well, every series is different. Most - but not all - of the YJ music is synth. But of course, "real musicians" did record the synth . But for example, on Spectacular Spider-Man, guitar was such an important element of our score, that although most of the music was synth, the guitar work was always the genuine article.
The Gargoyles had very moody and powerful orchestral score, fitting very well into dark athmossphere which show embodied. Batman: The Animated Series had similar alike score(aside sharing some of its, writers/co-workers working on both of the shows).
However, Batman Beyond, although following in same timeline as Batman, taking place in dark future, had much more techno-metal soundtrack. Some themes similar to those heard in previous serie,s were also sometimes used, although in different instruments. Although liking of this change had been little bit mixed among fandom, i personally enjoyed this change, giving refreshing and differencing mood from it predecessor.
Somehow, i always envisioned that Gargoyles 2198, if ever reached to level of becoming animated series, would use similar kind of musical change: after all, in this spinf-off technology had expaned even beyond what we had seen in original Gargoyles, and we,ve would be seeing, thanks to Space-Spawn, alot in and out in our solar system: somehow i personally hear music like Static-x or Matrix soundtrack when thinking what this new enviroment would look like.
Do you think score would remain similar to Gargoyles, or would its future spin-off take futuristic change in not just visual but also sound?
I do understand that you dont usually like hypotethical questions, and i also try to avoid them, but this simply has been rolling in my head alot...
Score-wise, I don't think we shared any personnel with Batman: The Animated Series. Carl Johnson was the Gargoyles composer. Shirley Walker did Batman with a number of composers, but I don't think Carl was one of them, though I might be wrong.
I'm sure we'd incorporate certain Gargoyles themes, while striking out in a new direction, but I'm not interested in defining that direction now in any way.

Why does Speedy gets his own theme tune?
Also I would like to say this, after watching YJ, I really prefer Speedy's seriousness over Robin's seriousness anytime. Plus Crispin Freeman is the best Speedy voice actor in my opinion. Keep up the good work.

1.When coming up with the theme song for spectacular spiderman, how many bands and how many versions of the song did you have to go through? Did you n Victor Cook have much input into selecting the ulimate song?

1. We listened to about seven or eight submissions. Four of those, including the Tender Box song you're all familiar with, we liked a lot and wanted to use on the DVDs, but couldn't afford to. And, yes, Vic & I picked the song, though of course we needed approval from a whole bunch of folks at Sony, Marvel and KidsWB. Fortunately, everyone agreed with our choice without reservation.
2. Yes. Scooby-Doo, plus he's guest directing episode 20 of Young Justice.

When Young Justice starts airing in January, will there be a theme song at the beginning of each episode (or a minute or so in, like in The Spectacular Spider-Man)?

Really liked the Young Justice pilot, very solid stuff. I especially like the line Robin had about how Batman would "have his head" for taking so long to get out of those shackles. Robin seemed pretty capable, and I'm sure he'll get closer to Batman's level as time goes on, but I do hope we'll get to see the master at work every once in a while.
I also really have to say that I loved the action sequences (and the writing, of course). They had a great flow to them and a great sense of pace. I was also a bit surprised at how hard hitting some of the fights were, by which I mean they seemed to be fairly violent, even compared to something as recent as SpecSpidey, though that's just my take on it.
So anyway, you say that your brother, Jon Weisman, is writing for Young Justice, which got me thinking about how that was also the case during your time on WITCH. Since someone was nice enough to upload the entire series onto YouTube it has been easy enough to go back to. One of my favorites of that show was "S for Self", mainly because of the songs "Demon in Me" and "Will to Love" that played during it, for which you and Jon wrote the lyrics.
So this is a bit out there, but do you suppose that original songs, like those produced for WITCH, are something that would ever have a place in Young Justice?
How about an entire episode in the form of a musical? Buffy style, you know you want to.
I do want to. But I'm not sure I'm smart enough to come up with an original reason for it to happen -- that WORKS with the tone of this show. Way back when, I wanted to do a musical episode of Gargoyles, but could never come up with a justification. Then Joss Whedon did "Once More With Feeling". And of course, the answer was obvious. I could have used Puck to force everyone to sing. Trouble is... I wasn't smart enough to figure that out first. Yes, that's right. Joss Whedon is smarter than I am. Now, taking that approach would REALLY look like I was ripping off his idea. I'm not 100% sure I'm above that. But I'm about 87% sure, so...
Even on Spidey, which was a show with a way less realistic and grounded tone than YJ is, I struggled to find an original reason to do a musical episode. And I couldn't figure one out. So the odds of me figuring one out on Young Justice seem slim, I'm afraid.
Don't know if you'll know this, but when Sony relinquished Spider-Man TV rights, did that include the theme song? In other words, assuming TSSM comes back (and I'm also assuming that it will have already been renewed by the time you get this), then will you be able to use the same theme song, or will you have to make a new one? 'Cause I LOVE that theme song!!!!!!! (Although I'm sure you could another one just as good....)

