Maybe it's because they were in a few episodes together, but for some reason I imagine a sibling relationship between Billy (Captain Marvel) and Zatanna - similar to the one between Beast Boy and Ms. Martian. What say you?

(I may be projecting a little here. Zatanna is so cool. Who wouldn't want her as a big sister?)

Greg responds...

I wouldn't go that far. They're not as close as Beast Boy and Miss Martian. But there's clearly a connection there.

In the tie-in comic "hot case", Kaldur keeps a photo of Tula in his mobile phone. How did he take this photo? Does his mobile phone work in Atlantis? Shouldn't the image be dark and/or blurred? And if the photo was taken on the surface, what were Kaldur and Tula doing together at that time?

Greg responds...

He sent the photo - taken with Atlantean tech - to his surface smartphone. Yeah. That's the ticket.

So these questions are related to Star Wars Rebels, which is great series by the way. Now I'm aware that you are no longer working on the show, so I'll try and keep things to Season 1
1. When you were working on the series, did you have to verse yourself a bit more into the whole Star Wars lore, than what you already knew?
2. When working on season 1, did you meet or work with anyone who had previously worked on the Clone wars series?
3. Why does Darth Sidious allow the Inquisitor to exist? From what I understand, the Rule of Two means that there can only be two Siths at a time, until the student destroys his master or vice versa, so why does Sidious allow Vader to have an appritence?
4. Are the Stormtroopers that the Lothal Rebels fight in show, the same Clone troopers from the Clone Wars? I'm not an expert and I'm not sure if this has been retconed , but from what I've heard, when the Empire was formed, Sidious stopped the production of clone troopers and all the remaining clones were reorganised into the Strom troopers. Any new troopers that came after that were just regular recruits, so is this still the same case in Star Wars Rebels?
5. Now this is probaley the greatest mystery in all of Star Wars. The fandom has debated and speculated this for years, decades even and even today it still baffles them to no, but I would be interested in hearing your answer to this great and terrible question.................Why do the Stormtroopers have such bad aim?
Sorry but I really have to ask, especially after watching Droids in Distress. During the fight in hanger, the trooper could not hit Zeb once, even though he was quite literally three fight in front of them. I mean their aim seemed incredibly awful as they were missing by a wide margin. So in regards to the context of Star Wars Rebels, why are they such bad shots?

Greg responds...

1. Yes. Although (a) some of it was just refreshing myself and (b) I also relied on Pablo Hidalgo and Leland Chee at Lucasfilm a LOT.

2. Almost everyone, starting with fellow executive producer Dave Filoni, who was supervising director of Clone Wars.

3. The premise of your question is incorrect. The Inquisitor isn't Vader's apprentice.

4. No, they're not clones. Did you see the episode where Ezra went undercover?

5. Um... helmets offer poor visibility?

Hey Greg,

Going through the archives, I find the point by point summaries you give of the production process behind your various shows very interesting. It isn't necessarily obvious how much work goes into animated shows so I appreciate that you provide these brief insights.

Have you made a lot of changes to your approach or has it remained largely the same over the years? To put it another way, was your day to day work on Gargoyles significantly different to that of the work you did on WITCH, Spectacular Spider-Man or Young Justice?

Are any changes more to do with your own personal preferences, or are they largely determined by shifts occurring in the industry in general, with improvements to technology and so on?

Greg responds...

Day to day, little has changed of substance. But my process of breaking both arcs and stories continues to be refined with every new series. And there are technological changes that influence things too. I used to review timing sheets. Now, I almost never do. In fact, on Star Wars Rebels, I never even saw storyboards - just animatics.

But every series is slightly different. A lot depends on who you're partnered with, and the processes at any given studio, etc.

And yet, at the end of the day, the process is still basically the same.

I estimate Macbeth is, or at least was, a fan of theater given that he knew Shakespeare well, liked the Macbeth play, and borrows his aliases from it.

1. What are some other plays he was particularly fond of? Of any genre or time period. The idea of Macbeth attending Broadway musicals makes me smile.

2. Did he ever try his hand at acting or play-writing? Especially in the more modern times, the stage seems like the last vestige for an immortal to physically revisit some of those olden days. Can't say if it would be nostalgic or not for him though.

