Hi, Greg. I have two hopefully-non-spoiler questions for you regarding Zatanna:

(1) Is she a vegetarian on Earth-16?
(2) Is she or has she considered becoming a Dianic Wiccan on Earth-16?

I'm mainly curious because these were two relatively small, but still meaningful aspects of her character in the comics that I thought would be interesting if they carried over into a story of her teenage years.

Greg responds...

As of the end of Season One:

1. It seems not, since she helped prepare the turkey. But maybe she didn't partake?

2. No.

I will try to keep this from becoming a spoiler-asking question, hopefully! Though due in part to the… specificity, I don’t know how successful this will be.

You mentioned before that there was undoubtedly going to be (at least one) lgbt character on the show. I won’t ask who, as spoilers, but I guess thatâ€"the ending of the first season really threw me, in a sad way. A sudden parade of heteronormativity at the end of a show season where I had a lot of hope that there might be an lgbt relationship acknowledged by the writing hit pretty hard!

I know that one person does not control all the creative decisions of a tv production by themself, but I guess I wondered if a canonically acknowledged lgbt character was still a thing that WILL happen. Because it is well and good to say “undoubtedly they exist,” but ultimately never acknowledging that within the show does lgbt kids no good! Because saying something like, “obviously chances are someone on the team is lgbt,” is actually really meaningless to us lgbt people if that part of their identity is never shown or confirmed. It just continues to make us invisible in the mainstream media (particularly kid’s media) while still playing up having some diversity, and that does hurt.

Greg responds...

Okay, I'm pretty sure I NEVER said we were going to acknowledge an lgbt relationship on the show. I'm quite certain that we would not be allowed to on television. NOT ALLOWED. I don't know where you got any other idea. I've been pretty consistent about how I FEEL about this. I think it's cowardly. But I've also admitted that I'm complicit in that cowardice, as I know that if I insisted on bravery - and remained adamant - I would at best be overruled and at worst FIRED. And I need my job. I'm not proud of this, and I'm not happy about it. But that's the current situation. I imagine it does hurt, and I wish I could ameliorate that pain. But at this point in time, I cannot. I'm sorry.

Instead, what I've tried to do is write the characters consistently in the hope that someday things change and that some subtleties put in place now will help in their own small way to inch us forward. I also hope to have more freedom in the YJ companion comic, as comics have a history of being more progressive in this area. But we'll have to see. I'm afraid that for now, that's the best I can do.

Hi Greg, My brothers and I love young justice, its probably one of our favorite shows right now, so thank you very much for making it.
We were wondering, why does Robin have a black and red costume like Tim Drake, and not his usual Red and Green costume? I saw a preview poster from a while back and his sleeves and pants were green, i don't know if that was just fan made, but I would really like to know. Thank You so much for your time. :)

Greg responds...

These were decisions made mostly by Brandon Vietti and Phil Bourassa. You'd have to ask them.

Hey Greg. I have a few questions about Young Justice which is an amazing show.
1.Is Superboy affected less by Kryptonite because of his human DNA?since Superman passed out in Auld aquiantance when Robin brought out Kryptonite but Superboy didn't.
2. Does Miss Martian have any extra white Martian abilities that Green Martians don't have?
3. Is it true that Martians age slower than humans because of Mars' distance from the sun?If this is true, are Miss Martian or Martian Manhunter affected in any way when on earth?
4. Since Sportsmaster was defeated by Artemis in Usual suspects, will he be sent to Belle Reve?

Greg responds...

1. Both were equally effected, but before Robin put the kryptonite away, he put a Cure-Tech chip on Superman's neck. That's what caused Superman to pass out.

2. There are no differences in abilities between Green and White Martians.

3. No.

4. It's somewhat moot by the beginning of Season Two, five years later.

2) Why did you pick Lagoon Boy over Garth as a Team member/ally?

2. Our feeling was that organically, Garth would have joined and left the Team, all within the five year gap.

* Are they Arabian or North African countries?
* I've seen Dhabar in a comic once, but not Al-Qawiya. Was it always Bialya's capital, or did you make it up? What does it mean?

1. No.

2. Both.

Great job on the season finale! There's some imagery there that'll give me nightmares for a while yet... I have a question about Roy and the wonderful Mr. Crispin Freeman, who was a really great choice to play a really great role.

1. Was Crispin Freeman told about Roy's role in the plot? Did he know from the first episode that Roy was both the mole and a clone, or was that reveal kept from him until the relevant episodes were recorded?

Greg responds...

1. Honestly, I don't remember. It'd be a good question to ask Crispin. (Is there an ASK CRISPIN somewhere? Cuz if not, there should be.)

Hey Greg, loving Young Justice so far, so keep up the good work! I just had a few questions in mind that I hope aren't simply in the annoying "no comment" territory as they mostly pertain to the choices you and others involved have made as opposed to just spoilers.

1. Was there ever discussion to use Tim Drake or Jason Todd instead of Dick Grayson for Robin? Personally, Grayson is my favorite, but I'm a huge fan of how you've incorporated some Drake-traits into him. This is probably my favorite incarnation of the character in any medium that I've seen!

2. I LOVE the inclusion of the ranking system for the teams. Who decided on which people should be ranked above others (outside of the obvious Superman-1, Batman-2, etc)? Was that a subject that caused a lot of debate amongst the writers?

