Er.. Sorry for so many posts.
Question> Where is this Ryan post dogging on us I've heard about? And a friend sent me a pic one of us took at the Gathering, of the full masquerade cast in the group pic, with a caption something like: "And I thought those Star Trek geeks were bad!". Well, I told him. At least it is advertising our pic:) I think it was CHUD.com. Whatever that is...

Also, will the very awesome lady who portrayed Elisa in the radio play and had so much screen time on the DVD interview please keep in touch with us? I had the awesome pleasure of talking with her and though not professional yet, I would love to see her go far in voice acting. I seriously think she is the best 'person off the street' I've ever heard. Such depth of voice!

*lol* Talk about a raving fan. I'm raving about the talents OF the fans! *laughs at herself some more*

Anywho, I finally got my dvds and watched the doc. Couldn't wait for my family to join me for it:) I am on at least three times. Yes, I'm the chick in the Belle costume. For those not in Montreal, I went as Elisa as Belle from "Eye of the Beholder", but with accurate hair color:) THanks much for Mandolin for helping do my hair! *hugs* THe second thing that struck me was how well the thing was put together. Yes, like many, I'd pay to see a 2 or 4 hr version doc. but what was there... *whistles appreciatively* Wow. Will be sending a good letter to Disney. Thanks, Gathering Staff for sending that around! *waves to Kathy* You do reach us!

BTW, on the dvd front, I bought 3 copies, my friends bought me one, a friend bought one for himself, and I'll be buying one more for charity. I found only one place which sells them, aside from Amazon. Despite having Best Buy, Tower Records, Suncoast, Target, and Walmart, actually only Walmart purchased any aside from special orders, like Suncoast told me. Walmart had 12 copies the day after the dvd came out! *does a dance* THAT was impressive as far as I've read in here. Three copies to sell indeed! This is _Gargoyles_, people!

Just a thought and not in anyway trying to start anymore "How to make Ask Greg better" discussions, but

I visit the Don Bluth site www.donbluth.com pretty often. And you can ask Don Bluth and Gary Goldman questions. They seem to be the only people to maintain that and do not have an archieve. But they get similar questions like Greg does here. For instance, I remember a long time ago someone asked Greg about Prince of Egypt, believing he had something to do with it. Bluth gets those same questions. He also gets easily answered ones. Like "Who did the voice of Cale on Titan A.E.?" Anyone can do a quick search online to find that. So believe me, Greg isn't the only one to get people who think if your in animation, then you must work on EVERYTHING animated.

Just letting everyone know that we are rounding up the finishing touches on the gargoyle comics website. Sorry for the delays.

On a random note. This is very off topic in the room. Does anyone remember this old tv show in the 80's. It was about evie a girl who was half human and alien and she talked to her dad in through this crystal cube. Wierd things kept happening. I think it was called out of this world? I'm just curious to see who remembers that.

Back on the topic of gargoyles... I love the dvd so much. I went and bought 2 more of them. One to play for kids at the vet office where I work and one for my friends. Got them at target agian. Best buy Does not seem to have them where I live.

Todd> No, it's not difficult, I just wanted you to be aware of the hookups. I didn't mean to make it sound all complicated or anything. Just make sure you connect the dvd to the tv directly, I tried going through the vcr and that's what caused the problem. My tv was made around 1992, I think....anyway, you've got the video in and audio in jacks, you'll be fine.

The TV in my office is circa 1980-something. DVD player works just fine on it.

What you'll need to do is look at the connections on the TV to see if you'll need an adaptor. Older TVs only have a connection for a coaxial cable -- the dealie where you'd hook up an antenna. If your TV only has a coaxial cable connection (and not multicolored connections that match the DVD player's plugs) you'll need to buy an adaptor.

IIRC, the adaptor was about $20 when I bought it for my TV.

After Christmas, there ought to be a *lot* of cheap sales on DVD players, too, BTW.

Hey room.

I got back from Orlando a few days ago. Good trip, though I was glad to be heading home at the end. I'm sorry to report that the Walt Disney World Resort did not seem to have much in the way of "Gargoyles" DVDs. Mind you, I wasn't looking too feverishly, since I have my copy plus a spare right now. But I did look in a couple of places and no dice. I didn't even see it at the Virgin Megastore in Downtown Disney, which I found really surprising. I don't remember who it was who said they were going to try to find the DVD at Downtown, but I hope you had better luck than me.

I did see one bit of Gargoyles related merchandise on my trip. One of the cast members at the magic kingdom had that pin with the Goliath logo on it on her lanyard. Though I did indulge in some pin collecting, I didn't trade for this one since I had bought it some time ago.

Anyways, getting home allowed me time to actually watch my DVD, which has been a lot of fun. I'm hoping to have a review out sometime next week if the holidays aren't too hectic.

Yep, the television has the yellow and white jacks in back (labeled "Audio" and "Video"). So I suppose that it's ready and won't need an adapter after all. Thanks.

Todd > Look on the back of the TV and see if it has RCA input jacks. They would be colored yellow and white (and red, if it's a stereo TV). If so, you can connect a DVD player directly. If not, check the VCR and see if it has RCA input jacks. If the VCR has them, you can connect a DVD player to it. If neither the TV or the VCR have them, then you can get an RF adaptor to connect to the coaxial input. That's only about $10. No need to buy a new TV or VCR.

I would think you shouldn't have a problem. My TV is also 1996 vintage, and it's got the input jacks.

Todd>> I echo Greg to say that a '96 television shouldn't have any problem with a DVD player. The TV I have in my room is from about the same era as yours (I assume anyway - it was handed down to me from my grandparents and I can remember it in their house back to '96 at least) and I had a DVD player hooked up to it before I hooked my PS2 to it. You should be fine.

And, for those that never visit Toon Zone, they should be putting up a review in the next few days.

I got my television set in early 1996, so it's probably too old to have been designed for a DVD player. (I assume; I don't know that much about this sort of thing.) Which suggests that getting a DVD player could be even more complicated than I'd thought....

