Whatever happened to simplicity?

@Ozzie on Avatar/Gargs- Probably the thing I enjyo most about Avatar (besides it's consistantly beautiful animation), is the fact that it rarely simplifies issues. We've got someone who's father burned him in the face as a punishment for talking out of line, we have characters who are flat out killed as a consequence of intrigue and violence, we have characters with disabilities and characterswho are war refugees. Mostly, there's story-telling that doesn't attempt to simplify the what happens in war, and instead tries to explore issues that can't be easily solved.

Yeah, sometimes the dialogue can be a little rushed (especially in the first season, but hey), but it's fun and pretty times. I've definitely run into a few other Garg fans running around the Avatar boards and communities; great for spreading the word.

More importantly, I can't wait for everyone to get back tomorrow to share all the wonderful things that have been happening at the Gathering! I'm also hoping we'll get a few pictures this year (I would be tickled pink to see twnety people posing for a picture in thier Gargoyles t-shirts, wouldn't you?)

Ozzie-without going into alot of detail(since this is a garg chat room)
Avatar has a lot of the same elements that I liked about Gargs. Good story tellling, an on going storyline, great animation, wonderful character development(there's more to the characters than a first glance-much like Gargs), a nice blend of action, drama & humor. Some great voice acting. I admit it has it's silly moments, but if you can look past those and into the full story, Avatar is well worth watching. Best to judge a show for yourself. I honestly didn't know what to make of it the first time I watched it either, but I gave it a chance and I love it-and I'm 42(which may not be saying much, but hey-I'm a big kid) ^_~.

Wingless

What is so great about Avatar? I'm not trying to be mean I'm asking a serious question. I've heard alot people talk about how awesome it is on some forums, but then most of them aside from saying it's awesome just talk about their creepy obsession with Toph.

Spoonvonstup - *whispers* at least Nick is releasing ALL the Avatar episodes on DVD ^_~
We still got extra episodes aired in Canada ahead of Nick-and there were a couple that leaked on the net that haven't aired at all up here, so I'm unsure how it'll be hanled up here.
Yes, I know this isn't an Avatar chat room-but it still is a great show, worthy of Garg fans.

@Mochi (Avatar)> Yep, the long hiatus is finally over. The ending will finally be revealed (I mean, at least for everyone who didn't read the comic book...what? Sheesh, we think Disney is not being good to us? Just look at the scheduling/spoiler/release craziness Nick has been doing with Avatar.)
Spoonvonstup - [<-- Gargoyles Music Video Database]

Jonny Modlin is actually Maria K. Modlin (on Amazon.com). So whatever "it" is, one thing is for certain is that "it" is very confused and possibly borderline retarded. It also could be someone hired by Disney to drive us nuts.

Guys, remember, theoritically it's impossible to predict comic will come out because the approval process from Disney isn't . . done according to a time line.
All I really would prefer to know is 2 things:
1)What is the status of the license renewal for the gargoyles comic
2)Has issue #9 been sent to Disney for approval

Spectacular Spiderman on DVD! No doubt Greg is announcing this at the Gathering - but I found this at tvshowsondvd.com - a release for September 9th. On the downside, it's only 3 episodes:

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Spectacular-Spider-Man-Attack-of-Lizard/9950

For those who like Avatar: the last Airbender and don't already know, the last eps are due to air on Nick the week of July 14-19 with the last 4 eps airing on Saturday the 19th in a 2 hour block. No word on what YTV will do in Canada.

Looking forward to Gathering news (Wonders if Thom has been de-panted) ^_~)

I can't wait for Con Journals to start coming in! Let's see, right about now, the radio play for G'08 is underway.

I hope someone tapes it again this year- that was a real treat last year.

Also, I was just checking to see if the G2009 website was up on an off-chance, and guess what? It kind of is! Anyway, it's at least got an amazingly cute graphic/logo for us to enjoy while the registration page loads. Check it out!

