since Cuchalin had a garg beast, is it safe to presume that there was once at least one garg clan in Ireland?
if so, what was this clans relationship to the feud between Cuchalin and the Banche if any? was the clan not involved, Cuchalin's allies, etc....
Yes, at one point there was an Irish garg clan. No more details are currently forthcoming.
are the English gargoyles the only gargoyles that resemble mammals? all the other clans we saw resembled medieval demons, not that they are demons or anything...
hmmm, i don't think your going to respond to the question in the way i intended, but i'm not sure i know how to rephrase it.
Your premise is faulty.
you said that Katherine, Tom and the Magus imitated gargoyle customs, which the Magus had knowledge of, when raising the eggs. what did they do to raise a hatchling in gargoyle fashion?
As much as they could and knew how to.
Greg,
I am sorry that you misunderstood me. Here was my first question...
Justin writes...
Quick question,
You have mentioned that not all of the currently existing clans have names. So by the time of The Journey, how many of the clans have names? ( Not including London, Manhattan, Labyrinth, Ishimura, Avalon and Guatemala.) And which ones?
To which you replied,
Greg responds...
Huh? I'm not sure what you mean by names?
1. The London Clan. London, England.
2. The Ishimura Clan. Ishimura, Japan.
3. The Mayan Clan. ChacIxChel, Guatemala.
4. The Korea Clan. Pukhan, Korea.
5. The Xanadu Clan. Xanadu, China.
6. The Loch Ness Clan. Loch Ness, Scotland.
7. The New Olympian Clan. Mount Thanatos, New Olympus.
8. The Avalon Clan. Oberon's Palace, Avalon.
9. The Manhattan Clan. New York, U.S.A.
10. The Labyrinth Clan. New York, U.S.A.
recorded on 03-02-01
When I asked about the names what I meant to ask was how many of use names other than the clans I have mentioned above.
Off the record I really enjoyed the information you gave though :)
Thanks again man!
Uh, you mean how many of the Gargoyles in those clans use names? I'm not answering that now.
What legends were the Korean clan based on?
What legends were the Xanadu clan based on?
What legends were the Loch Ness Clan based on?
It's not quite that straight forward.
And also, I don't want to tip my hand.
Who is going to the gargoyle leader of the labyrinth clan?
In what era?
Right now, Talon is the leader.
Why didn't we see the Loch Ness clan in Monsters?
I was saving it.
do the pendant wearing gargoyles in Guatemala have to sleep as a human does to rest their bodies or does the pendant's magic cover that too?
They have to rest periodically. Sometimes they nap as humans do. Sometimes they take off the pendants and sleep as stone. But the magic also helps compensate. SO ALL OF THE ABOVE, I guess.
i was wondering what your thoughts were on the fact that the English rid their lands of gargoyles before many other gargoyle/human relationships fell apart. in Scotland, Japan, Guatemala, and probably other clan locations, humans and gargs were getting along alright in the 1000's but the English got rid of the gargs, why? what really bugs me about them doing this is that like in many other places in the world, gargoyles were having an effect on myth and culture, more so in England than many other places. gargoyles seemed to have been a very positive influence in England because lions, unicorns, griffons, etc. all became English symbols of honor, strength, courage, and power, why use and keep these symbols when banishing the people who influenced them, the gargs? unless somethng happened in England to make them hate gargs alot, i don't understand how a people could honor a people and then turn around and banish them...
England considered itself more civilized. They weren't the only "nation" (and I use the term loosely and anachronistically) to get rid of their 'goyles. And England did a worse job than most.
What are all the names of the gargoyles on avalon.
Pass.
what are some of the other names of gargoyles on Avalon? i'd imagine most biblical angel names were used, but Opheila, Angela, and Boibekka all have other types of names, what were some of these?, if you know any
Boudicca, not Boibekka.
I've answered this. I believe that Katharine did attempt at least to use all the standard Angelic names...
Gabriel, Michael, Azrael, Raphael, Uriel, etc.
Plus some variations like Angela.
But they had more gargs than angels.
So we get Ophelia, etc.
Anyway, I don't plan on tying my hand by naming a bunch of characters I haven't yet explored.
Greg;
I am a little confused on Gargoyle Generations... let's see if this is correct.
Ex)
Hudson - Gen 1
Goliath/Demona Gen 2
Trio/Bronx Gen 3--|
| |- from same gen, but different hatching
Angela Gen 3------|
Samson (Is that his name?) Gen 4
1) Is this basically a correct assumption?
2) Does a Gargoyle ALWAYS find a mate in his hatching? IE) did all the Avalon Gargoyles pair off?
3) If the above is not true, then, would a Garoyle look to the next hatching, or would they be too young?
1. No, not at all.
2. Not necessarily.
3. It depends when he or she is looking. Yama and Sora are from different generations. But they didn't get together when she was a kid.
1. will Tom and/or Katherine live to see Gabriel, Opheila, and Boudikka and the other Avalon gargoyle's eggs hatch?
2. will the Avalon clan continue the naming of the hatchlings?
3. will they have a rookery or will they raise their eggs and hatchling's individually as humans do?
oh, and i was thinking about the Earth rythmn and its effects on gargs reproductive cycles on Avalon and i thought that maybe Avalon produces its own rythmn that may mimic or duplicate the rythmn of the Earth so that Opheila and the rest still lay eggs and hatch as if they were in the real world. afterall, from what evidence we've seen in the series and that you've given us, Avalon doesn't seem to be a place you can locate on Earth, just a theory...
