I really love the gargoyles tv show an when it ended I was sad cause I wanted more so I've looked for the graphic novel based on the show so far I've only found it on Amazon an unfortunately the graphic novel cost $35 so I was wondering if there is any place else I can buy it

Greg responds...

At this point, I don't know. Sorry. Wish I did.

Hi Greg! I am such a fan of all your work!!
I just wanted to say that I am glad YJ is back with you and Brandon mostly working the helm and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us :)
(you don't have to answer this but do you thing you'll have an episode where the team just watches celebrity hockey?)

Greg responds...

SPOILER ALERT: I'm fairly certain I will not have an episode where all that happens is that the Team watches Celebrity Hockey.

John Semper, script writer of Spider-Man the Animated Series from the 90s, has crowdfunded an audio drama epilogue for the show with much of the original cast. Since he's somehow allowed to do that, I wonder if you've ever thought about tying up some of Spectacular's loose ends through a full-cast audio recording of your own?

Greg responds...

I have no idea if he's ALLOWED to do that. Or if he just did it. You'd have to ask him. Personally, I wouldn't risk the lawsuit. And the spectre of getting permission, even for a non-profit venture, from both Sony and Marvel/Disney is nightmarish to me. In addition, since I have no ownership in the property, I'd want to get paid for my work. And finally, I've had my fill of crowd-funding for a lifetime.

Hi Greg. I want your opinion on a few things. Do you believe in a W.I.T.C.H. comeback in the future, maybe as live action TV series, a movie, or why not a season 3? And do you think a better option will be starting over from 0, and not go for a season 3? Maybe with a new original adaptation of the comic for this comeback? Btw I'm a big a fun of your work, and I follow all your tweets on Twitter.

Greg responds...

I really don't know.

Obviously - selfishly - my preference would be for them to re-air or make available the first two seasons and then have me work on a season three. A reboot wouldn't interest me at all.

I'm so HAPPY to hear that there are LGBT characters in Young Justice! I hope this doesn't count as a spoilery question but my question is quite simple really... When you said that, did you mean it? What I MEAN by that is... Are there LGBT Characters... As in plural? As in more than ONE?

And thats my question! As a gay male I'm so glad that you are very open minded and really do care about representation. I hope we get to see some same sex relationships in season 3! I played Young Justice in the background all the time on Netflix because I really was holding on to that sliver of hope that it would be renewed and I'm so glad that it worked!

Greg responds...

We've established that Marie Logan was either a lesbian or bi-sexual. In my mind, yes, there are other LGBTQ characters in the series, as well. But I am NOT promising anything at all about what will be revealed or seen in Season Three.

Greetings, Greg! I suppose that probably expected someone from the old days of Captain Atom fandom to pop up upon the arrival of The Rise and Fall of CA. Really enjoyed the first issue.

Anyway, someone pointed out that Gen. Eiling bears a starling resemblance to Keith David. Would I be correct in guessing this was on purpose? Was it your idea? Or did Will Conrad surprise you and Cary?

Also, the final page, and its use of a newspaper from Kansas City, evoked a scene in the Dark Tower books. That is not on purpose, right?

All the best, Greg! Looking forward to seeing what you did with Nate.

Greg responds...

Simon!!!!

Despite my personal friendship with Keith, it was actually Cary who casually suggested that Will model Eiling on Mr. David. Will did surprise us a little by taking that suggestion and running with it. Keith is tickled by it, by the way.

I'm not familar with the Dark Tower books. So it didn't come from me. But I only co-plotted The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom (not Rise and Fall, btw). Cary wrote it. Still, I'm not sure if that reference is really there, or if it was necessitated by the previously established location of the Continuum.

Now that you implied that season 3 will have LGBT characters and some homophobic intolerant hillbillies are lashing out, are you afraid of losing fans/viewers?

Greg responds...

I haven't implied anything about YJ. In fact, I went out of my way to say I wasn't talking about YJ. But, no, I'm not worried about losing fans. On any series I'm producing or show-running, I have to make the show that my partners and I want to make, that we'd enjoy watching, that we are passionate about. Because if we're not passionate about it, how can we expect any viewer to get passionate about it. So all we can do is make our show and cross our fingers that a quantity of folks like what we're doing. There's no other option.