Anyway, I wanted to know what the guitar chords were for the Spectacular Spider-Man theme, because I searched for them online, I couldn't find them anywhere, and would love to learn the song. I really hope you guys can get the show renewed, it's the best animated show I've seen in a long, long time.

The opera is Rigoletto. The rest of the music is by our composers, Lolita Ritmanis, Kris Carter and Michael McQuistion.
Thanks for doing such an amazing job with The Spectacular Spiderman. Both seasons are really enjoyable. I've just got two questions:
1) Why is it that a lot of the background music in season 2 was stuff that had previously been used in season 1? Aside from character themes, nothing seemed to be repeated in season 1, but in season 2, lots of music from previous episodes kept popping up again and again. Was a smaller budget used for the music in the second season?
2) The animation in season 2 seemed to be weaker than season 1 as well. Some episodes looked beautiful, but others seemed a bit choppy and off-model at times, like "First Steps" and "Identity Crisis". Was there a smaller budget for the animation in season 2?
1. Themes were reused intentionally -- and by the second season we had a LOT more themes to reuse -- but to my knowledge, no actual music was reused, and I attended EVERY music spotting session, muisc preview session and sound mix.
2. No. We've had inconsistent animation here and there both seasons. Both our seasons contain some of our most gorgeous stuff and some of our weakest stuff.

I wouldn't personally want to do it for a living, but it's fun to do every once in a while. But I'm afraid I have no career advice to give in this area beyond confirming, that yes, some people do lyric-writing for a living.

Also, related to music, I know that youre not a fan of Gargoyles fanfiction (which makes perfect sense since its an ongoing story) but what do you think of fan-made music videos (or even fanart for that matter)? While listening to a country station today, one of my favorite songs came on. Its called 'Put A Girl In It' by Brooks and Dunn. Since I had Gargoyles on my brain at the time, I thought it would be a perfect song to describe the Trio before Angela arrived on scene. But do you also ignore AMV's like you ignore fanfiction?
I have somewhat eclectic and perhaps old-fashioned tastes. I find myself listening to standards at work online at the Lounge.

I can't believe I'm evening asking this, it's so stupid.... but I was just skimming thru the archives, and found (from WAY back in 2003 or so, which makes me feel all the more stupid bringing this up) that u wanted Demona in the music video for "White Flag"
This is so eerie, b/c I thought the EXACT SAME THING when I heard that song. It would have been a heck of a lot more creepy if I didn't do that with nearly EVERY song I hear these days (at least when I'm bored.)
But there's one song in particular where it seems like EVERY FREAKIN' LYRIC is talking about Demona (please don't laugh or anything)- Avril Lavigne's "Happy Ending." Yes, Avril's kinda a guilty pleasure for me. The point is, I was just wondering if you had ever heard that song. I've heard some Avril songs on the radio, but I can't remember the titles, so I'm not sure if I've ever heard "Happy Ending" or not. I don't recall ever hearing an Avril song and going, "Hey, that's totally Demona." Whereas, "White Flag" really made me feel that way.
I'd like to know (since the DVD just came out) if you plan on releasing a soundtrack of Carl Johnson's compelling music.

Went over to Best Buy to buy it. Turns out, my little brother, 10 years old, today, was the won to find it. They were in a box somewhere in the 'TV Shows on DVD' aisle.

