*DIES LAUGHING* I see the humor in it, does that mean I am likely to be killed for finding it funny?

I'm not sure I should find this funny, but....Elisa was sleeping during the attack on 9/11. LOL One day, I actually wondered what a show about it would be like and yeah, I saw Elisa being woken up by the sounds of the explosions...and thinking Xanatos was up to no good again ;)

There's also a lot riding on the third film of a trilogy; more than rides on the first or second films. The first movie in a series lets the audience get to know the characters and the world. There are no prior expectations. (Well, there are, from the hype and promotion or the original source material if the film is based on something else, but that's a different matter.) Sometimes, there is no plan for another movie when the first movie is made. Even if there is an idea for a follow-up film or two, there's seldom a garauntee that subsequent films will be made. So the first film is often a self contained story that doesn't rely on sequels to finish out the plot.

The second movie in a trilogy usually only happens if the first movie was successful. If a trilogy is in the works, the filmmakers can now rely on the fact that there will be a third film. If the movies are meant to have a continuing story, part two will often end with a number of story threads hanging, leaving the audience clamoring to know what happens in part three. Movie number 2 does have some expectations riding on it from the first film. A good sequel will balance the audience's desire to see something similar to the original film with the need to have something new and even more exciting this time around. New characters, new settings, bigger conflicts, and expansions upon themes from the original film are some devices sequels employ to keep audiences from just staying home and watching the original on DVD.

The third film in a trilogy suffers from the greatest pressure of expectations. The final movie must tie up any remaining plot and character threads from the first and second films while having an interesting arc of its own. The hope for a trilogy is that each film will be better than the last. To compete with the "newness" of the original movie, the sequels have to expand on the groundwork and really give the audience something new. The third film is the one that needs to do that the most, but sometimes the pressure of high expectations and the need to bring everything to a satisfying conclusion make for a movie that's weaker than what came before.

I'm not saying this is the entire reason third films in a series tend to be weak. There are a lot of other potential factors, such as increased studio attention/meddling, issues with actors, issues with finances, or moviemakers believing the hyp about themselves. And when it comes down to it, sometimes people just make mediocre movies. But there's no reason that a third film can't rise to the occasion and really bring a beloved series to a satisfying end. Personally, I'm just waiting to see what happens with the Pixar helmed "Toy Story 3".

Trilogies> I agree with everything said here so far. "Return Of The Jedi" was absolute crap, but "Return Of The King" was exquisite. Most 3rd installments in a trilogy fall flat, however.

Look at the Scream trilogy. I myself LOVED Scream 3 since it wrapped up the story so well, but I've heard a lot of people had problems with it.

I'm now pondering the possibility that disappointment in the 3rd film(s) may be merely a psychoactive response to the end of a Trilogy. Perhaps we get so involved in a trilogy that when the 3rd one arrives, we on a subconscious level don't WANT the story to end and so feel disappointment in the final installment.

Of course I could be completely wrong in this, but I think it could be a strong factor.

SEQUEL-ITIS -- For the most part, I agree that follow-up movies to originals tend to fall flat on delivery.

I have seen there has been some exceptions to this rule. Certainly "Dead Man's Chest" is one, as is "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King". "Aliens" as well, but I'll be honest that I really can't give a definete comparision on that vs. its predecessor, since I cannot watch "Alien" to save my life.

"RETURN OF THE JEDI" -- If the ending was such a disappointment, I have to ask just what would you have done instead to end that story, Greg?

"GARGS/24 CROSSOVER" -- This is something I don't hear of too much; crossing animated shows with live-action shows.

It reminds me of one story I started (and never finished) that crossed Gargoyles with "Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues". Demona sought a ancient Chinese dagger that would separate her "chi" from Macbeth's, and allow her to kill him. The dagger was separated into its component parts, and in tracking them down, she drew the attention of both the NYPD and the SFPD, as well as that of Kane and his son Peter.

It was somewhat fun to write . . . especially when I had a scene of the gargoyles meeting the Ancient One at the Apothocary Shop.