And, by the way, I'm no more tolerant of you using terms like "hillbillies" to denigrate the homophobic jerks, than I am of them being homophobic. (Unless, you happen to know their names are Billie and they live in hills.) I think it makes it too easy to assume that the people who disagree with you are "other." Unfortunately, that kind of intolerable intolerance exists right among us. It exists among neighbors, friends and family members. Strangers, too, of course. But don't assume an enemy to acceptance exists in places you're not or that none exist in the realms you frequent.

Either none of us are other or all of us are other in our own other ways.

Its brought a joy to my heart seeing Young justice get renewed for a 3rd season, the fans really acknowledged this series a lot ! You also took a big part in YJ return. GgvvvvvvvvbbbbbbbYou gave 3 ways we could help The series get renewed for a 3rd series. Netflix also took part in this great return so I was Wondering How can we get spectacular spiderman to return for a 3rd season. There's been multiple petition People have created and multiple I've signed (including the one on change.org). There's also been a hashtag #MakeSpidermanSpectacularagain & people have been influencing others to buy spectacular spiderman on blu ray & I myself have bought it and been doing the same.. I just wanna know if we are taking a step in the right direction & if we are, is marvel and Disney seeing this? I mean they should be seeing all this. It's been going on for years and last thing , how do u feel about this whole spectacular Spiderman thing ?

Greg responds...

I'd love for Spectacular to come back, and stranger things have happened. But if I'm being honest, I don't see a clear path for it. Buying the BluRays definitely helps - or at any rate doesn't hurt. But Marvel has its own animation studio now (owned by Disney) and is understandably NOT inclined to PAY Sony (which controls the rights to Spectacular) to produce a cartoon based on their signature character. I'm sorry. Believe me.

I think in the comics they were initially supposed to be semi-fictional (mostly science fictional) versions of Libya and Iraq, respectively. But I've ignored that on Young Justice, allowing each to chart its own course.

Out of curiosity, are you aware that, in the original comics, the initial intent for the Venom symbiote was that, instead of going to Eddie Brock, it would go from Peter Parker to a WOMAN who had a grudge of her own against our friendly neighborhood web-slinger?

From what I've heard, the initial idea was that the woman would be pregnant and in labor. Then, her husband would try to wave down a taxi, and the taxi driver, who is paying more attention to Spider-Man in action instead of the road, accidentally hit and killed the woman's husband. The woman would then give birth on the spot, but the child would be a stillborn, and she'd lose her sanity because of the sudden loss of both her husband and her child, sending her to the Ravencroft Institute. She'd eventually regain her sanity and be released, but would still blame Spider-Man for the loss of her family. The symbiote would be nearby and sense her mutual hatred of the web-slinger, and bond with her to form Venom.

The reason Marvel didn't go this route, from what I hear, was that they felt their readers wouldn't consider a woman to be a physical-enough threat to Spidey. (Never mind the fact that a woman with the Venom symbiote would be, by definition, physically STRONGER than Spidey). Thus, they went with Eddie Brock, whose grudge was based on things that happened because of his own stupidity.

Here's the article describing it, just scroll down the page and you'll find it:
http://www.cbr.com/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-50/

Not to mention, as a result, it came to be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, as Spidey doesn't have a lot of MEMORABLE female villains. In fact, the only one I can think of is Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat, who is very on/off when it comes to villainy, and is TECHNICALLY a clone of Catwoman when you think about it.

Still, imagine how things might've been had they gone with the female Venom route.

Greg responds...

It's interesting, but I'm not too enamored of the scenario you described. Again, her hatred of Spider-Man is largely irrational. She could hate the cab driver. God. Whatever. I prefer things being more personal. On the other hand, the goal of having more and more powerful female villains is one I'm whole-heartedly behind.

I do hope this clears things up. I checked the links on my end and they appear to work. If they don't work for you then I'll just have to copy and paste, which will probably take up more space than I wanted to use.

Greg responds...

Okay, yeah, reread it all. (You've got the links switched, but they're both there.)

As I suspected, I wasn't upset the first time. I don't even seem to be annoyed. I was just giving you my honest response to your question, which was that I thought to some extent it was the wrong question for a writer to ask.

