Geeez, Siren, I'm slipping, you seriously had me going there...

And I hate to admit it.

So, what's the word? Are we getting our new comic this week or what?

Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]
"Toilet out of order. Please use floor below." - Sign in public restroom stall.

Yeah, I emailed him, personally. I tried to call his cell, but got his voice mail. I'll see him in a few days and mention it again, in case he hasn't checked his mail lately. He's been real busy between producing Robot Chicken and gearing up for his next movie, The Brazilian Job. We're going out on Tuesday to have a few drinks...and who knows what else.... >:)

Okay...I admit it, I'm a habitual liar.
However, I didn't lie about these things:
I DID email him about it.
He is producing Robot Chicken
And he is staring in Brazilian Job.

But, everything else, yeah...pure fantasy. *sigh*. Anyone can email him at his official website. www.sethgreen.com, but he can't answer every email. But boy, telling that story was fun.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

Wait, you e-mailed Seth Green, personally? Or by some other method, cause if you knew seth greens e-mail.........wow
Warcrafter - [grafixfangamer1 at sbcglobal dot net]
Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

I emailed Seth Green and suggested he do one. Even mentioned how Kenner already made some horrible, funny looking action figures like "no neck" Brooklyn :D Maybe he'll bite and make one :D I would be tickled pink if he did
Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

Siren> "I'm still waiting for Robot Chicken to parody it :D"

Same here. :D How fun would that be?

Kind of makes me wonder whether they'd get any of the VAs involved in it...

"Ignore Me!" - Venture Bros.

Quick question: a while ago, someone in here posted some links to some other comic distributors online. Does that person still have those links? I ordered the first issue through one of those sites, and I thought I bookmarked it, but I seem to have lost it.
Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75 at gmail dot com]
"I don't want to change the world. I just want to watch it go by."

Yeah, I suggest those who wish to buy TLU as a book or audiobook do so through his publishing company personally...so the RIGHT MAN gets paid for it. When you buy his books at B&N, and other book stores, he gets a very small % of the profits due to bad business dealings. Here is the site: http://www.conlanpress.com/index.html
A graphic novel is also due, as are two sequals to TLU.
I got to talk personally to Mr. Beagle once too. He called me on the phone and we talked for 2 hours. It was fantastic. The man deserves to be recognized and paid for his work.

On the film(s):

Lion's Gate owns the animated film now.
The live action film is set to be produced and directed by Geoff Murphy and Michael Pakleppa. Christopher Lee is the only one who has publically said he would do it, but has not officially signed on, as there is still many legalities with rights and budgeting that need to be handled first. My hope to see this made within the next 10 years even is pretty dim. Which is unfortunate. With movies like LOTR doing so well, it is a perfect time to spring this movie on audiences.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

TLU> There seems to be two parts to the DVD. It's kinda complicated, and I may not have everything absolutely right. First, I agree most everyone didn't like the American release (for a while I considered ordering the German, region-less version. Still in English, but widescreen). When I went to Dragon*Con this summer, I got some facts about a campaign going on, which may be (have been) part of the fan one Siren mentioned. Somebody had some of the rights to the film and wouldn't let them go without a good amount of money, nor the rights to a web domain (I think). So, for those who bought copies of Beagle's books at the table that weekend, the money went straight to getting those rights back, and to getting things in motion for the live action movie (yes!). It looks like things were going well. And I got to talk with Peter Beagle, which pleased me very much.

Willie: #2's delay was said to be down to the art, I seem to recall, but I don't know what the deal is with subsequent issues. Could be any number of reasons.

1. SLG is a small company. Now Gargoyles and Tron at least are much higher selling than the rest. That incurs extra costs to produce and distribute enough copies to meet the higher demand. If the up-front costs of expanding their operation for a tiny portion of their range is too high, or if the risks involved are too great (Disney could yank the lisence, the comics could fail, etc.), then the next best possibility may be to make the size of the production more manageable. 4 comics a year which meet demand would be better than 6 comics a year where they can't produce enough and, therefore, get lower sales.