1. Not gonna answer that.
2. Yes.
3. Rookery. They know that much.
The cycles tie together. The math is excruciating for me, but I've managed it. I think.
among the British gargs would a female gargoyle that has the lion genes still have the mane that Leo has? i would think she would because Leo is not a lion and while he looks like one probably shares very few of the same characteristics of a lion.
i've also noticed that Maggie the Cat has lion genes and is the only mutate with hair and i assume this is because of the animal she was mutated from but of course Leo wasn't created from a lion...
There is a chameleonesque characteristic (metaphorically) to the various superficial gargoyle differences that seem so pronounced. That might suggest a female of Leo's type might look lioness-esque as opposed to Lion-esque. But it might not. I hate to tie my hand frankly, or rather I hate to tie the artists hands in advance.
Quick question,
You have mentioned that not all of the currently existing clans have names. So by the time of The Journey, how many of the clans have names? ( Not including London, Manhattan, Labyrinth, Ishimura, Avalon and Guatemala.) And which ones?

3. The Mayan Clan. ChacIxChel, Guatemala.

9. The Manhattan Clan. New York, U.S.A.
10. The Labyrinth Clan. New York, U.S.A.
Greg,
You have mentioned that there is a clan in Korea.
1)Where in Korea is this clan located?
2)Who is the leader of the clan?
3) Have they had a massacre recently? Or do the Koreans in the area even know they exist?
4) In 1998 did the clan have a rookery?
5) Will any Korean gargs play a part in future story lines?
6) Of the 12 Existing clans; how many is the Illuminati aware of?
Thanks
1. Pukhan, Korea. This clan lives in tunnels and caves that run through the mountains along the Pukhan River.
2. Don't know yet.
3. No full-scale massacre, if that's what you mean.
3a. There are legends.
4. Yes.
5. Yes.
6. In 2001, there are not 12 existing clans. There are 10, including Avalon, Manhattan and the Labyrinth. And the Illuminati probably know about fewer than you think.
in "M.I.A." Griff mentions that Goliath looks like scottish stock.
did Griff know about the Loch Ness Clan in Scotland?
did he figure that Goliath was a member of this clan?
The London Clan has a library.
Greg,
Hey a few more questions.
1) Who is Kai's mate?
2) By the time of the Journey how old is Kai biologically?
3) How many children have Kai and his mate produced? And what years did they hatch?
4) Have Yama and Sora had a child yet?
Thanks again
1. No one that we've really met.
2. The same age as Leo and Una.
3. Biological children?
4. No. Sora's too young.
when garg clans were all over the world did the clans ever have "clan protectorate" boundry lines the way we have national borders? i'm mainly refering to the clans of the British isles since there seemed to be more clans there and they are closer to each other, like the Wyvern, break-off Wyvern, Loch Ness, and London clans, and i'm sure there were once many more, so did they ever have boundries between their protectorates?
More like vague territories.
Dear Greg,
1)Why are the London gargoyles only limited to lions, horses and birds? That seems kinda silly.
2) How many eggs hatched to the London clan in 1998?
3) How many beasts does this clan have?
4) How many children do Leo and Una have?
5) Will Griff find a mate?
6) Why is Una the leader?
7)Shouldn't one of the younger generation take over?
Thanks
1. You're thinking about this backwards. You might as easily ask why are the Wyvern gargoyles limited to what you've seen of them? And at any rate, you've got it wrong. The London gargs vaguely resemble various combinations of Griffin, Winged Lion and Winged Unicorn.
2. I'm not going to answer this at this time.
3. Ditto.
4. Many clan-children.
5. Not telling.
6. That's complex. Why is Goliath the leader? It's how things turned out. I will say, that she's highly intelligent, and has done a good job at keeping the clan safe.
7. Eventually. What's your hurry?
dear greg.
as i am in england, our flipping(tm)english t.v studios have not show the intire series,so i missed out of half the gargoyles,i never even got to see goliath and elisa kiss.
i am intrested in the characters kai and his clan, could you tell me what kai is like as a person, and his clan
thanks you forever for thinking of this wonderful cartoon
Kai is a dedicated leader of the old school, literally. He is Bushido master in Ishimura. His clan has lived in peace and secrecy with the humans of Ishimura for centuries.
What else do you want to know?
Try to be specific.
In gargoyle society we see how males and females are considered equal like in Goliath's clan but is there
a gargoyle clan in which males are dominant?
No.
by "Ill met by Midnight" are Gabriel and Opheila allready chosen mates or do they decide that later? seeing as how Tom and Katherine are human and raised the gargs as brothers and sisters in a human fashion what is T and K's reaction to the coupling of the eggs? if i am wrong in how they were raised than correct me, please, but neither Tom nor Katherine was very knowledgable in garg customs, were they? did they raise the gargs in a garg way as best they could or just as they would human children and garg instincts took over for the rest?
Moonlight, not midnight.
You're mostly wrong. I think Tom and Katharine and the Magus realized that these eggs represented an entire generation, not just a bunch of siblings. Relationships developed. Some fraternal, others romantic. The humans attempted to mimic gargoyle customs, which the Magus had some information on.
