Comments for the week ending July 31, 2022

Before the week closes, have to give mention to Nichelle Nichols who sadly passed away today at the age of 89.
Got to meet her very briefly at a convention and she was the sweetest woman.

When you return to your unobservable but empirically determined dimension of origin--tell them CARL SAGAN sent you.

I don't think any of the SLG stories we got were ones that spawned TGC episodes. The SLG comic was really heavy on the fantasy elements and TGC never really seemed to want to utilize those (see: Timedancer turning into a story about street urchin runaways). The Thailog episode COULD have been based on the SLG Thailog story, but other than having Thailog in it, I don't see any other similarities.

As to the introduction, honestly, I think what makes the most sense is just telling a small story (probably a Goliath-Elisa story). I know the idea that we go forward with the timeline is popular, but while it doesn't need to be 2022 (or even 97 really), jump forward a bit, or go to something new where *no one*; both old and new fans has no idea what's going on. Then we're all on the same page and we learn about things as they happen. Then go back and cover whatever events transpired in that short time skip.

I feel like a lot of the proposals or thinking about the show are still kind of stuck in thinking about the show as a syndicated TV series. When it doesn't need to be that way. The team for the new comics can do literally *anything*. We could have a one off graphic novel about MacBeth fighting Hitler or something. It doesn't necessarily need to just be a straight, strict continuation of the TV show. It could be like 20th Century Boys where we start the story in 2022 and something's happening that's reflected in the Gargoyles world of '96. Gargoyles plays around with timelines *all the time*.

Oh, and thanks for another fine analysis, Ed. It's great to have you posting here again.

I forgot to mention the "Weird Macbeth" story (though that one seems to have started as a rejected Season Two story).
Todd Jensen

Thanks Todd!

Good summary of the known plots. Did we ever figure out which TGC episodes spawned from which S3 concepts of Greg's? Clearly "Runaway" came from the Timedancer story but it's not clear to me that the double-date and Stone of Destiny stories are the progenitor to any TGC episode (though, in all fairness, I've not watched them for decades and one not at all).

(Incidentally, while I completely understand Greg's "no spoilers" policy and perhaps he even regrets giving away things in his early days here, I really love that we have little teases and bits of information. I don't personally expect Greg to stick to any of these decisions 20 years on but, absent new material, I think it's added so much to discussion over the years to have these breadcrumbs and still does. Granted, there are some that are so shocking that the impact is clearly dissipated - Brooklyn returning from timedancing is one and Greg seemed to regret revealing Merlin's father. Certainly if the comics continue I'm a big fan of the spoilerphobe approach as I want to see what he presents in stories. However, during those fallow periods, I do think it makes a difference and helped make the property feel far more alive post-TGC than post-SLG, although also the fact that there was vastly less SLG material to speculate on and 96-06 was actually a shorter gap made a difference).

I agree, Jurgan, I was looking for the Ask Greg post too. However, I guess these days Ask Greg isn't the major platform it once was with Twitter etc. (and although I keep up with it, most of the questions seem to be YJ. Much as I love Greg's work, the DC-universe doesn't do it for me at all.)

Big thanks also to Greg B for putting the latest VftE up on Youtube as the podcast site was down. And of course, to the whole "Voices" team as ever - the podcast never disappoints.

Greg's comments on the Dynamite book were fascinating. I'm not exactly interested in the Marvel reprints but I want to support them though part of me wonders whether I'd be better putting the money I would have spent on an extra copy of the SLG books instead as I'd rather "vote with my wallet" for canon material than apocrypha I'm unlikely to ever even read.

A six-issue run sounds fair and a 3-weekly writing schedule certainly points to monthly releases. That said, it sounds like a fast turnaround for the end of the year. Very happy if that's the case but I'm reminded that when the SLG books were announced there was a hope they'd launch in autumn 2005 and the first issue was something like June 2006 and truly new stories with #3 weren't until March 2007! I'm fairly confident that Dynamite will have its act together a lot better than SLG who were really neophytes in managing a big licensed property but if there are any threats of delays (and I recall Disney were often the holdup before), I'd prefer they just start releasing later than have a choppy schedule.

What was interesting in the discussion was Greg being so evasive about picking up where SLG #12 finished off. This might just have been Greg's spoilerphobia but it was such an odd response that it almost felt like a hint by omission. Is it possible the main series jumps the tracks timeline-wise as he was apparently planning to do with "Dark Ages" and "Dream"? I'm not usually a massive fan of time jumps at the best of times and there's so much to explore in 1997 (not least the reaction to Brooklyn's return) that it would seem a big missed opportunity.