I think the best episode is Awakening, Part 1. Of course, it has writing, animation, music and performances that rival the best of the series. But what really makes it stand out is the masterful plotting. In a mere 22 minutes, the taut story goes through many twists and turns and plays the emotions like a fiddle. I think it's the perfect example of a well-made story and pilot. If I were a writer, I could probably spell out why it's a perfectly designed story, but I just sense that it is.

My favorite episode is Future Tense, partly for the effect from the first time I watched it. Within seconds I forgot the improbable setting transformation and was completely sucked in. That made me believe everything as real when I saw it. By the Broadway death, I was already numb. When the episode ended, I felt like I was smacked with a brick. I don't know if it was catharsis or the exact opposite, but I had to sit dumbstruck for several minutes. Very little fiction gets that kind of reaction out of me and it means the creators were doing something right.

Besides the first experience watching, it's my favorite for all the usual reasons. I also have a penchant for post-apocalyptic stories. I brings out the best (or worst) of your characters and magnifies their differences, as it did in Future Tense. That's why inserting it into the canon as a standalone, faux-irrelevant story was a masterstroke.

Lumpmoose - [lumpmoose at googles dot email]

By now, the Gathering is probably in full swing (if not at this moment, with it being 9am :p ). Hope everyone is having fun.

Hmm, favorite episode and best episode... Tough because I don't always think about it. Best episode is a copout in that it's not one episode: City of Stone. I think this arc is really where the series story telling shone, and added a lot of backstory to Demona and Macbeth. It's just a strong arc. Next, would be my favorite, and right now I'm going to say The Mirror. What can I say, I'm a sucker for episodes where romantic connections get advanced. And it was a well written light-hearted funny episode. That, and seeing how the clan and Elisa looked as the other species was a plus.

Asatira

I hope luck shines upon those of you at the yearly gathering. Be well, stay well, and have fun.

Man, it's so hard to pick a favorite episode or best episode. I mean, I love basicly any episode that has Demona. But then I always like female villains. Favorite episode would probably be the one that introduced the Pack though. I thought they were an interesting bunch, at least until the whole team fell apart.

Best episode, I just can't make a decision on. They are all too well written and enjoyable to pick just one that I think is best.

Also someone one of the the chanboards said something kinda interesting the other day. I can't remember what series they were talking about but they said something along the lines of "The characters and stories are so bland. But I guess not everyone can be Greg Weisman"

Jonny Modlin> If any announcements are made, we'll be talking about it in the Comment Room and probably every other "Gargoyles" related site on the web. You won't have to ask. However, if you keep asking at every single opportunity whether there is any new information about the DVD release of Season Two, Volume 2, I could easily see people going out of there way to keep you from finding out about it. You're not helping to spread the word. You're not ferreting out any new information about a potential DVD release. You're just being annoying. Do you really think it helps the cause of getting the rest of Season Two out on DVD when you post your same old spiel and questions on every "Gargoyles" fansite - including online petitions - multiple times? I started a thread on the Amazon listing to inform people that we didn't actually know yet whether Volume 2 of Season Two would be released. You responded to my post and every single one in the thread with posts that repeated the exact same information and gave no indication that you were actually reading what anyone else wrote. In fact, I seldom get the impression from you that you are reading anything anybody else writes, even if it is directly addressed to you.

If you actually want to help to keep "Gargoyles" alive, calm down, realize that you will probably know about any potential Season Two Vol 2 DVD release as soon as anyone else does, and try actually communicating with other fans or spreading the word to people who aren't on "Gargoyles" related websites already and may not know about the DVDs and the comic. If you really just like to type the same thing over and over again, just get a blog so you can do it without being an annoyance.

We're just leaving Charleston, SC this afternoon. Since we're driving, we won't be arriving until mid-Saturday. We're missing Opening Ceremonies, which is a shame, but it's okay since we've seen it before. Yami Raven will be wearing her "Zombie Crossing" shirt and I'll be with her, so feel free to walk on up and say hello. After the con, we're going to a cheaper hotel and staying for a day of sightseeing, and leaving Wednesday morning (also, the con attendees usually go play laser tag or go to an amusement park or something after the con, and since we don't have to leave the city, we'll have time for that). Look forward to seeing you!