Maybe I should have just donated the Gargoyles DVD to the public library rather than keeping it in the vague hope of getting a DVD player....

Todd> How old is your tv? The reason I ask, is that when I bought my first dvd player, it would not work correctly on the tv I had at the time. After several frustrating minutes, I realized that I needed a RF Modulator to run the dvds. If your tv does not have any RCA input jacks (only has the cable input), then you'll need one too.

Jade "Hyder" Gregory > If I stood on a street corner wearing my costume from any Gathering since 2000 except for this last one... yeah, I'd probably be arrested, but for different reasons entirely. :P

Ryan's Comment:

"To comment on the little Gathering bit on the DVD, at the risk of making myself unpopular here, I'd just like to say, Jesus, I hope I never have to go to any of these things." - Ryan

At the risk of making himself unpopular here? *Laugh* I think he did more than just make himself unpopular, I think he made himself a target.

"Why is it none of these people seem to know anything about personal grooming?" - Ryan

Too bad we couldn't give him a personality grooming!

"You can't even go to pick up chicks because most of the girls there are borderline not-doable." - Ryan

This is just sad. You can tell he doesn't get out of the house much. Having to check out girls on the television. Really sad. Since he's so into looks why doesn't he post a picture of himself up...maybe that's why he has to check out girls on the television!

Anyway....when it comes to people like that, I just can't help but think: Demona, where are you? ;)

DVD Advertising: Someone could always dress-up in a Gargoyles costume and dance/stand with a sign promoting the DVD's release on the corner of a busy intersection. ^_^

Down side to this is it might cause a traffic accident, and then you might get arrested for domestic disturbance. But then again, it would make an interesting news story. So, any volunteers? (I'd do it but I don't have a Gargoyles costume.) ^_^

Guess that's the end of my ramble....

Hi all,

Garg voice alert! I just finished watching a new animated special "The Legend Of Frosty The Snowman". Produced by Studio B productions out of Vancouver, BC and Classic Media - It's loosely based on the original 1969 Rakin/Bass special(Frosty looks the same and magician Mr. Hinkle is also in it briefly-although not mentioned by name). Frosty is played by Bill "Broadway" Fagerbakke(using his sort of Patrick the Starfish voice). It's an hour long-so if you see it in your listings and like these kinds of Christmas specials, check it out. IT certainly beats that "Frosty Returns" thing with John Goodman voicing frosty from about 10 years ago. *Cringe*.

Patrick> Nae bother. did have a note somewhere on the English & European (continental) aspects. if I come across it again I'll post.

Ed> Excellent, it think I'll be able to stretch to that :) Had given up on ever owning it, but only occurred to me when I was reading Todd's DVD player dilemna that the first time I played one on my laptop it said I could change the region 4-5 times. I have a DVD player anyway, so changing the laptop settings isn't going to matter cos I don't really use it for that purpose. It's mostly for college work (and was a timely purchase considering how much easier it's made things on my eyesight)
Having said that, amazon have multi-region players starting at 29.99 (starlogic), and even the philips one is 49.99 - nowhere near as much as I was expecting.

I made another visit to Radio Shack today, and the DVD players are now at much lower prices with no trace of the ones costing over a thousand dollars. I'm now wondering what those things that I saw last time I was there were.

I'm probably going to have to order mine from a reputable business on the Internet, so that I can have it delivered to my apartment by professionals. I don't have a car (which isn't a hindrance for me since I live in a neighborhood where everything that I need to visit is within walking distance) and don't think it advisable to just carry the DVD player home myself, for fear of accidentally dropping it along the way. I don't want to suffer the fate of the man who decided to carry home the grandfather clock that he'd bought at an antique shop himself. (In case you never heard of him, the fellow was staggering homeunderneath the weight of the enormous clock, when he inadvertently collided with another pedestrian and dropped the clock, which broke apart upon hitting the pavement and was smashed beyond repair. The pedestrian shouted at the poor man, "Well, it's your own fault, you know! Why couldn't you just wear a wristwatch like everyone else?")

They don't have any DVD players at the local Blockbuster's, incidentally. Maybe it isn't big enough for them.

PATRICK - I wouldn't trust Wolf to do any pet-sitting, either, while we're at it.

Siren, from your earlier post you said you were confused at somesome coming on here and being a dick etc. It's usually normal, because almost 95% of the message boards i've been on, had major spammers. Since SquareGamer.com opened back in 98', they'd have 20-50 idiot spammers. Usually when they sell a dvd or word gets around, the idiots will come. Be extremely prepared because this might not be the last of them. So, it doesn't matter if the dvd sucks or is good or not, or if the website is good or bad, the spammers will come in hordes. DVD Players>Wal-Mart here has a DVD player for $30. It's compact and works great! And I bought a 5 disc DVD player at Best Buy for $60!!! Frankly, there is NO reason you should pay over $100 at the very most for a BASIC DVD player. I bought a $150 All-Region DVD player online several years ago. Anyone selling a basic DVD player, even a basic MULTI-disc player for $1000s is needing crack money. Go to Wal-Mart, Best Buy or Circuit City to get a great deal on a DVD player. Especially now, Wal-Mart has huge player sales. And avoid double deck, with DVD/VCR combo or TV/DVD combo. More often the not, one of the part breaks down and then you just paid too much for it anyways. Keep them seperated. ;)

And on Ryan's comments again about the Gathering's Geeks. First off, I am PROUD to say I am an OBSESSIVE fan of Gargoyles. Every time I go to the store, I tell at least one person they should buy it on DVD. All my friends know I love it, etc. So I'm a Gargoyle Geek? So what? At least I'm not a hypocrit. I rather be a geek and a dork anyday over that. Ryan complains about us, but then is so glad to have the DVD and even asks Greg questions, when WE are what convinced Disney to put it out. He's too arrogant to see that. Too busy in his own world. Probably a fan of Power Rangers :P

Todd>

I'm fairly certain it's "The Edge", looking at the other eps in the season...

