Disney has what I called Corporate Syndrome. Big corporations see themselves as big powerful untouchable entities, which in turn leads to very stupid and unintelligent decisions because they believe they can never be wrong. WCW is a good example of this, WCW was owned by Ted Turner and was whooping the WWF for a few years because of their power. They kept "buying" WWFs wrestlers, but they kept recycling the nWo plotline for too long. It became stale and since most of their popularity had been because of it, they didn't know what to do. They started doing things well... wrong as far as decision making went. Hogan even tried to warn them that they were making mistakes and they needed to fix things. Their response? "Hogan we thought you knew what you were talking about. Vince can't beat us, you're fired!" Well guess what? Vince McMahon purchased WCW a year or 2 later.

Sony is suffering from it now. They revolutionized online gaming with everquest, Now their subscribers is about equal to 2% of World of Warcrafts and they've slowly been making stupid mistakes in the console war causing bad sales with both the PS3 and PSP.

Sure not all corporations are like this but when one makes a stupid mistake now it doesn't surprise me. Because corporate big wigs can't ever believe they're wrong about something.

JURGAN> Yeah, I've been hearing that "Gargoyles" sales are going up. You're not the first to report a shop saying they need to up orders. I guess now that the book is coming out on schedule, or at least closer to schedule, things are improving.

Disney threatened to sue a day care in Florida once too. This was a couple of decades ago. And Universal Studios Orlando was just about to open its doors, they took the opportunity to get good PR and offered to bring in their own park artists to repaint the daycare walls with Scooby Doo, the Jetsons, Flintstones, Woody Woodpecker, etc, all for free. So Disney looked like scum and Universal came out smelling like flowers.

Also my example of drawing Mickey Mouse and selling it is different than the businesses who paint them on their walls. Disney feels threatened by businesses using their characters to make money. While go to ANY convention and you will see 1000s of copyrighted characters drawn by artists who don't own them selling the art for $5-$1500+. My friends got a bunch of Star Wars and Star Trek artwork by a guy at a convention, beautiful stuff. He doesn't own the rights and made a couple of thousand dollars off them. I have Disney and DC characters artwork framed on my walls that artists at conventions did, they didn't own the characters. Any day of the week, the FBI could have a field day at the conventions, but they don't. The government makes too much on taxes for it.

I think what everyone's saying, and it's good advice, is: Don't take it personally. Yeah, it sucks that Disney doesn't pay us a lot of attention, but it's not intended as a slight. They just follow the money, which is what corporations are built for. If they thought there was a lot of money in Gargoyles, you can bet they'd be all over it. We just have to be the ones to convince them that there is money to be made. Again, it sucks, but that's how it is.

I've been avoiding this place because I don't yet have my copy of #6. I should get it tomorrow. I went to my local store on release day and they'd sold out. They ordered me my regular two copies, but I think I also heard them say "We need to up our orders of Gargoyles." If I understood correctly, that's definitely good news. A shame that they may end up having to exchange them.

Siren "I could draw a picture of Mickey Mouse and sell it at a convention for $15, I would be breaking a law, but they don't go after people for it."

Actually they'd probably sue you for all your worth over that. There was an ice cream store near here where they had painted disney characters on the side of the building to make the place look nice for kids, Disney threatened to sue them. A no name ice cream shop, Disney threatened to sue them over what could be considered fanart on the side of the building for decoration.

So they had to paint over it with a plain color and it's a real shame because that thing looked really good so it couldn't have been easy to make.

Demonskrye: As for whether Disney would sell "Gargoyles", I'm reminded of one of the multipart "DuckTales" episodes, where Scrooge unknwingly acquires a golden goose statue that can transform anything into gold. Thinking it's just a piece of junk, Scrooge puts it up for sale in a shop of his. His rival Flintheard Glomgold sees the goose and, realizing its true value, wants to buy it. Scrooge keeps increasing the price and finally reveals that, now that he knows Glomgold is interested in teh goose, he no longer has any intetion of selling it. It's true that Disney may not want anyone tarnishing their image by purchasing a property of theirs and then adding explicit content to it (though given some of the stuff that's gotten through in the comic, I think it would have to be pretty blantant to really upset Disney). But one thing no media company ever wants to do is to own a property, seel it, and then watch as the person they sold it to makes a fortune with it. It makes the people who decided to let the property go look very, very bad. So if someone did come forward and offer t buy "Gargoyles" from Disney for a large sum of money, I think their response would be less like "Sure! Were not doing much with it anyways!" and more like "Hmm, now why would anyone be offering us a big chunk of cash for the rights to a lesser known adventure concept we did over ten years ago?". At best, it might make someone at Disney take another look at doing something with "Gargoyles". But once they became aware someone else was willing to pay for it, I think it would be even harder to get Disney to part with the rights.

And it would seem that Disney is insightful in that area. Yet they're not insightful enough to release that the low sales of their comics are brought on by the delay of approving.

They delay approvals because they aren't bringing in as much money as the other properties, but delaying them for that reason only reduce any possible profit that the books would have brought in.

Antiyonder

You'll see the Statue of Liberty holding a copy of the Qur'an before Disney, or really any of these conglomerates sell their intellectual property.

Warner Bros won't even sell B'wana Beast, and Disney won't even let go of Clarabelle Cow.

Besides, Disney is currently making a profit off "Gargoyles". The SLG licensing deal is free money to them. They don't have to do anything or spend a dime, and SLG pays them to use the property. As for why approvals take a while, well, I imagine the Disney Princess books are a much higher priority at the licensing office. Those books sell extremely well, we're not even a drop in the bucket in comparison.

Rebel> I think it's more of an all encompasing directive to protect their copyrighted material than any fear that someone might make a video that protrayed Disney owned characters in an adult way. I'm sure they wouldn't be happy if someone did do that, but preventing people from posting stuff they own for free viewing is a much bigger concern. The problem is that Disney and many other entertainment companies don't distinguish between the person making an original video using clips from movies and shows and the person posting full movies or episodes, let alone between the person posting the entire "Gargoyles" episode "The Mirror" (which is available on DVD) and the person posting "Turf" (which is not). From Disney's perspective, it's much easier to call for all videos featuring Disney material to be pulled from YouTube than to try to determine what constitutes a harmless fan-made video intended to help promote or celebrate the property in question and what's just plain old copyright infringment. Doing that means making clear guidelines for what's OK and what's not and worrying about the impression it might make if someone used a song that some people might find slightly objectionable with Disney clips, and everything else that comes with looking the other way. There's also the issue of music copyrights, which can be a biggerissue since some fan music videos use the entire song as opposed to the small clips they use for the video portion. Would it be hypocritcal for Disney to smile and nod when fans made videos using songs owned by other companies, but call for videos that use their own msuic to be pulled? I think anime companies tend to be more lenient on the fan videos because they are often much smaller and likely staffed by fans themselves. So they have the time and inclination to look and understand what's a tribute and what's theft. The bigger companies just don't have an interest in getting that involved.

As for whether Disney would sell "Gargoyles", I'm reminded of one of the multipart "DuckTales" episodes, where Scrooge unknwingly acquires a golden goose statue that can transform anything into gold. You know, something someone mentioned a while back came to mind when I thought about all this youtube discussion.

I asked something along the lines of "Would Disney ever sell Gargoyles and if so how much do you think they want for it?". My rational was that, since Disney *clearly* doesn't care about Gargoyles as a property, they probably wouldn't mind getting rid of it for the right price. Someone then replied saying that they pretty much definitely wouldn't sell, even for a very high price. Apparently, the reason they won't sell properties like Gargoyles is because they don't want someone to later make Gargoyles a more "adult" property...because that would reflect badly on Disney, its original owners.

Now, let's apply this same logic to youtube videos. Perhaps the youtube videos that are getting deleted are videos that Disney doesn't "approve of"...obviously nobody can necessarily make any kind of explicit adult content from Gargoyles clips and songs, but it's possible that a message might be delivered that Disney doesn't approve of. Maybe that is why the Disney watch dogs target these videos instead of videos where an episode is uploaded.

Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Antiyonder, actually, they do. The first time my video was deleted, I emailed YouTube and they told me that it was per Walt Disney Company's request that it was deleted. In other words, the production companies have watchdogs that find these videos randomly and then contact YT about it each and every time.

And yes, the anime community is much more accepting than USA companies about it. And its stupid. I could draw a picture of Mickey Mouse and sell it at a convention for $15, I would be breaking a law, but they don't go after people for it. But instead, I am BUYING DVDs and CDs, and then editing them into a video.

