I don't think anyone can ever really know the question, if they already know the answer. Otherwise, something bad will happen.

"In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

Okay, I'll take a stab at namelessness.

I personally like having a large colour palette (sp?). My only complaint is that dark violet isn't a colour choice here.

I pretty much agree with your statement about Matt. I gotta ask though, who/what is The Question?

Hey Jurgan,

Yeah, I check in every now and then, usually to see what news there is for the upcoming comics, and the unrealistic hope that Season 2, Volume 2 and Season 3 will be announced for DVD.

Thanks, and glad you liked the thread. Unfortunately, interest died down for the thread, and it went into the Archives. I've considered starting a new one (it's been about a year since the first thread), but I don't know how much interest there would be, or how I would re-share the episode summaries I already did.

I do like to think that my efforts resulted in people buying the DVDs that otherwise wouldn't have though, so I might do another thread at some point just to hopefully get more interest generated for the show again.

Vinnie> So does anyone think Greg W. might put a reference about Princess Diana's death into the comic? I could just imagine Matt Bluestone shouting out to Hacker blaming the Illuminati for killing Di.

While Matt is a conspiracy theorist, he doesn't strike me as a conspiracy nut. Pretty tame when compared to The Question.

Antiyonder

Antiyonder: Also a nice little tidbit is that Dr. Wily's voice actor on Captain N is Ian James Corlett, the same person to voice Mega Man on the Mega Man Animated Series. Yes that too is another guilty pleasure of mine.

I used to love watching Mega Man, mainly cause of the theme song.

On the topic of old cartoons, you might wanna check out this guys intro overloads.

They're compilations of cartoon intros. It's kinda fun just seeing what ones you actually remember.

Ozzie Arcane

Vaevictus: I like this plan. I'm excited to be a part of it.

And incidentally, there's too goddamn many colors on this thing. Blue's blue, as far as I'm concerned.

I also think Vinnie raises an interesting point, even though I don't think this was his intent, but the thought entered my mind anyway. One of the interesting things about picking something up from the standpoint of late 1996 ten years after the fact is that you also know a lot of what's happened since then, which was something you didn't have back when the cartoon. Granted, I don't know how Greg's going to use any of this in a fictional universe (maybe not at all), but the thought did enter my head.

... a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than can women-whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands. If two lists were made of the most eminent men and women in poetry, painting, sculpture, music (inclusive of both composition and performance), history, science, and philosophy, with half-a-dozen names under each subject, the two lists would not bear comparison. We may also infer, from the law of the deviation from averages, so well illustrated by Mr. Galton, in his work on "Hereditary Genius" that ... the average of mental power in man must be above that of women (Darwin, Charles. 1896. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. New York: D. Appleton and Company page 564).

Since this is a gargoyles forum, maybe we should try and see how long we can manage without knowing somebody's name? Meaning, can we still manage to have normal conversations with the newcomer? An experiment!

Meh. I guess I should check the archive before I say stupid things; I keep misremembering stuff. Looks like in the archive Greg mostly not-answers the questions ("maybe they shave," "maybe it starts to grow later in life," "Angela doesn't have to," etc), but he did say the only facial hair Brooklyn could grow would be a goatee. For some reason I thought he was joking. Sorry about that. -_-
Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [Kth_dragon at hotmail dot com]

Demon@-there were a number of differences/changes made to gargoyles along the way. The most notable next to "Vows" was in the Gathering Pt. 2 when Owen first reveals himself as Puck. The original transition had owen start to spin-and them come out of the spin as Puck-landing daintily on one foot with his head tilted back(as you begin to hear him say "Heeeeeres...." and then he'd zoom at the Camera as he said "Puck", and the scene would fade. The revised edit had him in a elongated spin as you begin to hear him say "Heeere's..." and then you'd immediately see him zoom at the camera as he'd say "Puck"-thus making the revelation more of a surprise-then the scene would click to black-not fade.

There are others-but that's a key one.

There used to be a page with the animation differences - does that still exist?

_______

I always wondered about that double end thing And i really suspect that it wasnt an error, as Greg was told Think about it! Its so...Disney. Make it all look like the most tragic and sad thing, but give a little hint that there is always hope, even when everything seems lost
Demon@

Let's not forget that the wrong ending was used for Vows on the DVD. So there are definitely unused bits to the series.
Vinnie - [tpeano29 at hotmail dot com]
Peace!

I think I too might revise what I said a little. As a DIRECTOR, Spielberg is overrated. However, he has produced or executive produced many good things, including "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", the "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Animaniacs", "Freakazoid!", "The Goonies" and "Pinky and the Brain."

That, and I've heard (I'm still looking for where I read this) that he supposedly regretted making changes to the 2002 release of "E.T." If that's the case, he at least has more of a soul than George Lucas.

"I've never won an Oscar." -George Lucas

I don't recall where Greg said that none of the Manhattan clan shaves. I think he even said that Brooklyn could grow a goatee if he wanted, which seems to imply he shaves. I don't remember anything either way about Broadway or Lexington shaving, and I kind of assume since they're bald that they also are naturally beardless. But with gargoyles, that's not a safe assumption.