Having said that, I can see that the next story in his timeline might not necessarily lend itself to being a good reintroduction story. I mean, if there's a choice between, say, a new Pack or Dracon story and a new Demona story, one of those clearly has more "box office" potential. Another good reason for this is that whereas "Clan-Building" drew together material from multiple episode concepts and Greg's Marvel #12 script, it might be beneficial for a new mini-series to tell a more cohesive 6-issue-long story. While my preference as a fan would always be to follow the timeline, I can see good reasons to pick up with an eye-catching "tentpole" story several months or even a year or two later and then backfill if and when the comic is successful enough in the form of a "Season 3.5" mini-series or cannibalising the stories into spin-offs.

His comments also suggested that #1 would principally be reintroducing the world. Although he seems a little less enthusiastic about this one - and I get why, as it just delays the really new stuff still further - I think there's so much scope with the arrival of Nashville and Katana to see the world through fresh eyes that I still think it will be a fun read. One odd benefit of the huge hiatus is that now 1997 is not our present so Gnash actually makes a pretty good point-of-view character.

I just hope we can don't have the "characters explaining things they already know to each other" thing Goliath did in SLG #1...

Ed

WSe know that the Season Three stories Greg had planned, which weren't covered in "Clan-Building", were:

1. The trickster story that ALdrius just mentioned. (I remember Greg saying that he'd originally planned it to involve Puck, Raven, Anansi, and Coyote the Trickster, but then decided to drop Coyote and Anansi because four tricksters was just too complicated.)

2. The formation of the Ultra-Pack. (We got a bit of buildup to that at the end of "Clan-Building".) I'm still certain, by the way, that the Tasmanian Tiger will be the new member.

3. The passing of Halcyon Renard.

4. Maybe the notion of people being reluctant to give Goliath a trial because they believe that gargoyles are just weird creatures and that putting one on trial would be like putting a mountain lion on trial. (We're not certain, however, if he'd planned a full story for that, or if it would have been in Season Three.)

We know that Greg had eventually planned for Queen Mab's return, but we don't know if he'd imagined that as being Season Three.

Todd Jensen

As to the Gargoyles comic, I think it'd be smart to start small. Do smaller stories with tiny facets of the cast.

But I know Greg isn't going to do that. So I'd probably want more Bad Guys honestly. Or I mean just a good Xanatos caper would be fun. One story I've really always looked forward to was the multi-trickster "ransom" story.

One other David Warner role I forgot to mention - the Evil One in "Time Bandits". (Among his most memorable moments in it were the "black humor" scenes where he's casually disintegrating his followers - such as when one of them asks why, if he's as powerful as he claims to be, he can't escape from his prison; the Evil One promptly disintegrates him, then says "Good question.")
Todd Jensen

Really actually genuinely sad about David Warner's passing.

Guy was a legitimate legend, an inspiration to me as an actor and performer, and I loved him in everything he did. Unfortunately never had the chance to meet him.

For that matter, though there've been a few "Congratulations" posts in the queue at "Ask Greg" since the news came out, most of the questions there have been about "Young Justice". (Which does make sense - it's a property based on DC Comics, which is one of the big comic book companies, for a start.)
Todd Jensen

JURGAN - I've been surprised that there's been no ramble at "Ask Greg" about it as well.

"While I am very optimistic about the new comics coming out, I do have concern that they might consider the old Marvel Comics and Season 3 to be canon."

If you listen to the beginning of the most recent episode of Voices from the Eyrie, Greg makes it clear that the canonical material is limited to the 65 animated episodes and the SLG comics, plus whatever he's working on now.

Does anyone else think it's odd that Greg didn't post about the new comics here at s8? I expected a green-box ramble by now.

Hey all. It's been a while. Lurked for a time, then just disappeared. But the recent news has me rolling back into the fold. Thanks to Greg Bishansky for alerting me right away!

Despite being so hopeful for so long (and often getting on my soapbox to lecture others who'd lost hope), I think that a few years ago I resigned myself to believing that there would be no more new Gargoyles material. I should've heeded the final words of Clan Building ("Never the end!"). When I read that email from Greg Bishansky, my heart leapt and I gasped dramatically (true story). I'm thrilled to get whatever comes our way in the months (and years?!) ahead.

I suspect that Greg W will have to reintroduce the series again to some extent, so I would bet that he'll start with the basics: The Manhattan Clan. I've got no problem with that! I too would like to see how things play out since Clan Building. And, like Todd said, the establishment of a rookery would be especially poignant. And aren't we all still dying to know what Thailog is doing with those DNA samples?!

