I have all the Marvel Gargoyles comics and I must say, out of Greg's hands into Marvel was not a bad transition. Some were better then others and I am sure having Greg or Michael on writing would have made them better, but they weren't bad. So a comic, so long as it stays true to the series (or perhaps is allowed to be a bit darker), may not be too bad and give Gargoyles a much needed boost. Perhaps this is Disney testing the waters more for a restart for the series and/or the live action movie :D

Wishful thinking...

well, if its true, the best thing is that Greg is writing it, thats amazingly good. i'd worry if Gargoyles was in the hands of those who don't get it, ie Goliath Chronicles... no one gets Gargoyles more than Greg...

Yeah, Disney teaming up with Slave Labor Graphics is...really weird, if true. I've been sporadically buying their comics for a while now (usually humor titles--like Oni Press, you can usually depend on Slave Labor for funny books), and while they DO have all-ages titles, they mostly seem to cater to a teen and adult audience.

I don't wanna get my hopes up, but Johnen Vasquez made the jump to television (Invader Zim...his comics were Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee, I Feel Sick, and a few other one-shots). If Gargoyle comics, along with the DVDs and fan efforts, can help ignite a lot more interest in the series...maybe a revival is possible.

And Slave Labor is sorta perfect for Gargoyles in a way. Since they have some darker books (although a couple of them are annoying in their whiney-gothyness), Gargoyles might sorta fit.

Just to clarifym I don' think this deal is a bad thing at all; it just surprises me that these particular two caompanies got together. I can't really think why Disney would contact Slave Labor to do some licensed comics for them, or vice versa.

Click my name to get to the link. This site is pretty reputable, so I have no reason not to believe it. Slave Labor is something of an underground publisher, so if you don't get out of Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse much, you may not know of them. But as indy publisher, they're pretty well known. Amopng their bigger books are Evan Dorkin's "Milk and Cheese", "Jonny the Homicidal Maniac", and my friend Les McClaine's book "Highway 13". How (or why) they ended up with this deal is beyond me. But if it's true (and if it isn't, someone's really going out of their way for a prank), I think we may see the books getting more attention from the publisher than they would at one of the bigger publishers.

Before anyone gets excited, let's wait and hear from Greg. I just sent him an e-mail telling him about Ed's post, so hopefully we'll get some clarification.

I did do some checking and Slave Labor is a real comic book company, however, I'm a big comic book geek, and up till now I never heard of them.

Till we hear otherwise, take it with a grain or a pillar of salt.

Ed, out of curiosity, what forum did you find this info in?

Hi guys. A friend of mine posted this for my attention at another forum I frequent. Has anyone got any more information about it?

"From The Beat - "Slave Labor has signed a licensing deal with...WALT DISNEY. Slave Labor will put out four comics titles: HAUNTED MANSION, an anthology based on the ride; GARGOYLES, based on the cartoon, and written by creator Greg Weisman; WONDERLAND, a spin-off of the animated film ALICE IN WONDERLAND but minus Alice; and TRON. Yes, Tron. The book will bridge the gap between the cult movie and the cult video game. More details to come."

Thought Ed would be interested..."

I'm working on a storyline for a continuation of the Gargoyles episodes. I have enough written for one episode. Once it and the additional ideas are polished, I will be submitting it to Disney in hopes of reviving Gargoyles. I believe the chances of success are stronger if the submission includes a petition from Gargoyles fans, to show Disney just how popular the show really is. But I have no idea how to send a petition around the internet. Help would be appreciated.

kjay> I always felt that the start of the ELisa/Goliath romance was when Goliath scooped up Elisa after she commented on how she was going to get around when they had the wings. The smile on their (Goliath and Elisa's) faces followed by the awareness of Hudson's presence made it fairly obvious.

SIREN-"Goliath saves Elisa. Why not the other Gargoyle?"
The obvious reason why Goliath went for Elisa and not Demona was because Demona had a better chance of surviving the fall than Elisa ever did (Demona had wings and Elisa didn't). The subconscious reason was that to Goliath Demona
was already dead to him when she betrayed him and showed her true colors. Elisa was the first person in this whole ordeal that didn't fear or betray him (I think Goliath was starting to have feelings for Elisa already) and she saved his life (twice). But Goliath hoped he could still save Demona (and his love for her) when he went back to see if she was still visable. Then Goliath immeditely went after
xanatos to vent out his revenge and pain, until Elisa mentioned Demona. He didn't want to be like her because then he would become "lost" too.