It's when Jackel and Hyena are breaking into that party thing to steal the Coyote Diamond (If I used the wrong spelling of Coyote/Kyoti/whatever, I appologize, I'm not up on which spelling is where). I do believe this is also the episode when the Eye of Odin is donated to MOMA, and Xanatos steals it back by using the Steel Clan Exoskeleton he's made.

Looking at the list... It's not in Awakening, not in Thrill of the Hunt, not in Temptation, not in Deadly Force, not in Enter MacBeth, not in The Long Way to Morning, not in Her Brother's Keeper, and not in Reawakening. The only one left is The Edge.

And since I don't have any tapes of any of the eps, nor do I have them on here (sans Deadly Force), I had to have seen it on the Season 1 DVD set :D

I have never gotten around to putting a television in my house, so I'm getting the Gargoyles by Apple's DVD Player on my Mac.

Geekiness is something I think is an enthusiasm that is missing in the majority. I like to display my inner geek. I don't see what's wrong with that. This guy making the negative comments about the Gathering doc sounds like he's got some hurting inflicted on him due! Ha! Some people don't seem to think anything wrong with my Gargoyle fandom, although a small few have even remembered liking the show. I have told them how I became aware of the fandom and the Gathering by the Internet.

I hope I just make the registering for the Gathering before the prices go up.

Ahh... ask and ye shall receive. Cheers, Kathy!

Sheltie: £14 on Amazon.com, including P&P to the UK, but if you need facilities to play Region 1 DVDs that may cost more. I don't know what region-free DVD players cost, but if you've got a Region 2 DVD drive on a computer you can just change the settings about four times I think. If you want to be able to go back and forth between regions, I imagine there are region free hacks and that sort of thing online but personally I didn't fancy fiddling around with that in case it all went belly-up, so I downloaded a program called DVDRegionFree which cost £21. I rather suspect that in the long-term it will actually work out cheaper than continuing to buy PAL discs, if the exchange rates stay as they are.

Please feel free to copy and paste this to other websites, Live Journals, where ever.

After ten long years, Disney has released Gargoyles Season 1 to DVD. They've done a good job with it. The packaging and presentation live up to the product.

So, let's tell Disney how we feel about it!

Take ten minutes and write them a nice thank you letter. Even a postcard will do. Keep it short and sweet - this isn't the place to take them to task for sending you on a retail scavenger hunt to find the disc. Most importantly, tell them how much you look forward to the release of SEASON TWO.

Here is the address:

Buena Vista Home Entertainment
Department CS
Burbank, CA 91521
(This is the address off the disc.)

Thank you.

I wrote to Filip Vukcevic to let him know about the error he made regarding the Gathering always being in Montreal. With any luck, he'll correct his review and give us a plug.

Todd > Get yourself a nice, simple DVD player. 49 bucks nearly anywhere for the made in Korea throwaways that last a couple of years - 99 bucks for a middle of the road unit made by a company you've probably heard of. Multi-region is nice, but if your not buying import DVDs you'll never need it.

Only a couple of weeks left before the end of the year hike in registration fees. Sign up now for the Gathering of the Gargoyles and see your name on the Attending Roster (coming soon - we just love adding stuff to the website!)

Sorry for the double post, but one Hyena line in Season One that stays with me is her remark in "The Thrill of the Hunt", "Maybe a nice hair-cut would help." All that I can say is that I would certainly not advise accepting the offer of a hair-cut from Hyena - knowing her, you'd have a choice between the "General Custer Hair-cut" or the "Anne Boleyn Hair-cut".

PATRICIA - Are you sure that that episode was "The Edge"? Because Hyena never showed up in it.

Thanks for all the advice about DVD players, everyone. I'll see what I can do about buying a good inexpensive one (particularly the auxiliary switch option - because I've still got enough videocassettes that I'm not ready to part with my VCR recorder).

My DVD arrived yesterday, earlier than expected actually, only 9 days. Well I had a bit of a kerfuffle trying to get the DVD player to change region so that I could actually watch it, but I got there in the end. I will post a review on Ask Greg after I've watched the whole thing but for now I just want to say how impressed I am with the entire DVD and the effort that the good folks down at Disney went through to make this DVD so awesome! The title menus are brilliant to watch, (I thought they would be static, I wasn't expecting them to be animated. I love what I'm seeing so far. )

Awakening Part one commentary was so interesting to listen to. I get to here what Greg Weisman and Frank Paur sound like (aside from Greg's Awakening 2 line) which was a surprise. Ah I feel like not going to the work Xmas doo tonight just so I can watch the rest; that's how excited I am about this DVD! :p

Just a quick stop between essays:

Christmas> getting too close for comfort, so much to do! Anyways, going back to the 12 days thing - the 12 days of Christmas start the day after Christmas itself, ending on 6th January. There are a few folk here (mostly in the outer Isles, and older generations though) who do still celebrate on the 6th rather than the 25th Dec - but even though most celebrate on the 25th, 12th night is still quite popular in the more rural parts. (any excuse for a party!)

Ed> How much did the DVD work out to with the exchange rate? Quite low on funds at the minute but might just have to treat myself come January, what with all the extra hours I'm putting in this month! (and exams mid-month)

Happy Holidays everyone

Siren > Good point there. Anyone who's surfed the internet enough to find their way to "Ask Greg" really has no right to be calling the rest of the fans "geeks." Pot, meet kettle.

Re: DVD players > I've always heard the same thing about avoiding the combo units. You're better off sticking with a stand-alone player and just hooking it up through your existing VCR's auxillary input if you want to have both components connected to the TV at the same time.

224 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
8 days left until Christmas.

Greg: Heh, but what would be the point of non-geeky fans? Can you imagine what this place would be like:
"I liked that program."
"Yeah."
"What's it called?"
"Dunno. Oh wait, Gargoyles or something."
"Cool."
"Yeah."
"Yeah."
"So, okay. Bye."
"Yeah."