WARCRAFTER -- Curious to know, you commented that my Gargs/TMNT story ended not the way you expected . . . what were you expecting, can I ask? ^_^

Number Three> You could make the argument that Lord of the Rings is exempt from the rule since it was a trilogy of books before being a trilogy of movies, and I seldom hear the third part slump criticism leveled at books. My personal feeling is that the second and third "Martix" are equally bad and that the second Indiana Jones film is the weakest, but the Indiana Jones films are more episodic and not a continuing story.

Matt> Usually, the third movies in trilogies suffer a major drop in quality compared to the ones that came before.

For example, "Return of the Jedi" was a terrible follow up to "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back". A very disappointing ending.

"Alien 3" was an abomination. The first two movies, however, were excellent.

I hear a lot of people complain about the third Matrix movie, but as someone who hated the first Matrix, I did not bother with either of the two sequels.

While I did not have as many problems with X-Men 3 as a lot of other people, it was still a huge step down from the first two movies.

There are some exceptions to the rule. "The Return of the King" was a superior movie to "The Two Towers"

A friend of mine was working on a Gargoyles/Sin City thing for a while. Interesting idea. She asked me to peruse a scene with Goliath, and I could not stop thinking about Keith David's role in "Reqiuem For a Dream." I think she's since scrapped the project.

Hmmmm, I like the idea of the "Gargoyles/24" thing. "I'm Elisa Maza, and this is the longest night of my life." Only problem is, the gargoyles won't be in it from sunrise to sunset.

Blaqthorne: A fuschia Bronx? Sounds like an unused clone to me. ( ; Hmmm, speaking of which, how come Sevarius never cloned Bronx?

Kingcobra: I think Demona would skip right to the killing. If various scenes from the show are any indication, she gets off on that enough.

Matt: Amazon.com still has it listed as September 28th.

Patrick: My energy level is kind of low at the moment. You ARE trying to be clever, right?

And no, I still don't have the cable back yet. This is, again, on someone else's computer. But I'm not missing anything on TV. I actually watched my "Back to the Future" DVDs yesterday, and realized that while Part III still suffers from the affliction that affects the third part in most trilogies, it was actually not as bad as I remembered it.

Though the intention may be good, what Patrick says is true. You can probably count on one hand the number of internet petitions that have worked. There have been petitions requesting that Disney revive "Gargoyles" since the show ended and nothing has come of it. The fact is, companies just don't pay attention to online petitions unless a ridiculously large number of people sign them (and even then, it's usually a petition telling the company that the signers won't buy something unless a change is made that gets attention.) This petition currently has 14 signature, and even if we do get more (say, the largest number of Gathering atendees, it's unlikey to be enough to do anything.

I thought of something recently....

If any of you happen to be fans of MST3K, you may have stumbled across RiffTrax (linked to my name). Mr. Mike Nelson continues the MST3K tradition of poking fun at movies that very much deserve it. (The most recent film to get the treatment is "Crossroads" with Britney Spears.) How do they get around the fact that copyrights for such movies are very expensive? Simple. No movie included. You, the consumer, rent (or buy, if you like wasting money and shelf space) the film to be riffed. Then you purchase the MP3 for said movie from RiffTrax, which does not contain any snippet of the film itself, other than a few pieces of dialogue read by voice without form Disembodio to help you keep the track synched up. Load the MP3 into your preferred MP3 playing device, start the DVD a playing, follow the MP3 instructions to get the two synched up and there you be. You get an enjoyable hour or two, Mike Nelson and crew get a couple of your hard earned dollars, and the movie rental place and film studio get you to shell out to see a film that you might not give the time of day to otherwise. (I, unfortunately, have seen "Crossroads" without the benefit of humor commentary, and I do not reccomend it.