2. Short-term issues like illness, injuries, house fires, postage problems can all cause short-term delays for artists. Long term? I know artists who would love to be full-time comic book artists but just can't make rent on comic stuff alone. I don't know what the SLG artists are paid, but I'm guessing not much so it wouldn't exactly astonish me if the art staff were juggling better-paid work with 'Gargoyles'. I seem to remember David Hedgecock was involved in Ape Comics or something like that.

3. I know in the UK, lisenced comics have been clamped down upon to various degrees by Copyright Promotions, who are supposed to police comics to make sure the integrity of the lisenced characters is maintained, sometimes in incredible inane ways. E.g. "If he doesn't frown on the model sheet, he can't frown in the comic." The Turtles comic in the UK wasn't allowed to do any kind of ongoing storylines at all. Disney has quite a history in comics and I'd be surprised if anything that draconian was being enforced by them but it's not unheard of that lisence-holders (or, more likely, the tin Hitlers appointed to police the lisence on behalf of companies) can cause frustrations for creators.

4. People complained about off-model characters and suchlike after #1. And 'Gargoyles' is extremely complicated by the standards of just about any other lisenced comic. With the Turtles, there's maybe nine or ten characters, a sewer that looks roughly right and the outside of the Technodrome. With Ducktales, ten stars, the money pit and the skyline of Duckburg. 'Gargoyles' has a couple of dozen established characters in the first story alone, a good number of established sets and locations, and it all takes place against a backdrop that must look like Manhattan. That's a lot to get right. Which is presumably why the comic has an art supervisor.

I'm not saying that any of these things have happened to 'Gargoyles', just that there are plenty of things that could happened.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not all that important to me why the schedule is as it is; it's just an unfortunate fact of the comic's existence. Our part in it is essentially the same either way: "Wait. Buy. Pimp."

Ed

Yes, sorry, I meant to add Special Edition. It will be for the 25th Anniversary and include:
A better cover
Better menus
ACTUAL Bonus material including the trailer, games, and bios
WIDESCREEN
And remastered picture and sound.

The DVD that came out in 2004 was pretty much just recorded from VHS to DVD, with cheasy cover, menus, and no bonus material. I have that DVD, but I don't even count it, it was so craptacular. All the fans were also disppointed and wanted more. That's why Lion's Gate wanted proof of wanting more. So I guess they accomplished even more then what we are asking. We are simply asking for Part 2 of Season 2 to be released. They released TLU to DVD and it wasn't "good enough" and demanded more and got it.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

"Last Unicorn"> I'm wondering much the same thing, since it's on my DVD shelf as well. Did you mean a new DVD, maybe with new features?

It is a good sign when something is parodied. Especially when you look at how many views they had.

More proof that little people matter to what they want on DVD....

Lion's Gate announcing they are releasing The Last Unicorn to DVD. Doesn't sound too big right? Wrong. For years, the fans of TLU have been posting petitions, sending letters/emails, creating webpages, etc. One of the biggest supporters, TLU author's business associate, Conner, got in contact with Lion's Gate, who own the rights to the animated movie. They said they had no plans unless he could show them good cause to release it. So Conner went to a popular TLU message board and asked us. And we spoke. And come 2/6/07...it will be on DVD.

Samuel> Did you mean, how would the preorder thing work? Because, since I don't work in Disney's marketing department, I have no idea how to actually arrange something like the preorder only program, other than mention it to them and they actually agree to do it. Maybe if enough people actually express interest in such a program and let them know, they would actually do it.
Basically, the way AnimEigo ran the preorder campaign is the more preorders they received, the lower the sale price got. For example, it would take, say, 500 preorders at $75 for the title to even get produced. At 1000 preoders, the price would drop to $60, at 2000--$50, 3000 or more--$35.

Battle Beast> You forgot the rest of Jurgan's statement: ", then say to themselves, okay, I've done my part." He even said 2 sentences before "I don't really think there's anything wrong with doing something unlikely to work." His point was not to just sign an online petition, which are pretty much useless in 99.999% of the cases, and only sign the petition because you've "done your part".

THANKS SIREN!!!

I'd sent off an email to the EIC of SLG and she responded to my inquiry on the Gargoyles comic a few weeks ago. The release plan kind of sucked though. My original email is below her response. I don't get why the book is at a horrible pace. Is Greg too busy, is the artist slow? Why is it like this? Are the other Disney/SLG books like this as well? This kind of release is gonna kill this book possibly. Retailers and readers may forget the book even exists. Which I hope really doesn't happen as I want to see what stories Greg has to tell. More stories from its creator is great, but to possibly never see these is not good to know.