You have no idea how many comments/emails I would get telling me how because of the video I made, they are BUYING the DVD. And a lot of my videos also tell people to buy the DVD. To support the makers/authors/creators/etc. My Last Unicorn videos got me a personal apprieciation from Peter S. Beagle (author of Last Unicorn) and Connor Cochran (publisher for Mr. Beagle). Mr. Cochran even asked permission to use one of my videos as a trailer for the book, once he got permission from X-Ray Dog to use the music. Not sure if he ever did, but I was honored.

Siren

From what I hear, youtube staff doesn't actually view the stuff they delete. If it has a tag referencing copyrighted material, it's deletion friendly.

It's also for that reason that many videos have been deleted if flagged, because of majority of flaggers have been know to do so out of spite. And as before, yt staff doesn't really check to see if the video is a violation or not.

Antiyonder

Siren: What you said about Fanart about sums up how I felt when a wrestling music video I uploaded got deleted.

Anime companies are so much more open about this stuff, maybe it's because they know about the whole doujinshi and fansubbing side of the community. But I never once have heard of a company trying to take actions against animemusicvideo.org and I guarantee that site dwarves youtube as far as the number of fanmade music videos goes.

Rebel >> I had that thought. Because if you look at it, except for the picture of Yama that covers the picture and name of Matrix, everything else is the same: same bordering posters, same thumbtacks and staples, etc. If it isn't intended to be a pasted-on picture of Yama, then it's really a sloppy piece of art, or it's not close to being the finished piece.

I agree that it doesn't look much like Yama, but maybe it's intended to look like a sketch made without the benefit of photographs.

Thanks for your support about my banning, lol. But I knew it would come one day. Slowly YT has been chipping me away.

My official list of rule breaking:
1.) Hero: Narnia video about Peter, deleted only a few days after I joined YT. Mostly because I had Narnia footage before the DVD was released, but for whatever reason the ONLY other video I had uploaded, another Narnia video, was ignored.
2.) Smells Like (Teen) Spirit: Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, this was most interesting because they didn't delete it, they MUTED it, as in those who hold rights to the song didn't care I used the movie, but they didn't like me using the song. So I deleted the video myself.
3.) American Witch: X-Men, a video about Phoenix and Logan. Deleted because of copyright infringment, but my other two X-Men videos remained.
4.) Oz's Lament, a Buffy video, deleted because of copyrights.

And those 4 videos got my ass banned. :P I knew it was coming. Months ahead of time I made a video, using copyrighted music and video, about leaving YT and I was moving to LiveVideo. So most of my main subscribers know.

And yes, the irony is, I got deleted for having what is essentially FAN ART that I make NO profit from, but people who post entire movies, remain on YT. Hell, I watched Order of the Phoenix on YouTube!!!!
Fan made music videos are essentially fan art. Fan art that only the companies can profit from. People on Devianart, hell, even the Gathering, draw and paint copyrighted characters and SELL them, but no one touches them. I have a beautiful painting by Satana of Elisa and Goliath, Disney didn't get money from her I am sure. Fan vids are essentially fan art commercials. NBC is the ONLY production company I have seen to actually APPRECIATE it. Their site actually posts links of fan vids made about CSI and other shows.

Siren

I just had a thought in regards to the Bad Guys cover. Maybe it's *supposed* to look like that. Maybe the idea is that it's some bulletin board in a public place, and they keep putting new pictures over the old flyers. So maybe part of Yama's pic will be visible in the #3 cover.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Siren: Sorry to hear they banned you. Basicly ANYONE that uploads copyrighted material runs the risk of eventual ban even if it's stuff that isn't hurting anyone. BigDaddyD got banned recently and his videos were just compilations of cartoon intros. Yes, that's right just the intros, not anything from the actual episodes. That's basicly free advertisement right there and he's banned now.

Youtube cracks me up, because they don't care what might be considered fair use and they have to know darn well that 90% of the stuff on their site is copyright infringing and quite frankly without that stuff... NO ONE would go there.

Siren: why would they banned you???!!!! That bastard that uploaded all the gargoyle episodes is still there and they banned YOU??! WTF!!!
Demon@

*Surely* that's not the final cover...if so it's pretty sloppy. The pictures of Yama aren't nearly as good as the pictures of Matrix. I don't think it even looks that much like Yama, plus it just doesn't look as "finished" as the Matrix cover.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Good eye, Vaevictis. It looks like they took the #1 cover and pasted the Yama mugshot and a new "Bad Guys" logo on top of it. I hope this isn't the final cover.

First, YouTube banned me. So I am now on LiveVideo. All my videos will be up soon: http://www.livevideo.com/sirensgrotto

Second, I have the entire series on my hard drive. Season 1 and Part 1 of Season 2 are all from the official DVDs which I purchased. The rest of Season 2 and even some TGC episodes I downloaded from Limewire, all to make my videos. Whenever Disney does release the rest of the series to DVD, I will buy it, delete the season 2 and TGC episodes I have on my comp and rip the DVD quality ones onto it to continue video making.

Perhaps the "smell" is more subconscious. Sometimes with humans, there will be an attractive person of the opposite sex nearby you. But, for whatever reason, you're just not attracted to them. I think with gargoyles it would be the same kind of thing.

Current Mood: (>^_^)> In the process of ordering Issue #6...

I agree with the whole downloading what's not available by any other means. I do it all I time, I did it with the 2nd half of Season 2 of Gargoyles, and I did it for Xiaolin Showdown season 2-3 since it looks like we're not getting the rest of that(Been over a year since they released Season 1 and no word on a release date for the rest). I also downloaded Samurai Pizza Cats and Aladdin(TV series).

I'd never really tell people where I found them though since it had all the Gargoyles episodes available and I don't want to encourage people to download the episodes we actually have available on DVD. Honestly if anyone doesn't like the fact that I downloaded them well... too bad. I already bought 2 copies of both Season 1 and Season 2 vol 1. There is no guarantee that we will actually get the rest even if the current DVDs start selling by the millions. So I downloaded the rest, if the rest get released on DVD then I'll buy them.

Thanks everyone who offered me advice. midtowncomics.com is a little cheaper then even what the stores would sell the comics as. Do you think that effects how well the Gargoyles comic sells? Sorry I am such a newbie when it comes to comics. But actually, I just called the comic book shop I was talking about and they already have issue #6 at their store for me. I wont be able to go to that town where that comic book store is until Oct. 19, but it's worth the wait, and it's already there for me. I don't know how much midtowncomics.com shipping is for one comic, but at least I'll save on shipping. I usually don't mind buying from SLG, but they seem to take forever to get the newest Gargoyle comic on their website. I've never seen it available on their website on the release date. (Best I saw was #3, which I saw on their site on the second day) And sometimes it feels like it takes a long time to get your comic book from them, plus in my opinion, their shipping price is a little high. I think it was almost $6.00. They don't have to ship priority mail, but that is their cheapest opinion. (I mean come on, what about first class?) :p Thanks again everyone. I can't wait to get #6 next Friday... I will be sure to look at the corrected pages online as I'm reading #6. I'm glad I started browsing and commenting in the comment room. I have been looking at "Ask Greg" for many years, but rarely checked the comment room or left a comment.

DK2 >> I don't think its any problem to watch the second half of Season 2 online. That's what I had to do. We really have no choice, since Disney isn't willing to make those episodes available legally.

I only think it is wrong when people do that for the episodes that are on DVD, just because they don't want to pay for them or feel entitled to free stuff.

Or if you were breaking the law just to watch TGC, that would just be sick! :)

Vaevictis Asmadi

Never mind, I just caught it on the second reading. Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm deeply amused by this. But I usually eat shit like this up like crack-laced popcorn. Or just plain crack, since the doctor says I shouldn't eat popcorn.

I'll probably be keeping my defective copy and just buying a new one.

DK2> Gargoyles was a show that even older kids and adults could watch.

Thing is, is that Disney no longer caters to the family audience. The Disney Channel for one ditched the Vault Disney block in 2002. The networks sole focus is the preschool and tween girl audiences. During the summer, they aired their sitcoms more and restriced their cartoons to an hourslot on weekend evenings and the rest from 12:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If they want to get ratings from the tween audience, they should used an acquired network for that. Because in my opinion, a network named after the guy who started the company should be for all ages and gender.

You'd think that Raven Symone or Miley Cyrus was their mascot rather than Mickey Mouse.

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]

Sebastian> I like that idea very much. Even though Fox is unaware of her heritage, she could have some kind of "magical antibodies" that automatically slow down the effects of the Eye. Still, I think that fact that she isn't a werefox all the time is likely due to the fact that she was transformed into a creature (or a variation on a creature) that by it's nature is sometime in human form.

DK2> It sounds like Laird is goingabout it in a somewhat odd way, but I can't say I blame any comics creator for looking for an alternate distribution method. People have been saying for years that the current periodical forma of comics isn't really working anymore, but nothing has really come along to take its place yet.