Thanks Greg,

Hi Greg. Hope you're well. I'm working through my to-read pile, but I have both Rain of Ghost novels on my desk waiting. I'm glad you decided to put books out. Xanatos, Macbeth, & Puck/Owen are my favorite characters from any medium, and I recently found out my dad loves the Star Wars Rebels series. He never watches cartoons. I haven't seen it yet, but he said he enjoys it because the characters were written really well. I wasn't surprised to hear that.

Had some more domestic, trivia-type question regarding Macbeth during his retirement from the world around 2198 & earlier (pre-Invasion). Couldn't find anything in the Archives.
1. How is Macbeth occupying his time by this point? Activities, interests, etc. I'm very interested in this sort of thing because I feel it adds dimensions to characters.

2. Secondly, was there something specific that caused him to want to withdraw from the world?
3. What was it, if you're willing to share?

I've read the synopsis of the radio play crossover you made for "Gargoyles", "The Spectacular Spider-Man", and "Young Justice" (it'd be neat if you could put up the script for it at "Ask Greg" as you did for "Religious Studies 101", and noted that, near the end, you had Batman asking Goliath to join the Justice League. Now, the obvious reason why you had Batman be the one approaching Goliath was for the joke about Xanatos trying to get both Batman and Iron Man to join his club for rich guys with fancy equipment. But I remember how, back when you were making "Gargoyles", you were concerned that people might see it as a rip-off of "Batman: TAS" (to the point where you even drew up a list of differences between the two series); did you choose Batman for that role as a sort of callback to that?

Greg responds...

Not consciously.

Mongul and Black Beetle were trading blows on the War world, and seemed to be evenly matched. But then we Green giving Black some assistance towards the end. Who would have won had it "stayed" strictly a 1 v 1

Does Klarion like being a pawn in Vandal's schemes. Is there a genuine mutual- respect between them.

Why does Nabo use the Helmet as medium to materialise in the physical plane? It just seems like Klarion's method "The familiar" is far more practical since he does not have to rely on a human vessel. Additionally, what are Lords of Chaos and Order.

Greg responds...

1. I don't know. Mongul is stronger, but strength is his only power. Black Beetle was using a number of powers. It might have gone either way.

2. Klarion doesn't see himself that way. Neither do I.

3. I'm not sure Klarion understands "respect". But, yeah, each in their own way.

4. There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. Klarion has to rely on his familiar, which often creates a vulnerability.

5. They are creatures of pure magic from a different plane that serve those two conceptions.

1. How powerful is Earth-16's Wonder Woman. Could she trade blows with Superman.

2. Ive always been intrigued by this; why is it that Kid Flash has to accelerate and decelerate when running, whereas Impulse and Flash can stop and start almost instantly

3. I know it has been established that Supernoy would never have full krptonian powers due only being half human-but in theory, would he get stronger(even if a little bit) if were closer to Earth's yellow sun.

4. Whats Superman's top flight speed in terms of "Mach"? Is it anywhere near as fast as Kid Flash.

5. What would it take to kill Superman on Earth-16, in terms of conventional weaponry. Could he survive a nuke as powerful as the Tzar Bomb?

Greg responds...

1. Sure. So could you. As long as you got to go first. Anyway, she's strong, but not AS strong as Superman.

2. I feel like I've answered this before, but once again...
*Jay Garrick became the first Flash due to a laboratory accident which gave him his speed.
*Barry Allen became the second Flash by intentionally recreating Jay's accident under laboratory conditions. It infused every molecule of his being, down to the genetic level and gave him much more advanced speed and molecular control over his powers than Jay had.
*Wally West (at age 14) attempted to recreate Barry's experiment in his family garage. He blew up the garage and nearly died. His powers are equivalent to Jay's.
*Bart Allen's powers are a result of a genetic inheritance from his father Don Allen, which came from Don's father Barry. His powers are equivalent to Barry's.

3. Eh. Maybe.

4. I dunno. Maybe he could build to that.

5. I don't know what the Tzar Bomb is, but he survived the Reach Bomb.

I was recently watching the Gargoyles episode "Eye of the Beholder" (which is one of my favorite episodes) and I was curious about one aspect of that episode's production. Was the Werefox's roars, snarls, growls etc. performed by Frank Welker? Some of the effects sound quite similar to other large beasts that Frank has performed. Thanks in advance.

