So "Dr. Pax" = troll. Thought as much. Judging by some of his answers, which weren't either "Classified" or "OK", he was kind of a religious, right-wing type as well. Funny how those kinds always spring up. I remember back when this one showed up: http://www.formspring.me/readpsalm23 Trying to proselytize to fictional characters! Obviously, those were taken down.

But enough about the wingnut side of social media. Any Formspring storylines that many would've liked to see resolved? I'm still wondering where this one's would've gone:

No player cared about or interacted with DrEgonNexusPax because of his absolute refusal to adhere to the rules of the RP. In fact, most of us blocked him, and requested new players block him.

He was given three chances to adhere to the rules, and did not.

He was a troll to be ignored.

So the Comment Room just went wonky, right? Well, that's a relief, I guess. Seems to be fine now.

So yeah, I'm also sad about Formspring shutting down. But at least we had a good time while it lasted. If you want to read more about my thoughts, might I direct you here?

And this is why Greg and I get along so well. We are both sadistic bastards. Just last week I was saying that I'd love to own that original page.

"For every two dozen Phantom Menaces, there is a Return of the King. For every two-bit Shyamalan, a Stanley Kubrick is born. For every poor soul who groans during an Adam Sandler-funded Rob Schneider vehicle, there is a child crying life-affirming tears when Bambi's mom is shot. Somewhere out there, a film student is finding out what Rosebud means for the first time. A man is pausing as Fredo prays the Hail Mary on a boat over Lake Tahoe. A woman grasps her heart as Bogie's love flies off into the foggy night. All it takes is one moment to change a person. And that one moment... no matter how fleeting... is worth a thousand Transformers."

So yesterday, Christopher Jones posted this up on his blog.

Not sure exactly what he's up to but it couldn't hurt for everybody to take a couple of minutes to fill it out and see what happens.

Matt -- yep, I definitely had trouble posting last night, and frankly, was worried that my failed attempts would just lead to duplicate posts D:

My original post was going to mention that while I've visited this Comment Room for more than a couple of years now, I haven't typically pointed out what the 16th usually means for me. Nevertheless, I did just want to say that watching "Endgame" was probably the highlight of my birthday. :)

In fact, after catching the finale, my Young Justice high led me to the store not too long ago where I treated myself to YJ's Season Two, Part Two set, which now sits next to my two Season One sets.

(and just noticed this, but we got to say goodbye to Earth-16 -- for now -- on the 16th, lol.)

Oh, and the green text is for St. Patrick's Day ;)

Sorry for the double post. Was anyone else having trouble posting or did it just happen to be really quiet and only I had trouble? Personally, I think Comet killed the room. : )

Anyway, I watched "Endgame" yesterday...
"That [Wally] complains AND remains passive rather than proactive about a very, very serious global disaster that endangers not only his friends but his girlfriend doesn't speak very well to the kind of person he's become..."

Couldn't help but remember this quote from earlier this week in the Comment Room. Anonymous must feel like a fool. And good for Greg for having the patience and restraint to deal with those opinions, especially with this episode in the bag.

Anyway, Wally was always my favorite character and is even moreso now. He, and the show, will be missed. Until we hear more stories from Earth-16.
I would think wizards are especially long-lived if they've combined the magics of the Eye of Odin, Phoenix Gate, and Grimorum Arcanorum. Or... if he had the Phoenix Gate, maybe he just time-travelled?
Supermorff

I feel uneasy about gender-swapping of that sort - though there is the matter of Loki (presumably also one of the Third Race) turning into a mare and becoming the mother of Sleipnir, Odin's horse - so I'd lean towards the Soothsayer not being one of the Weird Sisters (they usually operate all three together, rather than one, as well).

The Roman Magus theory is tempting, though it may not fit the chronology that well; the Spell of Humility was cast in A.D. 10, near the end of Augustus's reign (four years before he died, one year after the infamous defeat in the Teutoberg Forest), while Caesar's assassination was in 44 B.C., fifty-four years before. Wizards are often long-lived, so it's possible - but the soothsayer who spoke of Caesar's death might have been the Roman Magus's teacher (assuming he had one and wasn't self-taught).

Incidentally, the historical records that Shakespeare drew on gave a name for the soothsayer: Spurrina. (In spite of the "a" ending, he was male.)