Mostly, I'm inclined to refer you to the show. What missions did you see Alpha get across multiple episodes? What missions did you see Beta get? Or Gamma? Etc.

My guess is you saw no real difference.

But La'gaan clearly felt that Alpha was always getting the priority missions, and that the further down the Greek Alphabet you traveled the further away from what was important you were getting. Whether that was real, subtly real, or all in his head, I'll leave up to you.

Was Snapper Carr supposed to have a larger onscreen role in young justice? In the comic book that the series was based off of he had a much larger role, why did you guys change that when you made the animated series?

Greg responds...

The series was NOT based off the 90s Young Justice comic. That was one of MANY influences, of course. But the series was based on the entire DC Universe and 75 years worth of continuity, and the 1960s and 1970s Teen Titans were easily as great an influence on us as the 90s YJ series was.

Lucas Carr's role was exactly what we wanted it to be. Believe me, since I played the part, I would have loved to have given him more screen time. But we gave him as much as fit in our series, given our limited amount of minutes and episodes.

I'll begin by saying I loved Shimmer and Shine's Season 2 episode 1. Namely because I already took a fancy to Season 1 and so enjoyed how this episode played on the norms of the previous Season while also establishing its own, like for example how it acknowledges Shimmer and Shine's mistake making tendencies while also establishing that they don't make as many as they did before. Zac getting to be "in the know" about the genies for real (and with no take-backsies) was also pretty cool.

Kaz, a boy genie, the first since that one older genie merchant in a Season 1 episode's opener, if I recall correctly, was also a great addition a few episodes later, as were Zeta and Nazboo (how I have lived my like without Nazboo up until that point, I'll never know; everyone needs a Nazboo in their lives) and Princess Samira in that same Season premiere.

Though things on that front are likely set in stone, I will say that the only things I wish that Season had more of (from what I've seen; I need to watch the episodes that have aired since they came back from their last break) is Zac. Zac was a unique kind of starlight in the Season 1 episodes, whether it be in a secondary plot of his, like with that crab early on, or in a primary one, and it is this spark, shown clearly in the first episode of Season 2, that makes it so gratifying for him to finally be let in on the secret, and gain a genie and lamp of his very own (and boy has Zac earned it!). With that in mind, the fact that he's almost never around anymore (from the episodes I've seen thus far, at least) really kind of dims some of the show's starlight, at least from my outside-of-target-audience perspective.

The general lack of Kaz (clever naming scheme by the way) has similar issues for me, since when he is around, he makes for a wonderful contrast to the more extroverted Shimmer and Shine.

Lastly, I don't think Rocket has shown up at all. That is down right "criminal", namely 'cause I like him, he's cute, his interactions with everybody is always some form of awesome, and everyone else, bar Kaz, having a pet, particularly the new Samira and Zeta, makes the lack of Rocket almost feels like it was purposeful. It definitely makes it more noticeable for me.

With that said, here are a few questions for you:

1.) Was it taken into account that Zac already met Shimmer and Shine in the previous Season's Halloween episode (A Very Genie Halloweenie) when he meets them again in Season 2's first episode, or was that just an oversight?

2.) Who came up with the idea of Zeta's, Nazboo's, Kaz's, and Samira's characters, especially Nazboo and Kaz's?

3.) Similarly, who came up with the general change in story direction? Actually getting to see Zahramay Falls was a simple stroke of genius, and I've read from a production website that talked about upcoming and current cartoons under its name that Season 3 will go even beyond Zahramay Falls. Just wondering who's to thank for that?

4.) Will we ever see the "real" world again in the episodes and Season to come?

5.) More personal opinion, but do you agree/disagree that we, generally speaking, need more Nazboo in our lives? :D

Well, thank you for your time. A lot of folks love you for some of everything else you've worked on, and here I am talking to you about Shimmer and Shine. I hope you don't mind too much.

And now, for the long wait for a hopeful answer, with the additional hope that I won't end up overlooking it when/if it does come. It has just dawned on me that, as of the time of this writing, you're still on late August...

Greg responds...

I don't want to claim for an instant to be the final word on Shimmer and Shine. That was not my role on the show.

