Just because somebody oughta say something . . .

I saw Santa Clause 2 today. Cute Christmas movie, though I hadn't been planning on seeing it. Some of the little girls were adorable, and for me the best part was just seeing Legaspi again. I hadn't heard that Michael Dorn or Kath Soucie were in it, however - him as the Sandman, and her as the voice of a reindeer. In fact, Kath's really been busy lately, hasn't she? I've seen her name in the credits of two recent Samurai Jacks too.

And I saw previews for Finding Nemo, the new Pixar movie (looks like a lot of fun), and Treasure Planet (looks like another Atlantis).

Yep, everything from episode 63 to the bitter end. And it mainly sucked because it was filler that was intended to kill time while the Manga got ahead. Unfortuntely that filler killed the ratings and by the time the manga got enough material to do another arc the show was cancelled. In other words 63-up is the Garlic Jr of Rurouni Kenshin.

Thats the point. Compared with the rest of the cast he's a balanced, sane, composed individual. He's also got personality going for him, something that only Sally Poe and Troah's girlfriend in the Circus have. The other Gundam pilots (and Releena, Queen of the World State - that got me breaking out into laughter every time I heard it) are just so way out of it.

True; although thats more because the insane tend to be more reckless and willing to take risks rather than due to major strategy. And what does strategy have to do with a mecha you ask? Absolutely nothing. :-) Thats why the average age of a mecha pilot tends to be 15 years old.

Need someone to pilot a mecha to save the world and humanity from destruction? Don't look to soldiers trained to fight! Find the nearest depressed disgruntled 15 year old and stick him in a mecha! And make him nervous by telling him that the fate of the world rests on his shoulders but never, ever tell him how to actually work the mecha. That takes up too much time. Then just sit back and watch him save the world.

Gundam Wing> I thought the dub was mostly good. My only issue was how blatant everything was. There was absolutely no subtlety in the whole show. But other than that, it was pretty good.

I've seen interpretations that suggest that the Eye is actually sentient, and actively corrupts it's wearer, sort of like the One Ring, but I don't think that's true. I think the Eye is simply a tool. A really, really powerful tool. One simply too powerful for mere mortals to use. After all, we all know the old saying: "All power corrupts, absolute power... is kinda neat."

Interesting footnote to that episode. Ed Azner (Hudson) was the voice of the Editor. Makes sense since he was also the voice of Jameson in the mid 90's Spiderman cartoon.

I've been a fan of his since his appearances in the first and last Indiana Jones movies, myself. A really dependable actor, and I hope he's doing well.

In other "useless Gargoyles trivia", I caught Superman on Cartoon Network last week and saw "the lost appearance of Agent Martin Hacker". There's this old episode called "Where There's Smoke", which was always a favorite of mine - action-packed, great voices (Peri Gilpin, William H Macy, Peter Gallagher), a Firestarter-meets-Men In Black storyline. And there's this one scene where a MIB threatens to shoot Superman with a "blue laser", and I thought to myself the other day, "Man, that guy looks and sounds just like Martin Hacker." I think the Illuminati must rent him out to other secret evil organizations.

Some bad news about the voice behind our favorite immortal Scotsman...

IMDb reports, "Lord Of The Rings star John Rhys-Davies is in hospital after a stage wall fell on him during filming of his latest movie. The actor, who plays Dwarf Lord Gimli in the Tolkien film trilogy, was filming La Femme Musketeer in Croatia when the incident happened. He was taken to hospital suffering from head injuries and a broken forearm. The accident happened just hours after Rhys-Davies, 58, gave an interview in which he said he avoided all danger on set and insisted on having a stuntman for every action scene, however minor. The piece of scenery fell on him while on location at an old Castle in the western Croatian town of Pazin. A spokesperson for the Croatian co-production company Jadran-film said they were hoping the actor might be fit to return for some scenes in a few weeks time."

I think trying to compare the Ring and the Eye is too specific. The fact is that both of them spring from a common archetype. In almost all myths involving powerful artifacts, they are shown to be ultimately destructive. All such cases are permutations of the ancient idea of hubris. Artifacts of this type are generally seen as coming from something far beyond mortal powers, and so a mortal's trying to control them is to elevate oneself to the level of gods. Since no mortal was ever meant to posess that sort of power, it is impossible not to be corrupted.