Willie,
Issue two is being colored now and will be out in November. Issue
three will be out, we hope, in January or February. I anticipate it
being on a regular quarterly schedule from that point on.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I've discussed Gargoyles Comics/DVDs on nmy friend's Internet Radio Show.

I've also told all of my customers at work about them, and I even have some Gargoyles pages (MSTings, Con Photos/Report) on my website.

How's THAT for spreading the word?

I'm actually interested by Siren's comment about making the website for that Disney short, because I do have a small website that's still under construction, so I could probably use some space there to devote to Gargoyles.

There are already a number of Gargoyles fan sites on the Net though, so I guess that probably wouldn't be of much use. We need to find some other way to spread the word. As a loyal Gargoyles fan, I've tried telling people who grew up watching Gargoyles, about the DVDs, but typically, people aren't willing to spend $30 or $40 on a DVD set for a show that they haven't watched in ten years.

Hi everyone!

The German gargoyles-fandom is getting international ;-)
2007 is now the third year in a row that we (that means some dedicated fans) plan, organize, print and sell a Gargoyles Calendar. 2007th's calendar is a special one because this year, many international artists contributed to it.
The calendar is a complete non-profit project and only exists to keep the spirit of the gargoyles alive. If you are interested, take a look at some preview pics as well as the pictures from the last years calendars:

Sorry for the "advertising" here, we just want to share :-)

Hi everyone. I've got a request. We do a voice-over podcast online, and this Wednesday Thom Adcox will be one of several guests appearing in podcast recordings all week. (also Charlie Adler, Adam Wylie, Rob Paulsen, Bob Bergen, Pat Fraley, and Ginny McSwain) We're looking for fan questions to ask our guests. I figured this would be a good place to look for any Gargoyles fan questions for Thom. (questions about his role as Lexington, inside info, his voice-over career, amusing stories, etc.) Also, if anyone has any questions for our other guests, we really appreciate it.

You can email questions directly to our host at: me@avimelman.com. Also, feel free to check out the podcast at http://www.avimelman.com/podcast

Make up your minds...

But I think disney eventully will put it out cause they seem to want to make bank on anything they can put on dvd. Now just might not be the time to put out season 3,

Shara - [jeanie54_2000 at yahoo dot com]

I don't like to toot my own horn...but...Lemme tell you a story...

A few years back, I rediscovered a little Disney animted short called Small One. I had loved it as a child and bought it on VHS through Ebay. I looked online and found very little info on it. So I made a webpage on it. I broke many laws and posted the short on the webpage as well. I even contacted Don Bluth and showed him the site and he was pleased with it. And was happy to see it wasn' totally forgotten. I got several emails a week about the site and how people loved the short and thanked me for posting it. Then about a year later, a local Florida paper printed an article. Disney said they would NEVER release Small One to DVD because it was too focused on religion. The writer even mentioned a website devoted to the animated short and mentioned about a petition on it that was signed by over a 1000 people. Being I had the only Small One site, you can bet he was talking about my site. I sent an email to Disney telling them it was hypocritical to say they won't release Small One due to religion, in the same year they released Hunchback to theaters, and that was highly religious. Of course, I got an automated answer back that had nothing to do with my email. But I pressed on, working on the site when I could. 2 years later, Disney announced, they were releasing Small One to DVD alone with 2 other Disney Christmas shorts. They were true to their word. And I was true to mine. My mission was accomplished, I took down the site, least for now. When I reinstate it, it will NOT include the video, as I want people to buy the DVD.
I'm sure I was not the only influence in showing Disney the public wanted the animated short on DVD, but I still reminded people of it, and they emailed Disney too. So obviously, something worked. If after only a few years of announcing it would never go to DVD, they release it to DVD, why else would they go against their own word? So yes, the little people DO count. And if each fan sends one email, it CAN make a difference.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

Jurgan> "What I object to is people who take an action almost certain to fail..."

ALMOST CERTAIN TO FAIL??? HOW DO YOU KNOW SENDING AN EMAIL WILL FAIL WITHOUT EVEN TRYING???