Greg responds...

I don't recall. Was Bronx in that episode? If not, then probably not - as we're not allowed to use Frank's voice without paying him. And I don't think we'd have brought him in ONLY to roar for a guest werefox.

In any case, I'd think most were done with sound effects.

In regards to strength, how does Icon compare to the other league heavy hitters, such as Superman, Captain Marvel, Cpt Atom & Green Lantern?

Greg responds...

Green Lantern's not particularly strong. Not physically. As for Captain Marvel, it depends whether we're talking season one or season two.

I'm not too interested in ranking generally, so I won't be held to this, but I guess I'd rank it Superman, Icon, Captain Atom. The latter's strength is augmented by energy from the quantum field reinforced by his alien metal exo-shell. The energy is virtually unlimited, but there's only so much augmentation his muscles - even with his exo-shell - can manage.

But they're all very strong. And often, strength is situational. No one's interested in how much they can bench press in a gym under controlled conditions. (Or at any rate, I'M not interested in that.) So in one situation, I could see Superman being stronger; in another, Icon, etc.

The very first time I asked a question here, one of mine was about the change from Nathaniel Adam to Adams. You explained in always felt more natural to you, even in the 80s.

Did you know that, during the Silver Age, Captain Allen Adam was frequently, erroneously, identified as Allen Adams? In early appearances in Space Adventures, he would often be called Adams instead. See this one:

http://i.imgur.com/pT8dKKi.jpg

Like I said, no question, but vindication, perhaps?

Greg responds...

I did know... as I read all that stuff in the eighties when Cary Bates and I did Captain Atom. The Adam/Atom pun was always more annoying than fun for me. And at least Adams felt like a real surname. So real, that letterers of the day naturally made the mistake.

Hi Greg, I'm a lifelong fan of your work since I watched Gargoyles all those years ago, and I couldn't help but notice

Throughout Gargoyles, (and even your other works such as Young Justice (such as the inclusion of Tye Longshadow) there is an Indigenous American influence in the way that Elisa Maza has Hopi ancestry, and there's other episodes that follow other Native American tribes such as Heritage, the Green, and Cloud Fathers...(which I enjoy because of the lack of representation of Native Americans within media).

I suppose the question to ask is,
1. Is it mere coincidence that you enjoy Native American characters in your work?
2. If not, where do you believe your interest in representing Native Americans on screen came from?
I apologize if this question is convoluted.

Greg responds...

1. I enjoy (and believe it's important) presenting a diverse set of characters and voices in my work. Not only Native American, but also African, Asian, and etc. This isn't some politically correct position (though it's nice that it works out that way). Rather it's completely selfish. Because otherwise... HOW BORING! Believe me, I like so-called Western Culture too, as anyone who looks at my work can see. But it's way more interesting to also include diverse points of view, diverse mythologies, etc. Plus, as a storyteller, I like my stories - no matter how fantastic - to be grounded in the real world. And the real world is a diverse place.

2. All cultures fascinate me. The great variety of Native American cultures, included.

Greg responds...

1. Then you don't see it. For me it has to do with her only truly being interested in guys that are obviously out of reach. She's fighting to be straight, which I think is not uncommon in our culture. But by choosing unattainable choices, she's guaranteeing that she won't have to actually wind up with a guy. Hi Greg,
I've really enjoyed all your work. Spectacular Spiderman s one of my "gateway" superhero shows! Thanks for that and Young Justice. This is a retype of my question because I forgot to mention how much I love Rain! I love big mystery/treasure hunts that build on themselves, and the way that Rain and Charlie save the day (no spoilers!) was so fun and cathartic. Rain's relationship with the other generations in her family is such a valuable dynamic that you just don't see elsewhere. :)

One thing still confuses me about Young Justice, though-I'm trying to understand some of the logic behind Dick's decision to keep Wally "hanging back," as you said.