Personally, I have no problem with anyone watching the episodes from the second half of Season Two on YouTube or any other way (though paying some guy on eBay to send you a burned disc of the episodes is probably a bit silly). If Disney, or any other company for that matter, does not make their material available for the public to buy, I'm fine with people getting it through other means. What makes me and a lot of other people here angry is when people use YouTube to watch episodes that are available on DVD, thus getting for free what they'd otherwise have to pay for which would increase the sales of the DVD.

I think a cover gallery of some sort for the trade is a must, since the cover on this series are so very good. Other trades I've seen have included text forwards, scripts of the comic, artist's sketches of characters, layouts, pencils for covers and pages (not such a big draw here since the comic isn't inked), and alternative versions of covers and interior pages that were changed from the first attempt. I'm hoping Greg and SLG will dig up some fun stuff we haven't seen before to tempt those of us who have all the issues into picking up the trade too. (Not that I require tempting.)

Demonskrye

I'm back just to post my thoughts on the last two comics and on other stuff. I've enjoyed the last two issues. I like that we've finally got to see Greg's story for the Marvel book. The only thing I'm miffed is it wasn't a FULL issue of that story. I guess Greg W felt he probably could condense it. Using this story in flashback and tying it into the present and providing a future detail to be revealed wasn't so bad an idea. Unlike the Marvel Comics series, this comic series feels like it really ties into the show. The Marvel book tied events surrounding the first season at the time. The art for both books I think has been the better among the 4 artists who've worked on it. Paniry's art looks more cluttered now compared to the others but good on the action for #4. Charlebois was probably the most smoothest and simplest panels that are enjoyed upon view in #5. Purcell I think nails the look of the show but he had alot of strange looking proportions on the chests and stuff with the characters, the art seemed in pencils only too. Hedgecock's ok but is probably the weakest among them. But to me all of them have their own flaws with the movements or positions of the bodies at times overall. I guess thats what we'll get from SLG. They can't get the big artists and stay just with in house staff, so this'll have to do. I'm surprised with learning here that #6 has the printing flaws. Just like #4 as Greg W. said the story titles heading wasn't put on pg 1. I too thought the one page repeated and yet the dialog wasn't the same was odd. I thought some sort of magic moment or flashback occurred. I was a little confused. Have no idea if I'll be able to get the corrected comic. I remember my comic store had me swap back Transformers Movie Prequel #1 for a corrected one later. Its just we're talking SLG here and how will they go about on this? Nevertheless I'll check up on those corrected pages for sure. When is Bad Guys #1 coming out? I hope soon.
I agree with postings from others we should be greatful that we have a Gargoyles comic at all right now. Better than nothing. I buy the current Tales of the TMNT from Mirage Studios and its sales are the pits and that co-creator Peter Laird shells out his own money on the comic and of course is losing out on this. He even put the current series of the regular TMNT Vol.4 comic on a hiatus to focus his time on the TMNT cgi movie. Now thats over, Laird is bringing back the TMNT regular comic, but not to comic stores. Its either downloadable for free or at a small fee at the TMNT website, then these issues will be printed as a regular comic (or he deems limited edition printings) for $10 US off their store site. To me this is stupid. You have two titles that don't make money and take one of them off the Diamond Comics dist channel. Like I'm gonna pay $10 for a comic? He stated that he can't stand waiting for a comic to see print from when all the preproduction stuff is done. And he can't stand the 3 month advance story info to be given to Diamond for the Previews catalog. I mean talk about lazy. Yet this ain't a thing with the Tales of TMNT book (though its future is in question up to 2008). See how grateful we are for a Gargoyles comic?
I know some of you are very negative about seeing Gargoyles episodes off Youtube, but I've been doing this. Probably seen 6 episodes into the 2nd half of Gargoyles 2nd season. Still with the Avalon World Tour. I just can't wait for Disney Video any longer for the other dvd sets. For me I'm trying to catch up from the episodes I've not seen and be more on par with the going ons in the comic. Clearly Disney is more focused on their immediate property of cartoons from the early-mid 1990's than for Gargoyles. Which is a shame. Gargoyles was a show that even older kids and adults could watch. To alienate this audience in the video market is stupid. Buts its all sales and numbers with these big companies. Disney is evil at times.
Greg W mentions the Gargoyles TPB will have extras in it. What could these be? At best I think a cover gallery. Anyone else have any thoughts on this TPB book?

One might also say that Alex's conception played a part in Fox's tranformation, Greg W. did say the kid was probably conceived just prior. Of cousre one has to wonder what effect the Eye of Odin had on Alex while he was in the womb?

Time Delay with Eye of Odin:

Another possibility is that the Archmage and Goliath are fully mortal beings, while Fox is affected differently by being a child of Titania. Though I think that that would give her more control over it than them. Just another possibility.

Current Mood: (>^_^)> In the process of ordering Issue #6...

Wow, boards are dead-surprising since we just got a new comic out.
Anyway, I got #6 yesterday-despite the errors I thought it was a pretty good story. I'll post my thoughts on the issue later, probably next week when more people post.

Now I'de like to post some thoughts on Coldstone/Othello while they're still in my head...

First off, I've never been really sure how the whole three souls in coldstone work. Do Othello and Des frequently trade off command of the body while keeping Iago in check? Or is Othello more or less always in charge?

But Othello really strikes me as kind of an unsavory character. He usually ends up doing the right thing, but unlike Goliath who doesn't think twice about it, Othello needs to be coaxed and nagged by others to see the light.

********SPOILERS FOR #6 BELOW******************************************

Now for some reason this thought just occured to me after reading #6, even though I was already aware the travellers encountered Coldstone during the world tour. Othello knows that Angela is his rookery daugher. This makes some of his actions and thoughts in "Possession" quite deplorable. He was basically willing to sacrifice the life of a clanmate and his DAUGHTER for his own selfish wants. Obviously his mate would never go along with it and Iago gave him a reality check-but still. And does it skeeve anyone else out that he wanted to get intimate with his mate while in his daughter's body? EWW

I've always kind of felt that Othello's excuse that Iago has to be stopped was flimsy and that he used it to cover up his own shortcomings. At least with Iago, you know where you stand-but with Othello, you don't what road he will take. This is proven once again by his actions in #6. I'm sure he could have found a much less violent way to get the travellers to leave him alone than to dangle Elisa by the neck (which is painful, I"m sure), then make an extremely violent threat to her and then electrocute all four into unconsciousness. Just inexcusable really. He could have still pretended to be Iago and subdue Elisa without nearly choking her, at any rate. And his reason for doing this is so they would stop nagging him to come with?! It's not like they can force him! I can't help but think that there's a deeper, psychological reason for why he did that...to teach them a lesson? Maybe being so interconnected to Iago is making him become more like him. A lot of self hatred there too. Maybe he feels that while in coldstone's body, he is free of blame for his violent actions because Iago *Could* take over at any time and the consequences would be worse-so it's okay for Othello to demonstrate those violent tendencies to prove a point. It's a lame excuse and I think deep down he knows this-and he hates himself for it.

Okay, now I"m just blabbing, so I'll stop ;). And even though my opinion of Othello himself has plummeted--his character just got a lot more interesting.
Any thoughts?

Eye of Odin Time Discrepencies> Another possibility is that it's because Fox was transformed into a werefox, meaning she transforms from human form to fox form. A person who is bitten by a werewolf is technically always a "werewolf", even when they aren't transformed. So the transformation may have been immediate, but the effects weren't actually visible except at certain times when Fox tranformed. (I don't think there's enough time between her transformations for the trigger to be the traditional full moon, so perhaps it's something else?)

Greg responds...
Proximity to Odin?

-----------------------------------------------------------

I tend to think that the fact that both Goliath and the Archmage KNEW what the Eye of Odin was and accepted it's powers caused them to be immediatly transformed, while Fox's ignorance of the Eye's true nature caused her to only be transformed days later, and even then only at night, or so it seems.