I can definitely see the clones changing their hair and clothes to differentiate themselves from their parents. Burbank shaving or trimming his beard, and changing his clothes, and Malibu growing a goatee. Plus Greg has said Brooklyn himself will look different after Timedancer. (I'm worried about the phrase "permanent injury" -- I don't want to see Booklyn disfigured!)

Somehow, I think Thailog has differentiated himself enough that he has no need to change his appearance, apart from that armor he wears.

Harvester of Eyes> There's nothing to feel guilty about, guilty pleasure is just a term anyway. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy quite a bit of shows with a ongoing plot, but simple programs can be just as enjoyable given the mood.

Heck, recently I came onto some downloads of the 1981 Spider-Man cartoon (the solo series, not Amazing Friends). All things considered, it's a pretty good cartoon, especially the 5 parter featuring Doctor Doom. I was just born when the cartoon premiered, so it was nice to see some of the episodes (Though I did win some episodes on ebay).

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo,com]

This has absolutely nothing to do with Gargoyles, but I wanted to share it.\

A new music video I made, it features footage from Pocahontas, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Brother Bear, and Balto. Even if you don't like these movies, you may still like the video, because the video isn't about these movies or characters, its about the song. And I am really really happy with how it came out and wanted to share it here:
The song is called "The Spirit Horse of the Cherokee" and is by the band Man O' War.

Scrabblemouse: To add onto what Vaevictus said about the Goliath Chronicles, it's a good thing they're not canon because they suck on toast.

Kerry: I think that any hair Demona might have on her body when she's human, she loses at sunset. Meaning she probably never has to shave.

Antiyonder: It's something we're all guilty of. I can't believe I once liked this show:

Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [kth dot dragon at gmail dot com]

Kerry (Kth) Boyd> He wants Captain N? I remember enjoying that one when I was a kid, but not enough that I'd have wanted to pay for it and take it home with me even then. The Legend of Zelda cartoon, maybe, but not Captain N... and I have the sneaking suspicion that if I looked at either one now I'd find it unwatchably silly.

Sometimes growing up sucks (finding out my childhood favorites look really stupid now ;_;), but I'm not sorry that it allowed me to understand more complex plots and storylines. Otherwise I might not have understood enough of Gargoyles, etc. to appreciate them properly, and that would be worse.

I don't know about that. I've purchased both the Captain N Set as well as The New Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 DVDs. The trick to enjoying a childhood favorite is to remind yourself before hand not to expect much. Though Super Mario Bros 3 aside from The Legend Of Zelda is probably one of the most game accurate as well a more well written than most game related toons (Until Sonic The Hedgehog).

Incidently, what did you think about Link and Zelda's appearance on Captain N?

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

That brings up a couple of interesting things...

I know that so far none of the main cast of gargs shaves, but I wonder if there's any meaning to keeping the hair they've got, since none seem to cut their head-hair either. I could see them having the attitude that one needs to be happy with what one was born with (since there's no social stigma to being born hairless), but perhaps they never really think about it at all and it just wouldn't occur to them to cut their hair.

The clones, being totally raised and steeped in human culture, I could totally see shaving, using hair dyes, etc. to help separate themselves from their "parents" and develop their individuality.

I also wonder if Demona takes the time to shave her legs in human form, or if she sees the need to normally. Heck, or even if she's got any body hair to begin with.

"For every complex problem, there is a solution which is simple, easy, and wrong."

Vinnie >> Yeah, when movie writers make dinosaur movies, accuracy to any science isn't exactly their first priority.

Scrabblemouse >> Welcome! As Battle Beast said, Season One and Season Two Volume One are available on DVD and can be ordered from Amazon, if you can't find them in stores (they generally aren't in US stores, either). They are unedited, and there are extras, such as the original series pitch. There are no deleted scenes, because no scenes were deleted after animation was done. (There are a few scenes that were never animated, you can probably find them in the Greg's Rambles section of this site).

Season Two, Volume Two is not available, because Disney keeps saying not enough people bought the other two DVDs. If they think they can't make a BIG profit, they won't release it. So every purchase of the other two helps.

"The Goliath Chronicles" is not considered canon because Greg and the rest of the original creative team didn't write it.

The REAL third season is the new Slave Labor Graphics comic, which currently has 5 issues. #1-2 are "The Journey" done as Greg originally wrote them. #3-#5 is the first all new canon story. #6 is due out soon, as well as Bad Guys #1. Bad Guys is one of 6 spin-offs Greg envisioned, and the only one so far to actually be produced. It will have 6 issues, and if it sells well, then more will be written, and more spin-offs will be published.

Vaevictis Asmadi
"For every complex problem, there is a solution which is simple, easy, and wrong."

Hi Scrabblemouse! Great to hear you rediscovered the show.

The TV episodes: The first season had 13 episodes and is out on Region 1 DVD. The second season had 52 episodes, and the first half is out on DVD (as "Season 2, Volume 1"). Disney haven't committed to releasing the second half of S2 yet so it's a big priority to get the word out to people who haven't heard about the release yet. There's also a third season called 'The Goliath Chronicles' but it was headed by a different team, was poorly received, and isn't counted in the canon for the comics.