It has been announced that Formspring will be closing down at the end of the month.

As such, I am choosing to out myself as one of the SpecGarg's players.

First and foremost...I wish to thank all of the fans here who have watched and enjoyed our stories...Let me tell you, it's been a lot of fun, and we do have more stories planned. At the moment however...We are looking for a new venue to tell them in. The Spectacular Gargoyles needs a new home.

We're open to any and all suggestions you have. We know Tumblr is the obvious choice...But we are looking for alternatives as well. Won't you please help us find a new home?

Hi! First time commenter -- saw Greg's post re: attending WonderCon and meeting with fans. Just wanted to ask him to consider doing the same thing at SD ComicCon, since I believe he stated he'd be in attendance there as well. Supermorff> That certainly sounds like something the Weird Sisters would do. Maybe they temporarily took on male forms? Granted, there are many other prophetic mythological characters that could be Children of Oberon, so I find myself doubting that, but I figured it's a possibility.

I could be completely wrong but in hindsight, it looks like Disney raised the price of the license in hopes that it would be dropped. This would free the title and idea of Gargoyles up so they could continue with that awful idea of a movie they have.

With that in mind, convincing Disney to agree to Kickstarter would be very difficult. Dont get me wrong, if a KS goes up, Im in. Just wanted to share this view.

Okay, let's run with that. Today is the Ides of March, made famous by Shakespeare with the phrase quoted by Todd, which was spoken to Julius Caesar by the soothsayer.

Julius Caesar is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, but it's one that doesn't get discussed much by Gargoyles fans. Why is that? We already know that Augustus (who appears in the play as Octavius) has an incredibly key role in the history of the Gargoyles universe. Maybe it's because the play doesn't have as many obviously magical elements as other plays, so it's harder for us to hang our plot hooks on it.

But it has one magical element, and it's a big one, and I've already mentioned it once in this post: the soothsayer.

The soouthsayer predicts Caesar's death. In Antony and Cleopatra, another soothsayer predicts that Augustus will defeat Marc Antony. My personal opinion is that, in a universe as cohesive as Gargoyles, these two characters are probably the same person. But what? A human fortune-teller? Might he be the Roman Magus that cast the Spell of Humility for Augustus? One of Oberon's children? If so, might he have taken other roles in the plays as well?

Does anyone have a thought?

Supermorff

Or that money could be used to purchase the license again for a certain period, probably longer than just six issues. We'll see what he has in mind.

NEILL> To my thinking, six more comic issues are infinitely better than zero more comic issues, even if those six are all we ever get. Besides, I think the greatest value in any potential Gargoyles Kickstarter is convincing Disney/Marvel that there's real money to be made here.

I'm sorry. I guess I interpreted the "We're trying to leave the life" to mean Wally really, really didn't want to help unless absolutely necessary (no one else could even hope to catch Bart / Artemis's situation and BG with villain society were very specifically suited to helping Kaldur), and Dick wouldn't involve either of them and avoid asking for help at all costs, so I figured Wally would need to indicate he wanted to help. But if Wally would always help when asked, then it was truly not bright of Dick not to ask for help after Warworld, and of course Wally's not to blame for that.

My mom's from St. Louis so it was pretty hard to see "it" nuked and to have Wally just go back to school after that and not want to fight the aliens that did it, and so probably clouds my judgment. For the record, I never thought he was a douche or a monster, but just that he didn't want to be a hero anymore and actively help out was disappointing and seemed counter to what I knew about him.

Thanks, and I do have a different take on it now.

I also didn't mean to be anonymous - it looks like I typoed my name into a tilda.

Thanks again - I'm pretty lucky that you happened to have looked at the comments today.

Disney has to be convinced first.
But if we do end up with successfully funding a new comic... wouldn't that mean the comic will have a set number of issues? Because you fund one complete project through Kickstarter and not an ongoing series. It'd be a shame if we managed to fund like the first 6 issues, then Gargoyles has to stand financially on his own but fails to make enough money and everything get's cancelled before we even get going, kinda like the SLG comics.

But that's all hypothetic... It may even take a lot more years before every company acknowledges Kickstarter. If only Kickstarter had been around when the Gargoyles DVD's were released.

Neill - [neillgargoyle(a)gmail.com]

@Kirk I hope Greg puts some serious thought into Kickstarter. I would definitely contribute towards a Gargoyles project in any type of medium, especially a continuation of the comic, show or even a movie.

