Greg B> I've heard the line elsewhere, just that "The Urkel Show" was where I first heard of it, but the horizon expansion is something I'm working on.

Asatira> Happy Birthday to you.

Antiyonder

Antiyonder> Than you need to expand your horizons. "I'm wearing her down" is a line bordering on cliche long before this show and that horrible Urkel show.

Algernon> I hear there will be a few different SS line ups, but hopefully Sandman and Rhino would have a more solo team up as they were already partners in crime.

Greg B> The comparision was just something I was doing for fun. On that note, I too am similar to Bill Clinton (at least half way. That and my nickname starts with the letter B). My first comparison was mostly cause I haven't heard the dialogue "I'm wearing her down" too often.

HoE> To argue that both have a favorite food seems to say that we're all like Spider-Man and Urkel.

I was scrapping at the bottom of the barrel for that to be honest. But hopefully everyone is more similar to Pete (minus the spider-powers) than Urkel.

Tony > Yeah, I'd love to get a DVR. Hopefully I'll be able to get one when I move out of my current apartment.

ANTIYONDER> "How's that?"

Bill Clinton likes cigars. I like cigars.
Bill Clinton has a favorite food. I have a favorite food.
Bill Clinton has a brother. I have a brother.
Bill Clinton knows how to drive. I know how to drive.
Bill Clinton knows someone named Robert. I know someone named Robert.
Bill Clinton's father is dead. My father is dead.

By your logic, I am a lot like Bill Clinton!

Don't knock on Death's door. Ring his doorbell and run, he hates that.

Meh, I don't see much of a point comparing and contrasting the two. But each to his own, I guess.

It's interesting, though. To argue that both have a favorite food seems to say that we're all like Spider-Man and Urkel.

HoE: Not intended as a parallel between them actually. But since you brought it up:

- They both end up with a sterotypical unobtainable girl.
- One wore Spider-Armor, the other made Urkelbot.
- They both know someone named Eddie.
- They both have a distinctly different clone (Ben and Stefan).
- Both have their favorite foods (cheese and wheatcakes).
- They've had moments where two girls fought over them.

How's that?

Antiyonder: Curious parallel you came up with. I just hope it doesn't invoke an image in my mind of Peter Parker with his pants pulled up around his armpits. Then we might have a problem. ( ;

"Yes! I'm wearing her down!": That line gave me a flashback to Family Matters, specifically Steve Urkel and Laura Winslow.

Overall, I have to say that the set up between Peter and MJ was better then the comics, simply because of May's "Evil Mastermind" approach.

As far as villain team ups go, I wonder if Alex and Flint will try working together once more, if only to see how they interact with each other post transformation.

As a general rule, I pretty much never wake up in time to watch SSM on TV, so I have to catch it on youtube a day or so later. I'm very grateful to the users who upload it so I can watch it.

Anyway, I don't have anything to add about this episode that hasn't already been said. It was a great episode, and even though I never read any of the old comics, it's nice to hear that the show is being true to them.

And, I kind of agree with Demonskyre's sentiment about Spidey's victories. If this pattern continues, it COULD start to feel formulaic. I hope in future episodes, we'll see a little variation.

Rebel

**Possible TSS-M SPOILERS**
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the full epiosde yet, just the second half for a variety of reasons that culminated in me sleeping in (sigh). But I entered just as Spidey was getting whooped by the Rhino and Spidey figuring out that the steam tunnel would do the trick.

So yeah, without repeating what everyone's said, it was a great episode for the several things already mentioned.

And I too, listened to the podcast last night, and I couldn't help but think that when Greg joked about what he was planning for season five, that he MAY have been just a tad serious. :P

Phoenician
"The Suspense is Terrible . . . I Hope it Lasts" -- Willy Wonka

POSSIBLE SSM SPOILERS

Can't think of too much to add that wouldn't be repeating what others have said. But something I've been thinking about, especially since they used a classic line to introduce Mary Jane Watson.

I know that in the third episode, Peter chose not to take the serum that might rid him of his powers, but he also didn't throw it out. One thing I do remember in the comics was Peter Parker taking a serum to try and rid himself of his powers because he was in love with someone. I wonder if we'll see something similar in the cartoon (though hopefully it won't give him six arms).

I'm liking the interplay between Norman Osborn and Hammerhead more and more. I too have to wonder if Osborn and Octavius will be having it out soon. On Otto's latest creation, he didn't even think to account for properly ventilating the suit.

Asatria> Happy Birthday! Hope it's a great one!

Demonskrye> It appears we're on the same page concerning Transformers. As long as the show keeps it's current pace, then hopefully it won't fall into the mire that other shows do. I didn't know Jeff Bennett was the voice of Ultra Magnus, and of course, with his talent, I'm not surprised.

Kris> I was able to obtain the entire Second season so I'll complete it and go back to Season 1 after I obtain that one. I have a feeling I'll like S1 better than S2, but right now, coupled with the fact of curiosity, I'm going to watch a good chuck of them today.

Not too much to add. I've been enjoying TSS-M, and the latest was a lot of fun.

****SPOILER*****

I enjoyed the latest episode, and I'm one of those who's interested in the personal side of Parker's life, more so than the Spidey side. I enjoyed Aunt May's manipulation. She knows exactly how to kill a relationship with only a few words. I was actually hoping they'd hold off on bringing in Mary Jane for a little longer, but she was brought in a pretty good way. Love the inclusion of her famous intro line; perfect. And I'm curious about what's up with Harry. He left Osborne's office with a rather suspicious/calculated look. Like he may know more than he's letting on.

Nice way to bring the current arc to a conclusion. I was afraid the show would be sent into rerun limbo before getting here.

Rhino was cool in this episode. While we all prefer the more complex villains it's important to remember that the "Big Dumb Thug" fills an important niche in any hero's rogues gallery. Sometimes a story is better served by a Jackal or Hyena then it is by a Xanatos or Demona. Plus we almost have enough bad guys for the Sinister Six

It was great to see Tombstone, though like Greg B. I'm not entirely sure whether he's the real deal or just some kind of front or decoy for the real Big Man. I would not be surprised if it turned out that Osborn and Hammerhead deliberately dropped Mr. Lincoln's name to throw Rhino of the scent.

Back on the Peter Parker front our hero is running around like a headless chicken trying to get a date for the fall formal. Pete tries to tempt Betty with a bit of cradle robbing. I'm actually kind of surprised they got away with that in this day and age.

I really like Aunt May in this series, she's a far cry from her traditional depiction as a senile old bat who has a heart attack every time someone sneezes.

We get more from Norman and Otto here while Hammerhead starts leaning on Norm. I think I may have figured out how Otto becomes Dr. Octopus in this series. I suspect that Norman will try to off Otto in order to cover up his involvement with the Big Man's Supervillain factory. He'll probably try to sabotage Otto's equipment, triggering an explosion he hopes will look like an accident.

Hooray far Mary Jane! Count me as another who firmly believes that she is The One for Peter, I just wish I knew what she did to piss off Marvel's editorial staff so much.

On a related note I caught the first half of the Spider-Man Crawl Space podcast with Greg Weisman and Joss Keaton. Some very interesting tidbits there…

Greg has the series planed out as far as season 3.