The Comics: These pick up after the end of Season 2 and are scripted by the creator, Greg Weisman. They're published by Slave Labor Graphics (SLG) every other month. #6 is out in September, and a six-part mini-series spin-off called 'Bad Guys' starts in October so new issues of 'Gargoyles' and 'Bad Guys' will run in alternate months. There was also a Marvel series briefly in the 90s, but it's not canon.

The Spin-Offs: Six spin-off series were conceived for the series while it was on the air originally, but none came to fruition. The stories are part of Greg Weisman's "master plan" and will be told in the comic given enough issues. If the 'Bad Guys' spin-off comic is successful, it will be succeeded by other mini-series in 2008 and 2009.

And More: Greg Weisman has been answering questions most days for ten years on Ask Greg; there's an FAQ, a topic-by-topic index and a search function if you want to look up all sorts of things about the characters, the history of the gargoyle universe, some of his plans (which may be spoilerish now there's the comic to tell stories). There's also an annual convention, called the Gathering.

Kerry (Kth) Boyd> I borrowed my friend's copy of the original He-man from the '80s and watched two or three episodes and deemed the rest of the box set unwatchable. It's really sad. It took so little to amuse us when we were younger, and now it really doesn't capture any interest, at least for me.

I own the Legend of Zelda DVD collection and that was slightly difficult to watch too.

Hi to all,
I was a huge Gargoyle fan when it was on the TV and when it finished I thought that was the end of it. After digging through my friends video collection the other day I discovered the first few episodes and so indulged myself. And thus, my appreciation returned! So imagine my surprise to find that, after scouring t'internet, Gargoyles had continued in comic form! Hurrah!
Now here's the dilemma: I have no idea where to start! Are there definitive seasons? Spin-offs? How long have I been gone? Where to I begin reading? Can I even get the comics in the UK?
I need some serious guidance here people, so any help would be much appreciated.

A problem with my shipment today. Instead of Gargoyles Season 2 Part 2, I got the old Gargoyles movie. That really cheezy horror flick from the 70s. There is no return address. Do I just write "To God C/O Gabriel Heaven"? Don't I need a zip code? What is Heaven's zip code? I knew I should have been more specific when I ordered the DVD. All I said was, "God, can you please send me the Gargoyles DVD." and that is what I got, I am willing to pay for the extra shipping cost because it was my fault, but I don't even know how to ship it back? Does God take carrier pigeon?

Don't knock on Death's door. Ring his doorbell and run, he hates that.

Vaevictis Asmadi: All I was trying to point out was that theories change. If you compared an old black and white dinosaur movie to the present theories on Dinosaurs then wouldn't you laugh at how stupid Dinosaurs were portayed..

As it is I was only trying to point out that the Dinosaurs in JP have about as much in common with real Dinosaurs as Delilah has with Elisa(I hope you've read what Greg W. has said about Delilah's genes). The movie JP was nothing more then a theme park with custom made Dinos.

It's silly. It's a silly movie. There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?- George Lucas on Spider-Man 3

So, anyway, a DVD just fell from the sky. At first I was excited and then I found out it was "King of the Hill, Season One." God is either f**king with me again (since he knows, or in theory he's supposed to know, that I think Hank Hill is one of the unfunniest characters on TV), or else he's gone senile. Anyone else had this problem?

Concerning dinosaurs: Hell, I can remember when I first went to the Natural History museum as a kid, the tyrannosaurus was upright. And then they finally updated it in the mid-90s after the "ancestors of modern-day birds" theory became more popular.

As far as Jonny is concerned, I sincerely doubt he's mentally handicapped. If he were, the little bastard would have taken me seriously when I posted in his Facebook profile that Greg Weisman said Disney would release Season Two, Volume Two if a mass suicide took place in the Gargs fandom. Between that, and what he said on myspace after Greg posted his response yesterday, Jonny's just a troll.

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Dinosaurs>> It's unfortunate that we only have bones to work with for the most part, but I applaud the scientists who are working like mad to study what we've got so minutely. They've produced a lot more information that I'd have thought possible with just fossil evidence, but a lot of it is still open to interpretation. I'm also glad they've gravitated away from the "everything has to do with predator/prey relationships" mentality that was prevalent until relatively recently. Opening up people's thinking to intraspecies communication, display, courtship, and parenting makes them much more real, and paints a better picture of life back then.

I do think it's kind of silly that predators are pigeon-holed into hunter and scavenger, when almost nothing is purely one or the other. When "hunters" miss, or come across carrion when hungry, they scavenge; when there's no carrion, "scavengers" hunt. There's evidence that a hadrosaur was attacked by a rex and survived long enough to heal from the injury, so I would say that they hunted at least sometimes.

Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [kth dot dragon at gmail dot com]

Vinnie > Just because new discoveries are made all the time, doesn't mean that all of our existing knowledge of dinosaurs is automatically false.
A theory is not a "guess" or a "conjecture." A theory is a model of the observations that has been has been tested and tested and supported by existing evidence. Furthermore, most of the time theories are modified and tweaked slightly to better model the world as new evidence is discovered. It is quite rare for an established, well-supported theory to be thrown out all together.

As I've mentioned before, I've been putting together the Gargoyles Music Video Database (GMVD)- an attempt to collect Gargoyles music videos together in one user friendly place to benifit viewers and editors alike. Now, due to a series of comical mail mix ups, I have two Gargoyles Season 1 DVDs as well as two copies of each of the first five issues of the Gargoyles comic.

