And now it's sold out. 10 minutes.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

Never mind. They backdoored the link; it's available on the normal website front page right now. You can request a room at either of the two main hotels right now (maybe - I heard one is already not coming up but I got both) but it's just one room and it's a request, not a formal booking/reservation. Off-site hotels are listed with contact numbers. All will have shuttle service to CONvergence.

Best of luck to anyone looking to get a room. I don't yet know if I'll have one yet (or if anyone else already needs to room with me), but if I do and people need a place to crash, I'll post about it here.

To anyone looking to get a room at the CONvergence hotel...the servers went boom as soon as the link was supposed to go live. What a shock.

I'm keeping an eye on it. If anyone wants me to book a block of several rooms when it gets fixed (I'm booking at least two right now), email me or post in here, because as soon as I can get in, I'm putting in the reservations.

Todd> Good point. I used the wrong word.
Supermorff

SUPERMORFF - I don't know if "rebooted" is the right word, since that suggests that the new series was set in a different continuity than the original one (think the difference between "Batman:TAS" and "The Batman" or "The Spectacular Spider-Man" and "Ultimate Spider-Man", say), while the Doctor of the new "Doctor Who" is depicted as the same Doctor as the one from the original series. They just make it accessible to new viewers by only bringing in elements from the original series when they're crucial to the story, and mostly just using the basics (the Doctor, the TARDIS, the sonic screwdriver, and a couple of monsters from the original series like the Daleks).

ESG> Well if you're not content with how much Gargs uses it, there're other cartoons that play up reincarnation as a central theme. Beast Machines, Yu-Gi-Oh! (though moreso its spin off series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX), etc. It's played around with in different shows if you demand that focus.

Because Gargoyles probably couldn't win with that level of fascination with reincarnation and the focus your criteria demands. Which is fine, of course, but yeah. It's too varied to make reincarnation such a central theme, especially considering a lot of the show is thematically centered on going forward, rather than backwards. Rory and Bronx represent renewal, but exploring reincarnation in any other context might border on antithetical unless you had a superb story for it.

Harlan Smellison
You actually defeated Captain Corn. That's really something.

Anthony> Yes, that's a fine place to start. The first episode is "Rose". The series was rebooted in 2005, and it allows people with no prior knowledge of the show to jump on.
Supermorff

I hate to bring up Doctor Who again, but it's kind of gotten be curious since I've been reading about it and there seems to be a lot of fans of the show that come here, so question for those people:

I noticed that Netflix has 6 series streaming from 2005 - 2011. Should I watch them having never watched any episodes prior? Like is that a good place to start? Will I understand what is going on?

Anthony Tini

For anyone going to CONvergence 2014, the host of the next Gathering of the Gargoyles, hotel room requests go live on January 5th at 1:00pm, CST: http://www.convergence-con.org/2013/12/room-request-goes-live/ The rooms will probably sell out very quickly. The Double Tree will contain most of the convention while the Sheraton may have some overflow programming and is right next door. If you don't get in, they say there will be shuttles to alternate hotels.

Harlan Ellison? Where? Where?
Greg Bishansky
Here's the problem with most fanfic writers: they seem to think Dominique is a second life. It isn't. Demona spelled it plainly in "High Noon." She's a gargoyle. Dominique is just a tool to help her in her goals. She'll use the form because she changes into a human, whether she likes it or not, but Dominique is not another life for her.

Harlan Ellison> The thing with a reincarnation plot is that you can't just throw it in. You have to focus on it, or else it's really lame. Like, retroactively adding in the story of a past reincarnation to one of the main cast wouldn't accomplish much, especially if it just needlessly explained their actions as established in a past life. If reincarnation plays any role in a character's story, it typically has to be one of the most integral parts of them. That's one of the reasons I appreciate Rory Dugan's character and wish very much to see more of him.
ESG

ESG> Reincarnation is cool, but I do like it in the small, nebulous doses we've gotten so far. Not every character narratively fits that sort of thing, even if everyone technically does from a theological/spiritual perspective.

I like that reincarnation exists alongside other afterlives like ghosts and what have you. Little bit of everything. All things are true, after all.

James Avery played the Shaman? Man, I'm really sad now... I loved Fresh Prince... very sad to hear.