Anonymous - I don't usually stop by here, but you happened to catch me on the day I posted about WonderCon, so here I am. I read your post, but it seems to be more or less the same post I already responded to.

It just feels like you're making the least charitable and most judgmental interpretation of Wally's behavior you possibly could.

Complaining? I don't see it. Yes, he expresses reservations about Artemis rejoining the life. But is that so wrong? After that, to me, he's the voice of reason and honesty whenever Nightwing tried to spin things in a falsely positive light. And Nightwing was trying to spin things. Yes, maybe Wally over-reacted by briefly suspecting Kaldur to be a triple agent, but given what had just happened, can you blame him for momentarily losing his cool in the heat of the moment? And you can't seriously be saying he was complaining in "Summit". He's bantering with Artemis, like he always has. And then he's extremely positive to Kaldur, trying to cheer him up.

And did you see the bit in my ASK GREG response about how he's as involved as Nightwing wants him to be? You're still assuming Wally's refusing to help. But that's just not the case, and there is NOTHING in the show to indicate that it is. When Nightwing asked for his help with Impulse, Wally was there. When Nightwing asked for his help at the Summit, Wally was there.

You can chose to feel like Wally's being a douche, but I don't see it. And you're just not going to convince me otherwise. So I'll take my chances with the fans, vis-a-vis there turning against the character or the series. I'll take my chances.

WONDERCON ANAHEIM - Who'd like to meet up?

My daughter Erin and I will be attending WonderCon on Friday, March 29th:

http://www.comic-con.org/wca

I'm not on a panel or anything official. I'm just going to look around, hang out, etc. But ASK GREG moderator Masterdramon is also going, and we thought it might be fun to organize a semi-impromptu ASK GREG LIVE event. I assume most folks would want to talk about Young Justice, which is great. But we can also discuss Gargoyles or the weather or whatever. Chris Jones and I did something similar a few weeks ago at a Doctor Who convention, and we had fun. I think about twenty or so fans showed, which was a nice number. We might wind up with a few more or less. Or, heck, maybe it'll just be me, Erin and Masterdramon, which is okay too. EIther way, we want to try to keep the thing unofficial, informal, casual, etc.

The main question I have is exactly when and where should we meet up? Has to be Friday the 29th, and because (a) I'm driving down there from Los Angeles and (b) it's the first day of the con, it probably shouldn't be too early. Likewise, I'm not staying overnight, and I have the drive home, so not too late either. So an afternoon meet-up, I'm guessing. Or maybe lunch? An early dinner? Linner?

And where do we meet? How do we find each other? (I'm not familiar enough with the Anaheim Convention Center to know exactly where a good spot might be.)

I'm definitely open to suggestions. I'm posting this at ASK GREG, but also here in the Station 8 Comment Room, which I'll be checking periodically between now and the con. If you have any thoughts on where we could meet, please post them here in the Comment Room.

It'll also help us gauge interest in how many people might actually be, well... interested in this sort of thing. So even if you have no suggestions but you plan on joining us, post anyway, so that we can begin to approximate a head count. It may influence where we meet up.

The week before the convention, I'll post the final specifics on where and when at ASK GREG and at Station 8.

Hope to see at least a few of you soon.

Greg Weisman

Hi,

I just noticed that Greg said he wasn't sure why people are having a hard time finding Wally sympathetic this season (and I, at least,0 don't mean "sympathetic" in a "feel sorry for him" way. I don't know what the poster meant, but I mean it from it from a story-telling perspective, as in whether or not an audience member could empathize with his actions, not whether it seemed like he was demanding sympathy).

At any rate, for me at least, one major reason that I can see that people are upset with Wally isn't so much that he quit, but it's that he complains about people who DO want to help and the work they're doing /AND/ then continues to do nothing.

He complains when Artemis wants to challenge herself and do something that would also potentially save billions of people ("I'm not happy"/"he shouldn't need you"). He's pessimistic and complain-y to Dick right after she leaves ("who are are you kidding..."). When things go wrong, he comes in and yells at Dick and assumes the absolute worst of Kaldur, whom he hasn't even spoken to in months and months. Heck, even after things are almost over and done, when the world is almost saved, his second sentence to Artemis is griping about how she put [us/him] "through this."