If no one does it, then OF COURSE IT WILL FAIL. If enough people do it, then... you know.

What if every inventor ever ridiculed for their invention gave up before they finished?

BESIDES, that's not all I've done. I go to my Local comic stores and spread the word. When I go ito HMV or Future Shop I put the copies they have where people can see them. I buy copies for presents. I do little things like that.

I WANT TO NEXT DVD TO COME OUT.

Battle Beast - [Canada]

The problem with being farcical in print is that the printed word can't easily pick up the tone of voice, which is crucial in letting one know whether the speaker is being serious or not. This is one reason why I'm not very keen on sarcasm in print (alongside the fact that I'm not keen on sarcasm, period). To use a slightly mangled "Simpsons" quote (altered to make the context clearer), "Mr. Burns can't see you winking over the phone, Homer."

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Battle Beast> "I don't hear anyone else with any good ideas."
I posted a while back here about an alternate way to market the DVDs: a preorder only campaign. I didn't get one single reply from anyone here whether or not anyone else would be interested in this.

I put forth this idea of a preorder campaign, like what AnimEigo ran for some of their titles, in an email--yeah, I know it was an email--via the form you gave.

Online petitions> With the exception of the Mononoke petition (I, too, remember that) and maybe a couple others, I believe it was pretty much proven several years ago that they are completely useless due to things like bogus names, names repeated multiple times, and screennames being used instead of people's real names (if you're not willing to put down your actual name, how seriously do you expect me, the petition's target, to take you?).

Ooooh, spelling. I did my English Composition II term paper on that topic back in college. I really wish I still had a copy of that. I believe the system I arrived at had:
All consonants would have one and only one sound (with only a few exceptions), and all sounds would have one and only one spelling.
'c' only used for the 'ch' sound--like cello.
The elimination of 'q' and 'x'.
All long vowel sounds would be 'aa' (play would be plaa), 'ee' (bee), 'ii' (fly--flii), 'oo' (bold--boold), and 'uu' (view--vyuu). The long 'u' sound is really 'y' followed by the current 'oo'--like in tool--sound.
I think the only problem I had was with 'th', 'sh', and 'zh'; whose spellings would remain the same.

The problem with the systems I came across in my research was that they added a bunch of new letters for sounds that you can barely make out or sounds variations that are extremely insignificant, or spelled many sounds in ways that are not currently used.
The only sound I introduced a different spelling for was changing the long 'u' sound ('yoo') to the current 'oo'. This took care of the problem of how to spell the 'oo' sound in my system.

The fact is that "learning" how to spell in English is mostly memorization, with a little actual learning sprinkled in. The "i before e" rhyme, that popped up here a little while back, is a prime example of this. The number of ways to spell a particular sound is ridiculous. I heard the average is something like 24 different ways to spell each sound in the English language, as opposed to about 3 in Spanish.

I know, I know, but if we changed the spelling system to something that made sense, there would be no Spelling Bee's. And that would be a real shame.

"X is for xylophone because X is ALWAYS for xylophone" -- Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book

Sorry for double post.

I just realised, of course, that different dialects would have to be standardised before Mark Twain's idea would work at all. In other words, impossible. Still a fun idea, though.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Mark Twain's suggestions are actually reasonable, provided the changes were made much more slowly than once a year. They would start as alternative spellings, of course. Either on the internet, or regarded as dialectal (such as color and colour, honor and honour, etc.)
I disagree about X and Y, though. X should be used for 'sh' and Y still has a use, at the beginnings of words. The letters "thorn" and "eth" can be used for 'th' since it is really two different sounds. You can get "thorn" and "eth" on a regular word processor using insert symbol.
Not that it matters. We could also work to make English *more* confusing, like adding "gh" to the ends of words that don't have any sound there.

Vaevictis Asmadi

First off, let me say that if anyone does feel like sending an e-mail, please do. I don't think discouraging people from taking some kind of action is a good idea. As long as it's not something actively harmful to the chances of Season 2 Part 2 getting released (like saying Disney is a bunch of idiot and they should sell the property to the fans), I say go ahead.