From the IGN review, regarding the Original Pitch on the DVD:

"It actually looked a good deal darker and more mature then it ended up being."

Really? I got the impression that the series would've been lighter. Of course, my thoughts while watching the pitch were colored by Greg's admission that Gargoyles originally was going to be more of a comedy. But the goofy dog look on the original Hudson design combined with the almost Hunchback-of-Notre-Dame-like Gargoyle underlings really didn't say "darker" to me. Ferocious Goliath was maybe the only indicator of any sort of darkness, and even then that only seemed like it would've been for his character in particular (the drawings DO make him look almost like something that belongs in a Spawn comic book).

Ah well, at least the series hasn't received any overwhelmingly negative reviews yet. They've all ranged from good to great.

It IS a shame that part of Season 2 couldn't be included in this first set (they could've done a "VOLUME 1" instead of a Season 1, like Futurama has), but I understand it would've been too expensive for what Disney is trying to accomplish in sales. It's just that there's so much pay-off in Season 2 once all the set-up of Season 1 is finished (not that I don't love that set-up. It's all what got me to stick with the show originally).

Watched a bunch more episodes tonight.

"Enter MacBeth" had comparably poor animation (made even more apparent once I started watching "The Edge" right after). It was still an okay episode, but I don't remember being all that intrigued by Macbeth or the prospect of his return originally. I do remember getting excited over "I want your queen" though, 'cause once Demona revealed in "Temptation" that she'd been alive for 1000 years (even though I pretty much suspected as much in "Awakening"), I was chomping at the bit to know more. So this episode was perfectly effective at whetting my appetite for "City of Stone". It currently takes "The Thrill of the Hunt"'s place as my least-favorite Season 1 ep though.

"The Edge" was good fun. Nothing all that noteworthy, but fun. My sister was making fun of Xanatos' hero-worship of Goliath (at the end there when Xanatos is all "I worried I was getting rusty, but I beat the best warrior in the world"--geez, check out the hyperbole. Goliath's awesome, but the best in the world?), saying there was a homoerotic slant to it. Heh, I can get behind that bit of slashy fan-wanking, Xanatos DID design the Steel Clan based on Goliath's build and appearance. That reminds me, during "Enter Macbeth" I was thinking about how much it sucked for the clan to be made up as it was. I mean, not that it didn't already suck horribly to lose most of your family, but to top it all off Goliath is the only one of the Manhattan clan who's in his prime. The Trio, while strong (especially Broadway), are still physically less efficient, and Hundson's getting up there...Don't get me wrong, I love all the characters, but Goliath's team's really not as well-equipped as it could've been if some of those other Wyvern gargoyles had survived in place of the rest.

"The Long Way to Morning". Still liking this ep a lot, but this is probably the first time that I didn't love an ep as much as when I was younger. One of those instances where it hurt to know the plot inside and out, 'cause I was kinda bored at times. Just doesn't entertain as much upon repeated viewing. Some nice nods to the future in those flashback scenes--reasons for Princess Katherine's racism, Archmage (how DOES he survive again? Wait, don't tell me, I'll find out eventually), plus bitchy Demona getting all assuming that she knows best--something that got her clan killed.

I don't agree with Hudson's point about age and patience though. It was a nice line, I really appreciated it when I was younger. "I know how to wait", just Ed Asner's smug delivery, it's perfect. But it doesn't always hold true in real life. And it came off as sorta ridiculous, 'cause technically Demona is about ten times Hudson's age. So his point is kinda lost, unless he's saying that you need to physically age to learn patience? Nah, beyond puberty it's mostly all about your mental maturity. So that kinda fell flat, which is especially unfortunate since it was one of my favorite moments of the entire series when I originally watched. Heh, I wish I could just shut my brain off a bit so I could stop being so critical.

"Her Brother's Keeper". I love Fox. I dunno what else to say about this ep. It's a pretty good one. Goliath's line to Elisa and Derek when they're fighting, the one that basically amounts to, "At least you HAVE family" ? Ouch, poor Goliath and clan.

What's the time frame for the entire series? How long does the present-day stuff take? It feels like all of Season 1 takes place in the early fall to maybe the beginning or middle of winter. Is it ever said in the show how much time has passed at any point during Season 2 or 3 ?

Proof that Gargoyles stays with you...

An obscure line in "The Edge", said by Hyena, has made it into my vocabulary... I 'came up' with it a few months ago (those of you that have me on LiveJournal can read that there.. it links to the post I used it in. heh.). Anyways, I was trying to categorize guys around here.. and came up with the phrase. No one got why I used it, and it was too hard for me to explain.

When I watched the episodes on Sunday or whatever, I heard that phrase and broke out laughing.... because I realized that it was used there exactly how I was attempting to use it, but not able to describe it.

And just a few mins ago I came to the realization that it must have stuck with me from the first 1 or 2 times I saw that ep... back in 98 or 99 area, when it was on Toon Disney and I had Toon Disney.. back when I was here the first time. heh.

That phrase that stuck with me for years?

Pompous twit.

Ryan's rant: I speak for everyone when I ...*rolls eyes*...So if the fandom is SOOOOO "dorky" why is he even here asking Greg questions and posting several comments and questions on Ask Greg? Hypocrit, frankly. And frankly, too negative IMO. He wants the Season 2 to come out, but he's so busy complaining about the REAL fans, he doesn't see that WE are a big reason why it's on DVD in the first place. It's the GATHERINGS and OBESSIVE WEB PAGES that got Disney to stand up and notice. Ungrateful twit.

And "Luke Perry"'s rant on Buffy. Talk about useless. First off, the guy wouldn't know a good show if it came up and bit him in the arse. I'm not saying Buffy is the best tv show ever made, but obviously, he's so one-sided about it, he could careless to see the true genius of it. Using monsters as metaphors to teenage life. Probably just put off by a strong woman figure. We had the discussion several months ago about all the qualities that Buffy and Gargoyles has in common, only natural that most fans of Gargoyles are often fans of Buffy, if they give it the chance, and of course, vice versa. I am giving Gargoyles DVD to my nextdoor neighbors. Twin teen girls and they are always borrowing my Buffy DVDs. I figured I'd introduce them formally to Gargoyles.