KYTHERA - I suspect that the writers were thinking, when they portrayed Hakon as illiterate, (if they were thinking about medieval culture at all) more about a general medieval (rather than Viking-specific) attitude among the warrior-class that being able to read and write was strictly for the priests and monks, and that a proper warrior shouldn't be wasting his time with marks on a page, but with swinging a big sword instead.

(At least they got the Vikings' costume right, though I've mentioned that enough times here before that I shan't say anything more about it.)

Just a note regarding Hakon and his line about not knowing how to read...

Having learned a little more about the Vikings since the show aired, that line irks me. I think it's highly unlikely that Hakon was entirely unable to read, given that the Vikings had an alphabet of runes, and thousands of runestones and other runic inscriptions have been found from all over the places visited by Vikings. While the Vikings didn't record their history or poetry (yet), they still had writing and an alphabet, so I find it very hard to swallow that Hakon was 100% illiterate, other than as a plot device.

I think it's much more likely that, while able to read and understand runic inscriptions in his native language (especially since he's obviously a higher ranking warrior, if not nobility), it is writings in English (or more probably Latin for the Grimorum) that he can't read.

Of course, Hakon is no great scholar, so I imagine he views the Grimorum with contempt and sorcery as pointless frippery, and that he is glad he can't read *it,* as opposed to not being able to read at all; if it can't make him stronger or help him raid and plunder more successfully, Hakon probably figures it's not worth more than he can sell it for (another thing that bothers me... the Vikings were also successful and far-traveled traders, and had no qualms about stealing books and selling them back to people willing to pay hefty prices for finely-crafted, decorated and bound manuscripts. With no printing presses, books were valuable for their content and as works of art in and of themselves).

Just some extra food for thought. ^_^

I watched "Awakening II" yesterday, as well, and I noticed two things.

1) When Katharyn tells the Magus "you tyurned 'em to stone... forever?" He replies, "The terms of the spell were that the Gargoyles would sleep... untill the castle rises above the clouds." The princess must have been thinking, "Didn't I just say that?" Who ever wrote the Grimourum was thinking in a 10th century mind, so what he wrote he thought would literally be "forever."

2) When the Gargoyles awaen, they must have been *really* stiff. I mena, I wake up from a 8 hour nap and sometimes I'm stiff as a board. I'd hate to fell what they felt. :P

that is all I will say.

SIREN - Actually, I was talking about Demona's apparent death in the Wyvern Massacre in Part One, not her falling off the Eyrie Building in Part Five. (I haven't even gotten to Part Five this summer yet.)

I knew Demona would be back. In the short time I saw her for the last ep of Awakenings, she seemed to vital to the story to let die. She fell, rocks were hitting her, but it didn't appear to hit her head, so I thought at some point she had to fly away (I had yet to know they glided and didn't fly). And I also couldn't see how a dead gargoyle could be sprawled out in the middle of the New York street ;) So I figured right away, she flew away when she was out of sight from Goliath.

But just coming onto that part was heavily interesting and had my hooked. Elisa, a human, tackles Demona, they fall. Goliath saves Elisa. Why not the other gargoyle? So I wondered what happened. And then when he grabbed Xanatos and Elisa mentioned Demona. How it all ended with them turning to stone....I felt a combination of WTF?? and (Incredibles tricyle boy) THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME!!
So I was certainly ready the next day to see what happened and got the recap of Awakenings, so I caught up a little. Then the VHS was released, but I didn't know scenes were cut still they reaired Awakenings months later. So yeah, I was all jumbled up. :P

SIREN - One other Demona/Mystique similarity that I can think of is that both have offspring among the protagonists: Angela for Demona, Nightcrawler and Rogue for Mystique.

Watched "Awakening Part Two" on the DVD today. One bit that stands out to me in the first act is how Hakon, while burning the counter-spell from the Grimorum, comments sneeringly about how this talk about the Magus's spell book makes him glad that he can't read. It feels almost like a thematic foreshadowing of "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" - especially when you consider the consequences of the act that Hakon's boasting about his illiteracy accompanies.