Further down the line, I'd love to see more of the Mayan Clan (perhaps my favorite clan and of the ones introduced so far, the one we've seen the least of). Perhaps with Jada and Turquesa visiting on their world tour or Zafiro or Obsidiana coming to retrieve the Sun Amulet (assuming the world tour pair doesn't, I always thought that would be a good reason for Avalon to send them to NYC).

Anyway, like I said, whatever we get, I'll be thrilled. And I'm back! I can't promise I'll be as ative as I was 15+ years ago either here or on the GargWiki, but I'll be around for sure. Very excited!

And thanks to all those who kept the fires burning and kept believing. And most of all thanks to Greg Weisman for writing these stories and working so hard to find ways to tell them to us.

Though I read the first issue of Young Justice: Targets back in June on DC Universe Infinite, today was the day I picked up my physical copies. I suspected that that was it, and agree that Greg might well have changed his mind since then.
Todd Jensen

Todd- I got that from the last Gathering in 2009, Mr. Weisman said he wanted a Dark Ages Story to tell, before Pendragon, I will check where I got the Timedancer story, from. But it could all change after nearly 15 years.
Kevin - [kevin dot nuckols at yahoo dot com]
Kevin Nuckols

Todd: That info most likely came from the various sources curated on the GargWiki -- At recent as the 2009 Gathering, there was talk that the next arc for the mainline would be Gargoyles: Manhattan, while the next few spin-off stories were being positioned and ordered as Dark Ages: Dream, then a Pendragon spin-off, then a TimeDancer spin-off.

But of course, nothing's done until its done. Out-of-universe Canon-in-Training, and thirteen year-old news at that. Plus, the current deal with Dynamite might not even allow for this kind of breakdown, and the various spin-offs might get absorbed into the main/only canon comic.

That said, this reminds me all when we were still speculating on the 'double-date' story in the years before and during the first few issues of the SLG run. Just enough to speculate, but really, there's no idea what fun is in store :D

Gus: "I always forget you're there." Hooty: "I forget I'm here toooooo."

Very sad to hear of David Warner's passing. I was fortunate to have met him once, many years back at Wales Comic Con. Wonderful man, always open to his fans. I could go on forever how brilliant David was as an actor and person, but I'll keep this short.

Obviously, he was fantastic as the Archmage in Gargoyles, but there are so many other roles I loved him for. Such as Doctor Who, when he played the Unbound Doctor for Big Finish Productions. I've always been a big lover for audio dramas and David's voice really suited that format, R.I.P (1941-2022).

Hope everyone is doing well by the way, it's been a very long time since I was last on here. I'll probably listen to Doctor Who: Sympathy for the Devil sometime today, in David's honour.

I just saw the Season 4 announcement and if I recall correctly, it will be a story about the Dark Ages, then a Timedancer, and then a King Arthur story. Although that might have changed since then maybe we will get a new story set in the relative present of 1998.

MATTHEW - The Warner line I particularly remember from "Freakazoid" was "I feel so... used." Followed by the grand song-and-dance number when he went out to a fancy restaurant - something like "Lobe-y's got a hearty appetite".
Todd Jensen

Todd Jensen> Yeah that can happen quite a bit.

I think the bit in Iron Man 2 where Tony is drunk and acting reckless at a party with his armor is an iffy scene, but RDJ makes it fun to watch.

And while say Batman & Robin in contrast to those examples is at best so bad it's good, you have a legit fun moment with John Glover as Dr. Jason Woodrue while he is present including his last line:

"Well, I can respect your opinion. Sadly, I'm not good at rejection. I'm afraid you'll have to die!"

Antiyonder

I remember at first I thought the voice of the Archmage was Jeremy Irons. They sound pretty similar to my ear, and I knew Irons had worked for Disney in The Lion King.

Also, I recently played through the original Fallout from 1997. It was voice directed by Jamie Thomason, so the cast reads like a Gargoyles reunion. https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout_voice_actors

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

In a further thought on David Warner as Ra's, I remember an episode of "Batman Beyond" which had Ra's return in the body of his daughter (he'd had a mind-switch with her after his last battle with Batman), and, when he revealed his presence in her body, the voice switched from hers to Warner's. Normally, I'm not keen on the idea of the mind-switched person speaking in the voice of the person whose consciousness is now inside, even if it's the easier route (I prefer the route that "Possession" took), but I forgave them for it - in an episode featuring Ra's, you've just got to bring David Warner's delivery in somewhere.
Todd Jensen

I think one of David Warner's more memorable roles was the Lobe from "Freakazoid!"
Imagine trying to be a classic comic book supervillain and you end up in an animated series that was the predecessor to meme humor.