RIP James Avery.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Aw, Shaman is dead? And to top it off, Shredder too?! This is a solemn day, indeed.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

One thing that bugs me is that we only see obvious reincarnation once in the series. Reincarnation is a fascinating concept, deserving of much focus. And the very idea that any given character could be a reincarnation brings many potential stories to mind.
ESG

Sorry for the double post but I had few spelling mistakes *Shaman* and *Original*, sorry about that the 12 hour shift at work got to me

Happy New Year everyone but got some sad news that James Avery, Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince has passed away, he did the voice of Shredder in orignal TMNT and also did the voice of the Sharman in the Gargoyles episode Walkabout. RIP James Avery

Todd Jensen> "And next year will see "Gargoyles"'s twentieth anniversary."

Don't forget the return of The Gathering within another convention FOR said twentieth anniversary.

2013 is almost over, this year I finally started commenting on this site and got to meet Greg (he's a pretty cool guy) as well.

2013 is almost over. The year that saw the latter half of Season Two of "Gargoyles" released on DVD at last, and the publication of "Rain of the Ghosts". And next year will see "Gargoyles"'s twentieth anniversary.
Actually, I interpret it as a functioning time loop. Gallifrey was NEVER destroyed in the first place. The Doctors simply forgot that because of their interaction with their own timeline. Which has always been standard fair for Doctor Who. First and Second didn't really recall their interaction with Third in "The Three Doctors" Ditto for "The Five Doctors". War forgot what he actually did, and assumed that he went forward with his plan. Thus, the guilt that haunted him for three Regenerations after. But as hinted at when we finally met him, and as pointed out in the episode...He was just as much the Doctor as any of them. He was disowned...But now that 11 remembers what REALLY happened, he is indeed considered "The Doctor" once more. That doesn't necessarily change the Doctors. 11th is still the 11th Doctor. Only now it goes by regeneration number, not incarnation number. The Second Doctor was the Doctor's FIRST regeneration after all. The War Doctor was the 8th regeneration. Ninth Doctor, Ninth Regeneration.
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. ~~C.S. Lewis
Of course, there's some question over whether Hurt's Doctor counts, since he was disowned by his successors for his actions in the Time War, actions that they considered unworthy of being the Doctor - so while he's a past incarnation, he wasn't considered the Doctor in the same sense that they were. Though the events in "The Day of the Doctor", where he and Tennant and Smith's Doctors undid the destruction of Gallifrey, might have changed that; Hurt's Doctor *does* show up in the ending credits sequence between McGann's and Eccleston's, suggesting that he's been forgiven and admitted into the fold.

Changing that, of course, means losing the pun on David Tennant being the Tenth Doctor - pity.
PHOENICIAN - I'm glad to hear that you've got a review planned for "Rain of the Ghosts"; it would be great to see more of those at "Ask Greg". (Most of the questions still revolve around "Young Justice". Of course, the new game might have something to do with that. And since we'll be getting at least one more book in the "Rain of the Ghosts" series (and let's do all that we can to make sure Greg gets to have all nine published), there may not be as much incentive for asking questions as there is for a series which is now (for the moment) over.

Todd Jensen

Todd> It seems it didn't matter, since Phoenician clearly didn't read it. John Hurt. Not Eccleston. Eccleston is next. Hurt comes before him.

Ninth! or Christopher Eccleston.

And Harlan, yep -- definitely loved Rain of the Ghosts as well :)

But no real thorough comments from me (yet), as I'm still writing my review for the queue (oh, the holiday season: taking up all that free times) . . . d:

CHIP - I wonder if you should have put the bit about John Hurt's character in "Spoiler" tags. Of course, it might have already become one of those open secrets like "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are the same guy" (Robert Louis Stevenson intended that to be a big-shock revelation) - or, for this room, "Owen and Puck are the same guy".

(It does remind me of an episode they did where the Doctor met Agatha Christie; at one point, his companion gives away the ending to "Murder on the Orient Express". At least she didn't give away the ending to "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd", which featured in that episode.)

Matt> Partially because last month was the fiftieth anniversary of the show. And this month a NEW actor has taken up the role. And partially because the countdown was incorrect last time, due to a recent retcon within the show. John Hurt is the "War Doctor" fitting into the slot between the 8th and 9th Doctors. I suspect that people wish to see the "proper" order listed here.

And incidentally, Vinnie, Jon Pertwee is Three.

Todd> *Facepalm* I knew that. I just posted rather late last night and was tired.

Sylvester McCoy.

I've never watched the show. Maybe I'd like it, maybe I wouldn't. What baffles me is why we have to have it be part of the countdown at least once a month (seemingly).

As we've already done the countdown in honor of New Years early and someone who couldn't be here this late asked it of me, I'll kick things off once again with the actors who've played The Doctor (especially since the newest actor has officially taken up the role as of Christmas). Let's see if this one gets all the way to thirteen.

William Hartnell!