Zac and Kaz, I believe have plenty of appearances over the course of the two seasons I worked on (i.e. Seasons Two and Three). I also fought to bring Rocket back, and... well, NO SPOILERS.

1. I'm sorry, I can't remember. I'm so immersed in YJ right now, it's pushed other things out of my head. And I came on staff after the season two premiere of S&S was written.

2. Again, I came aboard after they were already a part of the show, but I'd guess it was some combination of second season story editor Stephanie Simpson and series creator Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz.

3. Stephanie, I believe made the initial suggestion. Then she and Farnaz worked it out with staff writer Dustin Ferrer and others on the series. Again, all just before my time.

3a. The direction for Season Three sounds like spoiler territory, so I'm not going to spoil.

4. No spoilers.

5. I do. Yes. Indeed, I do.

Well, I'm answering December questions in March. That's some improvement, anyway.

Hello Greg! I hope you are doing well and I want to congratulate you for Young Justice season 3 being commissioned. I cannot wait to see it. Here are my questions:

1. How long was your timeline for Spec Spidey, if you had one? I know you had eventual plans to go into Peter's college years and beyond if you had the chance, so I was curious if you had stories, characters, and events such as deaths, graduations, etc. planned out? I'm not asking what stories you wanted to tell but I am curious if you had a long outline, similar to Garg and YJ.

2. Why did you make MJ and Gwen friends in the series? It was a change I loved and considering where Pete and Gwen end up in the comics and where Pete and MJ end up, I thought it was a brilliant idea.

3. For YJ and Spec, was Jamie Thomasson a comic book fan? I ask because I wonder if him being a possible comic book fan helped him cast parts in the show easier. Did he only rely on your scripts or also on other source material?

Can't wait for YJ season 3 and hoping for Garg comics! And I still hold out hope you can write Spider-Man again in another form! Take care Greg and good luck.

Greg responds...

1. I did have one. But I don't remember how long it was, and I don't have access to it here at my Warner Bros office.

2. I didn't come up with it. They were on and off friends in the comics.

3. You'd have to ask him, but I don't recall him being a hardcore geek like me.

Happy belated holidays. This is more of a ramble of sorts in regards to Gargoyles. Now me personally I'm more of a superhero fan which is why I like Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice better but Gargoyles is still a blast to watch. Going through the archive and watching a couple episodes of Gargoyles, it's easy to see that you put a LOT of thought and passion into it in regards to crafting the Gargoyles mythos. I'm assuming that since it is more or less an original work out of your head and other writers of the show, you probably had a real blast in writing it. The rambles you wrote on how the episodes came together and whatnot were really entertaining to read. Probably my two favorite parts of the show were the Third Race and the Gargoyles interpretation of Arthurian lore. Weaving so many mythologies and folklore under one umbrella was a pretty neat idea. And I had no idea that the island of Avalon came from the legends of Arthur. I know Disney is in control of the property but if they ever give SLG (I think that's the company) the license again I would read it in a heartbeat. You both implied in the show and outright stated so many interesting things about the future of where you going to take the stories that my interest is beyond piqued. Thanks for reading this and hope it didn't waste your time or anything.

Greg responds...

Thanks for the kind words. We always thought we were working firmly in the super-hero genre - bastard genre though it is - in our storytelling, just minus the trappings (capes, tights, etc.). Glad the show's working for you. Obviously, I'd recommend watching all 65 episodes of the first two seasons in order, followed by the eighteen existing issues of the SLG comic book series.

And, yes, we're all hopeful that the comic will come back sooner than later.

4. I'm not confirming your "if". But, yes, he started before he was just a brain in a dome.

5. Yes.

Hi there! I'm a huge fan of the W.I.T.C.H tv series, I grew up on it and it actually inspired me to study animation (first year student)! I recently discovered your speculation about Nerissa and Cassidy being lovers and as a bisexual woman this fills my heart with so much joy (even if it did end in, well, death). I have a few questions about C.H.Y.K.N. if that's okay!