I've been avoiding the comment room for the past of couple days, because I didn't want to accidentally read spoilers for comic #6. (Thank you everyone for warning with spoiler labels) The closet comic book store near me is about 20 miles away... Even they don't carry SLG comics. But I called them about 10 days ago asking if they could order #6 for me. They said they would call me when it came in. They haven't called me yet, and I'm not really sure why. It could just be because they haven't got it yet (which I think they would though, I mean how much time in advance do they need to order a comic to get it there on the release date?) or it could just be because the comic book store owner didn't even ask me my phone number. =/ (But I was thinking maybe it's because he was able to know my phone number by checking what number I called from when I ordered the comic.) Could it be possible the errors in the comic book might be a reason they haven't gotten the comic yet? (But I don't know if they received it yet, I'm going to call the comic book store in the next couple days about it. This is the first time I have ever ordered the Gargoyles comic from a comic book shop. Before, I used to live in San Jose, CA, and there was tons of comic book shops, and it was easy for me to find Gargoyles. And also, there's where SLG is, so that was great. Now that I moved to Southern Oregon, I ordered directly from SLG online to get issues… Now I tried ordering issue 6 through the closet comic book store. Although… Now that there is so many errors in issue 6, and Greg said there is going to be a reprint, I'm wondering if I should just wait to buy the reprint issue. Although I'm worried it's going to take a VERY long time to get the reprint… In your opinions, how long do you think it will take before the reprint is released? This is a little disappointing.. Just having to wait longer to get issue 6... Although I suppose I could get it now with the errors and just exchange it for the reprint when it comes out. I don't know…

Left my comment. Overall a good day for animated comics. While I know the comic based off Justice League Unlimited isn't really popular around here, I do recommend fans of the show to check out #37 and the recent 38. Both are written by Matt Wayne. Both tying into episodes he wrote such as "Flash And Substance" and Alive". On that note, Jason Hall's story in #33 is one of the best issues as well, even continued a plot element featuring Morgan La Fey and Mordred.

My current thoughts about #6 is that I want to wait until the corrected reprint is available before I order it from SLG. I cannot afford two copies of the issue, and I do want the correct version.
I'm not sure how to learn when the reprint is availible, when to order, or which printing I'm ordering off of the SLG website. Obviously I'll have to wait several weeks. Well, in an effort to change the subject to something more appropriate given the comic that just came out, I wanted to ask everyone about Shambahla.

Now, obviously there are plenty of things to update in the GargWiki, and my question about Shambahla is this: In the comic that is the spelling used, but I've found multiple spellings of it in my searches online to learn more about it. The Wikipedia article is under Shambhala, and I've also seen Shamballa and others. I'm guessing that we should use the spelling used in the series, but I just wanted to make sure that wasn't a typo cuz I'm having trouble finding Shambahla with that spelling among online sources.

Matt > It's okay. Don't worry about it.

I tend to prefer it if they age at the normal rate, rather than twice as fast. But then again, I usually tend to like things better when they're convenient like that. For example, I'd rather Coldstone and Coldfire somehow be given new bodies (perhaps with making clones of already existing gargoyles). Keep in mind that I'm not trying to bring this issue up for discussion, I'm just giving you an idea of the extent to which I prefer "convenience" in fiction. Boring as they are, I do enjoy happy endings.

But I guess I have a soft spot for trainwrecks too. It probably depends on my mood.

Matt > Here you go. http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=6482

A kid says something about Greg saying that they age faster, and then Greg says he never said that, and that the pendant compensates.

This one is from 2001, while the other is from 2000, so I think that means that the pendant compensates and they age at the normal rate. I could be wrong though.

Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

OK, sorry for the double post. I had saved the responses and the answer that the pendants compensate, seems to be more recent.

2. Human rate. There's a cost.>>

Matt > I read a question in Ask Greg a while back where he denies that the pendant wearers age at double the normal rate, saying that the magic of the pendant compensates. You can read it if you do a search for "pendant" in Ask Greg. However, when I scrolled down towards the bottom, I noticed that in another question he says the opposite, and that they age at the human rate.

However, the question in which he says the pendant compensates came about a year after the other one, and so since he gave that answer later I'm assuming that's what he's going to go with. Can't be sure though.

Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Rebel> I believe you've gotten that wrong. Greg has said that the price of wearing the pendents is that you don't turn to stone and therefore you age at twice the rate of a normal gargoyle. Of course, for most of their young life the pendent wearers arn't pendent-wearers yet and they may not wear the pendents for the rest of their lives (they may pass them on to younger gargoyles before they die), not to mention they probably take them off and do the stone sleep thing now and then. So, with all that, I'd say they have shortened lives and age faster but I'd wager they still can produce their three eggs each.

VA & KC: don't worry about it quite yet. chalk it up to first year growing pains. a lot of television shows (and you can debate if this analogy applies to comic books) run into problems in season one (think ST:TNG) and go on to become exceptional in every show.

so don't sweat it. not yet.

Off topic, I know, but I just thought of something.

If the four pendant-wearers of the Guatemalan clan age faster because they don't go into stone sleep, does that throw off their breeding cycles, or do they only get one (perhaps two) opportunities to breed before they die?

"We're not the last. We're not alone." - Hudson

Rebel, it's not a matter of "caring" it's matter that Gargoyles is a Disney product and they want complete control over all their products.

For example, if Gargoyles is sold and the new rights owner starts publishing graphic content (violence, porn, whatever) then Disney gets associated with the product (even though they no longer own it) and they don't want that.

This is the same reason why Disney lobbies congress every time Copyright/Public Domain law says Mickey Mouse is about to enter public domain. They don't want that. Check out copyright law history. Every time Mickey is about to go into public domain a law is passed to increase the length of time it takes before copyrighted material becomes public domain.

Gorebash - [gorebash at s8 dot org]

Ok, well then I don't get it. If they "care" so much about this property, then why don't they approve issues faster? Please note that I am not blaming Greg or the SLG staff here. Also, if Gargoyles is so important to them, then why don't they put more effort into it all around? A while back, Battle Beast pointed out that given the right amount of effort, Gargoyles *could* be a cash cow, but Disney just sits on their ass.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]

Rebel: they'd never sell. seriously. maybe if you brought a check for, say, 500 million, then Disney might flinch, but they're unlikely to sell.

Now, about issue #6. It's worth pointing out I believe this story (or the basis for it) was the script Greg wrote for the Marvel book before Marvel killed the series.

** SPOILERS ** BELOW **

Thailog in a toga?! Daddy Anton's penchant for the (over)dramatic shines through quite brightly. I love it.

Shari is feeding Thailog grapes? What?! And then his outburst at the end as if moving to attack her. She outranks him among Illuminati, I would think he'd be forced to show her a bit more (read: at least some) respect.

Speaking of Shari, she may have gone just a bit overboard with the eyeshadow. Assuming it's eyeshadow and not black eyes.

I like the revised Angela costume. Who doesn't like a bare midriff?!

I thought the art was pretty good, too. Purcell, I thought, got the style down very well. The pencil texture I'm not sure about. It adds texture to what are usually flat colors. I don't think that makes it bad, just different and might take some getting use to.

And... man... as if the clan didn't have enough on their plate already with the Quarrymen and Illuminati and the public all after them; now they've got Xanatos working with Coldsteel?!

Shambahla? Nice tease.

Hey, out of curiosity, how much do you guys think it would it cost to "buy" Gargoyles from Disney? Reckon they'd even sell it? They definitely don't seem to care much about it, but they might refuse to sell it out of spite. Does Disney *ever* sell things like this?

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582 at hotmail dot com]
Thirty-Six. Nine.

I would rather be frustrated by SLG's publishing issues than not have any book at all.

SLG isn't Marvel. They're a (purposely, I think) small publishing company. Now they're producing more titles than, I think, they ever intended. Remember, the original Disney/SLG deal didn't even include Gargoyles. And now they're taking on Bad Guys too! There have been growing pains. I'm sure there will be more. They're not just sitting around, though, we already have signs of action being taken to help handle the situation. They've brought in Karine to handle an issue of Gargoyles proper to help them catch up and now they've brought her on full-time to do Bad Guys. Before Bad Guys, as far as I'm aware of, books were illustrated by in-house artists ONLY. These are signs of CHANGE within SLG to address the problems they're having. They need to do more, sure, but that'll come in time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

And I've yet to even cover the whole Disney approval process which is also something new for SLG. As far as I'm aware all previous SLG titles (prior to the Disney books) were owned by the people writing and/or drawing them. There was no approval process needed. With Gargoyles (and the others) they've now got an extra step they're not use to (but learning fast).

I'm not saying you don't have the right to be pissed. Go ahead, be pissed. I'm just saying try to put everything into perspective.

And nobody should (and I feel nobody has so far) lay any blame at all on Greg. These errors in printing and delays in release are all issues at the publisher, SLG.

We're all frustrated and probably getting a little testy.

So shut down your computer and go calm down for a bit. Yeah, Patrick. It's all a ploy to get you to buy more books. Because what the hell do I care if there's product out there with my name on it that's slipshod as long as overall sales go up? Why would that bother me? Not like I give a damn about this property.

Wow, I'm surprised that SLG is going to spend the money on reprinting the issue! I appreciate their effort to rectify the situation, but if they put the correct amount of effort into the comic in the first place during production, then they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. I'm done complaining and I really appreciate Greg's apology even though it wasn't his fault.

Hmm, with SLG's track record, I wonder what's going to come first -- Bad Buys #1, corrected version of Gargoyles #6, Gargoyles Volume 1 trade paperback, or Christmas!