That being said, here is why I personally tend not to send e-mails or sign online petitions in situations like this. From what I've seen, companies tend to disregard them because it's simply too easy to send an e-mail. How hard is it to get someone to copy and paste something, fill out a form with a few bits of information, or click a button? More unsrupulous people (by which I certainly don't mean anyone here) could even make hundreds of thousands of letters come from numerous e-mail addresses that in fact all belong to a handful of people. The problem is that it takes quite a bit more effort and investment to actually buy something (like a DVD) than it does to send an e-mail or sign a petition saying you want that DVD. The very few online petitions I know of that have succeeded (getting a Japanese languague track on "Princess Mononoke" comes to mind) tend to be more along the lines of "If you do/don't do thing 'x', I will NOT buy your product".

With an online effort to get Disney to consider putting Season 2 Part 2 out, I belive there would be one of two outcomes. One, Disney recieves an underwhelming number of e-mails, reinforcing the idea that this property does not have a large audience. Two, Disney recieves a huge number of e-mails and has someone check on the sales figures for the property. The sales figures show that only a tiny percentage of these people actually purchased Season Two Part One. Disney figures that the e-mail numbers at best represent a lot of friends and family who want to help out the fans of the show that they know, but have no intention of actually purchasing the DVD.

Again, if your feeling on the possible outcomes of an e-campaign are different than mine, don't let me stop you from trying it out. But as Greg W. has said, I think the best thiing we can do is spread the word and try to get sales of both the DVD and comic up. If you haven't bought eitther one of the DVDs yet, see what you can do. Ask for it as a holiday gift. Give it as one to people who you think would enjoy it. If you can afford it, do a good deed and buy one to donate to a library of to people in need (like a shelter). If you're holding off buying Part One of Season 2 until Part Two comes out, bite the bullet and buy. Yes, it's frustrating that we might not get the whole season, but owning half of it on DVD is better than owning none. Show the DVD to your friends who haven't seen the show. Don't press, don't explain the whole storyline to them, just show them a bit of Season One. If they don't like it, fine. If they do, see if you can get them to get the DVDs or the comic or both. The fact is, DIsney is a business and the best way to talk to a business is with your dollars. Let them know your opinions in writing, certainly, but don't negltect t follow your words with actions.

Battle Beast - Then maybe you oughta read Ed's post below. There's an idea or two there with merit. :P

I find it kind of odd, too, that you say to make an effort "however small it may be" and then at the same time say nobody wants to help and we're sitting on our butts. There are quite a few of us doing *something*, and some things are very small, but it's still something. And some of the people doing those somethings aren't necessarily attendees at the comment room.

Just sayin'. :)

On spelling - I prefer legible type. Not perfect by any means (their/there/they're and you/you're mistakes, and general typos like "teh") but at least I can still figure out what they're trying to convey. Kythera's quoted example, and unfortunately half of demon@'s typing, is extremely difficult to decipher.

I'm with Todd on this one. o.o; (No offense intended, demon@; I just have a hard time with some of your spelling. )

Points to ponder:

1)GXB's statement "but SLG's website is incompetently run" is completely true. In my opinion, they need to either fire the current webmaster or fire the person who is supplying the webmaster with info, or do both. I could do a better job. Either the webmaster doesn't have access to accurate company information or just doesn't care or can't connect how changing content in one results in content needing to be changed in another area.

2)<If they say that November 29th is the release date, than there's a 95% chance of that being the case.> That's a given if they kept their information up to date. But on the slg website, they still have gargoyles #3 being released in November. How do I know that date from Diamond wasn't the original planned release date of Gargoyles #3?

On the other hand, Amazon.com still has this listing: Gargoyles #2 by David Hedgecock (illustrator), Will Terrell (colorist) Greg Weisman (writer) (Paperback - Sep 28, 2006)

So, GXB, aside from Diamond Distributions, do any other websites confirm this date? I want to believe but I need some confirmation.

Hey, all I can do is try to get the fandom's buts of thier chairs and DO something *HOWEVER SMALL IT MAY BE* and that's all I can do. I'm gonna try and do what I can. I've purchased multiple sets of Season and two as presents and I've emailed Disney now twice... I've let people know the DVDs are out there. If no one wants to help me, so be it.

