Just because somebody oughta say something . . .

I saw Santa Clause 2 today. Cute Christmas movie, though I hadn't been planning on seeing it. Some of the little girls were adorable, and for me the best part was just seeing Legaspi again. I hadn't heard that Michael Dorn or Kath Soucie were in it, however - him as the Sandman, and her as the voice of a reindeer. In fact, Kath's really been busy lately, hasn't she? I've seen her name in the credits of two recent Samurai Jacks too.

And I saw previews for Finding Nemo, the new Pixar movie (looks like a lot of fun), and Treasure Planet (looks like another Atlantis).

Sincerely, Allaine

P.S. Lilo & Stitch finally comes out on tape next week. Now I can finally see the whole thing :)

*the sound of the pin hitting the floor echoes loudly in the silence. As it finally fades away, a faint rumbling takes its place. The room begins to shake as the rumbling grows to thunderous proportions.* Avalanche!

Dammit, Patrick, you should know better! ;)

AARON - You wrote: [I'm going to guess that's right after the Shi-Shi-o arc, right? That seems to be the point at which the writers abandoned continuity in favor of totally raping the characters.]

Yep, everything from episode 63 to the bitter end. And it mainly sucked because it was filler that was intended to kill time while the Manga got ahead. Unfortuntely that filler killed the ratings and by the time the manga got enough material to do another arc the show was cancelled. In other words 63-up is the Garlic Jr of Rurouni Kenshin.

You wrote: [One could argue that that's kind of the point of the series, that war is stupid no matter how you rationalize it.]

Isn't that basically just every Gundam series more or less?

You wrote: [Dude, what? Duo's neither sane or normal.]

Thats the point. Compared with the rest of the cast he's a balanced, sane, composed individual. He's also got personality going for him, something that only Sally Poe and Troah's girlfriend in the Circus have. The other Gundam pilots (and Releena, Queen of the World State - that got me breaking out into laughter every time I heard it) are just so way out of it.

You wrote: [Besides, it's a law of anime that sane, normal people make awful mech pilots. The crazier you are, the better you'll be, and Duo is damn good.]

True; although thats more because the insane tend to be more reckless and willing to take risks rather than due to major strategy. And what does strategy have to do with a mecha you ask? Absolutely nothing. :-) Thats why the average age of a mecha pilot tends to be 15 years old.

Need someone to pilot a mecha to save the world and humanity from destruction? Don't look to soldiers trained to fight! Find the nearest depressed disgruntled 15 year old and stick him in a mecha! And make him nervous by telling him that the fate of the world rests on his shoulders but never, ever tell him how to actually work the mecha. That takes up too much time. Then just sit back and watch him save the world.

It was "Sliders" not "Striders."

Yea, it was a long day for me. Sorry.

Gundam Wing> I thought the dub was mostly good. My only issue was how blatant everything was. There was absolutely no subtlety in the whole show. But other than that, it was pretty good.

DemonSpawn> <<Cloning is fairly accurate>> Except for the "forty tries to get one *sheep*, which is aging faster then it should be" part. Not that we had enough time to see if Thailog was aging like a gargoyle should, but it didn't seem to be a problem. Nor was it implied that there were previous attempts before Thailog. Plus, it can't be easy to clone a sentient animal with biological processes unlike anything else in nature.

<<Inu Yasha>> But it's not a movie. It's a series. A *Takahashi* series at that, which means they don't have to cut it down at all. In fact, they're adding filler episodes so the manga can stay ahead of the series. That's not my complaint. It's more like this: Sure, you could probably tell the story from "The Matrix" without all the gunplay and super-human kung-fu, but would the final product be as cool?

Airwalker> <<if it becomes like Rurouni Kenshin S3.>> I'm going to guess that's right after the Shi-Shi-o arc, right? That seems to be the point at which the writers abandoned continuity in favor of totally raping the characters.

<<I found the characters outside of Duo Maxwell to be completely unsympathetic and the philosophy that they kept mouthing in the entire series to be complete and utter nonsense.>> One could argue that that's kind of the point of the series, that war is stupid no matter how you rationalize it.

<<Scott McNeil did do a good job voicing the only sane, normal character in the series.>> Dude, what? Duo's neither sane or normal. He's got a wicked case of bi-polar disorder, and he semi-believes that his Gundam houses the soul of his dead best friend. Besides, it's a law of anime that sane, normal people make awful mech pilots. The crazier you are, the better you'll be, and Duo is damn good. (It's also why Quatre and Wu-fei are such scrubs compared to Heero and Duo)

Edge> <<the Eye could simply have made him more pacifistic, pragmatic, and genuinely benevolent.>> Um, pacifistic and pragmatic are traits that are totally at odds with each other...

The Eye in general> I think the Eye offers insight into parts of the wearer that the wearer would rather not contemplate, by magnifying them and allowing them to take over the wearer's personality. Unpleasant, yes, but possibly helpful. I'm not ruling out the possibility, but I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that I don't think the Eye is even evil. I've seen interpretations that suggest that the Eye is actually sentient, and actively corrupts it's wearer, sort of like the One Ring, but I don't think that's true. I think the Eye is simply a tool. A really, really powerful tool. One simply too powerful for mere mortals to use. After all, we all know the old saying: "All power corrupts, absolute power... is kinda neat."