Season 2 will feature adaptations of the Master Planner and Gang War storylines from the comics.

Scorpion and Hobgoblin debuting in season 3.

Greg master plan is to do 65 episodes leading up to Peter's high school graduation, then move on to DTVs featuring Spidey's college years and more mature storylines.

Mephisto will NOT appear in the show and a sigh of relief was heard from all.

SPECTACULAR SPIDER SPOILERS

You know the drill.

Really good episode, and I agree it's one of the best fight scenes yet. Huge kudos to the crew on the art side of the show for making all of Spidey's battles feel so unique. Poor Peter really takes a beating this round and you feel every hit. My only concern is that the "Bad guy pummels Spidey; Spidey notices his weakness; Spidey finds a clever way to exploit that weakness" plot is starting to feel a little bit like a formula. I know using his brains is one of the things that makes Spidey unique, but I'd like to see an episode here and there where Spidey just drops a big rock on someone's head to defeat him and the villain in question isn't clearly weak against big rocks.

I imagine the Rhino will have some kind of colling system added to his skin/armor next time we see him, or all Spidey's going to need to take him down is a portable sun lamp.

I'm also enjoying the portrayal of Dr. Octavius here: a weak-willed scientist with just a hint of a conscience. It's going to be interesting to see what changes him psychologically to make him one of Spider-Man's most formidable foe's.

"Yes! I'm wearing her down!" Perfect Peter dealing with women line.

I was kind of thinking over the break that we'd see a nod to the scene in the first movie where Jameson actually does the right thing when threatened by a supervillain and protects Peter's identity. I was glad to see I was right. Jonah may be a self-centered raging tyrant of a man, but he does have his redeeming qualities.

For those keeping score, the credits confirmed my suspicion that the white-haired detective is George Stacy, Gwen's dad. Guess he hasn't made captain yet.

What's with Harry being so happy about once again getting the brush-off from his dad? I can only imagine we'll find out next week.

Aunt May's "scheme" was a lot of fun. The best Spider-Man writers have been able to show that Aunt May is actually the solid foundation of Peter's life, not a weight constantly dragging him down. You get a sense of it in the movies and in issues of "Untold Tales of Spider-Man" and I hope we'll see some of it here. The idea that she has her own agenda for Peter's love life is a good start.

I'm a little surprised to see Aunt Anna's favorite niece arrive on the scene so soon. I thought we'd get a little more of Peter's bad luck in love and obliviousness to Gwen's feelings for him before the redhead bomb dropped. But I'm sure Greg knows what he's doing. It was good to see the old "Face it, tiger" intro, though I miss the pose of equal confidence Romita gave her in the original comic. (Click my name for MJ's debut.)

Another allusion to Uncle Ben's death, but still no outright explanation of it. Which is fine by me. Unless you've been living under a rock and he rock is in the middle of Antarctica and you only moved there because your previous rock in the middle of the Sahara desert didn't seem quite remote enough, you know Spider-Man's origin.

TRANS-SPOILERS, MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

I'm with you, Tony. TransFormers has been top-notch. I wish I could thank Jeff Bennett for his performance as Ultra Magnus, which made my husband so very happy. He's always amazing and his Robert Stack impression did not disappoint. With any other show, I'd worry that this episode is going to turn the series into a MacGuffin hunt like nearly every episode of the three previous TransFormers shows. But this show has been far too smart for that so far and I have confidence that the writers will continue to keep the quality high.

Anthony Tini >> I've watched DEXTER too and it's one of the best dramas on TV right now. I hope you didn't skip Season 1 just because your friends spoiled it for you. The performances alone are worth it, but the writing/lines, the mood, the look of the series, and the creepy music all make it worthwhile. Both of its two seasons (so far, it's been green-lighted for at least a third) are excellent. It's based on a series of books, there are three out so far, but the show diverged from them heavily after Season 1 and the author is thrilled with the results.

The main dude on it playing the title character, Michael C. Hall, was also a heavy duty dramatic actor with lots of comedy surrounding his character in the HBO series SIX FEET UNDER. Another must-watch series, it lasted for five seasons and is completely released on DVD. My favorite live-action drama ever, so far, it's a shame it didn't receive the same level of recognition as The Sopranos.

Between this and the two other boards I hang out at, there's a lot of Spectacular Spider-Man discussion floating about. Can't wait 'til it's on DVD. There are only a few worthwhile North American cartoons from this decade so far, but I've missed out on all of 'em (I wanna catch up on the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles eventually, I only saw the first two seasons and I've heard it only gets better). Would like to see the 2002 He-Man/Masters of the Universe series too now that it's out on DVD.

I'll vote for the Gargoyle comics on that furry site soon. Maybe see if I can watch some of those films before I do. Way behind on my kid flicks, especially the computer animated variety.

* SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN SPOILERS *

I liked this episode a lot. Rhino certainly proved a challenging opponent even if he was just a "big strong dumb guy" - at least, until Spidey had the idea of using the steam tunnels against him.

Tombstone's also a truly menacing character - all the more so because he's able to convince the police that Spidey's the one who needs to be arrested. I liked the line about "I'm not looking the other way again" (paraphrased from memory) - especially if it's referring to what I think it's referring to.

Another highlight: the scene near the end between Norman Osborn and Hammerhead. Just like Osborn to decide to make a profit out of incarcerating the super-villains as well as creating them. And Harry walks in on them and seems to be guessing something about what his dad's up to: I look forward to seeing where this leads. And to what's in store for Dr. Octavius (especially since I'm still intrigued by his portrayal as a meek, timid fellow).

Plus I enjoyed the scenes with Aunt May, Betty Brant, and Mary Jane's introduction for Peter's personal life. (Especially after all the talk here anticipating the "hit the jackpot" line.)

CAUTION: TSS-M Spoilers afoot:

These episodes keep getting better and better. I enjoyed the reveal about the Big Man. I believe I remember reading or hearing that Greg can't use the Kingpin character so I guess Tombstone is as high as we'll get on the food chain for now.

Finally getting to meet MJ was awesome, and I didn't expect her to deliver that classic line from the comic book, which I only know about because of the big thing that is happening in the comics right now with the retcon or what have you.

As Greg B said, I never thought I would enjoy an episode about the Rhino so much either. I think it was almost more enjoyable than the Sandman episode last week. That's some great writing there. And of course, the voice work is phenomenal.

End TSS-M Spoilers.

Speaking of phenomenal voice work, the Transformers episode was really great today. I know there are a few people who come here that watch this show also, so I won't mention any spoilers, but this show had its share of reveals today, and with the All Spark shattered into who knows how many pieces, the writers are definitely setting themselves up to drive the story in some really cool directions.

Why are there so many good shows on TV?!? My friends just got me interested in "Dexter" on Showtime. Anyone ever watch that? They pretty much spoiled the first season for me, so I'm going to start watching the 2nd season. The main character Dexter sounds a like like Clive Owen, especially during his inner monologues, very calm, cool and collected for a serial killer following a code. The character's ability to control and hide his emotions are real uncanny.

Anyone else having trouble getting into the Gargwiki?

Okay, first off... I never thought I would ever enjoy a Rhino episode that much. Rhino is a bug, dumb thug and those are usually not my favorite villains. Far from it. But this had to be the best fight scene they've done yet, even topping the Lizard subway battle. I loved how Spidey used his brain to defeat the Rhino. Steam, that clever.