Issue #6 Errors> For anyone who doesm't read comics on a regular basis, this sort of thing isn't totally unheard of. Normally it's smaller stuff, like a word balloon pointing at the wrong character or a minor coloring goof. But I've seen weird priting mistakes in published comics (and trades) before, even from Marvel and DC. It's not that Slave Labor hates the fans or isn't making "Gargoyles" a priority or whatever. The people who gave the book the go-ahead to print probably just didn't realize that there was anything wrong. (Weirdly enough, at a glance, all of the panels on the incorrectly reprinted page work reasonably well with the dialogue except for the last one.) I'm glad to hear that Greg is going to take n the job personally as we can be sure he knows what the book should look like and will note details like the Scarab logo goof (which even a fairly thorough proofreader likely wouldn't catch). It's unfprtunate that this stuff happened at that so many errors ended up in one issue. Expressing frustration is fine, but I'd suggest that anyone who contacts SLG be as polite and friendly about is as possible. Looking at it now, I can see how the error may have happened and not been caught in time, so there's no sene in calling for anyone's head on a platter.

Issue #6 ending with SPOILERS> I just realized that at this point, the comic has kind of left new readers who may not have seen the show to fend for themselves. The World Tour gets some brief exmplanation, which is reasonable as a fuller one would require even more of an already rushed issue. But I wonder if the quickie explanations of Coldstone and the Avalon clan are sufficient for new readers. And the ending? While we're all saying "Oh cool! Xanatos just called in ColdSteel!", new readers are likely thinking "Hey, look at that robot gargoyle thing. Wonder what that's all about." And at leas with everything else, you have the excuse that curious readers can buy the DVD and learn the deal with the World Tour and Avalon and Coldstone. ColdSteel? Unfortunately, not so much.

Incidently, does anyone recall when this story is supposed to take place in terms of the World Tour lineup?

I don't think it's too surprising that many Gargoyles fans would think that Xanatos had "gone good" at the end of the second season. One customarily defines the villain or antagonist as someone who goes after the hero or protagonist and tries to get rid of him. So, once Xanatos stopped hunting the gargoyles, and even offered them their old home back in the castle, it would have been easy for viewers to jump to the conclusion that he'd reformed.

But the gargoyles weren't Xanatos's main target. His goal was to increase his wealth and power, and to become immortal. His pursuit of the gargoyles wasn't an end, but a means to achieving those ends. Just because he's stopped trying to capture the clan doesn't mean that he's abandoned those larger goals.

* SPOILER FOR #6 *

Xanatos's team-up with Coldsteel is interesting, since it suggests that the big struggle in #7-#9 may not be as complicated as the official tagline for #8 suggests. As I recall, it listed as the contenders over what is presumably the Stone of Destiny to be Xanatos, the gargoyles, Thailog, Coldsteel, Macbeth, Merlin, and Cuchulain. I've mentioned earlier my suspicions that Merlin and Cuchulain will be appearing in flashbacks set during their original careers, rather than in the present. And the tagline for #7 suggests that the gargoyles and Macbeths might be allies in the struggle. Now it appears that Coldsteel will be participating in the big conflict in Xanatos's service, rather than on his own.

I wouldn't be surprised, incidentally, if Coldsteel tried some treachery on Xanatos - but I'm equally certain that Xanatos will have prepared for that, and probably had a couple of features installed in that robotic body of his that Iago doesn't know about yet, which Xanatos can activate in case Coldsteel *does* turn on him.

Current Mood: (>*0*)> OMG... Issue #6 is out...and it has errors?!?!?

<SIGH>

Okay. I'm embarrassed. As many of you already know, there are a number of production errors in issue #6. I have already received what I believe is a heartfelt apology from SLG, and I'm personally passing this apology on to you fans... and adding one of my own.

Here, as far as I can tell, is the rundown of the errors in Gargoyles #6:

PAGE ONE. The logo and title ("Gargoyles Clan-Building Chapter Six: Reunion") have once again been left off the book.

PAGE TWELVE. Although the correct lettering overlay was used, the art is incorrect -- and is in fact a reprint of page 16.

PAGE TWENTY-THREE. An uncorrected version of the page with the wrong "SCARAB" logo was used.

BACK COVER. The add for the trade paperback leaves Nir Paniry's name off, which is frankly inexcusable. Also Stephanie is still listed as doing tones on Bad Guys, but Karine did her own tones.

ETCHED IN STONE. In addition, the blurb for issue #7 lists Dustin Evans as that upcoming issue's colorist, but the colors for #7 are now being done by Robby Bevard. Dustin was colorist at the time I wrote that Etched in Stone, but since then the situation has changed. So that's not really an error... just consider this an update.

Guys, believe me, I am well aware how unprofessional all this makes us look. I recognize that the fans are NOT expected to have unlimited patience with all our screw-ups -- be they production errors or late deliveries. I've been told that SLG is going to reprint the issue and that exchanges will be possible. In the meantime, I'm looking for a way to post the correct pages (which exist, I swear) somewhere practical on the internet so you guys can at least see what you've missed. And of course, everything WILL be correct in the Trade Paperback (though that's hardly the inducement to buy that I was looking for).

All I can say is that we will try to do better. Truly. I know that must sound hollow, but I'll now be looking over galleys personally. Honestly, if ALL the mistakes on the book were mine, I'd feel a LOT better. And as always, I'm ready to take full responsibility for any creative stuff you don't like. That is on me.

Finally, for the record, Angela's costume on the cover is NOT an error but a creative choice made by Greg Guler (i.e. the man who designed BOTH versions of her costume). He was aware that the "scene" he was depicting was from a flashback but made the creative decision to go with the new costume on the cover. Note that covers are not canon. Covers are the FINAL ADVERTISEMENT/INDUCEMENT to get people to buy the book. Greg felt that the new costume would make for a better inducement. We discussed it, and I agreed.

Again, I'm so sorry about all this.

Battle Beast - [wlukinuk at telus dot net]
That is all I will say.

Okay, I've read #6 and found it to be... somewhat lackluster. Not terrible, but not up to par. Like many of the World Tour episodes at first viewing, it doesn't have the interconnectedness that I love. However as I re-read it, I am finding more and more to like.

****SPOILERS****
The reference to Shambahla is intriguing. At first I thought that it was the next stop on the World Tour. However, on my third reading I realized that it's still the same stop. The travelers were knocked out by Coldstone and awoke on the lake in Shambahla. There was no one conscious to say the spell, so they have not gone anywhere.

It's possible that they awoke, said the spell, and returned to Avalon. But why would Avalon send them to Tibet only to meet Coldstone and get knocked out? I think what we've seen is only seen the beginning of the Tibet adventure. (And I wonder if Shambahla is located anywhere near Xanadu.)

I'm not questioning Xanatos motives because only he knows his own agenda, but remember he's on assignment for The Illuminati, and ColdSteel must play a part in it. And if I had to guess, it may have something to do with the slab of stone in question in Chapter 7.

Question(s): Will they reprint #6 with the correct page? Why wasn't the title "Reunion" in the comic somewhere like the other titles, (save for the one where it wasn't there but was supposed to because of an SLG mistake)?

Greg > That's true about Xanatos. I honestly never disliked TGC as much as most people did, so I guess for me sometimes the regular series and TGC kinda blend together...not so much in terms of actual plot points but in my impressions of characters. By the end of season 2, Xanatos hadn't really been all that "good" for long...only 8 episodes or so. I just hope this Iago thing doesn't mean he's going to turn on the Gargoyles. I doubt he would as he surely still feels some loyalty to them for saving his son.

***SPOILERS****

Now that I've gotten a chance to re-read the issue, here are my thoughts. Production error aside, I think the art is decent. Purcell did a pretty good job, but I might have liked it more if it were inked (I've got nothing against non-inked art, but if done well), it would have looked cleaner. The pencils aren't really helped by the colors for what I've just mentioned. Pacing and panels were a little off in places, that didn't help things, but I got a clearer flow of things the second time through.

Story felt a little rushed due to space. And, this was a story told by Shari, so a little suspension helps. I found the demand from Thailog for a story, and her feeding him grapes, rather funny because she outranks him. I think she's just mollifying him for now. :p I am glad that Angela recognizes the differences about parental concerns, but still barrels ahead with her guess about Gabriel's relationship to Coldstone. And his follow-up comment, quoting the biological but still saying son. I kind of wonder how much Desdemona overheard and if some of that pause was her taking it in as well. I'm like many here and curious about the revelation at the end. What could Xanatos have to do with Coldsteel, and will the later cooperate?

You can't go back when you never left. Xanatos never became a good guy. Greg's been saying for years that he's still a ruthless, amoral schemer. He's just no longer antagonistic towards Goliath's clan. But he's still very much one of the series antagonists.