So what does this have to do with "Gargoyles"? Well, think about it. We never did get that commentary on "Deadly Force", which was supposed to happen, but ultimately was cut in favor of finishing out all 5 episodes of "Awakening". If anything was recorded, it's the property of Disney and not likely to be heard unless they decided to release it. But what if Greg decided to do a new commentary, or do one for a completely different episode? I know, we have the episode rambles, but audio commentaries cold reach a bunch of people who aren't stopping by the site and looking through the Ask Greg archives. And if, say, a couple of voice actors, writers, and other crew members were to join in, we could get any number of new fun tidbits. With net phone services like Skype around, it's increasingly possible to put together a podcast on the cheap. Of course, the big potential benefit would be people seeing the pdocast and picking up the DVDs to listen to the commentary.

Now I'm no expert on anything I'm talking about here. So this could be a completely stupid idea with big gaping technical or legal problems. But from what little I do know, it seems like it might be something worth trying out. Round up som "Gargoyles" show alums, record a fun commentary, throw in a plug for the comic, and you may have a pretty cool new form of advertizing for the "Gargoyles" franchise.

Thoughts? Comments? Tomatoes?

I actually wondered about a Sopranos/Gargs crossover once. It never really amounted to much, and I remember it seemed to me that Tony Dracon and Johnny Sac going at it would be a likely intro to something where a lot of fun could happen. Or Fox and Carmela meeting up, getting to know each other...

Greg Bishansky> I personally see Tony and Demona fighting over who gets to be the dominant one.

If Tony lost, Demona would probably kill him, probably after having her way with him, if she does at all. Not likely she would, though.

Yeah, the House/Gargoyles crossover will be a while, but it will be coming. You know me; when am I going to give up the chance to say "gargoyles" and "thrombocytopenia" or "choledocholelithiasis" in the same sentence?

Sadly, it won't have House meeting Demona, though having him diagnose her as a "psychotic, bipolar whackjob" might come up in a sequel. ;-)

CROSSOVERS -- Now this is something I'm very versed and familiar with, considering a lot of my first fanfic writing attempts were crossovers with Gargoyles.

My first one was probably one of the most improbable crosses anyone could've thought of: Gargoyles and Disney's Gummi Bears! It was a fun romp, and it lead to writing several others... such as Gargs and Swat Kats, Gargs and He-Man/She-Ra, and Gargs and Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers. (All three of those stories are up on my page at FF.net!)

STORMY -- Re: Gargs/Darker TMNT : Well, I didn't exactly mirror the original Eastman/Laird black & white comics, but I did write a crossover with these two and I'm in the middle of revising the story to reflect the characters in the recent TMNT series.

The overall plot was that Demona -- still looking for ways to destroy humanity and reclaim the clan from Goliath -- found an ancient treasure that could only be opened by one of the Hamato Ninja Clan. Using a scrying spell, she locates the closest being that COULD come from that clan; which turns out to be Splinter, the turtles guardian and teacher. She kidnaps him, an act that is witnessed by Leonardo, which leads the rest of the turtles to seek out the gargoyles to get him back. There's the atypical accusations/confrontation scene, which moves on to the two groups working to find Splinter together... but, you'll have to read the story to see if Splinter is saved, or if Demona wins this time out. ^_^

TODD -- I've mentioned this before, but I still have that one "X-Men: Evolution/Gargoyles" story idea, in which a teenaged Alexander -- rebeling against Puck and his parents -- is sent to Xavier's school to learn how to better control his abilities with magic.

That's all from me for now...

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

There's something that's always bugged me that I thought I'd bring up now that we're discussing crossovers. Is it just me, or does Mystique (in the comics/cartoon, obviously, not the movie) look a heck of a lot like our Demona? Granted, M's get up is more similar to Angela's, but they still both have blue skin, redhair, bad attitudes ect. Also they havve children who disagree with their views (I'm assuming much on Nightcrawler, as I never really that big an X fan and haven't even seen the third movie yet- though given what they did to Rogue, I don't think it'd make that big a difference.)

I remember about 10 years ago planning huge crossover with my favourite superhero cartoons with Gargoyles/X-men/TMNT (1980s cartoon)/Fantastic 4/Biker Mice from Mars/Mighty Ducks.