While I'm on the subject of the Rhino, props to Clancy Brown. He's always been one of my favorite voice actors, whether he's playing Hakon, Wolf, Lex Luthor, Gorrath, or whoever. The man is very talented, and brought a real sense of menace to that Big Dumb Thug.

Big Man's identity was a surprise, but honestly, I am not entirely convinced. First off, Tombstone is a badass. But my eyebrow raised as soon as I heard Osborn refer to him as "Mr. Lincoln." This is not me being a comic book purist, far from it. If it is him, I'll be very happy with the decision. While it was fun in the 60s, a journalist leading a double life as a crime lord just doesn't seem like it would fly today. Why would a crime lord need that cover? That's what money and lawyers are for. But Foswell certainly seemed to know a lot about the Big Man... curious. I am expecting another twist here. But the Spidey/Tombstone scene was terrific, and damn, this series is beginning to get epic.

Norman Osborn is being paid to manufacture supervillains as well as imprison them. He's got quite the racket going on there. Good for him. But now that Hammerhead is threatening him, well... Norman obviously won't take that lying down, which makes a great lead in for the next episode, considering who the villain there is supposed to be.

Now, let's swing back to Peter's personal life.

Aunt May is an evil mastermind. So very manipulative. I loved it. Though I will admit, even knowing who was coming, I was kinda rooting for Peter and Betty. But, that all faded as soon as Peter opened the front door and who do we see? Mary Jane Watson, and we get that famous line... "face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot." As a long time fan, this pleased me. I am definitely in the camp that agrees that Mary Jane is Peter's one true love, but even there it annoys me how in most modern re-tellings, Mary Jane has been Peter's "It Girl" since they were toddlers. The movies did it, "Ultimate Spider-Man" did it, and it's refreshing to see the classic version here on screen.

It does make me wonder if Mary Jane fought with her Aunt Anna about meeting Peter Parker. "Their aunts are setting them up, this can't be good." Then again, in the comics, she knew Peter was Spider-Man before they ever met... she saw Spider-Man crawl out of Peter's window the night Uncle Ben died. Should be interesting to see if "Spectacular Spider-Man" follows this story or not.

I eagerly anticipate seeing Flash Thompson dressed as a cheerleader. BTW, Josh LeBarr as Flash cracks me up.

Matt> I don't think it's unreasonable to think that, during the females' heats, both male and female gargoyles experience hormonal surges that are very hard to resist. If heats were no different than any other time, when gargoyles presumably choose whether or not to have sex at the time based on any number of factors, then I doubt the London clan would go to the rather extreme measure of forcibly separating couples during the females' final heats. It would be much easier to simply impress upon these couples (who, by the third heat, would be older and presumably less sex-crazed than a certain young rust colored gargoyle of the Manhattan clan) that they must restrain themselves during this time in order to keep the clan's population stable. The implication seems to be that the desire to mate during a heat outweighs the common sense that would remind a couple that they must abstain for the good of the clan. We need to remember that gargoyles are not just humans with wings and tails. Just because we think of ourselves as being above such hormonal impulses (even though that's not entirely true) doesn't mean that gargoyles are. It could be related to their sensitivity to the rhythms of the planet or it could be tied in to that scent thing that also keeps related gargoyles from breeding with each other. But again, I don't think it's too unreasonable to think that there's a particular time when gargs are all but unable to resist having sex.

Christine> I'm very saddened to hear of Mr Reaves's health troubles. I've enjoyed so much of his work over the years - not just "Gargoyles" - and I'm certainly going to think about picking up the book to help him out a little.

**
INTERWORLD is a delightful YA novel written by Best-selling novelist and short story writer Neil Gaiman and acclaimed script writer Michael Reaves.

As Booklist notes, "A lad discovers that he can walk between alternate Earths--and is swept up in a war between them in this fast-paced, compulsively readable tale."

INTERWORLD will, as with our other Neil Gaiman Limited Editions, be printed on 80# Finch paper in two colors. This time, instead of a dust jacket, we've gone with some extensive, intricate stamping. You may note that the limitation is half that of our usual Gaiman limiteds, making this likely to sell out quick.

One final, important note about our edition: Michael Reaves has recently had considerable health problems related to Parkinson's disease, with one round of brain surgery completed, and another in near future. All of the profits from this limited edition will go to Mr. Reaves to help him with his medical and daily living expenses. Soon, we hope, he'll be feeling much better and back to bringing us wonderful novels such as The Shattered World and The Burning Realm, to name two personal favorites.

Limited: 500 signed numbered hardcover copies
Lettered: 26 signed leatherbound copies in traycase

Gargoyle heats> I dunno. Saying they MUST mate during the heats makes it sound like they have no free will. And it also brings up questions like those you guys have mentioned. What about unmated females? What about females whose mates have died? etc. I tend to think that a gargoyle in heat just has very strong urges to mate. The enforced isolation ensures they don't have this oppurtunity, and maybe for their bodies the isolation is enough. Despite Lex's "Yikes", I don't think the London Clan would be doing this if there was some sort of danger for those involved. And if a pair-bonded couple is seperated temporarily or one of them dies, I think the brain calms the heat or lessens it or something. Keep in mind that the brain is the biggest sexual organ and that gargoyles mate for life. Being without a mate may remove the overwhelming horniness experienced during a heat. Anyway, I don't think it is something a gargoyle can't resist. I don't think they go crazy or anything during the heats. I could be wrong though.
As for sex during the non-heat times, well, I think it's safe to say that they do it. They won't produce an egg, but they do it anyway. Greg has said that Demona and Thailog probably got it on a bit, and hasn't Greg said that Broadway and Angela have already had sex as well?

Accents> When thinking about Constance and Staghart's accents, I think of the Wyvern Clan. Hudson has the deepest Scottish accent because he was older and had had the most contact with humans. Goliath occasionally has a lighter accent (using words like "Aye" from time to time). The Trio, being young and having little contact with humans had neutral accents. I imagine that Leo, Una and Griff, being the shopkeepers and older acquired their accents from humanity, but the younger generations may not have. Constance and Staghart may have neatral accents like the Trio with maybe a hint here and there of their English background.

RE: Gargoyles & Demons

As I understand it there were a lot of concerns that Gargoyles would be interpreted as promoting Satanism or something. Which is blatantly ridiculous since real world gargoyles where originally designed to go on churches. I doubt it would have been an issue if Goliath and co all looked like giant badgers or something.

Plus S&P seem to be a bit more stringent these days. I remember reading about the short lived Silver Surfer cartoon that was on fox way back. Apparently if they had made a second season they would have introduced Mephisto (for non comic book fans, he's basically the Marvel version of Satan). And since they couldn't portray him as a demon, they were planning to re-imagine him as an alien warlord from another dimension. Frankly I'm kind of glad that they never made that second season.

But back to Gargoyles, I find myself agreeing with Todd that if demons did exist in the Gargoyles universe they would probably want to make themselves look as benign and harmless as possible. In fact the only reason I could see a demon taking a more gargoylean form it to deliberately foster fear and hatred of gargoyles.