And Gabe and Ophelia were certainly romantically involved by Ill Met.
do all the clans of 1996 have beasts, or at least beast eggs?
Maybe.
i have a question about gargoyle customs. you've said that Opheila is Gabriel's second in command and for a time, Demona was Goliath's second, is it common among gargs to choose their mate as second? if so, isn't that unfair to the other gargs hoping to become second, or am i thinking too much like a human?
You're generally thinking too much like a human.
The bigger issue over time is age. A second should be in a position to be groomed to take over for his leader, either in case of an emergency (as when Brooklyn took over for Goliath during the World Tour) or in the case of succession, as when the older Hudson stepped down in favor of the younger Goliath.
Had things gone differently at Wyvern, eventually either Demona would have stepped down to allow a new second to be chosen from the younger generation (most likely Brooklyn) OR Goliath would have stepped aside to allow Demona to lead and chose a new younger Second (again, most likely Brooklyn).
It's largely a meritocracy otherwise. Hudson chose Goliath as his second based on a myriad of positive qualities but primarily integrity, intelligence, natural leadership abilities and a genuine ferocity in battle.
Goliath in turn selected Demona for the same qualities. *He was just mistaken about the integrity.*
As for Avalon, the situation is a bit different, as all the gargs there are of the same generation. Originally Gabriel was chosen as leader and one of his many rookery-siblings Angela was chosen as his second. When Angela left, Gabriel did select his mate as his second, at least for the time being. But you can bet Ophelia was qualified -- look how she performed even when wounded in Avalon Part Three -- or he would not have chosen her. Does nepotism play a part. Possibly. But I'd think that the qualities necessary would have to be even more obvious to avoid charges of nepotism.
In London, Una is the leader of the clan. Her second, whom we have not yet met, is of a younger generation and generally runs things at their more rural (or at least suburban) estate.
In Japan, Kai was the leader. Yama, of a younger generation, was his second. After Yama's banishment, Yama's mate Sora was probably chosen as Second (though don't hold me to that). Again Sora's chosen for her attributes and (relative) youth. Someday -- short of a catastrophe taking place -- she will lead the clan in Kai's place.
In Guatemala, Zafiro is the leader. His second is not his mate Obsidiana, but Turquesa, Jade's mate. They are all of the same generation, but they are also the only gargs alive down there at the moment. (Not counting the eggs.)
Happy New Year, Greg. My question focuses on the Chinese clan. You mentioned that Fu Dog came from there, and that he was named that because he looked like a foo-dog. In case you were unaware (though I seriously doubt it), the foo-dog is actually a representation of a lion. Lions aren't native to China, but their image was present on gifts given to the Chinese Emperor. Lion statues were then built at the entrance of temples, tombs and official buildings to guard them and ward off evil. They became associated with Buddha ("Fo" in Chinese) and were also called "lions of Korea" and "shismi dogs".
So my question is (in three parts):
1a) Does Fu Dog really resemble a lion? (you said in a post once that you had "a fairly clear idea" of Fu Dog's design).
b) If so, do the majority of the other members of the Chinese clan also resemble mammals, as the London clan does?
c) If your answer to "b" is no, would their general physical structure be closer to Goliath's, or Zaphiro's, or something all-together different?
Keep in mind, legends always have a basis in truth. That doesn't mean they are wholey accurate. Fu Dogs were probably based (in the gargoyles universe) on Chinese gargoyle beasts.
1a. There may be some passing resemblance to a lion.
1b. You're jumping to conclusions, which I'll neither confirm or deny.
1c. My answer to b wasn't no.
Hey Greg,
1)Who is the leader of the London clan right now?
2)Who is his/her second? Now.
3)In M.I.A. we only saw three gargoyles that belonged to this clan. What other types of animals could these gargoyles look like? Say Gorillas? Llamas? Dogs? What?
Thank you
1. Una.
2. We haven't met that garg yet.
3. No. What you saw is what you get.
[1] The first time I watched _Possession_ I pretty much took it for granted how much Coldfire and Coldsteel resembled 'Desdemona' and 'Iago'. It makes sense when you're used to half-baked comic book logic (not to disrespect your own fine work in the field), but Gargoyles takes great pains to create a more, erm, well-done and realistic (or at least snarkily pseudo-scientific :P) universe. On later viewings, I was compelled to contemplate further. The techniques used in creating the Steel Clan wouldn't apply here, I think. The techies at Scarab Corp. (or wherever) probably had lots of old security tapes of Goliath to pore over as much as they liked, but it's hard to imagine how that'd work with the Legionnaires. Was the likeness of design only in animation, then?
[2] Likewise, with the the WWII statue in London, which off-the-bat was recognizable as being of Goliath and Griff. Was its sculptor working solely off of Sir Douglas' accounts? (Pilots are generally more observant than the average bear, and from the impression he made on you as a kid, he musta made one heckuva eyewitness. It still is kind of a stretch, though...)
1. You're forgetting Puck. And various memory chips inside Coldstone.
2. I always thought that that statue was funded by Leo and Una. Ostensibly as a memorial to the Battle of Britain, but really as a memorial to Griff and Goliath.
Dear Greg,
You mentioned that Bronx and Boudicca are mates, and that they will mate again. Will any from the Avalon clan (Including Boudicca) go to Manhattan?
Thanx
Boudicca's already been once.
There may be exchange programs worked out in the future.