The Villian that was going to be in charge was Apocalypse who gathers all the other villians Magneto, Sinister and the Nasty Boys, Mystique, Sabretooth, Juggernault, Demona, Jackle, Hyena, Wolf, Coldsteal, Dr Doom, Shredder Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, Limburger, Karbunkle, Greasepit (from Biker Mice), Dragaunis, Siege, Chameleon, Wraith, Dr Droid (From Mighty Ducks)

I sort of planned that Apocalypse built a machine to drain all the superheros poweres strenghs ect to make them weaker and their strenghs and powers get transported into the villians (Sounds Stupid I know).

Some of the Superhero's friends like Elisa, David and Fox Xanatos, April, Casey Jones, Splinter ect will all join up and help them escape and it will end up a huge fight but it be the heroes won't be fighting there own villians like Brooklyn vs Dr Doom, Angela vs Mystique, Cyclops vs Jackle ect ect.

I did plan using the Increadible Hulk in it but under mind control and he would be fighting Goliath.

Shara> Thanks for the link. :)

I would cross over Gargoyles with Ninja Turtles (preferably one of the darker versions of it). They share the same city, with the Turtles hiding under the city streets while the Gargoyles hide above eye level. At first, each side would mistake the other for evil (the Gargoyles would think the Turtles were more of Sevarius' mutants while the Turtles would think the Gargoyles were some kind of Foot Clan baddies) but then they would come to an understanding and join together to address groups like the Quarrymen who didn't like them because they aren't human. We could also tie the Japanese clan in somehow :)

"I'de like to see a Gargoyles/anime series crossover, seeing as that gargoyles is one of the few U.S. cartoons to try emulating japanese style animation into their work. For instance, when Goliath and Lex take down the first Coyote robot, the background goes all blurry to show the characters are moving fast (like in an anime, makes things more dramatic). Plus, gargoyles utilzies deeper, more complex and adult type plots and storylines just like anime shows do, making it more appealing to older viewers (love triangles, blood, life and death, etc).
I'de love to see Alucard from Hellsing take on Demona, immortal against immortal, just to see who'de come out on top! Alucard would probably love her, considering how he's always on the lookout for opponents who are powerful enough to challenge him, and share his bloodlust. j/k :P

Seriously, though, what about a Gargoyles/WWE crossover? I could easily see Goliath stomping any wrestler's face into the ground. Xanatos and Vince McMahon become business partners, Broadway starts breaking into every wrestler's dressing room to eat their food, Lex starts placing bets on the outcome of every fight, and Brooklyn 'falls in love' with either Lita or Trish Stratus or both.

Sounds OOC in some aspects, I know, but just imagine the possibilities.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582@hotmail.com]

Dragomir -- heh heh! Funny you should mention that; I had exquisite fun writing my Gargs/Hellsing crossover fanfic, Silver Bullets, last year. Due largely to timeline issues, I included only Integra and Alucard in it, but as Puck would say, it was a merry (if dark) romp indeed. Suffice it to say that the Manhattan clan were quite relieved to see the Hellsing agents head home at the end.

Gargoyles merchandise> The Bronx alarm clock kinda pissed me off since I brought it to this year's Gathering in order to actually use it at the Motel 6's for it's actual purpose, only to find that the cheapness of it caused the plastic hands to curl up and block each other, thus making it useless. It is cool looking, though. I remember picking it up for $5 at Best Buy. Should have grabbed a few since they had an entire 3'x3'x3' bin full of them.
My favorite pieces are, like pretty much everyone that has them, the large Applause figurines. I still wish I could get my hands on the UK accurate Demona.
Other than those, I'd say the Pen Party pens, wallet cards, playing cards, the beautiful beach towel of Goliath hanging by one hand from a building (used on several pieces of merch including the 3-ring binders and folders), and the card game are among my favorites.
As for my favorite action figure... surprise, surprise, it's Bronx. Followed by the fuschia repaint Bronx. The Xanatos figure that comes with the Roadster ranks pretty high.
I seem to remember hearing that possible candidates for the second group of figures was the Pack. I almost want to say that they actually had models for them which made it into some publication. They did actually have the model for one of the vehicles which held a prone figure on it which never actually got produced. I believe it's on the back of the cards for the 2nd group of figures.
As for promo stuff that I picked up, the 3-foot high standie for the video game is sweet--picked that one up from a comic book shop. The video game and VHS promo pins are nifty.