Well, I'm off to catch my train to Chicago. I know I'm one of the last ones to leave, but I couldn't take yesterday off work and besides, I'll still be there in plenty of time for Opening Ceremonies. Have a great weekend here, guys.

The best episode? Awakening Part 5.

On Episodes> My fraforite epsiodes are pretty much the standards as well (Awakening, The Mirror, Hunter's Moon trilogy), but I actually really enjoy High Noon. The animation is just fantastic, we get a great Coldstone story, a great Demona and Macbeth story, and a great exploration of Elisa's character. Plus, Demona's two transformation are just beautiful there.

I've also always loved Future Tense and MIA. Beautiful animation (London in particular just looks awesome, as do all of the explosions and such), and I'm always a sucker for those Phoenix Gate stories.

Spoonvonstup - [<-- Gargoyles Music Video Database]

Yes, safe travels with everyone attending the Gathering! :D

(***Tosses Party-Hats to those CR-ers who for whatever reason, aren't going to Chicago***)

My faves of Gargoyles range from most people's favorites . . . Mirror, the multi-parters, Price, etc. Character development, historical signifigance, general story-amazingness, continuity, these eps have it all.

As for TSS-M, which I know many see here, gotta love the Green Goblin eps and the Shocker ep. They've been my favorite villains so far (along with Doc Ock), and I felt the banter was just top-notch in those eps.

Phoenician

CoS - I loved it as well. However, it wouldn't be as great if we hadn't had a couple Macbeth episodes prior to it.

Any ways, has anybody noticed there's no new blogs at slg's website since it was redesigned? Not that I'm expecting much from their website.

Whatever happened to simplicity?

Some of my faves: The Mirror, Upgrade, and Future Tense. I tend to prefer episodes that feature Demona.

But I'd have to agree with BB...City of Stone is, in my opinion, probably the best episode overall.

Rebel
GOLIATH: I SHOULD SAY SOMETHING SHAKESPEAREAN NOW.

What's your favorite episode of the TV Series?

What do you think is the BEST episode? (There is a difference)

For me, my favorite episode is The Reckoning or The Price. I love how the Clan in "Price" rallies around Hudson't death, and how Hudson proove just how useful he can be.

In "The Reckoning", I just think it's neat how we see an imprisoned Demona and how the clones are made.

A close third in the tryptich "Avalon" because it blew the series wide open. All of a sudden we have Oberon's Island and the Gargoyles egss and just possibilities of too many things... way cool.

But as for best episode, I think it's gotta be the "City of Stone" four parter. I love the mix of Demona's life with the historical aspect of the series. And Macbeth's life, too.

Battle Beast - [Canada]

Todd> Well I just put the list of past Radio Plays in the Gathering of the Gargoyles article on GargWiki, so it's preserved for posterity.
Demonskrye: - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

I think the Radio Plays are my favorite parts of the Gatherings I've been to so far. I enjoyed 2006's performance in part because we had Keith and Thom and Crispin (I still laugh at his attempt to play Hudson. Arrgh!). I enjoyed '07's because we got a sneak peak of issue 5 and enjoyed taking part in the group squee. I did not know that only a few of them were related to Gargoyles, so that's something to look forward to the next time I go; it could be Gargoyles related or it could be something completely different, the anticipation will be higher.

Wow, I don't think it hit me the Gathering was this weekend until today. Have fun everyone who's going.

Asatira

Too bad that Greg didn't post that list of radio plays on an "Ask Greg" ramble as well; while its immediate purpose was to answer a question here, it's also become an invaluable piece of reference material to anybody writing a history of the Gatherings.

I remember listening to the "Hunter's Moon" radio play in 2001 - especially when Greg got to Thom Adcox (reprising his role as Lexington), and called out "And Thom Adcox as the Beaver!"