And to finish...I came to the conclussion long ago, most people are just ignorant and arrogrant and too egotistical to see it.

I want to pick at least 4 more copies up but no luck with job hunting. As i said earlier hopefully the review of the game will give it some publicity. IGN - The writer made one huge mistake - <This is a fun little 15-minute documentary on a Gargoyles-themed convention (ala Star Trek) that is held in Montreal each year.> It's not held in the same location each year. I guess that point isn't made clear in the DVD.

Vertigo1 - I have a dvd-rom on my pc and that's my only means on watching dvds. Right now, I'm looking at dvd/vcr combo just vcr tapes aren't quite the way of cassette tapes YET. Can you recommend a good combo? Because it's either that or I have to install a switch to go between using a vcr and a dvd player.

Actually, I recommend you stay clear of DVD/VCR combos. They tend to be very cheaply made, and when one side dies you've got yourself an expensive doorstop. You're much better off with a seperate unit entirely. Right now I can get a DVD player that will not only play DVD movies, but it will play mp3s, pictures (slideshow or one at a time), VCD's, SVCD's, and mpeg movies for under $40 at the local Sams Club. (I'm just a few hours away from you Todd down in the western part of TN so there should be one in your area.)

My only regret is that we'll be posting our reviews of the Season 2 DVD set long before Greg gets around to posting a reply to Ryan's little assesment of the fandom. What a jerk. I peg his mental age somewhere around 13 or 14 based on the way he judges women.

IGN Review, not bad but not great. Though how he could think Xanatos and Demona are not intriguing villains is beyond me. Though like he says, we really get into them in season 2. He still really seemed to like the show, and gave it a good review.

His comments on the geekiness of the Gathering... not sure if I should feel insulted or not. Well, it was a million times more respectful than the post recently made in ASK GREG by this degenerate named Ryan, going on about how geeky we all are, and how "undoable" most of the girls were. That was just disgusting, and a good thing for him that he has no plans ever to attend a Gathering, because I'd beat the crap out of him.

Aw well, aside from that, this is good news, IGN is a huge site with a lot of readers, so hopefully it will help out with sales.

Sometimes they even combine the surround sound reciever into the DVD player so you might think you're just getting the player by itself but you're getting it with surround sound decoders and speakers.
If you don't have a local Best Buy you should be able to find them just as cheap at Wal*Mart or Target... or you can order one on-line. Thanks for the information, everyone! I honestly had no idea that DVD players were so inexpensive. It makes me wonder about the ones that they were selling at Radio Shack now.

I'll have to look again at Blockbuster (I don't remember seeing any there last time), as well as in other appropriate stores in my neighborhood. (Preferably, it should be a combined VCR and DVD player, so that I can still use my videotapes.)

A thousand dollars???????? That's just insane. For that amount of money when ever I watch a DVD, like for example the "Gargoyles" DVD, Demona had better step out of my TV screen and perform a strip tease.

Seriously, they are very affordable now. Supermarkets are selling good, cheap DVD players. Blockbuster sells them too, I know my local one does. Or get a family member or friend to pick one up for you somewhere as an X-Mas gift or you can just slip them the cash to do it.

Knowing what a big "Buffy" fan Greg Weisman is (this very week, he just posted his thoughts on the cast of the Buffyverse from the standpoint of halfway through Season Four of "Buffy" and Season One of "Angel"), I'm certain that he'd be volunteering for the writing staff of the projected animated series. (And, although I've said this before, I have a very strong suspicion that if Greg did any writing for it, it would include living gargoyles showing up in Sunnydale - you've got to admit, they'd be right at home in a town that's already hosting vampires, werewolves, demons, and all other manner of bizarre critters.)

Emru's interview with Greg was so interesting and thorough that I copy/pasted it to a Word file and saved it. Might be handy to hand out if I manage to hook any new Gargoyles fans with the DVDs (after they see the Second Season some day though), and I'm sure my sister'll wanna read it eventually since she's a fan. Man, Gargoyles is gonna be an even harder sell than Firefly. Luckily I have open-minded friends, but some of them aren't the most patient.

For what it's worth, I think Greg Weisman should try to get onto the Buffy Animated writing crew again, if he isn't already doing this. The project is moving forward again, it's chances have been looking really good since the summer.

Speaking of Joss Whedon shows, it just occurred to me that Gargoyles has the whole happens-mostly-at-night feature in common with Angel.

After more revisiting-the-series-a-decade-later viewing...

"Temptation" is still one of my favorite early episodes. From what I remembered of it, I was worried that I would see it again and come down hard on Brooklyn for being so blind. But his confusion, hesitation, and naivete were believable. Maybe I'll be proven wrong upon re-watching the rest of the series, but I recall that any episode featuring Demona was always a great one.

As with "The Thrill of the Hunt", I enjoyed "Deadly Force" a hell of a lot more than I did when it originally aired. I dunno, maybe my 12-year-old self just didn't realize that this was a quality ep. I know I wasn't a fan of the mob aspect of Gargoyles, so I wasn't going into "Deadly Force" with any high expectations. It was great though. The emotions were real. Broadway killed in this.

After the "Awakening" arc, the three episodes after that seem to concentrate on each of the Trio. I think Lexington was the least fleshed out, but that's okay since "The Thrill of the Hunt" is still my least-favorite Season 1 ep. And he's quickly growing on me more than he did in the original airings. I may've had a bias toward him 'cause I figured he was the Donatello wannabe, but he's really not and Thom Adcox's delivery has really won me over (and yeah, I've read Greg's comments about making sure the Trio didn't come off as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...but they did sometimes, at least to the 12-year-old version of me. They don't so much anymore).