I read the back cover for the first time. It said it all, surprisingly. "The victems of Human betrayal" Humans? Betraying Gargoyles? To the unwise ear, that sounds ridiculous, and that those who read it must surely see how could perfect humans do evil to 'monsters.'

I saw the commentary in the Pilot episodes. (Isn't cool that "Gargoyles" has more than one pilot episode?) I loved how you (as in Greg, Frank, and Keith) mentioned every little thin we loved about the show, and the quirks that cam ealong with it. "Bronx kicks A**, or tail, as the case is!"
I also never truly realized the TRUE signifigance of Goliath asking to join the others in stone sleep. I never knew that he meant to commit suicide, but now that makes it all the more meaningful. It also reminds me of the Demona's anguish when she sees Goliath that way in City of Stone Part I, where she cries and kisses Goliath, not even trying to find a way to wake him.
I also loved the dog joke. Once an actor, now on the streets . . . cliche', huh?
I am glad that Carl Johnson also got the recongition he deserves. I mean, hard not to, right? Everytime the comentary began, you gave praise to the man who came up with that "BUMMMMM!! BUMMMMM!! BA BU BU BUM BUMMM BA BA BUMMM!! Epic indeed.
But it was truly a rewarding thing to see the show on DVD at last.

Ah, I'm just kidding. I wouldn't do that to you. My question's about the theme song for the first 2 seasons. Carl Johnson's original cut of the theme had the drums followed by some subtle woodwind working of the theme, the buildup, then the hardcore horns doing the theme that we know and love. But over the opening credits, the woodwind piece is cut out, and the horn section plays twice. What happened there? Was the wood section deemed not "action-oriented" enough for the opening credits? I like it, personally, I feel it contrasts the horns well. It's also quite the shock, hearing the original cut for the first time, expecting the huge hit of the horns and instead being hit with this really cool wind solo.

No, I'm guessing it's the video release, which combined the first five episodes and was titled: "Gargoyles: The Movie: The Heroes Awaken".
This isn't really a question at all. I just found that Carl Johnson has made the 14-minute "Gargoyles Suite" available on his web site, and it spans all the music themes heard in the episodes. There is also an original African-inspired track entitled "Panther Queen", as well as the main title themes for the Disney and ABC series. (I think that these are the same as the CDs from one of the Gatherings, but I can't be sure.)

It's funny how you mention Xanatos finding out that Goliath is missing, then not hatching any kind of a plot as a result, because you honestly couldn't think of something. I strained my brain to try and figure out how X might possibly use such knowledge to his advantage, and came up dry, so when nothing happened, I kind of expected it. In fact, felt validated by it. In my head, knowing that Goliath was missing let him put two and two together in episodes like "Cloud Fathers."
X's new security system DID suck, but it's cool to know why it was installed (as a result of "Double Jeopardy"). Those cannons were out of control. I think the sequence would have worked, thanks to the atmosphere and X's cool lines, if the cannons just would have aimed AWAY from the castle. The redundancy didn't bother me. Sure, Mac's place has these spiffy blaster cannons too, but HE'S not Xanatos.
Where did those Cyberbiotics rifles come from? Why did Cyberbiotics abandon them? Okay, so they pulled out fast, but jeez, talk about corporate neglect, leaving an arsenal of deadly weaponry in a subway. So much for Renard's integrity. (I'm trying to bait you here.)
Oh, the climax with Maggie and the key card? One of my favorites. The build-up is perfect and Carl Johnson composes it well.
Carl is great, but much credit should go to Marc Perlman, our music editor. We couldn't afford to have Carl score every episode. So Marc had to edit Carl's music to fit any situation. Though they were rarely in the same room together, the two made an amazing team.
I read your faq about the soundtrack so this is probably a worthless question, but do you know if there is anywhere to find or purchase Sheet music for Gargoyles music? I know they make music books for Disney movies and such and was hoping that perhaps there would be one for Gargoyles. Well I love the show and hope to see new episodes sometime. Thanks, Jacob

I was watching Gargoyles on Toon Disney tonight, plus my taped episodes over the weekend. I couldn't help myself, I whipped out my axe and hammered away. Eventually though I found the Gargoyles Title Theme. So guitar players out there here it is:
opening intro-10 measures- first measure is in 2/2 time then it goes into 4/4 time for the remaining 9. I could be wrong but it doesn't really matter.