Although I never participated in the radio plays myself (reason omitted) - the general idea behind having them(at least my understanding) was to give gathering attendees a chance to experiment at voice acting. Gargoyles related or not. Who knows, maybe trying out for the play may lead to a future in doing voices - not to mention getting to share the stage with some of the real deal ^_^ (Who wouldn't want to stand beside Keith David or Thom Adcox! Radio Plays> I was unaware of how many of the scripts done have been unrelated to "Gargoyles." But I guess the "gargoyles" aspect is getting to hear voice actors from the show read in person, which I know from other cons is really something special.

I won't be at the Gathering this year. I might go someday, but travel is just not an option for us as of now. I am, however, very happy that Greg answered my question at Ask Greg before packing and departing for the con became an issue. It may not be a huge insight into Wyvern Clan culture, but it's still nice to know.

Demonskrye: - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Ah, my mistake then. *opens mouth, inserts foot* I figured it was something Gargoyles-related every year, and that Gathering attendees will have come to expect a Gargoyles play. I guess that's what I get for assuming. My apologies. If I were a consistent Gathering attendee and was aware that the play was often not Gargoyles material, I would not at all be disappointed in something not-Gargoyles-related.
Rebel
GOLIATH: I SHOULD SAY SOMETHING SHAKESPEAREAN NOW.

RADIO PLAYS...

Sometimes I just don't have anything Gargoyles for us to do. And I'm not sure if just doing old episodes is all that interesting. And the other things have been fun... at least it seemed that way to me.

Here's a history of the works of the GATHERING PLAYERS...

1998 - RAIN OF THE GHOSTS (an unproduced pilot I wrote)
1999 - THE ROSWELL CONSPIRACIES (a rejected pilot I wrote)
2000 - ROUGHNECKS: THE STARSHIP TROOPERS CHRONICLES (the last arc of the series, which I story edited, half of which was unproduced. Written by me, Jon Weisman Lydia Marano, Cary Bates and Michael Reaves.)
2001 - GARGOYLES: "Hunter's Moon, Part Three" (Note: this was the first time that we actually did something gargoyles related for the radio play. This included scenes that were cut for time from the original. Written by Michael Reaves.)
2002 - TEAM ATLANTIS: "The Last" (Unproduced episode featuring Demona and Fiona Canmore, written by me)
2003 - GARGOYLES: "The Reckoning" (Performed in honor of Gary Sperling, who co-wrote the script with Lydia.)
2004 - GARGOYLES: "The Journey" (my uncut version of the script)
2005 - DOC SHAKESPEARE (An unproduced pilot written by myself and Sam Bernstein)
2006 - GARGOYLES: "The Mirror" (written by Lydia Marano and Brynne Chandler Reaves)
2007 - GARGOYLES: "Clan Building, Chapters III, IV & V: Invitation Only, Masque & Bash" - (from the comic, premeiring chapter V before it was published. Written by me...)
2008 - Geez, I should probably figure this out soon...

Anyway, you can see that traditionally, we've only done something gargish about half the time. For me it's fun to get to see my unproduced work performed, and it does give the fans a little insight into the biz. In any case, I've never heard any complaints from the folks who attended.

Greg Weisman
OFF TO CHICAGO... ON A WING AND A PRAYER...

rebel: it's not always something Gargoyles. Once (think in the last LA con) they did the pilot for something new Greg Weisman was working on (Dr.Shakespeare?-something like that).

But with the comic, I would imagine he would do something Garg related now that he has new material to share.

I'm betting the radio play will be a story from Gargoyles, not SSM. If I were attending the Gathering and the radio play turned out to be an SSM story and not a Gargoyles story, I'd be a little peeved. After all, it's "Gathering of the Gargoyles", not "Gathering of all the people who are fans of all of Greg Weisman's projects"...right? I've never attended so I don't know if my viewpoint is acceptable or not. I am a fan of SSM, but it shouldn't automatically be assumed that everyone who likes Gargoyles is also a fan and an avid watcher of SSM.

