Hello! First off, my sister loves "Young Justice" and is a really big fan. I have yet to see it, but I plan to over the summer. However, I've got a few questions on a much older series you freelanced two episodes for, namely "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command", if you wouldn't mind answering them. (Loved all the inside "Gargoyles" jokes in "Clone Rangers", by the way!) I know it's been almost a decade since then, but I figured I'd give it a go.

1. How were you selected to write the episodes, and how did the process go? (e.g., did you yourself come up with the ideas, or did they present you a premise you had to stick to?)
2. How did you come up with Romac's character? Was there a reason behind him being the only "intelligent" Grounder around? Someone who served as a source of inspiration? (And, this is more trivia than anything, but how old would you say Romac is?)
3. How about the relations between Tangean Royals and Tangean Grounders? The story has a "Romeo and Juliet" kind of feel to it, but did you ever expand on why the two races live apart when they're on the same planet?

Thank you very much in advance! :)

Greg responds...

Wow, this was a LONG time ago.

1. I think I came up with the springboard for "Starstruck" and that Schooley and McCorkle came up with the springboard for "Clone Rangers". But I'm not sure, and my story editor Kevin Hopps may have come up with both for all I know.

2. Romac was based on Romeo. He's about the same age as the princess, whatever her age was.

3. It was all definitely based on R&J, but I don't remember any of the specifics, I'm afraid.

When I said "Should they consider making another Buzz Lightyear movie?" in the last question, I wasn't referring to Toy Story 3. I actually meant "In your opinion, do you think Tad Stones, Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle should consider reuniting and make another DTV Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie?" Sorry if I didn't asked the last question clearly. BTW I still remembered The Adventure Begins movie.

Greg responds...

I'm fairly sure it's not up to Tad, Bob and Mark, but of course, it's not for me to speak for them.

Disney Questions

1. Do you know what Tad Stones, Bob Schooley & Mark McCorkle are currently working on?

2. Any "possible" chances you might be able to work with those guys again?

3. In your opinion, do you think they really should consider making another Buzz Lightyear movie?

Greg responds...

1. I think Bob & Mark are working on Penguins. I'm not sure what Tad's on these days. Which reminds me, I should call all three of 'em.

2. I HOPE so.

3. Uh, Toy Story 3, anyone?

And, something not "Gargoyles" not "Spidey" and not "Young Justice" related.

I recently saw your Buzz Lightyear episode, "Star Crossed" for the first time. And something about the ending struck me. I had to re-watch it a few times, because on the surface, it didn't sit right with me... and I don't mean that as a criticism.

Did Romac die? His ship blew up on Planet Z. Team Lightyear was already off the planet. All of Zurg's cannons were trained on him. And then we cut away to Buzz's ship, Mira's psychic connection with him telling her that he was "gone."

Brainpod 57 then 'jacks an escape pod on Team Lightyear's ship, leaving a pre-recorded message from Lomac (that was obviously made before they landed on Planet Z) saying that he would some day win Mira back. But we never saw Romac again.

I realize this is a freelance script you wrote a decade ago, and this was still a light-hearted kids' show. But, considering how much I know you love to write on multiple levels, kids would think he was still alive. But I saw an impossible romance ending in a tragic death there.

Or am I just way off base?

Greg responds...

My guess is your way off base. I haven't looked at my draft of the script, let alone the finished project in years. But I think what you're reading as a PRE-RECORDED message was perhaps not-so-prerecorded. But like I said, it's been years. I just don't remember with any surety.

1In that Buzz Lightyear episode that your wrote whatever happened to the robot clone XR?
2Why exactly was that episode so similar to "Reckoning"?

Greg responds...

1. X-Treme and the other Clone Rangers (Zzub, Feara and Blister) are, to the best of my knowledge, still at large.

2. Some of it is semi-coincidental. The producers and story editor of Buzz wanted certain things in the story that were similar to Reckoning. Given that, I emphasized a few bits as an in-joke for Garg fans. Hope you don't mind.

Hi again!

This question actually deals with the credits listing of the series (yeah, I know it seems I have too much time on my hands, but that's beside the point).
Two things about GARGOYLES' credits stood out. The first you already talked about--the writers recieving credit at the beginning of episodes during the first season. The second however I also found to be quite interesting--GARGOYLES actually gave a true cast list. Usually in these Disney shows, when the credits say, "With the Voice Talents of..." they just lump the actors' names together without telling who they played. GARGOYLES was the first Disney animated series I know of (BUZZ LIGHTYEAR did it later) that actually listed both the actors and the characters they played. This enabled me to (when I started taping the episodes and could hit pause) more fully discover just how diverse and talented this cast was. I could recognize names and see if a person played multiple roles, and I was quite pleased.

So...
1) Is there any story behind this, like there was for giving the writers' credit up front?
2) Whatever the case, I'm glad I could know who played who.

Thanks!

Greg responds...

I don't know if this would qualify as a story, but I liked how Batman the animated series listed who played who. It seemed to show more respect for the actors (and as I was a fan of Batman) more respect for the fans who might be VCRing the thing and want to know.

So we followed their lead. And I'm glad we did. I tried to talk SONY into doing that for Starship and/or Max Steel, but they weren't interested.

With the different series you have done, like Starship Troopers, Max Steel, and MIB, have you ever thought of bringing Gargoyles in?...sneaking it I mean. As you did with the JLA comic. It might have worked especially in MIB, alien race of gargoyles ;)

Greg responds...

I've snuck garg references into almost EVERYTHING I've done. It's kinda pathetic in a way. 3x3 Eyes. Buzz Lightyear. Team Atlantis, etc.

this is something of a five-part question...

1> outside of "star crossed" what were the other episodes of Buzz Lightyear that you wrote?

2>in the clone episode, was X-treme supposed to be a hidden jab at the max steel franchise or just a shot at the gratuitous use of the term in marketing anything these days?

3> do you know if there's going to be any new episodes?

4> is there something more to XR hitting on Mira or is it strictly comedy relief?
and finally

5> where's my robot?

Greg responds...

1. "Clone Rangers".

2. The latter, sort of. More of a reference than a jab. I hadn't started on Max when I did "Clone Rangers".

3. I don't know.

4. I suppose the latter, though I wasn't intimately involved in this series. I just freelanced two episodes. I'm not an authority.

5. I don't know. In your pants?

Hi Greg,

Some brief outlines of your "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" episodes have been showing up in the Comment Room. I was just wondering:

1) Did you enjoy writing them?

2) What are your opinions of the two "Toy Story" movies?

3) Some people have been guessing that certain parts of the clone episode were references to Thilog in "Gargoyles". Intentional or not?

Thanks as always.

Greg responds...

1. I did enjoy writing them. And I thought Star-Crossed turned out very well.

2. I loved them both.

3. Very intentional. Just a few little in-jokes for fans of GARGOYLES.

Zzub: "You took the heroes name and spelled it backwards! How stupid is that?!"