==listen to the song for the timing it is really easy. Plus keep in mind that the opening "ahhhhh" sound seems to be in 2/2 time but the main "dummm da da dumm" flute? is in standard 4/4 time. And the outro is sped up considerably it is apparantly in 3/4 time.
Have fun with it. It sounds okay on an acoustic, but electric has a way better richness to it. I like to go crazy with the whammy bar on the 14th fret on the high E when its held for four counts. Another way to ROCK-up the sound is set the gain up to 7 or 8 and pull your switch all the way back.

It has been well established and I would think we all are well aquainted with the notion that Gargoyles didn't use names. Not for themselves as humans did and that the eventual use of names was influence and need of conformity from/by humans.
However you have said that gargoyles kept their myth, history and traditions alive by oral revelation from one generation to the next.
How where they able to tell sagas of things great leaders had done if they had no name of which to tell? (Try to tell your children about Napolean and all the things he did and all the people in his life without using his name)
It would be all too generic and vague for any real value. Did gargoyles never realy have great leaders? Did they consider the clan as a whole more important than the decision making of the leader?
and further note-my post on the guitar tab--well the on the outro the difference in the type size from the field box to the post page made it look wrong. so here is the outro again.
History to the gargoyles is more about the clan, about movements, than about individuals. But descriptive terms can be used to identify individuals. (Cf. Homer's Illiad.) I'm forgetting the technical term just at this moment -- where's Aris when you really need him -- but if you've got a guy named Ajax of the Broad Shoulders, for example, then do you really need the "Ajax" part of the name.
The point of NOT naming, as Hudson would say is to NOT set limits on who or what an individual is. So he might be "Of the Broad Shoulders" one minute and also be "Of the Massive Temper" the next. Both would be true, but reflect an aspect of the individual, as opposed to making an attempt to wrap the entire individual up into one word: Ajax. Over time these epithets would become as familiar as a name for an historical figure -- particularly in the context of a tale told over and over again.
How did the composition for the Gargoyles theme come to be?
Was all music made just for certain situations, (Macbeths 'break-up' scene with Luoch(sp)), or was it lifted from somewhere else???
Was the music made for the characters/scene or did the character/scene just match the music?
1. We auditioned a few composers. Liked what Carl Johnson was doing. Hired him. And he composed the theme.
2. All the music that aired on the series was composed FOR the series, but once a piece was composed it was put in our Gargoyles' Music Library. Our budget didn't allow for us to score every episode with original music, so our amazing music editor, Marc Perlman, used the Gargoyles' Music Library to edit a score for every episode.
3. Uh... Well, again, Carl composed certain themes that were applied and often reapplied to certain characters. But Marc juggled all this stuff.
I have always wanted to find the music, aside from the title and close music from Gargoyles (For example, the Something Sad is happening music, or An Evil Robot Is Attacking Music).

I've always loved Carl Johnson's music in the series. Watching City of Stone Part IV recently, I realized that you can hear this great, low, vocal music as Macbeth and Gruoch abandon Castle Moray. I thought it was a good, dramatic piece to go along with the scene, but I can't remember hearing it in any other episode. Do you know if original music was composed/recorded for this episode in particular, being one of the landmark multi-parters?
Speaking of the music of the series, I probably should have asked this first. I'm not sure how score composition works in an animated series. I seriously doubt new music was recorded for every episode, but I really can't say. Was the music used in each episode from stock clips? Would Mr. Johnson produce a series of generic pieces at the beginning of each season, or for the multi-parters? Or am I wrong, and it was more frequently than that? I realize that you may not have had that large a part in the incorporation of a score into the series, but anything you know about the process would be appreciated.
I'm sorry, I can't remember specifically about that moment in City IV. Generally, on GARGOYLES, we fully scored a few episodes at the beginning of each season. And we partially scored selected episodes where we knew we'd need something unique. Then Marc Perlman, our amazing music editor, would use our music library to edit a score to everything else.
At SONY, they score EVERY episode, but they do it with synthesizers not orchestras, in order to afford it.