Dear Greg,
When do suppose the New Olympian clan will make there presence known? You have mentioned that they are somewhat isolationist even with the New Olympians, so it seems unlikely that they would willingly venture into the outside world.
It'll be a while.
Griff was going to be Una's mate but dissappeared before they could and she ended up mating with Leo, correct? if so, isn't that quite wierd for all three of them now that Griff is back, he obviously must've had feelings for Una and now her and his friend are together. would all this have anything to do with the reason Griff decided to stay with Arthur and not return to London?
Yes. And yes.
okay, Zafiro and Obsidiana are mates, and Jade and Turquesa are mates, correct? were they all mates before the Guatemalan clan was destroyed or after? i ask this cuz i wonder if they became mates with each other for the continuation of the clan (after the massacre) or it was coincidence that the four pendant wearers were also mates.
Maybe not coincidence, but they were already mates.
The not coincidence part is that if you are thrown together often enough, something might spark.
is there a clan leader of the Avalon clan? is it Gabriel or do they consider Goliath to be their clan leader?
Gabriel is the leader.
how many eggs are in guatemala in 1996?
what year were the other clan members destroyed?
having the ability to function in daylight, wouldn't it be a top priority for the pendant wearers to watch over the pyramid, clan, and amulet during the day? why then were ALL four of them away the day the pyramid was raided and the clan destroyed? were they tricked?
I don't think they were intentionally tricked, but it worked out that way.
I don't have the chronology solidified yet, but I figure there are between twenty and forty eggs.
1)What is the world population of gargoyles in 1996 excluding gargoyle beasts?
1. I don't know exactly.
Do the trio have any blood-siblings on Avalon>
Potentially.
You must have reached this point in your timeline: When were Griff, Leo and Una hatched?
1898.
And no, I haven't gotten to M.I.A. either in the present. But because I knew it had a flashback scene, I actually did the 1940 stuff before I started on the other episodes. That lead to figuring out their hatchdate.
I was looking through the archives and i found that you had said a LONG time ago that Yama was in his late twenties (biologically) in 1996. doesn't this mean that he already has had the oppurtunity to mate (at 20)? also, how many generations older is Kai than Yama and Sora?
I'm still working on my timeline revision, and I haven't gotten to these details as yet. I'm currently working on December of 1995, so I haven't yet dealt with the episode Bushido in any detail, and thus the ramifications of that episode -- even those that predate 1995 -- still haven't been accounted for in the revised document. Instead of guessing, I'd rather you give me the next six months to figure it out correctly once and for all. My goal is to be done by the next Gathering in Los Angeles.
I was wondering, you know all the Gargoyles on Avalon? Would they every rejoin the Gargoyles in New York? If so for what reason?
I'm not sure what you mean by "rejoin".
Clan questions:
1) In the Egyptian episode, "Grief," Angela suggests that the sphinx looks like giant gargoyle. We know from the clans contest that there is not currently a clan in Egypt. Was there at one time an Egyptian clan that died out or was destroyed?
2) On a related note, you said that the New Olympus gargoyles left Greece with the New Olympians. Again from the clan contest we know that there is not currently a Greek clan. Assuming there was once a Greek clan, did they all go to New Olympus, or did some stay behind to die out or be destroyed?
3) I'm not asking you to tell the stories now, but do you have them planned out for use perhaps in Timedancer?
(Note: I'm thinking about gathering a list of "untold stories" you've hinted at. [Greg replies: "I know, but I'm not telling now."] The more unanswered questions I come up with, the more eager and impatient I am for the return of Gargoyles.)
1. Possibly.
2. The latter. Though not all the New Olympian gargs came from Greece. Some came from other mediterranean locations.
3. Which stories?
why do gargoyles eventually colonize Queen Florence Island? is it because their numbers are so small that if they don't all group together they'll go extinct?
It's actually out of the successful rebounding of the species that they decide to add a new clan. They have largely maxed out the capacity of the twelve sites they have.
did the gargoyle clans in the americas migrate over the bering strait from asia with the humans or did the get there some other way?
You mean the Mayan clan? Yes, probably.
Cause the Manhattan clan was shipped over in boxes. The Labyrinth clan was cloned from the Manhattan Clan, and the Queen Florence Island clan will someday be made up of Gargs who colonize it from all over the world. (But that won't be for a while.)
About when did the London clan first open the magic shop? (If you don't know the exact year, then the general period in English history that you see it take place - i.e., Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian, etc.)
Pre-Tudor.
Ishimura Clan questions:
1. After seeing the memo recently posted on naming schemes used in the series, I was wondering if any specific pattern was used with the Ishimura clan?
2. I don't know how involved you were with the individual names of the Ishimura clan, but what does Kai's name mean? Sora and Yama have only one kanji character associated with their names (yama: "mountain, hill, knoll," sora: "sky, heavens, air"), but there are over 40 kanji characters that are pronounced "KAI".
1. I believe so. Yama means mountain, and I vaguely recall that the other names Sora and Kai meant something too. Can't remember what anymore, though. Sorry.
2. Oh. So Sora means sky. That just leaves Kai. Might it mean "Leader"? I just can't remember. But you can ask Story Editor Gary Sperling at the 2001 Gathering in Los Angeles this June.
Which Gargoyle clan excluding the Manhatten, labrinth, and Avalon clans have the largest population of Gargoyles?