KRIS - Maybe, but that's what Greg Weisman reported, all the same. (Maybe they were just extra-sensitive about the word appearing in "Gargoyles" because of their fears about gargoyles being mistaken for demons by the audience.)

Of course, the comic book clearly has more liberal S&P than the cartoon; I doubt that they'd have been able to mention anything about female gargoyles in heat in the animated series, for one thing. (Though they did manage to have Iago describing Demona and Elisa's fight in "High Noon" as "diverting" - complete with a lecherous smile on his face.)

Kris> You should check it out. A month or two ago I decided I should finally get around to seeing what all the fuss was about, and I got sucked right in. Doctor Who was my full-time obsession for a couple of weeks. Torchwood, too. Then I started suffering once I caught up, because I'd run through it all and wanted more... But the new season of Who finally started last week. It was quite a weekend, actually, with the season finale of Torchwood and the season premieres of both Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who all at once. So much long-awaited tv.

I think the London gargs would probably have London accents (and Doctor Who does give a pretty good sense of those -- for a time and space traveler with the whole universe at his command, the Doctor spends a whole lot of time in modern London), or maybe they would just use nice, neutral RP picked up from watching the news and not interacting with too many people on the street. I have pretty clear voices in my head for Coco and Amp -- in my head, Coco does sound a bit more brash and London-y, and Amp's a bit more neutral and cultured.

If we had Welsh gargs, I'd be all set. Thanks to Torchwood, I have the Welsh accent down. I even started learning how to pronounce Welsh names because I was tired of being confounded by the likes of Blaidd Drwg, Myfanwy, and Blodeuwedd...

Algernon >> "If you're looking to get a feel for what contemporary British accents actually sound like..."

Yeah I've been meaning to check out the current incarnation of Dr. Who for a while. Russel T. Davies was showrunning/writing the first season or so of it that brought it all back with Christopher Eccleston in the lead a few years ago. I've liked a couple of Davies' mini-series in the past ("Bob & Rose", the original "QAF"). Only other Brit series I think I've seen in the past decade would be "Manchild", which everyone sorta described as a male "Sex & The City" but it was a bit different from that (it featured Anthony Stewart Head--Giles from "Buffy"--as a player dentist).

And no worries, heh, I work with one Scot/Brit at the bank and have enough of a variety of ethnicities in my customers and have known enough authentic Brits to know what kind of hokey fake accents to NOT imagine characters sounding like.

Todd Jensen >> "we know how Greg Weisman had to fight for Macbeth's "You fight like a demon" line in "City of Stone" "

Oh seriously ? For "demon" ? When has that ever been a bad or controversial word to utter out loud in mainstream entertainment ? That's nuts. I could swear we used to hear it all the time in cartoons as kids...though thinking back, maybe not ever on Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Tale Spin, Chip & Dale, or Darkwing Duck...

Waking up at 4am and not being able to fall back asleep doesn't bode well for how I'm gonna feel in the last few hours of my shift later today...

250,000 yen (before tax)!!! With the yen being just about par with the US penny, that's about $2,500. Wow! Granted there are 45 discs to this boxset. But those 45 discs contain only 110 episodes, which makes it over $20 per episode.

Makes $30-$40 for S2V1 with 26 eps look very inexpensive.

Rebel> Yes, I was wondering about that myself. It would be quite inconvenient for a civilized species to have mating, on a particular predetermined date no less, be a biological imperative. And ALSO carry deep cultural significance (lifelong bonding). If gargoyles could mate casually for the purposes of procreation and then go their separate ways, it might be different, but a permanent bond is expected to be formed. What about love, attraction, free will? Say you're a young single female gargoyle approaching heat. There are only a few males around, you don't particularly feel anything for them, and maybe you don't even want a mate and would prefer to go get your PhD in Astrophysics instead. But your body tells you that you HAVE to mate.

"Honey, I love you now and forever."

"Sweetheart, I felt a biological imperative, too, and you were the least objectionable male present. You're a little thick and your breath makes me gag, but you have nice pecs. Now please watch the egg, I have some calculations I want to finish."

YIKES.

"Attend the petty jealousies and angers that prey upon your heart."

Gargoyle Heats > I agree with what others have said. I think that they can mate for pleasure/intimacy at any time, but that (unless they are put in enforced isolation) they MUST mate when they are in heat. Or at least, the female must mate, and the male usually goes along with it.

Also, when do you think a gargoyle's "first time" would be? Do you think they'd wait until the females' first heat before they started mating, or do you think they'd start mating when they first became a couple?

Also, do you think a female who is single, or whose mate has died, still goes into heat? I could see this potentially being awkward for a clan, with some poor single female roaming around trying to mate somehow. With every other species, the answer would be yes, but somehow I think it might be different for gargoyles, maybe because of their imprinting process.

Yes. It seems that there's something about humans that makes them prone to believe that anything with batlike wings, fangs, and claws that can only operate at night is automatically evil.

(I don't know whether genuine demons would ever exist in the Gargoyles Universe - it might have been a Standards & Practices issue; we know how Greg Weisman had to fight for Macbeth's "You fight like a demon" line in "City of Stone" - but I suspect that if any *did* show up, they'd probably look like regular humans with no sinister features, and anti-gargoyle people like Margot would be easily deluded into believing them fine, upstanding members of society.)

Not sure if someone thought of this before but...I had a funny thought today...

We saw Hudson watching TV and switching to Lion King and Quack Pack, both he changed channels on. Apparently they didn't hold his fancy. I wonder what he might have done if the segment with Cheranbog from Fantasia was on TV. I wonder if he'd enjoy it, what he'd think of it. Of maybe when he saw a gargoyle-like creature as being the bad guy, if he'd be annoyed. Comment on how the world hasn't changed much since 994. People still make gargoyles the bad guys.

Meg - I want to elaborate a little bit more about #9's release date. Slg hasn't normally hasn't taken the time to list gargoyles comics coming out more than 1-2 months in advance. #9 making that list makes me pretty confident that #9 is pretty close to being complete, if it isn't.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

It's entirely possible that BG#3 is slated to come out right at the end of May/beginning of June and G#9 right at the end of June. Also, keep in mind that these dates are tentative--remember the interminable wait for #2, when it seemed like every week SLG was listing a new release date for it? I agree SLG's update is good news insofar as it shows that SLG anticipates the next few issues being out relatively on-time, but I wouldn't set too much store by SLG's projected dates.

I suspect with BG#3, at least, SLG's hedging their bets--as dph pointed out, BG#3 should get out in May, as Greg stated on 3/25 that BG#3 was complete. So say it made it to Disney's desk the following Monday 3/31 and project out six weeks (more than enough), that still only brings us to mid-May. I can understand waiting at least a month from BG#2's release date to release #3, and that still us in late May (assuming BG#2 comes out 4/23, and I guess if SLG thinks BG#2 is going to be later than 4/23 it explains waiting till June for BG#3). Unless they're planning to release G#9 and BG#3 together in some sort of Gargoyles bonanza month....

As far as heat/mating for pleasure goes, I agree with Tabby. Theoretically dogs and cats could mate at any time, but they're *compelled* to when the female is in heat. Gargoyles, I imagine, would be the same way--can mate at any time, driven to do so when in heat. I even know some women whose sex drives increase based on where they are in their fertility cycle...I don't see why gargoyles would be all that different.