I would love the GMVD to host a music video competition with my extras as prizes, but I have concerns about participation. Would any Gargoyles editors who frequent s8 be interested in this competition (even though most of you already have these items)? The contest would be a way to spread publicity about the Database as well as give folks a sort of "practice run" for G'08, but no one wants a complicated endeavor like this to blow up in their face with three entries or something. The winners would likely be determined by in depth/frame by frame reviews and critiques of submissions and an average of scores in several different areas (concept, organization, attention to music, overall, etc) done by myself and/or volunteer judges.

Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated, on any front. Feasibility of the project, appropriate contest length, general interest, etc etc.

Their are some scientists that believe T-Rex wasn't a hunter but a scavenger using it's sense of smell to search for already animals. To paraphrase Alan Grant they aren't real dinosaur they are theme park monstrosities really dinos are dead and buried in the ground.
Besides I suspect anyone skilled enough to make those animals would also attempt to emphasize(or deemphasize)certain charateristics to wow the any vistors and rack in the bigger bucks.

On TGC: I'm not really a fan of the Timdancer concept but could you imagine the looki on Brooklyn's face if he was deposited in an that only remembered the clans struggles through a Hollywood mockumentary like TGC.

<<<aj writes...
hey greg,
i thought angela had a thing for brooklyn why does she end up with broadway>>>

And the answer is:
<<<We were never hinting toward Brooklyn/Angela. Quite the reverse. Gary Sperling and I made this decision together when he was working on Turf. But it just felt right. Broadway seemed the guy who was most attentive to Angela as an individual. The person most in touch with his so-called feminine side. Brooklyn was just after any chick with wings, frankly. And I think Lex pursued her because his brothers were and it seemed like the right thing to do. Only Broadway was interested in who Angela was. In my mind, he's clearly the most mature when it comes to this stuff. Brooklyn's a leader. And I love the guy, but he confuses a crush with deep abiding love. He needs a little more emotional maturity before he's ready for this "Gargoyles mate for life" thing.>>>

Or if you prefer you could use this answer:
<<<Angela and Brooklyn were NEVER an "item". NEVER. Brooklyn certainly had a crush on her. But so did Lex and Broadway. And Broadway's feelings for her were deeper almost from the night they met. And if you caught the look they exchanged at the end of "Possessions" you would have seen that the only "item" in works was Angela & Broadway.>>>

16 days from today is . . . the 4 month anniversary of Greg Weisman doing Today In Gargoyle Universe History. At that point, he will have covered approximately 1/3 of the dates in the year. Remember Greg Weisman started on May 4.

I noticed slg didn't release any new comics this week.

I'm going to assume the gathering 2008 staff is aware of Jonny Modlin and will take appropriate action should he register for next year's gathering.

61 questions left in the backlog. Not bad, considering that included gathering journals.

Hey gang,

Some catching up to do.

1.: I don't know if this has been done or discussed, but shouldn't we doo sort of a timeline of Gregs "THIS DAY IN GARG UNIVERSEHISTORY"?? I know he's being cryptic, but it might add up to some nice discussion! Goliath is forced into hiding - what for? This is 8 years after the re-awakening, why then? Murder suspect? Racism?
The same with Lex choice and the Vinnie post... and the french corpse... A timeline would be both informatic and would lead to new discussion IMHO...

2.: Film - I'm a HUGHE film buff, and I've got to confess that i'd love to see an arthouse-director taking the task. SURE, they might "change" it, but from my pov tere are three waysof doing comic-films:

1: The 1:1, examples are Sin City and 300, I'd also include Spiderman and X-Men, sine those had major changes but stayed true to the coics.
2: The veteran/arthouse director pressing their own stamp on it. Burtans and Nolans Batman come to mind, and both have been brilliant IMHO, Burton as an expressionist, Nolan as an impressionist. Although characters and setting wer alteed, the film itself stayed true to it's origins, and, in both interpretations, kicked ass!!
However, signing somebody like Jackson or Spielberg as the director might really destroy it. Whoever read ANY Philip K Dick novel and saw Miority Report will understand me - Spielberg doesn't adapt, he's completely rewriting and pulling off a by-the-numbers, sometimes with good, sometimes with rather bad outcome, but never being really unique. Jackson mightbe interresting, but IMHO way too sensationalistic in the moment, way too occupied with size rather than depth.
One more thing: I saw STUCK yesterday, the new film of Stuart Gordon (director of Re-Animator an other b-movie horror classics), and it was absoluely amazing! So why have Jackson, when one could have one of those veteran Horror directors, who know what they're doing, have a unique style and love character development? Cronenberg, Argento, Romero, Carpenter, Craven... Even though I hated Red Eye, it'd be interrestig to see Craven handle it...
3: The puppet. Now and then, studio execs get around to hire a drector to handle a comic adaptation, mostly with BAD resuslts. Daredevil. Constantine. Catwoman. Fantastic Four. Seriousy, those say around for a week and then fade into oblivion, and that is the last thing I'd like Gargs to see.

3: Any guesses yet who's Illuminatis 1#??
*coughdemonacough*?
Have we got a list with confirmed non-1#s??

So, that's it for now.
Cheers.