3. I'm curious...I can see why Vandal Savage, Ra's al Ghul, and Lex Luthor are in The Light, but why the others? Queen Bee seems to be getting quite a bit of screen time for someone a little out of the mainstream. Was the choice of using people like her, Brain, Sportsmaster, and others that are frequently showcased just a matter of the writers/producers really liking those characters or is there a plan set in motion?

4. What was the design process of Riddler like? His look is quite different in some ways than what I was expecting.

Thanks in advance. I'm really looking forward to Invasion and what comes after that as well!

Greg responds...

1. ASKED AND ANSWERED. (And what hasn't been answered is a SPOILER.)

2. It's not a ranking system. Designations are based on the order of entry into either the League or the Team, etc. So, no, no debate. Cause it's objective not subjective.

3. Both, probably.

4. Same as with all our characters. Brandon, Phil and I talk. Phil comes up with something brilliant. We either love it instantly or ask for a few minor tweaks, and then it goes to final.

Artemis grandparents were they good people or were they similar to her parents? 5. Back when the team was in Biyala the Light mentioned they had a new partner does this mean their new partner was joining the group of seven or did it mean they have a new business associate

Greg responds...

As of the end of Season One...

1. Probably Robin, I guess, if you're being a purist. But if you take weapons and powers into account, I'd say Aqualad. And Artemis is no slouch either. But they're all learning... thanks to Black Canary.

2. Whom did you have in mind? (You know, that isn't a backdoor spoiler request.)

In the early days of "Ask Greg", you did a little mini-ramble about how the key to a great villain is to give him or her traits that echo the traits of the hero. You illustrated it with Batman's rogues gallery, in the course of which you mentioned that while you were able to fit Riddler into it (since he's setting riddles and puzzles against Batman, who's a detective), he never grabbed you as much as the other villains.

I haven't seen any of the episodes of "Young Justice" past "Downtime" yet, but I've read about them and learned that Riddler appears in them as one of the Light's agents (and was even introduced in an episode where he's in a prison for super-villains, all the other super-villains make fun of him, but when there's an attempted break-out, Riddler is the only one who escapes). Have your thoughts on Riddler changed since you wrote that mini-ramble (it was in the late 90's, I recall, so there'd have been much time for that)? Of course, it might not be relevant to his role in "Young Justice", since its leads are the team rather than Batman (even though he's one of its supervisors, and Robin is one of its members), so the antagonists in "Young Justice" would be chosen more for how they reflect the traits, strengths, and weaknesses of the team than those of Batman.

Greg responds...

Exactly. And in fact, since the real opponent to the Team is the Light, Riddler's role has more to do with how he fits into the larger organization - as opposed to how he personally resonates with our Team members.

YJ UPDATE

YJ UPDATE

SEASON ONE of YOUNG JUSTICE has all aired multiple times by now.

SEASON TWO/YOUNG JUSTICE INVASION
*Episodes 201-207 have already aired. 207 airs again this weekend, and then new episodes begin airing on Saturday morning September 29th as part of Cartoon Network's DC Nation block.
*Episodes 208-218 are all in the can. Finished. Done. Ready to air.
*Episode 219 is back here in Burbank, and we'll be calling retakes and locking picture this week.
*Episode 220 is due in from Moi late this week. That's right; we're really in the homestretch on Season Two now.

YOUNG JUSTICE COMPANION COMIC BOOK
*Issues #0-19 have all hit the stands and are available at comic shops or online.
*Issue #20 hits the stands this week. It's the start of a six-part story that is BIG. REALLY BIG. It updates the book, bringing in our Season Two cast, and is set one month prior to the start of Season Two with flashbacks to a couple untold - or only hinted at - tales from the Season One era, plus, by the end of the six-parter, a little story from immediately after Season One. Christopher Jones is just doing some stellar work on the book. And I'm pretty proud of the story and script, if I do say so myself.
*Issue #21 is being colored by Zac Atkinson as we speak.
*Issue #22 is being pencilled by Chris.
*Issues #23 & #24 are both fully scripted and waiting.
*Issue #25 is plotted. I'll be starting on the script tonight.
As always, you don't have to read the comic to enjoy the t.v. series or vice versa. But you get more out of BOTH if you watch/read both.

THE VIDEO GAME
Young Justice Legacy seems to be proceeding apace. I've done a bit of polishing on some of the dialogue to make sure it's consistent with the show.

ASK GREG
Will open again for reader postings on September 29th. Please follow all guidelines - and please, please, please DON'T FLOOD the queue. But please do post your responses to the comics that came out this summer when posting was not possible.

I think that about covers it.

Mr. Greg Weisman,

I must please ask out of utmost respect that this posting must not be deleted under any circumstances! After watching the season premiere of Young Justice: Invasion, I may have figured something out, and I wish for you to read this!

Five years have passed since the aftermath of the events of “Auld Acquaintance,” and it is clear that things have changed a great deal. When I realized there was a time-skip in this episode, my intial thought was that you might have made this move out of inspiration from the DC relaunch (ie. an origin story, like the Justice League in the relaunched comics, taking place five years prior). You must understand that it seemed reasonable for a time, because I believed for a moment that everything that happened in Season One seemed more like an origin story since there is a time-skip this season. However, while watching “Happy New Year,” and thinking about the time-skip some more, I have come to a possible conclusion and wish to ask you this: Is it possible the reason for the time-skip has something to do with the upcoming Young Justice: Legacy video game (coming in 2013, as I’ve read on the internet)? I might have asked questions about the game before in a prior posting, but now the time-skip seems to make sense and everything seems to connect. No other person prior to me might have asked you about it, but I believe that whatever happened within the unexplained five years might have something to do with whatever events will occur in the upcoming game, hence the game’s presented tagline, “One will Rise. One Will Fall. One will Die.” Is my deduction correct?