I haven't counted.
Does the stuff in the gargoyles bible saying that gargoyles are dragons in China still true?
thats not exactly what the bible said
Greg:
Did gargoyles ever travel to india
Ever? Sure. Migrated.
Is the survival of the Loch Ness monster and the Loch Ness Clan has anything to do with each other?
yes.
In the episode Bushido Yama told Goliath that the ishimera clan has been hiding from the outside world for centuries. In a way Yama really wants his clan to be revealed to the outside world which is very foolish since there are humans out there like the insane psychopath Jon Castaway that have dedicated their lives to the destruction of gargoyles my question is why do some gargoyles want their race to be reveiled to humans even they know it is very dangerous to do so?
Because ultimately hiding is equally dangerous, with no chance of there being any positive change. It is a game of diminishing returns. The irony of Yama's position is that he's generally right, but he got the specifics wrong. Specifically, he trusted the wrong human.
Questions on the London clan of gargoyles
1) How did the London clan aquire the occult shop "In to the Mystic"?
2) How did they get the mansion that the clan is primary based in?
1. Long story.
2. Another long story.
any reason why there are so few clans in the southern hemisphere??? or were there alot of clans "down there" and they all happened to be wiped out?
There used to be more clans everywhere. But most were wiped out.
Where exactly in China is Xanadu? If you can't tell us that could you give us a general location like what province it is in?
Xanadu is hidden amid the rocky northern mountains of China.
How many Gargs were in Demona's clan when she was allied with MacBeth(in the years after he had become king, I mean)? Any beasts? Offspring?
I don't think there were any beasts. There were quite a few gargoyles at different times. As for off-spring, I'd have to look at my timeline, which I don't have with me. Maybe.
Where in Korea is the Korean Gargoyle Clan?
What legends inspired you to put a clan there?
1. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I don't have that infor here with me now.
HOLD ON. I take that back. I do have it.
The Korean Clan of Gargoyles is located in tunnels and caves that run through the mountains along the Pukhan River.
2. One that Frank Paur told me about.
Some questions about the Korean clan:
1)Whereabouts in Korea do the clan live? North or South?
2)What role did they play in the Korean War? Did they help as a clan or did only a few gargoyles help individually like Griff in WWII, presuming that the gargoyles did help in the war.
3a)Do they interact well with the humans that live in Korea (b)Do the humans in Korea know about the gargoyles living there?
4)How well is the clan doing in numbers? Strong, weak, in the middle?
1. I don't have that information with me. And I wouldn't want to get it wrong.
2. Individuals played a role. But not the role of warriors.
3a. That's a matter of opinion.
3b. There are legends.
4. Middle.
Hi Greg,
Now I got you :)! In "City of stone" we see, that Demona is the leader of a little clan, that is robbing scotland. The first time I saw the ep, there was nothing strange on it. But then, I saw something verry, verry weird: One of the Gargoyles is 100% identical with one of the Avalon clan (Its the gargoyle with the brestplate. In "C.o.s." he is arguing with Demona, and in "Avalon, pt.2" he sits in the castle). That he lives on Avalon must mean, that his father is from the Wyvern clan and, so we all thought, is dead. But in "C.o.S." we could see his father alive. So he must be a survivor of the Wyvern massakre...
Well, maybe you could bring some light in that.
CU, John
No. You're forgetting that a few years before the massacre, Wyvern's Gargoyle population was larger than the location could sustain (or than the humans of the castle would tolerate). Many of those gargoyles left Wyvern to form a new clan, that ultimately didn't fair much better than Wyvern did.
When you said that the gargoyles on New Olympus were never converted to NO religions and the fact that we never saw any gargoyles (except Goliath, Bronx and Angela) in the episode 'The New Olympians', and that you also said that the gargoyles on New Olympus wouldn't reveal themselves to the world immediately after the New Olympians do, does that mean that the gargoyles on New Olympus live away from the bulk of the New Olympian population?
They are somewhat isolationist, yes. But I hesitate to make generalizations about any group.
Do any of the gargoyles of New Olympus practice any of the New Olympian religions?
No.
After the events in "Hunter's Moon", the Manhattan gang are the first gargoyle clan to be revealed to the general public.
1a) Which clan will be revealed next? b) Will it willingly reveal itself, or will it be discovered?
2a) When the New Olympians reveal themselves to the human world, will they also reveal that there are gargoyles living among them? b) Will the majority of the New Olympian gargoyles be open to starting relations with humans themselves?
1a. Don't know.
1b. Don't know.
2a. Not right away.
2b. No.
1. When I asked if there are any Gargoylebeasts whith wings you said they involved without. So if it is all an evolving thing and if there are only two kinds of gargoyles (the human like and the beast like), how does it come, that some gargoyles look totally different to the others and seem to have other bones, a much different skelleton?
For example Lexington looks much different (for example his bones in his wings) and a much more distinct example is Zaphiro. He seems to have no legs at all.
1b) How should I imagine Zaphiros skelleton? Is his "foot" exactly like a part of a snake or have the two legbones grown together into one?
2. Are there any other gargoyles out there that look much different than the rest? (as much as Zaphiro does)
3. How about feathers? Have some gargoyles feathers at their wings? Is that normal? Or is it maybe a genetic characteristic you find just in the genetic resources of the gargoylepopulation of some specific lands and not all over the world?