So is everyone still doing what they can to promote the DVDs? I believe Greg said we needed to see strong sales throughout the next month or two, right? My second copy arrived from Amazon.com the other day along with the latest two DVD sets of Sex & The City (that series is completed at the end of the month with the release of Season 6 Part 2). Soon as I can get over to the library tomorrow, I'll donate Gargoyles and an extra set of Firefly I won way back when (if anyone here hasn't seen Firefly but is a Joss Whedon fan or a fan of sci-fi in general...heck even if you're not big on sci-fi, since Firefly is more of an ensemble drama than anything else, try to watch it. Rent it, buy it, maybe even find it at your local library, borrow it off me as a last resort. Just watch it. 'Cause the big screen movie's gonna be awesome).

My DVDs came today. Absolutely awesome. The commentaries are fantastic, the features are lovely, the video quality is gorgeous, the screens are delightful. So thrilling. I'll have further comments at a later date, but for now suffice it to say that it's an excellent collection. But I guess by now most people here will have reached that conclusion already. ;)

Is there a sensible place to direct letters of thanks? I mean, partly because I think the people responsible for putting this set together deserve huge thanks, but also I can't imagine it would hurt for the Disney people to know that the effort (and money -- all those commentaries) is really appreciated and was worth pursuing.

Anyway, off to register at DisneyDVD...

CHAPTER IN TV SERIES>> On the DVDs for the series Soap, every commercial break marks the beginning of a new chapter. It is a mild irritation that the Gargoyles DVD doesn't even do this, but if your DVD let's you jump to a specific point in time in a feature, it doesn't seem to be that bad.

Incase people haven't noticed, DVD isn't a fad. It's not BETA and it's not Laserdisc. It's here to stay :) Go get one... they're SO cheap now.

Right now Best Buy has a basic DVD player on sale for $49 or you could get a DVD/VCR combo for $99. I don't believe you own a PS2 or XBOX, but if you do, drop $29 on the remote! And for your computer you can get THE fastest DVD burner for $61 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-031&depa=0) or just a plain DVD drive which will probably run you around $25 (http://www.newegg.com/app/searchProductResult.asp?Submit=go&Range=1&DEPA=&bop=and&description=DVD&InnerCata=55)

But in light of the glowing reviews of the DVD, I'm honestly going to have to find some way of buying a DVD player soon so that I can finally watch it.

***Occasional poster, long time lurker***

Gargoyles DVD: ***Warning, contains some spoilers for those of you who have not been able to see the bonus feature yet*** Well I must say that I am absolutely amazed at its quality! I figured the DVD would be better than my old VHS copies, but its quality far exceeded my expectations! The picture was absolutely crystal clear. When I paused it to skim through shot by shot (so I could watch character expressions or look for animation mistakes) I was surprised to see that each shot was just as clear as the next. The sound was equally, if not more, impressive. Never before did I hear the rustle of clothes and the faint sound of wind in the background. The voices were also crystal clear, a lot easier to make out what they were saying. This, I believe, is most notable in Awakenings Part I, where the gargoyles fend off the Vikings and the humans (thinking they did it all by themselves) say things like "Who needs the gargoyles?" and other such rude comments. I don't know why, but until I was able to listen to the DVD, I was never quite sure what exactly was said during that time. On TV and the VHS copies that part always sounded muffled to me, but not in the DVD. The Gathering of the Gargoyles bonus feature was absolutely fun to watch and exciting. Hopefully I'll be able to attend the Las Vegas Gathering, which would be my first if I am able to go. As for the original show pitch by Mr. Greg Weisman, I found it amazing and funny. Amazing, because it was interesting to see how the character designs changed so much from those presented in the show pitch to the finale character designs. To bad they didn't add another bonus feature showing off the various character designs, I think it's always fun to look at the various different character concepts before they select a final character design. Funny, because of the various sketches that were used during the show pitch. For example, and my most favorite one, comes at then end when Mr. Weisman says something like "Gargoyles coming to the Disney family in 1994." Then it shows a picture of a little kid with a Mickey Mouse Ears Hat (Is that what they call it?) on with a look of complete terror across his face as he gazes up to the gargoyle that cast it's shadow over him. I just love that picture; I find it so funny for some reason. Then the audio commentary on the Awaking episodes was fun and insightful to listen too. It was mentioned in the audio commentary that Hudson got his sword by taking it from a Viking in Awaking Part II, I never caught that part before. It also mentioned how one of the commandoes' guns (when Elisa and Goliath were attacked in the park) grew in size between Awaking Part IV and Part V; once again I never caught that. In a nutshell, the DVD was marvelous, couldn't have hoped for better, but chapter breaks would have been nice. My remote control is very touchy and by just brushing up against it can make it skip a chapter, turn off the DVD player, fast forward, rewind, etc. and that happened quiet a few times why watching the Gargoyles DVD. Now I know I could solve the problem by putting the remote down after hitting play and not keeping it in my hands, but I can't do that, I must be Master of the Remote---something I inherited from my dad. *LOL*

Christmas: I can't believe how close it is, still so much shopping to do! How about the rest of you?

T minus days to Christmas:....Just kidding Patrick, I wouldn't still your count. If it's not funny then I apologize, just "lurker humor" I guess. ^_^

I don't have any other DVDs of televisions series, so I have nothing to make comparison to regarding "chapter breaks." I rarely if ever make use of the scene breaks on movie DVDs, unless it's something REALLY long, like LOTR, and I don't have time to watch it all in one sitting.

Today is a day of two perfect squares.

15 x 15 = 225 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
3 x 3 = 9 days left until Christmas.

And then there's my math geekiness... which I suppose makes me a perfect square, too. ;)

Todd: Chapter breaks are like bookmarks. Instead of fast forwarding to a place, you can just jump to a chapter break. A perfect place to put them is at the commerical segment fade outs. If you watch movie DVDs, they have tons of chapter breaks so you can just go directly to your favorite scene of the movie you wanted to.