Thanks for taking the time to read this particular posting. It means a lot.

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"We planned on this time jump from day one. Because we knew, again, that if our show's about growing up, then you can't show a character grow up in 6 months' time. So the idea is that our first season told 6 months from July 4th to January 1st. Our second season tells another 6 months from January 1st to July 4th, but there's a 5-year gap in-between that we planned.

Then when Warner Bros. and Little Orbit came to us and said, 'Do you want to do a game?' we're like, 'Great, because we've got this 5 year gap!' And we sat down and we talked about it, and we found this really significant event. I mean, obviously one game doesn't cover all 5 years. We found one really importnt event that took place during the 5 year gap, and that's the story that this game tells. So it's canon material, it's in-continuity with the series, "

Hey Greg,

Huge fan of Gargoyles back in the day and love the new series.

Question regarding the time skip between seasons 1 and 2 of Young Justice: Was it something planned since the show's conception, that YJ would be a story through the generations of this world of heroes? Or was it just a handy way to clear the boards for a fresh team?

Or to put it another way: Did you do a new team so you could have a time skip? Or do a time skip so you could have a new team? or a bit of both?

An Ask Greg Helper responds...

Greg Weisman says:

"While developing Season One, we had a solid idea of what we had in mind for Season Two - including the time skip. And we had/have solid ideas for Season Three, including another time skip."

*Issues 0-16 are all on the stands, available at comic book stores or online.
*Issue 17 is done. I've already received my comp copies, and if you want a sneak peak this weekend, stop by my signing at Denver Comic Con. (More on this below.)
*Issue 18 is being inked.
*Issue 19 is being pencilled.
*THEN, starting with Issue 20, the book changes titles to YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION.
*Issues 20-25 are a big story: a six issue mini-series within the series. About 95% of the content is split between December 1st of Season One and five years later on December 1st, JUST before the start of Season Two.
*Issue 20 is scripted and ready for pencilling.
*Issue 21 is being scripted now.
*Issue 22-25 are all loosely plotted.

[All this has required some adjustments. The original plan was to finish all the stories set DURING Season One before rebranding the book. But TPTB at DC understandably decided that since the television show has already been rebranded, we shouldn't wait that long to rebrand the comic. And given that, I wanted to launch the rebranding with a BIG story that featured all - or nearly all - of the Team. So the Green Arrow, Black Canary, Artemis, Red Arrow story (set after episode 114), I originally had planned as a two-parter for issues 20-21 will have to wait. Given enough issues (keep buying those books people!), we'll get to everything eventually - including that Arrow-Family story. The new structure will use our timestamps to allow us to bounce back and forth (even within a single issue) from Season One to Season Two to the gap between seasons and BEYOND...]"

In the sense that Paul Robeson was politically dangerous to bigots in the fifties, sure. But it's nothing new or unusual. There are no real biological between White, Green and Red Martians beyond the relatively superficial trait of skin color.

I tried reading the bazillian questions alrardy asked & answeted, but I cannot find my first question anywhere (if it has been, I appologize, just skip to the second) and I do realize I will most likely get a spoiler message...but here goes:

1. Are the Hawks Carter & Shiara (sp?) or Katar & Shayla (heres hiping hoping for Katar)?

2. In previous answers you stated many times that keeping with early DC tradition was the main reason for using Dick & Wally - even once saying "it wouldnt make sense not to use Dick...my question is, where is that logic when it comes to Aqualad or Wondergirl? Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the new Aqualad (really wished Donna was going to br on the team, though), but it seems like this flies in the face of your own logic.

Greg responds...

1. If you're asking about their Thanagarian names, they're Katar & Shayera.

2. It doesn't. Look at the origins of ALL the other Robins. They depend on Dick already existing. Look at Nightwing's origin. It depends on him having been Robin first. In contrast, look at Aqualad's origin. It doesn't depend on Garth having already been Aqualad. It only depends on him taking heroic action, and Aquaman wanting a protege. Look at Cassie . The fundamental thing about her origin is her parentage, not her predecessor. Sure, Donna influenced Cassie's early appearances in the old comics, but her origin doesn't depend on Donna. In any case, I'm neither confirming or denying Donna's status on Earth-16.

Hi Greg,

I've never done this kind of thing before but I'm actually extremely curious about a topic regarding to the series Young Justice. Sorry if this may seem confusing, but I'll try and get it out as simply as I can make it:

In the episode "Misplaced" when all of the kids and adults are separated into two different dimensions, Robin states that he can't even contact Red Arrow, letting the audience know that Red Arrow is either eighteen years old or possibly older. I also read a question that you had answered where you clarified this as being true.

However, after the episode Auld Acquaintance, it's revealed that Red Arrow is indeed a clone and has only been around for three years. So if I'm getting this right, the original Roy Harper is eighteen and thus is why the clone looks to be that age. But because the Red Arrow clone is really only three years of age, how come he's not in the same dimension as the kids? I don't know, maybe Klarion's magic took in the factor that physiologically, he is 18 years old.