Matthew
When you return to your unobservable but empirically determined dimension of origin--tell them CARL SAGAN sent you.

I recall not only David Warner's work as the Archmage but also as Ra's al Ghul in "Batman: TAS"; in fact, it's through his performance as Ra's that I became aware of the character. (I recall reading a "Young Justice" comic that featured Ra's, and while I knew that a different voice actor was doing Ra's in the animated series, I still mentally heard David Warner delivering his lines.)

Thanks for sharing your story idea with us, Jurgan. I always imagined Brooklyn's "Timedancing feudal Japan" adventure as involving the legend of Ushiwaka. (I don't know when Ushiwaka was supposed to have lived - if he had a place on the timeline at all and wasn't completely mythjical, though I assume he was well before the sixteenth century, when I know Nobunaga lived.)

Thanks for stopping by again, Ed.

Todd Jensen

So I remember when we got a better idea of the Quarryman group as intended:
1. Castaway opposed to reckless endangerment.

2.The public face is that they are a support group to help those feeling alone and scared.

As such the discussion suggesting that a pro-gargoyles group should in contrast consist of unhinged folks who cause public damage and endangerment in favor of protecting the gargoyles.

Thought about that again and how some TGC had citizens shouting out "Destroy the gargoyles" repeatedly.

Imagine it being "Protect the gargoyles" only sounding terrifying than hopeful.

Antiyonder

Sad news about David Warner.

Incredible news about the comic though. I must admit, I saw the article when it first went up but my reaction really puzzled me in that while, I could appreciate it was exciting news, but I didn't feel the pilot light on the hype. Partly that was just tiredness from work lately but I think also we're so wired for things not to work out for the franchise that I was just looking through trying to see where the other shoe would drop. The confirmation from Greg that the SLG series will be reprinted and that he's writing #1 kind of seals it though. Genuinely sensational and actually surprising, even though it shouldn't be given where the nostalgia wave is at.

Hopefully with the release window so soon, we'll get some flesh on the bones soon - awful lot of questions still. Artist? Let's hope Christopher Jones or Karine are available. Or Greg Guler, obviously. But definitely hoping for someone who can do the majority of issues. And will it be monthly? And what on Earth does "remastered" reprints mean? Could we see Bad Guys coloured as I seem to recall that going B&W was a stumbling block for the SLG deal being renewed? Or does it just mean that we're going to see the books in a different size?

In terms of what I'm looking forward to... to be perfectly honest... anything and everything. I do slightly prefer some aspects of the universe than others - I tend to enjoy the mutates a lot more than Coldstone for example - and there are big areas like the Illuminati and Queen Mab that intrigue me greatly. But while I love speculating and guessing with most things I watch and maybe I'll feel like doing that at some point, I feel like Greg just operates on a level of 4 dimensional chess where it's satisfying enough just to strap in and enjoy.

Ed

Yes and an example of how an actor's performance can shape a character or story.

Had the series been a comic to begin with? The Archmage would likely be that one time villain Weisman planned.

Heck Sokka's sparky nature from Avatar The Last Airbender is the result of actor Jack De Sena's reading of the lines.

Antiyonder

Sad news to hear, indeed.

"After all, what have you accomplished?! You beat up a beach!"

No doubt it was David Warner's delivery that made that line so memorable, and to this day its my favorite of all the Gargoyles easter eggs that we see in Greg Weisman's other works. Still hopeful to see it somewhere in Young Justice.

Gus: "I always forget you're there." Hooty: "I forget I'm here toooooo."

Ashamed of myself. Posted about his passing here and commented in a forum about his roles in comic based properties and I overlooked TMNT Secret of the Ooze.

Especially cause that was the first time I became aware of him.

Specifically his character Professor Jordan Perry from TGRI which was behind the mutagen like in the comics.

And as mentioned on various articles, forums and vids is that he was supposed to be revealed as an Utrom. But apparently it was scrapped since the majority of audiences being more familiar with the 1987 series would assume he was Krang.

Antiyonder

Man what a shame about David Warner, honestly I thought he was older than 80. Still his talents will be sincerely missed. I think I'll watch Tron in his memory.

Jurgan> I had a different idea in mind, I figured that the Ishimura Clan were vassals to the Tokugawa Shogunate (possibly to keep Ishimura from being destroyed). And while Ieyasu Tokugawa saw them as tools in his quest for unification, others like Date Masamune saw them as valuable commodities. Heck, maybe William Adams taught some the clan members English. Which would certainly help Brooklyn with communicating with the Clan.