TGC got Xanatos wrong. TGS got Xanatos wrong, and most fanfic gets him wrong. Just my opinion :)

Just got #6 and, personally, alot of mixed feelings here.

**Spoilers**

To start off the art rubbed me the wrong way in quite a few parts. Though this may be just because I wasn't that big a fan of Gordon Purcell to begin with. Here I think the main problem was that he just couldn't draw Angela very well. There's several parts where she just looks rather poorly done. Also, filing under the art problems was that flub with the page being used twice just with different dialogue. Just hope that's fixed for the TP.

Moving into the story itself. I was pleased. Though I still don't care for Thailog, I did like the little bit between Shari and him. She's a character I could get to like, especially how she's both humble toward Thailog yet toying with him at the same time. It's interesting.

It was amusing to see them end up in the laundry pot like that. My first thought when they started to mention the heat was a very confused 'volcano?' though the pot certainly made more sense. Though it does make me wonder if they took the same way out. *ponders*

I enjoyed the monks though I do wish more was done with them. I understand having to fit the story into a certain amount of pages though after the past few issues stretching out the story this one felt rushed. Ahem...
The Yeti, heh. That was great. Master Dawa was the fantastic and I like how he already knew Coldstone. If his wit hadn't already made him cool then that certainly helped.

As for Coldstone himself well, there's only one thing I'm not quite getting here. If he's separated from Iago/Coldsteel, doesn't that mean he has no fear of being taken over again? Or do I need to go back an rewatch the episodes with them? Eh?

So in all it's not the best but it's still good. It also does well to open the door to future events with the last page there. *grin* I love Xanatos best when he's being the villian he's meant to be. That's all I can think to say right now so...

**/spoilers**

Asia - [h3llskitten at hotmail dot com]

Issue #6> SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU WERE WARNED!

Let's start at the begining. Cover's nice. Still a little generic for my tastes, even though it is specific to the story. But I agree, it's good to see a cover that doesn't feature Goliath. I think topping the cover to "Bash" is gonna be tough, but still, good, striking image.

The art is generally pretty good. Purcell doesn't totally knock my socks off and he does have the occasional off looking drawing, but some of his work is quite nice and the story generally reads clearly. If anything hurts the readability of the panels, I think it's the occasionally weak coloring. Putting cool colored Goliath, Angela, and Elisa on a cool covered snow/cave background without punching up the color on the characters makes for some tough to decipher panels. In the scene where Bronx first notices that the cave is inhabited, the two panels aren't well separated, but I'm not totally sure if that's an art issue or a coloring issue. And yes (sigh), someone wasn't paying attention and put one page's artwork in two places. Usually when something like this happens in a comic, the next issue will include a corrected version of the page. I'm hoping the error gets fixed for the trade and I'm really surprised that it happened in the first place.

I enjoyed the story, but I thought it felt just a bit rushed. If we compare the first two issues of the comic and "The Journey" TV epsiode, we can figure that a half-hour timeslot show take roughly two issues to tell. So this would maybe be about a fifteen minute half-episode? Regardless, I wish we'd had a little more time to have the characters talk, let Coldstone discuss how he ended up in the Himalayas, maybe even let Desdemona get a word in edgewise. Still, an overall enjoyable story. I agree that it's neat that Angela and the trio feel that the attack on the castle gives them liberty to stop hiding. Thailog Roman emperor getup is fun; I'm guessing he's not sure yet if it's to be a permanent change of attire as it doesn't turn to stone with him. Shari's certainly proving quite interesting. Even if she is a high ranking Illuminata, that doesn't explain how she knows about the World Tour. I agree with Todd that Master Dama is a fun character, injecting a little light humor into an otherwise fairly serious story. The ending teaser is certainly food for thought. I would guess that Xanatos was either specificly instruced to call in ColdSteel or he thought ColdSteel would be useful in achieving his task.

Thirty-Six. Nine.

I haven't gotten the comic yet-hopefully will tomorrow. That sounds kind of lame that the same piece of art was mistakenly used for anohter page. Something like that should be so easy to spot.

Cool cover. Doesn't feature goliath for a change. Bronx rules. However I don't like how angela's attire has changed. During the Avalon journey, Angela wore the one piece-I'm not saying the new outfit is such a bad thing, but that it's kind of dumb because it's a flashback and she was wearing different clothes. It kind of reminds me of Greg's ramble on "shadows of the past" when the animators gave elisa a heavy coat that appeared out of nowhere. It seemed to be such a huge deal to Greg and he nixed it despite how annoyed the animators were-I"m surprised he okaye'd this strange costume change.

Rebel-I've always seen Angela's hair as being brown,not black. She and Goliath both have dark brown hair, with angela's having a bit more of a reddish hue. Sometimes their hair is painted black, but more often it's brown.

Jimmy-That is an awesome picture! Elisa and Bronx are so cute and I love the background

REBEL >> He deleted it. The best thing to do is submit each topic in its own post, but Greg generally doesn't like it when one person posts 47 questions in a row, so maybe space them out a bit.

TODD >> I found the first already-answered question of the month. And dug up the answer from the archives:

tyler writes...
how do gargoyles decide the clan leader? and y is the leaders mate usally second in command? ( by this i mean clans like avalon or ones without current leaders to chose)

Greg responds...
The bigger issue over time is age. A second should be in a position to be groomed to take over for his leader, either in case of an emergency (as when Brooklyn took over for Goliath during the World Tour) or in the case of succession, as when the older Hudson stepped down in favor of the younger Goliath.

Had things gone differently at Wyvern, eventually either Demona would have stepped down to allow a new second to be chosen from the younger generation (most likely Brooklyn) OR Goliath would have stepped aside to allow Demona to lead and chose a new younger Second (again, most likely Brooklyn).

It's largely a meritocracy otherwise. Hudson chose Goliath as his second based on a myriad of positive qualities but primarily integrity, intelligence, natural leadership abilities and a genuine ferocity in battle.

Goliath in turn selected Demona for the same qualities. *He was just mistaken about the integrity.*

As for Avalon, the situation is a bit different, as all the gargs there are of the same generation. Originally Gabriel was chosen as leader and one of his many rookery-siblings Angela was chosen as his second. When Angela left, Gabriel did select his mate as his second, at least for the time being. But you can bet Ophelia was qualified -- look how she performed even when wounded in Avalon Part Three -- or he would not have chosen her. Does nepotism play a part. Possibly. But I'd think that the qualities necessary would have to be even more obvious to avoid charges of nepotism.

In London, Una is the leader of the clan. Her second, whom we have not yet met, is of a younger generation and generally runs things at their more rural (or at least suburban) estate.

In Japan, Kai was the leader. Yama, of a younger generation, was his second. After Yama's banishment, Yama's mate Sora was probably chosen as Second (though don't hold me to that). Again Sora's chosen for her attributes and (relative) youth. Someday -- short of a catastrophe taking place -- she will lead the clan in Kai's place.

In Guatemala, Zafiro is the leader. His second is not his mate Obsidiana, but Turquesa, Jade's mate. They are all of the same generation, but they are also the only gargs alive down there at the moment. (Not counting the eggs.)

Sorry for the double post.

Todd--I am "Anonymous" who made the really long Ask Greg question with lots of different topics/questions in it. I didn't realize at the time that we weren't allowed to do that. I only read the Guidelines (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/#guidelines) here (and checked the archive) before I posted, so I didn't realize we weren't supposed to ask multiple questions about different topics in one question.

Did you approve my question/questions or should I ask them again, each with their own separate post this time?

Asatira--

No, it wasn't just you. I noticed that too, and it really jars the story up because the art doesn't fit with the dialog AT ALL.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this issue. Gordon Purcell's art kinda perplexed me for the first few pages, but once I got more into the story, I really liked it (plus the art seemed to get better further into the book). For some reason a lot of Gargoyles comic art seems to be depicting Angela with brown hair, which is odd since her hair is black (this is the colorer's fault, not Purcell's). Overall the art, including the coloring, is really nice.

Overall, my current ranking of Gargoyles comic artists is as follows:

1. Charlebois. Great detail, characters well in proportion, great style, looks really sharp. Charlebois' art looks as if it could practically be a screenshot from the show. Plus the characters really look like *themselves*. I'd love to see more of her art in Gargoyles, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with Bad Guys.

2. Panry/Purcell (tie) Panry's art is definitely darker, and very different from the cartoon show. However, while it's very different from the show, it's different in a way that is *MORE* awesome, not less awesome (ala Hedgecock). I love how the characters vastly increase in musculature and size when they are showing emotion. That's a a really nice touch. Purcell's art is great as well. The characters look like themselves, and the lines are unexpected but interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing more of their art in Gargoyles.