4. Do all Ishimura-Gargoyles have black hair? Is it normal, that in all countrys where the hair color of the native population is black, the hair color of the gargoyles is black, too?
4b) How about the Guatemala-Gargoyles?
1. I think I said "evolved". You've never seen Zafiro's skeleton. The differences are superficial. The limb count is the same. Even Beasts, may have small vestigal wing bones, I suppose. But that doesn't mean there are flying beasts.
2. Yes.
3. Some have feather-like things on their wings, for example Zafiro and Griff.
4. Not all.
4b. What about them?
Once again I took a look at the old clan contest, but some things make me think.
1. If I understood it, the 10 currently existing clans are the following: Manhattan, Labyrinth, London, Ishimura, Guatemala, Avalon, Xanadu, Loch Ness and New Olympus - is that right?
2) So what´s the thing with London? Does it mean, that not only the little clan which met Goliath&Co at their journey lives in london, but that the bigger clan they came from (which we where not introduced yet) is also located in London? Does it mean all Gargoyles, that are living in England, are living in London?
3. What is the thing with the Labyrinth? I didn´t get it. Which labyrinth is meant? The one the Minotaurus was locked up? Or the hedge labyrinth? Or another?
- PS: Ooooh, now I´ve got an idea: Could it be, that you mean the Labyrinth in Manhattans Underground? (I never thought of it as a Gargoyleclan, cause there´s no real Gargoyle living in, but just human mutates.)
5. If the Loch Ness clan is currently existing, why didn´t they help the Nessies, when they where in danger?
6. England, Japan, Guatemala, China, Korea - in all these countrys are Gargoyles already living in the Dark Ages, aren´t they?
6) About how many clans where in each of this countrys?
7) In which countrys have in the Dark Ages also been clans, but totally stamped out or expeled during the following centuries?
8) When the englishmen hunted their gargoyles and drove them out of their land, how did it come, that one gargoyleclan survived and that they didn´t find them during all the centurys?
9) Did any of the english gargoyles flee into another land, when they where hunted? If so, what happened to them?
1. You forgot Korea.
2. As I've mentioned before, the clan lives in London's suburbs. The store which is manned by a small contingent from the clan, is in Soho.
3. Well, if you saw the series you should know (or perhaps recall) that the Mutates and the Gargoyle Clones lived in what they called "The Labyrinth" underneath Manhattan's streets with a bunch of homeless humans.
4. You didn't have a 4.
5. Who said they didn't? We just didn't see them.
6. (The First 6). Huh?
6. (The Second 6). One each.
7. Lots. And lots before the Dark Ages too. Assuming I understand the question.
8. They hid in plain sight for the most part.
9. Maybe.
Most of the gargoyles we've met look different depending on where they live. The Ishimura gargoyles have Japanese dress obviously, but also Zafiro and the London gargoyles have obvious differences. We have an idea from Griff's words in 'M.I.A.' that the Scottish gargoyles nowadays large resemble how they looked in 994. You also suggested in your 'bible' that the Chinese gargoyles might be dragon-like but what about in other places?
Do the gargoyles in New Olympus and Korea look any different? And what about the Paris gargoyles?
The Paris clan is a colony of the other 13 clans that precede it.
There are many physical differences between some of the clans. Fewer between others. At some point, we might try and do a migration pattern thing. But I haven't done it yet.
After "THE JOURNEY", how long would it be before people twigged that there were London gargoyles? Una and Leo must look pretty realistic and the enormous differences in appearance probably won't concern people looking for nocturnal guys with wings, claws and talons.
Maybe.
Gargoyle questions:
1. About what point in time did the London clan start using names?
2. About what point in time did the Ishimura clan start using names?
3. Do all the clans still in existance use names now?
1. Don't know yet.
2. Don't know yet, but they had them by the time Brooklyn LEFT.
3. No.
Some questions on the clans:
1) You said that the New Camelot area would still have normal day/night cycles and the temperature would be regulated so that the knights don't freeze. =) a) Is Merlin in any way responsible for these effects? b) Will New Camelot be self-sustainable? (i.e.--the area would be able to provide the knights with food, cloth and other necessary items?) c) Because of the day/night cycles, does time move differently there? d) How do the clan travel from Antarctica to the other continents? (by boat, plane, or some other way?)
2a) When you picked Korea as a clan location, was it simply to pay homage to the ones there who helped animate the show, or did you have some other reason, and can you say what that is? b) Which spin-offs might feature the Korea clan?
3a) Is there any particular reason why you didn't make any surviving clans live in Africa? b) Were there ever any clans in Africa? c) If so, did they migrate elsewhere, or were they completely wiped out?
1a. In any way? Yes, I guess.
1b. Not entirely.
1c. No.
1d. Depends.
2a. Both homage and another reason. I don't want to say now.
2b. Don't know yet. They were originally scheduled for the World Tour, but we just didn't have enough episodes to get to them.
3a. No.
3b. I'm sure at one point.
3c. Some of each.
I just found this question in the archives:
I've noticed that a lot of people are putting Antarctica down for the clan contest. But since Antarctica basically has one long day and one long night, what kind of effect would that have on the gargoyles stone sleep cycle?
Greg responds...
I can't answer this question while the contest is on-going. Ask me when or if the contest ever ends.
I'll go ahead and take you up on that one.