The confrontation with Dick was fairly understandable - when things go wrong, everyone loses their cool. But he yells, says that Kaldur probably isn't trustworthy ... and then he goes home, as far as we know. He's leaving the life of his girlfriend - someone he was so terrified for - in the hands of someone he apparently doesn't trust and someone else who is clearly having a really hard time keeping things under control. And he just leaves, I guess. Or whatever he /does/ do just wasn't important enough to show.

That sort of passive reaction seems /unrealistic/ when the stakes are so high, especially when Wally has eight years of finely honed tactical and fighting skills at his disposal, and Artemis's life is on the line.

He wouldn't even have to fight physically necessarily; obviously Dick (and Kaldur, and to some extent even Artemis - she chose to do this of sound mind and body) need help planning.

Not helping is fine. Complaining is fine. But complaining AND not helping? That makes him hard to respect, much less like (and he is (was?) my favorite :().

I don't know if Greg even reads these comments, but I just thought if he wanted to see another explanation I'd offer it, in addition to the standard concern that it seems a little shortsighted and un-generous not to help his obviously struggling friends during a time when his hometown got nuked by a human-neutron bomb, aliens are invading, the Earth has acquired a second moon, and the Reach was exposed to have a massive armada at their disposal. I was really surprised he didn't call and ask to help in any way at all after Warworld. He can do things to help that no one else on Earth could, and not only because he's a speedster (he wouldn't have to physically fight!) - he's brilliant and has a understanding of hero-ic operations that no one else does, and unlike Barry, he doesn't have obligations to a city.

That he complains AND remains passive rather than proactive about a very, very serious global disaster that endangers not only his friends but his girlfriend doesn't speak very well to the kind of person he's become, and my heart breaks a little more every time someone decides they don't like Wally as a character or they stop watching the show altogether because they don't like him.

With the success of the Veronica Mars movie on Kickstarter, I also wonder about the possibility of fans funding the extra money that SLG needed to continue licensing Gargoyles. Hopefully, it's possible.

I'd love to see SpecSpidey and YJ continued as well. Although, even as comic series I think they are less likely since the characters are currently "in use" by their owners, unlike Gargoyles.

Kirk

Gene Silva> I think Greg and Co. maybe alluding to stint in the 70s, when Manta was characterized as a militant black revolutionary who's stated goal was to carve out an undersea kingdom where "his people" would forever be free of white oppression. Think Malcolm X meets Captain Nemo. Though I believe DC quickly dropped that idea afterwards.

Though looking at his wikipedia page, there's also this...
"For most of his published history, Black Manta had no definitive origin story. The first was given in #6 of the 1993 Aquaman series. In this origin, the boy who would become Black Manta grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and loved to play by the Chesapeake Bay. As a youth he was kidnapped and sexually abused on a ship for an unspecified amount of time. At one point he apparently saw Aquaman with his dolphin friends and tried to signal him for help but was not seen. Finally, he was forced to defend himself, killing one of his tormentors on the ship with a knife. Hating the emotionless sea (and Aquaman, whom he saw as its representative), the boy was determined to become its master.[3]"
Even on Earth-16, all things are true... few are accurate.

Incidentally, does Greg W know about them (I'm sure the answer is yes)?
After I watched the episode Summit, I noticed that black manta made a lot of references to slavery. He says that "Black manta is not a slave to no one", calls his son "boy" and says that a " Free Man must be ruthless". I also noticed a lot of, for lack of a more educated term, African artwork in his room. So my question is was Manta a slave in some nation somewhere or his he just a huge fan of roots and the African American liberation movement?
Nice grammar, LOL

I was reading a few older entries in the comment room. Found some interesting things. (don't remember what week it was after closing the window, sorry)

- Why do so many people not understand that the communal raising of hatchlings has nothing to do with enforcement? Children have many parents and parents many children. I know this is well known here, but I see so many misunderstandings about that. People just seem to think that many parents = no real parents (same for children) and that Gargoyles had to force themselves to love all their children equally instead of only their biological one.... sometimes it is even depicted almost as if it was abandonment (fanfiction).
But it is no different to humans caring for their own children, only that there are many children and many parents oO

- Will Coldstone still be alive in 2198? And what will happen to his hair if it is destroyed (for example in battle)? Is that even real hair?