Piece of merchandise I would most liked to have seen would have to be a plush Bronx.

Shara> They're still showing Saved by the Bell? Pee-Wee's Playhouse I can kinda understand since it has a lot of claymation throughout--I can still remember my late Art teacher showing an episode in 4th grade because of all the claymation in the opening segment. Interestingly enough, one of the sources for "Gargoyles" is a crossover. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a crossover between Greek mythology (Theseus and Hippolyta) and English faerie-lore (Oberon and Puck - Titania was Shakespeare's invention). Oberon and the other fairies don't interact directly with Theseus on-stage, but it's strongly hinted in the dialogue that Titania had taken a strong interest in Theseus in the past and was even responsible for his abandoning Ariadne on Naxos.

(And now I've just had a creativity demon of the Gargoyles cast doing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with Oberon, Titania, and Puck playing themselves, and Vinnie playing Bottom - I think that he'd definitely be great for that role!)

And "Gargoyles" has included a few crossover elements of a sort in it, in the way that it brings different mythologies into contact with each other, as in King Arthur encountering Macbeth, or Oberon breaking up a duel between Odin and the Banshee.

I don't really like crossovers. In fact, I think they're bloody awful. But I think a '24'/'Gargoyles' thing could be interesting. The gargoyles/NYPD thread would replace the Jack/CTU stuff, although with a Palmer or Logan thread alongside it. Maybe set the Christmas after 'Hunter's Moon'. Long night.

On the subject of Gargoyles merchandise, what is the most unusual piece of gargoyles merchandise have you seen/do you own?

Among mine:
The Goliath Talking Bank('nuff said...acutally it doesn't cause I don't feed him enough)
The Bronx Alarm Clock(that was really hard to get)
A gargoyles Door mat(which I paid $75 bucks for at my first Gathering auction in NY 1998.)
The Gargoyles Toothbrush Kit-with with a soap holder, toobrush holder, carry bag & such.
Gargoyles Towel - have one with a bright blue Blue Goliath(guess they couldn't get him the right color)surrounded by bright green, yellow and black...it's awsome
Gargoyles Kite - still have it in the package... Never had the heart to fly it(mind you I'm 40 and would look like a fool doing it ^_^
Gargoyles sleeping bag-much too small for me to use, but fun to have. Somehow I don't think A gargoyle would need one of these though.
There are several Gargoyle backpacks/carry bags and lunch bags. For a species that don't need posessions, Disney certainly didn't quite get the theme of the show when they licensed all those carry alls for all that human "Stuff"(George Carlin would have a heyday with that).

Anyway, I've ranted enough about my weird Garg stuff, what do you peeps got?

Wingless

Gargoyles don't change weights when they turn to stone. How could they? Thats like saying if you take a cup of water and freeze it it would be heavier. Gargoyles weigh the same at night as they do during the day. Keep in mind that they don't actually turn to stone, but an organic substace resembling stone in many ways.

oooo ooo ok while watching gargoyles just now I finally thought of a question ooo oo raises hand although I bet it's been answered.

The skiff boat thingy that elisa and goliath etc are on during the avalon journey . It is made of wood correct? How come it does'nt sink when goliath and angela and bronx turn to stone , they must weigh a ton. You would think it would sink and elisa would have to fish for gargoyle statues.

and why is peewees play house and saved by the bell on adult swim on the cartoon network. This frightens me.

Remember the old Gargoyles comics!

SIREN - Sorry, but I abandoned that fic years ago and even deleted the rough draft for it (I'd simply lost interest in it, I suppose).