Incisivis - It's been a while since I watched the movie version, but the dialogue changes I recall:
1: When the trio leave the castle to go after the discs for Xanatos - You hear Goliath say "God Seed Lads" - then I believe there's some dialogue between Goliath and Demona right after that which differs from the TV version.
2: When Hudson retrieves the disc and is running through the screened in section of the subway tunnel-he spots the subway coming and says something like "any old port in a storm"-and proceeds to rip open the fence and jump on the subway with Bronx.
3: When Goliath & Demona are in the airship and he grabs the the ships captain by the collar - the captain says "wh-o-what are you"-to which you hear Goliath reply "Your Worst Nightmare"(that's removed from the TV version)
4: When Broadway rips open the door to the tower to retrieve the disc with Brooklyn & Lex-in the TV version he says "No Problem"-he says something different in the movie version-I just don't recall what. There may be others, I just don't recall any off the top of my head.

As for the soud effects, they're less "In your face" - much more subtle than the 5 part TV version. If i remember correctly, Greg W actually had involvement in the audio mix for the movie version.

Hope that helps some

I am throwing in an OT vote in favour of "Raptor Red". I recognize that Bakker might have gone a little overboard in his humanizing of the dinosaur characters, but it's so entertaining, and I'm somewhat attached to his view of dinosaurs, that I'm willing to forgive a little. It helps that I'm more interested in dinosaurs as and aesthetic concept rather than from a hard science viewpoint, though I've done some reading in my time.

Wingless: The sound effects difference are too much to categorize, but are there any dialogue differences in "The Heroes Awaken" that you think are noteworthy? The first Jurassic Park had moments that I liked, but I'll always prefer the book. "The Lost World" was just written so that Spielberg could make the movie. Hey, it turns out Malcolm was just in a coma. Could have fooled me. And even though we all saw eggs incubating on Isla Nublar, it turns out that they had a completely different island for raising new dinosaurs. Riiiiight.

I never saw "Jurassic Park III," but when I saw the trailer, for some reason, I was reminded of Sam Neill's character in "Event Horizon" (which was a far more enjoyable movie than both the Jurassic Parks I saw).

"We can't leave the island... She won't let us..."

Concerning Goliath's "suicide": I don't really believe in fate in real life, but in the Gargoyles universe, considering what's gone on since their awakening, perhaps the clan is where they were meant to be. But it is still an intriguing question. I'm not sure how it might ever come up, or how the thought might enter Angela's mind. Demona probably wouldn't say anything, since she has her own twisted slant on things concerning that night.

A thought that I had about some of the more infamous elements of "The Goliath Chronicles". We know that, after Greg left, Disney hired a mostly new production team that didn't have much familiarity with "Gargoyles" (and didn't have much time to develop it). They did, however, probably have some past experience with other super-hero cartoons, with a more conventional set-up than "Gargoyles", and might well have been influenced by them.

As an example, I'll discuss the role of Xanatos. The new production team's decision to have him genuinely reformed may not be so strange if they were going for the notion that "bad guys are the people who are trying to do in the heroes". Since Xanatos was no longer directly at odds with the gargoyles, the production team probably couldn't see how to have him engage in villainous schemes. (What they were overlooking, of course, was that the gargoyles were the means rather than the ends in Xanatos's schemes - what he was really after was increasing his wealth and power and gaining immortality, and just decided to use the gargoyles to help him achieve those goals. Just because he's now letting them stay in the castle doesn't mean that he's abandoned those goals. Incidentally, the last time that Goliath and Xanatos clashed in the television series, Xanatos was after Coyote the Trickster and hadn't even expected the gargoyles to get involved.)

On the World Tour- I guess I should preface my comments on the World Tour by saying that I got into the series when it was rerunning at 9:00 on Toon Disney. For many series (especially one focusing on the actions of a group/team/clan of characters), the world tour would have been a risky direction to go off in. A big bag of episodes that leaves four of the main characters behind to sit at home? That was part of the reason so many fans couldn't enjoy the final season of Teen Titans. Somehow though, Gargoyles pulled the move off. It certainly helped that the series had Goliath and Goliath's relationship with Elisa as a focus- those characters left behind didn't have nearly the story-telling weight/importance of Goliath. If Goliath and Elisa had been the ones left behind and the trio had gone off on their own.. *holds reservations for upcoming Road Trip*

Anyway, watching the series now, I love the expanded universe that we got to see in the world tour. As others have mentioned, we certainly got a much more positive picture for gargoyles' survival and future with humanity. We were given enough time to really get to know the wonderful character of Angela (who could only be a bonus to the cast) as well as the opportunity to see yet another side of the Awakening story. The sheer number of complex connections Greg and co pulled out of their hat with these episodes is astounding (Demona/Macbeth/Weird Sisters, Demona/Thailog set up, The Gathering setup+Fox's family history, the phoenix gate, on and on and on and on).

The only thing I was unhappy about in the world tour was the unreliable animation quality. When it was good, it was REALLY good (Shadows of the Past, MIA, Future Tense). But when it was bad... Perhaps this is an annoyance particular to me, since one of my main interest in Gargoyles is in making music videos. The stories presented in Avalon and The Gathering would be so great to use, but so often the footage is simply unusable.