Sorry for my ranting, but I'm just curious. Thanks!

The first season of "Young Justice" takes place over the course of half a year, starting on the Fourth of July and continuing to New Year's Eve in the Season One finale (with episodes set on Halloween and Thanksgiving along the way). I remember that the first season of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" similarly stretched from the start of the school year in September to Thanksgiving (with a Halloween episode along the way), and that the second season got up at least to Valentine's Day. The time progression in "Gargoyles" was more vague, but we had two Halloween stories ("Eye of the Beholder" and the Double Date story) and three wintry episodes in New York ("Her Brother's Keeper", which ends with a snowfall, "Re-Awakening", and "The Price"), as well as a clear timeline for the Stone of Destiny story.

I like this sense of the year's progress through the seasons and landmark days (like the Fourth of July and Halloween), but it doesn't seem that common in animated series outside your own work. I've seen two speculations on why that element is so rare in animated series. One is that a lot of the people who engage in such creative work aren't big on continuity and change, far less than you are. Another is that most people involved in creating animated television series live in or near Los Angeles and other parts of California, where the climate is pretty much the same year around and there's less a sense of four seasons than in other parts of the United States. I was wondering what your thoughts were on these theories.

Greg responds...

Both these theories seem valid to me, but they probably pale from the economic explanation: if you progress through the seasons then you have to redress backgrounds and characters, and that's expensive. Me, I believe it's WORTH the expense. But that's only true if you're really going to DO something with it. If you're not, then there's not much point. (We also did it on W.I.T.C.H. by the way.)

Anyways, I was wondering about the Light. How exactly did you come up with this evil cabal of villains? I'm not asking for spoilers, just what made you decide to take these select villains, and organize them into such a secretive, manipulative, and mysterious way of organized crime. The Secret Society and the Injustice League in the comics they weren't anywhere near as badass and secret as this group is! Did the Illuminati from Gargoyles influence their creation a bit?

Thanks for your time, if you decide to answer this! Keep up the excellent work, can't wait for Season 2 of Young Justice!

Greg responds...

The Illuminati may have been an influence, but mostly it was Brandon and I (and later Kevin) sitting down and figuring out what kind of opposition we wanted for our series and what their motivations would be and what their goals would be and finally, who would be chosen to carry those banners. As always, we looked for diversity, personality, power ranges - but mostly CHOPS.

1. How much would say past cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited influenced your work on, Young Justice?

2. Were the six Leaguers in "Auld Acquaintance" who were unaccounted for(Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkwoman and John Stewart) a reference to the Justice League cartoon, since the show featured an near identical line-up, or was it just a coincidence?

Greg responds...

1. Batman's been a big influence since back in the Gargoyles days. Nothing specific, but it's probably still floating around in my brain. I'm less familiar with JLU, so I'm sure it's had less of an influence. I know early on we did some things intentionally differently to distance ourselves from that great show. But for example, the six Leaguers chosen to be missing for 16 hours was definitely influenced by the cast of the original Justice League series.

2. Yes. By now you probably realize that Flash was NOT included because we needed him back on Earth for our Impulse intro.

Dear Greg,
Watched the season finale, and WOW. What an ending. Here I've been telling my friends the mole was a Starro-controlled Red Arrow. Boy was I half-wrong. And the fate of Original Roy-OK, that was cool. It's a way to get the cybernetic arm in without the needless killing of a baby, very nice. And the team taking on the league, very cool. I'm glad Clark made peace with Connor, very cool. Honestly, my favorite part of the whole episode? Tying up the romantic plots. Thank you, especially for Zatana grabbing Dick like that, very funny. And if the clips they showed for season 2(hopefully starting next week) are correct; Oh, you just went up beyond my top 5 favorite creators. Thank you for an amazing first season of Young Justice, please pass this on to the rest of the cast & crew, and I eagerly await more of the Team!

Mr. Curious writes...

In Young Justice, three separate designation systems were established (that we know of thus far): one for members of the Justice League, one for members of The Team, and one for authorized guests. Here’s where I need to ask two tricky questions about the topic.

a. From her introduction into the show until the concluding events of “Misplaced,” Zatanna was registered as designation A03. Afterwards, she would become an official member of The Team, but we do not know if her designation changed from A03 to B08 for the rest of Season One. If it turns out that it was changed, was Zatanna’s former designation of A03 just left open for someone else to fill? It would definitely explain why Vandal Savage’s designation was A04 and not A03.

b. The designation B06 was reserved for “Speedy/Red Arrow” (the clone) in the event he would join The Team officially. He stuck around for at least two missions with The Team and then he became a member of the Justice League as designation 21. Since “Red Arrow” was given a new designation, what happened to his former designation as B06? Should I assume that everyone from Artemis onwards moved a designation up (for example, Artemis now can become B06 instead of B07)?

Greg responds...

a. Designations are not recycled. Except for Vandal's since he was never meant to be "authorized" by the League.

b. No. Designations are not recycled.

Usually when a game comes out on multiple platforms there are differences between each one, both major and minor, due to differences between the system. During "Performance" Dick's eyes are clearly visible, yet despite not seeing them before, the team didn't react. I'm curious why this was and if nothing will be mentioned about his eyes or secret identity again. I mean, Dick Grayson is kind of well known, and I feel they should be able to recognize him from the media, thus giving up his secret identity. I know the Young Justice universe is different than the others, but I find it odd that Robin would show his eyes because despite being more trusting than Batman, he still seems to be very cautious. Anyways, I was just wondering if Robin's eyes or identity will be covered. Love the show a whole lot and thanks for taking time to answer question!