Another dreadful crossover idea: Castaway attempts to start up a Quarryman chapter in Springfield, but decides that it wasn't such a good idea after many of the recruits (particularly Homer) decide to find other uses for their hammers besides going after any gargoyles that might show up in town, as in Homer needing to have an internal wall removed from his house and decides to knock it down with his Quarryhammer rather than hiring a professional to do it - followed by the house in ruins and Homer, after looking at the devastation, saying, "Maybe I turned the power up just a little too much".

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Todd, I wish you would finish that fan-fic :P Though I can't say much, I'm still working on a Gargoyles/Buffy fan fic. So far, I have them arriving at Sunnydale and having a run-in with Spike. He in turns gets back to the Scoobies about the demons calling themselves gargoyles and Giles gets excited about looking in his books to find references to living gargoyles (but of course, finds none). I still haven't decided who the villian would be. I was thinking Macbeth and finding a reason for him to be there, likely to find something mystical to meet his needs. Or I was thinking of having everything take place when the Initiutive was still active in Sunnydale. I'm sure they'd like to get their hands on the gargoyles.

Speaking of Bronx, I can't wait to see the interaction between Bornx and Fu-Dog when he arrives. It'll be fun to have another beast in the Clan. Jurgan, I misunderstood him. That was my fault.

Matt, no I never met Steve Irwin, shook his hand, or got to give the man my personal thanks. However, between myself and my 7 year old daughter, a day didn't go by where we weren't watching him. When you see a man, who used the camera not just to educate, but to see his own personal triumphs and falls, and you see him so much, you KNOW him. You don't need to meet him face to face to feel for his death. The morning after I heard of it, I had to tell my daughter the news. That her idol, the man who got her so deeply interested in animals, that got her to love reading because she wants to read everything about animals, and got her into want to save them, was dead. I had to hold her for a long time before we both stopped crying. A day hasn't gone by where Steve hasn't come into our conversations. We don't cry anymore about it, but its made us even stronger to continue the work he inspired in us. He wasn't a celebrity, at least not to us. He was a man with a mission and he has inspired a world to take notice, of every animal, not just the cute ones. He was like a friend to us. Especially to my daughter. So getting over it, isn't an option. And I'm not the only one talking about it. When the discussion on him ends, I certainly wasn't planning on starting again. Sometimes to make something go away is to discuss it less. Yes, the approach you made about the subject made it worse. Its a life lesson for you. If you don't want to read about it, just skip over the posts that mention his name. Eventually, it will stop.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

Jurgen is right. In fact, what I was meaning was that I was amazed that people were still going on about Steve Irwin and no one had mentioned Sept. 11th.

I'd rather talk about Sept. 11th than about some tv celebrity.

As for talking about death. Many people over the years have come into this Room and talked about loved ones dieing. Friends, parents, grandparents. I respect every one of these people, and I am sorry for their lose. I understand that this page is more than simply a page where Gargoyles information is exchanged between fans. This page is a community. We are a community. I've made friendships with several people in this community, and it is always interesting to hear about (and talk about) events in our lives not related to Gargoyles. As far as I know, no one who has posted here in the last week or so knew Steve Irwin personally. I was glad Leo brought to our attention that he had died. This, as I said, is somewhat traditional in here. I don't have a problem with it. But I do admit that as the days drew on and that was all we talked about I began to get annoyed. Others didn't, and thats fine, but as we came into a new week and people began bringing up Gargoyles related topics I had hoped we were moving on. And then some people begin to continue the Steve Irwin conversation. Yes, I was annoyed and probably shouldn't have rolled my eyes, but I was sincere when I asked that they please take the Steve Irwin conversation elsewhere.
You have only to compare the amount and diversity of posts and posters last week to any other recent week to see that it was a very slow one with few people having much to say. All I'm saying is that here, in this community, I feel we should be moving on.

That said, I'm sorry (again) that I'm being so pragmatic about this. I respect that many of you are still mourning Steve Irwin. That is fine. I know I can get a bit "holier than though" in here at times, even Greg W has commented on it (which, I should add, really got me thinking about my behavior in here). So, I probably should've made my opinion in a nicer tone. Sorry 'bout that.