There's a nice little animation bit in the scene at the cliff; when Goliath's staring down into the darkness in which Hakon and the Captain plummeted, he inadvertently dislodges a small stone from the cliff's edge, which falls into the chasm after them.

Another of my favorite bits in Act One of this episode is when we see the gargoyles launching themselves from the castle walls, one by one, to go after the Vikings, and then see Bronx charging out through the gates to accompany them.

I wonder how many first-time viewers expected to see anything more of the eggs. I'd assumed, all the way up to "Avalon Part One", that Xanatos was telling the truth about them all being gone, simply because I didn't think it likely that gargoyles lived naturally for a thousand years. (Which meant that I didn't reconsider what Xanatos said about the eggs even after I found out that he was the antagonist.)

I've mentioned this before, but one bit about this episode that amuses me is that, immediately after Xanatos's famous line "Pay a man enough, and he'll walk barefoot into Hell", we get a close-up of one of Xanatos's workmen walking along, with the focus being on his feet (although they're not barefoot).

In light of another famous line in this episode, the "Nice mask" line voiced by Greg Weisman himself, I found myself suddenly wondering this time around: did Xanatos's commandos, during the staged attack on the castle here, know what the gargoyles actually were or did they believe that they were just people in costumes? (Of course, maybe the guy said "Nice mask" to make the gargoyles think that the commandos thought that they were people in costumes.) I have to admit, they seemed to be taking their first fight with living gargoyles as if it was a very natural thing. Those guys really must be professionals. :)

Another of my favorite parts about this episode is the gargoyles seeing the modern world for the first time and feeling bewildered about it. Through their eyes, New York appears an almost alien place rather than an everyday city. And I still enjoy such bits as the gargoyles' conviction from the commandos' modern-day weaponry that they're sorcerers, and Hudson's belief that their helicopter was a dragon.

I also get a kick out of seeing Bronx chasing his opponents (whether Vikings or commandos) around, barking furiously at them. Kind of a pity that we never got to see him coming back from one of those chases triumphantly bearing a piece of trouser-cloth in his mouth.

One thing that I *didn't* pick up on, until Greg pointed it out, was that Goliath's request to the Magus to be turned to stone with the other gargoyles was an act of suicide. Since the series was just starting, I'd suspected that the gargoyles were going to be re-awakened in the 20th century and saw Goliath's request as just part of the set-up for that. But when I decided to look over the situation through Goliath's eyes, forgetting about anything which he couldn't have known, I realized that it was indeed suicide as opposed to just "I want to be with them when they awaken". Because he didn't know that someday the castle could rise above the clouds; to him that would have seemed impossible. (And, like Greg, I believe that we should all give thanks that his boss persuaded the writers to change it from the Magus offering to cast the spell on Goliath to Goliath asking the Magus to cast the spell on him.)

I could say more, but that's it for now.

Todd -- Interestingly enough, Goliath himself knows he's being excessively strict to the trio and Bronx when he sends them to the rookery; he tells Demona in response to her scolding that he intends to "make it up to them" later. (He also tells her, of course, that within the larger context of preserving peace with the humans, his actions are necessary and justified.)

Todd>Always a fan of your reviews. :)

The first time I saw Gargoyles it was the last part of Awakenings when Demona was giving her speech to Goliath, right before Elisa jumped Demona. For the inital moment, I thought "Batman?" and then I quickly saw it was nothing of the sort. Style was different. As I watched the series more, I deffinetly saw X-Men in the story and characters.
As you said, Goliath and Demona are the Xavier and Magneto of Gargoyles.
Demona also resembles Mystique only in color (blue body, red hair).
A misunderstood race that is hated by much of the rest of the world, but still feels the need to help them.
The Labyrinth and the Morlock's sewer home. Talon becomes sort of what Storm was, as a leader for them. And like the Morlocks, they do not involve themselves readily into the battles with the X-Men/Gargoyles.

There are more comparrisons, but I have to get ready for work :)

Once again, this summer, I'll be watching, one by one, the original 65 episodes of "Gargoyles" - this time beginning with the Season One DVD and then seeing the Season Two episodes on my videotapes. (Though I have the suspicion that, after seeing how the Season Two videotapes look compared to the DVD, I'll be all the more eager to see the Season Two DVD come out!) I watched "Awakening Part One" today.