Todd,

Chapter breaks would be extra track numbers (do you have a CD player?) within the episodes. So that, say, you might be able to skip to each commercial break by pressing the 'next' button on the DVD player.

As it is, the only chapter breaks are for each episode, whereas I'd expect each episode to be broken up into the commercial breaks.

Unexpectedly, a week has gone by between my first post in the CR and this post. I caught "Deadly Force" on my DVD. Well, the weather was rough, and the wind and rain made everything difficult in the past week.

I finally made free time for either my DVD or the CR. I chose the "Awakening" episode first, and then stopped by here. The episodes on DVD are something I'm eventually to get used to. They are as sharp as something from ten year old video with some digital enhancement can look, and I'm impressed. They were using some master, I can tell because I see commercial fades cleaner than the Toon Disney copy, and scenes from Deadly Force restored pre-cutting. The sound occasionally had some artifacts which I can't tell came from either the master or the transfer to DVD, but it's above the sound quality of the Toon Disney copy.

Does Amazon need more reviews? I'm wondering if drafting, re-drafting, and editing a serious DVD review is needed. Oh, and this is the last thing. The delivery from Amazon was delightful because most days last week would have been the worst to go chain shopping in that weather.

Was watching from "The Edge" on last night and just wanted to share a bit.

It's great watching these episodes again because I'm picking up a lot more now than I ever did before. When Elisa is telling Bluestone about how there's a conspiracy to ruin her day and Matt says he believes her (well before we get the Illuminati info from Matt) just cracked me.

Then you've got Elisa telling Matt how she doesn't care about UFOs or Loch Ness and such and she's going to run into each one of those within the next year.

I really love that we've got these episodes on DVD. Going frame-by-frame through some of the action sequences reveals some great gems of just absurd character expression. But it also let me pick up on something I'd missed before. Again, in "The Edge" you've got a shot of X in his gargoyle armor with a couple of steel clan bots flying through the air. They fly past camera, and as we get the oppposite angle of them flying away, you start in on an extreme closeup of a circuit board and in the next frame you see the head of X's gargoyle armor (but you don't KNOW it's X yet) and you see either a reflection or you're seeing through the eye lens or eye cover or whatever and you see a small area of circuit board, then in the third frame you don't see it anymore.

On TV and the VHS tapes I never picked up on that. On the DVD not only did I notice it, but was able to go back and really inspect what I had saw.

I've yet to see any sort of blurry in-between framse on the DVD, meaning the guys who did the digital transfer did a great job. Very cool.

One thing in general worth pointing out again is just how incredibly cool the continuity is. You end "Her Brother's Keeper" with it starting to snow and you get this great shot of the clan in stone sleep and covered in snow up on the clock tower. Then you go right into "Reawakening" and it's still snowing! Just like with Elisa being on crutches after "Deadly Force". The continuity is just friggen incredible.

Speaking of "Reawakening" ... the Washington Bridge CLOSED? C'mon.

I've heard from a couple co-workers who said their kids really enjoy Gargoyles and that they're getting a kick out of the show as well. Very good stuff all around.

CIA Student> Shakespeare wasn't dealing with copyright laws. Ad there's a vast difference between "building on old tales and myths" and "using a copyrighted story as the basis for your own work". The second is fanfiction, and it can be hugely creative...but if you try and make money from it, that ain't kosher. And it can have a negative impact on the fandom; if enough people were to try and skirt copyright laws and fair use standards, then Disney might get shirt (as Disney is wont to do) and decide to start cracking down on other forms of fan expression.

Vanguard, the whole Gargoyles universe is technically the property of Disney, including the series concepts, the idea of winged creatures that live in clans, protect by night and turn to stone by day. You cannot use them in any sort of creative work that you hope to make a profit from, period. And you aren; going to be able to do anything like the Marvel books unless you are specifically commissioned by the owners of the material to do so - and from what i hear, it's pretty much a "don't call us, we'll call you" deal on that front, especially with Disney.

Just write for fun. Do something original if you want your name out there. If you're creative enough to write good fanfic, then you're probably halfway to the point of being able to write decent original stuff already.

Hey everyone! Miss me? You did? Awwwww!!!
Okay, enough with that....

Since my computer has decided to be evil for an unknown amount of time, I thought I'd post up my DVD adventure...
Which was me, at home, trying desperately to get my computer working (it took me all tuesday), as there aren't any 24 hour stores of any kind in my area. Eventually, I was able to order my two copies (at 5 o'clock wednesday morning)! Luckily I was able to sleep in that day.

Sadly, I'm still waiting for my DVD to come in. I never thought it'd be so nervewracking to hear all these great things about the bit on the Gathering, and NOT be able to see it (although from the descriptions, I remember most of you). I still don't know if it's a good thing on whether I'm on the DVD or not. I'm so confused!!! :S

And on a side note, Battle Beast, you were at this years Gathering, right? (I can't really remember) And if you were, and at the banquet, do you remember who was at your table? 'Cuz I swear I remember you sitting at mine (then again, my memory isn't what it used to be... and I'm only 18!!! yikes!).

That's all for now!

These novels they would consider to be tie-in into original Garoyle series all though it would have new characters including a hopefully a new Clan, there are on the market those types of novels the Marvel novels are like that.

One more thing the Gargoyle Beast Riel is an official saction Gargoyle?, because I want to use him in my new Clan that I'm creating.

Vanguard > If that's true, then you need to write original works. "Gargoyles" novels would not be original work, they'd be works based off an existing idea that was conceived by someone else. Being an "official published author and creator" by definition means coming up with ideas, plots, and characters from scratch.

I wonder what Obie (my tortoiseshell kitten) will make of the DVD, when I finally watch it.

My old grey cat Merlin (who passed on in September) usually ignored "Gargoyles", but once when I was watching "Deadly Force", he sat up and looked about when Cagney meowed.

