Comments for the week ending August 27, 2017

Index : Show Images

Today I visited San Francisco only to find that the planned events were cancelled. So instead of a day of potential violence and hatred I instead got a day filled with good vibes, good music, and good people.
After what happened in Charlottesville this gives me a bit of hope for the future.

For those curious, looks like Amazon finally put some cover art and a release date (02/27/2018) for Greg Weisman's next World of Warcraft: Traveler book, The Spiral Path:

https://www.amazon.com/Spiral-Path-World-Warcraft-Traveler/dp/1338029371/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1503580670&sr=1-3

Shame there's no indication on there being a hardcover edition, but oh well, I'm still looking forward to the next book. :)

Jurgan> As I recall, Greg himself admitted that Demona taking out Owen was a cheat.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

"To prepare, first the body must grow up. Just take a long time to face."

"For the spirit to be willing, the flesh must first grow weak. Just long enough for soul in flight to pass from cheek to cheek." I never much liked that quote, actually. Something about it sounds weird, but I can't say why.

'"Owen translates it as "all who see this, all who hear this."'

And somehow Demona uses that spell to paralyze him and tie him to a chair. Not sure how that works.

Gargoyles itself isn't immune to translation errors. The first part of the "stone by night" spell, for example, is "omnes conspecti, omnes auditi," which literally means "all who have been seen, all who have been heard," although Owen translates it as "all who see this, all who hear this."

Alright, I'm gonna give it a shot:

"To prepare, first the body must grow up. Just take a long time to face."

For those curious, this was Arabic -> Spanish -> Czech -> Japanese -> Hebrew -> Polish -> Somali -> German -> Vietnamese -> English.

Todd> Yeah, that's pretty much the takeaway. Though to be fair, I did put them through a lot of different languages before bringing them back to English, usually just one language didn't change things beyond recognition...except sometimes when it did. So yeah, artificial translation is definitely iffy at best. (But good for some laughs if you're bored.)

"For SCIENCE, which, as my associate Fang indicated, must move ever forward." - Sevarius

Thanks, Ross. Those two "re-translated" quotes had so little in common with the original that it reminded me of the saying that translation is a betrayal. (Of course, those translations were done by computer rather than by living beings - maybe it's also a comment on the limitations of computers. As in "The trouble with artificial intelligence is it's artificial.")

Regarding last week's unsolved quotes:

"Ha ha. This is a cool weekly cartoon," comes courtesy of Thailog: "Wow. Haven't had a good maniacal laugh in weeks."

As for "The trumpet, not a great calm. And, of course, are you in trouble? You are sons of sail.": "Don't crow too loudly. After all, what have you achieved? You beat up a beach."

The latter one's one of my favorite Gargoyles lines, and I love that Greg is always trying to sneak it into his other stuff. (I can't imagine, given the setting, that it won't pop up in Rain of the Ghosts at some point.)

I don't need to take the Fifth concerning eclipse viewing. I totally was (even if it was only about 90% coverage here).

Fourth in the name of seeing the eclipse despite the weather. Suck it Bay Area fog!

Second.

ROSS - What were the two that nobody got (the "weakly cartoon" and "sons of sail" ones) from last week?