Todd: I always thought Midsummer's Day was halfway through the summer. Damn, Nature is sadistic AND deceptive. ( ;

On a serious note now, I'm going off radar for a bit. Catching a flight out from Richmond International today, spending the night with my aunt and uncle in De Kalb, and from there going to Evanston on Thursday. Look forward to seeing some of you.

Hi Volpe de Fuego, good to see you here :D

I hope everyone has a good time at the Gathering! I'm insanely jealous ;P. I look forward to the reports

Hi everyone :D Wow, this is my first time posting here ^^; Nice to meet everyone! I'm so excited about the Gathering, a lot of firsts for me. First time being in that part of the country, very first convention and very first Gathering XD I'm so thrilled! Anywho, in response to Wingless, I'd be stoked if the Radio Play was based off of "Timedancer" XD In response to Chip/DragonHunter723, I'll be wearing my Gargoyles Hottopic t-shirt. Can't wait to meet everyone! Let's all have a blast, ok? I wish happy trails and a safe, smooth trip to everyone going ^_^

That is all I will say.

Wingless - I'm not interested in predictions, just news, mainly about one thing. The status of the license agreement that slg has with Disney to produce gargoyles comics. Anything beyond that is pure bonus to me.

I'm leaving soon to catch my flight to Chicago, so hope to see most of you there. I'll be wearing my Hot Topic Gargoyle shirt.

Wingless - JUST issue 9 for the Radio Play would make it really really short. :)

Matt and Chip - First day of the convention most people will be wearing their brand new convention Gargoyles t-shirts. :)

What's missing, Wingless? Whatever it is, I hadn't noticed it yet (and still haven't).

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Oh, on another note-has anyone noticed something missing from the comment room this week?
Wingless

Gathering predictions (since I'm not gonna be there, I can do that :-)*

There will be artwork from upcoming comics there. Possibly the radio play will be the script to Gargoyles #9 (if not, maybe a Spectactular Spiderman ep).

Anyone else have predictions?

Wingless

Thanks, Asatira.

Incidentally, since today's Midsummer's Day, I decided to watch my DVD of "The Mirror" again - and enjoyed it again.

@Meg> That's definitely what I was not trying to go for. :-p I'll keep working on it.

Todd> Congrats on the overview assignment! That's great.
Asatira

Spoon>I really like the idea of commenting on YT videos, and mad props to you for doing it, but I wonder if you could make the comment a little less...adlike, almost? It almost sounds as though SLG was sending people to comment on YT videos, heh. A comment that's more like "darn, I loved this show when it was on TV, you should check out the new comics!" sounds a little more fannish and would draw me, at least, in a little more.
Meg

Holy crap, it's afternoon already.

3 days left until The Twelfth Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles in Chicago, Illinois!

Demonskrye> "The one problem I have with that theory is the Goblin would have to have known somehow that Spidey would later be around to see Norman walking without a limp."

But Gobby did know that Spidey was on to him: "I know your Norman Osborn!". So it's natural for the Goblin to suspect that Sdidey will be coming for Norm sooner or later.

Algernon
"You see, I was once a bad-ass vampire, but love and a pesky curse defanged me. Now I'm just a big, fluffy puppy with bad teeth." -Spike unwittingly foretells his own future.

Sorry for the double post, but....

Todd> I doubt Greg would be puzzled. He's read the original comics and he knows that Norman was the original Goblin there. I think Greg is more frustrated with people thinking he's going to reveal upcoming plots for the show on "Ask Greg." There are enough hints that Norman could still be the Goblin that I think Greg wants to keep us wondering at the least. And I imagine that if he had intended the story to be that Harry was the Goblin and that's the end of it, I think he would have said that in an answer by now.

Demonskrye: - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

dph> The one problem I have with that theory is the Goblin would have to have known somehow that Spidey would later be around to see Norman walking without a limp. Either than or he's been limping away every single fight with Spidey and Peter just happened to notice this time, which seems both too much of a coincidence and silly.
Demonskrye: - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Does anybody besides me suspect, from Greg's answers at "Ask Greg", that he really did intend for Harry to be the Green Goblin, and is feeling puzzled that so many of us are convinced that Norman framed his son?