Why would Dick feel there was "no shortage" of heroes? At the least, they were down the six most powerful heroes on Earth with most of the JL off-planet, and in the War World episodes, almost the entire Team was kidnapped. Why wouldn't he call Wally in then? (M'gann is really powerful, but that was a small planet they were fighting. Also, later, the Reach showed that they had an armada with hundreds of ships left over the fight with the War World - surely he'd want all hands on deck, particularly with so much of the League gone?

Why would Wally's appearance be able to catch the bad guys "off guard" after Bloodlines? Wally was already in the game; the nuclear bomb in Central was well publicized; why would his appearance be any more a surprise after that?

On the War World, Dick knew Artemis wouldn't be an issue because M'gann knew she was down under the ocean, so that wasn't a big concern. Even if Artemis did teleport to the alien world, it seems foolhardy in the extreme (almost unbelievably so) that Dick would attempt to take on a planet with only one other hero when another was supposedly waiting in the wings, ready to help whenever.

It doesn't make sense to me that Wally's appearance would be most needed and the biggest surprise only in Summit, when Dick had more backup than at any other point in the entire season and Wally had already showed up in Bloodlines. How was he more useful or a bigger surprise in a huge crowd than in a group of three on the War World, propotionally, when Dick was in the biggest trouble?

It also seems very, very strange that Dick wouldn't let Wally contribute to the efforts of bringing the people who nuked his hometown to justice. No one died that day, but their livlihoods were destroyed and there would be nuclear fallout. Even if Dick was too worried Wally would hurt himself (?), or whatever, Wally showed in Homefront that he was very capable of support - moral and technical - without necessarily getting into the fray. It seems just so strange that, if Wally really *wanted* to help, that he'd shut him out of something that had so ruined Wally's home. It seems strange that Artemis wouldn't have an issue with Dick forcing Wally to stay home, too.

As an aside, why would Dick initially try to keep the truth about Artemis's death from Wally if he *wanted* Wally to hang back for some reason? How would they guy who wanted to kill every alien robot dead in when he really believed Artemis to be dead in Failsafe be easier to control and tell to "hang back" if he REALLY thought Artemis was dead?

Logistically, to me it feels like Dick was more adept and logically minded when he was 13 than 19 with five more years of experience, which is strange. No real judgement against "Dick," really, but none of this seems to hold water at all.
I'm just trying to wrap my head around it.

I enjoyed the rest of the show a lot, though! And Rain is the best!

Thanks. :)

Dick has learned the value of (1) holding heroes in reserve (for example, in "Failsafe") - and (2) of not making any single squad too big or unmanageable and (3) of keeping people who had trained together working together.

As for Summit, Kid Flash was certainly useful there, but mostly he was there because Artemis' undercover op was coming to an end, and Wally wanted to be there, which at that point was fine with Nightwing.

Beyond that, if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. But it works fine for me, and I won't apologize for it. Nor do I agree with your interpretation of Dick's skills as a leader, season to season. But your mileage may vary.

Hello there~
First of all, I just recently re-discovered Gargoyles. I watched some episodes as a kid, but after rewatching the whole series again (minus TGC because I can't find that ANYWHERE), I only now as a 21 year old understand how fantastic that show really was. I'm only sad I'm just now finding this out, just to see that it was cancelled for various reasons.

However, I still want to support this series as much as I can. I just bought the 2nd part of season 2 from Walmart (was very shocked to see that in the Disney section!), and I've recently discovered you made a comic series that takes place after the end of season 2. I want to read this so bad, but this is such an old series now that any trace of scans are all gone due to the sites being dead. And unless I used my credit, I couldn't even afford the comics because Clan Building 1 alone goes for almost $200 now...

Sorry for the splurge of info, but I would like to know if you know of another way I can read these comics? I know I'll buy them someday, but for now I just want to read them - I'm really interested in it!

Anyway, hope life's going well, and would love to see a Gathering maybe in Wisconsin sometime! ^^

Greg responds...

I can't recommend Goliath Chronicles. We don't consider it canon.

As for the comics, I don't have a good answer for you now. They're just flat-out out of print. We're trying to rectify it, but unless you want to spend bucks on used copies - or can borrow 'em from a friend, you're just out of luck for the time being. That does NOT make me happy, as I want fans to be able to read them. But there's not much I can do about it now.