The World Tour produced three of my favorite episodes: MIA, Shadows of the Past, and Future Tense. (I just love those time warp/past returns.phoenix gate tragedies, don't I?) Those episodes, along with Awakening and The Mirror, were the stories and the people I remembered when I was reintroduced to the series I had been in love with a few years ago. Those are the stories I love watching, sharing, and retelling, and I think it would be next to impossible for anyone to watch those episodes and not fall in love with the series.

Spoonvonstup - [<--- Alone- Demona/Goliath tribute]

Tony-I think you missed something. Goliath chose to be turned to stone by the Magus. He could have stayed alive and raised the eggs alone if he wanted to. As Gore said-and I said), Goliath made the choice - both out of grief and the fact that, as leader he failed to protect his clan, and his protectorate(the castle & those in it). I think both of those played on his decision at the time, especially the later. I'm not saying it was the right decision, even though it did work out in the end(in a warped sort of way). It still leaves me wondering what the Avalon clan thinks - and if we'll see the question come up.
Wingless

I'm sure the subject of asking Goliath why he made the decision that he did 1000 years ago isn't pressing on Angela's mind or in the back of it.

If the Magus didn't put the Gargoyles in stone sleep, then Goliath and Angela would have never met in the future, then he wouldn't have been alive in the future to save them from the Archmage.

Everything happens for a reason, and I'm sure Angela was taught this lesson on Avalon by those that raised her. She didn't grow up angry, cold, or full of hatred that her father chose to abandon her before birth. But like I said above, if he didn't abandon her then, he wouldn't have been around in 1995 to save her.

Ding: I just got a copy of that as well. I was reading up on LDs a bit and they say the audio quality off an LD is better than DVDs because it's analogue (lacking in artifacts arising from compression). Kind of interesting. But, like you, I lack a player. Although I plan to pick one up on e-bay soon, they seem to be fairly cheap for a decent one.

As for Goliath's "suicide", I'd think that'd be a very very tough discussion for him, perhaps bordering on the same weight as Demona confronting her own actions in the destruction of Wyvern and her clan. I think he probably made his decision while caught up in the devastation of his loss rather than making the choice with a clear head. With a clear head I would suspect he'd feel a sense of duty to try, regardless of how impossible it might seem, to care for the eggs.

Even though Angela and the others don't seem to hold it against Goliath, I bet it's a question Angela has in the back of her head and will eventually ask.

Gorebash - [gorebash at s8 dot org]

As an added not to my previous msg. I just added to my gargoyles merchandise collection. Got a Laserdisc copy of "Gargoyles-the movie". Considering my tape is getting old, I figure I'd get a more permanent copy of the movie version-being that it does have some exclusive dialogue not in the TV version-not to mention a different audio sound F/X mix. Now, the fact I don't have a player is a problem-although I do know someone that does.

There's a nice book by Robert T. Bakker called "Raptor Red" featuring a Utahraptor as the main character.
Anonymous

Demon@> Deinonychus were bigger, yes, but still about half man-size. Only Utahraptor were that big (since Megaraptor has been found to be a carnosaur), and they were discovered just in time for the movie. They were a bit over 6 ft tall and up to 22 ft long, and may have weighed as much as 1500 pounds. Not sure why Crichton named his "velociraptor" or why Spielberg kept it. Perhaps the official naming of Utahraptor hadn't gone through yet.

Incisivis> Agreed. The message was too strong, and however smart they might have been, by JP 3 it had just gotten ridiculous. I also agree with your opinion of a Gargoyles movie. It would need to be animated, either traditionally or CGI; live action would cheapen the magic of the series in my opinion.

Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [kth dot dragon at gmail dot com]

Wow, I have a lot to reply to. Let's go:

I know that it's in the toilet anyway, but if it were a remote possibility, I wouldn't be interested in a Gargoyles live-action movie. I feel that animation is a more authentic representation of fantasy, and making a fantasy cartoon live-action is a step *down*. So, no proposed "dream director" from me.

The Goliath Chronicles was a pretty icky concept, but it would be petty for Weisman to stick a little slam against it into the comic. He would look like the bigger man if he just forgot about TGC. I know nobody is saying that he's doing it, but that's what I feel about the *concept* of such.

The World Tour was a very mixed bag for me. I liked the mythological references and the new gargoyle clans, and some of the episodes' general plots, but sometimes they fell into a stereotypically "Disney" scenario, when modernism and technology was cast as misguided or evil, and everyone learns a lesson in the end. Part of that's to do with the simplicity needed for self-contained episodes, but I disliked it anyway. I'm looking forward to the Coldstone issue of the comic, though, as long as it doesn't include a dissatisfied monk learning to accept his destiny in it or something :P

Well, I loved the *dinosaurs* in the JP movies, but was bored with everything else. I had what they were trying to say about not controlling nature, but that...that's been done already. And the raptors were too large and too smart, and this is coming from a big fan of dromaeosaurs. It's not canon to Chrichton, but the pteranodons in the third movie were also too powerful.

I did read the novel versions of JP and TLW, but wasn't attached enough to care about the changes...except that the orignal novel version of Sarah Harding was much cooler.