Greg responds...

How is Dick Grayson "well known"? Because as a kid he was a circus performer? Because his parents were murdered? Because he was adopted by Bruce Wayne? Any media that might have been generated by any of this was FOUR YEARS AGO. Think about how much physcial change any boy goes through between the ages of 9 and 13. And do you really think any media focused close enough on his eyes that Roy or Artemis would have studied them so closely that four years later they'd recall those eyes when they see them out of context? (And of course, Superboy wasn't born four years ago, and M'gann wasn't on Earth.)

And in any case, Dick WAS WEARING A MASK the whole time. If glasses work for Clark Kent, then a mask can certainly work for Dick Grayson even if his irises and pupils are visible.

Hi, Greg. Sorry. But this is a criticism. As a huge Captain Marvel fan, I was a little miffed by how Zatanna took out Captain Marvel in the fight on board the watchtower. Captain Marvel has in recent years been depicted as being invulnerable to all but the highest level magic. Furthermore, Billy's powers come from a lord of order - Shazam! Would a spell of that magnitude really be affected by Zatanna's "baby magic?" It is (maybe) a minor detail, but I think you were being inconsistent in regards to Zatanna's power level here. Now, if it had been Klarion or Fate casting the spell...

I would like to thank-you though for a great if extremely protracted season. I do sometimes go out of my way to be polite because others on this forum can be so rude, but I'm not kissing your butt here. I think Young Justice is the best superhero show ever. And yes, I am ranking it above Batman: the Animated Series.

Greg responds...

Well, we'll just have to disagree. If Captain Marvel can be blindsided by a punch, he can be blindsided by a magic spell. And Zatanna's abilities may be "baby magic" to a LORD OF CHAOS, but Cap is no Lord of Chaos or Order - even if his powers do "come from a lord of order" (which by the way, I'm neither confirming or denying vis-a-vis Earth-16). Cap has a kryptonite-like vulnerability, which Zatanna exploited.

And for the record, statements like "X has in recent years been depicted" don't interest me much. I'm always trying to get to the core truth of any character in the show. But most of these characters are older than I am, and I can't be enslaved by every depiction that ever existed, whether recent or not.

Otherwise, thanks for the kind words.

-What exactly do Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor know about each other? Have they ever met?

-Depictions of Batman tend to fall between two extremes. On end of the spectrum is the Ubermensch Batman who can predict everything, is always right, take down the Justice League on his own, outmatch Darkseid, and can fight Superman solo and win. On the other end of the spectrum is the Chris Nolan kind of Batman who is just a regular guy of slightly above average intelligence who fights crime with resourcefulness and rigorous training, with backup guys like Lucius Fox doing most of the genius work. A happy medium between these two I would say is the Batman from the Justice League series and BTAS. Where would you say your Batman falls on this scale? Towards one end, the other, or in the middle?

Mr. Greg Weisman,

The Season One finale episode was the best episode ever next to "Usual Suspects." It's been a great first season, and I hope the second season does just as good. On to my questions for this particular episode.

1. Was the kryptonite that Robin used to stop Superman actually shaped like a bullet? I wasn’t sure since he moved it towards the screen rather quickly.

2. Batman was under the influence of Starro Tech when he said that Roy Harper was switched with his clone shortly after becoming Green Arrow’s protégé. Personally, I DON’T think Batman was telling the truth at that time (because heroes under the influence of mind-control never do tell the REAL truth). With that fact in mind, was the real Roy Harper on ANY of the past Season One episodes besides the brief appearance at Cadmus at the closing moments of the finale episode? It would be hard to believe that the clone has been around since 2007.

3. The six Starro Tech-controlled Justice League members who returned from their unknown mission appeared to be a nod to the two-part Justice League episode called “A Better World,” in which they were a group of anti-heroes called the Justice Lords in an alternate timeline. Am I correct with what I just said? Now that I think about it, were any other nods to other DC animated media during this entire season? If there was, then this must have been the only one that I’ve actually noticed.

4. Are Dr. Spence and all the Genomorphs at Cadmus dead… or were they just knocked out? Also, if Guardian WAS the cause of it (regardless of what their fate was), was it because he was also under the influence of Starro Tech as well?

5. Because Vandal Savage was registered as designation A04, I’m worried that if his designation is not removed, he can not only gain access to Watchtower, but to other locations such as The Hall of Justice and Mount Justice, and therefore all secret locations could be compromised. With the immediate crisis over, will Vandal Savage’s designation be removed from Justice League computer systems?

Thanks for taking the time to read my questions. Looking forward to the Invasion in the coming week!

Greg responds...

1. I don't remember the shape per se.

2. No. Batman (or rather Vandal using Batman as a mouthpiece) used the partial truth to create a more convincing lie.

3. Not particularly. It was more of just a general nod to the Justice League series as a whole.

3a. Probably. None that leap out at me.

4. Knocked out.

4a. By now you know Guardian was a clone too. So, no, it wasn't Starro-Tech. It was his Cadmus programming.

5. Of course.

My question is: why Artemis?

I would understand if you had chosen, say, Supergirl, but Artemis seems really obscure. With whom did the idea to use Artemis originate, and how did it develop?