WeeeE! finally got my Garg DVDs(5 copies) from Amazon today. So far checked out all the menus(very cool), The gathering documentery-Great for several reasons. Those they interviewed all sounded very informed, well read - and of course loved the show. Of course, I get a better look at what everyone looks like on TV and in photos than I do by being there(one of the downsides of being legally blind i guess). Love how they intermixed the animation and the interviews. It showed we have a lot of very talented-albeit obcessed people in the fandom. And of course, I was only faintly visable in a couple of shots(all your TVs safe from my ugly mug). The one downside-with all that they shot-It could have been a lot longer!(but what else would you expect a garg fan to say, hmm?^_^).

As for the shows, I've only seen "Deadly Force"-glad they left it unedited. Great sound & nice clean non grainy color. We gotta have season 2 guys-we just gotta!

God I missed this show sooo much! *hugs DVD box* I need to let it sink in for a bit that this is actually reality. Gargs on DVD! what a concept! Woooooooo!

Spam is evil... narf

So, I haven't read Ask Greg in a very very long time. I am wondering what is the best way to catch up on it. I know there is a FAQ. If I read through the FAQ, will I catch everything important, or should I just work my way through the archives? Or should I read both? I have a 5 hour work shift on Saturday with nothing to do, so I will be playing catch-up :)

The IP address appears to belong to Trillion Digital Communications which seems to be some kind of broadband supplier that works off of BellSouth's network.

I'd love to know if this was automated or if this is some cut and paste job that someone did on purpose. There are several spam bots out there that go after popular blog software such as MovableType but s8 is unique, so I'd have to guess it was by hand.

If we see more of this I may have to take action. For now I'll just deny the C block of IPs that this came from.

If Patty Duke had been cast as Janeway, then I would have stopped following the "Trek" franchise a whole series earlier than I did.

Vanguard > I'm sure you've got some great ideas, but you're going to be in a for a lot of disappointment trying to get Disney to sanction anything. If anyone ever gets the nod to write official novels, most of us fans would most likely prefer it to be Greg Weisman. That's not to say, though, that a lot of us wouldn't like to see your ideas, as well. That's why we read fanfic. :)

Anyone else remember a certain 1980s T.V. sitcom that starred Marla Gibbs and Jackee Harry? I happened to think about it today when I noticed that there are...

Todd>>The DVD only shows the part where Greg is manually moving the pictures, including the one of Bronx and the fire hydrant (that segment is about 4 minutes long). BTW, we thought that the original picture of Hudson makes him look more doglike because of the floppy ears and the expression on his face.

Vanguard>Like I said before it would be really realy hard to do that. I wish it could be done though :( It took us 4 years to get the rights to make this online gargoyles comic book website. We still are not alloud to print things if they are going to be used for profit: which means we can't really print out any of the books we make but we can display them online as a fan base website. We where lucky enough that disney let us make the site because they thought it would be good publicity for them go figure.

It would be really neat if you could succeed in making the books. You might check into asking disney about it I don't know. Most of your top notch comic book companys wont touch a disney character unless they have rights to them or are in a deal with disney or something.

To those of you who've watched the Gargoyles DVD - I still haven't - and Greg's original pitch, does that (the original pitch) include the selection of animation clips that he showed at the Gathering 2001 (and probably at other Gatherings as well, though that one was the only one that I attended) that interspersed them with the title "Gargoyles" moving slowly past? Or just the part of the pitch where Greg was showing one picture after another manually?

(The funniest part of that, I recall, was the picture of Bronx chewing on a fire hydrant. Which, at least, was much more sanitary than what I was afraid Bronx might do to fire hydrants.)

A note vaguely related to "Gargoyles." We watched the movie "Elf" this weekend, which has Ed Asner as Santa Claus. Toward the end of the movie he has a line very similar to Hudson's "I'm getting too old for this" in "Awakening." The kids got a kick out of it.

heh.

I've finished watching the entire set... now I'm waiting for season 2.... *waits* I don't really have a prefrence for it's packaging or whatever, but some of the series that have the huge box sets (FOX series, mainly) range anywhere from $40-100. If they do packaging like they are for The Lion King movie set, then that'd work for me. The group of DVDs inside a container box. Or separately. It might take them longer to put the second season out (because of figuring out how to do the discs, etc). I'd buy them either way. Season 1 was a great intro to the series... it introduced everything (or just about). Now I just wait patiently for season 2.

and I believe that's all from me...

Gorebash> Indeed, Amazom.com ships international, and with reasonable prices (if you don't use the extremely expensive, quickest way). As for the DVD... Breaking season 2 up for DVD release:
With a little fudging here and there, probably 4 volumes at 13 episodes each, much like we had with season 1. It keeps cost of individual volumes down so parents/fans don't feel a heavy $80 price tag at one shot (like buying ST:TNG sets... ouch!)

International Fans who want the DVD:
UK release is probably not going to happen unless this gets really really popular. Your best bet is to look into region-free DVD players. If you have a computer with a DVD drive in it, looking for region-free hacks for your model DVD drive could help.

I have an Apex 703 3-disc DVD player I picked up a few years back. It's region-free and can play both PAL and NTSC on an NTSC TV. Apex 600's (single disc) were also really popular. But these are old models now. Maybe you can find one on eBay? There are more recent region-free DVD players out there, just hit the net and search around. *cough* http://froogle.google.com *cough*

As for buying the DVD itself, Europeans should be able to buy through amazon.com and have them ship international. Earlier this year I bought the box set for "Mysterious Cities of Gold" (only in french w/no English subs... DOH!) through amazon.fr and had it shipped international to me. So I have to assume it works in reverse.

Good Luck!

10 bottles of beer on the wall...

On a random note, I really like the use of blank white eyes when the Gargoyles became angry or aggressive. It looks sharp and actually serves as useful "body language". The only other cartoon I've watched that does this is the new Ninja Turtles, and although it's cool looking, it's less effective in that series.

Speaking of Turtles - how's it going, TigerShard? I assume you're the same poster from the Technodrome forums before they went down (multiple times)...