3. Hedgecock...sorry, but from what I've seen of this guy he's just not so great. He makes the character's heads way too big, and he doesn't even make them look like themselves. They tend to be very out of proportion and very "cartoony". Also I really don't like his "style". His art is different from the show in a way that is *less* awesome. He does do a good job of showing emotion on their faces though...which is probably the only thing that makes his art tolerable, from my point of view. I will wait until issue 7, however, until I make my finalized opinion on his art.

~~~***---POSSIBLE SPOILERS---***~~~
I am now really curious as to what is going to happen with Xanatos and Iago. I am really hoping that Xanatos doesn't go back to being a bad guy, as I like him so much more as a good guy. I can't help but wonder if Thailog's little scheme in #5 and this Iago/Xanatos thing aren't somehow related...and it seems that if Iago is around, Coldfire and Coldstone must be nearby as well...perhaps they will be joining their clan again all too soon. I truly hope Coldfire and Coldstone will be able to meet their son one day, now that Coldstone knows about him. He certainly seems interested in meeting Gabriel.
On the first page, Angela is shown only wearing one bracelet. On the next page, she's wearing a bracelet and an arm band very similar to the one Demona wears. I wonder which way it's *supposed* to be. It seems like maybe the armband thing is an attempt by Angela to emulate her mom (along with her new midriff-bearing attire).
I loved the outfit Thailog was wearing and I find it really neat that Shari was feeding him grapes while he was sitting at his "throne", yet she still had the power to manipulate him. It's interesting to note that his clothes at the end didn't turn to stone. I guess the Humility Spell (or whatever it's called) doesn't turn clothes to stone if you don't feel they're "yours"...and though we obviously wouldn't see this happening in the comic series, it's amusing to think that Shari might be around when he wakes up the following night, and he might find himself quite naked in front of his new assistant (unless he's got his loincloth on under those clothes).
Lexington doesn't get many lines in this issue, but the one line he does get makes it clear that he's still a little upset about Brentwood defecting. Which begs another question...where was Brentwood all this time?
Sorry for this disorganized ramble. There are just thoughts that occurred to me.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]
I'm a bit surprised that we've had so few comments on #6 already. Maybe in a few more hours, that'll change. (For that matter, I've just been approving questions in the "Ask Greg" queue, and none of them are reviews of #6, which also astonished me.)
* SPOILERS FOR #6 FOLLOW *
Does anybody know what building Angela and the trio are visiting at the start of the issue? Is it a real New York landmark or an invented one? I like the younger gargoyles' decision that it's time to stop hiding in the castle again (particularly Broadway's remark that "the bad guys are just gonna attack us there").
Thailog seems to have adopted the life-style of a Roman emperor (probably one of the really corrupt ones like Caligula or Nero) now. But it's amusing to see that Shari seems a match for him.
The skiff's arrival in the laundry pot reminded me of some discussions that I'd seen in the chat room about just how small a body of water had to be to allow you travel to and from Avalon. (In fact, somebody brought up in one of those discussions the possibility of Avalon sending the skiff to Brendan and Margot's hot tub - while Brendan and Margot were in it!) I liked Elisa's query about whether they should find out if Avalon would prefer them to be in Hawaii.
Master Dawa was a good new character: wise, but also gifted with an excellent verbal wit that led to two of the best lines in the issue: "As for your fellow acolytes... their souls are fortunate that their bodies are such lousy shots." and "Listen with your heart, Sangpo... if that doesn't work, I'll translate later."
I'd also noticed the unfortunate transposition of the art for the start of the fight between the travellers and Coldstone to the introduction page, while leaving the speech balloons intact. I hope that the trade paperback will fix that.
I liked the twist at the end where it turned out that Iago hadn't taken over Coldstone; Coldstone knocked out the travellers himself because he was afraid that if they took him with them, they'd be putting themselves and the rest of the clan in danger when Iago did usurp Coldstone's body again.
Nice touch, also, about Angela recognizing that Coldstone is Gabriel's biological father.
As DPH correctly points out, Shambhala is a "real" mythical place, meaning that a fresh legend has been incorporated into the Gargoyles Universe (if just for one panel).
And the last page was a definite surprise. Xanatos and Coldsteel are in cahoots? This should be interesting....
It'll happen when Disney thinks they can make enough money off it to make the effort worthwhile.
Yep. It really is that simple. So how do you convince Disney that it'll be a very profitable venture?
- Buy the comic.
- Promote the comic in a POLITE and LEGAL manner. **
- Buy the DVDs.
- Promote the DVDs in a POLITE and LEGAL manner. **
- Attend the Gathering.
- Try writing a POLITE letter (not an e-mail, and hand-written is a plus) expressing your enthusiasm for the show and wish to see (and willingness to buy) more Gargoyles-related products.
Does taking any/all of the following actions guarantee success? No, but at least you can say you tried.
I'd like to see Macbeth in 2198. How does he play into the story, if at all. And in general I'd like to see 2198. It has a certain feeling of futility to it (like humans v. cylons in Battlestar Galactica). Although it strikes me as potentially the darkest of all the spin-offs.
Gorebash - [gorebash at s8 dot org]
Mochi: Well, it's a good thing you didn't ask Greg, because there's no way he'd answer that. Pretty much all questions about the future get a "wait and see" answer- Greg's wishing he hadn't given so much away over the years, and so is reluctant to give away still more. I'm eager to see Macbeth again myself- he was always my favorite character. Greg said that the 7-9 story arc is a mind-blowing arc with a "cast of thousands," so that's probably the best bet for Mac showing up. Regardless, it's guaranteed he'll return eventually, I hope as an ally for the clan. And I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Pendragon as well.
JURGAN> Yup, it's a real book, I picked up my copy at Borders' during my lunch break. So far it's hilarious. Just by opening the cover, I am 25% more patriotic ;)
Here's a little excerpt, from page 7:
"America used to live by the motto "Father Knows Best." Now we're lucky if "Father Knows He Has Children." We've become a nation of sperm donors and baby daddies. But there's more to being a father than taking kids to Chuck E. Cheese and supplying the occasional Y-chromosome. A father has to be a provider, a teacher, a role model, but most importantly, a distant authority figure who can never be pleased. Otherwise, how will children understand the concept of God?
"Every organization needs strong leadership. At home my word is law (Literally. Since I'm one-thirteenth Chickasaw, I pulled some strings and had our family home recognized as a tribal reservation. Children who disagree with me risk being deported.) Whatever I say goes. For instance, recently my son wanted a laptop computer for his birthday. I said, "Go ask your mother." And he did. That's respect."
I'm confused about the slg blog. On the blog, it says
Gargoyles #6 will be in stores next week, and Pulse has an interview with Gargoyles creator and writer Greg Weisman. How timely! The interview is illustrated with art by Karine Charlebois and colored by Stephanie Lostimolo from Gargoyles #5, as we don't have approved artwork from Bad Guys #1 quite yet. The Gargoyles spin-off will also be illustrated by Charlebois and the first issue is rattling the bars on its cage -- we're hoping for a November release of the first issue.
But Diamond says issue #6 is coming out tomorrow. Is this a case of a typo on the slg blog?
DEMONSKRYE - Not to mention that Greg seems to like having fun with our "Ask Greg" knowledge. There's #3, for example, where it's clear to us that this is the start of the Double Date story - and then Greg proceeds to tease us by having Elisa talk to both Officer Morgan *and* Jason Canmore, leaving us no wiser as to whom she'll be going with during the Double Date itself. Or Terry Chung's cameo in #4, something that wouldn't have gotten our attention if we hadn't known about his projected role in the New Olympians spin-off.
TiniTinyTony - <According to wikipedia, zip drives were invented in late 1994.> But, we're dealing with technology much more advanced than that. Just consider the Coyote robot, v1.0. Either it had a good enough artificial intelligence to fool the Pack into thinking it was Xanatos or Xanatos was monitoring it behind the scenes. I prefer to think the former. That kind of intelligence would require a lot of computing power to keep up with human communication and respond interactively. And if you think the whole body was ued to store all the needed computing power, think again. All the computing power to run the interactive artificial intelligence fit nicely in the size of a human as illustrated in "Upgrade". Anyways, back to the 'disks', I prefer to think they had to be zip-drive capacity or better. I can name things that weren't on those disks: 1) the compounds needed to make the fuel for the jets or 2) the ratios of those compounds to make the jet fuel efficient. More than likely, the data had something to do with the flight systems.
Since Stephen Colbert was brought up, any here see any episodes of the Adult Swim cartoon Harvey Birdman Attourney At Law (Been meaning to bring up the question before)? Stephen Colbert voiced Birdman's boss Phil Ken Sebben/Falcon 7. Basically the show would have Birdman defending various Hanna Barbera characters. Some case involved for instance:
- Scooby Doo and Shaggy accused of possession of illegal substance.