(BTW, I'm not arguing with the end result. I love the character! You never know what she's going to say or do next. I hope DC will take the hint and introduce her in the comics. As far as I'm concerned, from now on Wally West will only be half a character without Artemis.)

Greg responds...

Having a female archer was initially Brandon's idea, but I readily agreed - as long as I could keep Roy in there too. Choosing which female archer was a process. DC has something like four blonde female teenage archers. We looked at all of them. And Artemis' backstory seemed the most interesting, with the most secrets and lies.

Whether a character was obscure or not didn't enter into it. (And why would we use Supergirl as one of our original six heroes, when we already had Superboy?)

Anyway, I'm glad you like her.

Auld Acquaintance

It's hard to believe that we're finally here. "Young Justice" premiered with "Independence Day" on Black Friday, 2010. Finally, on April 21st, 2012, the show's premiere season comes to a close. Twenty-six episodes spread across three separate years. I don't know if this has ever happened before, but it's certainly the longest time I've ever spent watching one season of a television show. But right now, I can think of no better testimony for this series than to point that despite the constant delays in the airing of the series, and even losing some momentum because of it, the show never ceased to be engaging. Sure, in a perfect world, the season would have aired in less than one year, but we do not live in a perfect world. Neither does The Team.

I loved that cold opening. In fact, it almost feels that on any other DC show, Batman would have been so on top of things that they would have stopped Red Arrow, and subdued Vandal Savage. On any other DC show, Batman would have already known that Red Arrow had been compromised as a traitor. Hell, I've seen people demanding to know how Batman missed this after "Usual Suspects" aired last week. Well, Batman might be the world's greatest detective, but he is not omniscient.

The build-up to this episode started as far back as "Independence Day," everything mattered. Every action taken by every character since the pilot has built up to this. Every action had implications and consequences. It was all a slow burn to a boiling pot. Unlike the overrated "Justice League Unlimited" where you were lucky if anything had even short term consequences, and character development was non-existent unless you were named John Stewart or Shayera Hol. What were the long term consequences of the Annihilator armor created for Ares in JLU's horrid "Hawk and Dove" episode? Um, we got a pretty cool Suicide Squad episode where they infiltrated the Watchtower to steal it, and add it to Project Cadmus' arsenal. Quite a lot of build-up and then... Felix Faust took it on a joyride and it got destroyed in an episode that had nothing to do with their Cadmus arc. Not that I much cared for how the Cadmus arc ended... so much great set-up, and then when it got just a touch too nuanced, a convenient bad guy, without the slightest bit of hint or foreshadowing, showed up for them to beat up and no one again questioned whether the League could go rogue because they took down the big gun on the Watchtower (as if that was really the most powerful thing the League had). I, of course, bring all of this up because the acclaimed "Justice League Unlimited" may have attempted a story arc (something its predecessors never tried), but they didn't really succeed at it. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too, which is why nothing really disturbed the precious status quo. Hawkgirl betrays Earth to the Thanagarians (which was a GREAT story, by the way)? Yeah, she takes a sabbatical and comes back to the League, and the only consequences are an "I Hate Hawkgirl" chat room on the internet.

"Young Justice" knew what it was doing from the word go. Yes, there were times when I was frustrated with it, particularly early on, but it was a slow burn. The seeds were being planted. I was wondering how Red Arrow being the traitor was going to work, and in retrospect, boom, it was there since the pilot. There is not a single episode you can take out of the entire season without really losing something. It would be like removing a chapter from a novel, and that's what the first season of "Young Justice" is: an animated novel. While it did take me a while to warm up to some of the characters, hell it took some of the characters a while to warm up to each other, or in some cases warm up to themselves. But, in the end, it all came together beautifully and we got the best DC series since "Batman the Animated Series."

But how does the episode itself stack up? Pretty damn well. It's sidekick against mentor, and some of us discover whether Freud was right. I was wondering how The Team would be able to take on the League and defeat them in a manner that was credible, and they did it... thanks to the Starro Tech taking 0.16 nano-seconds to control the host, long enough for Red Tornado to arrange to save The Team. From there, it's a series of twists and turns, and all those months conducting stealth black-ops missions really would have paid off.

Vandal Savage was in top form here as we learn what his motivation is for all of this. He believes in survival of the fittest, and as the Justice League preserves the status quo, they also slow down the evolution and development of the human race. The truth of the matter is this, he is not wrong. Evolution is come about through conflict. The United States split the atom to end the second world war. The United State went to the moon to beat the the Russians there. With eternal peace, with an eternal status quo, there is no reason to go anywhere. No reason to develop. Vandal Savage has been around for fifty thousand years, he's seen every human accomplishment, and probably had a hand in at least a few. He wants us to become a galactic power, and in a universe where aliens are known to exist, he's not wrong. Weakness can lead one open to invasion (see what I did there?). However none of this makes him the good guy, far from it. What is the price of the strength he wants to give us? Our freedom. But, I think this is a great motivation and plan for Vandal Savage... and much better than the Bond villain with a gimmick from "Justice League" and "Justice League: Doom." The latter especially, where his plan there was to kill off half of the human race, deprive technology to the other half so the survivors would depend on him and make him ruler. I prefer a Vandal Savage who sees the big picture, not one who is short sighted enough to think the plan from "Doom" is a good idea. This guy is the perfect arch-enemy for The Team... an ancient, immortal against young heroes.