What would David Xanatos do? Well, he wouldn't sit at his computer bitching and moaning, that's for sure.

I had to reboot my pc and that fixed my youtube problems. I rewatched "The Uncertainty Principle" and a thought occurred to me: what if the Goblin faked the limp to throw Spider-man off.

I don't know if I should be mentioning this or not, but:

During the weekend, I was approached by a man named Michael Torregrossa, who's working on a book of essays entitled "Getting Medieval on Television: Televisual Representations of Medieval Themes from Roar to the Tudors". He asked me if I'd be willing to submit an overview on "Gargoyles" to it, and after thinking it over, I told him that I would. (I came to his attention because I mentioned "Gargoyles" a couple of time on an Arthurian mailing list that I used to be on, which he's still on.)

I won't say anything more on this for now, but I thought that you might like to know about it - and I've already started working on the shape and structure of my overview.

Is anybody else having trouble with youtube today?
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

@something from last week> "What good is it if I view all of these (Gargoyles videos on YouTube) but don't make a comment on every single one of them, reminding people about the DVD's and the comics? What good is it if I forget to put these reminders in the descriptions of all of my *own* GMV's? I've got 10 days until I go to MN for an intensive internship; I plan on devoting a little bit of everyday to working through every Gargoyles YT video I can find and commenting (so don't be surprised if you hear from me in a few days)."

So, I've started posting comments on YouTube videos letting people know about the comics and DVDs. Turns out YouTube has a comment limit; no more than so-many comments or so-many characters per such and such amount of time. Who knew? It looks like this'll take a lot longer than I thought it would. Oh well!

Here's generally what I've been saying (tweaked depending on the particular content or language of the video- this one was in response to a clip of Awakening I):

"What a great show! While you might find episodes on YT, the quality will always be worse than the two Gargoyles DVD's now for sale.
Even better, the show's not over! Gargoyles is continuing in comic form; you won't find them online! If you loved the show when you were a kid, you'll be sure to love the new comic series by Greg Weisman, published by SLG (Slave Labor Graphics)."

Let me know if anything in this approach sounds too..I don't know..unhelpful. You're feedback will help me respond to these videos in the most effective way possible (for the poster and the other commenters). If you feel like joining me in this endeavor, awesome! I check videos to make sure I'm not repeating anyone, so just one or two comments a day from another fan will cut down on my project immensely.

That is a shame about George Carlin. A truly brilliant comedic mind has left us.

Yikes! George Carlin:-( My earliest corruption was listening to him with with my brothers & sisters. Sitting around a portable record player with them at the age of 7 listening to his "Class Clown" album and the "7 words you can't say on Television" - amazingly most of which you CAN say these days. Then having the even stranger experience of seeing him as the replacement for Ringo Starr as Mr. Conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine. He'll be missed for sure - leaving alll his "Stuff" behind.
Wingless

Anyone see the new revamped SLG website? I can't seem to find the upcoming release page that they never updated. Maybe they just got rid of it. If anyone stumbles upon it, and it appears updated, please share the link. :D Thanks.

George Carlin will be missed. :(

I think one thing we can all do to help remember him is to NOT blindly forward the e-mails full of inane drivel with his name signed to it, even though he never wrote it. George Carlin did not write anything titled "Hurricane Rules" or "I Am a Bad American" or 99% of the other stuff that floats around the internet with his name attached. So if you get an e-mail this week containing something that claims to be George Carlin material, please visit one of the following web sites to validate it before passing it on:

Thanks a lot, Greg! You've ruined my night! I loved Carlin... did you see his "hippy dippy" weatherman on Carson? Hilarious! I actually got to see him live in 1999... I was young, but I loved his routine.

I will always remember him from Kevin Smith "Dogma".