We don't really do Gatherings anymore. But I was in Madison for a convention last summer. Were you there?

How does Uncle John feel about Miss Martian and Garfield treating each other as brother and sister? Has Garfield been to Uncle John's apartment?

Greg responds...

I'm sure he's good with it. He seems the sympathetic type.

And probably.

Mr. Weisman,

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion about the title of the new Star Wars movie (The Force Awakens) and what do think is the possible meaning/interpretation behind the naming of title?

Greg responds...

I didn't know when you asked the question, and to be honest, I still don't know now. The title is just the title for me in this case. Or maybe it refers to the two young leads stepping up.

But I do like the movie.

Dear Greg

After so many years what is your opinion of the current status of Animation in America?

Second with how animation in motion pictures is telling more diverse type of stories than before with DC having great success with there direct to video animated films having success directed at a more general audience the success of anime as a genre and animation widely accepted as a medium for adult comedy why don't great series of drama action and adventure, intelligent well told stories such YJ fet taken more serious? Why are they seen as directed ot young boys who buy toys?

Greg responds...

Let me answer your second question first and work my way through the others from there.

I don't know.

I don't know why animation isn't taken more seriously by the general audience of adults. But the fact is: it isn't. Wish it wasn't so, but it is so. Even Pixar movies are largely viewed by MOST adults only if they are parents taking their children. There are a ton of exceptions, of course. And, of course, parents would rather see a movie that works on multiple levels, so that there's something for their kids, but also something for themselves, i.e. for adults. So parents/adults have learned to expect more from the animated movies of Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks/etc. because they've seen good movies from those companies and have started to learn the difference between a good animated move and a bad animated movie. And what is that difference? Well, your mileage may vary, but it's basically the same difference between a good movie and a bad movie, period.

As for a series like Young Justice, your thinking is backwards. Young boys don't buy toys. How could they? Where would they get the money? Parents buy toys for kids (boys AND girls) based on (a) what they think their kids like and (b) what their kids tell them they like.

A show like Young Justice is PAID FOR by the money that toys bring in. If there weren't toys, there wouldn't be any money to make the show. So, frankly, bitching about the shows being directed to kids for the purposes of selling toys is basically bitching about the show being made at all. Because, again, without the toy component, there is no show. NO SHOW.

That's why YJ didn't get a third season. The toyline failed. (We can spend hours discussing why, but that's another topic.) So no more money was coming in from the toy company. No money. NO SHOW. (Or no third season under that financial model, anyway.)

And I am 100% fine with that. Because I WANT kids watching Young Justice. Like a good Pixar movie, YJ is written on levels. There's plenty of eye candy for younger kids. Explosions, young heroes in costumes, etc. And plenty for tweens, teens, college students, adults and geeks of all ages to enjoy as well. That's the game plan. We have a target audience, we MUST hit, i.e. boys 6-11 years old. As long as we are successful in that demographic, everyone is happy. And everyone is HAPPIER if we also get girls 6-11 and boys 11-13, and girls 11-13 and teens and adults of all genders, etc., etc.,etc.

As for anime, and/or the DC animated movies, they are doing well - or better, at least. But let's not kid ourselves. They are still only serving niche audiences in the United States. They serve geeks of various flavors (myself included). On a grand scale - say, compared to LION KING or SHREK - they're not doing big numbers. They're just not. Fanbases on the internet fool themselves into thinking things are more popular and money-generating than they really are. "I like it and my friends like it and a bunch of strangers on the internet like it, therefore nearly EVERYONE must like it!' But that's a fallacy.

Which finally brings us to your first question: what is [my] opinion of the current status of Animation in America?

I don't know.

Christopher Jones "'... (we were going to get both Supergirl and Donna Troy as Troia), ..."'

http://www.examiner.com/article/christopher-jones-talks-parallel-man-and-young-justice

Is this true?

Greg responds...

Donna Troy/Troia and Mary Bromfield/Sergeant Marvel were scheduled to appear in Season Two at both Rocket's bridal shower and among the crowd of heroes in the season finale. But we ran out of time to design them for the shower, so she didn't appear in either episode, which was a bummer.

Supergirl was never going to be part of Season Two.

As for Season Three: NO SPOILERS.