Meg

Gargoyle heat: Could be that when they're in heat, they HAVE to mate, whereas any other time they would just feel like it whenever they're in the mood, but it'd be a want rather than a need. Coco made it sound like there's more to it than them simply being fertile when they're in heat.
Tabby

Lex's attractiveness: With the wide rage of features gargoyles have, I don't agree that anything is considered universally attractive among them. What's your preference? Snout, tusks, or humanoid face? Wing-claws facing out or in? Wings on the back or at the side? I'd imagine each has their "type" they feel attracted to, and might include features radically different from one's own. I don't think it matters to them much. I think it makes about as much of a difference as hair and eye colour does among humans chosing mates.

In Lex's case, though there aren't many short gargoyles seen in the series, I don't know if he'd be considered "runty" by their standards, in the sense that he's some kind of anomaly instead of just being of a short gargoyle type. I prefer to see it as "Eh, he's just short."

Here's another question: is the now-canon notion of gargoyle "heat" icompatible with the canon-in-training one that states gargoyles mate for pleasure as well? I can't think that they would be (because that would be a pretty dull life, yes?), but I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

Re: Lex's attractiveness.

When considering that he might meet a potential mate in London as of issue 7 all I could think was 'please let there be some non-furry garg he could go for! A dragon, another griff-like garg, something like that! And please let that Stag thing just be a background character, he's too goofy looking to live!'

Then I realized that with the limited space given in a comic, the Stag was probably placed on that last page for a reason. Come issue 8, I still rolled my eyes, but Amp's personality won me over. And then I realized that art school has made me incredibly biased against furry characters (my friends made a habit of printing out the weirdest things they could find online and hiding them in each others books. Then there were teachers that loved to rant about furries). It's actually kind of nice to throw some of that bias off.

Whose to say that fur would necessarily be more attractive than scales or skin though? Wouldn't it be nicer to feel skin on skin contact, and not have fur going up your nose? Maybe gargs don't shed as part of their turning to stone everyday. Staghart definitely has a nice build, but personal preference could count fur against/for him.

Lex... I love Lex, but the first word that comes to mind with him is 'adorable'. But 'cute' could work. Maybe Amp has a thing for short guys, heh. Also can't help but wonder what he'd make of Lexington's sort of tail when he's a little lacking in that department. He's also rocking that loincloth.

Sorry for the length, Lex has been one of my all time fave characters since I was a kid.

DPH - Shouldn't that be April 23 rather than April 21? The comics come out on Wednesdays. Or are they simply referring to the week in which the comic comes out by the date that falls on that week's Monday?

At any rate, I still think it would be appropriate for it to come out on April 23, even though I'm not expecting that many Shakespearean references in that particular issue (unless Greg's planning on doing something more with the Dingo/Prince Hal connection).

ALGERNON - Too bad that Ed Reynolds is currently staying out of the comment room (he doesn't have his copy of #8 yet); he'd have had some great things to say about British accents and how accurately (or inaccurately) American television programs and movies reproduce them.

Kris> If your looking to get a feel for what contemporary British accents actually sound like, a good idea might by to check out some actual British television. The current "Doctor Who" show is particularly good at portraying an authentic feel to modern London. Other shows that the London clan might be fans of include classic British sitcoms like "Only Fools and Horses" and "Dad's Army". The important thing to remember is that no real Briton actually speaks in the stereotypical "by Jove!" kind of dialect you hear in most American movies and TV shows.

Lex's attractiveness > I do agree that it doesn't seem like Lex has a whole lot going on for him physically, compared to many other male gargoyles we've seen in the series. Then again, we're also judging him from a human point of view, and gargoyle notions of beauty may be very different from ours.

At the very least, he probably looks "exotic" from the London gargs' point of view, in the same way that a person from Finland might consider a person from Taiwan to look exotic. From what we've seen of the London clan so far, it seems like they probably wouldn't be accustomed to gargoyles that look like Lex, so he does at least have that going for him.

Rebel

Do you guys think we should be imagining Constance/Coco and Staghart/Amp's voices as sounding British ? 'Cause it didn't even occur to me while reading the issue to hear them with accents. What variety of Brit accent, I wouldn't have the first clue, although I suppose Una, Leo, and Griff's voices could give us some clues. It's just that if they don't have any contact with humans, if Una/Leo/Griff are the only ones really with regular human contact, then it makes more sense for those three to sound traditionally British and the other members of the Knight's Spur clan might sound more unique the same way everyone other than Hudson in the Manhattan clan sounds not-Scottish (I know that had more to do with the voice actors hired, but Greg came up with some viable explanations and creator-wanks for their sounds). Radio and TV could be an influence too, who knows.

Worthwhile submission to Ask Greg, or a waste of his time and this site's space ?

Dunno which of their two names to settle on for each of the new gargs just yet. Guess the next issue or two with them will dictate what feels more comfortable, or whatever they get called more commonly. I figure older gargs, especially Griff being the "newcomer" (though technically returning member), would go by formal/proper names, whereas the teenagers/young adult of the clan would be more likely to use nicknames.

>>>Greg B. said: "Look what happens whenever Lex's orientation is brought up."

I just got caught up on reading through the past four weeks' worth of comment room posts, everyone was remarkably civil and thoughtful on the subject given how much it's been discussed (aside from one or two clueless opinions about bisexuality, but I chalk that up more to unfamiliarity with the subject and the posters not personally knowing people of that persuasion, not rude ignorance). Heck I was still checking this place regularly when Greg made if official and the room exploded a little. There were a few...unhappy folks...but the vast majority were cool with it.

Someone else brought up how the Gargoyles might define beauty in reference to female gargs and Coco, saying they felt strongly that in general, Gargs' definitions of female beauty were probably much different from our own. Given that the possibility of Lex/Amp is the major topic of conversation recently though, that's got me wondering about how male looks are judged.

I guess there's a whole lotta room for how an individual has developed their tastes for what they like and don't like. It's crazy to imagine for gargs though because there's an even wider variety of possible "looks" compared with the possible shapes, colors, and heights you can get with humans. From a human perspective (only one I've got), I can see why Lex would like Amp--he's tall, athletically built (though more lithe and not so much a classic powerhouse He-Man type like Goliath), all noble-looking, and hairy (as opposed to scaley, feathery, slimy, leathery, or however else a Garg might be textured).

But from Amp's eyes looking at Lexington ? He's a little green run with not many distinguishing features. Personally I think Lex is kinda cute, and maybe the rarer wing type counts for something in garg culture or at least to Amp, but he doesn't have a whole lot going on physically. To a human. If Greg W's meaning or toying with the idea of getting them together, hopefully being a genuine nice guy and real intelligent will work in Lex's favor.

Though I think some might be getting themselves hyped up beyond what we should be for this potential situation. This stuff goes across Disney's desk. They've okayed blood/stabbings, but everyone knows violence is more acceptable in North American entertainment than sexuality. Slave Labor's nice and indie enough, they've allowed R-rated material and touched on sexuality plenty of times in their non-Disney books, but I dunno how much Greg will actually be able portray or even say in the comic should he decide to show us that part of the story.