Vaevictis> The herbivores? That must've been The Lost World. Still, that kind of thing is silly; at least have the carnivores after the people. Dino speed is tricky since you can't always tell exactly what species made tracks, and the math to calculate speed has to include the animal's leg height as well as stride length. And the dilophosaur was definitely mostly wrong; they weren't that small, for one, and if they were toxic at all, I think it far more likely that they'd have septic saliva like komodo dragons do (and forego the spitting). Lucky for the original movie that Utahraptor was discovered during pre-production, or we'd have had to say the raptors were too big too. LOL

Kerry >> It is the latest issue of Discover. Dr. Horner said that all the plant-eating dinosaurs were running around trying to eat humans, and all the dinosaurs ran much faster than they were capable of. I also know that there's no evidence that dilophosaurs had extra bones in their necks like a frill-neck lizard.

Regarding movies, although some amount of adaptation and change is always necessary to adapt a book to the screen, I don't think it is necessary to greatly change the personalities of characters until they are barely recognizable, or to change the story to create nonsensical situations, as Todd(?) pointed out in the Lord of the Rings.

"For every complex problem, there is a solution which is simple, easy, and wrong."

Vid The Kid - Re TGC and Nelvana. Yes Nelvana Did produce SOME of TGC episodes, but like has been stated before, Disney decided on the third season so late in the game for a fall Saturday Morning schedule for ABC that Nelvana didn't have time to produce them all-so(if I remember correctly) the last 3 episodes of TGC were done at other studios(most notibly "Seeing Isn't Believing" which I think was done at Disney Australia.

On another subject, I was thinking about Goliath's decision to be turned to stone along with the Trio, Hudson & Bronx. Something I would like to see is have him confronted by one of the Avalon clan(Maybe even Angela) about why he chose to essentially commit suicide rather than stay alive and raise his children. Not in a combative way, mind you, just to have him deal with the question from one of his own. I feel maybe Goliath felt that he had failed his clan as a leader and figured his children might have a better chance without him(a rash decision certainly - but gargoyles are very proud - especially Goliath - and his failure to protect the castle and his own clan from being wiped out - it was the worst scenario a gargoyle leader can face.

Your thoughts.

Jurassic Park> Don't get me wrong, John Williams score was BRILLIANT, and the Dinosaurs COULD NOT have been done better, but the actual story was butchered from the book. I do love the score and the way the dinosaurs came out, but without a good story...

GREG B.> SPR> Yes, the first part was exceptional. The rest of it, finding Ryan was weaker. Still, I thought it was better than Shakespeare in Love, Even though I too love the film. (Thanks to Gargoyles, (in particular Brooklyn saying "A Midsumemr Night's Dream") I got hooked on Shakespeare).

I do like "Shakespeare in Love" and I thought it was a terrific fictiojal account of the bard.

As for Tom Cruise> I have lost a lot of respect for him lately and his "scientology is the best" crap. iF you follow that religion, I am really not bashing it. Just Tom Cruise.

HOWEVER> I do like Jerry McGuire, Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July, his best films. If you see the latter, you'd never think it was him. As for Rain MAn, Hoffman steals the show.

Other than those, does he have another good film?

ISSUE #6> When is it out?

Battle Beast - [Canada]
That is all I will say.

I like Shakespeare in Love.

Jurassic Park was OK, I only watched it a long time ago. The special effects were awesome, but I recently read an article where a palaeontologists was saying that the portrayal of the dinosaurs was pretty inaccurate.

I love the World Tour. I didn't watch Gargoyles regularly as a kid, so the timing wasn't an issue for me. But watching it now, I really like it. It brings hope back to the gargoyles' world, and I love the way it expands the world and adds so much more to the scope of the setting. Plus, I love seeing new gargoyle clans and how they differ in appearance and customs from the Wyvern/Manhattan clans. I like thinking that gargoyles still have a chance to survive despite humanity's persecution (and even better knowing they'll last at least until 2198).

Plus, stuff like Avalon and King Arthur and werepanthers and the various Children of Oberon is fun for me. I've always preferred the fantasy elements of gargoyles to the superhero and scifi parts, and the World Tour focuses more on the fantasy.

I love JP in both mediums. Although the movie is not a great book adaptation, as a movie it's one of my favorites. Seeing dinosaurs so alive was just mind-boggling, and even though it fits into the "monster movie" category, there were attempts to portray that they were just animals. (there were more, but they ended up on the cutting room floor. not enough time)

The story in the book is better, and even though it was a bit of a jolt to find out how different some of the characters were, I got used to it. Crichton definitely does "everything's going okay until..." stories well. It'd be nice if the book -> movie transition didn't have to include an adaptation, but the two mediums are so different that it's an unfortunate necessity. Some things that make great reading make terrible movies, and vice versa.

I liked the original Jurassic Park. Seeing those dinosaurs on the big screen that first time was jaw dropping. The soundtrack was great. The kids were annoying, but that's what they're suppose to be. I read the book after I saw the movie and preferred the book, but the movie still entertains. The second.. meh. Although the whole T. Rex running around San Diego was quite a bit of fun. By the third you'd think everyone would get it. Dinosaurs = bad. But I did like the pterodactyls finally getting some significant screen time.