If you look closely at the banquet, during the scene near the start where a couple of the men at the side table are talking about the Captain in a not-too-flattering manner, there's a plate on the table of what appears to be potatoes. (If those are potatoes, that's an anachronism much more serious than a stone castle in 10th century Scotland!)

One neat bit that I noticed this time around: immediately after Goliath gives that very courtly bow before Princess Katharine at the high table, we see her looking absolutely astonished. As if she's taken aback that one of those "monsters" can - and does - behave in such an elegant and noble fashion.

Of course, there are all the "old favorites" to see. The introduction of Elisa (and Officer Morgan) at the very beginning outside the Eyrie Building. The 10th century Scotland flashback scene which I still absolutely enjoy. Our introductions to the gargoyles, particularly Goliath and Demona. (Greg's mentioned how the Disney staff was nervous about "Gargoyles" being seen as a "Batman" rip-off, but I'll confess that when I first saw this episode, what I was reminded of was "X-Men" rather than "Batman" - I had a certain basic familiarity with the X-Men because I'd seen some episodes of the then-airing FOX animated series. For me, that conversation in Part One between Goliath and Demona after the great hall had a strong echo of the arguments between Professor Xavier and Magneto.) The big shock of who's behind the betrayal of Castle Wyvern - followed by Hakon smashing the stone gargoyles.

A side-note, about Greg's commentary on this ep (which I skipped this time around); it contains one of the rare times when I feel inclined to disagree with him. Greg mentions that Goliath is in the wrong in sending the trio and Bronx down to the rookery after their clash with the refugees. However, I believe that he did the right thing (at least, where Brooklyn, Lexington, and Bronx were concerned). Remember, the main reason why humans are hostile towards gargoyles is because gargoyles seem so scary and monstrous to them. Therefore, advancing on them with a lot of snarling and growling and flailing your claws in the air is only going to reinforce those fears of theirs, and will make matters even worse. For this reason, any responsible leader would have to discipline Lex and Brooklyn for behaving that way.

(On the other hand, I do view Goliath in the wrong for sending Broadway into the rookery, since Broadway wasn't taking part in the growling and snarling; he'd been merely peacefully eating at the time, and was only standing next to Brooklyn and Lexington because he was bewilderedly trying to find out what all the excitement was about. So he hadn't done anything meriting punishment. It's kind of like someone quietly reading in a schoolroom while a few of the other kids are doing something disruptive like, say, having an eraser fight, and when the principal walks in, he gives the kid quietly reading detention along with the ones engaging in the eraser fight, jumping to the conclusion that he was taking part in the fight because he was in the same room. But since Goliath's action saves Broadway's life, I won't be too hard on him about it.)

At the cliffhanger, it appears that Demona was one of the gargoyles killed in the massacre, and Goliath certainly believes that. I wonder how many first-time viewers thought the same. (I don't remember for certain now, but I suspect that I was expecting her to return. She'd had far too big a role in Part One, in sharing the Captain's bitterness towards the humans, to be written out at the end of the very first episode.)

I still like the "preview" at the end, where Elisa's saying to Morgan "I'm going to find out", the theme music starts building up in the background, and then we see the intro sequence.

Great stuff, once again.

There was spam again? must have been deleted, eh? I would have liked to see version 3.0 before it was gone. The Banshee you say?

40 days left until pre-registration for The Gathering 2005 ends.
59 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada!

If we're going for linking them... check my link for a possible layout (I'm already gathering the rambles together - either way, if I include them, I need those links :)

DPH> Got it. Thanx. As for your idea - I put it up for discussion here: What do you think - should I include the Rambles of Greg Weisman with the episode summaries / reviews on the GFW? It's not a big deal (just me walking through the Ask Greg - Archive)? And if so - should I copy them over or just link them in? (In case of copying, I'll set a link to the source in any case, and I'd ask Gorebash before I start doing so - just asking for opinions here).