I loved Gargoyles #8--the Shari/Thailog scenes and storytelling, Macbeth, Arthur, Griff, new gargs, even a gang of familiar robots, which I'm normally not overly fond of but am okay with since they included Coldstone and "Desdemona"...I can't wait to re-read all the comics once the second half of Clan Building is complete. Eager to see how it all feels in one sitting.

Slg just updated its release schedule page - http://www.slgcomic.com/info-exec/display/shipping . They put a date down of the 21st for Bad Guys #2. They don't have any gargoyle comics listed for May, but they have bg #3 and gargoyles #9 listed for June.

Of course, that doesn't make sense when you consider http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=10329 .Based on that info and extrapolating time for Disney to approve the comic, I see no reason bg #3 shouldn't be in May. For slg to put gargoyles #9 to be released in June means whoever updated the info expected gargoyles #9 to be finished and sent to Disney by April 25th.

Rebel - The best fit is it is a combination of being around the right age and in touch with Earth's natural cycles. Gargoyle beasts can only become pregnant around the ages of 20, 40, 60, and 80. Right now, I can't even definitely say what year those gargoyle beasts could have laid their 1st egg; only we could say is what year the female beast could have become pregnant. If egg laying isn't tied to Earth's cycles, we could get an Avalon pregnancy of 6 months times 24 or 12 years in the real world. If egg laying is tied to Earth's cycles, we could get an pregnancy of 20 years in the real world to line with the Earth cycles or 10 months on Avalon.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

dph > True. But it still seems like they could conceivably have more than one egg in the rookery if they reached sexual maturity in the 1500s.
Rebel

Rebel - You forget to count the recovery time the female gargoyle beast would need after laying an egg. Every 10 months on Avalon is another breeding season.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

But (and correct me if I'm wrong) if gargoyle beasts in the "normal world" can lay their first egg one cycle sooner than gargoyles can, doesn't that mean they reach sexual maturity in (roughly) half the time? If this is the case, that means that the two gargoyle beasts living on Avalon should have reached sexual maturity sometime in the 1500s, and could have been laying eggs all this time (corresponding to the earth's cycles, of course).
Rebel

Adam - Check this page out: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=7954 . Gargoyle beasts can lay eggs one cycle sooner than gargoyles. Wait a minute, if Ophelia as hatched in 1058, she shouldn't be able to become pregnant until 1058 plus 960 (40 years times Avalon time differential of 24) equals 2018. You're looking at the year of 2008 or 2028 for Ophelia to be able to lay an egg. However, Greg has stated that Ophelia's 1st potential time will be in 2008 so that settles it. For a gargoyle beast on Avalon hatching in 1058, you go 1058 plus 480 (20 years time Avalon time differential of 24) equals 1538. The gargoyle beast could become pregnant in either 1528 or 1548. When that egg is laid from that pregnancy is a good question because 6 months on Avalon equals 12 years in the real world or 1528 (alternatively 1548) plus 12 equals 1540 (alternatively 1560). Neither of those lines up with a natural year to lay eggs.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

Adam > Maybe you're right. Maybe in reality, those two Avalonian gargoyle beasts DO already have several eggs laid. Sometimes, Greg says things and later changes his mind. For example, he initially stated that the Mayan pendant wearers would age at twice the speed of a normal gargoyle (while wearing the pendants) but then later he changed his mind and said that the pendants' magic compensates for it and they age at the normal rate (which I was happy to hear).

So, do some calculations and tell Greg what your findings are and ask him what he thinks. This could be another one of those (admittedly rare) instances where he changes his mind about something. Just make sure you don't present it as an "idea".

Todd - <It's probably saved me from a lot of potential headaches.> It has. I'm beginning to think tgs inevitably made mistakes dealing with Avalon flow of time as well.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

I've been writing a series of stories (to eventually be published) involving a "Faerie" world (here called Annwn rather than Avalon). I'd decided (well, not so much decided as simply assumed as a given from the start) that Annwn-time would flow at the same rate as Earth-time; after reading a lot of the posts about the difficulties of doing the math for the Avalon clan and its fertility cycles, I'm glad that I made that decision. It's probably saved me from a lot of potential headaches.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Adam - There's another logical problem that you forget about gargoyle beasts laying eggs: The Avalon time differential. Female gargoyles and female gargoyle beasts are pregnant for 6 months. 6 months on Avalon equals 12 years in the real world. We know that being pregnant for a gargoyle is tied to the Earth's natural cycles, but the rather silly question of laying an egg being tied to the Earth's natural cycles hasn't been answered. Greg has also indicated that body of the female gargoyle and female gargoyle beast need time to recover before another egg can be laid. How much is needed to recover is another unknown variable. That length of time doesn't matter in the real world because there's plenty of time between cycles, but on Avalon those 20 year Earth cycles pass by every 10 month months. That doesn't amount to much time between female gargoyle beasts laying eggs. Besides, Greg has stated a couple of times that the 1st time Ophelia can become pregnant is 2008. Gargoyle beasts can have one cycle of becoming pregnant/laying eggs sooner than normal gargoyles.

This Avalon math drives me cray. I really need a time line showing events from the Avalonian time perspective vs the 'real' time perspective.

"Culhwch and Olwen" is the biggest of these, but be warned; it's very different in atmosphere from the familiar "knights in armor" version of Malory. Arthur's warriors are more like tall-tale heroes who can do things like drink up the entire sea, shoot a wren in Ireland while standing in Cornwall, and hear ants walking fifty miles away, and they fight against all manner of bizarre creatures. "The Dream of Rhonabwy" is even more peculiar, but I won't even describe it.

Another nit in Malory is that he never describes Lancelot's coming to Arthur's court; he's suddenly portrayed as there. I have a copy of a translation of a French romance about Lancelot's early days, called "Lancelot of the Lake", part of the World's Classics series from Oxford University Press, but I don't know if it's still in print.

Algernon> LOL. Yeah, I recall it being mentioned from somewhere that Merlin was opposed to Arthur marrying Guinevere, and was pretty blunt about it. I think the follow up was Merlin asked for the round table. Can't remember why, but probably forsaw the need for something like it.

Todd> I've heard of Chretien before, so he should be an interesting source. Heard of the Mabonigian, too, but didn't know there were stories about Arthur , so that's a new one to me. Thanks.

Mostly, I'm looking forward to the takes on some characters. Okay, really I'm interested in takes on Lancelot.

Asatira

They probably just followed the rising and setting of the sun. They have day and night on Avalon, and it just happens to equal 24 days in the mortal world. So they hatched in 1058, as time is kept in the rest of the world. Makes sense to me.

"Though I've never understood how God could expect his creatures to pick the one true religion by faith - it strikes me as a sloppy way to run a universe." -Jubal Harshaw ("Stranger In a Strange Land")

But how would they know to do that? It's not like they have a gargoyle expert raising them. Besides, there is no evidence that suggests that the Wyvern clan did that.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Adam > Because the hatchlings in the eggs had to be old enough to hatch. Gargoyle eggs take ten years to hatch, and time on Avalon passes at 1/24th of the speed of time in the rest of the world, so however much time the Wyvern eggs still needed to be in their eggs, you would multiply the number of months/years by 24 and you end up with the Avalon rookery hatching in 1058.

As far as the gargoyle beasts, I dunno. Maybe the Avalon clan separated them during the female's heat so they wouldn't keep having more and more eggs?