Anyway... I was recently reminded of this tidbit:

"A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling," by Mark Twain

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would
be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and
likewise "x" would no longer be part of the
alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be
retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be
dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling,
so that "which" and "one" would take the same
konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y"
replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j"
anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue
iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless
double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so
modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and
unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud

I do not suffer fools, gladly or otherwise.

I just think that it feels kind of sloppy to have that sort of poor spelling about. (I've sometimes wondered how much of it might be a consequence of people reading less and therefore having to guess more often as to how a word's spelled from the way that it sounds.)
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Worst case scenario, people already know this stuff but might remember next time to double-check.

Anyway, on the DVDs...

I've been thinking. Writing to Disney is okay, fine, but they basically already know there's a fair sized audience in residence -- they just don't know that this audience is sufficiently large to sustain a third DVD outing. Greg's catchphrase is SPREAD THE WORD and I think we should be looking at innovative ways of doing that.

One thing that occurred to me. There must be hundreds, maybe thousands, of actively campaigning fan groups on the web in similar fields trying to put their niche product into the public eye. People trying to get the next Gargoyles DVD made, people trying to get viewers for Veronica Mars, to get people to read Spider-Girl or to watch Serenity at the cinema. And a good 90% of the fight in these situations is simply word of mouth: getting people who'd like Product X to give it a go, or informing people who are already fans of Product Y that they can now buy that product.

"Hey, there's a DVD of Gargoyles out. It's really good." "Hey, that film Serenity is really good." "Hey, you should really check out 'Veronica Mars'".

It's quite likely that Veronica Mars guy is also a Gargoyles fan or knows a couple of Gargoyles fan, while the Gargoyles fan knows a few people who would dig Veronica Mars if it was recommended to them. They just need to, as Greg might say, SPREAD THE WORD. And that's better accomplished collectively than individually.

So the idea would be to set up a kind of Fan Campaign Website where people from all different campaigns could gather and (1) plug their own campaigns, (2) learn about other campaigns, and (3) find out what groups are trying to SPREAD THE WORD in case you can help them out too.

Very short, very pithy plugs -- not about evangelical preaching, just about telling people what they need to know. For example:

GARGOYLES
What is it? 1994 dramatic animated series by Disney. (Link to More Information...)
How can I SPREAD THE WORD? Tell people there are DVDs and a comic continuation available. (Link to More Information...).
What's the goal? The next 26 episodes on DVD and the continuation of the comic series.

VERONICA MARS
What is it? Noirish CW mystery series set on a college campus.
How can I SPREAD THE WORD? Tell people it's on Tuesdays at 9.
What's the goal? Season Four.

etc.

Obviously there'd be links to more information, where you can buy associated DVDs or comics or movie tickets or whatever. But the main idea is (1) to inform people of other products to buy and promote; and (2) to get the word out better by pooling resources with all these other groups.

If the site became sufficiently large, perhaps it would be possible to do something a bit like Last FM -- you type in what you're interested in and get suggestions for other material along a similar theme. That's more complex than I'd know how to set up, but it would work on the same principles as the "hey, ElfQuest and Gargoyles have overlapping fandoms!" epiphany.

Not sure if anyone has any other ideas, or thoughts on how to refine this one.

Ed

Greg B.> I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you, I was just expressing my concern. I have no reason to doubt you or Diamond Distributors, and I'd be superhappy if Gargoyles #2 came out next week. Todd: If you understood what the person was trying to say what do you care how it was written?

demon@

Todd> I agree with you to a point; "loose" for "lose" does tend to drive me crazy. But teh is just a typo; I don't think anyone actually thinks the spelling is really teh.

It bothers me *much* more when things like this crop up in official business or advertising. Chatting informally on the internet, people can be forgiven for not proofreading everything they write and certainly can be forgiven for typos. But when a company sends me an email or letter, posts on their website, or even puts up a sign in their place of business, it's an official communication and it represents their company. It bothers me a lot more when companies can't be bothered to take the time to represent themselves professionally and accurately.

Once my local grocery store had a sign up for weeks saying "Do to construction, this door is closed." I used to shake my fist at it every time I passed until finally someone came along with a magic marker and fixed it ;) Still not particularly professional looking, but less irritating to me...