- Fred Flintstone being accused of being a mob boss (Episode titles were Dabba Don or Sopranstones.)
- Secret Squirrel flashing people (He was guilty, btw).
- The Jetsons travel to the past 2004, from the future year of 2002 (Really).
- Wally Gator tried for being a redneck.
I do wonder what GregW would think of the cartoon as he mentioned having some favorite Hanna Barbera cartoons
TTT> This is going to be one of those "journey, not the destination" things. When you think about it, those of us who've read Ask Greg for years have had a lot of things spoiled for us. We know a lot of the big picture, but we keep coming back for the details. And even putting the Ask Greg revelations aside, look at "Timedancer". You pretty much know the consequences of the entire series before you get to see any of it played out. But I'm still gonna be excited to see Brooklyn's friendship with Fu-Dog begin, his rommance with Katana develop, and everything else that happens to him come to pass. Similarly, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the first meeting of Angela and Coldstone played out.
Greg: That's a real book? I thought it was just a gag. Colbert's got a great racket- he can license his name to as many different things as he wants (see: Ben and Jerry's), and no one accuses him of being a sell-out because it's all done ironically. Yet he still gets to keep the money. It's perfect.
I've always wondered about those disks, myself. I guess Xanatos had the robots mostly ready to go, but there was some key element that he couldn't figure out- for example, perhaps the jet controls were so subtle that they kept crashing, and Cyberbiotics had perfected a way to use them. Too bad they hadn't mastered steering and quick turns. "It's amazing how often that works." Still, I assume Xanatos found more uses for the technology on those disks than just making his tin cans work, or else it was hardly worth the effort.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]
Tony> Probably not. LOL Glitch in whatever amounts to proofreading for the cels?
After all, there's the mysteriously transforming gun in the Awakening series which, before a fadeout (I think at the end of an episode), is tiny, and afterward is practically a rifle. And 994 Demona's magical wrinkles in City of Stone.
Kerry (Kth) Boyd - [Kth_dragon at hotmail dot com]
Kerry (Kth) Boyd> According to wikipedia, zip drives were invented in late 1994. Did Greg W. intend for them to be zip discs? Maybe. Did he intend that the animators make the disks big as Xanatos's hand? Probably not?
I think, considering how advanced both companies were, they probably used early forms of high data storage that's more common now. So, I don't see as too much of a stretch for the three disks to have enough info to complete whatever was left for the Steel Clan.
Kris -- I checked recently, and Amazon seems to have copies of individual issues. I don't know if this is something they normally do for other comics, though, as I've only recently begun looking into buying comics. So all I know is that they do sell individual gargoyles comics (at least the issues I was searching for) but I do not know if this is something they usually do.
Anyway, what you said about buying from SLG being better for the series may well be correct. I didn't think about that. Though I suppose that it could be argued that buying from random people on Ebay will have an ultimate positive indirect impact, as those sellers might buy more copies of future issues. However, buying from SLG would would almost surely have the quickest and most obvious direct impact.
Rebel, Amazon.com (or .ca, if you're in Canada) doesn't sell loose single monthly issues, unless they've changed recently to include those. The pretty much only carry trade paperback collections/compilations of those issues (which Gargoyles will eventually get) and original graphic novels. No flimsy short comics.
But you're right, you might be able to get the comics cheaper elsewhere instead of at the comic book shop or directly from Slave Labor Graphics' online ordering. I'm all for getting a good deal most of the time, but does anyone know if it makes considerably more of an impact if you buy directly from Slave Labor (and by "impact" I mean, in a support-the-franchise sense) ? You'd think it would, since if you're buying off some random dude getting rid of his issues on eBay, SLG's not making any new money. If you're buying from a professional seller/online shop, they MIGHT give SLG some more business if they re-order. In my mind, it seems like it's best to order through SLG, or pounce on the re-orders when they're offered in the Previews catalogue.
Elsa--Some other options for places to buy the comics at this point would be on ebay or amazon, or some comics website, such as http://westfieldcomics.com/ or http://www.mycomicshop.com/home?bhcp=1. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I started buying the comics, a few had already come out, and my local comics dealer had trouble getting the first few. I ordered mine from SLG but in retrospect it might have been cheaper to buy elsewhere.
Elsa >> Welcome to Station 8!
The comic is published by Slave Labor Graphics, and the link to them is on the left menu bar if you scroll down. Issue #6 of the main series comes out this Wednesday, and The first issue of the spin-off Bad Guys will be out later October or maybe November.
I hope you don't mind me asking, since you said you just found all the episodes and watched them, if you were watching them online or did you know about the DVDs?
WooHoo!!!
Heh, great time to be shown that Justice League issue that featured a Gargoyles parody. I just finished watching the majority of the Justice League cartoon last week ("Epilogue" was an awesome way to tie everything together and I didn't think the reveal about Terry was contrived like some viewers seemed to. Just that last season to go). And now I know what Captain Atom looks like outside of his natural superhero guise.
"Give me fair greeting, and I won't attack you due to some horrible misunderstanding."
Heh.
It was very strange to see Kilowog wearing overalls.
I'll have to catch the gnomes thing later, my sister's kicking me off the computer for schoolwork.
I have often thought it'd be nice if eventually the GargWiki encompases all things Gargoyles. Toys, merchandise, books, etc. As long as it is made clear what is and what is not canon, I see no problem with adding a "Gargoyles Parodies and References" page. Adding links etc. would be great. "The Last" already brings in Gargoyles references and that links us to Team Atlantis even though the universes are seperate mostly.
I was looking at "This day in Gargoyles' Universe History" and noticed this line: Xanatos used the data on the disks to activate his Steel Clan Robots. Has anybody ever worked out exactly what was on those disks that the Steel Clan robots needed in order to be activated?
I wouldn't be against a "Parody" section on the wiki.
That was fun, if a little hokey. Which was probably Greg's intent. I love Metamorpho in the panel where Behemoth then starts talking about other gargoyle clans. Man, he rambles.
I hope I didn't cause any trouble with my suggestion.
Though if I may state my opinion, I believe a parody section for Lawn Gnomes and JLA Showcase shouldn't be problematic as they are the only two full fledged parodies.
Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo,com]
Seems to me that if non-canon stuff like Disney Adventures has a place, then this parody can too. (JMHO, though.) I mean Greg wrote it, and for all we know its a universe intersect the way "The Last" is. Don't mind including Lawn Gnomes either. Course I'm not volunteering to write them up. I mean if there were thousands of Garg-references and parodies out there, one could argue about where to draw the line, but it seems like there are just a handful, so why not be completist.
L.T. Williams
I can't believe that I didn't get the obvious Gargoyles reference when I originally saw that Lawn Gnomes skit.
"Hello Booby! This is a trap!" - Eggplant Wizard
Why not just have a "Parodies and References" page in the wiki, and just put everything that references or parodies Gargoyles on that page? Each parody doesn't have to have some huge section, maybe just a brief paragraph or few sentences, with a link so interested gargoyle fans could find it. I see nothing wrong with doing something like this.
Rebel - [rebel2004nay at yahoo dot com]
"Lawn Gnomes" was a sketch from Freakazoid! that was a Gargoyles parody, though not as blatant as the DC one.
Battle Beast> Note the keyword, "officially". That comic, fun as it is, I enjoy it very much, is not "officially" "Gargoyles".
It's a reference and a parody, but, that does not mean it gets articles written up. If "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" directly references "Star Wars", should "Buffy" have an article up on a "Star Wars" wiki?
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!!!
Greg> What do you mena "nothing to do with..."??? I read the whole thing and it's a direct reference!!! It has to have a place on the wiki. the Gargoyles are dead ringers.
It should be there... at least in my opinion, anyway.
And what's this lawn gnomes thing?
Battle Beast - [wlukinuk at telus dot net]
That is all I will say.
Wow, that parody is great. Thanks for posting it!
Antiyonder> Thanks for posting the link. I never saw that before but I read about it somewhere.
Thank you to Greg B for posting it in the first place on that live journal.
All> Now what is this lawn gnome thing you all speak of, and can someone provide a link to it so I can read/watch it?
"Keep your penis in your genus."
Since the JLA parody was written by Greg Weisman, it comes closer to being official than the Lawn Gnomes parody. But I agree that it wouldn't belong on the GargWiki site, unless it did a special page for parodies.
Understandable. At least it saves me from asking about the Lawn Gnomes.
Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo,com]
Antiyonder> No, that's not "Gargoyles". It's a nice parody, but in the end, it has officially nothing to do with "Gargoyles". If we did that, we'd have to give the Lawn Gnomes an entry too.