Anyway, my hope is we can move on from this debacle before it becomes more of an issue and this week turns into another week where few people have anything to say. Sorry if I offended anyone. I hope I've made my feelings clear.

Unfortunatly people die everyday. And only a handful effect a lot of people. And this is how people grieve. They talk about it.

Matt, may I hope that the day someone important to you dies and you need to talk, people will be inclined to listen till their ears fall off. "get over it" attitude doesn't piss me off, makes me sad you can seem to contemplate how grief effects people differently. If you don't want to hear about 9/11....I suggest you crawl under a rock for the next 20 years, but then again, we'll probably still talk about it. Don't come online on 9/11 and complain about hearing about it.

Matt >> << think many of us were hoping that a new week would bring a new topic. >>

Not sure where "many of us" comes from, but it is as fine a logic fallacy as any.

<< One only has to look at the slowness and infrequent posts of last week to know that most people are rather tired of discussing this here. >>

Actually, there is no logical connection there at all. If one had something better to talk about, one would contribute it, rather than create a petty meta-subject to bash the previous subject for lack of anything better to do.

<< Today is September 11th and no one has bothered to mention it >>

Today is 9/11/2006, not 9/11/2006. Honestly, I've got a lot of feelings in relation to what happened 5 years ago, but I'm not entirely sure I want to throw in my $0.02 on it here and now. Suffice it to say taking 5 years in retrospect there are a number of folks I'm feeling less than charitable towards.

<< I'm sorry, I'm just getting bored of the Steve Irwin discussion, and I'm a zoologist! >>

"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?"

Wait a minute. That's not the right Australian at all ... :(

Anyway, if you are bored, the appropriate response it to start a discussion about something else. The inappropriate response is to start a meta-discussion about how you are bored with a prior topic.

<<Hell, I remembered today that I first learned of the Sept. 11th attacks when I woke up and switched on the computer and read what everyone was writing in here!>>

Here, I'll work with you a bit here while biting my tongue on what I'm feeling in regards to the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks. I was in class when the planes hit. I went by to my apartments and sat around with my roommates watching what was going on and contacting people on the Web. It was 90% haze, and 10% lucid conversation by my recollections. The one thing I remember very clearly about this was that it was ~ on ~. No more pretending terrorists aren't a real threat. No more pretending diplomacy was going to keep everyone safe. No more pretending Islamic Jihadists were Israel's problem. The terrorist networks that made this possible and the terror networks and sponsors attempting to do the same were going to face a full war no matter where they ran to or who they hid behind.

Marty "Kaioto" Lund - [kaioto@yahoo.com]

STORMY - I once began (but never finished) a crossover fic between "Gargoyles" and "X-Men: Evolution" (which would have been appropriate since Frank Paur's worked on both shows). It had the X-Men sent by Xavier to New York to investigate what appeared to be a new mutant signature that Cerebro had picked up coming from the Eyrie Building (which turned out to actually be Alex's magic lessons - apparently halfling magic can get mistaken for mutant abilities by Cerebro), and getting into a clash with the Quarrymen who had mistaken Nightcrawler for a gargoyle. (You've got to admit, it's an easy mistake to make.)

It included a few oddball pieces of recustomizing "X-Men" to the Gargoyles Universe which I thought were amusing, such as the Hellfire Club being part of the Illuminati Society and the Sentinel project originally being designed as anti-gargoyle rather than anti-mutant (with Dr. Trask having had the misfortune of encountering gargoyles twice before - first, he'd worked at Cyberbiotics, only to be in the tower the night that the trio broke in, and then left to get a job at the Golden Cup Bakery Building only to be there the night that Coldstone broke in and got infected with the virus). And Graydon Creed as an up-and-coming officer in the Quarrymen - with a scene where Castaway, faced with accusations about the Quarrymen being violent troublemakers who go around destroying other people's property, indignantly states, "We are not the enemy; the gargoyles are. We are the friends of humanity!", whereupon Graydon comments, "Friends of humanity. I like the sound of that."