Now I'm imagining the legendary ninja Kato Danzo aka "Flying Katao" was actually a gargoyle rather than a human.

I wouldn't mind if they came out with an encyclopedia of some sorts. Something that has brief character biographies, an episode list, and timeline.

Might be a nice spot to put some of the canon-in-training stuff in canon, like birth (or hatch) years, dates when the episode took place, and small character details.

Just a thought.

Adam

" Personally, I'd love to see more of Timedancer. How Brooklyn and Fu-Dog decided to become time-traveling companions, how the relationship Brooklyn and Katana started and developed. Heck, I want to know what she's like as a person. Really see how she'd choose to join Brooklyn across time and space, and give us a hint on how she'd contrast against other members of the Clan."

I speculated on this in a fanfic once. I had Katana working with Nobunaga Oda in a similar relationship as Demona/Macbeth. When she reached the point where I thought she was going to leave with Brooklyn, I just couldn't make her do it. It was a big moment for me as a writer, learning to listen to what a character would do rather than force them into the plot. I had ideas to expand it to a full City of Stone parallel, the difference being that at the pivotal moment Nobunaga absolutely would have betrayed the gargoyles to end the war more quickly. After that, it would have been an easy choice for her to abandon feudal Japan.

Todd Jensen> Which reminds me. Even when I read of Weisman's Master Plans way back in 2000 (Damn we're old geezers), it never did occur to me that Mary and Finella might have any importance beyond setting up Xanatos' alliance with Demona.

Now I'm wondering what plans there are for them after their confirmed living status in the relative present (1997).

I think one mentioned plan for a story was Angela taking Broadway to Avalon to meeting the rest of her clan. Now I could see Mary (possibly Finella) joining along.

So would the four of them have an Avalon World Tour of sub plot?

Antiyonder

A minor point, but if we get the story of how Brooklyn arranged Xanatos and Demona's meeting, I wonder if we'll find out who Xanatos bought Castle Wyvern from. I found myself wondering that when I re-watched "Awakening Part Two" for the 25th anniversary of "Gargoyles", back in 2019, after the "Make the offer now, Owen" line.

I'm certain that the castle was privately owned, since I can't imagine even Xanatos buying it from the National Trust or Historic Scotland. But that's as far as I dare speculate.

Todd Jensen

And depressingly after discussing the Archamge story I find this: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-62219839

6th for Goliath, Hudson, Brooklyn, Broadway, Lexington, and Bronx.

Looking forward to this comment room being active again.

Adam

Matthew> "4" one thing (XD), besides what you said:

1. Finally seeing the full extent of Brooklyn's responsibility in helping the Scotland/Manhattan Clan to undo the spell in 1994.

2. The story with Archmage Plus. Not even simply Brooklyn having to deal with him, but just cause of seeing the point in which the encounter happened.

Did it happen when Archdale Plus was mentoring the original Archdale? Wss it during the bit where Goliath was trying to remove the Eye of Odin from him and the two were teleporting around?

If it's the latter, does Brooklyn having to deal with Archdale Plus while trying to hide from Goliath? Or does Goliath become privy prior to 97 that Brooklyn would being traveling through the timestream?

3. If we get Dark Ages, I'm wondering if we would get a story during the flashback sequence of Vows only from the 975 AD side.

Much like the Gargoyles Saga Dark Ages story with that premise, would we get some more of what Xanatos, Fox and Petros were up to?

Antiyonder

Speaking of "Timedancer", I'd like to see what the clan will be like with the new members (two new gargoyles, one a "pre-adolescent", a new gargoyle beast, and an egg - the first egg that the clan's had since the Wyvern Massacre). I still have a vision of the clan building a rookery for Eggwardo, a small rookery since it's just one egg, but important for its symbolism.

One story I hope we'll get is the "Weird Macbeth". I'd particularly like to see who'd be cast as Malcolm, Banquo and Fleance, the Porter, and (in light of who'd be playing his parents) Young Macduff.

I'd like a few more Quarrymen stories as an antidote to how the "Goliath Chronicles" handled that element.

And, if we get more "Pendragon" in the comics, some exploration of how Peredur manages to reconcile being the guardian of the Holy Grail with running a secret society that does things I can't imagine the Grail approving of.

Todd Jensen

With that in mind, I'd like to pose this question to the chat, what canon are you looking forward to being expanded? I know we're all eager for what awaits the Clan, but is there some specific for you personally?

Personally, I'd love to see more of Timedancer. How Brooklyn and Fu-Dog decided to become time-traveling companions, how the relationship Brooklyn and Katana started and developed.