1. Do you believe that Kadma and Halinor had a romantic relationship, either as guardians or later on in life?
2. Was their a reason for Kadma and Halinor's stories being drastically changed in the show? I recall them running and orphanage together in the comics, I'm curious if there was a reason why at least one of them wasn't still on Earth (and why Halinor was written as a loyal follower of the Oracle, and not a defector).
3. What time period exactly were C.H.Y.K.N. at large in? I've calculated the late fifties to mid sixties, but it really depends when the show is set.
4. Was there ever going to be a C.H.Y.KN. arc showing more flashbacks of their time as guardians, if more seasons were produced?

Thank you so much for your time, W.I.T.C.H. is one of my biggest inspirations as an aspiring animator and I especially really enjoyed the second season's plot with the past guardians! I hope you're doing well!

Greg responds...

1. I'm not saying no, but I don't recall ever thinking that.

2. We adapted the comics we had at hand at the time. But we needed to make some changes, both to fit the first season of the television show and to create certain dynamics for our second season. That meant putting all five members of CHYKN in diverse locations, doing different thing so that none of their corruptions would feel repetitive.

3. I don't remember the math.

4. Given enough episodes, I would have loved to do that. I didn't have any specific plans. But I loved the characters.

1. Why was the "Reach Planetary Acquisition Code" created?
2. What does Article 16 say?
2.1. Why was it created?

Greg responds...

1. Bureaucracy happens.

2. I think that was pretty clear from the episode.

3. For situations like that.

Hey Greg!
I just wanted to say thank you for your dedication to the Young Justice characters. They're a part of my family, and I know they're a part of yours.
You brought a 30 year old man to tears on announcing season 3. A 30 year old man who must have streamed YJ seasons on Netflix 20+ times and bought all the comics on the dc app.

Did you ever give up hope on season 3? I have followed you guys online and I know you said that there was hope since the show hit Netflix, but was there ever a temptation to share the stories with the fans, thinking the show would never reach season 3? In my mind, these characters and their untold stories were in you both, and they'd reach us all eventually.
It's a most beautiful comeback story.
Noting what happened with season 2, I truly hope the show is on Netflix. To have the greatest stories these characters have ever told, at the whim of sometimes fickle networks would be a little unnerving. Having said that, I do trust that you've both placed our heroes somewhere their stories will be safe.
Thank you for the heroes, thank you for the stories and thank you for never giving up

Greg responds...

1. Hope ebbed and flowed.

2. No temptation to do that. I've learned the hard way that revealing ideas minus their execution is a recipe for disaster. (Or at least mild annoyance.) Certainly, no good comes of it. Besides, there was always the chance it might come back in comic book form.

3 I haven't "placed" the show anywhere. Let's make that clear. I have absolutely ZERO control over where it airs or streams or whatever. ZERO. That's way, way, way above my paygrade. Brandon and I are making the best show we can, but that's where our control ends.

What are your favorite non-Big Two comics?

Greg responds...

I'm afraid I'm not reading any right now. I'm mostly only reading DC Rebirth titles now, as potential research for YJ.

Historically, I was a big fan of Love and Rockets and Cerebus and many others.

I have a bad habit of getting DVD's as presents or while they're on sale and not watching them for years. Case in point, I just finally watched my Young Justice episodes. I planned to write a review of season one, and I was a little disappointed at how anticlimactic the whole thing was. Then I realized I only had the first twelve episodes. Well, I've got a little time, so I'll write a season 1 part 1 review.

First, background: I was always more of a Marvel guy, and I know practically nothing about the DC universe. Well, I know a lot about Batman's corner thanks to various TV shows, movies, video games (Arkham City is one of the best games of all time), and a few graphic novels. Aside from that, I could tell you a handful of things about Superman and maybe the names of some other characters. So I'm mostly going in blind on this one. I've heard some descriptions of events from fans on S8, but I don't know who Vandal Savage is anyway (some sort of thousand year old caveman, I think?), so spoilers don't mean much. One funny thing, though, is that I usually watch DVD's with subtitles so I don't miss any dialogue, and in the scenes where the mysterious members of The Light talk, the subtitles gave their names. Like: "Vandal Savage: Blah blah blah. Brain: Blah blah blah." That's a pretty embarrassing slip-up.