1. How does the long day/night cycle affect the New Camelot clan?
2. Or is the day/night cycle one of the things about the continent that changes between 1994 and 2158?
3. Is the unusual length of days and nights one of the reasons why Antarctica was chosen as the location of New Camelot?
1. It doesn't, because of the nature of New Camelot.
2. The cycle doesn't change Continent-wide, but New Camelot is an exception.
3. No.
Since Paris is one the 14 clans that will exist in the far future gargoyle series that was originally Gargoyles 2158 but now being revised I was wondering was there a Gargoyle clan living in Paris at the time of Goliath's awakening or will a Paris clan only exist if Gargoyles from other clans come to Paris to create a new one later on?
The Paris clan does not yet exist in the revised 2158. It's even farther down the road. There were no Gargoyles living in Paris in 1994.
Guatemalan gargoyle questions:
1. Do the pendants worn by the clan also rejuvenate them, as they don't turn to stone while wearing the pendants?
2. Do gargoyles wearing the pendants age at half-speed like normal gargoyles, of at a human rate since they don't become stone?
3. Were Zafiro, Jade, Turquesa, and Obsidiana the only members of their clan who normally used the pendants, or were they just the gargoyles wearing them when the rest of the clan was destroyed?
1. No.
2. Human rate. There's a cost.
3. They had the honor of being the pendant wearers at the time.
Some Guatemala questions:
1a) If a clan has survived there all this time, why didn't the Mayans that shared the temple with them also survive? b) Were the Mayans killed/kidnapped/dispersed as recently as the raid that took out most of the clan, or did it happen long ago?
2) I was wondering if Jade's headdress bore any kind of significance? Does he have a status that differs from the others in the clan?
3a) Can any in the clan perform magic? b) Would anyone in the Gargoyles Universe (still living) have the knoweldge and the power to make another sun amulet and set of magic pendants?
4a) You mentioned that Jade and Turquesa would go on a few skiff adventures before returning home. In which spin-off would you imagine these adventures might be seen in? 4b) If you're willing, please mention one location where they will travel to.
5) Will they be allowed to bring their pendants with them when they enter Avalon? If not, what will they do with them?
1a. Long story.
1b. Long ago.
2. I'm sure it has some significance.
3a. Obsidiana has limited abilities with potions and as a healer.
b. Possbily.
4a. Just in GARGOYLES.
4b. Just one? Back to Guatemala, of course. ;)
5. Leave 'em on the raft, I guess.
Well, we now know that the Xanadu clan is one of the currently-existing clans, alongside the gargoyles in Korea and New Olympus. And based on the evidence in "Heritage", I'd assume that the Queen Florence Island clan is one of the clans that won't be introduced until after 2158 (or whatever the new year for "Gargoyles 2158" will be).
So which of the two remaining clans is the tenth present-day one? Loch Ness or Paris? (I'm thinking Loch Ness myself, since it's easier to imagine a gargoyle clan successfully hiding in Loch Ness than in Paris, and because you indicated in your answer about Taro's theme park that there aren't any gargoyles in Paris currently, but I'd just like to make certain).
Paris is clan 14, which is as far into the future as my thoughts have gone. (Way beyond the start of the revised future-set show.)
You just revealed that the Xanadu clan is the other contemporary clan. You also previously mentioned that Brooklyn would find Fu-Dog in China during his travels. Which makes me wonder.....
1a) Does the Gate bring Brooklyn to present-day (or at least what would be the present relative to the "Gargoyles" show time-line) China? b) If not the present, around which period would it be (ancient, medieval, future, etc), on each (if there's more than one) of the occassions Brook would travel to China?
2a) Is Xanadu the only Chinese location the Gate brings Brook to? (assuming it even takes him to Xanadu). 2b) Does Brooklyn find Fu-dog in Xanadu, or in another Chinese clan?
3a) Around what age would Fu-dog be when Brook first finds him? (I think you said he wasn't a puppy) b) Did Fu-dog leave a mate or any progeny behind when he left with Brooklyn?
4) Do the Ishimura, Korea, and Xanadu clans know about each other?
5) In the contest, you didn't give credit for listing Beijing as the home of the Xanadu clan, even though that's where Kublai Khan had his capital--which is the place some believe Coleridge's "Xanadu" referred to. So my question is--where (approximately) in China *is* Xanadu?
6) Dragons play a big role in Chinese (and many other) mythologies. Are these legends simply based on gargoyles and their beasts--who may resemble dragons, on fey who chose to assume dragon form, or on a separate species all-together?
1a. Maybe.
1b. Maybe all of the above. Or not.
2a. Forty years is a long dance. I don't pretend to have all forty years plotted out exactly.
2b. Xanadu.
3a. I said I never said he was a puppy.
3b. Can't say. Or won't.
4. Perhaps.
5. Not in Beijing.
6. Greg has left the building.
(Questions on Yama and Sora)
1) In "Bad Guys" you had planned on Yama being part of the crew. But I doubt that will occure exactly that way if the regular "Gargoyles" series ever comes back. So..
Did you plan on having Yama try to redeem himself in some other way?
2) You mentioned that Sora was going to be one of the females included in the Manhattan Rookery. Why did she go all the way there to lay her egg? Was it do to some clause in Bushido? (I personally don't think that gargs have a hang up on dishonor being passed down ..but thought I'd ask)
1. No. If any garg-related series ever came back, I'd find a way to incorporate Bad Guys into it.
2. I categorically did not say that. I said they'd all be laying eggs around the same time. Not the same place.
Hello,
I was just curious, biologically, how old was everyone in the mini clan back in 1996? Thanks alot!