John Rhys-Davies> That sucks. Hope he gets better soon.

John Rhys-Davies---Sending him healing vibes and hopes he has a quick recovery.

Jurgan]----"And I will imagine you delivering it while wearing the Lady Marmalade outfit…"
Okay and I will imagine actually Hugging Jason C.

Jimmy]---"It's not funny unless you've seen the episode where Homer becomes a food critic."

Interesting footnote to that episode. Ed Azner (Hudson) was the voice of the Editor. Makes sense since he was also the voice of Jameson in the mid 90's Spiderman cartoon.

I've been a fan of his since his appearances in the first and last Indiana Jones movies, myself. A really dependable actor, and I hope he's doing well.

In other "useless Gargoyles trivia", I caught Superman on Cartoon Network last week and saw "the lost appearance of Agent Martin Hacker". There's this old episode called "Where There's Smoke", which was always a favorite of mine - action-packed, great voices (Peri Gilpin, William H Macy, Peter Gallagher), a Firestarter-meets-Men In Black storyline. And there's this one scene where a MIB threatens to shoot Superman with a "blue laser", and I thought to myself the other day, "Man, that guy looks and sounds just like Martin Hacker." I think the Illuminati must rent him out to other secret evil organizations.

Sincerely, Allaine

Some bad news about the voice behind our favorite immortal Scotsman...

IMDb reports, "Lord Of The Rings star John Rhys-Davies is in hospital after a stage wall fell on him during filming of his latest movie. The actor, who plays Dwarf Lord Gimli in the Tolkien film trilogy, was filming La Femme Musketeer in Croatia when the incident happened. He was taken to hospital suffering from head injuries and a broken forearm. The accident happened just hours after Rhys-Davies, 58, gave an interview in which he said he avoided all danger on set and insisted on having a stuntman for every action scene, however minor. The piece of scenery fell on him while on location at an old Castle in the western Croatian town of Pazin. A spokesperson for the Croatian co-production company Jadran-film said they were hoping the actor might be fit to return for some scenes in a few weeks time."

Let's all wish John a fast recovery.

From the dept. of pointless information...

Six Degress of Gargoyles.

This week: Kevin Nash of WWF/WCW wrastlin' fame.

Kevin Nash was Super Shredder in TMNT:2 (Yes, he was)
David Warner was Professor Perry in TMNT:2
David Warner was the voice of Archmage in Gargoyles.

Sorry. Been in bed today fighting a cold and pulled out the box of old movies and found TMNT:2 and popped it in. For some reason this just struck me funny.

I think trying to compare the Ring and the Eye is too specific. The fact is that both of them spring from a common archetype. In almost all myths involving powerful artifacts, they are shown to be ultimately destructive. All such cases are permutations of the ancient idea of hubris. Artifacts of this type are generally seen as coming from something far beyond mortal powers, and so a mortal's trying to control them is to elevate oneself to the level of gods. Since no mortal was ever meant to posess that sort of power, it is impossible not to be corrupted.

"HUG sorry you have to deal with that evil thing." Well, I like the subject, I just didn't expect the project to be so hard when I started working on it, and I ended up unable to finish. I will accept the hug, though. And I will imagine you delivering it while wearing the Lady Marmalade outfit... Awwww- no wait, that's not right... Agggghh- how would one spell the Homer Simpson drooling sound?

My Gathering Essay got workshopped and once I finished the revision I'll put it online.

The Eye and the Ring Similarities

Both hold great power
Both seem to corrupt those who wear it
Both are hard to get rid of.
Both have been seen attached to chains and worn around the neck

Differences
The Ring makes you invisible
The Eye magnifies certain traits to help the wearer become what they most desire.

The Eye causes almost instant physical transformations
The Ring takes years and years to change someone physically

The Ring came from a Very very evil thing
The Eye came from a noble Fey

The Ring Must not be returned to its owner
The Eye had to be.

Bud-Claire]---"Fox's self-loathing"
Fox has self loathing? I never really noticed if she had that before. It does make sense in a way. She hated the part of her that was Janine I thought that the eye magnified that part of her she tried to be, The Fox. She did everything possible to ditch her as Janine Renard. She kept thinking of herself as the Fox and actually became a werefox

GXB]----"And I just had a weird image of Fox refering to the Eye of Odin as "My Precious." ;)"

Oh Good lord!. Can't see Fox as a Gollum…Lexington though.

You know what's good about room wipes? If I stop reading for a couple days, as I did this week, I'll be so far behind I can never catch up, but once the room is wiped, I can stroll back in as if nothing ever happened.

Has anyone seen the latest question at Ask Greg?

"tell me the answer first writes...

What did Titania say to Fox at the end of The Gathering?
If you dont answer this(like you dont to all the other people who ask you this)I will assume that you dont even know the answer."

Bad enough to ask stupid questions, but now someone's just being a smartass.