Incidentally, I'm a bit concerned about the statement "What have we got to loose?" I've many times seen "lose" spelled on the Internet "loose", even though they have different meanings: "loose" means "to untie". It is not an alternate spelling for "lose".

(I'm also less than thrilled with the use of "it's" when one means "its" - "it's" is a contraction of "it is" - or "teh" for "the".)

Jurgan is correct. If people are going to contact a company to try and make things happen it needs to be done right. You get out of it the effort you put into it. It takes more effort to write a letter than it does to send an e-mail. Thus, companies are more likely to pay attention to it. There is still no guarantee, but it is more likely. The other advantage is that it gets something physical (the letter) into at least someone's hands, as opposed to an e-mail which can be quickly deleted. To put it bluntly, if people are only willing to send e-mails, then to the company it looks like they aren't serious about it.

Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

Also, hand-written letters are probably more effective than e-mails, because Disney knows they take more effort. Showing that you're willing to put in the time to write a real letter is more encouraging than shooting off a quickie e-mail.

People always make that argument about slacktivism. "It can't hurt." You want to know what the downside is? The downside is that people do the easy thing and then don't bother to do anything else. They pat themselves on the back and say "well, I did my part." It encourages people to be lazy. That's the problem.

Another method of trying to get a product is to start at the end of the distribution chain. Ask employees/management of retail stores for the product that you want but can't find, say Gargoyles S2V2 DVD. If management starts to get lots of requests for a product that they don't have in stock/don't carry, there's some chance that they'll ask their supplier for that product. If the supplier starts getting lots of requests from stores for a product, they'll most likely try to get the product to those stores where there seems to be a demand where they might not have seen one, since it's a high probablility of actual revenue ($$$) if lots of people are asking for it. You can see where this is going.

I know the old reel.com (really bad PR helped put them out of business) used to have a form that you'd be given if you searched for something that wasn't currently available. I'm thinking that if a title that wasn't currently available was searched for by enough people, this would cause the form to come into existence. I know I did it for Mulan, and maybe Anastasia.

I know buy.com has a product availablility alert form for when an existing product goes out of stock, but I'm almost positive they don't have anything like what reel.com had.

ANYTHING will help at this point. Haveing a defeatest attitude DEFINATLY WON'T HELP. If EVERYONE wrote one letter even once a week, we'd get heads turning. If NO ONE writes ANYTHING, they won't know we want the next DVD set.

WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO LOOSE???

HAVE YOU EVEN TRIED to write a quick email to them??? Go ahead and do it. They'll probably say it's not schedualed at this point but we'll pass along to whom it matters. They more letters they get, the better. and this is the quickest way I know of.

Why the defeatest attitude? Try anything, people!

Kris> When I was looking for Gargoyles, season one, the Disney rep was t Walmart and didn't even know it was due out that day (Dec 7, 2003, I belive.) IF it isn't a big release, they don't care.

I was looking for the DVD MURDER BY DEATH and HMV had it for $37.99 (!) I got it from Columbia House for $21.99, a $16 savings.

Oh what the heck, I went ahead and bought the Gummi Bears Volume 1 DVD set today (HMV has it for $31 Canadian, other places may have it cheaper. Wal-Mart or Zellers often sell cartoons at the best prices, but sometimes HMV beats them out for first-week-of-release sales specials).

Who knows whether it'll help.

A sales rep from Buena Vista's Canadian branch came into our Toys R Us when Cars was released the other week, to make sure the display for that film's DVD was on the floor and presentable. I wasn't thinking about Gargoyles at the time, I should've asked her what she'd recommend doing if I wanted to see the last volume(s) of the series on DVD. Ah well, maybe next time.

One disheartening thing is likely though--the more time passes after Season 2 Part 1's DVD release nearly a year ago, the less likely Part 2's release becomes.

BB: I'm sorry to say it, but I really doubt that e-mail petitions will do any good at this point. Maybe a little, to remind them that there are potential buyers, but the problem is that there aren't enough potential buyers, based on the Volume One sales. As Greg has said, it's great that we buy the DVD's, but if every hardcore fan bought ten copies, our sales would still stink. If we're contacting anyone, it should be those who don't already know about it.