Battlebeast> When I was in Canada last year I was happily surprised to see that on the $5 note. I work for a returned vetrans club, so it's always nice to see the ways that they are honoured.
Also, we get 2 public holidays as well. ANZAC Day on April 25 and Rememberence Day on Nov. 11.

Enough with the off topicness, back to your (hopefully spam-free) regular comment room ^_^

Does anyone know of a website with pictures of the characters as they appeared in 'Future Tense', or any other non season one style (though any pictures are welcome, preferably 800x600 or better)?

Scarecrows> Just thinking out loud (so to speak), but maybe the idea could be that people were once able to bring scarecrows to life as sort of straw-golems to do farm chores which may have included keeping crows out of the crops. Over time the knowledge of the spell that brought a scarecrow to life was lost to the ages, but people continued putting up straw stuffed clothing to keep bird out of the fields, even though the original significance had been forgotten.

Or maybe something else.

Thanks for your recitation of the "Flanders Fields" poem, Patrick.

Toon Zone just posted a second interview with Greg Weisman (the first was a month ago, about "Gargoyles"), this time about "The Batman", since Greg wrote a few episodes for it, including the two-part season finale that aired a few weeks back, introducing Clayface into the series. One of the more amusing tidbits in the interview was Greg mentioning that the Scarecrow was his favorite Batman villain (and adding that it's a pity that so far there aren't any plans to introduce him in the series), amusing since he'd commented once at "Ask Greg" that he thought of scarecrows as having a certain "gargoyle-ish" nature to the point where he wanted to do an episode about them in "Gargoyles", but couldn't figure out how to make them distinct from the "Batman" Scarecrow.

(I don't think that any of the currently extant gargoyle clans would be likely to have scarecrowish elements about them - maybe if there was a clan in Kansas.... Of course, they might not make an ideal substitute for regular scarecrows simply because the crows would still be able to pillage the crops in the daytime, while the gargs were asleep. But watching over farmland could certainly count as protecting, if in a less dramatic manner than urban crime-fighting.)

I'm working on this spamming situation.

I had spent time on Friday working on it but didn't get things done in time. This weekend was spent with family (I so rarely see them) and then on Monday I was called into work because a server went down and nobody knew how to fix it. (Turned out to be a really obscure memory bug in an application. Tracking that down took hours. :\)

So until the new CR is unveiled (hopefully sometime this week) I'll keep manually cleaning out the spam.

Curiously, no spam on Sunday. So even spammers recognize the sabbath? Hmm...

Patrick> Well deserved. Actuall, this is one of the FEW times I actually ENVY Americans. You guys have TWO days to pay respect to your fallen soldiers; we in Canada only have ONE and it's not even a holiday! (both of yours are.)

But we do respect our soldiers; "In Flander's Fields" is on our $5 dollar bill.

I am remembering my grandfather today, as I do everytime I watch "M.I.A." (My grandfather flew 39 Bombing raids over nazi Germany and was one of the last couple of planes to drop bombs on (or near) hittler's complex in the hours before he painted his bedroom red.

LUKINUK, F/O Thomas Alexander (J92082) - Distinguished Flying Cross - No.640 Squadron - Victoria Cross- Awards effective 8 September 1945

(reprinted from Royal Canadian Air Force Website)
Flying Officer Lukinuk has proven himself to be a skilful and courageous air bomber. Throughout a large number of operational missions these qualities have done much to ensure the successful completion of his sorties. In December 1944, while attacking Essen, his aircraft was severely damaged by fire from the ground defences. Unperturbed, this officer gave his captain excellent directions which enabled him to press home a telling attack. In the face of the enemy, Flying Officer Lukinuk has always displayed great skill, courage and devotion to duty.

RIP Grandpa.

That is all I will say.

I was reading Ask Greg yesterday and it occured to me that the Himalaya-Coldstone-World Tour script Greg wrote for the defunct Gargoyles comic would be an excellent feature for the DVD.

Does Todd or anyone know what the legal status on it is? Does Marvel own it? Or Disney? Did Greg produce it freelance?

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae (1872-1918)

And just a reminder: I'm still lacking episode summaries for a few episodes. Click my link, take a look, choose an episode, sum it up and send it to me (or choose an episode, mail be about your choice and send me the summary with two or three weeks). Come on, people - can't be THAT hard to get the last few episodes summed up.