Red Arrow? That poor kid. Yes, he may be a clone, he may be biologically eighteen years old, but eighteen is still a kid. He was probably the biggest victim out of anybody. While he was obnoxious and disrespectful at times, he still wanted to be a hero. He still wanted to do the right thing. He couldn't help what he was, what he was programmed to do. On top of all this, he learns that he is not who he thought he was. But he wants to do the right thing, and find the original Speedy. Speaking of whom, that shot where we see the Light clearing out of Cadmus and we see the original Speedy on ice, missing an arm... talk about high octane nightmare fuel. What did the Light do to him.....

... and it really stops to make you think that this is what the Light would have done to Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad in the pilot.

But, this episode is really about The Team, and this was their finest showing to date. They saved the League and handed The Light a real defeat (or did they?). Superboy finally bonded with Superman, and it looks like Superman will finally become the mentor that Superboy needed. Kid Flash and Artemis finally kiss at midnight, and I was even more amused by Zatanna pulling Robin into a kiss.

I will say that if any member of the Team got the short end of the stick, development wise, this season, it was Aqualad. But, we're now at New Year's. Queen Mera is due in February, and Ocean Master/Prince Orm is still at large, as is Black Manta. I suspect Aqualad's real shining moments are yet to come.

I suspected that the Light would survive this season as an organization, and I'm glad they did. Things should get really interesting now that the League and The Team know that the Light exists. But even worse, six of the League members are missing sixteen hours while under Savage's control. What did they do? Whatever it was, even in defeat, the Light accomplished something and I suspect the consequences will be dire... because in all great stories, actions have consequences.

Bring on the invasion!

You know, I appreciate all the kind words about YJ, but I don't really see the point in denigrating another show here in this forum. One doesn't have to rag on JLU, in order to praise YJ - or even in order to review it. It seems neither here nor there.

Okay, here's hoping my post won't be deleted this time. To avoid posting about multiple topics in one post, I'll be leaving out the white martian stuff and just posting about Doctor Fate. This'll be more of a ramble with my thoughts and suspicions followed by some numbered questions.

What I've been curious to find out is more information about the nature of Nabu / Doctor Fate. Specifically, about what Nabu and Kent Nelson's relationship was like back when Kent Nelson was Doctor Fate. In the show, Kent Nelson says something about how it's been 60something years since he put on the helmet. That line, plus the fact that Kent Nelson had a wife, would seem to suggest that he was frequently putting the helmet on and taking it off during his tenure as Doctor Fate, which would suggest that Nabu / Doctor Fate liked Kent Nelson and trusted him not to abandon the helmet. And in "Denial" Nabu says something about the 60 years of the helmet not being put on made him feel isolated. This suggests to me that prior to that 60-year isolation, Nabu trusted humans to put the helmet on and take it off as Doctor Fate was needed. But after that time period, he no longer trusts humans to put the helmet on after it's been taken off, which is why it was so difficult to get Doctor Fate to relinquish control of Wally, Aqualad, and then Zatanna. In a way, there's a sort of mutual trust involved. The human has to trust Nabu to take the helmet off when Doctor Fate is not directly needed. But Nabu has to trust the human to put the helmet back ON and not leave him all alone forever.

Anyway, time for questions.

1. So, what was Nabu and Kent Nelson's relationship like? Did they trust each other? Are my suspicions about their relationship correct?

2. What made Kent Nelson stop wearing the helmet? My suspicion is that something went wrong in their relationship, which is why he ended up wearing the half-helmet that he made. But maybe it's something much less dramatic than that.

3. If it's true that Nabu has lost his faith that humans can be trusted to re-don the helmet from time to time to give him something to do so he can feel useful, do you think this faith can be regained? In other words, do you think Nabu could ever "heal" so to speak?

4. While Nabu is more-or-less one of the "good guys" in the sense that he does heroic acts, that shouldn't justify coercing a member of the Justice League into giving up his freedom, so why hasn't anybody on the Justice League tried to get that helmet off of Zatara?

5. I doubt Nabu really *wants* to enslave anybody but I think his desire to not be left alone and isolated outweighs that. Do you think this is correct? Would Nabu be happiest if he had a partner who would frequently put the helmet back on and take it off, or is he happiest being in constant control of his host?

???? Thanks for your answers Greg! If there's any additional light you'd like to shed on Nabu beyond the scope of my questions, feel free!

Greg responds...

1. Generally, yes.

2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

3. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

4. Who says they haven't?

5a. I think that's part of it, but not a part he'd readily admit to. In his 'mind', he MUST maintain Doctor Fate in order to safeguard the world from Chaos.

5b. I don't think he ever LIKES being powerless.

Okay subject change:

Guy Gardner writes...

Hi! I'm sure it'll be a while before you get to it, but I wanted to get this in now.

First off, I want to say that I'm a huge fan of the show. I'm a massive DC Comics guy who started off watching the animated Batman and expanded out from there, and no show has gotten me as pumped as this one has me. Also like the music on the new trailer; reminds me a lot of Alien/Aliens/Prometheus, which makes sense considering you guys are going out into space. Hopefully these questions will be quick, easy to answer, and aren't asking you to give anything away prematurely.

1) From the comic and the show, we know that there are still some JSA members running around and that they do have contact with JLA members. Were these members consulted/give advice on the formation of the League and how it was structured, or was this a completely internal thing?