Rebel

Then why did the Avalon clan hatch in 1058 instead of 998, or 1018, or 1038? They had to answer to the Avalon cycle of time. So why would it be any different for the clan now that they are older. And by the logic that every one else seems to be going by, the other two beasts should have multiple children by now, not just one egg in the rookery.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

I remember reading Le Morte de Arthur way back. One scene that stuck in my head is when Arthur is first courting Guinevere and Merlin prophesizes the fall of Camelot to him and Arthur jus blows him off. And it wasn't one of those vague symbolic Nostradamus type deal that could mean almost any thing, Merlin went into vivid detail. Here's my paraphrase...

MERLIN: Look Artie, You can't marry Gwen. If you marry Gwen then she's going to have an affair with Lancelot. Plus your going to have sex with your sister and father Mordred and he'll grow up to be a complete bastard. He's going to find out about Gwen and Lance and use that to try and oust you. Then the two of you end up killing each other and Camelot will be burned to the ground. So whatever you do; don't marry Gwen and do NOT have sex with your sister. You listening to me Artie?

ARTHUR: Gwen's pretty.

Asatira- Yeah, I'm currently attempting to read Le Morte de Arthur as well, it's not an easy read but I'm hoping that it'll be worth it.

Adam- yes, but those heats are brought about by the outside forces of certain cycles, so the gargoyle in question does not nessecarily have to be 50, 70, or 90. (However Avalon, and Time Travel are the only reasons that they would not be 50, 70, or 90)

Adam > Yes, but the heats are caused by the cycles of the earth, not by the female reaching a particular age.
Rebel

But in Gargoyles #8, Greg clearly states that female gargoyles have "heats". Coco says that males and female are kept separate during the females final heat. To me, that suggests that females can only mate three times in their lives at ages 50, 70, and 90.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

ASATIRA - Malory's work may be difficult at first because of the archaic language, but it's worth it. Its chief weakness is a series of minor inconsistencies (Malory could never make up his mind how King Pelles got wounded in the leg, for example - or if it was even Pelles or somebody else in his castle), but if you don't mind that, it's good.

Besides "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", you might want to read Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain". This covers legendary British history from the aftermath of the Trojan War down to the Saxon conquest of Britain, not just Arthur's reign, but is the earliest start-to-finish account of Arthur's story that we have.

After that, you might also try Chretien de Troyes' Arthurian romances (which introduced the Lancelot-Guinevere story, Percival, and the Holy Grail into the cycle - or at least, popularized them). And maybe, for something extremely different, "Culhwch and Olwen" from the Mabinogion, which climaxes with Arthur and his warriors hunting the great boar Troit (whom I hope was not an ancestor of Constance).

Todd Jensen

This may wind up being answered by only a couple of people, but I'm throwing it out here. I'm starting to get back into doing research on the Arthurian legends, and I want to hit up the major sources. I have a copy of "Le'Morte" that I will screw up the courage to read one day. I'd just like some thoughts on Le'Morte, as well as some other sources to look at. Not so much modern reinterpretations (so no White, Zimmer-Bradley, or Stewart, much as I love 'em), but "source" materials. Even shorter pieces, like "Gawain and the Green Knight" would be good.
Asatira

Well, I can't shake my head at any of you guys who have Gargoyle related dreams, for I had my first one last night, at least the first one I remembered when I woke up.

I was dreaming that I was reading a new Gargoyles comic, and it was heavily foreshadowing that Angela was going to die. And I remember being very sad to hear the news to the point that I was in tears. That's all I can remember.

Shara - [Jeanie54_2000 at yahoo dot com]

Adam - Avalon clan hatched in 1058. They have to wait until they reach 40 years old. 40 * 24 = 960 years. 1058 hatched plus 960 years later = 2018 ad, which is 10 years off. If they hatched in 1038, that would make it 1998 ad, again, which is 10 years off. The really problem I see in the Avalon clan isn't calculating when the females can become pregnant or when the eggs would hatch, but how long the pregnancy would be. Normal gargoyle pregnancies are 6 months. 6 months on Avalon equals 12 years in the real world.

Anyways, I have a different Avalon time question. Assuming Angela lived a normal gargoyle lifespan and she decided to return to Avalon after her 3rd egg hatched, what would be the latest year she could go to Avalon and return to the real world in 2198 and still have some time left to live? No, I'm not talking about tgs, just curious if there is a possibility of Angela still being alive in 2198 if she stayed in the real world long enough to start to raise a family before returning to Avalon?

Adam > "If the Avalon clan lays eggs in 2008 when they won't even be 40(20) years old. To me, that doesn't make any sense."

Well, it's possible that sexual maturity comes before the usual breeding time. Gargoyles would almost always breed when they are 50 (25), but only because of the planet's cycles. Just because they usually DON'T breed earlier than 50 (25), doesn't necessarily mean that their bodies aren't sexually mature enough to breed before 50 if the planet allowed it.

For example, human females usually have kids in their late twenties or early thirties, but we're CAPABLE of having kids in our teens.

Rebel

Speaking of "Gargoyles" voice actors playing Macbeth, I've read (in a book I have about the making of the LOTR movies) that John Rhys-Davies has played Macbeth in the theatre as well as voice acting the Macbeth of "Gargoyles" (and also played Othello and Falstaff).

On Avalon, how come the beasts are laying eggs when they are supposed to biologically but the rest of the clan is laying eggs earlier. A female gargoyle lays her first egg when she 50(25) years old. If the Avalon clan lays eggs in 2008 when they won't even be 40(20) years old. To me, that doesn't make any sense.

Just wanted to pop in to share my findings. I received an Ipod Classic a few months ago and have been trying to find the best way to convert video to it. I believe I may have found a darn good converter. I've started to convert season 1 and hope to get the entire series finished before my summer trip.

If anyone is interested, the converter I'm using is called Super c. The 'c' is actually a circled 'c'. It takes about 20min an episode, so it's not very fast. The results are great though. Well worth it.

Adam - <I believe that it has been established that the first time that the members of the Avalon clan will lay eggs is in 2258 as long as they stay on Avalon.> You're wrong. Every female gargoyle around the world, including the Avalon clan, will be capable of getting pregnant in 2008. Now, I had a question about when a female gargoyle living on Avalon could lay eggs after becoming pregnant. Greg Weisman couldn't answer that question off the top of his head - See http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=10358 . I am not that bothered with that response. Heck, it took me a few hours to calculate and double check my math involving the assumptions that I made. It would be so much simpler if the female gargoyles left Avalon a couple of days before getting in heat and remained off Avalon until the eggs were laid.
dph_of_rules

Sorry to interupt what everyone is talking about, but I have made an observation about Gargoyles and I would like to get someone elses opinion. I believe that it has been established that the first time that the members of the Avalon clan will lay eggs is in 2258 as long as they stay on Avalon. If that is the case, that is also the first time that Boudicca would lay an egg. However, if she stays on Avalon and Bronx stays in Manhattan, Bronx would be long dead before he could have a child with Boudicca. So I think that sometime in the future, Boudicca is likely to join the Manhattan plan permantley. What do you guys think.

bob> I'll let you know if I find any reactions. I've been looking through the older comment room weeks for quite some time now.