What's the mini-clan? Isn't that a fan-based thing?
Yay, the clan contest is over!
Okay, I've wanted to ask you this ever since I realized that Rome wasn't a clan location: You had said that it was the Magus of Rome who cast the "clothes turning to stone" spell because the emperor was sick of naked gargoyles running around. So... what happened to the Roman clan? Did they die out?
Thanks!
I never said there was a clan in Rome.
A fresh question about the now-solved clan contest:
When you first began this one in 1997 (I believe), you mentioned that the 14 clans consisted of the six that we already knew, two currently-existing ones that were hinted at in the series, two more currently-existing ones that were not hinted at anywhere in the series, two future clans that would be brought about through the long-term goals of cast members, and two future clans (established post-2158 originally, although it's obviously going to be a different year now) that were foreshadowed in the series.
Now, the eight clans on the confirmed list besides the six on-stage ones are: New Olympus, Korea, Xanadu, Paris, Loch Ness, New Camelot, Wyvern, and Queen Florence Island.
New Olympus we know is one of the two present-day hinted-at ones (since the New Olympians mention knowing gargoyles). Korea, obviously, is one of the two present-day not-hinted-at "you-can-only-guess-it-if-you're-psychic" ones, since Korea was never mentioned in the series. So that brings the number down to six.
Now, obviously the New Camelot and Wyvern clans don't exist yet, and they both fit the description for the earlier "pre-2158" future clans: New Camelot would be a fulfillment of King Arthur's long-term goals, and Wyvern would fit in with the "nostalgia" element that you mentioned one of these clans having. So that leaves us with four: Loch Ness, Paris, Queen Florence Island, and Xanadu.
Here's where the question creeps in: which one of these four is the remaining contemporary unhinted-at-one? Now, it's obviously not Loch Ness (since Sevarius speculates about a clan there in "Monsters" and even initially believes Angela to be part of it before he examines her genetic structure and discovers that she's Goliath and Demona's daughter) or Queen Florence Island (partly because we know that there aren't any gargoyles now, and partly because Raven's illusionary clan would obviously count as a foreshadowing). So that narrows it down to Paris and Xanadu.
But both, one can argue, are also "foreshadowed" - Paris via "Sanctuary" and the opening flashback of "Hunter's Moon Part Three" (where Demona kills Charles Canmore at Notre Dame), and Xanadu in "Her Brother's Keeper" where Xanatos has an upstate retreat with the same name. So which one of these is the "unforeshadowed" one?
Xanadu. Unfortunately, when I posted those original clues, I temporarily forgot that Xanadu was the name of Xanatos' retreat. Sorry if that prolonged the contest (for three years).
Now that the clan contest is over (and congratulations, Vashkoda!), I thought that I'd ask you about one of the particular clan-answers.
It seems clear now that you're placing New Camelot in Antarctica. What I'm curious about is: why there? While Antarctica does have some advantages for being the site of Arthur's new home (it's out of the way, and isn't part of any nation-state), it's also one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. Wouldn't the harsh cold be something of a problem for making it Arthur's permanent base of operations (well, the gargoyles there would be able to weather the cold, but it might not be so great for any human members of the court)?
Keep in mind, the clan and the kingdom is founded in Antarctica sometime between 1996 and (the revised year that was) 2158. I'm not gonna get more specific than that right now, but I will say that a lot can happen in two hundred years. Also, the location is a direct result of various strange alliances in the Garg Universe that I'm also not prepared to discuss right now.
Let me just say that I'm not ignorant of the weather conditions. But I do have something in mind.
Ok.
I just want to know the manhatten clan gargoyles ages. Sorry if im rude, stupid or anything, i just wanna know their ages.
I don't think you're being rude, stupid or "anything". What generated that?
Anyway, unfortuntately, I don't have that information with me right now. And I'm tired of trusting my memory and getting things wrong. So post the question again, and if I'm at my office, I promise I'll answer it.
Were the ancestors of the London clan the gargoyles whom Arthur was acquainted with during his reign? I assume that they were in Britain already at the time because of Griff's "hatchling riddle" about Excalibur in "Pendragon" (the episode) - not to mention the fact that their presence in Arthur's kingdom would explain those references in the legends to lions, unicorns, and griffons in Arthurian Britain - but I just wanted to make certain.
Yep.

1. What were the names of the four members of the Guatamalan clan before they were given the pendants? (It's odd that I'd ask you a question that I don't really expect you to have an answer to. Consider it definitive prove that the universe is a silly place.)
2. Will they revert to their old names when they "retire"?
(2b. Am I correct in assuming that, unless they die, they'll eventually pass their pendants on to younger gargoyles?)
1. They had no names. They're Gargoyles. ;)
2. See above.
I dunno if I caught something in Fred's score or not. Prob' not, but oh well:

Both, please.
this comes from my previous question you asked me a question when i asked you the manhatten gargoyles ages.
Both what?
You gotta understand that it's probably been weeks since I saw your last question. Is cutting and pasting that big a problem?
Are any humans besides Elisa aware that there is a clan of gargoyles in London?
Probably. But not many.