2) We already know that Atlantis is a constitutional monarchy. So do they have a Parliament or Senate based around the various City-States you mentioned in the comic book? I know it's a rather dorky question, but the depth (no pun intended) you've given this version of Atlantis makes me interested.

3) Probably the question that is closest to a spoiler, and I hate asking it... but I just have to. We see an image of Blue Devil for a few seconds in "Agendas", and attached to his belt on the left side is what looks like a law enforcement badge. Am I correct in that assertion? I won't ask for any more beyond that.

4) When the other Lanterns said "No" regarding Guy Gardner, was it because of his good looks, his chiseled abs, or because they knew his ring-slinging skills would make them obsolete? All of the above is an absolutely acceptable answer.

Thanks, and I look forward to the new season!

Greg responds...

1. It was mostly "internal". But of course, the League was at least in part inspired by the Justice Society of America. And since Barry and Jay are such good friends, it was natural to seek advice.

2. Each Polis is represented in a governmental body.

3. You're correct.

4. I'll stick with "Um."

Hey Greg before asking my question I would like to praise your exellent characterization on the show. I have become fan of characters i would have ignored otherwise thanks to you (miss martian, superboy artemis Aqualad) Sure you didn't invent them but yo made them actually interesting for the casual viewer imo.

I have only have two question this time, regarding the Zeta beam portal

Due to the fact that it's technology is able to recognize the heroes (ex recognized superman 01), could that technology be abused to identify the heroe's out of their customs and their secret identities?

Is there a failsafe for that technology not to be stolen and be used to find for instance batman's secret identity?

Thanks for your time

Greg responds...

Actually, I did help invent our Aqualad, but why quibble when you're saying such nice things?!

1. In theory, but so could fingerprints or any retinal scan.

2. Of course.

I only have one question to ask... sort of.

1. How did you come up with Kaldur's character, going beyond his design and parental origin?
2. Did you originally envision him as calm and collected as he has been seen in the show, or did you have any other ideas regarding his personality?
3. When you were planning the show, was he one of the first characters you started 'fleshing out', so to speak?

Greg responds...

1. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here. It was a fairly organic process. We knew we wanted Aqualad in the show, but we wanted to increase the series' diversity, and with Garth dead in the DC Universe of the time, the void seemed to offer an opportunity to create someone new - AND simultaneously give us the chance to demonstrate "the road not taken" aspect of our Earth-16 parallel universe. We also wanted to establish Atlantis' combination of sorcery-based technology and give "Aqua-Lad" (which literally means Water-Boy) a unique power and devices (i.e. his water-bearers), which we thought would compliment the rest of the group. We based his physicality on Michael Phelps, and his costuming on a combination of Garth's original uniform and the kind of swimming 'suit' that Olympians were using back in 2004 and 2008.

2. He was always going to be the calm and quiet leader.

3. One of the first six, certainly.

Mr Weisman,

You are a busy man so I will get to the point. Here are a couple of question that as far as I can tell have not been asked yet:
1) Am I correct in thinking that a lot (if not most) of the actions scenes in Young Justice take place in the evening/nightime/otherwise dark places? If so, is this for atmosphere, or just so the kids can be heroes and still go to school?
2) Phil Bourassa's art style is really refreshing, I'm very glad to see it in YJ and also movies like "Justice League: Doom". Is there any particular name for Phil's style (like e.g. Bruce Timm's "dark deco" style used in the old Batman cartoons) or is it just "Phil's style"?

Questions over, sycophancy now, feel free to skip if you are busy.

Thank you and the whole Young Justice team for the excellent work on this show. I've been enjoying very much watching the characters and storylines develop, and I love seeing how all the strands are now coming together (final episode will air tomorrow as I write this). As someone with only a passing knowledge of the superhero genre, I can say that this show really has someone for all viewers, not just the hard-core aficionados. I wish you all continuing success with the show!

-BM

Greg responds...

1. A little from column A, a little from column B. But also columns C & D: keep in mind that a lot of nefarious activities take place after dark, and a covert team makes good use of the cover of night.

2. Shrug. I dunno. This is the first time I've heard Timm's style dubbed something specific. I mean the entire Batman series was certainly Dark Deco, I suppose, and certainly Bruce's work fits and inspires that, but there's nothing that screams 'deco' (or even dark) to me about his character designs in a vacuum. But what do I know? Anyway, Phil's stuff is Phil's stuff. His style, as you put it is just "Phil's style". It's more realistic than, say, Cheeks'. But I'm not too big on labels.

3. Thanks!

2. Being teenage superheros that fight crime mostly during odd hours of the night or going on long undercover missions, how do they continuously come up with excuses for missing school so often or for such long periods of time? It's pretty suspicious.

Greg responds...

1. Hmmm. I like to think so. But it's moot now.

2. If you look at the length of their missions, they're probably missing less school than you think. A lot of them fit into a single weekend. And it's only suspicious because you can make the connection. No one at their various schools is going to see an Wally's occasional absence as proof that he's Kid Flash. Ditto for Dick Grayson - and I'll even stretch that to include Raquel Ervin. And keep in mind, the general public doesn't even know that Superboy, Miss Martian, "Artemis" and "Zatanna" exist. I've read on the internet that Earth-16 was chosen for the setting of Young Justice because, in the eyes of the public, superheroes are considered to be a relatively recent phenomenon.