I did come up with a Gargoyles related question though. One point that Todd's voiced about The Goliath Chronicles episode Generations is how viewed by itself it would give Demona some validity as it contained no decent human throughout the episode. So I wonder if Greg's inclusion of a human protagonist in any Demona story was a conscious decision or just one of those ideas that write themselves.

There aren't any written rules for the CR. Most of them are unwritten and involve harassing other users. There's no policy on topic or language or the like. The community does a pretty good job policing itself and I think the fact that we've had no hard-written rules for over 10 years proves the point.

That said, if things ever "get out of hand" (which can be interpreted in so many ways trying to define it is useless) I can always step in and block users from posting. There is a word filter system that could be exercised if I ever cared to do so, but I really don't want to get into the business of censoring people. I think the vast majority of people who use the CR are mature adults who can deal with the occasional curse or blasphemy.

Posts of course don't have to be just about Gargoyles. It's an open forum and you can discuss just about anything you want (within reason. hate speech, shock topics, etc, i'll do something about). Politics is always going to be one of those sticky topics, like religion. You just have to recognize everyone has their own opinion, not everyone thinks like you, and just because they don't agree doesn't mean they are evil incarnate.

I'd prefer those more divisive topics didn't come up often in the CR because they tend to create more rifts than mend bridges. I like to think people can come here to get away from the typical forum troll fodder found elsewhere online. And while politics shouldn't be relegated to the title of "forum troll fodder", most discussions seem to end in that very thing.

Maybe the one rule I should put to stone is you have a right to express your opinion only if you're willing to accept that it might be wrong.

That is all I will say.

Comment Room Rules> Gorebash would be the ultimate authority on this, but I've never seen any kind of rules posted, so I think we're on our room. Greg W once expressed a preference for keeping casual swearing out of the room, but that's the closest I've ever seen to some kind of guidelines for wht can and can't be posted.

I do think that off-topic conversation has a place in the Comment Room. It was pretty rampant in the years between the end of the TV series and the start of the comic. Heck the first ten posts or so more often and not tend to just be people noting their order in posing after the room refresh, which has nothing to do with anything. The format of the Comment Room doesn't give us any way to separate on-topic and off-topic conversation or much way to moderate what people choose to post. It's my observation that even if you have a more standard bulletin board style forum, it's tough to prevent people from having off-topic discussions. If you don't give them a forum for it, they'll just put it in whatever forum is most convenient. As other people have pointed out, we're currently getting roughly one new comic a month, which certainly generates a good deal of conversation, but tends to peter out after a week or two. Even if you stretch the scope of the room to cover projects involving former "Gargoyles" cast and crew, it's not a ton of material and it can get confusing for people who may not understand why it's OK to discuss one show but not another. Unless we want to give the room a more formal hierarchy with moderators and posted rules, it's just going to be one group of people trying to tell another group of people what they can and can't discuss.

I don't necessarily have a problem with discussing politics, but I do think there needs to be an agreement that people should be civil. If we can discuss our opinions and still remain polite and not make it personal, fine. But I think any discussion topic that cannot be talked about without causing a fight should be avoided.

Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

* SPOILERS FOR #8 *

I had two more recent thoughts about the latest issue.

1. We discussed earlier how the different threads in the Stone of Destiny story segue into each other - such as how, after Arthur and Macbeth comment about how there aren't too many immortals like themselves around, we return to Shari (whom many of us suspect to be another famous legendary figure survived into the modern world, just as Arthur and Macbeth have).

Shari's "Sword in the Stone" flashback appears in the comic immediately after Arthur's disappearance. Many of us have speculated that Arthur disappeared because someone working for the Illuminati grabbed him (with the robotic attack on the gargoyles being just a distraction).

Now, in Shari's version of the Sword in the Stone story, Merlin is portrayed as working with King Pelles, who was Fisher King before Percival. We know that Greg had planned Mr. Duval to be Percival as the present Fisher King, and I assume that he hasn't changed his plan. Since Pelles was Percival's predecessor in the office of Fisher King, that might make him a sort of proto-Illuminatus. And he takes an interest in Arthur becoming king, not only joining forces with Merlin, but also setting the crown on Arthur's head in the "September 29, 500" flashback.

Could Pelles' involvement in the Sword in the Stone (Greg Weisman's invention) and the location of Shari's story be a hint about the Illuminati's interest in Arthur? We'll have to wait until #9, at least, but I think it's worth considering.

2. Also in #8, we learn from Griff that the London clan has no gargoyle beasts. We know that the next story in the comic book will be Brooklyn's Timedancer adventures, including his return with Fu-Dog, another gargoyle beast. Greg's mentioned that Fu-Dog comes from the Xanadu clan, and the Xanadu's clan works hard to breed gargoyle beasts and keep them from becoming extinct. Is Griff's line here a means of preparing the audience for the role of Fu-Dog in the next story, establishing how gargoyle beasts are becoming rare and thereby showing how important the Xanadu clan's work is?

Given that, I don't see any harm in bringing in a little off-topic discourse in too keep the room lively.

That and sometimes like a writer, those who post comments need a little inspiration for the things that are on topic.

As for why I brought up the Legion episode:

A. Since the current super hero cartoon we're watching was on a rerun, I figured I'd start a little discussion on another super hero cartoon.

B. It wasn't a run of the mill episode, but the finale, so that struck me as discussion material.

But I do apologize if my comment wasn't appropriate or excess if I have been overdoing it.

That said, I have to side with Greg B on this. Politics is one of those topics that generally brings out the worst in people, particularly on the Internet. What may start off as a reasoned intelligent discussion usually degenerates in to a childish shouting match to see who can hurl the worst epitaphs at their opponent, "Godless Hippie!", "Fascist Pig!".

Ideally people should be able to discuss things like gun control, abortion or the war in Iraq without acting like shrieking idiots. Alas we do not live in a ideal world, we live in a world where every shrieking idiot is constantly striving to out-scream all the other shrieking idiots.

I think we should lighten up when it comes to politics. I think we're not giving ourselves enough credit if we assume that even the tiniest mention of something remotely political is going to cause a fight. I didn't think BB's comment was out-of-line at all, and I doubt it would have caused any problems. Personally, after reading BB's comment, I still had no clue what Heston's politics were when it comes to guns, nor did BB's comment make me feel compelled to go look it up just to argue.

I actually think Bishanky's comment in regards to BB's comment is what is more likely to cause an argument, if the last several comments are any indication.

Let's all just chill out. If it looks like a fight is going to start, let's deal with it then, not react prematurely. As of now, it's more like we're trying to avoid a housefire by chastising anyone who so much as dares to light a candle :/.

Also, I think we should be able to talk about lots of things here, not just Gargoyles. Greg B. : I agree wholeheartedly about keeping politics out of this CR. Furthermore, I personally believe that, being that this is a Gargoyles comment room, we should all try to keep our conversations as on-topic as possible. Take last week for example. Aside from the one episode written by Greg, how is "Legion of Superheros" related in any way to Gargoyles? Personally, I don't think that any part of that discussion belonged here. Now, I know that I've hardly been squeaky-clean on that score. I've said a lot of things while in this fandom that really should never have been said. However, from this moment on, I pledge that I will not post anything unless it is related to Gargoyles, Greg, or the fandom.