The idea that e-mailing would accomplish anything is ultimately a form of slacktivism. Taken from snopes.com:

"We can't claim credit for having coined this term, nor do we know its actual origin, but we love it nonetheless. Slacktivism is the search for the ultimate feel-good that derives from having come to society's rescue without actually getting one's hands dirty, volunteering any of one's time, or opening one's wallet. It's slacktivism that prompts us to forward appeals for business cards on behalf of a dying child intent upon having his name recorded in the Guinness World Book of Records or exhortations to others to continue circulating a particular e-mail because some big company has supposedly promised that every forward will generate monies for the care of a languishing tot. Likewise, it's slacktivism that prompts us to want to join a boycott of designated gas companies or eschew buying gasoline on a particular day rather than reduce our personal consumption of fossil fuels by driving less and taking the bus more often. Slacktivism comes in many forms, but its defining characteristic is its central theme of doing good with little or no effort on the part of the person inspired to participate, through the mechanisms of forwarding, exhorting, collecting, or e-signing."

Remember, the effect you have is likely proportional to the effort you put in.

Thats something i´ve always wondered about too. Gargoyles have always been evil creatures of the night in books, series and movies though in true leyend, during the gothic age, they were actually creatures that protect, been placed in holy places (most of them catholic)such as churchs and cementeryes.
I thing the only reason for gargoyles to be usually evil creatures is that they are ugly things.
But only our favourite gargoyles show knew how to use the true form and soul of the leyends.

demon@

That's certainly good news about the comic. Now let's hope that SLG takes steps to ensure that such long delays never happen again and that the artists get their work in by the deadline.

I remember that episode of "Gummi Bears". Actually, that whole business of the gargoyle in that series being malevolent makes me think again of how often gargoyles in the media tend to be portrayed in a bad light. Almost every time a living gargoyle shows up in any work of fiction (even role-playing games), it's characterized as evil, or at least, extremely hostile. There are a few exceptions besides "Gargoyles" itself (the Disney adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", for example - and a children's fantasy called something like "The Farthest Away Mountain" which had some friendly gargoyles, though they turned out to be dwarf-like beings turned into gargoyles by a witch), but they aren't as common.

Now I'm having visions of a "Gargoyles" story (set after humans have finally begun some sort of real dialogue with gargoyles - long after "The Journey", of course), where the notion of portraying gargoyles in fiction or in fantasy games as evil (not to mention giving "fantasy villains" such as demons physical characteristics evocative of gargoyles) is becoming controversial, and pro-gargoyle groups even demonstrate outside movie theatres showing movies that have such depictions, accusing such depictions as racist and fanning the flames of bigotry. (Greg Bishansky's hypothetical militant gargoyle supporters - the kind of people ready to be as violent as the Quarrymen - would be perfect for that story.)

Oh, and welcome back, Bishansky. Thanks for returning, and I hope that you'll stay around again.

I think a long time ago we discussed elementals in this Room and whther they exists in the GU or not. I watched Pendragon today and I really feel the monster the Lady of the Lake summoned was a Water Elemental, and perhaps the little tornado things at the beginning of "Shadows of the Past" were Air elementals and the 'gargoyles' the Captain and Hakon created were Earth Elementals. Can't remember anything that'd be a Fire Elemental. Just thinking...

Good to see a firm release date!

Last week had some discussion about the new "Gummi Bears" DVD release. I've been watching some of the episodes. I wasn't sure what to expect - I've never seen it, and only heard of it when Greg mentioned it as an inspiration for Gargoyles. So far it doesn't have the character or plot development we appreciate so much in Gargoyles, but I've enjoyed most of the episodes.

Of interest here may be the episode called "Night of the Gargoyle." (spoilers ahead). The gargoyle is a small, ugly stone figure which comes to life the night of the full moon. It's very mischievous and destructive (like the gremlins in the movie of that name) and can be neutralized by natural sunlight or magic spells creating light. It's a far cry from the garogyles we're familiar with, but a little creativity demon makes me wonder how the Gummis would respond to, say Demona or Broadway.

As much as I hope that it comes out on 29 November, I have strong doubts. The SLG site www.slavelabor.com/index2.html lists Gargoyles #2 as being released on an undefined date in December.