I wound up dropping it, though I'd had plans for a couple of sequels (turning it into a trilogy) - one in which Demona and Magneto would enter into an uneasy alliance, and one in which the Sentinels would finally get unleashed on the gargoyles and X-Men - only to wind up becoming more trouble than Dr. Trask had expected thanks to the fact that the industrial company whom he had contacted to help him build the Sentinels turns out to be run by a certain reclusive Alexander T. Edmund - and guess what the "T" in his name stands for!

How about "The Sopranos". Mafia politics between Tony Soprano's gang, and Tony Dracon's gang. Except I doubt mafia politics would interest too many people.

One only has to look at the slowness and infrequent posts of last week to know that most people are rather tired of discussing this here. Today is September 11th and no one has bothered to mention it... Steve Irwin is dead. One man dies in an accident and everyone goes nuts. Its like the whole Dale Earnhardt death. The fact that they were on tv and died playing with stingrays or racing cars doesn't make them heroes. Is it sad they are dead, sure, but millions of people die everyday. People who make major contributions to the world and are not recognized on tv or anywhere.

Marty: Well said. The number of animals Irwin saved speaks for itself. I can understand if some people feel that he was harassing animals- certainly they didn't seem to enjoy being picked up- but the fact is that he never actually hurt any of them. Ideally, I think it's better to watch from a distance. The problem with that, though, is that it contributes to the attitude that we can treat human society and "the wilderness" as two separate spheres. At the same time, we encroach more and more on animals' habitats. Showing animals at a distance only reinforces the idea that they can remain at a distance. I'm not saying all of this is conscious- certainly seeing a man wrestling a crocodile has a sensationalist impact- but treating animals as a charming curiosity we can simply watch from afar is an incredibly dangerous attitude that keeps people ignorant of the real impact we have on their habitats.
Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

Considering that there is a room-archival between the OP and my response, let me clarify something. My comments are not directed at Whit, but rather to the sods working the dirt sheets and stroking their egos down at the universities who produce such garbage as that "poem" over at the Globe and Mail. Their public snobbery serves only themselves and shows that they've completely given up on the idea of coming close to achieving even a fraction of what the Irwin family has done in such a small period of time.
Marty "Kaioto" Lund - [kaioto@yahoo.com]

Whitbourne >> Seriously, the amount of ignorant vitrol springing from the mouths of snobs that know absolutely nothing about Steve Irwin, his family, or his conservation works is simply staggering.

Of course, ignorance has never been a barrier to the media and other pseudo-intellectual snobs trying to make themselves feel important by taking shots at anyone who makes them feel inferior.

If Steve Irwin had a drinking problem, several bastard offspring, and corrupted children with degenerate moral fallacies on a regular basis he'd have been a rockstar - and thusly the darling of the same people who now feel compelled to be his detractors.

Seriously, those who actually learned about the programs Steve was involved with know better - and there are a whole lot of them. It just makes shmucks like this look more stupid than usual.

Consider this, Steve's big start was Queensland's rogue crocodile relocation program. The "safe," "normal," and "hand's off" approach to the problems he approach was to kill the animals in question. Steve volunteered his life and limb to keep them alive. That set the tone for his entire career. The money he made from television went to habitat preservation and restoration for animals, not mansions and jewelry.

So when the snobbish idiots start waving their PETA banners screaming "look at me!" to prattle on about their perverted notions of animal cruelty and exploitation I can see it for what it is - ignorance and envy, the compulsive need to tear down your betters.

One thing that I seriously doubt that we'll be seeing in Issue #3 (but which I can't resist imagining anyway):

Bronx suddenly barges into Xanatos's Halloween party at the castle, heads straight for the buffet table, and proceeds to place his front paws on the table and start eagerly devouring all the food. Shortly afterwards, Owen is hauling him back by the scruff of his neck to the rest of the clan, and telling them sharply to keep their pet under control from now on and not permit him to cause further disruption to Mr. Xanatos's social events. Bronx, for his own part, is contentedly licking his chops.