I was browsing various Wikipedia articles a few minutes ago and I wound up reading the article on Nelvana. Among a description of several TV shows and movies they did -- some of which were never even finished -- there doesn't seem to be any mention of Gargoyles:TGC on there. Didn't they produce that?

I'll go a couple steps farther and say that not only did I love the Jurassic Park movie, I loved both sequels as well! Mostly 'cause I love the heck out of dinosaurs, especially raptors.

Liked the first book well enough, but the second was crap and marked for me the beginning of Michael Crichton's period of "hey now I'm famous I can phone it in" suckage.

Not a Tom Cruise fan either.

In regards to adapting Gargoyles to the big screen, as Greg B. said earlier, even if Greg W. was involved more directly in the process, there'd still be an adaptation. It took a little reading, but way back in 2000, when things looked more promising for the film, Greg had posted a little background about the work on the potential film and a general idea of how the treatment would be. You can read here: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=110

Tony> I remember, don't worry, we won't get into that again. :)

Yes, I am serious about the new leaf I'm turning.

Battle Beast> Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. I'll refrain from my thoughts on the former, suffice it to say, I thought "Nuit et brouillard" aka "Night and Fog" was really powerful, very scary, and made me angry, depressed and nauseous all at the same time. As for SPR... well, I thought the first few minutes were very well done. The rest, um... er. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan.

Yeah, that year I supported "Shakespeare In Love", a film which I loved. Still do love.

I LOVED Jurassic Park -- John Williams music and beautifully animated dinosaurs. I saw that movie countless times in the theater and loved it each time. I'm a huge dinosaurs fan. I'm also a huge John Williams fan. And I'm not a huge book fan, as you may or may not know.

Something I figured I'd ask, given the next Gargoyles issue. What was your overall opinion on the Avalon World Tour?

I myself was hoping we would see them getting to Manhattan soon, but the episodes were still enjoyable nonetheless. And it really does make a difference being able to see the episodes at a more reasonable pace, since when they originally aired, we got cut off inbetween. As I stated on Adamrulz comment page, Avalon Part 3 would have made a better break point.

Of course, with the current stories and Bad Guys, the stories will have more payoff storywise.

I'll admit that I HATE Jurassic park (The movie) and I LOVE the book (one of my favs.)

Spielburgh butchered the books.

I've only seen the movie a few times. Is Professor Malcom the one who said "I've just finished debuging the phone for you Dave".

Let's not also forget that Professor Malcolm went from being one of the most insightful characters in the book into the comic relief in the movie.

Vaevictis> Thing is, and this is not just a LOTR thing, it's when anything is adapted from another medium into a movie. There are always, always changes.

Funny thing, or sad thing, depending on what your POV thing, is that, in the grand scheme of things, what PJ did was one of the most faithful adaptions of a book to a movie.

Jurassic Park... PJ has nothing on Spielberg when it comes to changing plot and characters. The old man in the book who ran the park, was a greedy, immoral bastard who didn't care at all about his grandchildren. In the movie, there was a line about how he wanted admission to his park to be affordable for everyone to see the dinosaurs. In the book, he comes out and says with glee that only the "rich ones" will enjoy this. He dies at the end of the book too.

Even if Greg Weisman was in charge of the movie, things would be changed.

Happy birthday, Todd!

Concerning movies, Peter Jackson directed some stunning visuals for the LotR movies, but I would prefer a "Gargoyles" director who won't change the plot and characters from how the author wrote them. I mean, "Gargoyles" has already had that unfortunate experience once.

I don't know if Greg remembers enough about TGC to make references to it, which is understandable as he made the choice to watch them once.

An injoke I made up for it would be for someone to be reading a self help book, written by Egon Pax. Or the Gargoyles talking about an upcoming election refering to some guy named Pat Doyle.

Greg B.> Have you seen Schindler's list? Or Private Ryan? Universally regarded as Spielberg's best films. And they are. I TOTALLY dissagree with you about Spielberg. But I do agree that he's the WRONG guy to direct Gargoyles. Totally.

Sorry about the double post, but I posted an incomplete thought.

I don't know what Xanatos's plan is, but once people hear that they were conversing with real Gargoyles during his Halloween Bash, then I foresee that it is going to shatter a lot of egos and change a lot of perceptions.

I think we have a while before Greg Weisman decides to introduce the Gargoyles to the world. I would think that part of Xanatos's plan is to have the Gargoyles accepted into society by a smaller group of people first, i.e. all those at his Halloween party, and see how they handle the news. Then once word gets out and the Gargoyles become part of the regular media, then I could see Hollywood getting involved.

Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.

"The Goliath Chronicles" as a Hollywood-distorted version of what really happened after "Hunter's Moon"? It certainly sounds amusing (though I doubt that, the way things currently are in the Gargoyles Universe according to the comic, they'd be making it for a while yet - not until the public have had more opportunity to find out the truth about the gargoyles, enough to make a treatment of them as noble beings facing persecution from bigotry plausible from the box office's point of view).

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

8, 9, 10! And away we go on with the show finally.

I'm curious if anyone thinks Greg W. will include TGC somehow in the comic book? You could easily say that Hollywood contracted a TV series about the Gargoyles struggles with the Quarrymen. And whenever Hollywood does a documentary of any kind it's always(how shall I put this) heavily edited/revised so much from what really happened.
