Rewatched "M.I.A." today. One detail stood out to me this time; the human Londoners grouped in the background at the very end are the same ones we saw in Act I staring at the gargoyles in shock and alarm, when Leo and Una are confronting Goliath outside their shop. It made a pleasant touch, I thought, to see that those people have now recognized (judging from the way they were shown at the conclusion) that they didn't need to be scared of the gargoyles.

Greg responds...

Yep.

Hello again,
1) How do the clans determine the names of newly-born members?
a) Ishimura
b) London
c) Manhattan
d) Labyrinth

2) Did Nashville itself determined his name or were his parents?

Greg responds...

1 a-d. No spoilers.

2. No spoilers.

I was looking at some of your responses from 2001 and I noticed a response that indicated that the New Olympian Clan population was around a hundred Gargoyles. This seemed a rather low number for a clan that lives in relative isolation and safety. Lower even then the canonical 198 of the London Clan; so naturally I’m quite curious about it.

1) Why is the New Olympian Clan population so low?
2) Which of the still surviving Gargoyle Clans has the highest population?

Greg responds...

1. They may be practicing population control, as London does.

2. Don't want to lock myself in on that.

Hi big fan of the series gargoyles thank you so much for your part in creating the show. My question is during the creation of the gargoyles were did the ideas of there look come form for instance London clans animal features wyvern clans beaks horns human faces and so on also Hm which were your favorite clan artwork my personal favorite wyven/avalon clan

Greg responds...

I don't really play favorites. They're all my children.

The idea that the London clan would be modeled (loosely) after heraldic animals was mine. Not the execution, of course. Credit for that goes mostly to our lead character designer Greg Guler.

The idea for Zafiro being serpentine was also mine. We just looked to Aztec, Olmec & Mayan art for inspiration.

Hello, Greg! Super-excited to get my hands on Rain of the Ghosts and ready to come to you for questions but first, a question about the London Clan:

Since the clan runs the shop Into the Mystic, does that mean that they have to pay taxes on it? If so, how are they registered in the system? Do they have aliases, or do they have the human employees do all the work?

Thank you very much, and I hope Rain of the Ghosts sells a kajillion copies!

Greg responds...

They pay taxes. They're in the system. But there's some subterfuge involving tax attorneys (solicitors?) who have never met their clients in person.

And I hope you're right about RAIN!!!

How are names chosen for members of the London Clan if the young are raised communally? Do the youngsters choose their own names when they grow older? Does each member of the clan choose a hatchling to name? Is there a gargoyle whose job it is to give every hatchling a name?

Greg responds...

There's this hat...

Hey Greg.

In July 2008, Chip asked you "Do Leo and Una have any biological children, and have we seen them so far in the comics?" and you responded "Lunette is theirs. That wasn't meant to be a secret. Leo + Una = Lunette."

Did you mean that this wasn't meant to be a secret from us or did you mean that Leo and Una and the London Clan themselves are aware of Lunette's biological parentage? You've said in the past that the London Clan continues to raise their young in the Gargoyle Way, but they are not blind. Despite the communal parenting, do they generally have a good idea about which hatchling came from which couple? And was Lunette's name, and it's Leo+Una-like pronunciation more than a coincidence. Was the name given to her because the Clan knew her parentage?

Thanks!

Greg responds...

I meant it wasn't meant to be a secret from the fans.

Beyond that, Lunette was a longstanding name within the clan, with Arthurian associations.

Did you name the London Clan's magic shop, Into the Mystic, after the Van Morrison song?

Greg responds...

I didn't name it. I assume either Gary Sperling or Robert Cohen named it.

When you were creating the other clans how did you decide which locations would have still have Gargoyle Clans over the others?

Greg responds...

Some of it was about logic (like the clan on New Olympus). Some about story ideas we had (like M.I.A.). Some about a desire for geographic distribution (like the Mayan clan in Guatemala). Sometimes it just felt right, like the notion that there would eventually be a clan in Paris at Notre Dame, site of some of the most famous Gargoyles in the world. Sometimes it was as silly as ... hey, they're animating the series in Japan and Korea, so let's put clans there. At some point later on, the ideas became more fixed and were explored (at least in my head) in much more detail.

I’ve asked before without receiving an answer, but just in case this catches you on a generous day: How long has the London Clan been without Gargoyle-Beasts?

Greg responds...

Not saying at this time.