It's hard to approach an ensemble show, because there are so many characters we have to get to know. Spectacular Spider-Man was about Peter Parker. Gargoyles was about the Manhattan Clan but almost always seen from Goliath's point of view. But there's not really one "main character" on Young Justice. As a result, the show seemed to focus on quirks as a shortcut to characterization. Things like Robin's playing with pronouns, Wally's souvenir collecting, and "Hello, Megan" are helpful to me, as I often have trouble keeping straight who's who in a large cast. On the other hand, it's not exactly depth of characterization. The only one I really connected with was Aqualad and his conflict over where he belonged and whether he should be leader. I kind of liked Superboy's trying to deal with his "father," as well, and the implied budding romance between Wally and Artemis was cute. Red Arrow/Speedy was a jerk, and Crispin Freeman did a good job making me dislike him. There's potential there, for sure, but I'm hoping we plunge a little deeper into the characters in the back half.

As for the story, it's very different depending on whose POV you have. If we only saw the heroes, it would be almost entirely episodic. Each conflict appears to be separate from the others. My favorite episode was probably whichever one where they all get amnesia. I also liked the prison riot and the bit in episode 12 where Robin and Artemis are the only ones not captured, and Artemis has to save the day. There's an old joke about why the Justice League (or the Avengers, for that matter) have "guy with arrows" in a team of the most powerful people on Earth. This episode has the character herself acknowledge that, and have to overcome the resulting feelings of insecurity. On the other hand, from the villains' perspective it's all connected. Most episodes ended with one of your patented "Xanatos Tags," where the villains muse about how they didn't get everything they wanted but still advanced their overall plan. The Light, whatever they are, are gradually taking over more and more, but they're doing it under the radar so as not to bring down the hammer on themselves. So I like the core concept that Young Justice is also a below the radar group to confront them. At this point, though, it's not really clear what they're after, and some of the tags strain plausibility. They staged a prison riot and mass escape attempt just to get Hugo Strange in charge? That seems like overkill. I guess they also wanted some of the prisoners to escape if possible, but only The Riddler did. I'm hoping he gets a moment of glory later in the show.

So far, I'd say this show is good, not great. I enjoyed it, and there was good action and humor, but the whole thing felt kind of inconsequential. I guess that's the problem with reviewing half a season- it's deliberately not a whole story, so there's no way to know what's important and what's not. Hopefully, it all builds to something bigger and more exciting by the end. I know season 2 involves a five year time skip and is called "Invasion," so that certainly has promise. I'll let you know when I've finished the first season, but for now I'd give it a B, or 3 out of 4 stars.

Greg responds...

Okey-doke.

How deep is the connection between the League of Shadows and The Light? Is it like a partnership or is the League just another one of their puppets?

Greg responds...

Neither.

The League of Shadows is run by Ra's al Ghul and has been for centuries. Ra's is a member of the Light, so the Shadows are at the Light's disposal through Ra's. So it's not a partnership. But calling them "puppets" doesn't make any sense either.

How smart is Red Arrow? Did he go to college? Did he make his own equipment after going solo? How did he get his equipment after going solo?

1. I don't know how to quantify this.

2. As of when?

3. Mostly.

4. Combination of making it and purchasing it.

Hi Greg, hope your day is going well, just wanted to say thanks for creating and producing all of these great shows, comics, and novels, and thank you very much for taking time out of your probably busy schedule to answer fan's questions.
1. How long does it take to make an episode of an animated series, like Spectacular Spider-Man or Young Justice?
2. Is Aquaman's son really named Artur, or was that just a typo in the video game?
3. What would it take to relaunch the Young Justice comic book series?
And I know these are probably spoilery, so I won't ask, but Zatanna and Rocket were some of my favorite characters in season one. Really hoping you guys get enough episodes to bring a resolution to the Zatanna/Zatara/Dr.Fate storyline, and we can finally find out who Rocket'a husband is! But if neither of these end up happening, I'm sure we'll get a fantastic Season 3 story from you guys no matter what. Ecstatic that YJ is back!

Greg responds...

1. Depends what you mean. You see, no one makes a SINGLE episode. From coming up with the springboard for the story, all the way through post-production, until it's in the can, it takes somewhere from between ten and thirteen months, depending on the schedule.

2. Artur is correct.

3. It would help if a lot of people bought electronic versions of the issues already published, either on the DC App, Comixology or iTunes.
